WINTER’S HEART
S
t. Albans composer Andrew James Johnson explores the full spectrum of human emotion through his authentic piano music Long-time St. Albans resident and composerpianist Andrew James Johnson is set to release his debut classical album Winter’s Heart in November 2017. Developed over a number of years, the record took inspiration from his travels from the Californian coast and Hawaii to mainland Europe and Britain. Now a family man, Andrew has since settled in the Hertfordshire town but still makes time to travel the world and share his music: ‘St. Albans is wonderful place to live. There’s a great sense of community here and I can get some inspiration in a few minutes by walking in the tranquil surroundings of Verulamium Park.’ Born in Birmingham to a family of six, Andrew was brought up surrounded by a diverse mix of musical influences ranging from Elton John and David Bowie to classical composers Debussy and Beethoven. Later composition studies at the London College of Music led to music commissions in television, theatre and film, including campaigns for HSBC and Timotei. Now living in St. Albans with his American wife

and young children, Andrew dedicates much of his music to his family. The track ‘Taylor’s Theme’ is particularly poignant, having been written especially for his partner as she walked down the aisle on their wedding day. It was, as Andrew says, ‘a moment in time that she could treasure forever.’ With compositional techniques rooted in authenticity, Andrew’s appreciation of the great Romantic composers is reflected in the emotive tracks of his forthcoming album. The style of music is based on spontaneous feelings that arise from a connection to the natural world and its environment, with raw human emotions exposed at the heart of the listener’s experience: ‘The Winter of the title represents the stillness, clarity and purity of a natural, uninhabited environment. I’m hoping listeners will tap into their own emotional centre as they listen to the music and experience peace, calm, passion, tenderness and spirituality.’ Andrew’s music has an honesty and openness that reflect his life journey in both a meditative and truthful way, appealing to listeners of all ages. Winter’s Heart is released on Friday 17th November on streaming services and Amazon UK. Visit andrewjamesjohnson.co.uk for more information.

Christmas at Auberge du Lac Matt Edmonds, Head Chef at Auberge du Lac
I
s it acceptable to talk about Christmas yet? I hope so, as I’m bursting to tell everyone about our plans for Auberge du Lac this festive season. I’m now working on the Festive Menu and Christmas and Boxing Day Tasting Menus, and it’s really got me in the Christmas mood – I love menu planning at this time of year as there are so many traditions to follow, but so many ways in which they can be executed. Turkey is, of course, the most obvious foodrelated tradition – but simply sticking a turkey in the oven isn’t going to excite any Christmas chef or guest. There is so much you can do with a turkey and it doesn’t need to be complicated – my favourite tip is marinating the meat in maple syrup and pineapple, and this is exactly what I’ll be doing with the turkeys at Auberge du Lac this Christmas. If you plan to use my maple syrup and pineapple tip at home, I suggest you serve the turkey with a quince puree – it doesn’t always have to be about cranberries! Turkey also doesn’t always have to be the main course, I’m currently working on some delicious turkey based starters that will really get everyone in the festive mood from the get-go. At my house, we have our main Christmas celebration on Christmas Eve, and my wife has inspired me to look outside of turkey for this special meal. We usually opt for fish – bream or bass – and I cook up a fish and veggie storm for the family. I’ve really enjoyed creating new traditions with my family, so I encourage everyone to be a little braver in the kitchen this year! You’ll see

several of my favourite fish dishes on the Auberge du Lac festive menu too. The Auberge du Lac festive menu launches at the end of November, so why not come and enjoy the idyllic view on the water’s edge, whilst indulging in some of my festive favourites? Bookings for Christmas Day and Boxing Day are also now being taken, and I promise to make it a day to remember for the whole family. celebrates its Tank watch centenary in classic style
1917 – 2017
Tank Francaise Created in 1996, the new Tank Francaise comes on a bracelet with the famous brancards, dial with Roman numerals and ‘chemin de fer’. A new stainless steel version is available in small and medium, set with diamonds and powered by a quartz movement.
The Tank Américaine First introduced in 1989, it was the first of the Tank collection that offered a curved water resistant case. The new 2017 Tank Américaine watches comes in stainless steel for the first time, in three sizes: small, medium and large. The small version has a quartz movement while the two other models come with an automatic movement.
T
his year, Cartier is celebrating the 100th anniversary of their iconic Tank watch. Created by Louis Cartier in 1917, the story goes that the watchmaker modelled the design of the watch on the heavy tanks of World War I: the brancards, the elongated flanks on the sides resemble the tracks that ran either side of the first military tanks. The case, or cockpit of the vehicle, is seamlessly integrated with the strap, creating a functional and sophisticated timepiece. To celebrate its centenary, the luxury brand has produced a series of new models based on three iconic designs – the Tank Louis Cartier, the Tank Américaine and the Tank Française; elsewhere the Tank Cintrée, that inspired the Américaine, also returns in a skeletonised haute horlogerie format.

28 NOVEMBER 2017
The new models come in small and large case sizes, both with the same manual-wound Cartier Caliber 8971MC movement. Ladies can choose from pink gold and white gold, set with diamonds. Then there are two pink gold models available in small and large size, without diamonds, for men and women.
TANK FRANCIASE MM STEEL DIAMONDS £7,200
TANK CINTREE 9917 MC MECHA LEGENDS PT, £63,000
Cintrée Skeleton Cartier has also introduced two stunning pieces coming in pink gold and platinum, both with the manual winding caliber 9917MC movement. Both watches are limited to 100 pieces. The skeleton movement follows the curves of the Tank case while the transparent dial shows some of the essentials of a Tank watch: the hands and the chemin de fer. Also available in a diamond set case. The Tank has graced the wrists of some remarkable people during its first century. Louis Cartier offered one of the first models of the Tank watch in 1918 to General John Pershing - the commander of the American Expeditionary Force in Europe during the First World War – as a token of thanks. And for his final cinematic appearance, in George Fitzmaurice’s The Son of the Sheik, Rudolph Valentino demanded that he be able to wear his Tank watch in every scene. From Clark Gable, Gary Cooper and Fred Astaire to Greta Garbo, Michelle Obama and Madonna. The tank watch worn by Jackie Kennedy was sold at auction, and bought by Kim Kardashian for a staggering £300,000 at Christie’s in New York earlier this year. The purchase also broke the world record for being the most expensive Cartier Tank sold at auction. Andy Warhol famously said: “I don’t wear a Tank to tell the time. In fact, I never wind it. I wear a Tank because it’s the watch to wear.” Princess Diana was frequently photographed wearing a gold Cartier Tank Francaise, a gift from her father, John Spencer. She bought William a similar timepiece from the famed French label,

Louis Cartier
which she had engraved for one of his birthdays. After her death in 1997, William chose to keep Diana’s Cartier Tank as a memento – and in 2014, he gifted the Duchess of Cambridge with the Ballon Bleu de Cartier watch for their third wedding anniversary. Not only was the watch on its own a beautiful way to connect his beloved mother and new wife, but William also went a step further by embedding a sapphire stone into the stainless-steel style to match Kate’s engagement ring — which also belonged to Diana. Since the very beginning, it has appealed to free-spirited men and women – free to appreciate its fine, understated design, enhanced by harmonious lines; free to choose a watch for its perfectly proportioned composition rather than the status it symbolises. These visionary admirers sensed the power that emanated from this creation and formed a special bond with it. unveils its top 10 Christmas toys for 2017
T
he most famous toy store in the world has revealed its highly regarded annual prediction of the big toys for this festive season. INTERACTIVE robots and tech toys are set to dominate your children’s Christmas letters this year, according to Hamleys…. Top of the list is Tyler the playful tiger - a cute little cub which responds to petting and talking in over hundred different ways. Pet his head and his eyes might close, pet him on his muzzle and he moves. The toy is pretty much the robotic alternative to a cat but comes with a hefty price tag of £135. Suitable for age 4+ Also predicted to be a hit amongst younger kids is the Fisher Price Dance & Move Beatbox, selling for £33. The toy will teach toddlers songs and dance moves at the touch of a button. He will introduce baby to letters, colours, numbers and much more. Suitable for age 2+ Thanks to the imminent release of the latest Star Wars film, the LEGO BB-8 has climbed back to the top, giving children the chance to interact with their favourite robot – also keeping LEGO in the top ten for another year. The robot is available to buy at £85. Suitable for age 10+. Barbie is making a comeback with her Dream Horse figurine which reacts to touch and features more than 30 realistic reactions. The horse can also nod yes or no when you ask a question, play three different songs and show off with three different dances. The interactive animal alone will cost you £90. The ever-popular Nerf Gun is back with a £22 Nitro Longshot version, allowing children to design long-distance jumping challenges with the longjump ramp and obstacles. The pack includes blaster, long-jump ramp, two foam cars with plastic wheels, four obstacles, and instructions. Suitable for age 5+.
44 NOVEMBER 2017
Also set to be popular is the ultimate villain, Megazord from the Power Ranger’s film, which can be bought as an interactive figurine. The toy has eight features including: expandable wings, cannon and sword, battle and flight sounds, lights in the head and feet for enhanced realism, a light-up “Morphin Grid,” and five individual cockpits for each included ranger figure. Suitable for age 4+ The interactive Luvebella toy is manufactured by Spin Master - the company behind last year’s festive season sell-out, Hatchimals. The doll responds to affection, falls asleep, giggles and talks, and is available to purchase for £100 Hatchimals swept the boards last year and have proven their popularity again as the latest Egg Surprise proves to be a must-have toy of the season. This mysterious egg literally hatches on its own into an interactive toy. The latest version which cost £75 comes with a pair of twin Hatchimals. Each creature will have its own personality and they can also interact with each other. Kids can raise them from baby to toddler to kid and they’ll learn new things at each stage. Get A Grip, is a family game which challenges kids and adults to perform a series of increasingly difficult tasks without using their thumbs.First, players wrap their thumbs in the included hand bands so that they can’t use them. Then a player picks a card that will tell them to Draw it, Sculpt it, or Do it - all without the use of these important body parts The game is the cheapest item on the list and it might be a good way to get your kid to drop their iPhones. Victoria Kay, Head Buyer at Hamleys says: “We’ve seen a lot of tech for tech’s sake in the past few years with app extensions, but now, whether it’s a plush or a more sophisticated LEGO build, they are getting smarter in how kids can personalise and programme them.” For more information visit www.hamleys.com. 188-196 Regent Street, W1B 5BT

LONDON’S TOP FIVE MUSEUMS
L
ong gone are the days when we were reluctantly dragged to museums by our parents or teachers. Now, many of us eagerly await new exhibitions, and the result of this year’s TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards (released today) show just how popular these institutions have become. Chosen by members of the public, five spots in London have made it into the top 25 list of best-rated museums in Europe - more than any other European city - and most of them are free to enter. If you’ve not been to them before, now might be the time to find out what you’re missing. Victoria & Albert Museum (Nearest tube: South Kensington) Coming first in the UK is no small achievement: the V&A has overtaken last year’s UK winner, the British Museum, and has pushed the likes of Paris’ Musee du Louvre and Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum aside. The V&A’s free to view collection is devoted to art and design, with objects ranging from Art Deco furniture to paintings by John Constable and JMW Turner. It’s the museum’s temporary exhibitions (which do require an entry ticket) that you really need to keep an eye on. In recent years shows dedicated to the likes of fashion designer Alexander McQueen and music icon David Bowie have been hugely successful. National Gallery (Nearest tube: Charing Cross) Walking through the National Gallery is a veritable who’s who of art history, with everyone from Botticelli to Titian, Van Gogh and Monet making an appearance. Ever heard of a little painting called Sunflowers by Vincent Van Gogh? It’s just one of the many masterpieces on display as part of the permanent exhibition - open free to the public. Once you’ve done admiring the artwork, pop into the elegant National Dining Rooms for a bite to eat. It was designed by world famous architect David Collins, who also designed the celeb-magnet bar at Mayfair hotel Claridge’s, and has window views

spilling onto Trafalgar Square. British Museum (Nearest tube: Holborn) Speaking of impressive buildings, the British Museum can definitely be counted among some of the most incredible structures in London. The previous two museums on the list are largely dedicated to art, but in the British Museum it’s all about history. Don’t be fooled by the name, because there are artefacts from all over the world. Set aside several hours to learn about the ancient Egyptians or the Bronze Age in Europe. Remarkably, the museum is free - although tickets are required for temporary exhibitions. Natural History Museum (Nearest tube: South Kensington) If you haven’t visited the Natural History Museum since you were a child, now is the perfect time to go. Dippy - the giant dinosaur who filled up the main room of the building - has now been replaced by Hope, the 25.2-metre-long blue whale skeleton who hangs from the ceiling. It’s free to view the mind boggling collection of animals, fossils and skeletons so expect long entry queues at weekends. The annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition is also held here, although ticket prices apply. It’s worth combining with a trip to the neighbouring V&A both are on Exhibition Road in South Kensington. Churchill War Rooms (Nearest tube: Westminster) Located in a secret underground bunker from World War Two, the Churchill War Rooms are the best place to learn about the former British Prime Minister’s life. It was in this confined space beneath Westminster that Churchill and his senior ministers mapped out the Allied victory. Many items of memorabilia have been placed just as they would have been all those years ago. This is the only museum in the top five which doesn’t have free admission. Expect to pay £19 for adults and £9.50 for children.

fter hearing such amazing comments about the brand new Regent Seven Seas Explorer® Cruise, my wife and I were very excited to join the ship in Rhodes late October 2016. Upon embarking this stunning ship, she was not going to disappoint, the Explorer is truly elegant. We were greeted by ultra- friendly concierge staff and taken to our suite. The standard veranda suite is very spacious, and features a large 42 inch TV opposite the bed, the beds were heavenly, like giant marshmallow’s with such soft sheets and duvet, a powerful rain shower that’s big enough for 4 people, a good size separate walk in closet and a large balcony with two very comfortable chairs/ loungers that have thick padded cushions. The lunch menu by the pool is very upmarket, with a choice of daily fresh fish dishes, fabulous salads, freshly grilled prawn or beef kebabs, or there is a casual terrace restaurant with the most sumptuous buffet selection. The main pool area is beautiful, with flowing white voile curtains separating the large love chairs, and stunning oversized rattan pool beds with ultra-thick padded cushions. The Ranch Canyon Spa was one of our favourite places walking through the aromatherapy steam room and then straight into the ice room. After the spa
treatment, you can swim in the fabulous infinity pool, the first one ever at sea, which is located next to the spa at the rear of the ship. The restaurant selection and standard of cuisine is exceptional, with service that matches some of the finest restaurants around the world. In the French restaurant, Chartreuse, one of our most memorable experiences, the décor was so elegant and the French cuisine was sublime, wonderful touches was the soup course poured at the table to make the ingredients in the bowl come to life. We were also given a going home box of handmade macaroons, such a special evening. The Pacific Rim Pan Asian cuisine has authentic décor, gentle smiling staff who greeted us with a lychee martini!. Sushi, sashimi, duck spring rolls were all mouth -watering. Prime 7 steak house was by far the best steak house on land or sea that we have ever been to, tender juicy steaks, we were spoilt for choice of the amazing steak selection, succulent lamb chops with delicious sides, truly impressive, paired with the finest wines we have ever had. The entertainment was varied and professional, we really enjoyed the Irish comedian, and the local Israeli dancing group were beautiful to watch whilst we were overnight in Haifa. This ship is outstanding, we highly recommend.” – Melvyn Goldstein Managing Director of Atlantis Travel

r Ravi Jain launches new Hyaluronic Acid skin super-booster, Profhilo, at Riverbanks Wellness®. With next-level skin remodelling capabilities, and leading a new category in injectable treatments, this is no filler! Beyond plumping cheeks and filling wrinkles, cosmetic injectable treatments have evolved to actually achieve skin structural changes by stimulating the natural tissue and influencing the nature of our collagen and elastin production, orchestrating our skin’s behaviour. Moving modern developments forward, the new Profhilo treatment is based on savvy hyaluronic acid technology and has been formulated, in essence, as a bioremodeling skin enhancer, it’s in a different league entirely to ‘fillers’, more of a forefronter in the category of ‘skin super-boosters’. Cosmetic Physician and Medical Director of Riverbanks Wellness® Dr Ravi Jain, is Profhilo’s key opinion leader in the UK, he explains “It’s important to understand this is NOT a volumising dermal filler. It is also not mesotherapy. It sits between skinboosters and fillers as a Super Skin Booster in that it offers fantastic hydration but ALSO triggers collagen and elastin production, resulting in bioremodeling of the skin.” Uniquely, Profhilo combines both high molecular weight and low molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid creating a dual action that nourishes the dermal

cells and actually remodels the skin (referred to as Bioremodeling). By directly delivering unique levels of hyaluronic acid, Profhilo hydrates from the inside out while simultaneously stimulating collagen and elastin production to tighten lax skin, change skin quality and eliminate crepey-ness. The solution flows freely, integrating with subcutaneous tissue fluently, making it capable of rejuvenating areas that were previously a challenge, such as the neck, arms and forehead. There are multiple characteristics that qualify Profhilo’s revolutionary status. It is BDDE-free and treatment entails fewer injection points, limited discomfort and side-effects, less top-up sessions and longer-lasting results. “Our patients have been overwhelmed with their results from Profhilo” says Dr Jain “it’s a pretty quick treatment which achieves big improvements by accelerating the skin’s own capabilities.” At Riverbanks, Profhilo is customised for each individual, and two treatments (with a one-month interval between) are recommended for the optimal effect. Treatable areas include: • All areas of the face • The neck and décolleté • Arms Profhilo treatment takes approx. 30 minutes and results last from 4 to 6 months. Price starts from £850.

dored by the A-list (Simon Cowell, Rita Ora and Cara Delevingne are said to be serious celebrity fans), Vitamin IV Infusions are an easy, effective way of delivering vitamins, minerals and amino acids directly and immediately into your bloodstream via an IV (intravenous) drip. Due to popular demand, Courthouse Clinics is now offering Vitamin IV Infusions at a selection of clinics across the group, including Watford, courtesy of Advanced Nurse Prescriber Lucy O’Neill. Nurse Lucy is a highly qualified but very approachable medical practitioner, with 12 years’ extensive experience in the field of anti-ageing aesthetics and wellbeing. She prides herself on building a strong rapport with patients, helping them to look and feel great, from the inside out. Just as importantly, Lucy practices what she preaches: it was her own positive experience of Vitamin IV Infusions that prompted her to add them to her treatment portfolio. “I first learned
“Nurse Lucy is a highly qualified but very approachable medical practitioner, with 12 years’ extensive experience in the field of anti-ageing” about Infusions when I was feeling run down with no energy,” she explains. “I felt so much better mentally and physically after trying them, I wanted to give my patients the same benefits I experienced. And the reception so far has been brilliant. I get such great feedback from my patients afterwards – it makes my work really rewarding.” So what exactly do Vitamin IV Infusions achieve? The precise treatment effects vary depending on the patient, but in general terms they can boost wellbeing, increase energy levels, lift your mood and hydrate your body. We all know that vitamins are essential for normal growth and staying healthy, yet our bodies can’t produce all of the nutrients we need to function and thrive, which is why more than one in three people take daily vitamin supplements. What’s less well known is that only 15% of the active ingredients consumed orally actually find their way into the bloodstream. That’s not the case with Vitamin IV Infusions, which deliver their benefits straight to your cells. Courthouse Clinics offers a selection of different Vitamin IV Infusions, which allows patients to select the best combination for their personal needs. The infusion process itself is painless, and takes just 30 minutes. For optimum results, a course of Vitamin IV Infusions is recommended, followed by monthly maintenance treatments. Interested? Vitamin IV Infusions are now available at Courthouse Clinics Watford (34 The Avenue, Watford, Hertfordshire, WD17 4NS). Call 01923 242565 for more information and to book. 66 NOVEMBER 2017

THE HISTORY OF Following the recent announcement that Michael Kors has bought the luxury accessories brand for £896m - we take a look back at the history of Jimmy Choo, rising from humble origins in a cobbler workshop to becoming one of Britain’s best-known fashion brands.
2017 Bridal Collection’ Below: Mens Autumn Winter 2017 Collection; Right: Jimmy Choo
Y
ou can trace its roots back to a bespoke shoemaker, Jimmy Choo, based in the East End of London in the early 1990s. The fashion designer was born Jimmy Choo Yeang Keat in Penang, Malaysia in 1961, and using the craftsmanship he learned from his father, also a cobbler, Choo made his first pair of shoes at the age of just 11. His father wanted him to follow in his footsteps. Mr Choo recalls “When I first started, my father wouldn’t let me make a shoe. Instead, he said: “Sit and watch, sit and watch.” For months and months, I did that.” After learning from his father about the craft of shoemaking, Choo made his way to England in the early 1980s to study at the Cordwainers Technical College in Hackney, where he graduated with honours in 1983. Choosing to remain in England, Choo opened his first shop in Hackney in 1986 in an old hospital building. It didn’t take long for Choo’s reputation to build. The sexy cut, fashionable design, and exceptional Italian craftsmanship struck a chord with a sophisticated clientele, and the first collection enjoyed 68 NOVEMBER 2017
immediate success. Jimmy Choo was among the first to bring shoes and handbags to Hollywood where the red carpet proved to be the ideal runway for the brand. Soon, Choo became the darling of the celebrity world, in particular Princess Diana, who donned Choo’s footwear seemingly everywhere she went. High-profile devotees also include the Duchess of Cambridge, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and Kendal Jenner. The fictional Carrie Bradshaw in television series “Sex and the City.” famously sported Jimmy Choo shoes, boosting the brand’s status. Within two years of opening his shop, Choo’s shoes were featured in an eight-page spread in Vogue magazine. And it was his relationship with Vogue that would prove to be instrumental in the rise of the Jimmy Choo brand. Despite the rise of his popularity, Choo was still a small operation, making just 20 hand-made pairs shoes a week. But Tamara Mellon, an accessories editor at Vogue, who often hired Choo to make shoes for fashion shoots, sensed a larger market for Choo’s creations. She approached the shoemaker about partnering to create a line of ready-to-wear footwear -
“It’s a beautiful, distinctive art, and shoes are like the foundations. If the foundations aren’t right, the building won’t stand upright, and if a woman’s balance isn’t right, nothing else is.” - Jimmy Choo

JIMMY CHOO with a goal of creating a global luxury business. In 1996, both Choo and Mellon quickly grew the business, keeping the focus on creating high-end footwear, but no longer relying on the idea that every single pair had to be made by Choo himself. They contracted with Italian factories and opened their first boutique shop in Motcomb Street, London. Two years later, the company expanded to the US, securing locations in the premiere luxury shopping destinations of the world’s most prestigious cities including Madison Avenue in New York City and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, also creating a line-up of adoring Hollywood celebrities including Julia Roberts and Renee Zellweger. International expansion continued with Jimmy Choo stores opening in Avenue Montaigne in Paris, Via Condotti in Rome, Ginza in Tokyo, and prestigious shopping districts Sloane Street and Bond Street here in London. And by the turn of the century, the Choo name was a global brand, with high-end retail clients that included Harrods and Saks Fifth Avenue carrying Choo footwear. The Choo brand had also expanded to handbags and other accessories. But in the background, all was not well. Choo and Mellon were at odds about the direction of the company. In what would become one of the more fascinating rifts in the fashion industry, Choo didn’t think bigger was better. He questioned the quality of the shoes the company was making, and seemed to long for the days when he was back at his shop in Hackney making a small number of pieces of footwear for specific clients. In 2001, Choo sold his half of the company to Robert Bensoussan of Equinox Luxury Holdings for $30 million. Jimmy Choo was then put up for sale in April after struggling to retain the status it held in the early 2000’s. Both Choo and Mellon departed in 2011 when JAB Luxury bought the firm for more than £500m. Today, Jimmy Choo encompasses a complete luxury accessories brand. Women’s shoes remain the core of the product offer, alongside handbags, small leather goods, scarves, sunglasses, eyewear, belts, fragrance and men’s shoes. Jimmy Choo has a global store network encompassing more than 150 stores and is present in the most prestigious department stores worldwide. This is what makes Jimmy Choo an interesting pairing with Michael Kors, as the former is known for its sky-high stilettos and glam, crystal-embellished designs, while the latter gravitates towards down-toearth leather goods and ready-to-wear. Jimmy himself now concentrates on a very personal business, where he designs directly for clients in high-end couture. Jimmy Choo was awarded an OBE in 2002, and girls and women around the world continue to covet owning a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes! www.jimmychoo.com

LOOKWITHFORWARD TO SPRING LONDON FASHION WEEK HIGHLIGHTS We look back at the big hitters of fashion week and what these collections tell us about next spring. WORDS: Katie Wright
Here’s what happened at the ‘big five’ shows of London Fashion Week. Burberry The front row: Notably, grime artists Stormzy and Skepta were invited, which hinted at Christopher Bailey’s direction this season. The models: Kaia Gerber, daughter of Cindy Crawford, made her London catwalk debut. The look: Drawing heavily on the house’s archive, the sheepskin jackets, tartan coats and oversized knits were this time imbued with a new streetwear feel. Bailey even went as far as resurrecting the beige Nova Check print that the brand was forced to 72 NOVEMBER 2017
virtually abandon 10 years ago after it became the calling card of D list celebrities and football fans. It was a risky move, but one we can see the fash pack lapping up.
Topshop
Topshop The front row: New British Vogue editor Edward Enninful cosied up to Kate Moss and her daughter Lila Grace. The models: A diverse line-up including Adwoa Aboah, Jourdan Dunn and Joan Smalls. The look: Creative director Kate Phelan’s last collection was a jubilant send-off, a riot of party girls in 90s Sohoinspired bodycon frocks, strappy dresses, metallic skirts and big fluffy coats. There was some gorgeous daywear too - particularly the cable knit jumpers and extra-long, straight-leg suit trousers.

L
ondon Fashion Week seems to get bigger every year, with more names to know on the schedule and models to keep track of on the catwalks (and Instagram). But the same stalwart designers have remained the most influential for the last decade, so it’s to them we look to find out what’s in store for next spring that’s when the designer collections hit department stores and the high street’s catwalk-inspired creations are unveiled. If September’s shows are anything to go by, the 90s will remain very much in vogue, stripes will get a squiggly makeover, and the Queen is going to be your number one style icon.
The models: In-demand newcomers Cara Taylor and Kiki Willems walked. The look: As usual, a seemingly disparate bunch of references ruffles, handkerchief hems, chintzy prints and sugary pastels - all came from a single source, which this season Kane said was the idea of the domestic goddess. But this homemaker is hiding something, which is why her fluffy cocktail dress is worn with black latex gloves and her shoes come with kitchen mop fringing. The master of stylish subversion triumphed again.
Erdem
House of Holland The front row: Singer Ella Eyre, Little Mix’s Leigh-Anne Pinnock and designer Henry Holland’s BFF Nicola Roberts of Girls Aloud fame were in attendance. The models: A refreshingly diverse roster included Sudanese-born Duckie Thot and American Adesuwa Aighewi. The look: In a word, stripes. Well, waves, really. These psychedelic squiggles, Holland’s ode to surf culture, emblazoned everything from slip dresses to midi skirts to sweatshirts. The tinsel pool slides and pirate hats that accompanied almost every look may not be to everyone’s taste, but the undulating stripes were a real winner.
All images courtesy of PA Photo/Handout
The front row: Erdem superfan Alexa Chung, actress Jenna Coleman and Brit model Erin O’Connor. The models: Another designer who favours interesting newcomers, Erdem Moralioglu chose Cara Taylor to close the show. The look: Imagining a 30-something Queen transported to a New York jazz club (inspired by time spent in the royal archives), Moralioglu sent out a slew of stunningly opulent satin gowns and frock coats. A 50s silhouette ruled throughout - on full skirts or pencil skirts - and there was lots of sequin and crystal embellishment alongside the designer’s trademark florals.

I recommend using a broad spectrum sunscreen such as Environ RAD SPF 15 which we stock in salon. Aloe Vera gel may also help.” Vein Away brand ambassador Dr Brian Newman says, “I have worked over 20 years developing treatments for spider veins. Vein Away system adds a new perspective in virtually painless, minimally invasive therapy for small blood vessels and skin blemishes. I can add my support to the many practitioners who are getting excellent results with the new Vein Away patented technology.”
Painlessly Eliminate Thread and Spider Veins ‘Thread’ and ‘spider’ veins are tiny blood vessels which form fine red/purple wiggly lines underneath the skin’s surface. These visible veins can be found in both men and women all over the body but are most common on the face and legs. Micro-sclerotherapy and laser devices have been traditionally used to treat the condition, however these methods can prove painful, are ineffective at targeting finer veins and can potentially cause scarring. Sam explains “Vein Away treatments painlessly utilise an ultra fine filament to ensure accurate application so the surrounding skin and tissue is protected. Only the targeted area is diminished and even the finest veins can be eliminated. The results are visible straight away, so my clients know for sure it’s worked.” To find out more or to book a consultation with one of our specialist Vein Away therapists
call 01582 280078. For long-lasting results several sessions may be required depending on your individual circumstance. Vein Away treatments are most effective on the facial area; some thread veins on the body may not be treatable.
Skin Tag, Milia and Cherry Angioma Removal Many people suffer with: • skin tags (small flesh coloured growths) • milia (small white cysts/bumps underneath the skin) • cherry angiomas (small red moles). Whilst these skin lesions are mostly harmless, they can be unsightly and many clients prefer to remove them. Vein Away treats skin lesions in a matter of minutes providing precise, effective and permanent results. Following treatment the lesions drop off naturally, usually within 2 weeks. “Skin lesions are such small imperfections but they can really affect someone’s confidence,” explains Sam. “My clients find it really reassuring that Vein Away provides such a reliable, quick and fuss-free procedure”
Vein Away Safely and Permanently Removes Skin Lesions If you’re seeking permanent thread vein or skin lesion removal, Vein Away offers a real and safe solution without the need for surgery. The advanced technology ensures treatments are quick, easy and virtually painless. If you are considering Vein Away treatments why not call and book a complimentary consultation? How to style yourself through your pre-Christmas social diary
T
he invitations have started rolling in and the diary is getting packed out for pre-Christmas dinners, drinks and events. Does this fill you with dread at the thought of what to wear to every social event? Fear not, I am here to help with my easy guide to party dressing...but beware it does involve ALOT of sparkle! Sequins are the easy option to dress up something that already exists in your wardrobe. If you can’t afford a new outfit, but want something that makes you sparkle but not looking like a Christmas tree, then try some sequins this season. It’s a way to look glam without putting too much effort in, as the sequins are doing all the work for you. You can’t over do the sequins this season, head-to-toe is the way to go! Sparkle is an essential element of party dressing, but it can be more chic to be selective. Accessories pack a stylish punch, so invest in a fabulous sequin clutch bag or statement heel’s for a more subtle touch of shimmer. Velvet has been bubbling under for a few seasons but it is no longer underground and the high street is awash with it. Alot of the items can be worn as daytime pieces too, so once worn for your evening Christmas parties then ensure that it keeps being worn. What appeals most is jackets, boots or dresses that don’t cost alot of money but bring any outfit upto date. Velvet is the perfect festive fabric and a Christmas dinner party is the perfect excuse to invest in a velvet dress in an unexpected colour. But go creative and look for embroidered or embellished details as these look more expensive, more fashionable and will have more longevity. Shoes and bags in velvet are a stylish addition to any

evening look, try them in this season’s hottest colour midnight navy. Ruffles were on trend throughout Summer so it was inevitable that the trend as going to continue into Autumn/Winter. The bolder the ruffle the better! Whether they are framing your neckline, accentuating the hips or falling off the shoulder, they are definitely a dramatic statement detail. Plus you don’t need too many accessories because the ruffles do all the talking! There are lots of folds and flounces, including ties at the neck, ruffles on sleeves and frills on dress hems. Think different textures, fabrics, prints and darker colours for the Party season. Nina Whitehead is a personal stylist based in Hertfordshire and can be found blogging at edits-styling.com.

MOVEMBER MAN TALK COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE
M
ake time for man talk! That’s the advice being given to men as part of the national Movember campaign – the month that spotlights men’s
health issues. A Movember survey showed that while 70% of men say their friends could rely on them for support, only 48% say that they would rely on their friends! In other words men are happy to listen to other people’s problems but not so happy to talk about their own. Two of the biggest ‘men only’ killers are prostate and testicular cancer but both are very treatable if diagnosed early. Mr Jacques Roux a Consultant Urologist at Spire Harpenden Hospital said: “The key to successful treatment is down to men facing up to the fact that they might have a problem and seeking medical help as soon as possible. “It is well known that men tend to keep things bottled up when it comes to medical issues but that really is the worst thing they can do. Growing a moustache in support of Movember is great but it’s when the talking starts that we know we are getting somewhere.” Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men with over 41,000 new cases diagnosed in the UK every year, claiming approximately 10,500 lives while around 2,300
78 NOVEMBER 2017
cases of testicular cancer are diagnosed annually. Men over 50 years of age are most likely to develop prostate cancer whereas it is men aged from 25 to 49 who are most at risk from testicular cancer. Mr Roux added: “Early prostate cancer may have no symptoms so don’t wait for them to appear. If you are 50 years old you should be getting yourself checked. That age drops to 45 if you are black or have a father or brother who has had prostate cancer. “It’s a simple examination that could be followed by a blood test - there is no need to be frightened or embarrassed.” Prostate Cancer UK figures show that one in four black men will get prostate cancer at some point in their lives whereas the number of other men is one in eight. Symptoms for testicular cancer include swelling or a lump in a testicle, which is usually painless but can become painful as it increases in size or a dull ache or pain, or heaviness in the scrotum. “Once again men seem to find it difficult to discuss this with others but swift action really can save lives. Don’t wait until it becomes painful, act as soon as you discover a lump, it really can mean the difference between successful and nonsuccessful treatment,” said Mr Roux. www.spireharpenden.com

LET THERE BE LIGHT! British furniture designer and manufacturer Blackbird London have launched their debut furniture collection, Let There Be Light, in-store and online. The collection comprising of handcrafted tables, mirrors, lighting and accessories, was designed by Founder & Creative Director, Maggie Calmels and her partner Louis, taking inspiration from the cosmos and solar system. Each piece of furniture is handmade in their central London workshop, where they have devised a range of metal textures specifically for the Let There Be Light collection including the popular ‘crater’ finish which evokes the pitted surface of the moon and the ‘ripple’ texture which represents the sand dunes on Mars. To complete each item, Blackbird London hand-apply metallic finishes in old gold, antique silver, bronze and white bronze to represent the colours of the cosmos. All pieces from the Let There Be Light range can be found at Blackbird London’s boutique showroom in Battersea, or online at www.blackbird-london.com.

The brief for the new look was to create something refined and striking, but which firmly lets the fabulous products do the talking. Having launched MiaFleur in October 2012, selling upcycled vintage furniture, the product range has evolved dramatically since then and the brand has evolved far beyond the original name. www.audenza.com 84 NOVEMBER 2017

Home Owners Need to be Wary of “Quick-Fit Fitters”
S
ometimes UK homeowners expectations of delivery for bespoke replacement double glazed windows and/or replacement doors are not very realistic, as some don’t appreciate how much work is involved. Put simply, tailor made windows and doors are just that, made to measure products in terms of design, colour and size. Fenestration products not designed, measured, fabricated or installed correctly can lead to unwanted long term aggravation & disappointment for property owners. To highlight this, if a double glazing supplier has a surveyor, fabricator and/or fitters sitting round waiting on your order, it would be sensible to ask why? There are lots of really decent double glazing installers in the UK, many of whom work primarily on recommendation. These sorts of firms are likely to be booked up many weeks in advance, because as a general rule customers would rather wait and have their replacement windows or doors measured right, manufactured right and installed properly, than have all the hassle caused when one or more of these operations is rushed to the detriment of a decent job. It is better to have really good quality, well-
86 NOVEMBER 2017
made windows and doors which are fitted a couple of weeks late, rather than to have them poorly designed, and/or made defectively and/or fitted in too much of a hurry. It is easy to understand why customers are tempted to rush things along wanting their project completed as fast as possible, or customers who get pressurized by their builder or developer to buy windows and doors from a firm that their builder “recommends” that will deliver the products when the builder wants. Builders are notorious for wanting to fit new windows and doors as quickly as possible so they can move on to their next building project! Builders can therefore be keen to suggest buying windows and door products where they can get them fast, and not necessary the products that will be the best investment for the property owner, who is after all the customer, so should be the person specifying which windows and doors they require, and fitted by whom they trust to do a good job that will leave them with well installed products. To assist householders and give them greater peace of mind when appointing an installation company, consumer champions Which? established
“Consumer champions Which? established an endorsement scheme labelled ‘Which? Trusted Traders’”
an endorsement scheme labelled ‘Which? Trusted Traders’. In 2014 the region’s largest independent double glazing manufacturers and installers, Hazlemere Window Company, joined this prestigious scheme after they passed an intense assessment process, proving that they met the strict requirements set out by Which? and satisfy the high standards they expect of a local and reliable trader. It demonstrates to customers that those who achieve Which Trusted Trader status have proven themselves as having been trustworthy up to that point, and that they are firmly committed to offering complete fairness and transparency at all times. Hazlemere Windows have since passed two further Which? Trusted Traders inspections, so remain as Which? approved suppliers to this day. To undertake a replacement window project properly, a professional surveyor should take careful accurate measurements (so they end up fitting properly), then raw materials have to be ordered (any coloured products are likely to be on a longer lead time) along with sealed units from the glass suppliers to ensure these will fit into the frames that are being specially made. Next, the products then need to be scheduled for production, as most double glazing manufacturers will not have skilled workers standing round. Once the products have been fabricated the installations department will need to confirm up the provisional date they will have hopefully pencilled in with you when you placed your order. Understanding the above process for bespoke fenestration products should set off alarm bells if a double glazing installer says they can supply and fit within a few weeks. Ask yourself, why have they not got a waiting list? It is wise to be wary of any double glazing company “promising” a quick
delivery in order to get you to sign up with them, as the last thing you want is to regret handing over a large deposit to the wrong company for the sake of a few weeks wait. So beware the quick fit window or door fitter! The danger of paying over a deposit is that once a customer has paid a supplier, they are then really stuck with that supplier (unless prepared to lose the deposit) however long that supplier then takes to supply and fit the products. Before ordering from any double glazing company, ensure a) you’ve done enough research so you can be confident your chosen partner will still be around in 10 years’ time!, b) you’ve read recent satisfactory customer reviews, c) you’ve seen the products first hand they will be supplying so you know for certain what to expect, and d) that they are Which Trusted Traders. If you’d like any free help or expert advice on a no obligation basis from independent double glazing manufacturers and installers Hazlemere Window Company Ltd on any double glazing project you are considering, contact them on 01727 238658 or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk

After all, this is the place where we start and finish our day. We spend a third of our lives in bed so it deserves special attention. champagne hues, subtle pinks, purples and plums. Combine textures such as satin, velvet and faux fur, key to creating a luxurious, romantic feel. For a contemporary vibe, dress a bed with white bed linen and a velvet throw, and add an eclectic mix of cushions. In any style of bedroom, the bed should always take centre stage. For a more feminine interpretation, add art deco-style mirrored furniture and on-trend metallic accents, lamps and accessories.” Tip: For smaller rooms, avoid heavy patterns and dark colours, as they’ll look too busy, while at the other end of the scale, larger rooms shouldn’t be too minimalist, as they can look cold.
Hotel style “A boutique hotel-style bedroom is a hugely popular choice and this crisp, smart look appeals particularly to couples who want a style that suits both their tastes, and is neither overtly feminine nor macho,” says Samantha. “Colour is key in creating a haven of rest, so look at palettes you’re both drawn to. If you can’t agree on which shade, opt for something pale - like a soft grey or off-white hue - that provides a neutral backdrop. Enhance the mood and ambience with carefully considered lighting, such as task lighting for bedtime reading on either side of the bed. We offer Zip & Link beds, (£1,722 for Zip & Link mattress; £2,289 for Zip & Link mattress and bed set), ideal for couples who have different preferences. This type of bed is made up of two mattresses with different comfort levels, which can be used together or separated into two singles.”
Tip: Dare to go for a paler carpet, as this is normally a ‘low-traffic’ area and hopefully, where people don’t wear shoes. Neutrals or greys will work with most schemes, and carpet is warmer underfoot.
Boudoir on a budget “Autumn’s the perfect time to put a stylish twist on your bedroom’s design. For a simple and easy way to rejuvenate the look of your space, consider changing a headboard,” suggests Samantha. “A tall, winged headboard gives a room the ‘wow’ factor and completely transforms its aesthetic into something sophisticated and special. Or opt for a simple metal or wooden one, if you don’t want the bed to dominate. Dress a bed with throws and cushions in a new colour scheme - deep blues, teal and indigo are in fashion. This colour could be used to paint a feature wall behind the bed, or take the shade over the walls and ceiling for a cosy, cosseting feel. Even a basic makeover can make a difference. Focus on decluttering and tidying surfaces - too many visual distractions can make it hard to relax and sleep. Change bedside lamps or just replace drawer handles and curtain ties with more decorative items. All these can make a surprising difference to the room’s atmosphere and appeal, and all for a minimal cost.” Accessorise your bed with Furniture Village’s Velour Cushions, £39 each, and a Cera Mustard Table Lamp, £119. Tip: If you’re space-starved, consider fitted furniture, which can create up to three times more storage space than freestanding pieces, as it can be tailored to precisely fit the room. CHOOSING A NEW SOFA WORDS: GABRIELLE FAGAN
B
uying a new settee can be stressful. Three experts share their top tips and trends to plump for. Over the course of a sofa’s life (which lasts, on average, 11 years) it will witness 1,236 arguments, 2,105 kissing couples, 3,135 films watched by families, and overhear 2,631 phone conversations, according to new research for Furniture Village. So, it’s all the more important then, to choose a sofa that doesn’t just look good and fit in, but can withstand all that activity and emotion. Experts reveal their buying secrets to help you choose the best seat in the house...
‘Green and orange are the hottest sofa colours right now’ “We’re always keeping abreast of trends and this year, in Italy, at Salone del Mobile - which showcases the latest in furniture and design from around the world - we saw two colours dominate - burnt orange 96 NOVEMBER 2017
and forest green,” says Alison Hill, creative director at DFS. Forest green reflects our desire to bring the ‘outside in’ and orange is a complementary colour to green. Curved-back ‘cocooning’ furniture is increasingly popular, too. We’ve really seen craftsmanship trending in recent years - highlighted in detail on upholstery and frames. Raising furniture forms on plinths - another popular look - provides a sense of continuous space in a room, and is an advantage if you’re constrained for space. All cushions are not created equal - some people like a firm and supportive feel, while others want something soft and squishy to sink into. We have fibre filling for a soft feel; a foam core for balanced softness, and support and foam for a supportive, slightly springy feel. An extra set of loose covers are available to buy with our sofas, too.” Alison’s favourite sofa... “The Fliss is country-style meets urban living, with its sweeping curved arms and stunning turned legs. I love the pink and plum colour combination.”

sofa will work wonders. A large corner unit may be a good option to consider, as this offers flexible seating solutions, as well as adding structure to open-plan spaces. If you’re working with a more compact room, consider a raised sofa with smaller proportions and slender tapered legs, which will help create the illusion of space and light.” Malcolm’s favourite sofa... “The Nicoletti Movimento Recliner Corner Chaise is my top pick, as its deep, luxurious foamfilled seats and optional touch sensitive power recliner function make this a stylish and superbly comfortable choice,” says Malcolm.
‘Big families should opt for a statement sofa’ “A sofa’s one of the most used and best-loved pieces of furniture in our home,” says Malcolm Walker, director of product at Furniture Village. “Far from just being a place to sit, it can be the centre of many pivotal moments in family life whether it’s arguments and the subsequent making up, or a power nap after a long day. But the sheer amount of time that we spend on a sofa, along with the number of activities that we do while lounging on it can mean it needs to stand up to a lot of wear and tear - particularly if you have children. As the seasons shift from summer to autumn, we have seen the re-emergence of earthy hues and tactile finishes. Worn leathers and raw materials pair together to create a rustic decor, perfect for those looking to achieve a sense of warmth and comfort,” says Malcolm. Velvet continues to enjoy a renaissance around this time of year, with jewel tones and brass finishes accompanying this textile, to introduce a sense of sophisticated luxury to any scheme. The two key concepts to take into account when choosing a sofa are the space you are working with and your own personal style. A sofa will naturally become the focal point in any space, so ensuring that it captures the look you want is essential,” says Malcolm. If your home caters for a big family, then a statement

‘Check the basics’
“Check a room is not only large enough for the size of the sofa, but also that its proportions are right”
“We’re fans of sofas that are big enough to lounge around on, look good and most importantly are super-comfy,” says Charlie Marshall, founder of Loaf. “People are becoming more adventurous with colour in their homes, as sites like Pinterest are providing people with inspiration, making it easier for them to get bolder colours right. Our new fabric collection for 2018 is full of vibrant hues, including Carnival (a red/pink coral hue), Maize Yellow, Clean Green and Deep Blue Lido, in velvets and linens. We recently updated our Souffle Sofa as a modular design, and each unit can be customised in a different fabric and colour for a statement look, or in one fabric for a classic look.” Check a sofa has a solid beech frame, held together with screws and dowels, rather than glued and stapled chipboard versions, which aren’t as durable and break easily If you have your very own team of ‘stain spreaders’ (young children and pets) removable covers are a good choice, as they can be easily whipped off for cleaning,” advises Charlie. Always measure up before buying. Check a room is not only large enough for the size of the sofa, but also that its proportions are right. High-back sofas can be overpowering in a smaller room with a low ceiling. Fitting a new sofa through narrow doorways can be tricky - ask for access advice - bolt-on arms can be a great solution.” Charlie’s favourite sofa... “The Pudding Sofa is a fresh take on a classic design and it has a super-deep comfy seat. It looks great in our classic linens and neutral fabrics, as much as it does in our bolder choices, such as Burnt Orange velvet.”

Get your mattress and mornings sorted
I
n our hectic and modern 24/7 lifestyle, it seems that we are all working later into the evening, sleeping less and waking up tired in the weekday mornings. Then trying to catch up on sleep with weekend lie-ins. 4 out of 10 Brits are waking up tired 6 days a week, with 1 in 7 feeling groggy every single morning! Warren Evans and their sleep expert, Dave Gibson, founder of thesleepsite.co.uk, believe that the root cause of our sleep problems are due to our mattress and morning routine. Dave says, “We know that if we’re stressed in the evening then having a bath, reading a book, stopping using technology and doing meditation and relaxation techniques are the things to help calm us. However, if we can set up our mornings with a regular, relaxing and healthy start, it will lead to a good sleep routine in the evening. Equally, if you wake up during the night and it’s not stress or the toilet, the obvious thing to check is your mattress, which normally needs changing every 6 to 8 years.
100 NOVEMBER 2017
Here are Dave’s top 10 tips to help you create a healthy morning routine to set your body clock up with a solid foundation to get to sleep in the evening…
“Exercising outdoors in the morning is the perfect way to start the day, as it improves both your quality and quantity of sleep”
1) Set your alarm for the same time 7 days a week Creating this routine will mean, eventually, your natural body clock will set to wake at the same time every day. 2) Sleep in cycles not hours We now know that we sleep in 90-minute cycles. Therefore, we naturally have breaks in our sleep at 6 hours, 7 ½ hours, and 9 hours. Set your alarm up specifically after these hours for the optimum time to wake up. 3) Get out of bed straight away! Don’t use the snooze button because it confuses the brain, as we are using the same stimulus to initiate different responses (snooze/wake up). 4) Try to wake up without an alarm Waking up without the use of an alarm is ‘best practice’ as far as ‘sleep hygiene’ is concerned. 5) Get some sunlight first thing, especially in the darker days Getting sunlight in the morning makes it easier to get to sleep at night, as is strengthens our circadian rhythm. 6) Eat a good breakfast Ideally, we should have breakfast within 30 minutes of waking up. 7) Drink water, not coffee or tea with your breakfast We lose water over night through sweat and therefore wake up dehydrated. Water is by far the best drink to have first thing, as it instantly hydrates you. Save your cup of coffee or tea for later in the morning to give you a boost 8) Get outside and exercise in the morning Exercise is the perfect way start to the day, as it improves your sleep quality and quantity, boosts your daily intake of sunlight and keeps you fit at the same time! 9) Keep technology out of the bedroom, at least overnight All sleep specialists will advise to use the bedroom only for sleep and sex, especially for those struggling to get to sleep.
It’s like sleeping on air Warren Evans’ bestseller, the Natural Air 3000, currently on sale, is a pocket-sprung medium to firm feel. This popular mattress is a fantastic example of a well-made and good quality mattress. Handcrafted using a blend of lambswool, silk, cashmere fibres and topped with a luxurious 100% Egyptian cotton cover for added breathability, the Natural Air 3000 is the perfect choice for allergy sufferers. The deep pocket springs react to the shape and movement of your body throughout your sleep, minimising roll and giving perfect support where it’s needed. This premium level of support and comfort makes it ideal for back and joint pain sufferers. Rated the highest UK mattress shop by Which? Members’ “Best Mattress Retailers” Survey 2017, Warren Evans expert advisers will help you find the right mattress for you. If you want to sleep your way to happiness, then now is the perfect time to invest in a new mattress in the Warren Evans Autumn Sale. 10) Use a short morning meditation to set up each day A short 10-minute meditation session in the morning sets you up for the day, helping you to cope with the pressures ahead by centering you. Follow these simple steps to achieve sleep success every day. NOVEMBER 2017 101

n an exclusive partnership with Versace Home, the global symbol of opulence, AYKON London One brings you the ultimate in branded living experiences. Versace Tower is about to light up the multibillion pound Nine Elms regeneration zone, in the shape of a designer piece of property for those who love a label. Thanks to a collaboration with Italian fashion house Versace, 50-storey Aykon London One will be the glitziest tower on the block. The £600million tower, dubbed the ‘Jenga tower’ because of its appearance, is due to open in 2020. A studio can be bought for £747,000, with onebedroom apartments from £1,116,000, and twobedroom flats from £1,877,000. As the floors start to rise, so do the prices. A top-floor duplex would set you back £13 million. Choose from studios to one, two and three bedroom arrangements, finished to the highest standards, with special ‘winter gardens’, offering stunning panoramic views of the city. Even the

chandeliers in the residents’ lounge are gold-plated filigree, while “V” for Versace Home is in marble patterns inlaid into the walnut floors at the entrance to each apartment. For their money, buyers certainly get plenty of Versace branding in their homes. The style house’s trademark Greek key decorates splashbacks, kitchen islands and mirrors in the white marble bathrooms, while master bedrooms are decorated with lavish amounts of pale gold-and-cream Versace wallpaper. Residents will enjoy in-house dining, a concierge, a cinema, a state-of-the-art gymnasium plus a luxury swimming pool and spa - all tricked up in Versace’s trademark maximal style of opulent colours and fabrics. Even the children’s playroom has a patchwork Versace carpet in primary colours, plus a double-height yellow slide and designer chairs. Each of the building’s outdoor spaces will be unique, with its own focal sculptures, water features and landscaping aesthetic, all complemented by stylish furniture and specialist lighting. Nine Elms is already home to the New Covent Garden Market, the brand-new US Embassy and Battersea Power Station, a cherished feature of the London skyline. It’s also blessed with almost two miles of Thames river frontage, and will be lined with cafés, bars, restaurants, cultural attractions and public space as part of the planned regeneration. Since construction work on “Versace Tower” began in August, 170 of its 360 homes have sold. Unsurprisingly, many overseas buyers have taken the bait, from the Gulf States, Hong Kong, Russia, Iran and Pakistan. Developers have come under fire for selling highly priced flats at Nine Elms to overseas buyers before addressing the British market. www.aykonlondonone.com

EMPTY NESTING? – ITS TIME FOR A MOVE
S
o the last of your offspring has now finally moved out – and reluctantly you have taken down the bunting. Your current home is definitely surplus to requirements – more to dust and heat, and that second floor barely gets visited now the au pair is no longer required – but you are certainly not ready for the ‘flat’ move. Sounds familiar? Well, here is the perfect – and I mean, the perfect – solution... A newly constructed, beautifully and luxuriously appointed bungalow, quietly positioned in a prime location just a short stroll to Battlers Green Farm Shopping Village, and easy access to the local cafes, shops and Thameslink station at Radlett. For those of you who are already dismissing the idea because ‘I would not want a bedroom on the ground floor’ – well, please do not worry, because this outstanding and truly magnificent property has provided an alternative; boasting two master bedroom suites - you can chose either the ground floor with bespoke ensuite dressing room and luxury bathroom, or the first floor, with walk-thru dressing room leading to spacious ensuite shower room, and a small storage room for your suitcases and winter coats! Both, by the way, are fitted with full ranges of stunning wardrobes and drawers by
Neatsmith, and the bathrooms are kitted out by Porcelanosa. Now that we’ve whetted your appetite with the flexibility of living choices mentioned so far, you may wish to investigate the host of other redeeming features that this cleverly designed property has to offer. Well firstly, it has attained the name ‘Skyhall’ due to the double height atrium style hallway with skylight, enhanced by the supersized LED ‘golf ball’ chandelier suspended from on high. Then there is the superbly appointed spectacular reception room that spans the entire width of the rear of the property, and will easily contain all your large sofas and coffee tables, not to mention your extending dining table with perhaps a dozen chairs – so no need to downsize here, or cease your grand entertaining – just in case you were worried! However, wouldn’t it be lovely to have a spanking new bespoke fully fitted Cococucine kitchen/breakfast room? Just think, the latest high gloss units in soft grey and contrasting wood, offset by beautiful stone work surfaces, with two double ovens and warming drawers, as well as all the other new Siemens and Miele appliances, and finally, that central island with induction hob that you always fancied?
So you’ve got the choice of a ground or first floor luxury bedroom suite, a brand new designer fully fitted kitchen with utility leading off, a jaw dropping double width reception room with two sets of French doors and window to the rear – but is this going to be enough, I hear you question. Probably not, so to be on the safe side, the sensibly planned layout also provides a very well proportioned third bedroom/TV room/Study to the front of the ground floor, as well as a deep storage cupboard and a large cloakroom/shower room, both of which are located off the hallway. Now you have the best of all worlds. Not the flat move. Strictly speaking, not a one level bungalow – but a brand new, spacious and airy, newly constructed property, complete with underfoot heating, air conditioning, luxury carpets, comprehensive security, and a wealth of stateof-the-art lifestyle enhancing audio, media, and communication systems. Oh, and did I mention this exquisite property is detached, has forecourt parking for several vehicles, and a beautifully landscaped, 120’ south facing and secluded rear garden? No? Well I reckon that’s clinched it. Price £1,950,000
