We spoke to four teachers who joined the school recently about the differences they have seen since exchanging a career in the state system for their new lives at Coopersale Hall. What main differences have you seen between Coopersale Hall School and the state schools that you worked previously at? “At Coopersale Hall, right from the Early Years level children are taught specialist subjects by specialist teachers. is helps their progress in Music, French, ICT and P.E.¬ We have more resources available to us here and children at all levels are supported and stretched academically, even from a young age.”- Early Years Teacher “As the school concentrates on a varied curriculum rather than training for SATS, there is less pressure for the children and pupils. We have increased staffing and resources to push the children, and we can see the benefits that this has on the pupils in not only their progress but their contentment in the classroom.”- Year 1 Teacher “I came from an urban state school that had very little space. e grounds here are extensive. e children have so much more outdoor space and the specialist rooms for subjects such as the Music/Dance Studio, Science Block, Art Room and ICT Suite are hugely beneficial for the children.”- Year 2 Teacher “Home-school relationships are outstanding here, which is so important for all children. With fewer children, more resources and more staff the school provides excellent pastoral care. As the children are prepared for senior school, rather than just to pass the SATs, their progress and well-being are always priorities.”- Year 6 Teacher How have you found teaching at Coopersale Hall in comparison to your previous teaching position(s)? “I have half the number of children in my class here as I did in my previous role so it is so much easier to provide 1 to 1 help and support. ere are more resources for the children and we can identify any pupils with speech and language difficulties or other additional needs much faster.”- Early Years Teacher “My class at Coopersale Hall is progressing so much faster than classes I’ve taught before. I think this is mainly due to being able to provide more individual attention to my pupils. We can work through topics much faster and we’re able to provide a much more varied education.” - Year 1 Teacher “With a much smaller class I know all of my children’s strengths and weaknesses and can provide more individualised learning. Also, I have my own Teaching Assistant, which I’ve never had before, so I can really extend and support the children at different levels in their learning.” - Year 2 Teacher “As I have fewer children in my class I can ensure that each child reaches their goals. ey are often split into smaller groups to help them all 8

IS DRIVING STILL FUN?... I
t used to feel so harmless… Getting into the car and driving to a client, friend, a networking event or simply to enjoy a social occasion. Slink in, turn on the music, set the Sat Nav and off you go… Well simplicity is now most sadly, a thing of the past. Have you noticed all those cameras? And we are all getting stung for what appears to be minor non-threatening offences … I have a friend who was fined for being only 6 inches inside a yellow box. Another who was fined for doing a U-turn at 2 a.m. on an empty road. Yet in juxtaposition, driving is far scarier and more hazardous; what used to be fun is at times, rather frightening. I used to be disgusted by motoring arrogance and have always blamed the advertisements encouraging bad or reckless driving. Perhaps my thoughts were on track when I recently saw that three American car companies have had their advertisements banned: Ford, Nissan and Fiat Chrysler -

WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS My own personal grief is Redbridge Lane East and its entry onto the roundabout. You need gonads the size of grapefruits to take on this road and attempt entry onto the roundabout. I’ve read the improvement plans and it appears to be nothing more than some white lines – it’s the most dangerous road I have ever encountered and regularly see incidents. ere seems to be a state of apathy that driving is no longer about getting from A to B in the safest way possible; that with every journey we risk fines for the sake of it and dangers are not necessarily addressed. Cameras are not always there to improve safety but to boost certain coffers…. Whilst on the subject of being fined for the sake of it, a lot of restaurants now require you register the car if parking in their car park. Allegedly if on private property you don’t have to pay – but I would suggest you make your own enquiries and conduct your own research and especially, take five minutes wherever you park your car to look for signs, hidden or otherwise. So is driving fun? Only if you don’t mind the expense of running a car, infinite fines for the sake of it and are happy with being watched from all angles by Big Brother… n

upported by Wanstead Business Network (WBN) where all members with either a service or product to offer, enthusiastically gave of their time and products to ensure this event would be memorable, successful and fantastic. In addition, a £500 donation was given from Chigwell Business Group (CBG) and Epping Forest Business Group (EFBG) were also involved. Wanstead Golf Club was the perfect venue for the event and they too, were very supportive, especially as WBN are based from their beautiful and highly respected club.

A TASTE OF THAILAND CULINARY TOUR DISCOvER THE SECRETS OF THAI COOKING ON THIS 10 DAY TOUR Explore bustling Bangkok, take a tutorial at Pantawan Cooking School in Chiang Mai, and head to Phuket for more practical culinary experience and a sumptuous street food tour.
DAY 01 - Arrival in Bangkok Once you arrive in Bangkok, you will be met and transferred to The Peninsula Bangkok. DAY 02 - Bangkok A whole day to explore this captivating city. Your first stop will be the Royal Grand Palace, before heading to Wat Pho to admire the famous Buddha statue. Cruise along Chao Phraya River in a long-tail boat, stopping for a photo opportunity at Wat Arun. Spend the evening wandering through the city’s Chinatown. Before you start cooking today you will visit a local market to select your ingredients and learn more about them. The chef will show you a tutorial demonstration before you try your hand at cooking for yourself. DAY 05 - Chiang Mai Enjoy an early morning visit to the market, before heading out to Wat U-Mong; a sacred site dating back to the 14th century. The next stop today is Wat Suan Dok, where the Chiang Mai royal family were buried. After a lunch of Khao Soy, a noodle soup, visit the important temples of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep and Wat Phra Singh.
DAY 06 - Chiang Mai – Phuket Fly to Phuket from Chiang Mai Airport. Upon arrival you will be transferred to SALA Phuket Resort & Spa to check-in for your five-night stay. DAY 07 - Phuket Phuket Thai Cookery School Another cooking class today, at the Phuket Thai Cookery School. Enjoy making your own lunch and relax to eat it, admiring the beautiful ocean views. he sound is conducted through the ear canal to ear drum and from ear drum to inner ear by small bones of hearing. is middle ear space can sometimes get filled with thick, sticky fluid just like glue hence the name glue ear. is fluid can dampen the sound reaching inner ear and can affect hearing. Glue ear is very common in children until the age of 2 to 5. Eighty percent of the kids would have had at least one episode of glue ear by the age of 10. Frequent cold and flu, allergies, passive smoking and some genetic conditions can contribute to your child having glue ear. It can be associated with tonsillitis and blocked nose. If you notice behaviour changes, hearing loss and speech delay, balance problem and your child
complain of ear pain it could be due to glue ear. ere is evidence to show a link between glue ear and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). You should seek medical help if you notice any of these symptoms. Good news is in most of the cases, glue ear resolves after three months of watchful waiting. In other cases, treatment options include auto inflation, grommets or hearing aid. It is also important to get schools involved in supporting children with glue ear. Changes in Family Law Joanna Toloczko is Head of Family Law at Meaby & Co Solicitors. She is a member of Resolution and the Law Society’s Family Law Panel and an Accredited Family Mediator. The advent of the government’s consultation on no fault divorce has prompted me to consider the changes I have seen during my career of over 30 years in family law. Currently, there is only one ground for divorce, the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage. In order to establish irretrievable breakdown, you must rely on one of five “bases” and, if you have not been separated for a minimum period of two years, the only bases open to you are the other party’s adultery or unreasonable behaviour. I often come across clients who have parted amicably and managed to agree on the arrangements for their children and how to divide their assets and income. They want to make the financial settlement legally binding, which can only be done by obtaining an order from the court within divorce proceedings. Then we have to draft a Divorce Petition giving details of adultery or unreasonable behaviour and this ruins the couple’s efforts to remain amicable, and can destroy the agreement in some cases. For this reason most family lawyers welcome the idea of no fault divorce. When I first started out as an articled clerk, it was not possible to divorce during the first three years of marriage - this has subsequently been reduced to just the first year. In every divorce, the court would automatically consider the arrangements for the children and the divorce could not proceed until a judge had certified that s/he was satisfied with the arrangements. Usually, a formal order was made regarding which parent was to have “custody”, “care and control” and “access”. Things changed when the Children Act 1989
came into force. Since then the court will only make an order regarding a child if it can be demonstrated that it is better for the child that an order is made. The court no longer considers the arrangements for the child/ren as part of the divorce. It was not until the House of Lords decision in the case of White - v - White in 2001 that the principle of sharing matrimonial assets equally was established. Prior to that assets would be transferred to the more financially vulnerable party (usually the wife with the children) to satisfy financial need only. It was not possible to obtain a pension sharing order, which takes funds from the pension of one party and creates a new, separate pension for the other party, until December 2000. A lot of progress has been made over the last 30 years but there are still areas of family law which are outdated and in need of reform.

Yassine’s Story Gerard’s Property Services proudly supports Teens Unite; a charity helping young people overcome the emotional, social and physical impact of a cancer diagnosis. Yassine, a young person supported by the charity has shared his story. "When I was diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, I was starting university and I had started a new job. I still remember the day the doctors said “you have to undertake chemotherapy”. It was like the world collapsed on my shoulders. e struggle was real. I was having treatment, studying and working, which drained all of my energy. I put on so much weight that I wasn’t fitting in my clothes anymore. Even my friends barely recognised me. My hair was falling out, leaving me no option but to shave it all off. e nausea was the worst; I felt sick constantly and could taste the medicines they injected me with all day long. I fell into depression. I was a body without a soul. Everything was so dark and sad. I never gave up; I knew the dark tunnel must have an exit point. For me, the light at the end of the tunnel was Teens Unite. ey brought back the life in me. I met people who felt like me, who have been in the same situation. People who I didn’t feel embarrassed around. Everyone at Teens Unite - even just with a smile have healed my wounds.”
