Georgian Jewellery The market for Georgian jewellery, pieces made between 1714-1837 is stronger than it’s ever been. Catherine Southon, Director at Catherine Southon Auctioneers & Valuers tells us more.

n line with fashion, buyers are looking for individuality, classic style, hand made pieces and exceptional quality – important characteristics of Georgian jewellery. Identifying Georgian jewellery is not always easy to the untrained eye... Assay marking was not enforced until the 1900s so you won’t find Georgian pieces of jewellery to be stamped with carat or makers marks. Georgian jewellery was often beautifully hand-crafted and popular motifs included flowers, sprays, ribbons, eyes and leaves. Georgian necklaces were often shorter some resembling chokers. Diamond rivière necklaces were a very popular piece of evening wear jewellery for the wealthy and are highly sought after today, they often featured closed back faceted diamonds that caught the light beautifully when worn. Many gem set pieces of Georgian jewellery were made with foil backing and enclosed backs in an attempt to make them sparkle and reflect more under candlelight. Techniques of this period also included enamelling, particularly amongst mourning jewellery. And as the first synthetic sapphire wasn’t successfully made until late 19th century, you can almost guarantee that the coloured stones of this period are genuine which is an added bonus to the true collector. As some diamond mines had not yet been discovered, diamonds were not always of the highest quality during this period and were often included however

that does not detract from their popularity today. Although Georgian gem set jewellery is attracting high value, Georgian costume jewellery is also very desirable. Paste jewellery was often made by the same jewellers who worked with fine gem set pieces so the quality is still very good. Many people are buying into the idea of having a unique and unusual piece of jewellery something that is not mass produced. A stunning paste pedant drop necklace recently sold at auction for £3,900 (see below), illustrating that selling paste period jewellery is just as good as the real thing. Parures or suites of Georgian jewellery which often feature matching necklaces, earrings and pendants were very en vogue in the Georgian era, however these were often separated into individual pieces in later years and therefore if they remain in-tact in their original cases they command exceptional figures at auction. As fashion develops so did jewellery and many Georgian items of jewellery were adapted or changed with some being melted down, as a result untouched original items in their original cases are selling for outstanding prices at auction. A Georgian Christmas at Quebec House

Many of our classic festive traditions come from the Victorian era so a Georgian Christmas offers something a little different! In true Georgian style, the house will be decorated with natural foliage including garlands around every banister and holly and ivy on every mantlepiece. Roaring fires, a sumptuous Georgian feast and music from the original piano will all add to the festive atmosphere. Try your hand at Georgian Christmas games in the Drawing Room and enjoy a boozy hot chocolate in the Coach House.

A festive Banquet What would Christmas be without a festive feast? Step into the Parlour and discover replicas of the delicacies that Georgian society would have enjoyed at Christmas time. See the traditional marzipan hedgehog, Twelfth Cake and jellied fruits in every colour of the rainbow. Perhaps you’ll be inspired for your own Christmas dinner or be left thankful that some recipes are in the past! Piano Playing Our talented volunteer pianist will be performing on our 1788 Broadwood square piano. Immerse yourself in the music of the past as the same sounds that would have filled Quebec House in the 18th century are brought back to life. Scrumptious Treats In the Kitchen, our Volunteer Cooks will be preparing delicious bakes from the cookbook of James Wolfe’s mother, Henrietta. Sample Georgianstyle gingerbread, King Cakes and Mrs Wolfe’s Rich Cake. Made to traditional Georgian recipes, we’ll be brewing both spiced hot chocolate and port hot chocolate. Which one will take your fancy? Late-night Opening Thursday 24 November 4-7pm. Free community event. Get into the festive mood and join us for a special late-night opening at Quebec House this Christmas. Enjoy special Georgian treats and see the house beautifully decorated. among familiar faces on new Royal Mail stamps

oyal Mail has unveiled a selection of stamps celebrating beloved Aardman Animations characters including Wallace and Gromit, Morph and Shaun

The Sheep. The Bristol-based animation studio was founded in 1972 and is best known for its films using stopmotion and clay modelling animation techniques. The British postage service company has teamed up with Aardman to feature some of their most celebrated characters on a new set of eight stamps. They include fan favourites Wallace and Gromit, Feathers McGraw, Shaun The Sheep, Timmy, Robin, Morph and Chas, Frank The Tortoise and Rocky and Ginger. Speaking about the collaboration, Royal Mail’s director of external affairs and policy David Gold said: “This set of stamps will surely bring a smile to everyone’s face. These instantly recognisable, iconic animated characters have found a place in our hearts. We are certain they will add a bit of joy to any envelope.”

In addition to the eight stamps, an exclusive miniature sheet, created specially for Royal Mail by Aardman, will also be available. On the miniature sheet, Wallace and Gromit celebrate four of their favourite cracking moments by displaying them proudly on their wall, in their recognisable home at 62 West Wallaby Street. Key moments on the stamps include those from Wallace and Gromit animated short films A Matter Of Loaf And Death, The Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave and A Grand Day Out. Aardman’s managing director Sean Clarke said: “We are delighted to partner with Royal Mail to celebrate some of our most iconic characters in this colourful and fun-packed stamps series. “We have had the pleasure of creating these films featuring these much-loved characters over the last 40 years, so it is a real honour for the studio to receive this royal stamp of approval. “It’s a true testament to all the hard work that goes into making these productions and we are sure that our fans will enjoy them.” Aardman was founded by Peter Lord and David Sproxton, who began their animation partnership while at school when they created a character called Aard-man, which the BBC bought for its Vision On series and marked the creation of Aardman Animations. Lord, 67, and Sproxton, 68, began to gain widespread recognition after creating the nowhighly recognisable shape-shifting clay character Morph for the BBC’s Take Hart series. Aardman are also responsible for creating some of the most successful stop-motion films, including Chicken Run, after British animator Nick Park joined the company. The Aardman collaboration stamps are now available on general sale now.

n the morning of the 9th October, keepers were incredibly surprised to find the small baby, known as a porcupette on the ground of its habitat. This is completely normal with porcupine births as mothers will usually leave the newborn and head back up into the trees, leaving the baby to gain enough energy to climb up to find her. After a quick health check, keepers confirmed it was a male and placed him in a higher part of the habitat. We usually see mum (Analu) start vocalising and looking for the youngster once night falls, which she seemed hesitant to do to begin with, but after a short while baby was drinking from mum. Our keepers perform a daily health check with any new borns and with this porcupine, they noticed it was not putting on weight as quickly as we are used to with other births. After a couple more days the porcupette was losing weight and we took the decision to step in and feed the youngster overnight to ensure its survival. A few weeks later and we are delighted to announce the porcupette is up to a great weight and now trying

Fitlogy Kitchen, Chislehurst Tim Lees shares his top picks for the best local restaurants. The Ambiance Fitlogy Kitchen is a boutique restaurant and cocktail bar, Set in the heart of Chislehurst serving a 75% Healthy Plant Based & Vegetarian menu. The venue is stylishly decorated with an eclectic mix of vibrant colours and a lush 1st floor terrace, overlooking one of Chislehurst’s two beautiful ponds. This is especially popular in the Summer and provides a real “Mediterranean” feel. We visited on a Friday evening recently, the restaurant had enough diners to make for a pleasant dining atmosphere without being crowded.

The Service We were greeted by Jade, who was friendly and also had a great knowledge of the dishes on offer and was able to guide us through the menu comfortably, evidently having enjoyed them herself previously.

The Food As mentioned the menu is 75% plant based, but there are sustainably sourced chicken and bacon dishes available for “die hard” carnivores. To begin we went for the sharing platter, which included olives, with a wonderful home made Sun dried tomato dip, Beetroot Hummus, Guacamole, Tzatziki, Sour Dough bread and tortilla chips. There are extras that can be added and we complimented the above, with some delicious plant based Halloumi cheese and succulent chicken skewers which were cooked to perfection. For mains, I went for the plant based Mac & Cheese. This dish is a favourite of mine and I found that this plant based version, provided all of the taste you would expect, but was a lot lighter avoiding the bloated feeling you might expect. My partner went for something a little different and opted for the Italian chicken burger with a charcoal brioche bun. The activated charcoal used to create black burger buns has detoxifying properties making the dish a little more guilt-free! This was served with home-made baked sweet potato fries and a rocket, seeds and paprika garnish. All of which was cooked to perfection.

his is something I am asked during aesthetic consultations at my clinics on a daily basis, mostly because clients want to have injectables with the aim of looking fresher, more awake, hydrated and above all, like themselves. Luckily at Emma Coleman Skin, myself and my colleagues specialise in creating natural results by simply replacing something that has been lost from the face. One example is depletion of fat from the mid and lower face which we all experience as the years pass. This is where we start to see the appearance of under eye hollows, lines on the top lip and jowls along the jawline. These issues can be gently lifted out through application of hyaluronic acid dermal filler. The result is purely dependent on the type and amount of product used, which can be tailored to each individual, and in no way should be obvious to anyone other than the client themselves. As we age, the face and neck also experience loss of tone, due to depleted levels of skin collagen and elastin fibres which help to maintain lift and

firmness, a bit like scaffolding! Skin boosters are another treatment which we often use in clinic which create a very natural outcome. s we move into Winter, the mood this year is all about comfort. What we’re currently seeking from our homes is to feel calm, relaxed and cosy. They are our personal sanctuaries, designed for no one but those that live within them, and they’ve become spaces where we want to express our unique tastes, personalities and histories. The contemporary home says ‘come on in,’ ‘snuggle into this,’ ‘remember this?’ or ‘have a look at that.’ Combined with our ongoing love-affair with all things natural, the décor emerging for A/W 2022 is soothing, serene and simple, either touched by the organic or with the highly personal embedded into it. These interiors inspire peaceful nights in, thoughtful conversations, happy memories and the occasional wry smile. Here’s the Chapins’ edit of the best.

A NATURAL EMBRACE / GREEN UPHOLSTERY As well as the colours and physical reminder of nature we are bringing into our homes this season, it’s also a representation of how all things natural make us feel. The welcoming embrace of the great outdoors is represented interiors-wise by sumptuous upholstery, tempting textures and cosy sink-into-me cushions, which combined with verdant shades instantly switches the mind into unwinding mode. Sofas and chairs emulate nature in the simplest, clearest of ways, with grounded, unexaggerated tones touched by the forest spanning moss, sage, fern and firs. Their designs also nod to the bucolic, prompting memories of being outside while welcoming you into their cosy, calming arms to ponder the joys of it all. The refreshed take on Arflex’s classic 1970-designed Marenco sofa by Mario Marenco has not only natural colouring, but its plump cushions channel the comforting envelopment that being immersed in greenery can bring. GamFratesi’s Beetle Chair in 3D Veneer, a new wood-wrapped take on the iconic shell-shaped design, sees its rich velvet upholstery take on the characteristics of moss growing across timber. The organic-esque fabric on Giorgetti’s Montgomery chair by Dainelli Studio lures in the eye like a patterned plant, the grassy shade spreading from the seat onto the upper ash wood arms to extend the verdant feel, and simultaneously hard yet soft,

LINE OF SIGHT / LINEAR PENDANT LIGHTS As the nights draw in and the curtains close, it’s time to think about lighting. The designs shepherding us through these darker days are based around simplicity. Not exaggerated. Not attention grabbing. Leading A/W 2022 are linear pendants made from elegant, slimline forms that range from the calligraphic, twisting and turning mid-air, to the steadfastly straightened. Such considered minimalism creates a soothing, easygoing space, one where the eye is pulled upward only momentarily and illumination appears as if from thin air. Decidedly minimalist, the Oneline by artist Kasper Friis Kjeldgaard for Fritz Hansen is a sleek slash of brightness which rotates 360 degrees to cast light in any direction. Moooi’s Gravity Chandelier by Paul Cocksedge is composed of elegant flexible arms which fall naturally in flowing curves, the shapes defined by where its glass shades are positioned. A pair of ultra-delicate rings, Lodes’s Elara pendant by Nika Zupanc is an understated representation of astral motion, its loops silently interacting with and orbiting each other. A suspended arc, Cattelan Italia’s Nahun

lamp by Studio Kronos feels almost typographical, as if drawn in the air with the sweep of a brush, the outer LED strip casting a diffused glow.

ON DISPLAY / GLASS DISPLAY CABINETS 2022 is the time to break those much-loved mementoes and treasured trinkets out of hiding. As part of crafting a home imbued with meaning and personality, we’re ready to put ourselves on display with the bevy of newly launched glassfronted storage pieces and curate our very own cabinets of curiosities. Transparent doors keep items safe and protected yet give them undeniable presence in the room, framing them and presenting collections to passers-by, declaring who you are and telling your story. The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Audrey cabinet by Pocci&Dondoli for Bontempi is composed almost entirely of extra-transparent glass, diverting all attention onto the objects placed within it. Gallotti&Radice’s Soda cabinet by Draga & Aurel adds to the display’s personality with its playful rounded shape and gold-toned glass, items on shelves interacting with its circular frame. ‘Like a small stage, rich in attention and details, Shibusa tells the story of personal passions’ confirms designer Mauro Lipparini, his cabinet an elegant combination of glass and ash.

A BIGGER SPLASH / TEXTURED GLASS When there is no need for glass to be transparent, designers are taking the opportunity to make it decorative and experimental. Transporting us straight to the shores of the sea, the foot of a waterfall or the reflections in a pond, this there’s a new vogue for textured glass ¬– steeped once again in our desire to be close to nature. Embracing the hypnotic yet soothing traits of water, pieces of glass are rippled and warped like sheets of water blown by the wind, expressions of deft craft skills as well as our collective need to bring the outside in. The surface of Cassina’s Esosoft table by Antonio Citterio feels like an angular slice of gentle river, its thick textured glass taking on the appearance of water softly brushed by a breeze. Bontempi’s aptly named H20 Coffee Table by Studio F+B Design forms a lonely puddle disturbed by undulating concentric rings, as if a stone has just been dropped into it, and Bonaldo’s blown glass Acquerelli Table Lamp by Marco Zito imitates a range of watery expressions, from icy frozen milk white to ripples full of intriguing movement.

Get your protractors out – angles are back. After years of yearning for circles, roundness and eschewing corners, sharpness and straight lines in the home, we’ve started to revolt. These aren’t your usual right-angled tables, it’s a whole lot more creative than that, with designers experimenting with balance, illusion and juxtaposition in materials soft and hard. Oh, and you can forget about the rules of gravity, too. Cassina merges precision and comfort with its Flutz chair by Michael Anastassiades, its sharp parallel aluminium sides sheltering a soft seat within. Unsurprisingly, Bonaldo’s Pisa coffee tables by Mauro Lipparini lean diagonally to the side, balancing themselves with an off-kilter surface or standing thin and tower-like. Square by Jonathan Olivares for Moroso blurs the boundaries between soft and hard, forming cushioned right angles and perfect lines in precise upholstery, while with its new Abat-Jour shade throwing more geometry into the mix, Vitra’s Potence wall lamp by Jean Prouvé shoots sharply upward, mixing the aesthetic of a wall and pendant light. chaplins.co.uk

With a media wall, you can expect TV units on panelling to hide cables, a clever use of storage, as well as mood lighting. If you are looking to create a zoned area for entertainment that is both practical and stylish then a media wall is the perfect solution. Media wall with storage solutions If you have the space, create a media wall with the TV centre stage, surrounded by plenty of storage. Add beautiful, mirrored cupboards either side of the TV and lower cabinets to run along the full width of the unit – these are ideal for hiding media boxes.
