In the grounds of Henry VIII’s magnificent Grade I listed Tudor Palace, be wowed by stunning gardens, vibrant floral displays, and endless shopping. RHS has revealed the gardens line-up and preview highlights from the very best garden designers and experts gathering to showcase cutting-edge design, thought provoking displays and innovative ideas with inspiration and colour. The Proms returns to the iconic Royal Albert Hall this summer for its first full eight-week season in two years. Its aim is to bring the best in classical music to the widest possible audience, remaining true to founder-conductor Henry Wood’s original vision in 1895. Whether you are a classical connoisseur or think ‘classical music is not for me’ there is something for everyone in the eight week series of concerts. Pick of the Classics - from Mozart and Beethoven to Ravel and Prokofiev, this Proms season is jam-packed full of classic composers and repertoire. With performances from some of the greatest orchestras in the world, a night at the Proms is the ultimate concert experience.

A visit to the Tower of London this summer will be even more special as w e celebrate the Platinum Jubilee year of HM The Queen. To mark the occasion, over 20 million seeds have been sown in the famous moat which will develop and morph over the course of the summer, culminating in the creation of a beautiful, new naturalistic landscape in the moat. Designed to attract pollinators, ‘Superbloom’ will bring a wonderful natural beauty to the urban space and introduce a new biodiverse habitat for wildlife. It will celebrate the value of nature for our wellbeing. Superbloom runs from June to September. As an evolving display, it’s designed to offer visitors a changing experience depending on when they visit - moving from soft green hues in June to whites, blues, pinks and oranges throughout the height of summer and into September.

ROYAL MAIL UNVEILS NEW SET OF STAMPS SHOWCASING MIGRATORY BIRDS

oyal Mail has unveiled a new set of stamps depicting migratory birds, exploring the spring and summer bird visitors to the UK. The 10 featured birds have been illustrated for Royal Mail by Irish ornithologist Killian Mullarney, one of Europe’s best-known bird artists, whose work has featured in the Collins Bird Guide and on stamps issued in the Republic of Ireland. The stamps showcase the diversity of migratory birds that arrive in the UK, from seabirds that migrate along the UK’s coastline, such as the Arctic skua and Arctic tern, to the rare bird of prey, Montagu’s harrier. Other birds on the stamps include the stonecurlew, swallow, swift, turtle dove and yellow wagtail. David Gold, of Royal Mail, said: “The migratory journeys of the birds featured on these stamps are truly amazing. Their annual travels have fascinated and baffled naturalists for centuries. “It is only now that we are beginning to understand what drives and maintains this amazing, high-risk–high-reward behaviour. We hope that these stamps ignite a new interest in this remarkable phenomenon.”

To mark the occasion, the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum has installed a new exhibition dedicated to Centre Court – 100 Years of Change – for visitors to enjoy, and a commemorative centenary towel will be on sale. Taking place at the magnificent All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon since 1877, it is a quintessentially British experience. Games are still played on the original playing surface, grass, and there’s a strict white-only dress code for players. The Tournament attracts around 500,000 spectators including members of The Royal Family and celebrities, plus more than a billion viewers across 200 nations. 2022 also marks the first year that The Championships will take place over 14 days, with the introduction of play on the Middle Sunday to the permanent schedule for the first time. It has never been more important for sports events to be proactively taking steps to enhance their accessibility in order to reach broader and more diverse audiences. The staggered start times of Centre Court (1.30pm) and No.1 Court (1.00pm), introduced in 2021, will be retained and run through until finals weekend when play on Centre Court will commence at 2pm. There is not a public ballot for tickets in 2022. Guests who were successful in the 2020 public ballot are being offered the same day and court for 2022. The Grounds capacity will be up to 42,000 each day. After two years, The Queue will return for spectators wishing to buy tickets on the day, as will Ticket Resale, for those wishing to purchase returned Centre Court, No.1 Court and No.2 Court tickets, in return for a donation to the Wimbledon Foundation. METEORITES LAND at Avon House School

Pupils from Avon House Preparatory School got their hands on rare samples of moon rocks and meteorites on May 2022 during a series of science lessons which were truly out of this world.

tudents were encouraged to reach for the stars and learn more about the Universe around us during a week-long interactive experience of astronomy. Youngsters were given the unique opportunity to actually touch a piece of space rock not of this Earth as they were allowed to handle some genuine meteorites. These rare samples were provided free of charge by the UK’s Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), which provides educational packs in a bid to inspire young people to get involved in science and complement classroom studies. The pack provided by STFC includes a 1.2 billionyear-old piece of Mars rock and a 4.3 billion-year-old nickel meteorite. It is unlikely that students will ever get the chance to hold an object older than this, as Earth itself was formed 4.6 billion years ago. The packs have been recently updated to also include a new meteorite hunter’s kit, new teacher planning pack and exciting new web-based resources and online support videos for all age groups, primary to secondary. The lunar samples were collected in the late 1960s and early 1970s during some of NASA’s first manned space missions to the Moon. During these missions, a staggering 382kg of material was brought back

Samples like these can tell us a great deal about the planets, from which they originate, but there is still much to learn – and STFC hopes these packs will encourage students to become the next generation of astronomers. STFC’s Executive Chair, Professor Mark Thomson, said: “We are thrilled to be able to offer this unique opportunity to young people. It is not often they will be able to see close-up, and actually touch, such important fragments of science history. Samples like these are vital in teaching us more about our solar system, allowing us to confront theory with fact. We hope this experience will encourage the students to take up a career in science.” STFC is the only authorised source to loan lunar samples to educational and scientific organisations in the UK.

he Noughties are back in a big way. Y2K-inspired trends have been taking over fashion for a while now – from low-rise jeans to velour tracksuits – and now our hair and make-up looks are getting the 2000s treatment. No7 (no7beauty.co.uk) make-up ambassador Joy Adenuga believes TikTok plays a big part in this. “There are lots of trends from the past coming back and being made popular again by creators,” she says. “Another reason is popular celebrities from the Noughties being in the spotlight right now. Great examples are Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears.” Both women were Noughties icons, and continue to make headlines today – JLo for her engagement to Ben Affleck (who she was last engaged to in 2002), and Spears, who recently announced her pregnancy on Instagram. Luckily, techniques and technology have come a long way since the Noughties. frosted eyes a la Doja Cat or Hailey Bieber, with a bit of effort. “The key to acing a frosted eyeshadow colour is warming up the crease areas with warm shades, and applying your favourite frosted shade to the middle of the lid,” Adenuga explains. “You can start the application of the frosted shade with your ring fingers, to control how opaque you want the colour, before switching to an eye brush.”

Clips, clips and more clips Remember loading up your hair with as many clips as possible? That trend is well and truly back, judging by Emma Watson’s standout beauty look on the 2022 Bafta red carpet. If you want to recreate the style, Vera says: “Split hair into a middle parting and smooth down the hair on your scalp, removing any bumps from the top. Pull the front sections of your hair tight to your head and back towards the ears, before applying four to eight clips each side. “Insert the clips one by one and evenly on each side to frame the face, or place them in scattered and different directions for a funkier look. Finish with some salt spray to the ends of the hair, to add a beach-waved but natural effect.”

This is yet another TikTok trend that has made its way onto our Instagram feeds – and eventually the red carpet. It’s part of the ‘indie sleaze’ trend – the renaissance of grungy looks, a la Kate Moss in the Noughties. We can also thank actor Julia Fox for popularising this style, as she seems to have an obsession with black eyeliner – done to various degrees of maximalism. From a make-up point of view, it’s all about smudgy black eyeliner. This is Adenuga’s favourite of the 2000s trends, “And actually the easiest to achieve”. She says: “All you need is an eye khol pencil – black might be too intense for some, I’d advise starting with a brown shade. “Draw a line (you don’t need to be neat) as close to your lashes as you can. Grab a smudger eye brush, run that through the line you just created and boom, smudgy black eyeliner achieved.”

Spiky buns “This trending TikTok style doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, thanks to its versatility and suitability for all hair types, textures and lengths,” says Vera. “To create Y2K spikey buns, start by ensuring hair is fully detangled, and separate any hair at the front that you wish to keep outside of the bun. If you wish to incorporate a middle parting, comb this in before proceeding. Group the rest of your hair together and twist into a bun, before securing with a hair tie, either at the nape of your neck for a chic low spiky bun, or higher up the head to mirror Billie Eilish’s go-to look. “The key is to keep the last couple of inches of your hair ends out of the bun, facing upwards. To achieve this nostalgic style, the messier the better, so use the end of a comb to pull out some loose hair tendrils around the front of your face to frame the look. Finish with a spritz of hairspray to set in place. You can even add some mousse or gel to the spiky ends, to draw them out and define even further.”

SUMMER READY FEET

It’s sandal season, so it’s time to get your toes back in action. By Prudence Wade.

hances are, you haven’t given your feet much thought over the winter months – most of us tend to stuff them into slippers or socks as soon as we’re out of the shower, and continue on with our lives. It’s the easiest thing to do – but it also means that when sandal season looms, we’re hit with the familiar panic. What kind of state are our feet in? What will we have to do to get them looking presentable? “There’s an element of ‘out of sight, out of mind’,” says Emma Price, podiatrist and cofounder of PodiPedia.co.uk. “If you don’t have any foot pain, you don’t necessarily think of your feet. It’s not until you get some nice weather and put sandals or flip-flops on, and then go: ‘Oh, what’s that?!’” For Price, feet can “absolutely” affect your confidence. “Personally, it makes me feel great knowing that I’ve got good looking feet,” she says. It’s time to start showing some love to get our soles ready for summer… What might happen to your feet during winter? If you haven’t been regularly buffing and moisturising your feet during the colder months, they’re probably looking a bit rough and ready – but deeper problems could have developed as well. “There’s the potential for fungal infections if they’re not dried properly before you put your socks on,” explains Price. “If your footwear is quite tight, you can get some rubbing – sometimes you can get calluses or corns developing on the sides of your feet, but normally they’re painful.

Corns don’t generally silently appear – you know about them.” Fungal nail infections could be another issue. Price says: “You might not notice them if you’ve got old nail varnish on and you don’t realise there’s something growing under there.” Your feet might also be in desperate need of moisturisation, as they can “dry out with central heating”, says Price. All these are good reasons to keep up a solid footcare routine all year round. If you develop any serious issues, you should see a podiatrist, but if you’re suffering from sad and dry feet, there are things you can do at home. How can you start prepping now? For Price, the first port of call is to remove any

feet, but if you had a dodgy looking tooth or your tooth was going a bit brown or yellow, you’d get yourself straight to the dentist. You wouldn’t paint your tooth and carry on – that’s obviously a bit of a silly example, but it’s true – that’s effectively what you’re doing.” She recommends annual or biannual check-ups with a podiatrist, like you do with a dentist. “I’m very much about prevention being better than a cure,” Price adds, emphasising that podiatrists can spot early signs of serious medical conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

nail polish you might be wearing. “Lots of people just leave the varnish on, so get that off with a really good low acetone or no acetone nail varnish remover,” she says. Next, invest in Price’s favourite tool: a foot file. “You need to file your feet if you have any hard skin or dryness – file before you go into the shower,” she says. Once you’ve had your shower or bath, “Dry your feet thoroughly and put on a really good, urea-based emollient. Urea is a chemical in good foot creams that basically softens the skin for you and helps it stay moist – it’s different to a normal moisturising lotion.” It’s also important keep your toenails trimmed, preferably with “a really good nail file”. This will help keep your nails shaped and short, she says, “and if you do it regularly – once or twice a week – you can keep those looking really great”. The podiatrist prefers a file to nippers or clippers, because it stops you creating edges. “Often an ingrown nail will happen because you have poor cutting technique: you’ve left a 90 degree angle or a spike, or you’ve cut down the side. With a file, you can’t really create problems for yourself.” Price describes a foot file and nail file as her “weapons of choice for public consumption. It keeps you out of hot water and it’s much safer for the general public.” She recommends giving your feet a “quick zhuzh” with both tools at least twice a week.

What mistakes should we be watching out for? She says motorised rotation sanding devices are fine if used appropriately, but doesn’t recommend using one to attack the thick calluses on your feet. Podiatrists use a scalpel blade designed to cut through skin, “and we can take off huge amounts of skin for you – you wouldn’t believe the difference, it’s amazing”. She also isn’t so keen on pumice stones, as “they can be quite rough”, she says. “The classic is people having a bath and then they attack their foot with a pumice stone – and rarely can that actually be helpful. I think they rip your skin, when what you want is a file that’s going to produce – it’s a bit gross, actually – a really fine powder.”

MAXI DRESSES When it comes to trends, Katie Eastwood, stylist ambassador at Stitch Fix UK (stitchfix.co.uk) says you can’t discuss occasionwear without mentioning Bridgerton. “Last year’s obsession with Regencycore isn’t going anywhere,” she says. “Look out for puff sleeves, embroidery and full lengths when embracing this trend. Opt for minimal jewellery and a muted bag, so your gown can take centre stage.” Thomasine Jordan, global product and design director for LK Bennett (lkbennett.com) says there are plenty of ways to bring a vintage spin to your fashion: “From eye-catching fabrics and painterly prints, to dainty button details and ruffle motifs”. Maxi dresses perfectly fit the Bridgerton aesthetic, and Jordan suggests they offer a dramatic and elegant look for formal occasions.

FLORALS “Maximalism with a classic twist is a key trend for 2022, with bold florals and prints seen on classic shift and Fifties dress shapes,” says Reik. “Detailed hand embroidery on classic fitted jackets are the ultimate in femininity combined with individuality.” Eastwood says floral dresses can be elevated for special events, or muted for more casual occasions. “Pair your frock with a blazer and heels for your best friend’s big wedding,” she suggests. “Then tone it down with trainers and a cardigan for a picnic date in the park.” 25 34 2 J JU UN NE E 2200222 2

TAILORED TROUSER SUITS “This powerful and sophisticated look is commonly associated with workwear, but can easily be customised for weddings,” says Eastwood. “Start by ditching darker pieces in grey and black, instead opting for a more colourful palette.” She says vibrant suits make a statement and are perfect in pastel shades – a spring staple. “Pair your trouser suit with a fitted white top and a matching white clutch or chain bag for a contrasting, clean fit,” adds Eastwood. Caroline Young, author of The Colour Of Fashion: The Story Of Clothes In Ten Colours (Welbeck, £14.99) is also a fan of bold, block colours. “Whether it’s a zesty green, lemon yellow or one of the many [shades of] pink, it’s a great way to bring a burst of vibrancy with you,” she says. “You could also take inspiration from the Duchess of Sussex’s two-piece tailored suit, worn to the Invictus Games. Rather than choosing pristine white, you could go for fuchsia, soft orange, peach or electric blue.”

Inside Angela Reed Family businesses with more than a century in their trade are not readily associated with innovation and adaptation but Angela Reed is bucking the trend.

he Reed family from the Essex market town of Saffron Walden have sold quality furniture and homeware for 140 years but the pandemic gave them an unexpected opportunity to rethink their offering – and they have emerged much stronger as a result. Their flagship store, set across five floors and 13 showrooms, has long been a fixture in Saffron Walden; a destination shop for locals and those from further afield stocking high-end, bespoke pieces, office essentials and adorable accessories. But under the management of the latest members of the family to take the helm, David Reed and his wife Kate, the store is moving into an exciting new phase while managing to retain every ounce of its authenticity and charm.

MAXIMUM FLOWER POWER ALL SUMMER LONG G eraniums are the absolute classic among flowering bedding and balcony plants, the perfect choice for window boxes, hanging baskets, containers and flower beds in sunny locations thanks to their long flowering period and a variety of colours and shapes that is hard to beat. Geraniums can withstand periods of heat - even temporary drought - and are largely resistant to plant diseases and pests. Geranium care is so straightforward that even gardening novices can enjoy this blooming beauty. The wild forms of our modern geraniums originate from the Cape region in South Africa and modern cultivated varieties also love the sun. The more sun they get, the more at home they feel and the more flowers they produce. But geraniums can also thrive in partial shade. When planting, make sure they have plenty of room to grow. Planters mustn’t be shallower than 18cm deep and there should be a minimum distance of 20cm between plants. In order to remain healthy, hardy and producing new flowers over many months, they need plenty of nutrients. That is why they are geraniums are known as ‘heavy feeders’. If you plant them in prefertilised potting compost, they can usually cover their needs in the first few weeks completely from the nutrients they have on hand. If you use a slowrelease fertiliser, this can be the case for several months. At some point, however, the nutrients will be exhausted, so additional fertilising becomes

necessary. The composition of special geranium fertiliser is perfectly adapted to the needs of this balcony beauty. A good, natural geranium fertiliser is coffee grounds, as these contain just the right mix of potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen to provide all the nutrients geraniums need for optimal growth. To ensure an even supply of nutrients, we recommend weekly applications of fertiliser.
