DIFFERENCE COFFEE

A

mir Gehl, founder of the Difference Coffee, never used to like coffee. “It was too bitter. But one good cup changed my life.” Fired with enthusiasm, he started his business in 2016 with the pioneering idea of giving everyone the chance to try the world’s finest coffees. By buying the cream of the crop, roasting and grinding his precious beans to perfection, then putting his specialty coffees into user-friendly, Nespresso-compatible capsules, he made a great cup of coffee available to all. The best coffee is like fine wine. It is grown on small estates by farmers who are passionate about what they do: and, like wine, coffees are graded on a 100-point scale by acknowledged experts in their field. Gehl buys only the highest scorers: to be labelled as a “specialty” coffee requires a score of 80 points or above - only 1% of the world’s Arabica coffee makes the grade - but Difference buys only the very best, often from prestigious and rigorous competitions like the annual Cup of Excellence. His Panama Esmeralda Geisha, for example, was awarded 94 points by Coffee Review, the highest mark ever awarded to a capsule. Gehl’s coffees

are not just the cream of the crop, but la crème de la crème. It is a fact not lost on the world’s best chefs, restaurateurs and hoteliers. Difference now supplies more than 100 Michelin-starred restaurants around the world, including more than 30 in Italy, and Gehl can count such culinary luminaries as Anne-Sophie Pic, Guy Savoy and Pierre Gagnaire among his biggest fans, as well as a clutch of the world’s finest hotels, including Mandarin Oriental, The Dorchester and The Four Seasons. Imagine being able to push a button and pour yourself a perfect glass of Château Lafite, or a great Montrachet. That is the beauty of the Difference Coffee’s capsules: a supremely fresh cup of Hawaiian Kona, Jamaican Blue Mountain or Wild Kopi Luwak is at your fingertips. Again, like fine wine, Gehl’s collection of specialty coffees are all released in limited editions from single harvests, from 900 boxes per month to as few as 400: available exclusively from differencecoffee.com, prices start from just £1 per capsule. Luxury has never been so affordable.

CHELSEA FRINGE FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR ITS TH YEAR OF GRASSROOTS GARDENING

11

From 21st – 29th May 2022

T

“The Chelsea Fringe is a community interest company (CIC) founded by Festival Director Tim Richardson in 2011”

he Chelsea Fringe – the alternative garden festival and established highlight of the horticultural calendar, has announced the dates for its 11th year, with a nine-day festival. After two years of events mainly taking place online, the Fringe returns with the realistic hope of more communal, ‘real-world’ projects in 2022, and celebrating a huge range of horticultural and garden-themed events. Registration is now open for participants in the festival, which operates on an ‘open- access’ basis. This means that anything and anyone can join in, providing their event is ‘on-topic, legal and interesting’. The past decade has seen over 1,000 events held in more than 20 countries, encompassing everything from celebrations in community gardens, to themed workshops, walks, performances and art installations. The Fringe continues on a not-for-profit basis and is led by volunteers with most events in the festival free to attend. Contributors and venues to date have included community gardening groups, public parks, artists, poets, chefs, galleries,

schools, and major institutions such as Kew, the Inner Temple, the Natural History Museum and Covent Garden Flower Market, among many others. Despite its name, the festival reaches well beyond Chelsea; not just to every quarter of London, but also to the far corners of the UK and around the world. Events will begin to appear on the Fringe website from February, while registration remains open right up until the very last day of the festival. Potential event organisers are encouraged to make contact as soon as possible in order to make the most of the promotional potential that taking part brings. The Chelsea Fringe is a community interest company (CIC) founded by Festival Director Tim Richardson in 2011. All progress to date has been achieved by a team of dedicated volunteers donating their time. The Chelsea Fringe is entirely independent of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, though acts with its support. The Chelsea Fringe is now inviting individuals and organisations, first-timers and Fringe veterans, to contact them at info@chelseafringe.com outlining what they propose to offer as part of the 2022 festival programme. chelseafringe.com

The History Of

JIMMY CHOO

WE TAKE A LOOK BACK AT THE HISTORY OF JIMMY CHOO, RISING FROM HUMBLE ORIGINS IN A COBBLER WORKSHOP TO BECOMING ONE OF BRITAIN’S BEST-KNOWN FASHION BRANDS.

Y

ou can trace its roots back to a bespoke shoemaker, Jimmy Choo, based in the East End of London in the early 1990s. The fashion designer was born Jimmy Choo Yeang Keat in Penang, Malaysia in 1961, and using the craftsmanship he learned from his father, also a cobbler, Choo made his first pair of shoes at the age of just 11. His father wanted him to follow in his footsteps. Mr Choo recalls “When I first started, my father wouldn’t let me make a shoe. Instead, he said: “Sit and watch, sit and watch.” For months and months, I did that.” After learning from his father about the craft of shoemaking, Choo made his way to England in the early 1980s to study at the Cordwainers Technical College in Hackney, where he graduated with honours in 1983. Choosing to remain in England, Choo opened his first shop in Hackney in 1986 in an old hospital building. It didn’t take long for Choo’s reputation to build. The sexy cut, fashionable design, and exceptional Italian craftsmanship struck a chord with a sophisticated clientele, and the first collection enjoyed immediate success. Jimmy Choo was among the first to bring shoes and handbags to Hollywood where the red carpet proved to be the ideal runway for the brand. Soon, Choo became the darling of the celebrity world, in particular Princess Diana, who donned Choo’s footwear seemingly everywhere she went. High-profile devotees also include the Duchess of

“It’s a beautiful, distinctive art, and shoes are like the foundations. If the foundations aren’t right, the building won’t stand upright, and if a woman’s balance isn’t right, nothing else is” - Jimmy Choo

Cambridge, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and Kendal Jenner. The fictional Carrie Bradshaw in television series “Sex and the City.” famously sported Jimmy Choo shoes, boosting the brand’s status. Within two years of opening his shop, Choo’s shoes were featured in an eight-page spread in Vogue magazine. And it was his relationship with Vogue that would prove to be instrumental in the rise of the Jimmy Choo brand. Despite the rise of his popularity, Choo was still a small operation, making just 20 hand-made pairs shoes a week. But Tamara Mellon, an accessories editor at Vogue, who often hired Choo to make shoes for fashion shoots, sensed a larger market for Choo’s creations. She approached the shoemaker about partnering to create a line of readyto-wear footwear - with a goal of creating a global luxury business. In 1996, both Choo and Mellon quickly grew the business, keeping the focus on creating high-end footwear, but no longer relying on the idea that every single pair had to be made by Choo himself. They contracted with Italian factories and opened their first boutique shop in Motcomb Street, London. M AY 2 0 2 2 1 7

FEATURE

“In 2001, Choo sold his half of the company to Robert Bensoussan of Equinox Luxury Holdings for $30 million”

Two years later, the company expanded to the US, securing locations in the premiere luxury shopping destinations of the world’s most prestigious cities including Madison Avenue in New York City and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, also creating a line-up of adoring Hollywood celebrities including Julia Roberts and Renee Zellweger. International expansion continued with Jimmy Choo stores opening in Avenue Montaigne in Paris, Via Condotti in Rome, Ginza in Tokyo, and prestigious shopping districts Sloane Street and Bond Street here in London. And by the turn of the century, the Choo name was a global brand, with high-end retail clients that included Harrods and Saks Fifth Avenue carrying Choo footwear. The Choo brand had also expanded to handbags and other accessories. But in the background, all was not well. Choo and Mellon were at odds about the direction of the company. In what would become one of the more fascinating rifts in the fashion industry, Choo didn’t think bigger was better. He questioned the quality of the shoes the company was making, and seemed to long for the days when he was back at his shop in Hackney making a small number of pieces of footwear for specific clients. In 2001, Choo sold his half of the company to Robert Bensoussan of Equinox Luxury Holdings for $30 million. Jimmy Choo was then put up for sale in April after struggling to retain the status it held in the early 2000’s. Both Choo and Mellon departed in 2011 when JAB Luxury bought the firm for more than £500m. Today, Jimmy Choo encompasses a complete luxury accessories brand. Women’s shoes remain the core of the product offer, alongside handbags, small leather goods, scarves, sunglasses, eyewear, belts, fragrance and men’s shoes. Jimmy Choo has a global store network encompassing more than 150 stores and is present in the most prestigious department stores worldwide. This is what makes Jimmy Choo an interesting pairing with Michael Kors, as the former is known for its sky-high stilettos and glam, 1 8 M AY 2 0 2 2

crystal-embellished designs, while the latter gravitates towards down-to-earth leather goods and ready-to-wear. Jimmy himself now concentrates on a very personal business, where he designs directly for clients in high-end couture. Jimmy Choo was awarded an OBE in 2002, and girls and women around the world continue to covet owning a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes! jimmychoo.com

imed to cultivate the passion of the most loyal customers and to share the dream with the young collectors of the future. The Ferrari Testa Rossa J pays homage to the car’s tremendous victories, courageous drivers and the brand’s constant search for perfection. Relive the story with a product designed to be enjoyed with parents and children, and friends or family. This is Ferrari’s first ever junior car. A true limited-edition collectible, where every detail is of the highest quality, beautifully designed but has also been stunningly engineered. The Ferrari Testa Rossa Junior is a 75% scale recreation of a renowned classic, the 1957 250 Testa Rossa Pontoon Fender, one of the most iconic and successful cars in Ferrari and motorsport history. Ferrari has led every aspect of the project, in collaboration with The Little Car Company, a firm specialising in the production of junior cars. Developed and built from the original drawings kept in Ferrari

Classiche, this is a beautifully scaled tribute with just 299 cars being built worldwide. Designed to share the joy of driving across generations and a true collector’s item to be cherished. As an official Ferrari product, only components of the highest quality have been used, with each car being impeccably hand-built. The Ferrari Testa Rossa Junior is designed to be driven by anyone over 14 years of age.

Design

Attention to detail is exquisite: the bodywork is constructed from hand-beaten aluminium, the same process that was employed in historical models. The paint is the same as that applied to Ferrari’s present road car range, as is the insignia on the front. The junior car retains the same steering and suspension geometry, giving it authentic handling to match its original appearance. The steering wheel is made by Nardi, the same specialist company that supplied the 1957 model, and features Ferrari’s smallest-ever quick-release

system to facilitate driver entry. The same meticulous detail is found in the interior with Ferrari’s Styling Centre designing a single seat that accommodates an adult and a teen, faithfully incorporating the piping motif of the original and using the same high quality leather upholstery found in the Ferrari range today. The classic dials have been remastered and repurposed for their new role in an electric car but retain the original design and fonts. The oil and water gauges now monitor the battery and motor temperatures, while the fuel gauge is now the battery gauge and the tachometer has become a speedometer. There is even a power gauge which also shows the level of regenerative braking being deployed.

Performance and safety

The three batteries powering the electric engine are positioned at the front of the car, and provide approximately 90 km range, depending on driving style.

POWER: 10 – 12 kW DIMENSIONS: 3.1 X 1.1 X 0.7m DRIVING MODES: Novice, Comfort, Sport, Race TOP SPEED: Estimated above 60km/h* The Novice mode (1 kW / 20 km/h) eases rookie drivers into the driving experience with controlled acceleration and the ability to remotely disable the car from a distance with a key fob. The Comfort mode (4 kW / 45 km/h), Sport and Race modes become progressively sportier, with instantly responsive acceleration and increased maximum speeds. Safety has been a priority throughout the car’s development: the metal side panels were reinforced and an optional roll-bar can be anchored to the chassis. Brembo disc brakes replace the original drum system to maximize braking performance, and these are complemented by a hydraulic handbrake. €93,000 (excluding shipping and taxes) Build slots are secured by placing a fully refundable deposit of €18,600 The Ferrari Testa Rossa J offers a wide range of personalisation and colour combinations, all authentically in keeping with Ferrari style. THE QUEEN’S JOCKEYS TO FORM GUARD OF HONOUR ON CAZOO DERBY DAY TO MARK PLATINUM JUBILEE WEEKEND

2022

Friday 2nd & Saturday 3rd June 2022

Phil White, London Regional Director at The Jockey Club, said: “We are absolutely delighted that this year’s Cazoo Derby will be a part of the official Platinum Jubilee celebrations, and excited that The Queen intends to be with us on the day, and to mark her arrival at the racecourse we will form a guard of honour of around 40 retired and current jockeys all dressed in Her Majesty’s silks. We’re also inviting members of the local community and some local charities to support the guard of honour as flag bearers. “Derby Day always has that spectacular carnival atmosphere and we’re looking forward to a display from the Red Devils and a military band’s performance of the National Anthem which will all add to a wonderful occasion.” The two-day Cazoo Derby starts on Friday 3rd June with the running of the Cazoo Oaks, followed by Derby Day itself 24 hours later – an event which forms part of the official weekend of Platinum Jubilee celebrations. A maximum capacity crowd in the ticketed enclosures at the racecourse of more than 35,000 people is expected, with tens of thousands more expected to take their place in the free enclosures on what is known locally as The Hill. Epsom Downs Racecourse has also announced the Jubilee Family Festival, which will feature a main stage on The Hill and activities for various ages to enjoy. As part of the Family Festival zone, there will be an adjacent area with lots of racing charities showcasing what racing does so well. There are a number of charities being represented from a racing point of view, so it’ll be a nice showcase on a special weekend to show all the good work that takes place in the industry. “You can buy a ticket in one of our paid enclosures to guarantee your spot, or you can walk onto The Hill free of charge and be here in person to help celebrate the Platinum Jubilee. I think it’s a unique opportunity to be part of what promises to be something truly special.” For further information and to purchase tickets visit thejockeyclub.co.uk/Epsom

“The Queen’s Stand at Epsom Downs Racecourse will also be permanently renamed as The Queen Elizabeth II Stand”

he Jockey Club has announced details of how Epsom Downs Racecourse will celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s contribution to horseracing on Cazoo Derby Day, which forms part of the official Platinum Jubilee celebrations on Saturday 4th June. A guard of honour will be formed on the track by 40 retired and current jockeys to have ridden for Her Majesty, dressed in the monarch’s famous purple and gold silks, to greet her arrival. The welcoming party of jockeys will include 79 year old fourtime Derby winner Willie Carson, who also rode The Queen’s Oaks winner Dunfermline in 1977, and John Reid, who won The Derby in 1992. Current riders joining the line-up will include Frankie Dettori and Ryan Moore, both of whom have won The Derby twice, and another of The Queen’s regular jockeys, Hayley Turner. Another who is looking forward to this year’s Cazoo Derby and a potential Royal runner in the race is legendary broadcaster Brough Scott, who has presented The Derby on TV more than 20 times and remains part of ITV Racing’s coverage team, said: “The thought of The Queen winning The Derby this year, of all the fairy-tale stories, that would be beyond it. It’s a wonderful thought.” To recognise Her Majesty’s contribution to horseracing and her long association with The Derby, The Queen’s Stand at Epsom Downs Racecourse will also be permanently renamed as The Queen Elizabeth II Stand on Thursday 2nd June, two days before the 243rd running of The Cazoo Derby. On the same evening, a Community Beacon immediately adjacent to the racecourse, will be lit on Thursday evening at 9.45pm. There will be food, drink and entertainment, before people make their way to the Beacon lighting to finish the evening.

ROYAL MAIL UNVEILS NEW SET OF STAMPS SHOWCASING MIGRATORY BIRDS

By Alan Jones

R

oyal Mail has unveiled a new set of stamps depicting migratory birds, exploring the spring and summer bird

visitors to the UK. The 10 featured birds have been illustrated for Royal Mail by Irish ornithologist Killian Mullarney, one of Europe’s best-known bird artists, whose work has featured in the Collins Bird Guide and on stamps issued in the Republic of Ireland. The stamps showcase the diversity of migratory birds that arrive in the UK, from seabirds that migrate along the UK’s coastline, such as the Arctic skua and Arctic tern, to the rare bird of prey, Montagu’s harrier. Other birds on the stamps include the stonecurlew, swallow, swift, turtle dove and yellow wagtail. David Gold, of Royal Mail, said: “The migratory journeys of the birds featured on these stamps are truly amazing. Their annual travels have fascinated and baffled naturalists for centuries. “It is only now that we are beginning to understand what drives and maintains this amazing, high-risk–high-reward behaviour. We hope that these stamps ignite a new interest in this remarkable phenomenon.”

House and Garden ticket holders will be able to join the Visitor Experience Assistants at 2pm every day the house is open to discover more about the objects, stories and people who have influenced the history of this glorious example of 18th-century British architecture and landscaped gardens. Xanthe Arvanitakis, Director of Chiswick House & Gardens Trust, said: “The rise in popularity of period dramas such as Bridgerton and The Crown has sparked a great deal of interest in heritage properties and historic homes. Our Grade-I listed Neo-Palladian Georgian villa is full of surprising stories. Our new Spotlight Talks allow our visitors to delve deeper into the fascinating history surrounding the people and collections of Chiswick House.” Chiswick House was the home and creation of Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington. However, the Chiswick House we see today was never designed to function as a conventional house. Even while the villa was under construction in 1727, one visitor commented that the house was more curious than convenient. Highlights this year include the reopening of the Summer Parlour having been closed since 2019 due to Covid-19. The Summer Parlour is said to have been built as early as 1716/17 and attributed to Lord Burlington and celebrated eighteenth century architect James Gibbs. In 1735 the interior of the Summer Parlour was completely redesigned by William Kent as a garden room for Lady Burlington whose flower garden and aviary lay immediately to the east. The main surviving feature of the room is the intricate not to be missed ‘grotesque’ style ceiling by Kent

STYLE SECRETS OF THE

QUEEN’S WARDROBE A royal fashion expert reveals some surprising things about the Queen’s fashion. By Katie Wright. THE QUEEN DURING A VISIT TO TONGA IN 1953

6 8 M AY 2 0 2 2

M

any of us know the Queen often wears eye-catching colours so she’ll stand out from the crowd during public appearances. But there’s a lot more to Her Majesty’s fashion choices than just bright frock coats and matching hats, as Bethan Holt discovered while researching her latest book, The Queen: 70 years Of Majestic Style. To mark the Queen’s 96th birthday which was on April 21, Holt shares some of the surprising facts she learned about the monarch’s wardrobe…

She’s always been a style influencer

“British leather brand Launer (launer.com) has a Royal Warrant, and makes the Queen’s trademark handbags to her specific requirements”

During her younger days, the Queen was as much of a fashion icon as the Duchess of Cambridge is today. “I found throughout her life, the Queen has had the power to influence trends,” Holt says. “As a baby, her mother’s preference for dressing her in cotton rather than wool impacted trends.” While most of her clothes are bespoke, during the early years of her reign she sometimes donned ready-to-wear dresses by British label Horrockses while on foreign tours. Holt explains: “She allowed the company to sell the same dresses she wore, which was a gift for the fashion pages.” And she’s continued to set trends, with Holt saying: “Even today, her colour choices often spark a rise in interest – sales of lime green rose by 134% after she wore the shade for her 90th birthday celebrations in 2016.”

Majesty to carry,” Holt says. “Contrary to popular belief, she doesn’t own 200 styles – just a select few in different styles and neutral colours.”

She’s very particular about her silk scarves

When she isn’t wearing a formal hat, the Queen protects her hair with a neatly tied silk scarf, many of which are from Hermès. But on one occasion, Launer gifted her two scarves. “Gerald Bodmer, the owner of Launer, told me he was given very specific instructions about the gift the Queen would like as a birthday present,” Holt recalls. Bodmer was told she’d like a square floral silk scarf measuring 34-inches, and received a thank you from a ladyin-waiting when he sent over a pair of scarves in the requisite size and print.

Her handbag is specially adapted for her

British leather brand Launer (launer. com) has a Royal Warrant, and makes the Queen’s trademark handbags to her specific requirements. “They have an extra-long 16-inch strap so they hang comfortably from her arm, they are lined in silk rather than suede, and over the past eight or nine years, they have been modified to be as light as possible for Her

She often wears trousers in private

THE QUEEN AT ASCOT IN 2015

“The Queen has only been pictured wearing trousers in public a handful of times throughout her reign,” Holt says. “One such moment came in 2003 as she was leaving hospital following a knee operation.” M AY 2 0 2 2 6 9

Following the appearance, the tailor behind the trousers, Peter Enrione, revealed he had in fact made countless pairs of trousers for the Queen over the years. Holt adds: “While seeing her wear them in public might have caused a furore, they’re a central part of her private wardrobe.”

She’s her own style muse

THE DETAILS The Queen: 70 years Of Majestic Style by Bethan Holt is published in hardback by Ryland Peters & Small, priced £18.99.

The Queen’s sartorial archive is an inspiration to designers today. “Rachel Trevor-Morgan, the Queen’s milliner, told me she continues to be inspired by Her Majesty’s 1950s style for the hats she makes for her now,” Holt says.

She’s the original diplomatic dresser

Throughout her reign, the Queen has made numerous diplomatic statements with her clothes. “In the 1950s, Norman Hartnell created special gowns incorporating meaningful symbols, whether it was wattle embellishments in Australia, or bees (the symbol of Napoleon) in France,” Holt explains. “Over the years, she’s worn cherry blossom in Japan, modest clothing in Saudi Arabia and red and white in Canada.” CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: THE QUEEN IN HER CARRIAGE AS SHE HEADS TO ASCOT IN 2019; THE QUEEN AT THE ROYAL WINDSOR HORSE SHOW IN 2010; THE QUEEN DURING A VISIT TO NORTHERN IRELAND TO MARK HER 90TH BIRTHDAY IN 2016; QUEEN ELIZABETH II DRIVES FROM BUCKINGHAM PALACE TO EPSOM IN 1958

LAUNCHES DEBUT SUMMER 7 4 M AY 2 0 2 2

merging sustainable, luxury designer brand, IBEAM, has aunched its debut and Summer Collection of 2022, The Healing Hearts. The brand’s photo shoot took place in the heart of it all, London, capturing the perfect balance between timeless femininity and the edge of the modern world, with classic fitted silhouettes to old oversized structures. All pieces are made to transcend the seasons and trends, cut from handpicked premium fabrics that are sustainable and ethically sourced from around the world. “We named the collection, “The Healing Hearts” as we were (inspired) and designed at a period of time where we both were going through our own heart healing” says Ibeam Griffiths, cofounder & designer. After two heartbreaks and watching the world go through a pandemic, I wanted this collection to be a reminder that we can heal, grow, and love again - once the heart is healed love flows freely”. In IBEAM pieces you can expect to feel like a work of art wrapped in luxurious, organic, peace silk that is extremely smooth to the touch, beaming from the inside out, looking and feeling empowered. Additionally, “we will be expanding our collection to include more everyday pieces and swimwear that’ll use unique and innovative materials’’ explains Griffiths. About IBEAM IBEAM is an ethical slow fashion brand that hopes to capture an audience of people who want their clothes to make them feel good in a different way, who want to not only look good but do so with a clean conscience and well-informed buying power. Founded by Ibeam Griffiths and Leanne Cullen who met back in 2014 while working in retail in Covent Garden. As two 19 year olds they bonded over their love of dancing and Drake. Soon after, they were housemates and best friends, but when life happened, Ibeam found herself moving back to her hometown of Thailand and Leanne moving out of London. Keeping in touch from afar, they continued to share their passion for creating something special together, which would enable them to give back to others in some way that they were both passionate about. That’s when Ibeam Fashion was conceptualised – Ibeam’s childhood love for creative fashion design and Leanne’s desire to build an empire collided with their shared purpose to alleviate the suffering of others. For one and a half years, the girls researched, planned, and saved to build the first Ibeam collection. Through a global pandemic, two heartbreaks, one masters’ degree, and many a hurdle, the Healing Hearts collection finally launched in January 2022. ibeamfashion.com

BOUCLÉ IS BACK: HOW THE CLASSIC FABRIC BECAME A MODERN MUST-HAVE

Trendsetters are loving the textured material, says Katie Wright.

E

ver since the mid-1950s, when Coco Chanel reimagined what was previously a menswear design, the bouclé jacket has never really gone out of style. Beloved by royals, pop stars, supermodels and high fashion enthusiasts throughout the decades, a short, sharp Chanel blazer in the distinctive textured fabric (bouclé refers to both the yarn and the woven textile) is a timeless classic – and with a fourfigure price tag, it’s the ultimate investment buy. Yet despite its iconic sartorial status, bouclé hasn’t always been embraced by everyone in the fashion world. Previously seen as stuffy and a bit too prim and proper by some,

recently the fabric has had a major resurgence – and now it’s in high demand among trendsetters of all ages. The Duchess of Cambridge has been wearing more tailored looks of late, and was pictured in Copenhagen earlier this year in a red bouclé-style blazer – a £59.99 Zara steal that immediately sold out online (but has since been restocked). On Instagram, fashion influencers are proving bouclé is anything but boring, showing off everything from minidresses and playsuits to bra tops and bags. And on the high street, you’ll find plenty of lightweight pieces perfect for this transitional time of year. A black cropped jacket is eternally stylish and will serve you well for years to come, but for a more modern take on the trend, how about a sassy skirt suit in a bold hue, a pastel blazer or a textured cardigan? And if you want to bring a boxy blazer up to date, team with this season’s high-waisted, wideleg trousers, or jeans and a crisp white shirt. Add heels and a statement necklace to take the look from day to night. M AY 2 0 2 2 7 9

“It is as strongly ethical as it is vegan so this creates a tremendously high standard for us “

What challenges have you faced because of your choice to found a vegan ethical brand? The primary challenge that we faced is that because of our choice of being vegan and using only ethical production methods, we are at a great disadvantage in competing with luxury brands that can use anything and everything they want to get the aesthetics that the general fashion public identify with being a luxury and high end brand. We are extremely limited in the choice of not only the fibre we can use, but also the notions, embellishments, wrapping, packaging, promotional materials. What are the 3 most important things that your people should know about your brand? We are authentic...we really mean what we say and do what we say Our Brand was created by a deep passion to do what’s right by all Our Brand is meant as an inspiration for people to become engaged and involved in what is going on in this world, thus our branding and our Y logo. maydinchyna.com

IT’S TIME TO GET YOUR

NATURE FIX

A

t first glance, modern life seems to come with all the bells and whistles. There is the internet, for one, coupled with apps that mean you can now easily summon a packet of raspberries for midnight pavlova cravings. But it also seems to be accompanied by an undeniable twitchyness. Finding focus is harder than ever. And our senses simultaneously duller as we overindulge on the images fed by screens. Some concerned have inaugurated digital detoxes. Or set up ambitious limits on screen time. And yet there is a third way for those who don’t wish to swear off their social media entirely. Known in Japan as forest bathing, it involves the kind of regular immersion in nature that our ancestors would have recognised. Or, as the Finnish government is now prescribing, at least 5 hours per month spent exploring landscapes that are lush and living. Making sure we get our nature fix is an argument that’s eloquently been explored in a new book by Florence Williams. Over the course of 300 pages, she reveals how, in the open-endedness of nature, creativity soars, worry subsides and we become our most “civic-minded selves”. A heartening notion, until she drops the bombshell that we Brits spend on average just 7% of our day outside. 9 0 M AY 2 0 2 2

“As we inch closer to a world of hybrid work and a four-day working week, we have a unique opportunity to make life outdoors a permanent fixture”

Part of the problem, we learn, is an overbearing culture of office life and commuting. But as we inch closer to a world of hybrid work and a fourday working week, we have a unique opportunity to make life outdoors a

permanent fixture. Meeting us there is an eclectic mix of designers, each of which have been busy developing avant-garde furnishings that help us live outdoors with new fullness and serendipity. At Cane-Line this looks like the invention of quick-drying cushions — each fully ready for use just 60 minutes after a downpour. Flexform, meanwhile, have focused on bringing the icons of their lounge catalogue out, setting the stage for an al fresco experience that prioritises both comfort and quality. “For aeons, outdoor furniture was characterised by plastic or timber,” says Ludovic Aublanc, Creative Director at Chaplins. “Wonderfully resistant materials, it’s true, but not always the most inviting thing to sit on. These brands have changed all that. In taking the time to understand the way people live and lounge, they’ve brought the living room into the garden, allowing us to sink into new rhythms and rituals.” With many of these luxury designs, it’s also about what the eye can’t see. Advances in both foam and fabric technology mean that these new sumptuous styles are virtually impervious to the elements. “You can be a bit lazy now,” explains designer Patrick Jouin in

a recent Architonic interview. “Outside used to be rough — simplistic almost — but now you can indulge more. You can leave your furniture out in the rain for two weeks without covering them.” And when the sun does come out to play? You can enjoy the outdoors like never before. Indulging in all the magic that is dinner beneath a canopy of stars. Or else that delicious morning coffee, nestled in a lovely lounge chair on the patio. Simple pleasures — it’s true — but ones that help anchor us to the world and everything in it. Did you promise that 2022 would be the year THE DETAILS you spent more time outdoors? Then why Chaplins Furniture, not pay our Hatch End 477-507 Uxbridge Road, showroom a visit? The layout has been thoughtfully designed to take full advantage of the stunning views on offer from both the front and rear of the house. ritish homewares and lifestyle brand Sophie Allport has unveiled her new Chelsea Flower Show design for 2022. The beautiful floral design will appear on a fine bone china mug (standard and large) and tea towel, all making excellent Chelsea Flower Show souvenirs and memorabilia. Sophie’s illustration of Chelsea Flower Show 2022 is filled with rows of beautiful irises, a magnificent sculpture and a pathway that leads through to the pavilion behind. Dragonflies, butterflies, and bumblebees dance through the sky, whilst the spectacular London parakeets sit proudly on the treetops. Dressed in iconic scarlets, cheerful Chelsea Pensioners enjoy the relaxed ambience of the tranquil grounds. Last year was the first year that Sophie Allport launched a Chelsea Flower Show Tea Towel in recognition of the event, with both the Tea Towel and Mug being sell-out designs. Sophie Allport has been attending Chelsea Flower Show since 2010 and last year won a four-star stand award. Held on the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, the show inspires hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world across five days. This year the event will be held from the 24th to the 28th of May 2022, making a return for the spring season as last year it was held in autumn due to COVID-19. “I absolutely love Chelsea,” explained Sophie. “It’s one of the highlights of our year. We love seeing all our customers, and as a keen gardener, I always look forward to seeing all the gardens and displays, which are so inspirational. A new concept in outdoor cooking for your best summer ever for outdoor entertaining.

The Charlie Outdoor Charcoal Oven

I

t’s time to take the cover off the BBQ and enjoy the Summer. But will the reality live up to our dreams? well, it all depends on what you’re cooking with. We think of BBQs for warm, sunny days. But we use our BBQs a lot less than we’d like to. In the UK – largely thanks to the weather - the average BBQ is only used five times a year. But with Charlie, it’s always BBQ weather! Its front-opening design minimises heat loss and protects your food from the elements. The cooking is all done in the sealed oven chamber, while the chef can sit indoors, just waiting till Charlie has created its magic, whatever the weather outside. Charlie is totally weatherproof. It’s made in Britain from solid steel, in nine striking colours. It can live and work outdoors all year round. You can use it day in, day out. When we think BBQ, it’s sausages, burgers, maybe steaks. But it so often over-promises and under-delivers. How about fish, charcoalgrilled with the taste of the Mediterranean? Seafood? Vegetables? Bread? Fruit? Desserts? Pizzas? With Charlie you can do the lot. And add amazing, smoky flavour to whatever food you choose to cook. It’s a BBQ, a pizza oven, a smoker and a grill. With 2.5 times the capacity of a domestic oven. Delight the meat lovers, the vegans, the vegetarians, the pescatarians. Cook vegetables so tasty that even your children will eat them. There’s no need to be an “expert” at BBQ-ing: anyone can use Charlie. Even though it’s inspired by the front-opening charcoal ovens that are the secret of top professional kitchens. We call Charlie, “The Chef Maker”. In many ways, using Charlie is the opposite of BBQing. It’s totally hands-off. No need for constant attention, no face full of smoke and heat. You can set Charlie from 100°c for low ‘n’ slow, up to 500°c for incredibly fast searing of meat or pizzas. Easy peasy. Just put in your food and Charlie will create the magic for you! Sit back. Relax. Enjoy looking at your beautiful oven. Enjoy the incredible food. Enjoy the sunshine….but enjoy The Charlie Outdoor Charcoal Oven all year round! charlieoven.com @charliecharcoaloven

SPLASH OF

I

f you love to play with colour, and bright, beautiful surroundings sound appealing right now, the colourful cottage trend marries a free-spirited attitude with a love of the great outdoors. There are plenty of ways to get the look – and you don’t need to live in an actual cottage to channel your inner flower child and go from white to wow! “During the height of 2020, pastoral, country-style design aesthetics saw a surge in interest, with many people presumably looking for a way to escape the feeling of being ‘stuck’ in urban or suburban homes and environments,” observes interior designer, Celina Digby (celinadigby.co.uk). “With this, cottagecore became the top design style during the year’s summer.” Country chic and farmhouse aesthetics are seeing a comeback right now too, and Digby says this time the look has had a bit of a makeover. “While the cottagecore of lockdown saw people hero-ing neutrals and pastels – such as creams, pastel pinks and blues – 2022’s version

is all about injecting bolder colours into our spaces,” explains the interiors expert. Lyndsey Roberts, homewares buyer for Joe Browns, agrees: “The colourful cottage trend is inspired by our return to the outdoors and a rejuvenated appreciation for the classic English garden, something we all became very familiar with during various lockdowns.” For their latest collection, Roberts says florals undergo a fabulous makeover: “We look to the magical jewelled and vibrant colours of butterflies against the explosive colours of striking garden flowers.” “It’s all about bringing the natural beauty of the outdoors inside,” notes Roberts. “And finding ways to inject the plethora of colours within the palette of the British countryside into your home.” And the great news is, it’s easy to create a colourful home and build on the cottagecore romantic concept, such as introducing some curvaceous pieces in a brighter than usual shade. It’s not just about sticking with one set of bright shades though. There’s certainly room for an eclectic touch and mixing patterns

and materials. As Rohan Blacker, founder of Pooky, puts it: “Country cottage style tends to invoke images of muted earthy tones, mix-and-match botanical printed fabrics, and spaces filled with wooden furniture.” “For those who are braver with colour and looking to create a modern version of this aesthetic, opt for accent items in primary red, blue and yellow across accessories and lighting,” suggests Blacker. “Think floral fabric lampshades paired with boldly bright resin bases, or a selection of patterned scatter cushions strewn across the sofa.” Along with soft furnishings, sprays of dried flowers and farmhouse dining chairs – the spindle switched up a notch with a pop of colour – think about your main background colours too. Helen Shaw, UK director of Benjamin Moore, says introducing bright colours on the walls is a quick and easy way to update and invigorate your space. “Or if you’re looking for something a bit different, why not create a colour scale for a more playful finish?” Moore asks. A colour gradient is a “great way to introduce colour in a striking, eye-catching way, brightening up your home with a striking and impactful twist”, she says. Otherwise, Shaw says to look at the areas in your home which lend themselves to detailing – not only for an instant burst of colour, but to elevate the space with creativity and a personal touch. “Updating even just a small corner of your home with a new colour can bring about the most enormous changes to not only your 1 1 4 M AY 2 0 2 2

space, but also your mood,” says Shaw. “Perhaps colour is more important now than ever before.” Likewise, trying your hand at tablescaping to give your dining room or table setting a makeover with some simple styling tricks can be hugely rewarding. “The colourful cottage trend for tablescaping blends bold primary colours in homely and rustic table settings,” says Margo Kane, cofounder of Tableday. “It has some of the cosy earthiness and traditional feel of cottagecore, with its natural materials for placemats and charger plates, but instead of dreamy pastel napkins, candles and flower arrangements, colourful cottage has bold punchy brights,” explains Kane. To get the look, Kane says you could pair bright red gingham napkins with vibrant green foliage, and quirky iron candlesticks with strawberry-red candles. Whichever side of the farmhouse fence you sit on, reinventing furnishings and laying the table is fun – and far from formal. “Colourful cottage tables are earthy, bright and much less dressed up than regencycore,” notes Kane. “And has brighter, bolder primary colours, whereas regencycore is more sophisticated, with subtle Bridgerton blues and crystal glasses.” And who wouldn’t drink to that, with tiki cocktails also trending and thoughts finally turning to sipping and dining in brighter, sunnier surroundings? Cheers to unleashing your creative side, with colourful cottage for a summer refresh!
