provide a broader range of specialist services to an increasing number of local life-limited children. e hospice works with children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions who are unlikely to reach adulthood. Lloyd’s fundraising challenge began in September last year as he set about raising £10,000 for the

work of Haven House hospice. Celebrating 10 years in business BathWorks partnered with the hospice which was celebrating 10 years of caring and the challenge to raise £10,000 was created. FOLLOWING ON FROM HALLOWEEN ON 31ST OCTOBER IS BONFIRE NIGHT ON 5TH NOVEMBER. A GREAT WEEK FOR FUN AND FIREWORKS.

or those not familiar with the history of Bonfire Night and to quickly précis, Guy Fawkes, (Guido Fawkes) was born on 13 April 1570 and died on 31 January 1606. A soldier who had fought in Spain (hence changing his name to Guido) he sided with Catholic Spain against the Protestant Dutch reformers. He tried to instigate support for a Catholic rebellion in England but was unsuccessful. Subsequent to his introduction to Robert Catesby, together with other conspirators such as John Wright, omas Wintour, omas Percy, Robert Keyes, omas Bates, Robert Wintour, Christopher Wright, John Grant, Ambrose Rookwood, Sir Everard Digby and Francis Tresham, collectively they devised a plot to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of England's Parliament on 5 November 1605, thereby killing all present and also assassinating King James I of England and VI of Scotland. eir intention was to replace the King with a Catholic monarch. Having secured a lease for the cellar underneath the House of Lords, Guy Fawkes (as a former soldier) was given the responsibility of guarding the explosives, but the authorities had received an anonymous ‘tip-off ’ and searched Westminster Palace in the early hours of November 5th, 1605 and found him there with the thirty-six barrels of gunpowder. He was subsequently questioned (tortured!) – then sentenced to death by being hung, drawn and quartered. However he jumped off the scaffold, broke his neck and therefore spared himself this most heinous demise. To celebrate the foiling of this dastardly plan - every year, we have a Bonfire Night. Some fires will include the burning of an effigy (named appropriately Guy) but generally, it’s a firework display. he Oak-Tree Schools have seen more and more families to choose their brand of excellent independent education over recent years. With Open Day season here again, Coopersale Hall, Normanhurst and Oaklands have been preparing to open their doors to welcome the many hopeful prospective families looking for the best education for their children. “Parents value the opportunity to talk to our current pupils as they give an honest and impartial view of what school is really like”, comments Kaye Lovejoy, Headmistress of Epping’s Coopersale Hall School. “In my presentation I give a taste of the quality of our education from the earliest ages of 2½ with our ‘Outstanding’ recent inspection report up to our intensive preparation for senior schools at 11”. At Normanhurst School in North Chingford, Headmistress Claire Osborn enjoys talking to families about the how the school caters for all ages from 2½ to 16. She comments, “e parents and children who visit our Open events are very impressed with the quality of our education. My presentation focuses on the many opportunities available to all ages including the strong academic teaching, extra-curricular clubs and GCSE results. e Head Boy and Head Girl also speak about their passion for Normanhurst and how much they enjoy their learning. Members of our Parents’ Association support the events by giving useful advice while handing out refreshments. Cheryl Macnair, Headmistress of Oaklands School in Loughton, is used to talking to groups of parents bringing newborn babies to the Open Mornings, as registration for places often happens at the earliest possible age. She explains, “on Open Morning we don’t make many changes to our normal working day as it is important for parents to get an impression of the school as it really is and not as a series of showcase events that some bigger senior schools prepare”.

LEISURELY WALKS OR RIDES

rying to get back into a routine after the summer holiday is not easy. e time from October to December is just a few months before everything shuts down again for Christmas and the new year break. Yet so much is expected in this brief period of time… For me personally, taking time away from the office actually helps to be more productive when working full pelt. No cliché intended but when you’re busy – ‘It’s hard to see the forest for the trees’… and when it gets like this and I’m under a lot of pressure – it’s the forest and trees that help to make the picture clearer. A good walk, large intakes of fresh air and away from the computer helps all the seemingly floating problems to sink and fall into their respective boxes; it all makes sense and heralds a positive move forwards in the right direction. Loughton and Epping are linked by Epping Forest. e forest is so dense it’s actually more affiliated to nature than its residents with more than ten trees per Loughtonian! Generally the forest is

16 OCTOBER2014

enjoyed more by horse-riders, ramblers and dog owners and for most of us, the road is mainly used as the link between these two areas. Yet the journey could be more beneficial than the destination. A brisk walk is good exercise, pure air, exhilarating landscape and a sense of back to nature and being remote and at peace within a natural environment, despite the not-so-distant hum of traffic on the M25. I recommend comfortable shoes or boots as the forest with its mostly clay soils, can get rather wet. Perhaps a walking stick to part the brambles as you walk through; a light umbrella in case it rains and the obligatory warm clothing. I have a wonderful memory of this stretch of road during a particularly cold and snowy Christmas evening. Driving carefully along the road, I was listening to Mozart and felt as if, I really was in the depths of some Austrian retreat. Turning off the music and opening the windows to allow some cold, refreshing air into the car, for the first time, I was fixated on the forest’s nocturnal sights and sounds: the leaves’ rustling, the call of the vixen, then

Michelle Harris a frightened doe suddenly appeared on the road – afraid and still, her bright eyes staring at the approaching headlights. en she darted back into the forest’s sanctuary and was safe from us human intruders… A sense of sinister foreboding as the road was again dark; allegedly the forest has its own nocturnal secrets… A source of endless fascination - delightful during the day, beautiful yet eerie during the night. Great War Exhibition

AT LOWEWOOD MUSEUM MARKS CENTENARY OF THE START OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR

n Saturday 13 September 2014, a new exhibition opened at Lowewood Museum, marking the centenary of the start of the First World War. e display will explore how the Borough of Broxbourne was affected from 1914 to 1918. e exhibition, entitled ‘e Great War: Home Life and Service during the 1914-18 War’, first takes visitors back to 1914, revealing how the War was met with initial excitement by many, with huge numbers volunteering to enlist in Kitchener’s army. e exhibition goes on to show how this initial excitement quickly declined as the horrors of war began to show. By 1915, Britain was on full alert as the menacing zeppelin entered the skies. By the end of 1915, 37 tonnes of bombs had been dropped over Britain and the Borough of Broxbourne did not escape them. For the first time in history Britain faced a world war, with threats from land, air and sea. From the top to the bottom of society, people stepped up to help with the war effort. is exhibition reveals just this, showing how local people adapted and did their bit, from the role of local women and the Special Constabulary, to the establishment of make-shift hospitals like Rosehill in Hoddesdon. Exhibits include a collection of diaries written by Stephen Warner, the great grandson of John Warner of Hoddesdon. During the War, Stephen served initially as a Private in the Royal Army Medical Corps, but after a time there he felt that he could not let others bear the brunt of the battle and so became 2nd Lieutenant in the 9th Battalion Essex Regiment where he was served with distinction and was awarded the Military Cross, which also can be seen on display. ese diaries are part of the Museum’s collection and provide an insight into an individual’s experience of the First World War, and at times can provide a harrowing account of what was witnessed. Also on display is a letter sent from Buckingham Palace to ex-prisoner of war Pte Stewart Graham of 1/19th London Regiment signed by King George V, stating ‘e Queen joins me in welcoming you on your release from the miseries and hardships, which you have endured with so much patience and courage’. e letter is one example of those sent to prisoners of war in 1918, following their release. e Mayor of Broxbourne, Cllr Bren Perryman said, ‘e enormous sacrifices made by those fighting on the front line and those at home, have all helped to shape the Country we live in today and must never be forgotten.’ e exhibition is one of a number of events taking place across the Borough to mark the war’s centenary. A ‘War Horse’ craft event will take place at Lowewood on ursday 30 October, 12-3pm, as part of the museum’s family fun programme. e exhibition will be on display at Lowewood Museum until 20 December 2014. Well, look no further Epping Forest District Council’s Play Schemes are here once again and promise to be great fun for all. Following a hugely successful summer holiday of fun and activities, Epping Forest District Council’s Community Development team has organised another fun-filled week during the school half term for children aged from 5 to 11 years. ere will be plenty to do and so there is no reason for parents to hear those immortal words ringing in their ears, “I’m bored, what can I do?” Epping Forest Play Schemes are an opportunity for children to have fun, learn new skills and make new friends. Activities include sports, art and craft, drama, indoor games and exciting challenges. e ‘purple people’ (so called because of their purple uniform) are back again to provide young people with plenty to keep them occupied. e autumn half term week (Monday 27 October to Friday 31 October) has an explosive and spooky theme, in time for Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night. All children attending should wear suitable clothing and shoes and bring a packed lunch. A healthy morning snack is provided, however. e Council’s Community, Health & Wellbeing Manager Gill Wallis said: “Even though the summer holidays have only just come to an end, we are planning our next week of fun! Turn out the light, get a blanket to hide under and only peek out when you know it’s safe. However fun shouldn’t be too frightening. You should only watch these ﬁlms if you don’t get too scared or jump out of your skin when someone (or group) knock at the door either promising or threatening the inevitable - ‘Trick or Treat’… For the more adventurous and daring you could take a visit to a haunted house. is suggestion is only for the bravest and those in Essex who are not afraid of the dark! Simone Rocha o Simone Rocha took inspiration from quaint ‘50s housewives and gave them an edgy spin for SS15, resulting in a cool-girl’s guide to doing demure... Rocha has developed a signature style of full skirts, sheer fabric and asymmetric cuts. She didn’t stray too far from that, but this collection still felt fresh and new w.. In parts, there was something of the 1950s saucy housewife about it, with headscarvees, fluffy mules, nightdresses and evven en sheer trench coats. Other looks were classic Rocha; sheer dresses with bold, floral applique designs in black, white or red. Footwear is always a highlight with Simone Rocha, too. She’s a fan of a chunky lace-up, often with the focus on a perspex or jewelled low heel. Next season we’re looking forward to her Derby lace-ups and Mary Janes. The new Rocha spin? A kitten heel. Laser-cut leather and substantial sandals contradict the delicacy of the intricate prints. The Mulberry Girl may be wearing the finest silk, but she remains cool, contemporary, and ready to enjoy herself whatever the English spring weather throws at her...

Perennial English flowers, hand-sketched in the famous gardens of Kew ew,, Sissinghurst and Great Dixter ixter,, inspire the new season prints. The delphinium appears as a grand monochromatic design on printed silk and lace. For an intricately woven jacquard this pretty floral is also contrasted with the uniformity of garden trellis. The colour palette works with White and Cream accented with Black and earthy Khaki, while rich Delphinium Blue offers a pop of colour. In true Mulberry style, prettiness is presented with an edge: dresses and skirts are paired with contemporary leather pieces, some with laser-cut perforations, and luxurious but casual lurex wool cardigans. Sleeves rolled up, our Mulberry girl’s style is inspired by the eccentricities of the English lady gardener. Skirts and pinafores with practical pockets nod to a gardener working in an idyllic country garden but ready for anything, tools in hand, unafraid of a bit of mud! The Mulberry Girl is wearing sandals inspired by classic gardening clogs. These practical and charming shoes are given a beautiful and fashion-forward makeover for this season’s Gardening Sandals, with soles carved from solid wood and criss-crossed leather straps. Natural Vachetta Leather is favoured for its natural and rustic finish; the perfect complement to the lavish prints and fabrics in the collection. Of course, no English country look can be complete without a Wellie, but this is no ordinary rubber boot. The upper of the new Mulberry Garden Wellie features the wild flower design, woven into a rich metallic jacquard.

Sophia Webster Webster “Jungle is massive” For Spring/Summer 15, Sophia Webster played on different interpretations of ‘Jungle’. Finding basis in Henri Rousseau’s fantasy jungle world paintings and Henri Matisse’s whimsical leaf cut outs, Sophia metamorphoses leopard print, jungle flowers and plants with her own signature use of colour and print. Acid and techno colour palettes, coupled with Sophia’s own love of heavy rhythms and underground music, led her to invoke the hedonistic world of a 90s jungle rave. The collection is inspired by rave-wear: feminine clubcolour camo prints, fruity colours mixed with Aztec prints, girly-warrior embellishments and graffiti tags adorn caged booties, platforms and knee-padded thigh-high boots as well as speech bubble bags and fruity backpacks. f there’s one thing that will stop you puckering up with your other half, it’s a nasty cold sore on your lip. They may be small and often barely noticeable to others - but to the sufferer they can seem huge, and very obvious. The reality is, however, that if sufferers were brave enough to go on their dates, their partners would probably sympathise, as the Herpes Viruses Association (HVA) estimate that by the age of 25, 60% of people will have become infected with the herpes simplex (HSV) type 1 virus that most commonly causes cold sores. HOW DO YOU CATCH THEM?

The virus is very much a kissing disease, passed on by mouth-to-mouth from someone who has a cold sore on their face. “It’s skin contact with friction, so you’re more likely to catch a cold sore off somebody if it’s a long kiss, rather than just a peck on the lips,” says Nigel Scott of the HVA. However, as the virus is fragile and dies very quickly when it’s off the skin, it’s only caught by direct skin contact. So there’s no need to worry about sharing cups or towels with sufferers. It can also be killed by water, or getting too hot or cold. Not all people infected with HSV will develop cold sores as a result, say experts. In fact, only around a quarter of carriers will ever experience symptoms. “You can catch it and never get symptoms,” says Scott. “Or there could be a trigger at any stage of your life and you get a cold sore.” WHAT ARE THE TRIGGERS?

Once you’ve caught HSV, it hides in nerve sheaths and can be reactivated by various situations, including tiredness, illness, stress, being run-down, menstruation, too much alcohol or the ultraviolet rays from sunbeds or sunlight. Some people can have recurrent outbreaks as often as once a month. Scott says: “If your mouth and lips get very sore if you do something like eat a very scratchy French loaf, if you get very run-down, or something upsets 40

BY LISA SALMON your immune system - any of these things can act as triggers. “The immune system would normally keep this virus suppressed, but if it’s really stretched with something else, sometimes it doesn’t quite manage.” HOW DOES IT FEEL?

There will be an itchy, tingly feeling on or near the lip when a cold sore is developing, and perhaps a feeling of pressure. This is the time to treat the area, as at this stage it’s possible to stop the cold sore developing, says Scott.

If left untreated, the itchy feeling develops into a small red patch, then a blister, which bursts and heals into the classic cold sore scab, normally lasting around a week. Sores tend to appear where you’ve been kissed, although they can occasionally recur anywhere on the face. In general, the virus prefers the moist skin that lines the lips, mouth and nose. TREATMENT

The HVA says the best way to avoid cold sores is to look after

yourself, and those who are prone to them should steer clear of any potential triggers. GP Dr Phil Hammond, a patron of the HVA, warns that exposure to bright sunlight, which can trigger a cold sore outbreak, is a particular risk for skiers at this time of year, and advises them to use a good sun block. “A few unlucky people seem to get frequent repeat outbreaks sometimes triggered by stress, poor diet, lack of sleep or exposure to bright sunlight,” he says. “A long-term course of antiviral tablets can deal with this.” Aciclovir, a medication used to treat a variety of viral infections including cold sores, shingles and chickenpox, is commonly prescribed to sufferers, and some aciclovir creams can be bought over the counter at pharmacies. Other cold sore treatments include using a herbal cream made with lemon balm, or a liquorice balm, which can help reduce the severity and duration of outbreaks. Medical nutritionist and former GP Dr Sarah Brewer says liquorice extracts stimulate immunity by increasing production of the antiviral substance ‘interferon’. “When applied to the lips, it suppresses the production of viral proteins needed to keep the herpes virus in its latent state, so they’re less likely to cause an eruption,” she says. “When applied to a sore, it promotes more rapid destruction of infected cells.” FIGHT THOSE COLD SORES

The Herpes Viruses Association has these suggestions for sufferers... • Start treatment as soon the characteristic tingling starts. • Apply well-wrapped ice for 90 minutes to cool the area. • Use over-the-counter creams. • Apply cold, used teabags to the sore every hour. • Use tea tree oil or geranium oil to help speed healing. • Keep the sore moist so it doesn’t crack with a dab of Vaseline. • See your doctor for antiviral tablets if you have recurrent outbreaks.

Also it's so important to know how to check moles that may have changed over the summer. I have come across a lot of clients who have had moles removed from the back area, it's a tricky area to check yourself so get your partners or friends to check for you. PERFECT SKIN PIGMENT BALANCING TREATMENT is treatment involves combining the most eﬀective methods to help sun damaged skin and an uneven skin tone. For those individuals with more severe pigmentation a medical grade skin cream can be prescribed whilst receiving these treatments and this will be discussed at your consultation.

STEP 1 A bespoke cocktail of speciﬁc alpha hydroxy acids combined with gluthatione is applied to the face and neck. AHA peels work by removing the upper layer of skin cells, allowing younger, healthier cells to take their place. Helps uneven skin tone, increased cell turnover, and a brighter smoother complexion. Gluthatione prevents darkening of the skin and helps reduce pigmentation. It also protects the cells from destruction brought about by free radicals. Areas such as lips, scalp, tops of ears and your back are areas often missed, you can get your partner or a friend to check your back and scalp, these are both areas often missed by sun cream application. 3 Look for new skin markings that you haven't noticed before. Changes in mole size or colour and any lack of symmetry. Lesions that don't appear to be healing and that ooze or bleed. 4 Use the ABC method to examine each individual mole. Asymmetry: If one side of the mole does not generally match the other side, this could indicate melanoma. Border:The border should have smooth edges. Colour: Black may be indicative of melanoma. Red, white and multicolored moles should also be checked by a professional. Diameter: The size standard for moles is that they should be smaller than the diameter of a pencil eraser Elevation: Moles are ideally flush with the surrounding skin. Raised moles should always be looked at by a dermatologist, 5Take pictures of your moles or keep a log of your findings. 6 Note any new moles that may arise. The Hendersons are no stranger to building projects. The couple built their beautiful and modern home ten yyears ears ago, an experience that left them less than enthused at the prospect of another home improvement e project. While both had very firm ideas about the standard of finish on the propertyy, the builders had a very different idea. Mr Henderson explains: “The sad thing about the original house project was that the builders’ idea of finished was very different to ours. The building took over a yyear earr, and we began to think the early enthusiasm was beginning to wane slightlyy. So when we made the decision to add a pool house in the garden w wee couldn n’t help remembering some of the pitfalls.” Luckilyy, history was not destined to repeat itself. The couple chose a striking bespoke modern pool house from Origin Leisure, who handled the project

from start to finish, and they couldn’t be happier with the final result. The pool house has stunning tunning stain softwood w weatherboar eatherboard exterior and slate grey roof to compliment the Hendersons home and fit in with the surrounding area. Grey aluminium bi-fold doors open up the building into the garden, bringing the outside in, while the ceramic tiles, a grey washed timber roof and country cream walls finish the interior beautifullyy.. The building, which includes an additional extension with a changing room, sho ow wer room and WC, measures a total of 128m² and includes a porch and store room. Origin Leisure undertook every element of the process, from the initial ideas to planning, construction and completion. The couple w wer ere surprised at how stress-free the project was, as Mr Henderson explains: “Origin was infinitely patient with our changes of mind, moments of inspiration, and indecisions about detail. The company is very open to innovation and are happ pyy to consider details in length, from pool size to tiling style and the unique roof option that we developed betw ween een ee us. “Origin n’s focus is on qualityy.. Another happy customer is Mrs Shears, who also took advantage of Origin Leisurre’s ability to manage the whole project from start to finish in the design and build of her barn-style pool house. The impressive 120m² pool house has been designed to blend perfectly with the surrounding Buckinghamshire countryside with a stained softwood dw weatherboar eatherboard d exterior and a charcoal grey shingle roof tile. Mrs Shears choose bi-folding doors to open up the whole side of the building during the summerr, as w well ell as a bar and seating area, perfect for entertaining friends and familyy.. Since the project was completed Mrs Shears hasn’t looked back and has enjoyed evver ery minute of having her own privvate swimming pool right on the doorstep. She explains: “The finished building matches our home and adds enormously to the look of our gardens, and that’s before you get inside and appreciate the sheer joy of it. rban Myth. Quite an odd name for a company specialising in kitchen design, until you think about it: ere are so many urban myths surrounding kitchen design that it actually makes sense. It’s pure urban myth that there is a particular style of kitchen suited to a particular style of home, I mean, how many Victorian semis have you seen that still don’t have an indoor toilet, a ﬁtted bath or a shower cubicle, mains electricity or a ﬂat screen television? Stands to reason then, that you don’t need to have a traditional kitchen. You can have a modern one if you want. It won’t look out of place, even if your dining room has wood panelling, in this day and age you’re fairly unlikely to be eating mutton curry by gas light. More likely is that you’ll want to embrace the modern trend of an open plan, social household. You’ll want a kitchen that simultaneously works as a food preparation, dining and social space. Somewhere the cook of the house isn’t hidden away while preparing a meal but kept entertained by the rest of the household. A place to eat, play, relax, entertain, study and well, pretty much do anything you want in, except maybe playing golf. We don’t advocate that in your kitchen.
