Open Air Sculpture Exhibition Opens in the Gardens of Knebworth House
S
et in 250 acres of rolling Hertfordshire countryside, Knebworth House is one of England’s most colourful stately homes. It is remarkable for having been in the Lytton family for more than 500 years. Its romantic gothic exterior complete with turrets, domes and gargoyles conceals a much older Tudor red brick house.
Knebworth achieved fame in Victorian times as the home of the novelist, playwright and politician Edward Bulwer Lytton author of the words “The pen is mightier than the sword”. Other notable family members included Constance Lytton, the Suffragette and her father, Robert Lytton, the Viceroy of India who proclaimed Queen Victoria Empress of India at the Great Delhi Durbar of 1877. The House has been visited by famous figures such as Queen Elizabeth 1, Charles Dickens, Winston Churchill and many more. There have been gardens at Knebworth House since at least the 17th Century, but the present layout dates largely from the Edwardian era. The architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, who married into the Lytton family, simplified the ornate beds and statuary of the Victorian garden with lawns and avenues of pollarded lime trees. Popular features of the 28 acres now include a maze, the organically run walled kitchen garden, the Gertrude Jekyll Herb Garden and the Dinosaur Trail, where 72 life-sized dinosaurs can be found grazing amongst the rhododendrons and the redwoods. Exploring the woodland paths, children can learn about the T-Rex, the Woolly Mammoth and other fascinating pre-historic creatures. Open Air Sculpture at Knebworth is an exciting new sculpture exhibition taking place in the idyllic setting of the gardens of Knebworth House which runs until Sunday 31st August
6 AUGUST2014
2014. The exhibition has been curated by British Art Portfolio, their first sculpture show to be held in the Garden. The show features the work of 19 contemporary sculptors each displaying two or three pieces using materials such as bronze, wood, marble, stone, copper and stainless steel in a wide range of subjects and styles to suit all budgets. In choosing the sculptors British Art Portfolio has incorporated established names alongside inspiring new talent to create a show that will enlighten, provoke, excite and charm the visitor. The gardens at Knebworth were largely influenced by Sir Edwin Lutyens who married into the Lytton family in 1897. He created a series of ‘garden rooms’ each with a different feel, which are effectively highlighted by the skilful placing of each sculpture. ‘The gardens are the perfect place for sculpture and it is exciting to introduce man-made art into the landscape, as differing areas of the gardens offer new surprises round every corner’ says Amanda Lowther of British Art Portfolio. Martha Lytton Cobbold, MD of Lytton Enterprises commented, “We are delighted to be working with British Art Portfolio. The sculptures look superb in the Gardens and I’m sure our visitors will enjoy them – there is such a wide range of subjects; from running cheetahs and a very majestic zebra to intriguing abstract forms.”
There is no additional charge to visit the exhibition, which is included in the Gardens & Park admission ticket. See www.knebworthhouse.com for more information, and to view the online catalogue for the exhibition.

Chefs Q&A Describe your style Modern British. I grew up in Oxfordshire in a family of cooks. I have always loved food and am as British as they come! I try to use seasonal ingredients and local produce where possible. I really enjoy taking simple ingredients and turning them into something that tastes great. How do you decide your menu? I work with the seasons and take inspiration from my team. Lots of tasting! Which menu dish do you most enjoy preparing? I enjoy making all the dishes on the menu and don’t have a particular favourite although the Lobster Ravioli is great for the summer. What ingredient is most important to your cooking? Fruits as these create the balance between sweet and savoury dishes. What’s been your best culinary idea? I couldn’t pin down a particular idea but stumbling across foraging has changed my cooking. I love being able to go out for a walk on the estate, find wild herbs, plants and mushrooms and take them back to the kitchen and make something extraordinary out of them. Who did you train under and what did they teach you? I first trained under Gus Ashenford at Chavignol in Chipping Norton. He taught me the classic French techniques that I enjoyed using on local British produce. My time with Claude Bosi and Hibiscus in London taught me finesse in finishing my dishes. What’s your prediction for the next food trend? I don’t really have an opinion on food trends and don’t follow them. I am more interested in the seasons and what makes great tasting food. What’s in your fridge at home? Pots of pureed food and baby milk! I have a 7 month old daughter at home. Favourite quick meal? A great sandwich. Brie de Meaux, cured ham and red onion marmalade – delicious! Top three tips for amateur chefs? Buy best produce available, keep it simple and taste taste taste! Best cookbook? Vienna Festival Ballet
Vienna Festival Ballet wrapped up their Spring tour of the UK in Radlett at the beginning of June. They have a strong relationship with the Radlett Centre, most years returning for both their Spring and Autumn seasons to adoring audiences – a lot of them regulars. Audience member Julie Sturrock called the performance of Cinderella, ‘magical’, and another audience member, Sharon Russell says it was ‘amazing! Looking forward to seeing them again in September.’
Sitting in on their get in, they’re in high spirits for the last shows of the tour. They have class on stage to stretch and warm themselves up, which is a show of technique I’d pay to see in itself. They have this class before every show, and in the weeks building up to rehearsals. I think it’s easy to forget the athletic regime these dancers have to adhere to every day, when you’re watching them effortlessly gliding across the stage in pretty costumes. Even though the tour is coming to a close, ballet mistress Emily Hufton doesn’t let them get away with anything, constantly calling out ways in which to improve technique with a minute change in posture or balance. It’s evidently this attention to detail which has kept the company going strong for the past 34 years. But we mustn’t forget they’re not just dancers, but actors. Emily-Joy Smith explained, ‘the Spring tour for me was a great challenge, having major roles in both Cinderella and Swan Lake. The hardest part for me was going from one character to another, the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella and White Swan in Swan Lake meant I had completely different characters to work with for each ballet.’ Amongst the company which toured this Spring, we know that principal dancer Emily Joy-Smith, who danced the Fairy 10 AUGUST2014
Godmother in Cinderella, will return for the Autumn tour in role of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Emily-Joy Smith currently features as the front of their marketing campaign, posing in the pink Sugar Plum Fairy tutu which will surely appeal to young ballerinas. ‘I’m looking forward to the Christmassy feeling you get with The Nutcracker, and of course the amazing costumes, and the music – there’s just so much to look forward to.’ Rehearsals for their Autumn Tour of the Nutcracker begin in September. The enchanting tale of The Nutcracker is one of the world’s best loved ballets with music by Tchaikovsky. The story centres around Clara and her nutcracker doll, which magically transforms into a princeply soldier. Their adventures see Clara and the Nutcracker doll combat the Mouse King, and join the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier on a wonderful journey through a shimmering winter land scene to a Kingdom made entirely of sweets. It’s sure to be a Christmas treat for all the family. VFB return to Radlett on Saturday 1st November with two shows of The Nutcracker at the Radlett Centre.

BRINGIN G A BIT OF AMERICA TO HERT
Sloppy Joe’s Bar & Grill is back... FORDSH IRE
f you lived around the Hertford area from 1985-2002 you may have well frequented the infamous Sloppy Joe’s Bar and Grill on Old Cross in Hertford town centre. Well known for bringing a bit of America to Hertfordshire with its memorabilia filled walls, industrial lighting, booths, burgers, milkshakes, cocktails and informal atmosphere it became a firm favourite for adults and children alike. After a successful facebook campaign to ‘Bring back Sloppy’s, with over 1000 likes in a day, Sloppy’s was resurrected to its former glory this April in the same place it stood before. Using photos of the original layout and design, and luckily finding the original memorabilia in someone’s garage, the venue was painstakingly put back together which has had the thumbs up from former regulars. The menu is a journey right through America down to Mexico from the New York chopped salad and rib eye steak, the South’s favourite fried green beans and ribs to the Mexican Waco Tacos. All the meat is from a local butcher and cooked either low and slow in the house smoker or flame grilled! Americans love wings and a beer and at Sloppy’s there is a whole section dedicated to them from cool for the faint hearted to pretty spicy for the chilli heads amongst you. The little Dudes and Dudettes menu has a great range of food for kids with burgers and grilled chicken strippers all cooked fresh. Kids are more than welcomed at Sloppy’s with wild west colouring in and a magician on some Sunday brunches. Also a great venue for kid’s parties. Every Sunday a proper American brunch is served from 10 am to 12.30pm with the Full ‘works’ Sloppy’s breakfast, butties to waffles and pancakes, all served with bottomless coffee and tea. Not forgetting the ‘Hair of the Dog’ Bloody Mary menu. 16 AUGUST2014
Taking inspiration from Man vs Food every Tuesday is Charity Challenge Tuesday. There’s a Frickin’ Blazin’ hot wing challenge with the spiciest wings at a few million scovilles (that’s the heat scale for chilli’s which basically means insanely hot!) There are two ‘BIG’ challenges, the Mega Munch and a Sloppy Joe challenge which no-one has completed to date. Winners get a Sloppy’s challenge t-shirt and their picture on the ‘Wall of Fame’. If you don’t it’s the ‘Wall of shame’. A percentage of proceeds whether they win or lose go towards a charity of the month. Are you up for the challenge? With Sky and BT Sport, 4 HD screens and one huge projector screen showing all sports this is the place to grab a beer & bucket of wings and kick back and enjoy your favourite sport. Not forgetting the drinks, the cocktail menu was designed by top London mixologists Soulshakers, with creative fun cocktails, classics, indulgent milkshakes and Margeritas and Daiquiris from their own slush machine. Plus Bud on tap, the usual suspects and American craft beers such as Sierra Nevada. Sloppy’s has a great autumn ahead continuing their relaxed, fun, taking themselves not too seriously, cozy vibe with new live music nights, Power ballad Friday’s, great sport games, an updated menu including a Dirty Dawgs section and new shot and Fizz taster menu. It really has something for everyone! Follow ‘Sloppy’s Hertford’ on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to find out what’s on and their latest offers or go to sloppys.co.uk. Dive Into Nature WITH A NATURAL SWIMMING POND
“It’s an immaculate temperature, that’s the first thing. And it doesn’t feel like swimming anywhere else, it doesn’t feel like the sea, it doesn’t feel like a salt water pool, it feels incredibly fresh,” says Matthew Van Grutten, one of the visitors at a recent swimming pond open day. “It’s a very special feeling. Overall, an immaculate experience.” “It feels so clean,” agrees Wendy Smith, another visitor at the open day. “It’s like having a really nice bath.” “The water’s lovely, really crystal clear,” says Chris Graham, swimming pond owner in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire, where Gartenart hold an open day every year. “You could read a book on the bottom if you threw it down there.” Swimming ponds - or natural swimming pools (the terms mean the same) have been growing in popularity in the UK for several years now, particularly in those locations where maintaining the natural outlook is of prime importance. “I wanted to be able to sit and look out from the garden and see nothing unnatural,” says Sacha Cole, whose swimming pond was installed in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. “I wanted the pond to be part of a view that flowed seamlessly from the garden to the countryside beyond... I love the natural beauty of it, the way it grows and becomes part of the garden.” But how can what is essentially a wildlife pond actually stay clean? “A swimming pond works by keeping the nutrient level in the water very low,” explains Tim Evans, managing director of Gartenart, who have built over one hundred swimming ponds in the UK in the last ten years. “Under these conditions water naturally stays clean and clear, like a lake you may

KINGS LANGLEY
come across in the mountains. The water there is clear and even drinkable, not because of the temperature, but because there is very little nutrient input. The natural microscopic processes in the water then remain in balance, and the result is clear and healthy water.” This is unlike the water in most wildlife ponds we see around us, which as we well know, is usually not something you would want to dive into. The reason for this is that the nutrient level in these ponds is invariably very high, with run-off from roads, fields, and decomposing organic matter from leaves and other plant life. A swimming pond is set up to minimise this input of nutrients, and the water in the pond is also circulated internally to reduce the nutrient level further still. How about temperature? Surely it’s just too cold to swim regularly in unheated water in this country? Well, apparently not, according to swimming pond owners, with most reporting temperatures of 22-24 degrees throughout the summer and even up to 26-27 degrees in warm periods, due to the shallow planting areas heating up quickly in the sun. It is, however, possible to add heating if you wish. The other common question is around costs. A swimming pond starts from £70,000 incl VAT for a naturally designed pond, and most domestic-sized swimming ponds suitable for family use cost between £80-£100,000 incl VAT. Features such as heating, tiling etc, of course add to this. For more details please visit www.gartenart.co.uk or call 020 7183 3333

ype ‘landscape artists’ into Google and you’ll be immediately presented with the masterpieces created by a multitude of enduring names in art history; Monet, Constable, Turner. There is a great weight when entering this field yet David Renshaw established a confident, accomplished and fresh perspective when he entered the profession almost a decade ago. As a self-taught artist, he admits that it was daunting to enter into such an esteemed genre. It didn’t show.
Often a solitary existence with long hours of dedicated silence (though audio books keep him company), Renshaw illustrated his point by recalling the masters of old who painted in winter by candlelight, crouched over their boards. Since then, I have held an image of the artist conjuring his exquisite vistas in near darkness, waiting to be delivered to the bright lights and white walls of the gallery space in the 21st Century.

SUNSET ON THE SHORE ORIGINAL OIL ON BOARD £995
Today Renshaw has quite a different problem than candlelight versus electricity on his hands with the blistering heat warming the studio to temperatures well above comfort. The artist however is in good spirits; he moved into the space only 18 months ago and is still luxuriating in it. Boards are leant carefully against the wall and on work benches in various stages of undress; primed, under-painted and partially detailed. The artist demonstrates that he paints in oils from back to front, mixing just seven colours primarily to start with the skies – the foundation of every completed work. It is this heavenly aspect of his work to which the exhibition owes its name. The flurry of activity is in aid of the approaching exhibition date; Saturday 20th September will celebrate the culmination of months of preparation and perseverance to assemble a collection of original paintings which will expose the breadth of Renshaw’s themes. As the only dedicated show of his work in the country this year, the artist has chosen this event to reveal a new chapter in the story dedicated to Doris and Ted, the protagonists of the Northern Romance series which have captivated an evergrowing audience. The decision echoes his debut exposition at the Hertfordshire based gallery in 2010, during which collectors first caught sight of the star crossed lovers. Little did Renshaw expect the overwhelming reaction to these five paintings, inspired by his desire to introduce emotional narratives to his work. The catalyst was his family, three generations of romantic and parental love stories. The unconditional commitment of Renshaw’s grandmother Peggy to her husband Lawrence even after his premature passing in his early forties left a lasting impression on the artist as a youth.
been with since the tender age of 16. In a relationship of twenty four years, married for twenty one, the pair had children young. Daughter Alison has recently turned 22, with son Max just 18. Max makes an appearance whilst I am there and it is clear that immediately Renshaw has taken his artist hat off and put his father hat on. The two talk about directions to an unknown destination, before Max makes a hasty exit fearing he is late. Renshaw checks his phone periodically thereafter, pausing between brushstrokes. The family frequently travel together, with Renshaw plotting how to softly negotiate his agenda to scale mountains, visit lakesides and rise at dawn in the name of inspiring his art. His landscapes subtly question the viewer; is the patch of sunlight streaming through the clouds the storm passing to leave a perfect twilight or is it the last glow before the squall? Collectors have been charmed, dazzled and genuinely moved by the original paintings he produces. Renshaw admits, “I’m conscious I’ve been asked to do limited editions as well and though I’m not interested in producing prints I want to give collectors the opportunity to acquire something a little bit different.” I learn that a single limited edition work will be exclusively available at the exhibition, and a ‘Southern Romance’ may be on the horizon. Having worked as a professional artist for a decade and recently celebrating his fortieth birthday last November, I ask him about his ambitions; what would he like to achieve next? He smiles at me conspiratorially and replies, “the sky is not the limit’. David Renshaw will be in personal attendance at Gallery Rouge Harpenden on Saturday 20th September 4-7pm. ‘The Sky is Not the Limit’ opens at 10am that morning and continues daily to Tuesday 23rd, closing at 5.30pm. “I wanted to represent the idea of real romance and genuine love”, though the artist is keen to make clear that there is a reality to his positive message. Dark skies, precarious cliffs or crashing waves feature to temper the sentiment and prevent the series from representing the unattainable.

This good cause ...is in the bag On the eve of the Osprey London 4th Annual Handbag Amnesty, we take a look at how readers can help raise funds for a local good cause while receiving a personal style boost...
H
ertfordshire-based lifestyle brand Osprey London firmly believes that charity begins at home - or more accurately, in your wardrobe. This September sees the company’s 4th Annual Handbag Amnesty, helping to raise funds for local charity, Isabel Hospice. The idea is beautifully simple. Just donate a new or gently used handbag of any brand into the Osprey London Outlet Store on Woodcock Hill off Coopers Green Lane in St Albans and the charity then sells the items off to raise money for their work, offering palliative care and support to adults with life-limiting disease.
32 AUGUST2014
“We’ve helped raise funds in this way for a number of years now,” says Osprey London owner, Graeme Ellisdon. “Isabel Hospice is a locally based charity that we’re proud to support. By way of a thank you, everyone donating a bag receives a voucher entitling them to 20% off a new Osprey London bag in store. It’s a great way to recycle and get a bag you really love while helping support a really worthwhile cause.”
The Osprey London 4th Annual Handbag Amnesty runs from 1st September, so clear out those wardrobes and donate before 30th September. For more information, visit ospreylondon.com or call 01707 264332.

SAVOY
he Savoy’s unparalleled standards of luxury, comfort and service caused a sensation when it opened its doors in 1889. Richard D’Oyly Carte, the theatrical impresario who built The Savoy, wanted his hotel to set standards, rather than follow them, an ethos to which the hotel has proudly adhered throughout its history. 125 years later, The Savoy continues to set the highest of standards as it prepares to celebrate its longevity and success this August.
HISTORICAL TOURS OF THE SAVOY In celebration of The Savoy’s 125 years since its opening, historical tours with The Savoy’s archivist are available as part of the events and master classes calendar at 4pm on the first Monday of every month from 7th July 2014. Susan Scott will guide up to eight guests on an exclusive walk around the hotel, showing some of the most notable

Guests are invited to come into either bar to order ‘The Vote’ so that they may taste each cocktail and decide which one they think should be part of the celebrations and to go down in Savoy history. ‘The Vote’ features the American Bar’s ‘The 125 Punch’ and the Beaufort Bar’s ‘One and A Quarter’. Peter built his Savoy Palace on the river, and the name has been associated with the place ever since. Over 600 years later, impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte chose the location for a new theatre to stage the famous operettas written by his friends Gilbert and Sullivan. He decided to call his new building the Savoy Theatre, and the productions were known henceforth as the Savoy Operas. Gilbert and Sullivan were huge on both sides of the Atlantic, and D’Oyly Carte spent a lot of time producing their shows in America. This meant he could stay in some of the newest and best hotels, which impressed him so much with their amazing new technologies that he decided to build his own hotel back in London. The new Savoy on the river took five years to build and opened on 6th August 1889. It caused a sensation. This, the first true luxury hotel in London, was also the first to be lit by electricity. It had the first electric lifts, known as ‘ascending rooms’. Guest rooms were connected by speaking tube to the valet, maid and floor waiter – and to other parts of the hotel. The Savoy later became the first hotel to provide most of its rooms with private bathrooms en suite. The ‘Savoy bathroom’ became famous for its cascading shower and quick filling bath. Originally managed by Swiss hotelier César Ritz and Maitre Chef Auguste Escoffier, the hotel quickly became known for its glittering parties and glitterati guests. For more than a century, Savoy Court was the stopping point for the Rolls-Royces of royalty, prime ministers and Hollywood stars. The stars loved The Savoy. England’s own Vivien Leigh was first introduced to her future husband Laurence Olivier in the hotel’s Front Hall. From America came Hollywood greats such as Al Jolson, Errol Flynn and Katharine Hepburn and from France, Josephine Baker and Coco Chanel. Winston Churchill frequently lunched with his cabinet at the hotel during World War II, and attended his Savoy dining club, The Other Club, until his death in 1965. The new Elizabethan age saw a new generation of actors, film stars and politicians at The Savoy. Among the most glamorous: Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren and Marilyn Monroe. The Savoy swung into the 1960’s with guests ranging from Louis Armstrong, Marlon Brando and Jane Fonda to The Beatles and Bob Dylan. The Savoy’s prestigious reopening on 10th October 2010 included the addition of a stately 325-square metre Royal Suite featuring two bedrooms, a study, sitting room, dining room, master bathroom, dressing room and a master bedroom with a bespoke Savoir bed, the last word in style, luxury and discreet technology with stunning views of London and the River Thames. Truly a suite fit for a King.
SUNDAYS AT THE SAVOY Whether you choose to explore the world-class museums, attractions and shopping on the hotel’s doorstep, or just to indulge in the luxury of one the world’s most iconic hotels, make Sunday your favourite day of the week. Nine ‘signature suites’ were also styled after some of The Savoy’s most high profile guests including Maria Callas, Charlie Chaplin, Marlene Dietrich and Frank Sinatra. The suites contain artwork, literature, photographs and artifacts that evoke the time and spirit of the stars including the 12 pink roses in the Marlene Dietrich Suite that the actress always requested upon arrival. The Savoy brings to the 21st century its own style of quality, charm and originality, steeped in the character of London of which it is an essential part. Authentically celebrating its past, The Savoy is now also leading the present. Laura Ashley The Manor, Elstree (formerly known as The Edgwarebury Hotel) was bought in 2012 by Laura Ashley Ltd. Laura Ashley is one of the world’s best-loved fashion and home furnishings companies founded on a rich design heritage and traditional values of quality and originality, using prints and designs that evoke the English countryside. The Manor has undergone a beautiful Laura Ashley refurbishment, and stands on the site of an old Tudor house, which dates back to 1540. The hotel is ideally situated – only 25 minutes by rail from London and 9 miles by road, an ideal starting point to discover the surrounding area or a peaceful retreat to get away from it all.
The Hotel is set in 10 acres of gardens and natural woodland, with views overlooking Central London with the gardens initially planned by Mr W Innes Stuckey. In fact, some of the shrubs and rhododendrons are of the same age of the house itself, and the magnolia tree outside the Terrace Bar is especially impressive when in flower. Commander Tim Dawson BT, Royal Navy, was the first occupant of Edgwarebury House. It was turned into a private country club in the early 1930’s and remained so until the late 1960’s. When it was then operated as a hotel with a fine restaurant. In 1989 a new wing with conference facilities and bedrooms were added, moving the Hotel into its present status. The building's original features have been largely retained with several pieces throughout the hotel being of considerable age. The front door was originally part of the dungeons in Lewes Castle. As you enter the Hotel, your attention is immediately
drawn to the outstanding features of the fireplace with Italian carved columns supporting the ornate mantelpiece. It is understood that some of the wood was actually from ships involved in the battle of the Spanish Armada. The beams and cornerstones have been used to decorate the ceilings in reception. The wooden panels in our Beaufort Room are believed to date back to the 1600’s. In the bar, there is a particularly fine set of old Gothic panels made from ships lockers. The fire place over mantel features some fine carving which frames a medieval Spanish painting produced on a leather “canvas”. Many television programmes and films have featured the Hotel. In addition to this ‘claim to fame’ the Hotel can boast of having entertained famous celebrities, including Peter Sellers, Tom Cruise and John Cleese to mention a few.
The Manor Hotel houses a variety of rooms and suites available in either the main Tudor House or the contemporary wing. Guests can enjoy comfortable surroundings in one of our 49 en suite bedrooms. All of our rooms are individually themed and styled using Laura Ashley products. Our Junior Suites (Knightsbridge, Grosvenor and Victoria) and Mayfair Suite are also individually styled with Laura Ashley decor and feature unrivalled views of London. Each of these suites has a separate lounging area and en suite bathrooms. What better way to enjoy the style and home comforts of Laura Ashley than have traditional Afternoon Tea. The Manor offers a sumptuous afternoon tea serving within our Cavendish Restaurant from 3pm – 5.30pm daily. With our Laura Ashley fine bone china and homemade finger sandwiches, scones, cakes and tartlets you will truly enjoy your afternoon in peaceful surroundings.
Our exclusive Cavendish Restaurant offers a luxuriant fine dining experience, in a relaxed setting. The Cavendish menu has been prepared by our executive head chef using a fine selection of locally sourced ingredients to create a wonderful menu of Modern Day British dishes. We have an extensive wine list ranging from new world wines through to premier traditional old world varieties. The intimate Terrace Bar, also styled by Laura Ashley, enjoys panoramic views of London and the beautiful hotel gardens, creating a soothing atmosphere in which to relax and unwind. It is the ideal surrounding for enjoying afternoon tea or relaxing with a glass of champagne and watching the sun set over the London skyline. The Manor and its grounds are also the perfect venue for a number of functions such as business conferences, weddings and special occasions. Our Cavendish Suite boasts breath taking views over central London, decorated with neutral colours and its elegant atmosphere can hold small intimate weddings or larger weddings with up to 80 guests. The Manor also has five conference suites accommodating up to 80 delegates and offers complimentary Wi-Fi, airconditioned meeting rooms, wireless LCD projection screens and plenty of free parking. With our attractive day and 24 hour delegate packages and our exciting and creative catering options we can offer you the perfect location for meetings, seminars, conferences and team building events.

HEAD OF VW GROUP DESIGN CONFIRMS NEXT HYPERCAR IS ON ITS WAY. AND IT WILL BE ‘ART’
G
et ready. The head of Volkswagen Group design confirmed to TopGear.com that work on the next Bugatti model is well underway, with an expected launch in early 2016. Walter de Silva, who has headed up VW Group’s design since 2007, said “we’re working hard at Bugatti, but don’t worry, it’s coming. I cannot predict exactly, but at the end of 2015 or early 2016, we’ll see the new Bugatti.” De Silva wouldn’t confirm exactly what form this new car would take, but did concede that it “won’t be a Veyron replacement, it’ll be more than that. We’re investigating all avenues at the moment”. He remained confident, however, it will be something incredible. “For me, Bugatti is not a car,” de Silva said, “it is a piece of art. You have to understand this. You are in another range when you talk about Bugatti. No, forget that, you play in another league with Bugatti. When you buy a Bugatti, you buy a piece of art. It’s a story, and I would like to transfer the Bugatti idea in this way.” Tech-wise, again, de Silva remained tight-lipped, but did say how the company is putting “a lot of attention in the technology for the new

Bugatti. We’re developing a few different concepts at the moment, working together with the engineers and designers at the same time. Bugatti is something that in the end is a car, OK, but it’s a car that is a lifestyle. Bugatti is a part of your sensitivity, of your feeling,” de Silva added. So what do we know, then? Earlier this year, Bugatti boss Dr Wolfgang Schreiber told that the company would not build a ‘SuperVeyron’ or indeed a production version of the 2009 Galibier concept (pictured above). “We have talked many, many times about the Galibier, but this car will not come because it would confuse our customers,” Dr Schreiber told us. “With the Veyron, we placed Bugatti on top of all super sports car brands in the whole world. Everyone knows that Bugatti is the ultimate super sportscar.” Whatever this new car is, it will have to ‘redefine the benchmarks’, he added. And let us not forget, those benchmarks have been set just about as high as possible… Watch this space! www.bugatti.com

MASERATI M
CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF PRESTIGIOUS MOTORING
aserati officially celebrates the hundredth year of its history this year. The company was founded in Bologna, Italy, on December 1, 1914 and officially started operation on December 14, 1914. Alfieri Maserati and two of his brothers, Ettore and Ernesto, had an interest in mechanics and a love for speed. Though predominantly engaged in technical and commercial matters of car production, they all, at one point, raced the company’s cars. A fourth brother, Bindo, joined the company when Alfieri died in 1932 and a fifth brother, Mario, is credited with designing the famed Maserati logo, taking inspiration from the Neptune fountain in the historic centre of Bologna. Maserati produced its first car, the Tipo 26 racer, in 1926. It debuted with a victory in the 1926 Targa Florio, the first of many illustrious wins including two Indianapolis 500 victories, nine wins in Formula One and the 1957 F1 World Championship. In 1947 Maserati produced its first passenger car, the A6 Grand Tourer in 1947. In 1963, with the first generation Quattroporte, Maserati carved a new niche of sports luxury saloon. Over the past 100 years, Maserati has also produced some of the world’s fastest and most desirable sports and luxury road cars. The company have been running a series of activities to celebrate the centenary, culminating with the official Maserati gathering in Modena from 19th – 21st September 2014. About 250 Maserati models from all over the world will convene in Modena before embarking on a series of routes on scenic Italian roads tied to Maserati’s history, as well as many racetrack sessions. During the second half of next year, Modena will host a major exhibition of some of the most evocative models in Maserati’s history at the Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari in the city.
THE LATEST GENERATION OF THE QUATTROPORTE
52 AUGUST2014
This summer’s award-winning Silverstone Classic hosted a glittering line-up of special races, displays and parades to celebrate the centenary of Maserati, one of the most historic and hallowed motoring marques in the world. Working closely with Maserati GB and the Maserati Club UK, the 100th anniversary festivities at the Silverstone Classic were the biggest in the UK and one of the largest marque celebrations in the world. “This is a very special year for Maserati and a wonderful opportunity to look back through our history and celebrate the milestone achievements from the last ten decades,” said Peter Denton, Region Manager, Maserati North Europe. “The Silverstone Classic was the perfect occasion to bring together a full spectrum of iconic Maserati models, both past and present. Giving Maserati aficionados a unique chance to see so much of our history in action, as well as introducing a new generation of drivers to the models that have defined and continue to define the Maserati brand as we enter our next 100 years.” A dedicated Maserati Centennial website – www.maserati100.com – is live now to keep Maserati’s friends, fans, clients and collectors informed of all the activities planned to celebrate the 100th anniversary. There’s also a special centenary section on the company’s official website including details of the marque, from its establishment in 1914 to the present day, via memorable cars, famous names, a timeline of the most important events, the biggest projects, the innovations and the many achievements in motorsport. The content includes downloads, while visitors can also vote for their favourite Maserati of all time. A book to celebrate the centenary, Maserati – A Century of History, charts the company’s century along three main themes: company history, model range and motorsport.

Miller and Carter, Brookmans Park
A true taste of ‘The Steak Experience’ After frequenting the new steakhouse in Brookmans Park, I am becoming a firm (as they call it) ’Raving Fan’ of the restaurant. Soon to celebrate their 1st birthday in September the M&C Brookmans Park team have been going from strength to strength.
T
he Brookmans Park restaurant consists of 130 covers of varying table sizes and private dining for up to 20 split over two floors, boasting two beautiful and bright cocktail bars. Situated on the Great North Road, the steak house’s modern welcoming exterior, with its patio fire pit already blazing, is only boosted by the welcoming & warm greeting from the bar staff upon every arrival. The interior & decor of deep reds and chocolate brown feels sophisticated, indulgent and yet comfortable. Our host Mike explained the days steak special 24oz ribeye on the bone called a ‘tomahawk’ - a truly one of a kind steak experience. What makes it so special is the full 28 day ageing process giving an amazing rich flavour produced from the fat mouth watering ribeye marbling cut...ok I’m sold! Our waitress Lisa appears bright and ready, with some guidance and persuasion I’m talked into having a mojito cocktail. The rest of table follow suit and order a few other cocktails and wine. Our drinks arrive in a timely fashion looking fresh and tasty, The mojito is cool and sharp with a hit of alcohol and everyone seems pleased with their choices. Lisa is knowledgeable with the menu and able to answer and advise, again we go with her recommendation of the 16oz Chateau Briand Fillet to share with surf & turf and a side of BBQ ribs (good thing I’m hungry!). We order some sharing breads while we wait for the steak feast to come.
56 AUGUST2014
The atmosphere is energetic & social, all tables around us are talkative and happy. After about 30 minutes our ‘steak experience’ arrives. The steaks looked sublime and are cooked perfectly, rich & succulent topped with parsley butter (a standard for all the steaks). The side of ribs a must, had plenty of meat on the bone. The side dishes that come as standard for all the steak meals include a fresh, moist salad wedge with choice of topping, crispy baked onion loaf, seasoned fries and multiple steak sauces. Along with the Mac ’n’ cheese side I chose, this really was a feast to savour. House manager Derrick, politely visited our table to see how we were doing. His enthusiasm and delight at our menu choice was refreshing and his acknowledgment of his teams hard work was uplifting. To finish the evening we managed to squeeze in the rich and lovely sharing dessert and coffees. I indulged with a Baileys hot chocolate... the diet can wait! The final triumph was the genuine farewells from our waitress Lisa and host Mike with all of the bar staff that finished our perfect night. With Miller & Carter’s tag line being ‘For The Love Of Steak’.... Brookmans Park you deliver in abundance! I’ve never liked slippers. But then this winter, something happened. I fell in love with a pair of faux furry boots. Running cosily
right up to my ankle, they made forgetting about my feet for months far too easy. Once the weather warmed up and I pulled out my open toe shoes and sandals, I looked down at my forlorn feet and realised some serious SOS needed to happen before baring them to the world. A bright polish wasn’t enough, I needed a major pedicure. Elemis’ Sole Delight Foot Treatment aims to soothe sore, rough, dry feet and make them look exposable again. The treatment’s available at various locations nationwide, but I headed to The House of Rush in London’s Piccadilly, where I was eased into a reclining leather black throne, while the therapist removed the remains of my nails polish and filed and buffed my nails. She then filed my feet, focusing on specific areas of dryness like my heels and high-heel-attacked balls of my feet. A tiny amount of Elemis Lime and Ginger Salt Scrub Glow was mixed in with Frangipani Monoi Body Oil, which made the scrub feel luxurious rather than scratchy. My feet were then soaked in a warm tub of creamy Skin Nourishing Milk Bath and patted dry. The therapist began cuticle work, making my toes look immediately more presentable - something I always neglect in DIY pedis. The Frangipani Monoi Body Oil was then used again for a luxurious foot massage, which felt like it unknotted all the tension from my soles. As a finishing touch, my toes were painted with an Essie One Of A Kind coral polish and massaged with Exotic Cream Moisturising Mask, right up to my shins. As a celebration, I went out and bought some new toe-baring sandals. Slipper boots, you’re officially in retirement these feet look too good to hide. Elemis Sole Delight Foot Treatment with Pedicure, prices vary but a 70-minute treatments start from around £40-70, available nationwide www.elemis.com Buy It Now Superdrug is looking mighty fine for 50. This pale pink light-reflecting cream highlighter is pretty sheer but can be built up for a more intense colour. You can blend under cheekbones for contouring but I preferred to use the stick to create a healthy glow on the apples of my cheeks.
A gorgeous colour for summer, this peach-tone cream blush applies easily and the slightly darker colour makes it great for sculpting. The formulation blends easily but stays put all day.
I loved the rose coral colour and it has a matte finish so there’s not a hint of shimmer. The high-impact colour means you just need one sweep, blended with fingertips for instantly sculpted cheeks. As a bonus, it doubles up as a lippy too.

TAKE THE PLUNGE WHEN IT COMES TO MAKING A DECISION THE HEAD OFTEN RULES THE HEART, AND IN THE MAJORITY OF CASES WE ARE FOUR TIMES MORE LIKELY TO MAKE A DECISION BY WEIGHING UP THE PROS AND CONS, THAN GO WITH OUR INSTINCTS.
W
hen it comes to making a decision the head often rules the heart, and in the majority of cases we are four times more likely to make a decision by weighing up the pros and cons, than go with our instincts. Heels or flats? We make tons of quick decisions every day, but others we linger over for days. According to research commissioned by swimming pool company Origin Leisure, we find it easy to make really big decisions, but then agonise over the smaller details. We trust our gut for life-changing decisions, but ironically we then sweat the small stuff. In fact, over a third of us admit to knowing instantly that our current home was ‘the one’, but it then often takes us days, weeks or even years to decide on improvements such as installing a new kitchen or adding a conservatory. When it comes to home improvement, it doesn’t come much more luxurious than an indoor swimming pool, and while it’s important to consider all the details, the research showed that spending too much time agonising over the decision can be counterproductive. Gary Taylor of Origin Leisure said: “In our 30 year experience we’ve found that people wish they’d spent less time deliberating and more time enjoying the fruits of their decision making. If it will make you and your family happy, just get on, 68 AUGUST2014
listen to your instinct and enjoy it!” For anybody wanting to take the plunge with the ultimate home improvement, here are the answers to the key questions to help you make your decision. HOW MUCH IS IT GOING TO COST? e cost depends on a multitude of factors, from the size and shape of the pool, right down to the choice of materials. An indoor pool can cost from £135,000 to £250,000 and upwards, depending on your design. A good place to start is to decide on a budget and ask your swimming pool company to tailor the design to the amount you’d like to spend. WHAT ARE THE RUNNING COSTS? Don’t forget to factor in the weekly, monthly and yearly expenses for heating, chemicals and maintenance. e ongoing costs will depend entirely on the design of your pool, how it’s used by your family, and your choice of heat source. An experienced swimming pool company will advise you on the ongoing costs and offer advice on keeping them as low as possible. HOW ECO FRIENDLY IS A SWIMMING POOL? Whether or not the swimming pool will be eco friendly is an important factor to some homeowners. If you’re concerned about the environmental impact of the pool, or simply want to lower running costs, eco models are available. Origin Leisure’s
H OUS E & GA R D E N Eco Pool House incorporates the very latest building materials for energy efficiency to reduce running costs once the pool is complete. DO I NEED PLANNING PERMISSION? Adding an Origin swimming pool to your home has never been easier! Changes to permitted development rights mean you may not require planning permission at all - even if planning permission was previously denied. Use a specialist swimming pool company to guide you through the procedure, advising you on the necessary steps to take, which will speed up the process significantly. HOW LONG WILL THE PROJECT TAKE? e length of time it takes to install a swimming pool depends entirely on the design; the size, shape and type of swimming pool will vary the timescale from project to project. It’s best to allow at least 20 weeks for the pool to be completed. WHAT SWIMMING POOL DESIGN IS BEST FOR ME AND MY FAMILY? While pool houses were previously simple pine chalets, today indoor swimming pool design has evolved and we now expect the same style, quality and finish in the pool house as we would in our own homes. But, with so much choice it’s no wonder we’re left scratching our heads when making a decision. Origin Leisure has designed a range of popular indoor swimming pool models that can be tailored for you. WHO WILL OVERSEE EACH STAGE OF THE PROJECT? It helps to talk to a swimming pool company that can oversee the whole project from start to finish. is way, you will have one point of contact and don’t need to project manage any of the design or building process. HOW MUCH MAINTENANCE IS REQUIRED? e after care for a swimming pool is easy, but for those who’d like a helping hand, the experts at Origin Leisure also offer a full maintenance service, giving you as much or as little help as you need to maintain the upkeep of your pool. THE BENEFITS OF A HOME SWIMMING POOL TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY While taking the plunge may seem daunting, making the decision brings measurable benefits. A swimming pool from Origin Leisure provides new ways of having fun, spending precious time together as a family, even making a ‘staycation’ seem more appealing. e additional space is perfect for entertaining and socialising with friends and family, and the design can include a kitchen, seating or bar. Access to a pool right on your doorstep means it’s easy to swim every day in the privacy of your own home, either to maintain a healthy lifestyle or simply as a space to relax. Whatever your decision, the experts at Origin Leisure are available to help create your home swimming pool. With over 30 years experience creating beautiful domestic swimming pools, the company manages every stage of the project from start to finish, giving you the confidence and freedom to enjoy your decision. BOWLES & WYER
Your Garden: The Most Forgotten Room of Your House T
he housing market crash led many people to stay in the homes they were in and improve them or even extend, rather than moving up the property ladder. Even now as the market steadily improves, we are seeing an increase in extensions and renovations. Extending a property normally makes one think about an additional bedroom or maybe a larger kitchen diner – the most forgotten extra room we have at home is our garden. Improving your garden is a cost-effective way of extending your home. You will argue, no doubt, that in this country you cannot spend time in your garden all year round or use it like you would a room. But this all comes down to design. If designed correctly, there is no reason why a garden cannot be used in all seasons as an extra room to your house, whilst adding significant value to your property. Often a garden will be landscaped according to what is already there. This is where a good and a great landscape designer differ. The brief is everything; understanding how you want to use your garden and interpreting this information to deliver imaginative solutions. Bowles & Wyer is an award-winning landscape company, based on the Herts/Bucks border, who believe that successful design is distinguished by imagination and intuition; finding solutions from unexpected sources. Partner, John Wyer, explains “We transform our client’s ideas into living, responsive landscapes”. Bowles & Wyer offer professional design services, with every designer trained to at least degree level and possessing vast experience and expertise. Whilst the design is hugely important, there are three principal phases to consider whether you are planning an extension or transforming a garden: design, build and finish (or in gardening terms, aftercare). Key to the transformation, is continuity of workmanship. If you were adding a new room to your house, the architect would be involved at each stage to ensure the build reflected the design and was not misinterpreted in any way. This continuity of craftsmanship is also paramount when transforming your garden. Bowles & Wyer have extensive in-house technical experience and knowhow, and can therefore look after the ‘build’ phase of your project without subcontracting the work or you needing to find a contractor to build the design. Bowles & Wyer offer garden design, build and aftercare to ensure the design meets your requirements and captures your imagination; the build successfully interprets the design and is of the highest quality; and the aftercare ensures longevity of the project. Many companies will offer only design or one other element, but at Bowles & Wyer the importance and ability to see the project all the way through is what differentiates the company. In the words of famous landscape gardener, Humphrey Repton: “No work can be so well completed as under the eye of the person who designs the improvement”. So do not forget your garden – it can extend your home, put value on your property and offer enjoyment all year round. Bowles & Wyer - garden design, garden build & garden aftercare.
