ast month we spoke to Bethan Edmondson, Wedding Co-ordinator from Buckinghamshire Golf Club and looked at 5 of her ‘top-tips’ for perfect wedding planning. From the creation of a scrapbook filled with ideas, to selecting your venue, suppliers, invites and an itinerary for the day – the planning is crucial to ensure that your day runs smoothly. This month we look at her final 5 top-tips for a perfectly planned day. 1. DRESS & SHOES- No doubt you will have been looking for a dress for a while. Try lots on! Go for different styles – you may surprise yourself with your final choice! Once you have it, start the dress fittings. The wedding boutique can assist you with this, and often have their own in-house seamstress on hand to make any alterations. And don’t forget the shoes... 2. HAIR/MAKEUP- Make sure you have at least one trial before the big day. This will ensure that you have exactly your desired look. Have you considered booking a trial for your bridal party? 3. FINALISE & CONFIRM- Check with the venue that chef and suppliers are the same as your taster sessions – you don’t want any surprises with the food on the big day! Confirm menu choices, speak with the florist, the cake decorator - will they need anything specific at the venue? Arrange to meet the photographer at the venue to walk round, identifying those perfect spots for that special shot. Formulate a schedule for the photographs; plan the group shots. Double check the arrival times of your suppliers and make sure your venue is aware of these. 4. RSVP’s- Gather all of your RSVP’s. Check for any dietary requirements and let the venue/caterers know. Finalise your seating plan and distribute copies. If any guests have special responsibilities on the day run through them just one more time. 5. ENJOY- After all of the planning, the time has now come to finally get married. Have trust in everyone involved and enjoy the day.

I
n her late 20s and with her career on track, Ruth Romano-Jackson decided that there was more to life than work. She had seen a glider for the first time at the age of 10 when one landed in a field near her home, and she went with her family to chat to the pilot. This created a lasting impression, so when looking at the list of things she had always wanted to do, she chose a new adventure – gliding. The next weekend she went to Booker Gliding Club, the nearest to her home in west London, for a trial lesson. Her instructor explained what would happen during the flight and made her feel that this was something she could do. They went flying - and Ruth was hooked. She went home with lots of information about the various options and decided on a 5 day course, which she booked for that October. The
course gave her time to develop her basic flying skills, learn about the controls and how to fly the glider. She remembers in particular struggling with the aerotow and the satisfaction when she finally got it right. She built on this over the following months, developing her piloting skills, and went solo in May. She has a vivid memory of the feeling of freedom and quiet, the excitement and exhilaration, the slightly scary thought that she would have to land the glider by herself – and the massive sense of 12 JANUARY 2016
achievement when the flight was over – her first solo! Since then Ruth has continued to expand her experience, flying different glider types. She has also been on one of Booker’s expeditions – to Talgarth in Wales, where she was introduced to ridge soaring. She found flying along close to the mountain very exhilarating, giving a real sense of speed. Ruth finds that the main obstacle to progress is time, as she has a high-pressure job requiring travel, and her days off do not always coincide with the fickle British weather. However, she says that it is possible to fit gliding around work and that doing the 5 day course gave her a good foundation so it was easy to return for more lessons. Her goal for 2016 is to complete her Bronze badge and start flying cross-country. t’s Henley Design Day on Saturday 5 March. Around 20 architects and building design professionals will be at Henley Town Hall for you to chat to about ideas for your building project. But how do you choose the right architect? The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), organisers of the Design Day suggests: First, prepare a clear brief. Decide what your proposed building is to achieve; and what your overall expectations are. You also need to think about your design style. Should the new building be in keeping with the existing? Do you want something contemporary or high-tech? Is sustainability a priority? Add in photos and any plans that you have.
Consult with several architects before you commit. Ask to see a portfolio of their work (which they will have at the Design Day) and visit their websites. You might also visit their finished projects and talk to other clients. Architects apply impartial, creative thinking to projects of every size. Do you like their buildings? If you can’t find a suitable architect at the Design Day, visit the RIBA’s Find an Architect service at www.architecture. com/FindAnArchitect. You can search by location and by specialism. The service lists RIBA Chartered Practices, which must comply with strict criteria covering insurance, health and safety and quality management. Talk about money. aving opened in December 2015, this free exhibition features 20 awe-inspiring images from this year’s world-renowned competition. Head of the Natural History Museum at Tring, Paul Kitching said, ‘We are excited to be able to share a new format for this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year with our visitors, here in Tring. The beautiful back-lit winning images and slideshow look really impressive and will offer visitors a free taste of the atmospheric experience of the full exhibition at our Natural History Museum in London.’ Winners of this year’s prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition were announced in October at an awards ceremony held at the Natural History Museum in London. Canadian amateur photographer Don Gutoski was named Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2015 by a panel of international judges for his image A tale of two foxes, a beautiful but haunting portrait of the struggle for life in the subarctic climes of Cape Churchill, Canada. Cape Churchill is where the range of the red fox and the more northern Arctic fox overlap. ‘The Churchill guides had heard that the two species will occasionally fight, but no one we talked to had ever seen this behaviour’, says Don. ‘I first noticed the red fox hunting and interacting with some prey and on closer approach realised that prey was a white Arctic fox. By the time I got close enough to capture the event, the fight was over and the victor was feeding.’ Jury member and National Geographic magazine’s senior editor for natural history projects Kathy Moran says, ‘The immediate impact of this photograph is that it appears as if the red fox is slipping out of its winter coat. What might simply be a straightforward interaction between predator and prey struck the jury as a stark example of climate change, with
red foxes encroaching on Arctic fox territory. The bottom line is, this image works on multiple levels. It is graphic, it captures behaviour and it is one of the strongest single storytelling photographs I have seen.’ Meanwhile 14-year-old Ondřej Pelánek from the Czech Republic won the Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2015 title for his image Ruffs on display. Ruffs are waders and are known for their warlike behaviour during courting. The image was taken in Norway, on Varanger’s tundra, around 15 kilometres inland. ‘Far away behind the polar circle we observed fighting ruffs,’ says Ondřej. ‘I took this photograph at midnight when my father was sleeping. I was too excited, so stayed awake.’ Kathy Moran said of the image, ‘This is a complex, beautifully layered photograph, a surprisingly sophisticated way of seeing that immediately generated buzz within the jury. The photographer has captured a moment that speaks to powerful behaviour, yet renders it as a delicate dance. You could spend a career trying to make this photograph. That it came from one of the younger entrants was just a thrill.’ The competition, owned by the Natural History Museum, London, is judged by a panel of industry-recognised professionals. Images, submitted by both professional and amateur photographers, are selected for their creativity, artistry and technical complexity. Grand title winners will be on display until 28 February 2016 at the Natural History Museum at Tring, while the full exhibition, featuring shortlisted and winning images from this year’s competition, is open until 10 April 2016 at the Natural History Museum in London.

New owners and new look for Abbey Fine Jewellery
O
ne of Berkhamsted’s best known retailers has been acquired by long established Cotswold jewellery group Miles Mann Ltd. Abbey Fine Jewellery which opened in the high street in 2005 is to undergo a significant makeover which will include an entirely new look front window display and lighting configuration. New owner Miles Mann is keen to preserve many of the qualities that have allowed the store to thrive over the years but will also be bringing new products and ideas to the business. Abbey Fine Jewellery will be the sixth store in the group which also trades in Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bourton on the Water and Bath. The original Mann Jewellers was established on Gloucester cross in 1741, making the business one of the oldest in the South West. This was recently recognised when the company picked up the Longevity Award at the 2015 Cotswold Life Family Business Awards. The firm was also named family business of the year by Gloucestershire Media Group in 2012.

The new look Abbey Fine Jewellery will stock a much larger range of antique and vintage jewellery as well as a greater selection of design led silver and giftware. The business will also now advertise to buy jewellery from the public. “A significant amount of our stock is purchased over our own counters and hand restored by our own craftsmen. This is one of the reasons we are able to offer such a varied selection of antique and vintage jewellery” explains Miles Mann. “ We also source our stock from our sister company Gold Buying Centres which buys direct from independent jewellers all over the UK. In order to make room for the new stock offering, we will be holding a major clearance sale as soon as we take control in January in advance of the upgrade to the display windows.” The group also uses its extensive contacts in the trade to source larger diamonds and coloured gems to meet individual customer needs and will offer a bespoke design service in store. The company may be one of the oldest in the South West but it uses new technology in store to enhance customer experience and choice. Shoppers can use tablets to browse a

hilfest 2016 will take place on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th July 2016 bringing two days of the very best sounds from the 1980s to the leafy rural setting of Tring in Hertfordshire. Chilfest is a boutique music festival situated in the beautiful Chiltern hills, featuring original live bands from the 1980s. With a capacity of 7,000 people for each day, Chilfest provides festival goers and acts alike with an intimate yet lively atmosphere which enhances the music experience for all involved. The story so far Chilfest is the brain child of Steve Butcher who lives in Tring. As Managing Director of Universal Event Productions (UEP), Steve has provided event staging and rigs for a wide variety of top live events throughout the country, including many music festivals.

the story so far A keen 80s music lover, Steve first had the idea of bringing live music from original 80s bands to the local area whilst in the garden at a friend’s barbecue one evening and the seed for Chilfest was sown. The 15th anniversary of UEP gave Steve the chance to bring his dream to life when he decided to stage a concert for the local community to celebrate his business achievements. Originally designed to be a one-off event, Steve set out to create a top quality music event for local people to enjoy and announced that the event would also support a local charity, Rennie Grove Hospice Care who provide specialist care for patients diagnosed with cancer and other life-limiting illness and support for their families. The Inaugural Chilfest was staged at Pendley Meadow in Tring in July 2013 and featured a lively pop night on the Friday headlined by Little Mix and a show-stopping line up of stars from the 1980s on the Saturday, including Tony Hadley, Rick Astley, Howard Jones, Midge Ure, Hazel O’Connor and Carol Decker which saw the night sell out to its 7,000 capacity. The quality of the production, which included some of the latest moving light and LED screen technologies, received many accolades and earned Chilfest a nomination in two categories at the 2013 UK Festival Awards. Repeating the success Although not his original intention, the success of the event encouraged Steve to consider running Chilfest again in 2014, and again in 2015. Search for Bucks artistic talent underway B ucks Open Studios, the largest visual arts event in Buckinghamshire and one of the biggest in the country, is on the hunt for local artists and makers to take part in its 2016 event. The annual artistic extravaganza, takes place 11-26 June 2016, and will see artists and makers including painters, ceramicists, glass workers, jewellery makers, photographers and print makers once again opening up their studios to the public for an impressive line-up of free demonstrations, hands-on workshops and exhibitions. Bucks Open Studios organisers, Bob and Ann Marshall explain: “We would love to see some new creative talent taking part in next year’s Bucks Open Studios. It is a popular and important annual event for the visual arts and we are delighted to be once again offering an insight in to the wealth of creativity that is still so prevalent in our county.” “So, if you’re a local amateur or professional artist or maker then why not be part of this well established and vibrant event? It’s important to be the ‘FAVOURITE GRANDFATHER’ I thought the title would be eye catching and present an ‘official’ feel to an absurd way of looking at things.
W
e were recently delighted to receive a copy of a very entertaining, interesting book entitled ‘Standing Operating Procedures for Grandfathers’. Written by Berkhamsted resident Malcolm Allen, he takes a look at the relationship of the Grandfather with the Grandchildren. Here is what he has to say about it.
Malcom, describe what your book is all about
My book is a humorous treatise about the relationship between a grandfather and his grandchildren; a relationship which mixes love and pride with stress, exhaustion and frequent tight-lipped silences. Modern discipline is not what it used to be. It is important, however, to be the ‘favourite grandfather’ and that needs a solid foundation of preparation and planning. What better principles to base this strategy on but ‘The Ten Principles of War’ used by the British Army.
How did you come up with the title?
I thought the title would be eye catching and present an ‘official’ feel to an absurd way of looking at things.
Who is your intended audience, and why should they read your book? Parents, to give to their parents and vice versa. Parents because they will enjoy reading about what they have long suspected and grandparents because they will empathise with the sentiments. 26 JANUARY 2016
Tell us about where you grew up and a little about where you live now
I grew up in Aldershot with my mother and sister. For most of my early years my soldier father was away in the war, as a POW, and on overseas postings after that. We kids played in the streets and the park and it was fun. I joined the army, went to Sandhurst, and travelled the world; and a number of places in the UK. Got married at 34 but ten years, eight homes and two children later I resigned. I had a second career in industry and finished up running the Hertfordshire County Show which was enormously satisfying. I settled in Berkhamsted where I am still happily living with Jill. The children were educated here, my wife taught here and I became immersed in the town through some charitable work, local government and golf.
What are your ambitions for your writing career?
I have written a series of ‘Adventures of the Famous Major Allen’ which went down well with my eldest grandsons and their parents. They are based in Africa, are entirely fictional and there are amusing bits in them which appeal to the adult reading to the child. I think they would make a popular series and a TV cartoon series.
What are your expectations for this book?
I would like to see it as the ‘best stocking filler’ in years. A book which gets a couple of reviews in the National Press because of its originality and which would sell well. Realistically, I would like to see the first print sell and a reprint ordered..

riginally from Swanage in Dorset, Chris’ passion, enthusiasm and culinary excellence was spotted and nurtured from a young age. Chris joined Stoke Park in 2003 and for the past 13 years he has steadily been building Stoke Park’s culinary reputation. Stoke Park’s fine dining restaurant, Humphry’s, holds 3 AA Rosettes. Set within Stoke Park’s stunning Palladian Mansion Humphry’s is a stunning, light-filled restaurant featuring panoramic views of both the estate and the lake. The restaurant has both à la carte and table d’hôte menus available for lunch, as well as a three-course dinner menu and 7 course taster menu. The name Humphry’s originates from the famous British landscape designer Humphry Repton. In 1790’s, Humphry Repton created some of the main features of the magnificent landscape at Stoke Park. In particular he designed the beautiful bridge that you can see from the restaurant. The menu at Humphry’s offers modern British cuisine with a twist.

Humphry’s was voted in the ‘Top 20 Best out of Town Restaurants’ by Harper’s Bazaar, ‘Top 5 Out of Town Restaurants’ by the Square Meal Restaurant Guide, won ‘Best Local Menu’ for his use of local produce at the Buckinghamshire and Berkshire Life Food and Drink Awards, he was a finalist for ‘ Chef of the Year’ at the Hotel Cateys and featured in Tatler’s Restaurant Guide 2013 and again in 2014, with the editor writing in the guide that Chris had cooked two of the best dishes he had eaten all year! Chris’ flexibility as a chef is legendary, whether it’ll be recreating the Olympic torch as an exquisite cake to celebrate London 2012 or cooking at Stoke Park’s annual Boodles event. This five day tennis challenge, which is in its 15th year,
takes place at the end of June every year and sees Chris and his team plate up just under 9000 delicious three course lunches and afternoon teas. His incredible flexibility continues as, for example, if he’s not whisking up culinary delights for guests, he is running the marathon dressed as a chef and carrying a stock pot or flipping pancakes all the way, raising tens of thousands pounds for charity. Chris’s values run deep with cooking for the homeless on Christmas Day, donating himself for cook-off ’s and charity master classes which importantly raise money for good causes. If you haven’t met Chris before you may have heard him on the radio, appearing on a number of different channels and shows including Capital FM, BBC Berkshire and Chef Radio, on topics varying from an insight into his dishes to his views on local produce and developing cooking techniques. og owners now have a home-based alternative to kennels, thanks to Wagging Tails! This gives dogs in the HP postcode area their very own holiday as the only guest in the home of a specially selected dog carer. Wagging Tails HP was up last year by Simon Eccles with the help of his dog Benji, who goes with him to meet prospective carers. “We have people coming to us who say it’s such a relief to find us,” Simon says. “Some have felt for years that they could not leave their dog while they went on holiday, having used kennels before and not liking the experience. Now they can leave their dogs in a home environment, knowing they will get all the attention, walks, play time and cuddles that they deserve. “We insist that owners and their dogs go along to meet carers in advance of the stay, so they can see that it’s a good place to leave them,” Simon explains. “We never board more than one family’s dogs at once, though some carers have a friendly dog of their own.” Simon has appointed a network of carefully chosen home carers. All are experienced current or former dog owners. They are at home during the day, have been licenced by their local council and are fully insured. “We’ve had everything from Chihuahuas to German Shepherds and they all had fun with our carers,” Simon says. The Wagging Tails HP branch covers all areas with postcodes starting with HP, taking in High Wycombe, Beaconsfield, Hemel Hempstead, Amersham, Berkhamsted, Aylesbury, Tring, Princes Risborough and surrounding areas.
“We’ve still got vacancies for carers in the South Bucks area from High Wycombe to Hemel Hempstead and places in between,” says Simon. Many Wagging Tails carers describe the role as being like that of a grandparent - all the fun, then you get to give them back and look forward to the next visit! As well as the companionship of dogs, carers receive a small daily payment. The Wagging Tails network was first established in 2007 by Lisa Suswain, an experienced dog carer who set up a home dog boarding service near the south coast. There are now 20 local branches of Wagging Tails, each covering a postcode area.

Freemasons’ donation helps Hospice Patients at South Bucks Hospice are going into the New Year with new technology that will allow them to communicate from their own homes directly with health experts.
T
he Hospice was given a donation of £2,700 by Buckinghamshire Freemasons which has allowed them to buy ten tablet computers and fund an ongoing programme of support over the internet. We are so grateful to the Freemasons because this means our patients will be able to get the care and support they so badly need even if they cannot get in to see us at the Hospice for whatever reason,” said Hospice Chief Executive Jo Woolf. “They will be able to communicate with nurses, therapists and physios from the comfort of their homes thanks to this telecare project, a major step forward in terms of hospice care.” South Bucks Hospice is currently trialling the scheme with a group of patients who will be ‘road testing’ the tablets in the new year. And the Hospice is also working in conjunction with the Centre of Excellence for Telehealth and Assisted Living at Bucks New University to set up the necessary protocols to ensure online safety and security. Physiotherapist Charlotte Hopkins said: “It’s so exciting to drive a project that supports rehabilitative palliative care. Our challenge for the New Year is to make this really successful because it will ultimately help us to help more people, and will mean the patients will be able to seek our full support even if they cannot make it in to see us.” Steve Smirthwaite, from the Bucks Masonic Centenary

The capital’s biggest and best grows yet again Crammed with innovative features, mouth-watering classic cars and a star-studded list of celebrity visitors, The London Classic Car Show will grow to double the size and content of its hugely successful 2015 show.
T
he latest addition to the Show is an entire new hall that will be dedicated to the best single marque classic car clubs. Show organiser, Brand Events will be working with around 25 leading car clubs devoted to prestige and performance cars to create a stunning display of privately owned classics from the 1920s to the 21st century.
Salute to the ‘Greatest car of the 20th Century’
Unique display at the London Classic Car Show celebrates the McLaren F1 and its creator, Gordon Murray. Produced between 1992 and 1998, just 106 examples were built. Of that figure a mere 64 were standard road cars, so there’s only a remote chance of seeing one in the flesh. A special display devoted to the F1 and curated by designer Gordon Murray will form one of the major attractions at the show.No fewer than five F1s will be shown – two standard road cars, two GTR racers and a ‘long tail’ F1 GT road car. To give visitors a unique insight into the world’s first ‘million dollar motor’ – the McLaren cost £634,500 when new – one of the road cars will be displayed with its doors, bonnet and engine cover open, while one of the racers will have its exterior panels removed to show what goes on under the skin. One of the unique features of the London Classic Car Show is ‘The Grand Avenue’ a roadway running through the centre of the exhibition hall along which classics of all different shapes and sizes are put through their paces. It is anticipated that one of the McLarens will take to The Grand Avenue during the show, so visitors will not just be able to gaze at this remarkable British car at rest, but see and hear it in action, too. Tickets for the London Classic Car Show are on sale now and start at £23 (including booking fee) for single adult entry on Friday, Saturday or Sunday and rise to £65 for entry to Thursday’s Premium Preview Evening. This includes fast track entry, the best views of The Grand Avenue at the Turning Circle Viewing Platform, access to the exclusive Premium Lounge, a Show 44 JANUARY 2016
Handbook and even a glass of Joseph Perrier Champagne. The London Classic Car Show will also have a number of other new features, including ‘Classic Corner’, an open forum running virtually continuously throughout the show where guest speakers will talk about classic cars as investments, about the pleasure a classic car can bring and offer advice about buying at auction. More dealers and more trade stands are also promised. A standard adult entry ticket will cost £23 (children £17) with family tickets at £65. Why do I need regular check-ups when there are no problems with my teeth? A. When we check your teeth at the practice, we see things you won’t see in the mirror no matter how closely you look. Just by saying open wide we can detect a number of problems that aren’t visible to the untrained eye. And the technology available to us gives us an additional advantage! Your teeth can alert us to... • Possible deterioration in fillings, crowns, and other restorations. • We may spot the beginnings of root cavities or decay on the roots of your teeth which have been laid bare by receding gums. • A close inspection can reveal troublesome periodontal pockets caused by gum disease, and sometimes it takes a
radiograph and a little dental detective work, but we may even find indications of... • New decay tucked under the gum line or hidden under existing fillings – two places you just can’t see! • You may not know it, but your teeth may have hairline fractures. • You may not feel it yet, but a wisdom tooth may be impacted. • Your gums can tell us about impending gum disease and your mouth may even show... • The early warning signs of oral cancer. All of these dental problems can be treated and often reversed if they are spotted in the early stages. If you are ever tempted to skip an appointment because you don’t feel any pain and can’t see anything wrong, think again. It’s what you can’t see that can cause the most trouble! Q. Can you give me some advice on looking after my children’s teeth? A. While brushing is essential to ensure strong teeth, it also helps to prevent socially embarrassing conditions, like bad breath. The threat of future cavities may not hold much weight when kids are rushing out the door. Sometimes it’s the social angle that prompts them to pay more attention to their smile. Tips for kids of all ages to promote healthy teeth and fresh breath: • Use a soft brush. • Always use fluoride toothpaste. • Brush your teeth at least twice daily. • Brush your tongue gently and thoroughly and as far back as is comfortable. • Floss daily, preferably before bed, to remove harmful food and plaque from between teeth. • Wear a custom-fitted mouthguard when playing sports. • Eat a balanced diet complete with milk products and crunchy vegetables. Gum disease is often thought to be an adult problem, but children and teens are also susceptible. Just like adults, kids want to look and feel good, so encourage your child to start now to ensure a bright smile for tomorrow! School-aged children become increasingly aware of their appearance, and the smallest thing may be the cause of self-consciousness. Their next checkup appointment will present an ideal time for the dentist to assess their smile and to discuss orthodontic options. ave you noticed how many families these days fill their shopping trolleys with bottled water? Especially families where the mum, dad and kids take part in sport and use bottled water to keep hydrated. Most families don’t consider just how much they spend on bottled water a year; if they did it would probably alarm them. An average family of 4 spends well over £3,000 on bottled water a year. RESPIRATORY CONDITIONS IN WINTER

his is the time of year when severe weather snaps can cause common colds or influenza to lead to chest infections, Pneumonias and exacerbations of existing respiratory conditions, such as Asthma and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); the biggest effects being on people over aged 65. Practice Nurse Fiona Ison at DOCTORnow explains more. Respiratory conditions such as Asthma and COPD should be well controlled and managed using prescribed inhalers following individualised management plans, drawn up between you and your GP or Nurse. ASTHMA Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition in the airways. It is well controlled if a reliever inhaler (blue) is required no more than two times per week. If a cough and wheeze is causing you to need the blue inhaler more frequently, we would advise you to see your GP or nurse for a review of inhalers. Signs of uncontrolled Asthma can include an increasing need for the reliever inhale, waking at night with wheeze or cough, or in children, a consistent night time cough as well as a wheeze and shortness of breath that impacts on day to day activities. CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE COPD is a general term used to describe a number of respiratory conditions, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Characterised by airways which have become permanently narrowed, causes can be occupational, occasionally inherited, but predominantly the result of smoking. Keeping well with this condition requires regular 62 JANUARY 2016
use of prescribed inhalers, staying active and good nutrition, keeping warm as well as close monitoring by a doctor or nurse. Using home rescue medications, guided by a management plan can also help during times of exacerbations. Stunning beautiful contemporary design work within a large multifunctional space, with dining and relaxed seating, together with the kitchen at its heart. The main focus was to create a space for a family to live, relax and enjoy. David and Laura can cook while keeping an eye on the children’s homework and when entertaining, they can interact with guests whilst preparing food and drinks. The large windows benefit the space, filling it with natural light, giving the room an airy feel. We designed the kitchen with this in mind, as we wanted to ensure a free flow and uncluttered look. The open plan space gave us the opportunity to explore different details, textures, lighting and colours. The centrepiece of this bespoke St Giles Furniture kitchen is the large island, hand painted in Farrow & Ball Plummett, with its induction hob, integrated downdraft extraction. We incorporated a space for seating, with bar stools, for a more relaxed dining space – also great for the morning rush. t Giles Furniture is a family run furniture specialist, with over 25 years experience in designing, creating and fitting furnishing solutions. Over the years we have built up a strong heritage that has grown with our continued passion for design, quality furniture, dedication to detail and customer service. We are able to offer a truly bespoke service with the ability to design and fit furniture in any room within your home. Every thing we do is considered and made to order. This recent project, as is the case with many of our commissions, came through a recommendation from one of our existing clients. David and Laura had the opportunity to build a home to suit their busy lifestyle and family needs. They were looking for a contemporary design, yet they wanted to use traditional cabinet construction and materials. Being a newly built home, we had the opportunity to
door racks – enough storage for everyone. The long sink run, again hand painted in Farrow & Ball Ammonite, is very functional, with two integrated dishwashers and a Quooker boiling water tap, keeping things very convenient. As with every project, we worked closely with our client to choose appliances, worktops, cabinet colours and of course internal fittings, to offer an inviting, practical space for the family to live in and enjoy. Once every aspect was agreed, the furniture was made to measure in our own workshop based in Lincolnshire, delivered and fitted by our own experienced team. Following on from the kitchen, we were also asked to designed and complete furniture for other rooms, which included the utility room with stacked laundry appliances, a large study and a dressing room with a fully fitted walk-in wardrobe. As with every thing we do, we approached each room as an individual project, with its own design brief and concepts. Different finishes were used to give different textures to each room, yet the continuity was achieved through the integration of our furniture throughout the home. We completed this project in the summer of 2015 and have already received referrals from David and Laura. The Story of a Home Libraryy The library as a room, as well as a collection of bookss, has a long and vibrant history in the English housee, and remains an indispensable room for the educated and wealth hy.
I
n this digital age, it may surprise you to read that more people want libraries than cinemas in their homes. Books have lost none of their appeal, with many people carrying “old friends” they have loved reading from house to house. Installing libraries and reading rooms in homes does not belong to yesteryear either. The British Interior Design Association reports many of its members converting second sitting rooms into libraries. In today ’s environment-conscious world, they also have another valuable function. Books are the original insulator. A shelf of books along an outside wall works well to prevent heat escaping, and if all the books were removed from the homes in Britain, our energy bills would rocket. et TOP TIPS ON INST TALLING A LIBRAR RY You need plenty of natural light, but avoid sunlight falling directly on to your books as this can damage them. Either have closed curtains or shutters on your windows for when you are not using your library, or don’t install bookshelves directly opposite a south or west facing window w. Well-directed reading lights are essential, with an adjustable arm over a favourite chair. On the shelves themselves, well-shaded bar shaped librarry lights will help you find your chosen volume. Books and paper are prone to decay and mould in the wrong conditions, with excess warmth and damp and too much dust the main culprits. Keep your librarry cool and dry and dust books regularlyy, from the spine outwards using a sofft brush. When installing shelves, use natural wood, simply waxed, or if painted, use organic paints to minimise chemical damage. Cooking fumes are not good for books so, if you can, use a room far away from the kitchen. You don’t have to have a dedicated library. Install bookshelves in a room such as a playroom or small sitting room. Use this room for music practice or board and card games, to encourage children to have a room where television and computer games are banned. Depending on the wood you use and the finish, installing a bay of books ranges from hundreds for a plain pine bookcase to several thousand pounds for mahoganyy. Ensure the shelves are at least an inch thick and no more than four feet long otherwise they will bow under the weight of books. Taller shelves for heavier books should be along the bottom, with paperbacks at the top.
