Christmas is a wonderful time to enjoy parties, dining and socialising. However, a great party is the result of a phenomenal amount of pre-event work. Fortunately, with local shops like Waitrose, Sainsburys and Tesco offering deliveries, this can take the brunt and back pain out of the heavy shopping, however in order to really prepare yourself for hours in the kitchen – it is imperative to just unwind and be both physically and emotionally ready for the onslaught and hours in the kitchen – we take a look at getting things in order easily. e ‘Love Essex’ campaign led to a reduction of over 40% in fast food litter across the county. e campaign, running throughout the summer, saw Essex local authorities join forces with Essex County Council, RP2 media, e Highways Agency and fast food partners, McDonalds, KFC and Dominos, to raise awareness of the issue of litter and the risk of fines for those that offend. It also gained national support from environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, which undertook a review of the campaign, including monitoring of specific sites over several weeks. Its findings have shown a 21% overall decrease in the amount of litter across the county, with a 41% decrease in branded fast food litter. e leaves are falling and many of the woodland creatures in Epping Forest are snuggling down for the big winter snooze. Should we too, hibernate and stay indoors, until the warmer weather lures us out once more? No way! ere’s far too much fun to be had in the Forest as autumn well and truly takes its hold and winter creeps into view. Make the most of having Epping Forest, a huge ancient woodland, on your doorstep and take a trip out to the woods when there is a chill in the air (or even when it is downright freezing!). Nature’s very own playground awaits, whatever the weather. We look forward to seeing you in December.

harity Champion Lloyd Moulder, Co-Founder of designer bathroom supplier BathWorks, based in Woodford Green, has achieved his target to raise £10,000 for Haven House Children’s Hospice at the same time as celebrating the company’s 10 years in business. “Last September the Hospice was celebrating 10 years of caring so it was a very good match” said Lloyd. “It’s taken a year and in that time I have enjoyed taking on various fundraising challenges and people have been generous.” Haven House said thanks to Lloyd with an invitation to visit the Hospice to mark his support for the charity’s Pay for a Day scheme. He signed the Book of Days, received a special framed certificate and met mascot Henry the Hound. Pay for A Day is an opportunity for donors to provide 24 hours of care, support and fun for local life-limited children. It costs £3,835 and could be the day a child comes to the newly enhanced hospice surroundings for the first time and discovers all the great things there to play with and enjoy. Or it could be the day a family spends together outside playing or exploring the large gardens. Haven House supports young people from North and East London, West Essex and East Hertfordshire 365 days a year. Lloyd said “Family life is precious to all of us and even more so when you see what is achieved at Haven House. e charity has always been close to my heart because of the

he latest round of Oak-Tree Schools Open Day events at Coopersale Hall, Normanhurst and Oaklands School were even busier than expected and many families were pleased to be able to register their child to join.

Epping’s Coopersale Hall School saw many new families visiting not just from Epping, eydon Bois and North Weald, but also from Chigwell, Buckhurst Hill and Woodford to see the school in action. Visitors were escorted around the 7 acre site by Year 6 pupils and heard about the school from the children’s perspectives. Headmistress Kaye Lovejoy highlighted some of the reasons parents choose Coopersale Hall for their children; “Parents are increasingly looking for a wide range of clubs and activities in addition to high academic standards and thorough preparation for 11+ entry. We have some excellent facilities that include the new classroom block, studio, astroturf and playing fields”. Due to increased demand, North Chingford’s Normanhurst School held an Open Evening for Juniors and Seniors and an Open Morning for younger children aged 2½ to 5. Both were very well attended and parents were keen to hear from Headmistress Claire Osborn about the entrance procedures at each level, the personalised GCSE education programme and the success rate at 16 with most pupils studying A Levels at local VI Form schools and colleges. Head Boy Rehaan and Head Girl Lucy spoke articulately about their life at Normanhurst and how being part of a small school helped them grow their self-esteem and develop their confidence. At Oaklands, in Loughton, many new parents commented that they were impressed by the confidence and friendliness of the older pupils who acted as guides around the extensive site. Headmistress Cheryl Macnair emphasised the value of developing excellent relationships with parents, and was keen to chat with families about the unique experiences that Oaklands provides. She commented, “my door is always open for parents to come and talk about any aspect of their child’s schooling. We know the pupils and their families well and we have an impressive track record securing our Year 6 pupils’ first choice senior schools out of the wide variety in this area.”

A great day necessitates a lot of planning. Organising food, guests, table arrangements and the million and one other things, which make it all seem effortless. So where do you begin? Well it may seem strange at first but before I’m uber-busy, running around so fast that I feel like a hamster spinning in a wheel, I stop…. Take stock… think and plan. What better environment than a spa to strategize all the details. Having looked at the maps and various spas, I decided to trial Aqua Sana in Woburn Park. ere is nothing to beat the mother/daughter experience of pampering, pleasure and total calm. My daughter Amy agreed – so we booked. e drive was comfortable but long, so worth taking an interesting passenger or a preferred CD! en into a haven of relaxation, calmness and peace. We were not disappointed!.. A welcome drink – a cosy robe and a choice of 25 experience

rooms, all inspired by nature and beautifully designed. As Aqua Sana’s flagship, the spa was very modern and had all those finishing touches which enhance a perfect experience. Compared to the other Aqua Sana spas (as I’ve visited them all) – this was by far the best; noticeably quieter and serene, people whispered as they spoke. THE SPA HAS 25 EXPERIENCE ROOMS INCLUDING: l e Fire and Ice Spa (felt very Scandinavian) l e Blossom spa (an exotic retreat) l e Herbal Spa (great room to help you feel cleansed) l e Sensory Spa (particularly good for meditating) l melted away the stress leaving you feeling purified and very clean). l e Salt spa – A retreat into the Himalayas. Having cleansed and showered, the next step was a little dip into the pool. Although described as the Infinity Pool – I felt that perhaps this was a little ambitious. e view stretched into the forest and as Amy commented, looked like the setting for the film Dirty Dancing – especially with the chalets. Our imaginations wandered to the film’s highlights and especially its star performers… but then back to Woburn Forest and our reality in Aqua Sana.

Next part of the day was for the treatments; they were terrific. We both savoured a facial and then some peaceful respite (as if more was needed) in a quiet area where we were just too relaxed to talk. We both enjoyed a wonderful day; it felt as if we had been on holiday for a week – then whilst driving back in the car, we starting making plans and lists for what we needed to do, in order to ensure a great Christmas party. e list didn’t feel too daunting, the spa had served its purpose. eaders of the Essex series of the magazine will recognise Neil King’s advertisement in the magazines for Neil King Residential – Sales and Letting. However his daughter now wears the crown - 10 year old Claudia King who attends St. Nicholas School in Old Harlow, is sporting royalty of the triathlon. e ISA National East Triathlon was held at Woodlands School, Hutton Manor, Brentwood on 3rd October. Although she has only just taken up this sport, it is a phenomenal success that she won, beating the other 201 competitors (girls and boys) from the 15 independent schools across the area under the remit of ISA East Region. Her parents, Laura and Neil King, together with 13 years old brother George, are elated. “We are very proud to see Claudia win this fantastic event. As parents, it’s so special when you see your child’s hard work - really pay off.” LAURA AND NEIL KING As a keen athlete and sports champion, Claudia also swims for the Harlow Penguins and trains at least four nights a week. She also runs for the Woodford Green athletic club, plus she has represented the school for swimming and track events during the summer. In addition, she has represented the school on a regional and national

level for the ISA cross country events. Claudia loves sport… Claudia also recently competed in a longer distance Triathlon in the Castle series competing in Hever Castle in Kent in September. She finished 26th girl and 90th overall out of 650 competitors. As this was her first competitive event for this sport, this was an incredible achievement after such a short time. Future success was clearly going to be guaranteed. Asked if she would like to pursue a sporting career – she would love to emulate the Brownlee brothers. However with this level of talent and determination – she would probably beat them too! Good Luck to our local sporting champion – Claudia King. A triathlon is a multiple-stage competition involving the completion of three continuous and sequential endurance disciplines. While many variations of the sport exist, triathlon, in its most popular form, involves swimming, cycling, and running in immediate succession over various distances n

We'll continue to tackle littering across the District and encourage even more people to 'Love Essex'.” Cherry Lewis-Taylor, McDonald’s Franchisee also added: “Since the ‘Love Essex’ campaign started, there has been a noticeable drop in the amount of litter that you see around the county which is great. I think the results of the campaign demonstrate the power of councils, businesses and communities working together across the whole of Essex." “I hope that we continue to see the amount of litter in the area decrease and would encourage people to carry on disposing of their litter responsibly.” Keep Britain Tidy Chief Executive Phil Barton added: “e ‘Love Essex’ campaign is a model of how, by working together, businesses and local authorities can make a real difference." “e partnership is to be congratulated on its successful

I know that most people who live, work and visit the area wouldn’t dream of dropping their rubbish but unfortunately there are a few whose anti-social behaviour can spoil the enjoyment of the area for everyone else. Not only is litter unsightly it also pollutes and damages the environment and harms the natural habitat of our local wildlife. “At Epping Forest District Council we have a number of initiatives designed to tackle the problem of litter. he leaves are falling and many of the woodland creatures in Epping Forest are snuggling down for the big winter snooze. Should we too, hibernate and stay indoors, until the warmer weather lures us out once more? No way! ere’s far too much fun to be had in the Forest as autumn well and truly takes its hold and winter creeps into view. Make the most of having Epping Forest, a huge ancient woodland, on your doorstep and take a trip out to the woods when there is a chill in the air (or even when it is downright freezing!). Nature’s very own playground awaits, whatever the weather. Report after report highlights how access to nature is good for children’s wellbeing. Obvious really though, isn’t it? Somehow a couple of hours in the fresh air playing with real objects, like sticks and leaves, beats time spent at indoor play handling plastic and foam that has seen better days and has certainly been used more than a few times as a convenient tissue for wiping little noses. A trip to Epping Forest is not only free, it is great fun and it is good for you! e beauty of a visit to the Forest is in the simplicity of going somewhere and just having a wander. See where it takes you. If you’re worried about getting lost, arm yourself with a map and a compass. e children will love getting to grips with orienteering. It’s the perfect time of year to get the children involved in collecting woodland objects to make their own seasonal colour

palette. Just get an A5 or A4 piece of card (the back of a cereal packet will do) and cover it in double sided sticky tape. Ask the children to find things on the forest floor in as many different shades as possible, different coloured and shaped leaves, beech masts, acorns...anything they come across (but obviously please do not pick anything and beware of fungi and berries which may be poisonous too). ere is a great programme of events in Epping Forest, though at the time of going to print the Christmas grotto at e View, Rangers Road, Chingford has already sold out for 2014 so make sure you book early to avoid disappointment next year. You can see the Forest captured in its winter wonder at an exhibition at e View from 6 December to January 2015. e View is open every day, except Christmas day, from 10am-5pm. any poets and authors have been inspired by nature at this wondrous time of the year. It is easy to feel their inspiration as you step out into Epping Forest, particularly on a crisp and clear autumnal day. Epping Forest’s Head of Conservation, Dr. Jeremy Dagley advises when the colours in the Forest this year will be at the best: “Given the autumn so far, the best colours are likely to be late October and early November. Hornbeam, especially the seeds, are turning now and beech should be at its best with intense yellows towards the end of the month. e oak will often turn later still and I’d highly recommend a trip to Barn Hoppitt (opposite Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge and e View, on Rangers Road, Chingford) around mid-November where you are likely to witness some amazing orange hues.” For a great view across the Forest canopy how about a visit to Woodbury Hollow in Loughton? e area south of Loughton Camp, one of the Forest’s two Iron Age earthworks and a Scheduled Monument, is well worth a visit too and there you can witness some great shades of yellow with the beech trees, offset against a green moss carpet. Other great areas to take in the autumn colours are the Warren Plantation, the beech woodlands around Monk Wood and the Furze Ground, close to Broadstrood car park. e autumn leaves on the Forest floor make a trip to Epping Forest with the children even more enjoyable than usual. Just add wellies for free and wholesome fun for all the family to enjoy together.

It is also quite enchanting to go out looking for fungi on the woodland floor at this time of year. e differing forms and colours of the fruiting bodies bring a different perspective to a visit to the Forest. Children and adults alike will enjoy a ‘fungi foray’ – a little guide book on identification (available to buy at our Forest Centre, e View, on Rangers Road, Chingford) can make this even more fun and rewarding. e fungi also make great subjects for photography or art. But please remember that it is against the byelaws to collect the fungi from the Forest, so please enjoy it but leave it where you find it for other visitors to enjoy. he local choir is well-known to the Life Series – we saw them kick-off the 2014 season by bringing the Baltics to South Woodford in Baltic Exchange, before e Triumphs of Oriana celebrated the works of English Elizabethan composers in Epping. e Meljon Singers later performed in the picturesque village of Westleton in Suffolk, where a loyal supporter hosted Heaven in a Wild Flower to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society. e choir recently returned to Woodford for In the Mood, a breath-taking concert of popular and jazz classics as part of Woodford Festival. What a year! December usually sees a flurry of local choirs arranging Christmas-themed events, and deciding which to attend is often a nice problem to have. e Meljon Singers have been as active as ever by carefully selecting their favourite English and European carols – the result is a magical concert programme that’s sure to bring some festive fuzziness. Budgets are often squeezed in the run up to 25 December, so it’s worth noting that On Christmas Night is free for under-18s, while Life Series readers can get discounted tickets if they’re booked in advance – see below for more info. e evening will feature Bob Chilcott’s stunning On Christmas Night; eight unique settings of original and familiar carols with a dash of organ accompaniment for good measure. a Sala opened its doors in Woodford Green for the first time in October to diners all buzzing with anticipation, high expectations and the names of celebrities on their lips. And the new premium social dining concept has certainly lived up to the hype. With 4000 booked in to eat at La Sala within the first month of their reservation system going live, and all Friday and Saturday evenings snapped up in record time – you’ll have to wait until at least February for a weekend table. e menu is an eclectic mix of world cuisine – garlic prawns, sushi and chicken liver parfait to start, followed by wholesome dishes such as Spatchcock chicken, seared tuna steak and BBQ pork rib sharing platter. If you have room, we hear that the baked Bramley apple and sultana crumble is unmissable comfort food – or the double chocolate and walnut brownie with hot chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream is irresistible. e dining area is light and lavishly finished – seating 140, the tables are scattered throughout the downstairs of the restaurant with the sweeping bar taking centre stage. Bar seating and an outdoor terrace provide a more casual dining setting for light bites. With entertainment seven days a week, your meal is accompanied by live solo artists, singers and other musicians from the UK and further afield. For special occasions the Laurent Perrier private dining area seats 8 and overlooks the restaurant. Downstairs the Marqués de Riscal room creates quite an impression and seats 20.
