The last two flying Lancaster bombers flew over North Weald Airfield twice on their way to public displays recently. Lancasters are probably best known for the Dambuster raids during the Second World War. The Lancaster crew phoned North Weald Airfield beforehand both times and so the operations team was able to alert people on social media so that as many people as possible were able to witness this unique pair. It was a rare treat for all to see. The first flypast on Thursday 14 August had to dodge some thunderstorms in the vicinity. The second on Saturday 16 August, however, had perfect flying conditions and moody evening light as the two aircraft flew to Old Warden for a Flying Proms display before returning to RAF Coningsby. These were marvellous opportunities to see these two iconic aircraft flying together. The Memorial Flight was based at RAF North Weald from February to May 1958 just before the Airfield closed and close links with them have been retained ever since. With the summer now drawing to a close, we’re getting ready for and looking forward to a busy few months at Valentines. We bring you events at one of Essex’s hidden gems - Valentines Mansion & Gardens. The Epping Society has donated a collection of approximately 150 8" x 10" monochrome photographs of street views of buildings in Epping and Coopersale to Epping Forest District Museum. The photos, taken in the early 1970s by Stuart Turner LRPS, form part of his bequest to the Society. The majority of his pictures were left to English Heritage but he wanted these to be kept in the local area. As well as these photographs the Society is donating around 20 postcards and smaller prints as well as approximately 100 colour prints of Epping High Street c.2003. The photos will be looked after for future generations to enjoy. We hope that you had a very enjoyable Summer break and look forward to seeing you again in October.

Lancaster bombers
T
he last two flying Lancaster bombers flew over North Weald Airfield twice on their way to public displays recently. Lancasters are probably best known for the Dambuster raids during the Second World War. As part of the transits between displays, the two Lancasters have flown over the Airfield twice so far. One of the Lancaster bombers, named Vera, is visiting the UK from Canada. The other, named Thumper, is based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, where both are currently based as part of The Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (RAFBBMF). The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum Avro Lancaster has been appearing with the RAFBBMF’s Lancaster in many air displays and fly pasts throughout the summer. It will not be returning home until 22 September and so there is still plenty of time to see the very rare sight of both in action at various locations across the country. Something to be highly recommended! If you are unable to catch these two amazing aircraft, then you will be able to see an RAFBBMF Spitfire and Hurricane, which will be displaying at the North Weald Airfield Community Day on Sunday 7 September at 3pm. The day is called ‘Wings over Europe, Remembering D-Day‘. The event is open from 10am to 5pm (with arena displays from 11.00) and there will be something for the whole family to enjoy, as well as the aircraft enthusiasts among us. There will be charity stalls, static aircraft, animals and birds from Gemma’s Farm to name but a few. Entry is ÂŁ5 per person, with free entertainment all day in the ‘Adventure Corner’ for children and free parking. The day is raising funds for Royal British Legion and Herts Essex Air Ambulance. 8

Coopersale Hall School’s annual Prize Day to celebrate another incredibly busy year was given an extra dose of glamour to the delight of the pupils, parents and staff. International model and photographer Penny Lancaster joined up with friend, European, Commonwealth and World Swimming Champion Mark Foster to speak to the school and give out the prizes to many lucky prizewinners. Headmistress Kaye Lovejoy said, “the children were very excited to have Penny and Mark at Prize Day. Mark told us about the many hours of hard work and training that made him into such an accomplished athlete, and brought some of his impressive hoard of medals to pass around. As Mark said, despite their collective numerous accolades they both may be remembered more for their star turns on Strictly Come Dancing!” Prize Day took place just after a team of school inspectors arrived to inspect Coopersale Hall as part of the school’s normal cycle of inspections. The report has only just been published and shows that the school managed to achieve ‘Outstanding’ in all areas. The Inspection Report is available to read on the school’s newly-launched website. Group Managing Principal Matthew Hagger commented, “we are all delighted to read the numerous comments that support and acknowledge the many positive achievements Coopersale Hall has made in recent years as we were judged to be ‘Outstanding’ all areas. With only a few days’ notice, this type of inspection provides us with a useful evaluation of our provision as it reports on current practice without the ability to put in any special preparation. This means that we were

inspected through a snapshot of the school as it normally is, as seen through a team of independent and highly experienced professionals. We continue to strive for the best education possible for our pupils, and we are confident that we will be able to build on this outstanding report and take the Coopersale Hall School to an even higher phase in its continuing development.” It isn’t only the termtimes that have been busy, with an extensive programme of summer holiday activities to keep children from across the Oak-Tree Group busy over the 7-week holiday. Children from 2½ to 11 spent several weeks in courses such as multi-sports (6 weeks), drama (2 weeks) and Early Years (3 weeks). Matthew Hagger said, “our parents were very grateful that we were able to offer this service to break up the long summer holiday. The children had fun and kept active, while the parents were able to work or take a well-deserved break!”. Coopersale Hall’s next Open Morning is on Friday 10 October at 9.15am. LONDON’S ONLY DIAMOND STRUCTURE SCHOOL The School’s unique diamond structure means that their 1,300 boys and girls are taught in single-sex classes in the same grounds. At four, boys and girls are taught together in the Pre-Preparatory School before moving into single-sex classes at seven. From 11-16, boys and girls continue to be taught separately before joining a co-educational Sixth Form at 16. Life beyond the School gates, however, is not single-sex, so while boys and girls are taught separately, they enjoy lunch breaks and participate in co-curricular activities together. Epping Society photographic archive donated to epping Forest district MuseuM
T
he Epping Society has donated a collection of approximately 150 8" x 10" monochrome photographs of street views of buildings in Epping and Coopersale to Epping Forest District Museum. The photos, taken in the early 1970s by Stuart Turner LRPS, form part of his bequest to the Society. The majority of his pictures were left to English Heritage but he wanted these to be kept in the local area. As well as these photographs the Society is donating around 20 postcards and smaller prints as well as approximately 100 colour prints of Epping High Street c.2003. The photos will be looked after for future generations to enjoy. Stuart Browning Turner was was born in London in 1904. He attended Ardingly College in West Sussex and started his working life as a filing clerk with an insurance firm in the City of London. In 1929 he joined the British Xylonite Company, the first British firm to successfully manufacture plastic material in commercial quantities. During World War Two the firm worked on Bexoid, a material that replaced scarce alloy that was normally used for fittings in wartime planes. By 1950, he was a director of the company. Between the 1960s and the 1980s Stuart compiled an extensive collection of photographic prints and postcards showing harbours, mills, viaducts, quays, an oast house and a tin mine. This material is to be found in the English Heritage Industrial Collections. Stuart lived most of his married life in Beulah Road, Epping. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society in 1977. As a founding member of The Epping Society, Stuart used his photographic skills to make an extensive record of Epping and the surrounding area. These photographs show Epping as it was only 40 years ago and the loss or significant change of many valued buildings is apparent. More encouraging is the number of historic and attractive buildings and places in the town which have been preserved or even improved. The Epping Society is mainly concerned about the future of Epping but recognises the value of records of how it once was to help them decide whether changes are beneficial and to learn how damaging they can be when misjudged. The Epping Society pays tribute to Stuart Turner for his skill and for taking the trouble to record the town when he did; to the Committee of the Society for preserving the material for so long and to current Committee member Charlie Geddes who co-ordinated with Barry Orlek to sort, index and prepare the material. They are proud to have ensured this archive goes to a suitable home at Epping Forest District Museum, where the public and researchers will be able to examine these images in the years ahead. They will also be displayed, together with a biography of the photographer, on the Epping Society website www.eppingsociety.org.uk The Epping Society would love to hear from any local residents who have high quality identifiable photographs suitable for museum archives and/or website display. he holiday period is over and it’s back to work. For some, now is the time to break free of the employed status and into fresh and new horizons. Establishing your own business can be very exciting but it can also be daunting; especially if you have financial responsibilities such as family, dependents or other commitments. So - where do you begin? Please write down the following: a Why do you want to set-up a business? b What are your goals for: i 6 months ii 12 months iii 3 years iv 5 years. For set aims and a timeline: a Analyse your competitors. What’s your USP? Your mission statement? b Are you better and different to your competitors? Why should your target audience choose you? c WHO ARE YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE? Now type up these answers onto an elegant sheet of paper and frame it! You’ll be looking at this list many times over the coming months, years… Answering these questions is not a five minute exercise but the time invested could probably ascertain whether your business fails or succeeds. Next step and with consideration for all the questions so far: a Looking to the near and long-term future, how would you like to present your image and branding to the world? b What logo will carry you through to the fruition of all your goals? What’s your memory hook – how do you want people to remember you, like you, trust you, WANT TO DO BUSINESS WITH YOU? c Consider what you need to get started: i Business cards and logo?

ii Website? iii How to drive traffic to your website? iv Where will you network? v How will you maximise the benefits of social media? vi Who can help you and why? vii Building up your database? viii How will you maintain regular contact? So when considering your budgets, please do not invest everything into your website. There are other important factors which are essential for the overall plan. Getting this right at a preliminary stage is essential for long-term success. Most start-ups do not have much capital however money wisely spent can ensure a healthy ROI (return on investment) on your expenditure. Finally and most importantly, look for support and help from family and friends; positive people who share your enthusiasm and want you to succeed. Ask people for their experiences and seek their advice. You may not agree with everything they tell you but at least you will be able to learn from others’ mistakes rather than from your own. It can be scary but running your own business is one of the most wonderful experiences imaginable. Having the independence to ascertain how you spend your time. And although you will probably find you are working longer hours than if you had an employer, you know that all the rewards - will be yours. Being your own boss merits far more than just being good at the services you offer or the products you sell. A
t this point, most of us have returned from our holidays. Whether a destination that merited a train, car or plane, it’s good to be home and back on our own terra firma. So in response to all those who say with respect to life’s experiences: “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey!” Well that isn’t always true when it comes to holidays… 1.GOING TO THE AIRPORT. SATNAV or theaa.com erroneously advises that the journey to Luton airport is approximately 1 hour. So we set off allowing 1.5 hours or even 2 hours. We excitedly go onto the M25 (relevant to most of the readership). First warning sign has to be all those brake lights on the cars in front. Traffic slows down… traffic stops. Looking at the trusted SATNAV it is still only indicating ‘3 mins delay’… but you’re there, rooted to the spot for 5…10…15…20 minutes and counting. Every stationery minute on the M25 feels like an hour and you begin calculating driving at 120 mph to make up for lost time if only the traffic would move. Excitement turns into anger. Anticipation turns into frustration. Always ensure plenty of time when going to the airport, especially if taking the North Circular towards Heathrow, M1 to Luton, M11 to Stansted and as for Gatwick; you’re always guaranteed to be sitting in traffic due to an accident at Clacket Lane! 2.BEING AT THE AIRPORT So you’re there. You’ve arrived. Trying to turn tension into calm and back into that holiday frame of mind. Then you break out into a sweat and panic when you try to remember unpacking the luggage. Did you lock the car? The thought of flying away somewhere and your car’s unlocked. Heading back and checking… Then running back to the airport as time is now getting tight and you haven’t been through Security... 3.SECURITY Travelling used to be easier before 9/11. Now the security process is arduous and there’s nothing worse than being in that long queue, whilst somebody in front is

bellowing down their mobile phone. They haven’t read the sign about the bag and fluids, you know they won’t take their shoes off at the right time, their laptops haven’t been removed from their hand luggage and even worse, you’re privy to their inane conversation about the weather at their destination as compared to London. 4.WEAK PEOPLE WHO HAVE WHEELS ON HAND LUGGAGE. These little cases which don’t really merit a Mr/s Universe to carry, are accidents on wheels – just waiting to happen. Carted around the airport like a pet on a lead, these little cases are hardly visible (especially when you’re steering your own luggage) and are invariably behind the traveller, who is oblivious to the potential hazard their case/pet is causing.
5.PASSENGERS WHO DON’T TURN OFF ELECTRONIC DEVICES You’re in the plane. The engines are revving up, slowly the plane is making its way towards the runway. Passenger announcement: “Please turn off your electronic devices as this can cause interference.” The person next to you is talking or texting. The plane gathers speed, not a steward/hostess in sight and take-off is imminent. They’re chatting away and you have visions of the plane crashing as systems are intercepted by the mobile’s signal. You tell them (politely)

that we’re all going to die because they’re on the phone! Their reply contains expletives and nothing particularly enlightening. Then you have to sit next to them for as many hours as necessary, until you both reach your destination! Some of the impressive vehicles on show will include a 1954 Austin Healey (100/4), a 1970 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow Series 1 and a 1968 Jaguar MKII. At the end of September (Saturday 27 and Sunday 28), visitors can celebrate all things apple at the annual Audley Apple Festival. Everyone from the youngest Pippin to the oldest Granny Smith can enjoy bobbing and weaving to trapping and tasting. They can

gobble down the golden delicious treats in the tea room, see how the Victorians would have had a fruity time in the service wing, and enjoy pressing – and tasting – royal galas in the garden. The following month, the skies above the impressive grounds will play centre stage to graceful hawks, elegant owls and fearsome falcons in flight as expert falconers demonstrate the art of training, exercising and hunting with birds at Gothic Falconry on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 October. During these magnificent displays, spectators can hear revealing tales of gothic tragedy and superstition whilst these amazing birds swoop overhead. Little horrors can then scare themselves silly
over Halloween and October Half Term with Frightening Fairytales and Spooky Stories as they delve into the dark world of the Brothers Grimm and reveal the terrifying truth behind the bedtime stories children over the years have grown to love, running daily from 27 to 31 October. For the older members of the family (over 16s only) there is the chance to enter the spooky spirit world at A Victorian Séance on 31 and 1 November. This theatrical event will plunge visitors into the Victorian fascination of the supernatural as the characters attempt to contact the after life on a tour of the house after hours. They are dying to meet everyone! A highlight of the events calendar is A Victorian Christmas on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 November and Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 December. The nursery suite of rooms on the second floor have been returned to their former glory providing a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the eight children, their governess, nursemaids and tutors. Visitors are able to experience the rooms as they were intended with a host of toys to play with and items to explore as they delve into the story of
childhood in a Victorian country house. Also previously unseen is the Coal Gallery, which demonstrates the mid-19th century when this part of the house would have been a hive of activity as coal was shovelled and water boiled. Bunkers filled with coal, cupboards stocked with soap and candles, and soundscapes have been introduced to create a sense of bustle. There’s more to see in other parts of the house too – including improved presentation in the State Rooms, a piano in the library for visitors to play and a roaring fire reinstated in the Great Hall. For others, the actual investment in dental care is a reason for not having the ideal recommended treatment. In this article, I will look at some of the important areas connected with the cost of dental treatment. WHAT AFFECTS THE FEES A DENTIST CHARGES? The business cost of running a dental practice in London is at least 60% before tax! The high costs of running a modern private dental practice are one of the main reasons why dental professional fees are perceived to be high sometimes. The other variables that affect the cost of dental treatment include: ● Difficulty of the treatment ● Time taken ● Skill and experience of the dentist ● Laboratory costs What is the best way of keeping dental fees to a minimum? The answer to this is quite simple – PREVENT problems. This may sound obvious, but many people don’t actually follow this advice carefully. Helpful treatments can include hydrating dermal fillers, derma pen stamp, skin peeling and laser Rolling Scars – This type of scarring is found more often on your body than your face. This can cause skin, which looks healthy on the surface, to be depressed and sunken in damaged areas, commonly seen on the back and chest area. They are created when your body overproduces tissue with which to heal an acne lesion, this results in raised lumps that can be red or pink in colour. Hyperpigmentation – Sometimes, after your acne has cleared, you are left with red, brown, purple, pink or black areas of skin. This is not scarring and is completely normal. When acne is severe it can disturb the pigmentation of the skin in this way. Your skin colour will often return to its normal pigmentation within a year but can sometimes require treatment if the pigmentation does not fade. First things first, decide on what theme or era you would like your home to be. Some fun ideas for different decades are the kitchy 50’s, the mod look of the 60’s, or the bohemiam look of the 70’s.

retro style usually has a fun, lively feel to it, with bright colours, wild designs and an overall sense of “flair�. Just think back to the fabrics and textures during the 60’s and you’ll immediately get a sense of where your decor needs to go to truly capture the essence of retro style. Because retro-style requires such a bold approach, it also requires a certain personality to pull it off. There’s nothing laid-back or casual about retro-style decorating. On the contrary, it is loud, busy and most definitely “funky�. Trying to furnish your entire home strictly from a specific era can become quite tricky, so you could mix the old with new, and accessorise with items that complement the era you are looking to portray. So, how can you bring retro style decorating into your home? Let’s take a look at some common elements of this energising decorating style: Colors in Retro Decors One of the easiest ways to give a room a retro feel is to choose retro colours. Fortunately, that’s not hard to do. Avocado green is by far the most popular retro colour choice, followed closely by mustard yellow and combinations of black, white and red. In addition, purple and hot pink both make a great addition to your retro decor. Don’t be surprised to find items that have a little of everything, with mixes of bright orange, green, indigo blue, and yellow on one single piece. Tie-dyed fabrics, checkered patterns, and elaborate paisley prints were also a trademark of the era.

Music helped shape this decade as rock music mixed with disco fever, disco balls and disco dancing hit the groovy scene. Many 70’s homes were light, airy and free in reflection of the movements that were happening; activism, freedom and self-expression. There are many ways to integrate elements of 1970’s decor into your home without over doing it – there is the traditional retro style, or you may prefer for a more modern contemporary retro theme. Get the 70’s look: Colour: Building your colour scheme around the hippie, ethnic style which would give you a more neutral palette of earth tones i.e. beige, sage green, sand, brown, mustard, burnt orange, navy, plum, aubergine, wine and deep shades of purple. Brown and cream with orange and avocado were the most popular colour choices of the seventies. Of course there is the disco vibe, additional colours of silver and gold that you could fuse into your design ideas. Walls: Look for a fabulous wallpaper which you could add to your room or use to make a stunning mural. Vinyl wallpaper was popular during the 70’s however today there are many incredible designs that are paper or fabric backed. Patterned fabrics also make great murals so enjoy looking through lots of ranges before you make your final selection. They are a real nostalgic look and could be used in a very modern way within your design.
Retro Style Furniture Retro style furniture has an abstract feel to it, with each piece almost fighting for the limelight as the focal point of the room. Sofas are broad and elongated with multi-colored throw pillows for an added dash of colour. Shiny chrome barstools with bright red seats draw your attention to a diner-style kitchen while Mitt chairs and puzzle-piece ottomans provide unique seating for guests.
Decor: Look for some tubular chrome or polished steel pieces of furniture to add to your look. Bean bags are also a great addition. Super comfy! Retro style interiors have lots of big pattern so mix and match fabrics i.e. upholstery to sofas, scatter cushions and curtains. It is daring to have lots of pattern in the one room however, you can combine them as long as you link in tones so that your design look tasteful.
The Seventies retro style interiors and design is considered very trendy these days. It is an exciting blend of hippie, beatnik, and boho chic with the funky kitsch designs from the sixties.
Lighting: Pendant lamps make a great retro centrepiece in the room, or you could go for dim retro lamps around the room, creates a relaxing mood in the room!
