What to expect when returning from maternity leave Returning from maternity leave can be scary. Mothers have countless obstacles to overcome. You’re leaving your baby for the first time. You haven’t worked for months, a year or even longer. So there are lots of questions you may have. What if my childcare falls though? Will people still remember me? Can I still do my job? Will I end up on the ‘mummy track’? Should I still breastfeed? Is there somewhere to express? Should I go part time? Do I even have a job j anymore? y As a recent returner from maternity leave, and an employment lawyer, here’s my advice and a few tips.

First - check you are going back to YOUR job Your employer can’t simply give your job away because you had a baby. If you are returning af ter six months’ ordinary maternity leave, you are entitled to return to the same job you were doing before you had your baby if the job still exists. If you take more than six months’ maternity leave, you have the right to return to your job unless it isn’t reasonably practicable. If it isn’t, you are entitled to be offe fered an available suitable alternative job.

Second - consider flexible working Many parents need flexibility to successfully manage a career and the care of a baby. Flexibility makes the world of difference. This could include a reduced working week, adjusted hours, compressed hours or home working. If you have at least 26 weeks’ continuous service (most maternity returners will) you have the right to make a request for flexible working. If it’s unreasonably refused, you may have a legal claim against your employer.

Third - seek support fo for breastfeeding Many returning mothers feel they have no choice but to stop breastfeeding. You have a choice. Start a conversation with your employer, well before you return, about your plans. Fourth - don’t just acceptt redundancy You have special legal protection n whilst on maternity leave. If you are put at risk of redundancy and there is a suitable alternative job it should be offe fered to you. If it’s not, object.

You can work up to 10 0 days during your maternity leave without your leav ve being brought to an end. If you are taking shared d parental leave, you can take an additional 20 sha ared parental leave keeping in touch days, known as “SPLIT” “ days if your em mployer agrees to this.

Finally y - know your rightss I have lo ost count of the number off women I’ve spoken tto who are suddenly repla aced, overlooked or made e redundant having taken maternity leave. If you fin nd yourself unsupported, side-lined, redunda ant or discriminated again nst in any other way then make sure you know yo our rights. If it’s because e of your maternity leave o or childcare commitments, it’s against the law w. ALTERNATIVES TO PENSION CONTRIBUTIONS FOR HIGH EARNERS

f you top up your pension pot then some of the money you save may be eligible for tax relief, provided you’re within the pension contribution annual allowance. However, the tax relief rules are complex! Matt Merchant, an independent financial adviser at Scrutton Bland explains what this means for high earners. Since the beginning of the 2016/17 tax year, individuals earning over £150,000 a year may have had their annual allowance for pension contributions reduced from £40,000 to as low as £10,000 per annum. As we enter the 2019/20 tax year we are now in a position where someone’s maximum pension contribution, if they have not contributed over the past three tax years, could be as low as £40,000 to cover four tax years’ worth of allowances rather than £40,000 each year. If you (or your employer) makes pension contributions in excess of your annual allowance and available carry forward, you will face an annual allowance charge on the excess. is charge is applied in a similar way to Income Tax, so for high earners the excess pension contribution will likely suﬀer a tax charge of 45%. Combine these restrictions on pension contributions with the Lifetime Allowance for pensions savings (£1,055,000 in 2019/20) and there comes a point where making pension contributions becomes less suitable for high earners. Not only could the contributions face an annual allowance charge on the way in, eﬀectively removing the tax relief benefit, but when it comes to using your pension for its main purpose: retirement funding, there will be a Lifetime Allowance Charge if your 1 2 APRIL 2019

total pension savings exceed the Lifetime Allowance as well. So what else could high earning individuals do in place of pension contributions? One of the main reasons to review your pension contributions is the Income Tax relief available and the reduction this can have on your Income Tax liabilities. ere are specialist investments such as Enterprise Investment Schemes (EIS) and Venture Capital Trusts (VCT) that can be used to claim Income Tax relief of up to 30% of the amounts invested. Both of these investment structures oﬀer other tax benefits in addition to Income Tax relief but they are considered high risk investments and you should always seek independent financial advice before investing in these schemes. Other alternatives to pension contributions can include more established investments such as Stocks and Shares ISAs, General Investment Accounts and Investment Bonds. ese savings plans can be set-up in line with your individual attitude to risk and long-term objectives, but it is important that they are reviewed on an ongoing basis with your financial adviser to ensure they remain suitable. All of these options have their benefits, and come with their own tax advantages, so it is likely that no one solution will be appropriate on its own and a combination of investments may well be more beneficial. OAK-TREE SCHOOLS DEFY CUTS TO SCHOOL RESOURCES

few weeks ago an article for BBC Education focused on the recent funding shortfall at state schools. It has been reported that around 7,000 head teachers in England have written to 3.5 million parents saying that schools are facing a "funding crisis". e Head of one state school in South London told BBC Radio 4's Today Programme that she had been forced to make a "phenomenal amount of cuts" in every area of her school. "I've reduced the number of teaching groups, I've reduced the number of options that students have, I've increased class sizes." she said, adding that she had just £10 per pupil per year to fund basic needs such as books, and that parents were being asked to pay for more and more. It is partly due to the funding shortfall faced in the state system that more parents are now are choosing a private education for their children. With a number of local prep and all-through schools in our area, there are many reasons why parents try to give their children the experience of a private school and why it can be worth the financial investment. e Oak-Tree Group consists of Braeside School in Buckhurst Hill, Coopersale Hall in Epping, Normanhurst in North Chingford and Oaklands in Loughton. Judges for this exciting new competition will include Kevin McCloud and Jenny Gibbs from the KLC School of Design. Established faavvourites such as Kevin’s Green Heroes will showcase the most ground-breaking and eco-friendly products on the market, and the popular Ask An Expert returns with a host of inspiring and infor mative seminars at The Grand Theatre . As part of the linking between Grand Designs Liivve and National Custom and Self Build W Week, eek, talks and an expert clinic focusing on Self-Build will take place on weekdays, including topics themed around ‘Busting the myths of Self-Build’. Grand Designs Liivve feels strongly that supporting this initiatiivve is important as the UK has a much lower rate of self-building than other European countries. “Kaleidoscope is a timely exploration of our relationship with our surroundings, asking viewers to reconsider the way we engage with our environment - and indeed art itself with our senses”

ALEIDOSCOPE is a new exhibition featuring the work of 9 international contemporary artists working across a variety of mediums. It examines the distortion of human perception, moving from normal domestic spaces, to turbulent nautical vistas and eventually complete abstraction. From the disruptive work of Mia Feuer, who addresses the post-natural landscape and our effect on it, to Pierre Carreau’s emotionally charged depictions of waves, the diverse media on display form a kaleidoscopic representation of the world, revealing a constantly changing sequence of elements and mediums. Kaleidoscope presents an exciting mixture of contemporary artists from around the world. Other featured artists include Tillman Kaiser whose dynamic paintings and sculptural works are meditations of history, style and form; Whitney Bedford whose tempestuous seascapes act as motifs for connecting the past and the present, and the young painter Florence Hutchings who will be presenting a series of vivid still-life paintings inspired by everyday life. THE ARTISTS Whitney Bedford - received her MFA at the University of California, Los Angeles in 2003. She had solo exhibitions in the US, New Zealand, France, Germany and Czech Republic. Laura Buckley - trained at the Chelsea College of Art and Design, London, and her work features in the Saatchi Gallery and Zabludowicz Collections, among others. Pierre Carreau - born near Paris, Pierre moved to the Caribbean island of Saint Barth in 2004, where he works on high-speed photographic exploration of wave shapes. Mia Feuer - received her BFA from the University of Manitoba in 2004 and her MFA in 2009 from the Department of Sculpture + Extended Media at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her work was included in the first ever female only exhibition at The Saatchi Gallery. Tom Howse - trained at the Wimbledon College of Art, and has exhibited across Europe. Florence Hutchings - undertaking a Painting degree at Slade School of Fine Art and has been awarded the Lynn Painters Stainers Prize (20162019). Tillman Kaiser – has had solo exhibitions in New York, Rome, Madrid, Los Angeles, Prague, and London, among others. Peter Linde Busk - trained at the Royal Academy of Arts and the Hunter Slade School of Fine Art, and has exhibited across Europe. Benedetto Pietromarchi - studied classical sculpture at Accademia delle Belle Arti in Carrara, Italy, and at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. Instead, the most recognisable characteristics, clothing or accessories help distinguish her most loved artistic icons. Shakespeare’s Globe announces

SUMMER SEASON 23 April – 11 October 2019

elebrating and interrogating their ‘sceptred isle’ through Shakespeare’s history plays, a year-long journey begins with Richard II, in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, continuing into the Globe Theatre this summer with Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, and Henry V. (opens 23 April) The cast will comprise the new resident Globe Ensemble, echoing the approach that Shakespeare’s company would have taken over 400 years ago. The season also includes A Midsummer Night’s Dream (opens 28 June) The Merry Wives of Windsor (opens 17 May) Ben Jonson’s Bartholomew Fair (opens 23 August) and the return of 2018’s As You Like It (opens 17 August) Robin Hood tales will form the core of the Read Not Dead series this year, and festivals throughout the summer include Women & Power and Poland is Hamlet. The Shakespeare’s Globe Touring Ensemble will once again present a trio of plays for the audience to choose from: The Comedy of Errors, Pericles, and Twelfth Night. (opens 4 May) .Continuing last summer’s experiment, which revived the Shakespearean tradition of allowing audiences to vote for the play they’d like to see, this year audiences will cast their votes for The Comedy of Errors, Twelfth Night or Pericles, all stories of lost families, new homes, and what it means to belong. The tour will return to the Globe stage for Refugee Week (17 - 23 June) as part of a wider programme of events in which refugee artists, performers and audiences will all share their stories. In May, Women & Power will comprise performances, panel events and workshops to highlight the work and voices of women of all backgrounds. In light of movements such as #MeToo and #TimesUp, the festival will ask some of the most important questions of the moment, exploring how theatre, music, art and poetry can have a part to play in social change. Shakespeare and Poland, a two-week festival commencing 26 June, will celebrate Poland’s affinity and fascination with Shakespeare’s works. The festival will combine theatre, film, illustration

and song, and will feature the remarkable Song of the Goat Theatre Company, with a rare opportunity to see their Songs of Lear. In celebration of Shakespeare’s birthday, Mark Rylance will bring together a company of 22 actors in Westminster Abbey to roam amongst the audience performing fleeting extracts of drama, poetry and song. his month we focus on the eye area, it is no surprise that the most common plastic surgery requested, is for eyelid surgery known as blepharoplasty. With age our skin thins, collagen and elastin levels deplete leading to sagging. Out of all of the facial areas, the eye area shows this ageing process firstly, ‘ many believe that the eyes are the window to the soul, unfortunately they also betray how old we are!’

Semi permanent make up solutions

Also carefully placed product can result in a brow lift and reduce the look of hooding. Dermal filler - depletion in fat to the temple areas and low eyebrow position can all be helped with small amounts of Hyaluronic Acid dermal filler to replace and restore lost volume that has attributed to a tired, sunken eye area. Furthermore treating hollow under eyes or deep tear trough lines can make a person look instantly fresher. However in some cases surgery could be the only option. ou may never have heard of Wing commander Ken Wallis, however he was not only a war time bomber pilot, he was also a stunt pilot in the James bond film you only live twice Ken Wallis was a pioneer in the development of the auto gyro the small plane Sean Connery flew in the film (little nelly as it was known), however it wasnâ€™t Sean Connery it was out man Ken. Ken lived in Norfolk in a wonderful house called Reymerson hall a Georgian property, which is situated between Dereham and Hingham, he famously kept and flew his collection of autogyros, including Little Nellie, which he designed himself, he flew these locally up until his 96th birthday. Sadly Wing Commander Wallis died at the

age of 97 and his house which remained empty for four years was in need of big repairs, it bought by Keith and Liz Holbrook, customers of Bathworks in Woodford. Keith and Liz have been customers of Bathworks for about ten years using them on a couple of projects, they like the quality products they oďŹ€er and the personal service they get from Bathworks Ltd. Keith and Liz bought Reymerson hall as a family home and an investment to renovate and run as a wedding and function venue and all the sanitary and bathroom furniture will be bought from Bathworks Although this will be a big project the end result will be a fabulous venue. Bathworks are proud to be involved in supplying goods for the new bathroom areas .n

or most people, purchasing a house will be the most expensive transaction they will have undertaken often many hundreds of thousands of pounds. It therefore stands to reason that the wisest thing one can do is to understand as much as possible about the property before entering into a binding contract. To obtain more information about the property the most eﬃcient thing to do is to commission a chartered surveyor to inspect that property prior to commitment to purchase. e surveyor will attend and inspect from top to bottom collecting notes as they go as well as photographs and will then prepare a full report which should be written out in terms that anyone can understand. e report will give information on roofing defects, problems with the gutters, structural defects and damp to name a few but ultimately will highlight any defect which could end up

costing you money on taking ownership of that house. Armed with a survey pointing out defects, it is possible to begin to get a picture of some of the costs that will be incurred and make an informed decision firstly whether to proceed with the purchase and secondly to renegotiate the price of the property. For example there may be £10,000 worth of structural work required and that will enable you to reopen negotiation reduce the price of the property accordingly eﬀectively rerating the value closer to where it should have been in the first instance. Proceeding with a house purchase without a survey is risky business, at the Hopps Partnership we provide the highest level of service and will always talk you through defects we find on site. n
