hree intrepid young men from local estate agent Butler & Stag, based in Theydon Bois, have returned victorious from their heroic charity challenge. They successfully climbed the three highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales ‘all in one go’ over 24 hours. Neil Leahy, Michael Woolley and Tyler Dunkin tested themselves against rugged terrain and challenging weather so that children using Theydon Bois playground can have a safer and more secure future with new, updated equipment. Victory was achieved over the last weekend in October completing their three peaks challenge in 13 hours and 13 minutes of climbing plus ten hours of time allotted for travelling. The Playground at Theydon Appeal has already benefitted by ÂŁ4,000+ as fundraising gained space prior to the climb. It’s still hoped the target of ÂŁ10,000 will be reached as more people appreciate the personal sacrifices that went into making the conquest a success. Insurance executive Natasha Sadler explains how to protect yourself financially before the builders start work.
G
o on, admit it, you love those home renovation television programmes. Grand Designs, Ugly House to Lovely House, DIY SOS, the list goes on and on. We delight in seeing what can be done to improve the appearance of our homes, and adding space and enhancing the features of your house will increase its value. However it’s worth bearing in mind that going about home improvements in the wrong way could invalidate your home insurance. So it’s important to know what insurance protection you – and your builder – need to have in place. Before you start, make sure you are honest and upfront with your insurer or broker about exactly what work you are planning to do. Any building work increases the risk you present to an insurer, so they need to plan for things that may happen to your property. Common sense dictates that the likelihood of accidents happening will increase while the work is going on, so think about increasing your accidental damage cover. ere is also the added security risk that comes from having builders, plumbers, electricians etc going in and out of your building. Moving out while the building work is going on? Check your policy, as if you leave your home vacant for more than the time stipulated in your cover policy then the insurance could be invalid (this also applies if you are going on holiday for longer periods of time). ink about adding legal cover to your policy. House renovations are expensive and there are

numerous instances of arguments between clients and architects, or builders and other contractors, not to mention the worst case scenario of a building firm going out of business before the work is completed. Once finished, the work on your property may well require you to increase your existing cover levels as the updated arrangement of space, new kitchen, bathrooms or additional rooms will almost certainly have added value to your home. What about your builder? If one of their employees falls off a ladder then who is responsible? At the very least your builder should have public liability insurance which covers injury to a third party (for example a member of the public is hit by a falling roof tile) and damage to a third party property, such as your new bathroom units being damaged by the plumber when they are installing new pipework. A reputable builder will also have employer’s liability insurance, which protects their employees when working on the job. And they should also have contractors’ all-risk cover, which covers work done by the builder such as the new extension being accidentally destroyed, or before you have had a chance to update your policy to cover it. 800TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CHARTER OF THE FOREST

onday 6 November is an important day for forests in the UK as it marks the 800th Anniversary of the Charter of the Forest. e Forest Charter, is considered by historians as having as much importance as Magna Carta, ‘e Great Charter’ which celebrated its 800th Anniversary in 1215. e Forest Charter is concerned with the rights of the commoners and freemen of England. is in turn really set the foundations in place which enabled the City of London Corporation to save Epping Forest from illegal inclosure with the Epping Forest Act 1878. For more information on the Forest Charter visit www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/eppingforest. Staff at Epping Forest will be celebrating the anniversary of the Forest Charter as well as the history of the Forest by participating in the Lord Mayor’s Show on 11 November. It was launched in the same year as the Magna Carta in 1215, making this the 802nd year of the traditional procession. Why not take a trip into the City of London to cheer on your favourite, local Forest. It’s a great day out for all the family, culminating in a grand firework display over e ames later in the evening. Q: What are the benefits of Braeside and Normanhurst taking children from 2½ to 16? A: With many of our children pupils at the schools since the age of 2 or 3, we can provide continuity of education in familiar surroundings by teachers who know then well. e progression from each stage to the next is well-supported to ensure that the pupils’ education is continually enhanced. Q: What happens at 11+ for pupils who join Braeside and Normanhurst from outside? A: Many of the children who join us in Year 7 at Braeside and Normanhurst come from other local state or independent schools. We have joint entrance exams in January and March, and I interview each family before offering places. e induction process is very strong to minimise what can be a daunting experience, and our existing children who move up to Year 7 are friendly and accommodating. Both schools are extremely successful at GCSE. At Braeside this year, 90% of grades achieved were at A* to C, or at the new grade 4 and above in English and Maths. 47% of grades were at A* or A, with 31% of English and Maths grades at the new grades 7, 8 or 9. At Normanhurst 92% of grades achieved were at A* to C, or at grade 4 and above in English and Maths. Pupils achieved 100% A* to C grades in subjects such as Art, Graphics, History, Drama, IT, RS, English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. n

In 1959, with nothing but a dream in his heart and an $800 family loan in his pocket, Berry Gordy left his job on a car production line and set about building his own factory. A factory for music. Where the artists would choose the songs, and the hits would flow off the line like Cadillacs.
Stevie Won nder, Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye, that factory invented the sound of young America, made its musicians into stars, and produced countless Number One hits worldwide. AUDLEY END HOUSE AND GARDENS
A
udley End was one of the greatest houses of early 17th-century England. In about 1605–14 omas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk, took an earlier house created by his grandfather Lord Audley on the site of Walden Abbey, and rebuilt it on the scale of a royal palace. Robert Adam transformed this house for Sir John Griffin Griffin in the 1760s, while Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown remodelled the grounds, to create one of England's finest landscape gardens. Audley End was the most ambitious house of its period in England. In form and scale it was a royal palace in all but name, intended to accommodate royal visitors on their progresses around the country (James I visited twice in 1614). It had symmetrically arranged state apartments for the king and queen occupying the first floor of the inner court and linked by a long gallery. Events this Autumn at Audley End House Audley End has a busy programme of events throughout the year, which are perfect for a family day out. Over the Bank Holiday weekends, we hold a number of larger historic events with lots of fun and entertainment. OWIE, which hit our screens five years ago now, has filmed in some of Essex’ most iconic venues and locations such as Hylands House in the City of Chelmsford, Orsett Hall near urrock, Colchester Zoo, Lifehouse Spa, Brentwood, Chingford and one of our visitor’s favourite destinations, Leigh-on-Sea (to name a few), and has certainly increased footfall and revenue for these much loved destinations and venues over the years. Gently rolling countryside, beautiful sandy beaches stretching for miles (350 to be exact), picturesque, bustling towns and villages, a City(!) and unique locations, are not the normal platitudes some people might associate with Essex - but they’re true! Many Essex celebrities (such as Jamie Oliver) have long sung the praises of the county, which is blessed with the second longest coastline of any UK county, and the longest pleasure pier in the World at Southend. Many other celebrity chefs are ambassadors for Essex’s Maldon Sea Salt, fresh ‘catch’ and our native Maldon and Mersea oysters because of their freshness and culinary delight. And of course, Wilkin’s of Tiptree, famous jam makers and by Appointment to her Majesty, have established themselves as a well-known and loved Brand in Essex, and are World renowned. Mersea Island is the most easterly isle in the UK (Essex actually has 35 islands in all), and attracts visitors from all over the world because of its renowned seafood and its amazing coastline. At West Mersea, mud flats, marshland and
excellent conditions for sailing, fishing and crabbing(!), whilst at East Mersea, a jagged coastline, remote sandy and pebble beaches and Cudmore Grove Country Park, a haven for wildlife, walkers and families. You can also take a ferry from here over to Brightlingsea in the summer months too. At the other end of the scale, Frinton-on-Sea, the Albion Beach at Walton-on-Naze and Martello Bay at Clacton-on-Sea provide visitors with safe bathing, amazing sandy beaches and general seaside fun on Clacton and Walton Piers. In August, Clacton hosts the only Air Show in East Anglia, now in its 26th year and still wooing around 25,000 visitors with its air displays (and night flying on the evening of 24th too). n

Chelmsford, (now a City and the ‘county town’), has developed a fabulous Town Centre - pedestrianised, but offering easy access via bus and train directly into its heart. e City has emerged as the ‘go to place’ for shopping since the new Bond Street shopping mall was opened just before Christmas 2016, featuring the flag-ship store John Lewis, L’Occitane and Hotel Chocolat amongst others. Plus it has an array of various restaurants
W
hen it comes to villages, Essex really stands out. Finchingfield is often referred to as the ‘most photographed village in the UK’ and it’s a well-deserved accolade, because it’s the embodiment of a quintessential English village just as you imagine – a beautiful ‘chocolate-box’ panorama, which includes a view of the windmill, church, Guildhall (now open to the public), duck pond and individual cafes and pubs surrounding it. It has graced the front of many magazines, and inspired no end of photographers and artists. But lesser known beautiful villages include Ingatestone, with its magnificent United Reformed Church towering over the town and a definite ‘must-see’, and Copford, where a visit to St. Michael and All Angels Church will leave you with a feeling that you have experienced something extremely unique and beautiful. It’s ranked in the top 100 in the Simon Jenkin’s book ‘England’s ousand Best Churches’. Although architecturally significant and sitting in a pretty location, the Norman wall paintings are the real attraction - again noted by Simon Jenkins as ‘some of the best in England’. A trip to Essex wouldn’t be complete without visiting Constable Country, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). 2 2 NOVEMBER 2017
Sitting at the North of the county bordering Suffolk, this is where John Constable painted some of his finest works. (Visit the village church and still see a Constable painting there today - ‘e Ascension’). e River Stour flows through the valley up to Flatford Mill where he painted probably his most famous painting, ‘e Haywain’. is area of the county is the perfect spot for walking and Sir Alfred Munnings also deserves a tribute here too. A mostly ‘equestrian’ painter, his studio and works of art can be seen at e Munnings Art Gallery just outside the village of Dedham. Whilst here, do as the locals do and visit e Dedham Rose Tearoom (owned by Wilkins), for a fabulous afternoon cream tea. Or have a light lunch or dinner at e Sun Inn, located in the High Street opposite the church, where their menus include as much local, fresh produce as possible. Maison Talbooth (Hotel) is located over-looking the Stour Valley and a fabulous place to stay to discover this area of the county – come for a weekend treat and you won’t be disappointed. It is sheer luxury from the Zebra-inspired bedroom decor (every room is unique), to the hot-tub on your patio, and the heated all-year-round outsidepool.

COSY DURING THOSE LONG AND COLD, WINTER NIGHTS WORDS: MICHELLE B. HARRIS
M
ost people prefer the summer: hot sultry days, dusky and balmy evenings. However, I prefer the cold. Maybe it’s the Russian blood and possibly the vodka too, that flows through my ancestral veins but as the wind starts to bite – Happy Days…. Even better, is being cosy at home when it’s dark outside. In order to prepare for hibernation mode, the first necessity is a cupboard, fridge and freezer full of food. Or as I refer to them – Provisions. e cupboards have to be bursting with a full range of nourishment which negates an urgent need to go outside. e radiators all bled so there’s no lapse in the warm ambient air. In an ideal and perfect home (or fantasy!) there would be plenty of wood for the fire but alas, living off the North Circular, I have a garden and not a forest; there is no lumberjack in sight, so heat control is not from a recently felled tree, but from the thermostat in the hall. When I’m not writing, or with friends or family, I really do enjoy films, preferably with Al Pacino or one directed/written by Christopher Nolan. So as part of the nocturnal or wintry respite, I have plenty of warm, thick blankets to keep me snug and for curling up in front of the television. If not dieting, a big tin of Quality Street embellishes the experience with a mug of tea (M&S Luxury Tea in the gold box is surprisingly good. eir soft set strawberry jam is another outstanding treat). Especially

important at Christmas time is the constant flow of chocolate. My preference is normally for good French or Belgian chocolate but at Christmas and when on a slippery, culinary road to weight gain, British chocolate is a must and preferably in a big tin so you can find the chocolates when the lights are turned off, i.e. green triangle is the noisette, red, roundish wrapper is strawberry delight (my favourite). By the way, am not sure if it’s my imagination but I think the Christmas tins are getting smaller! Cosiness isn’t complete without the 5 Fs - Food, fire, film, family and friends. When everybody is together, warm, well fed, content and relaxed is the epitome of my absolute happy place. From November and until the new year, when the UK weather is at its most relentless, only adds to the pleasure of being indoors. In contrast to this ideal scenario, is a thought for those less fortunate and who do not have a home or somewhere safe in which to retreat whilst the elements take hold. At this time of year more than at any other, it’s important to partake in charitable causes. Many people through no fault of their own are vulnerable, alone and unloved. If we are able to take care of ourselves, it’s important to think of others and to always help. e difference between success and failure can sometimes be as fragile as the flip of a coin… n

here were no ungrateful dead at La nostra on Sunday to celebrate Halloween and their third year in business. e team at the Italian eatery celebrated the way only they know how with prosecco, cocktails music great food and style. La Nostra well known for its fabulous food, amazing cocktails and its now ghoulishly famous bottomless prosecco, partied on Sunday with specially invited guests and regular customers to not only celebrate three years in business, but also to celebrate the fact they are not now selling the restaurant (which was on the cards a while ago) however the owners have had a change of heart. e party was also a great way to warm up for the festive season which is almost upon us and this year they are opening on Sunday as both Christmas eve and New year’s eve fall on Sunday. “A
fter hearing such amazing comments about the brand new Regent Seven Seas Explorer® Cruise, my wife and I were very excited to join the ship in Rhodes late October 2016. Upon embarking this stunning ship, she was not going to disappoint, the Explorer is truly elegant. We were greeted by ultra- friendly concierge staff and taken to our suite. The standard veranda stateroom is very spacious, and features a large 42 inch TV opposite the bed, the beds were heavenly, like giant marshmallow’s with such soft sheets and duvet, a powerful rain shower that’s big enough for 4 people, a good size separate walk in closet and a large balcony with two very comfortable chairs/ loungers that have thick padded cushions. The lunch menu by the pool is very upmarket, with a choice of daily fresh fish dishes, fabulous salads, freshly grilled prawn or beef kebabs, or there is a casual terrace restaurant with the most sumptuous buffet selection. The main pool area is beautiful, with flowing white voile curtains separating the large love chairs, and stunning oversized rattan pool beds with ultra-thick padded cushions. The Ranch Canyon Spa was one of our favourite places walking through the aromatherapy steam room and then straight into the ice room. After the spa
treatment, you can swim in the fabulous infinity pool, the first one ever at sea, which is located next to the spa at the rear of the ship. The restaurant selection and standard of cuisine is exceptional, with service that matches some of the finest restaurants around the world. In the French restaurant, Chartreuse, one of our most memorable experiences, the décor was so elegant and the French cuisine was sublime, wonderful touches was the soup course poured at the table to make the ingredients in the bowl come to life. We were also given a going home box of handmade macaroons, such a special evening. The Pacific Rim Pan Asian cuisine has authentic décor, gentle smiling staff who greeted us with a lychee martini!. Sushi, sashimi, duck spring rolls were all mouth -watering. Prime 7 steak house was by far the best steak house on land or sea that we have ever been to, tender juicy steaks, we were spoilt for choice of the amazing steak selection, succulent lamb chops with delicious sides, truly impressive, paired with the finest wines we have ever had. The entertainment was varied and professional, we really enjoyed the Irish comedian, and the local Israeli dancing group were beautiful to watch whilst we were overnight in Haifa. T
his month I will discuss and look at ways to help tired eyes, and the reasons as to why your eyes look tired, old or dark. When my clients attend for a consultation or new treatment, the eye area is normally always an issue in some way, the eyes are the windows of our soul, when you meet a person you naturally look at their eyes. Most clients seeking treatments will say 'I'm sick of people saying I look tired!' ese comments damage a person’s confidence when constantly repeated. ere are fantastic cosmetic and make up applications that can help disguise imperfections, but without a doubt it is harder to conceal problematic issues around the eye area. Few of us escape the occasional raccoon-eye when we’ve not slept well or been unwell with an illness. is is a temporary condition solved with rest and improved health. But what’s going on if you ALWAYS look in the mirror and see that “raccoon” looking back at you? Here are some suggestions of non surgical treatments that can help with specific issues. e right mix of these nonsurgical procedures can nearly mimic the results of plastic surgery with far less risk and downtime. Dermal fillers - Volume loss directly under the eye is the top culprit in creating under-eye hollows. Light doesn’t bounce off your facial contours equally. Projected areas get more “bounce” – cheeks, lips, nose, forehead…Any concave area is left in the shadows, so they look darker. Such is the case with loss of volume under the eye. So by using droplets of Hyaluronic acid fillers which draw water to the sugar derivative particles helps to re-volumise the hollow ring around the eye naturally. Furthermore, Volume loss under the eye and in the upper portion of the check will dramatically accentuate bags since the

“bag” is now the portion that gets the most light reflection. Subtle cheek enhancement will help to reduce the sagging folds under the eye and restore facial balance. I use Hyaluronic acid fillers or calcium based fillers to give definition. However if there is a lot of dystrophy or facial sagging then poly lactic based fillers are great and almost give a face lift effect! Plexr - Eyelid ptosis is simply loose skin; a result of age and sun exposure. Your eyes look smaller when the skin above and under the eye is loose and wrinkled. Again this appearance is accentuated by the light/shadow interplay of wrinkles. Plexr is a plasma based technology which emits an electrical arc and penetrates the targeted skin surface and will tighten eyelid skin by shrinking and lifting the tissue and spurring new collagen production for a renewed, fresh appearance of the skin with less wrinkling and smoother skin surface, it can also be used around the crows feet wrinkles and under eye crepey loose skin. Muscle relaxing injections- given around the crows feet area, helps to relax hyper active muscle activity and can create more space to make the eye area look more awake, open and fresher. Eye creams - my favourites are Anubis HA contour for very dry skin, Inspira med eye care cream for anti-ageing and vitamin C serum for dark circles. n

athroom design has come a long way in the last 20 years. Whilst the importance of functionality remains; many more homeowners are now spending time and money to ensure striking aesthetics within their bathroom. Designer bathrooms are a common site in many homes and such a project can add real value to the property. If you are seeking to create a modern designer bathroom look in your home then the tips below will help you achieve that goal.
A STYLISH BATH The first bathroom suite item to deal with is the bathtub. This is the piece of furniture that you will get the most enjoyment from and it is important to ensure that it provides comfort to the user. However, going for a practical model doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style and there is a vast range of bathroom models, from twin baths that allow two people to bathe side by side, to corner baths that serve to maximise available space. If you prefer the more traditional rectangle shaped bath, there are still options available that provide that designer feel. Going for a separate tap installation also serves to create a unique look.
THE SHOWER OPTION Whether you have enough space to install both a bathtub and a shower, or prefer to just have the latter in your bathroom; your choice of design will
have a huge impact on the room. Quadrant shower enclosures that fit into the corner of the room with an arc shaped glass enclosing the two sides, give an elegant finishing look to the suite. If you are planning to splurge on your bathroom and you have the space, you might like to consider a walk-in shower enclosure. Walk-ins give you greater mobility and access, and look grand as well as plenty of space to really relax and unwind. It is a good idea to have glass on as many sides of the shower enclosure as the bathroom allows. This will greatly help to increase the light in the room, which will in turn give the illusion of spaciousness.
AN APPEALING BASIN Although you probably consider the bath or shower
as being the most important of furniture in your bathroom, it is also the basin that acts as a central item in designer bathrooms. This is due to the fact that it will almost always have a mirror placed above it, which immediately draws the attention of anyone who enters the room. As such it is important to install a basin that looks fantastic. One option is to fit a vanity unit, with the basin sunk in so that it is flush with the surface. Alternatively you could add to the aesthetics by mounting the basin on top of the vanity unit and go for an unusual design, such as a funnel shaped basin. However, if you are going for an ultra-modern look and want to keep furniture down to a minimum, then a vanity unit may not be the right choice for you. In such instances a hovering sink with hidden pipes is a good option. If you have a big enough bathroom and enough wall space, you could even decide to go for the double sink, which not only look great, but are also useful in a busy household.
LUXURY TOUCHES Carefully coordinate your towels with the colour of the walls and bathroom suite. Add a stylish looking towel rail electric element to heat up the towels for added luxury, which also comes with an added advantage of warming up your bathroom. Decanting your soap and shower products into matching bottles is a simple way to create a stylish look in your bathroom. Coordinate other accessories such as the toilet roll holder and toothbrush holder. Get a sleek and stylish cabinet or matching boxes to hide away less attractive products or those you don’t want to show. A wellchosen bathroom rug, a potted plant in the corner, or a framed picture hung on an empty wall; small pieces which can completely revamp the look of your suite. Strike a balance by picking just a few significant pieces of bathroom furniture which will contain a certain colour. Offset it by choosing a neutral or contrasting colour in other accessories. By ensuring that your accessories are attractive and functional, along with some good, soft lighting, you can create a calm and relaxing retreat, right inside your home.

ver 250 attendees enjoyed a night of fun and sophistication and raised over £31,500 for the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance at our charity gala ball on 13th October 2017. Sponsored by Lancaster and e Blue Group, guests were treated to a gala dinner and charity auction hosted by BBC Look East and ‘Inside Out’ TV presenter, David Whitely. Attendees had the chance to bid for a range of high profile prizes, such as a ‘money can’t buy’ guided tour of the Bentley car factory, a Maserati for the weekend, a weeks stay in a South Africa vineyard, a fabulous stay at the world famous Sugar Hill Resort in Barbados and many other items. To help bolster the money raised, a high profile raffle was also conducted for prizes such as leading sports memorabilia, afternoon teas, restaurant vouchers and luxury hampers. Paul Beresford, Chairman/Managing Director of Beresfords Group, is delighted with the success of the organisation’s second gala ball. He says: “We are so pleased with the outcome; we have more than doubled the total raised last year and
