EVERARD READ PRESENTS A SUMMER OF SCULPTURE AT RIVERHILL HIMALAYAN GARDENS

This summer, Everard Read gallery in London has partnered with Riverhill Himalayan Gardens to present, BRONZE, STEEL AND STONE, an exhibition of contemporary sculpture within the 12 acres of historic gardens in Sevenoaks.

iverhill has been the ancestral home of the Rogers family for almost two centuries. Known for its beautiful gardens and expansive views across the Weald of Kent, Riverhill provides an idyllic natural setting for engaging with sculpture. Everard Read has curated a presentation of 16 bronze sculptures by celebrated South African artists and a British sculptor. The artworks have been placed across the gardens including the Walled Garden, Primrose Meadow and the Rock Garden. Both Everard Read and Riverhill share a long history as family-run businesses. Established in 1913 in South Africa, Everard Read is among the oldest commercial art galleries in the world. This outdoor sculpture exhibition continues the gallery’s practice of presenting sculpture in spectacular landscapes where they can be appreciated in a natural setting.

David Bowie once said of this artist – “Everyone should own a Beezy Bailey”. One of South Africa’s most colourful and celebrated artists, Beezy Bailey is an artist set alight by the need to find expression for his creativity. Many of the ideas and imagery for his work emerge from dreams, the subconscious and a tireless imagination. Bailey’s father was a RAF pilot and his grandmother a pioneering aviator. Flying clearly entered Bailey’s imagination at an early stage, and never left his dreams Bailey’s Fallen Angel appears to be falling, floating and flying all at once - its head rooted to the earth, its reflection simultaneously floating in the clouds….

Deborah Bell is one of South Africa’s most celebrated contemporary artists. In Crossing II these seemingly ancient figures exude serenity as they drift, eyes closed, towards the horizon. Bell has described the smaller totemic figures resting on their heads as manifestations of one’s higher self. Bell has described her artistic practice as a journey through time and material to show something that has always existed.

Florian Wozniak’s work has an earthiness of form, and his sensuous, voluptuously proportioned sculptures often depict human beings in relationship with each other and the wider world. There is a tenderness about this work entitled Couple – the figures look upwards and outwards, facing the outside world while holding and supporting each other, their arms intertwined and their combined mass rooting them to the earth.

Speelman Mahlangu was a South African artist and sculptor. His imagery is distinctively African and draws on traditional practices and symbolism. Riding the Bull is the artist’s take on an age-old sculptural subject – the horse and rider. In Mahlangu’s hands the rider gestures openly and exuberantly to the heavens as he sits aloft a powerful bull, the most sacred beast in many tribal cultures.

One of South Africa’s most accomplished sculptors Guy du Toit’s Protective Hare is cast in bronze and finished with a unique mottled patination and gold leaf on the tiny hare. Full of pathos, Protective Hare gently cradles a small hare, shielding it from harm in a world of turmoil and uncertainty. Du Toit’s hares have a lightness of being. They are like quick sketches in the landscape, something glimpsed out the corner of the eye, like a flash of truth.

Acclaimed South African artist, Lionel Smit is best known for his contemporary portraiture executed through monumental canvases and sculptures. His sculptures are often highly textured, where the hand - and tools - of the artist are clearly evident in the finished bronze. In Surge Smit has created a double portrait, one face looking skywards and the other looking towards the earth. A simple yet powerful metaphor for life.

Olivia Musgrave draws inspiration from Greek mythology, as well as influences from 20th Century Italian sculptors most notably Marino Marini. This trio of sculptures are Musgrave’s take on the three goddesses of fate who personify the inescapable destiny of humankind. According to Greek mythology, the Fates assigned to every person his or her fate. Reminiscent of the monolithic human heads carved by the Rapa Nui people on Easter Island, Musgrave’s Fates have a sense of timelessness and peacefulness - indeed a calm resignation to their fate. Hever Festival Theatre returns with over 40 shows to entertain you throughout the summer and, for the first time, performances are continuing into September with Shakespeare’s Globe’s production of Julius Caesar (21 & 22 Sep).

The events take place in three spectacular locations in the award-winning gardens of Hever Castle, childhood home of Anne Boleyn, one of Kent’s top tourist attractions. The Loggia in the tranquil Italian Garden with the magnificent lake view, Anne Boleyn’s Woodland Walk is the perfect setting to enjoy some family shows including David Walliam’s Awful Auntie (29 July), The Crow House (17 Aug) and a retro caravan with a mind of its own in The Wagon of Dreams (4 Aug), and the Two Sisters Theatre, the original heart of the festival, where the outdoor seating is tiered and under cover or you can choose to sit where you like on the lawn and enjoy the vista from your own chairs or blanket, in the sunshine or under the stars. It is 500 years since Anne Boleyn’s first appearance in English court and the Festival Theatre is celebrating with the critically acclaimed play Anne Boleyn by Howard Brenton (18-20 Aug). Hever Castle Historians Dr. Owen Emerson and Kate McCaffrey also discuss their new book Becoming Anne charting her formative years (10 Aug).

ashioning Masculinities: The Art of Menswear is the first major V&A exhibition to celebrate the power, artistry and diversity of masculine attire and appearance. The show traces how menswear has been fashioned and refashioned over the centuries, and how designers, tailors and artists – and their clients and sitters – have constructed and performed masculinity, and unpicked it at the seams. Fashioning Masculinities presents around 100 looks and 100 artworks, displayed thematically across three galleries - Undressed, Overdressed, and Redressed. Contemporary looks by legendary designers and rising stars are displayed alongside historical treasures from the V&A’s collections and landmark loans: classical sculptures, Renaissance paintings, iconic photographs, and powerful film and performance. Outfits worn by familiar faces are interspersed throughout, from Harry Styles, Billy Porter and Sam Smith to David Bowie and Marlene Dietrich.

Innovative creations and diverse representations highlight and celebrate the multiplicities of masculine sartorial self-expression, dressing beyond the binary. Fashioning Masculinities opened with a Craig Green SS2021 ensemble of a deconstructed suit, alluding to the construction and deconstruction of both the masculine body and conventions of masculinity, a theme that is central throughout the show. Undressed will explore the male body and underwear in a utopian dreamscape, whilst Overdressed will take visitors into the elite masculine wardrobe in a sumptuous, immersive space with courtly grandeur, featuring oversized silhouettes, abundant colour, and lavish materials. Redressed includes a section on leather showing how designers like Tom Ford for Gucci and Donatella Versace took their interest to a new place, whilst a series of frock coats from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day include examples by Prada, Alexander McQueen and Raf Simons. And alongside is extensive photography showing changing styles and attitudes, from Oscar Wilde, Claude Cahun and Cecil Beaton to The Beatles and Sam Smith.

During that time I have dressed thousands of brides, so I would love to share my tips to ensure as smooth a shopping process as possible! When Should You Start Shopping We recommend you start your shopping quite early on, 12 months before the big day is perfect. Bridal designers tend to have a 6-8 months lead time, this then allows you 8-12 weeks for your fittings to ensure everything is carried out in a timely manner with no stressful rush at the end! Research Research Before you jump head first into dress shopping spend some time looking for inspiration. Instagram, Pinterest, Blogs and Bridal magazines are all great places to gather ideas. Start collating images and dress styles that you like the look of. Then it’s important to find the bridal boutiques that carry the type of dresses and designers that have caught your eye.

Setting Your Budget Before you start shopping work out your budget. Once you have set your budget make sure these costs are inline with the dresses and boutiques you are planning to visit. It’s important you share this information with your bridal boutique as the last thing we would want is for you to fall in love with a dress that is way out of budget. PRACTICAL PERFECTION Jenny Cooper says the transformation of her home by Nordhus Furniture was ‘the most amazing experience’. Rachael Hale tells us what happened.

enny Cooper and her two young daughters love to cook and bake simultaneously. Unfortunately, the kitchen installed in their new home was poorly designed, badly fitted and lacking in storage and workspace. A new kitchen was the only solution and Jenny asked Rikke Mitchell, founder of Nordhus Furniture, to create a bespoke design that would allow the whole family to be together. When asked why she chose Nordhus Furniture, Jenny revealed that she liked the idea of working with a local, independent company and, as she’d previously met Rikke Mitchell, immediately thought of her. Jenny also knew she wanted to have a bespoke

kitchen as she’d tried to cope with the shortcomings of her old one by adding additional pieces of freestanding furniture. The result was a ‘hodgepodge’, and she wanted a clean-lined, practical space that would allow several members of her family to use it at the same time. Finally, Jenny knew her home needed new flooring and heating and had an existing damp problem, but she didn’t want to have to deal with lots of individual companies. As Rikke originally trained as a Building Surveyor and is the founder of both Nordhus Furniture and Baltic Star Design & Build, Jenny knew she’d be able to solve all their problems. One of Jenny’s biggest concerns about having a new kitchen was that she and her husband would feel

overwhelmed with all the decisions and choices they had to make. She says, ‘We didn’t want to spend all our spare time searching for things or debating about what colour cabinets to choose, so being able to hand everything over to Rikke and her team were perfect. We just wanted to get it all done, and it was the most amazing experience.’ She goes on to add, ‘from the time we first visited the Nordhus showroom to the first day of installation was just six weeks, which I think is astonishing considering everything has been designed, and handmade, just for us. We’d also asked Rikke to redesign our lounge at the same time as we didn’t have enough seating or storage space, so there was a lot to be done, but the results are phenomenal.’ Having people in your home, especially when you’re working and have a young family, can be stressful, but Jenny says, ‘Rikke’s team are wonderful. They are all genuinely nice people and continuously turned up on time and told us what they were doing. They all take pride in their work and tidy up beautifully. Rikke frequently came around too and was always available if we had any questions. Another aspect that they did

brilliantly was that they concealed the stresses from us. There was a problem with one of the ovens at one point – I think it had been damaged in transit – but we didn’t know anything about it. The problem was sorted behind the scenes without us having any involvement.’ The kitchen is now a room Jenny’s family love to be in, and when asked what she loves most, Jenny says, ‘It just makes me feel content. The design is timeless, and we’ve gained additional storage, extra workspace and a much-wanted dishwasher. Everything now has a proper place, and Rikke even managed to fit in a new desk area that everyone wants to use. The lounge is just beautiful too. It’s full of gorgeous bookcases that don’t overwhelm the space, and for the first time since moving in, we all have somewhere to sit. Rikke even helped us with our lighting, appliance and wall colour choices. It’s all the little well thought out details that have made a huge difference, and Rikke has delivered everything we wanted. To learn more about Cults Big Summer Sale, we sat down with Becka, our Creative photography & Styling Manager, to discuss further... Talk us through the initial concept and story behind the Summer Sale campaign? Instead of the usual graphic sale campaigns we see everywhere, we wanted to push new boundaries for Cult with our “Fashion + Floral” inspired Summer Sale campaign. We chose to shoot this in an artistic setting with a model to breathe some fun energy into the campaign and to connect with customers. As the leading Creative Photography & Styling Manager, tell us what makes this one different from the rest? Aside from shooting with a model for the first time (which was incredibly fun!) we produced our first social media campaign video, which allowed

the high energy on set to be conveyed to our social audience. Where did you source/ gain inspiration for the styling, theme & photoshoot? When you think of Spring / Summer what comes to mind? Flowers, meadows, even freshly cut grass is up there! Our marketing team briefed in ‘red’ to convey the feeling of a sale, so it stemmed from there (mind the pun). In terms of inspiration the likes of Pinterest, Instagram, various interior and fashion magazines were all very instrumental in building the art direction and final look. Lastly, tell us your highlights from the days you spent shooting and working to bring everything together? The shoot itself was really high energy with such a positive feeling. The real highlights were watching the silliness of our lovely model Terri forward rolling over sofas and singing into floor lamps turned into a strong campaign - we even had a furry visitor sneak into the studio to come and say hello. cultfurniture.com

Tip 1 – Get a construction professional involved at the outset to ascertain costs and options. It is a common mistake to have expensive plans drawn up only to find the build costs are beyond budget. Be open and honest with your professional about your budget to avoid disappointment. Tip 2 – Good design need not be expensive. Simplicity is often the key. Avoid over-complicated design; lots of glazing and enormous extensions all increase costs and are unnecessary. Tip 3 – You may not need to extend. It is easy to be seduced by the idea of an extension solving all of your space issues, but your home may simply need to be reconfigured. Tip 4 – Don’t rush the process! What Rikke calls the Amazon Prime culture of having it tomorrow, can leave you with an extension which doesn’t work and is disjointed from the rest of your home. Redundancy and a global pandemic hit bringing these two chefs to join forces and combine their passion, expertise and fulfil their dream… Fish Union was born! What is Fish Union’s Concept? R: Fish Union was built out of a frustration at the lack of availability of fresh fish in the market, and fishmongers had disappeared from the High Street. As an island we should all be eating lots of fresh seafood, and Fish Union is on a mission to start the revival! A: We have uniquely married up an upmarket wet fishmonger with a small seafood and champagne

restaurant and are very much led by the seasonal and sustainable produce that we source. Our seafood restaurant offers small plates and market fish with whatever we freshly source that day so our menu changes every service which makes for a fun, creative environment. What is your signature dish? A: Our ‘chips’ have become a bit of a talking point locally - they pretty much have their own cult following! R: I have always believed that the guests decide the ‘signature’ dish of the restaurant due to popularity, which would mean our tuna tataki served with pickled radish, wasabi mayonnaise & ponzu would be it. What’s next for Fish Union? R: We continue to be on our mission to make fresh fish accessible to all through more dishes, events and our At Home range. A: We are working on some cracking new dishes for the Summer including a tuna burger. Watch this space… If you had to pick a favourite fish, what would it be? A: A John Dory. A super fresh sparkling dory with a simple side of samphire will do nicely for me! R: Turbot. King of the ocean and very versatile.
