TAKE A REALITY CHECK When was the last time you checked your Twitter, Facebook or Instagram account? Or had a quick look to see what your favourite celebrity is getting up to? 67% of the UK population are active social media users (according to statista.com), which has also given rise to a culture of product endorsement.
C
elebrities and influencers have quickly realised the power and value of recommending a product to their followers. When a person idolises a celebrity who then posts a picture or video of themselves on social media saying how much they enjoy using a certain brand of make-up, or drinking a certain champagne … well you don’t need to be a marketing genius to realise the potential effect that may have on sales. The difficulty with all this came when users realised that some of the celebrities they followed were being paid for endorsing products without disclosing that in their posts. In early 2019 Britain’s competition watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority, said it had secured formal agreements, led by a number of high profile social media celebrities including Rita Ora, Millie Mackintosh and Ellie Goulding to agree to state clearly in their posts if they had been paid or received any gifts related to the products they endorsed. As a result, these and many other celebrities all now add hashtags such as #ad, #spon (sponsored), #paid to show that the content creator has been paid by a company to advertise the product or service. There is even a guide for influencers on the gov.uk website, explaining how to be up-front and honest about what you are promoting. But of course in the wild world of social media, there will always be people who try to flout the guidelines. A few weeks ago The Times reported on the case of three
14 JANUARY 2020
Instagram influencers (two former cast members of The Only Way is Essex, and one former Love Island contestant), who were filmed by the BBC agreeing to be paid to promote a drink, without realising that one of the drink’s ingredients was hydrogen cyanide, an extremely poisonous liquid. There have also been warnings from the Financial Conduct Authority, who have spotted a number of ‘get rich quick’ posts from social media influencers who appear to be endorsing high-risk investment schemes from unregulated companies. These posts, which often show young people posing with sports cars and luxury goods, are clearly targeted at those wanting a similar lifestyle. However, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is now making a concerted effort to crack down on this type of activity which it says is “carrying out regulated activities which require authorisation”. In other words, these companies do not have the necessary accreditation or qualifications to offer these services. “When it comes to managing your savings and achieving your financial objectives it is vital that you speak to an independent and regulated financial planner,” says Neil Hewitt of Scrutton Bland. “Working with an experienced professional financial adviser means they look at the whole of the market to find the right savings or investment product for you. They will take the time to get to know you and help you put in place a financial planning strategy to help you meet your wealth management objectives.”

A WARM WELCOME AT THE OAK-TREE SCHOOLS
P
ahe importance of sending children to a welcoming school was highlighted recently by a prospective parent visiting one of the four Oak-Tree Schools. Following their personalised tour they commented to the Headmistress, “We’ve visited a few schools with our daughter but we’re impressed with how welcome we’ve been made to feel. There’s such a lovely atmosphere for the staff and pupils -it feels like a real community.” All schools aim to be welcoming for their families and most create brochures, websites, newsletters, and special events to involve their families. The Oak-Tree Schools, however, have been commended over and again for going above and beyond ‘the norm’ to welcome pupils and parents into the school communities.
Open-Door Policy The purpose of an Open-Door Policy is to encourage open communication, feedback and discussion. All of the Oak-Tree Schools value the input from parents, preferring them to share any queries or concerns as they happen in order to give the schools the chance to work together with them and so putting their minds at ease. Matthew Hagger, Group Managing Principal, explains, “Our ‘open door’ policy enables parents to be quickly reassured by a class teacher, a member of the Senior Leadership Team or the Headmistress. All class teachers are readily available for brief conversations at the start and end of the school day or for longer conversations at a mutually convenient time. Parents are also used to contacting us by email, Portal message or telephone. Regular class assemblies, drop-in sessions and social events encourage parents to play an active part in their children’s education. 16 JANUARY 2020
We understand that parents will have a number of queries throughout their children’s time with us and that they shouldn’t have to wait until one of the more formal occasions. This is why we are happy to discuss any aspect of the education we provide whenever we can.” The School Environment The Oak-Tree Schools promise smaller, more nurturing environments that offer a more personalised service than some of their larger counterparts. Each Oak-Tree School caters for between 200 and 300 pupils, providing environments in which children can flourish as teachers know each child well and can provide support and challenge in each lesson. With average class sizes between 12 and 18, a more personalised education is possible. Mr Hagger says, “The traditional values on which the four schools were founded continue to be at the core of our ethos, enhanced by the very best practices in modern education. Your child’s education is important to us and we nurture each child individually, taking into consideration their unique needs and talents.” Oak-Tree Coffee Mornings Between October and March each year there is a programme of informal Coffee Mornings for each Headmistress and Group Managing Principal, Mr Hagger to chat with parents year group by year group at each school. Mr Hagger says, “These are useful to discuss various aspects of our education, with no set agenda, and to listen to feedback. The Coffee Mornings inform our school development plans as we continually look to enhance the services we provide to our families. Parents are always welcome to bring up anything that they would like to discuss, no matter how small or large. We can discuss anything from the development of our extra-curricular activities programme to recent enhancements to the quality of the education. Some groups focus on particular themes, such as our intensive preparation for senior schools for parents of the older Oaklands and Coopersale Hall children, or our careers advice and Sixth Form entries at Normanhurst and Braeside.”

rom miniskirts and hot pants to vibrant tights and makeup, discover how iconic fashion designer Dame Mary Quant launched a fashion revolution on the British high street. Over 200 garments accessories, cosmetics, sketches and photographs are on display, including unseen pieces from the designer’s personal archive. Inventive, opinionated and commercially minded, Dame Mary Quant was the most iconic fashion designer of the 1960s. A design and retail pioneer, she popularised super-high hemlines and other irreverent looks that were critical to the development of the ‘Swinging Sixties’ scene. V&A’s fashion collections include examples of her famous designs from across the 1960s and 1970s. The exhibition explores the years between 1955 and 1975, when Quant revolutionised the high street, harnessing the youthful spirit of the sixties and new mass production techniques to create a new look for women. Quant personified the energy and fun of Swinging London; and was a powerful role model for the working woman. She popularised the miniskirt, colourful tights, and tailored trousers – encouraging a new age of feminism. The mini skirt would go on to become an icon of the time and spark a new creative scene in London and beyond. The beginning of the exhibition sets the scene of post-war London for the opening of Quant’s experimental shop Bazaar, on Chelsea’s King’s Road in 1955. It will show how her designs, often based on schoolgirl pinafores or masculine tailoring, brought an entertaining slant to fashion, soon noticed by fashion editors and newspaper journalists in the burgeoning media of the day. At Bazaar, loud music, free drinks, witty window displays and extended opening hours created a
‘scene’ that often kept going late into the evening. Young women travelled to Bazaar to enjoy shopping for ‘something different’ in a much less formal environment. Quant’s tiny boutique grew into a wholesale brand available in department stores across the UK and her designs made for chain stores and mail order companies in America. Dame Mary Quant said: “The V&A is such a precious and iconic organisation for which I have the utmost admiration and respect, and it is a huge honour to be recognised by them. It was a wonderfully exciting time and despite the frenetic, hard work we had enormous fun. We didn’t necessarily realise that what we were creating was pioneering, we were simply too busy relishing all the opportunities and embracing the results before rushing on to the next challenge! I am enormously grateful to so many talented people whose contribution to that ground-breaking, revolutionary and memorable era will also be recognised.” V

tower bridge launches new film and exhibition in celebration of its for 125th anniversary
Time Bascule: Wednesday 29 January – March 2020
T
ower Bridge is set to launch its latest art commission with internationally acclaimed artist, inventor and filmmaker Di Mainstone, who has written and directed a film to celebrate the iconic Bridge’s 125th anniversary. In her film, entitled ‘Time Bascule’, Tower Bridge has been reimagined as a giant musical instrument, drawing inspiration from one of the first women to work on the Bridge - Hannah Griggs, who cooked for the Bridge Master and his family between 19111915. In Time Bascule Hannah plays the role of musical maestro to pluck the strings and ‘play’ the iconic London location. Mixing the real with the imagined, the film explores Hannah’s life in the famous towers via a specially composed musical narrative that weaves through one of the remarkable personal histories from 125 years of the Bridge. Focusing on her love of plants, the dreamlike work sees Hannah researching the connection between music and plant growth, working to develop larger and more ambitious tools to help her ‘play’ Tower Bridge like a giant musical instrument. The brand new work will be on display as part of an immersive exhibition in the Victorian Engine Rooms, inviting visitors to step into the song at the heart of the Bridge and experience the – until now – hidden sounds of London’s defining landmark. Designed to showcase the making of the film, the exhibition will include behind the scenes footage, storyboards and early sketches, and a chance for visitors to play a range of specially created musical instruments, all housed among the cultivated plants at the heart of Hannah’s fairy-tale. Artist Di Mainstone has previously developed instruments to create music from the Brooklyn Bridge, Clifton Suspension Bridge and most recently Sunderland’s new Northern Spire Bridge. She is an award-winning WIRED innovation fellow who specialises in creating playable bridges and wearable sonic devices. The New York Times has featured her as one of their ‘new generation visionaries’ of the international digital art scene. Di Mainstone says: “I wanted visitors to view the Bridge in a different way, reimagining the iconic

crossing as a giant musical instrument to hear the historic song at the heart of its 125-year history. I was determined to give visitors a greater insight into the story of Hannah Griggs - it was inspiring to meet her descendants, and bring her personal history to life in such a wonderful location. The film takes a look at the wider discussion around climate change, utilising the Bascule mechanism of the Bridge as a metaphor for balance, harmony and the delicate balance of our ecosystem”. Chris Earlie, Head of Tower Bridge, says: “We’re thrilled to welcome artist Di Mainstone to reimagine one of the enduring human stories behind London’s defining landmark. We’re excited to showcase the fascinating visual and sonic work Di has crafted as part of her specially commissioned piece, welcoming visitors to explore the Bridge in a truly different light. The exhibition kick-starts another exciting year for the Bridge, further establishing Tower Bridge as a cross-genre cultural space in the capital.” For more details visit www.towerbridge.org.uk #InsideTowerBridge

Once you were proud. Now you’re just worried. It’s natural for a parent to feel pride on their son or daughter’s graduation day. But when the months drift by and their offspring don’t seem able to land a job, pride turns to worry. It’s not as if it’s the fault of graduates, either. 90 per cent of their degrees are non-vocational, with no relevance to any particular industry. And for every job, there are at least 80 applicants. No wonder parents feel a growing sense of frustration, and feel that there’s nothing they can do about it. Well, actually there is. They could ask us at Graduate Coach to help. We have coached hundreds of graduates into graduatelevel jobs — with a 98 per cent success rate.

A SPECIAL SENSE NEEDS A SPECIALIST SURGEON Ear problems can be very distressing
S
ound entering the ear canal moves ear drum. This vibrates the small bones of hearing called ossicles and this, in turn, moves fluid in the inner ear to convert sound signal to electrical signal. This is interpreted by the brain. Ear problems like wax in the ear canal, ear infections, otosclerosis and ear drum perforation can affect your hearing. To make diagnosis good detailed history, examination and special hearing test are required. As ear is one of special sense, you should always trust ear specialist with extensive experience. Conditions in which ear surgeon can help 1. Cholesteatoma – it is the collection of epidermal tissue in the middle ear which is locally invasive and destructive.
43 JANUARY 2020
2. Glue ear – it is a condition in which middle ear which filled with air gets filled with fluid. In most cases, it clears without treatment. In some cases, ventilation tube called grommets may be required. 3. Otosclerosis – is a condition in which one small bone of hearing gets fixed. It can be treated with hearing aid or surgically. 4. Perforated ear drum – is the condition which can be due to chronic ear infection, trauma due sudden loud noise or change in pressure while flying. 5. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss – is the rapid unexplained rapid hearing loss which can require emergency medical treatment. The main treatment is early intervention with oral steroids with or without steroid injection in the ear.

MAKE IT MAXIMALISM
LIGHT ANd BRIGHT
An all-white interior creates the illusion of a room being lighter, brighter and larger. As useful as it is, white is not an emotional colour, so you’ll need layers of texture and tones to bring depth and comfort. Use nuanced shades, from cool to warm, for a softer, more flattering look than a single, pure white,” says Annie Sloan. “If you’re a fan of the modern rustic aesthetic, white-painted reclaimed timber creates a wonderfully cosy look. www.anniesloan.com

Audenza is derived from Latin, meaning to be audacious, daring, bold or courageous. Which is exactly how the ladies behind Audenza feel you should approach decorating your home. “Maximalism exudes the true Audenza spirit. A spirit that celebrates the love of colour, texture, contrast and above all, exuberance. An homage to a glamorous and exciting way of living, with that essential touch of quirkiness for added pizzazz.” – Amelia Brooks, co-founder of Audenza www.audenza.com

Magical Monochrome A FINE LINE Breaking convention, Original BTC was the first brand to use bone china in lighting, paving the way for its pioneering investment in British manufacturing with the 2002 purchase of a struggling Stoke-on-Trent ceramics factory. Today, the factory is Original BTC’s lifeblood, producing the bone china components synonymous with many of its best-loved designs. “We have often been asked to introduce colour and detail to our bone china shades, but maintaining their clear, white glow is integral to both aesthetic and function,” explains Original BTC founder Peter Bowles. “While block colour would impact on bone china’s translucency, classic stripes by their nature maintain the quality of light emitted”, continues Director Charlie Bowles. Hand-cast inhouse in Stoke-on-Trent, the Circle Line and Linear pendants, table and wall lights are hand-painted with crisp, clean black lines of varying widths, bringing graphic interest to the timeless Hector and Drop collections. www.originalbtc.com
PLAyFUL PRINTS This monochrome hand screen printed wallpaper is a curated selection of letterpress characters. Each character has been assembled and hand printed with letterpress icons and wooden type at the Hello Print Studio in Margate. Thiss range is named ‘Hello Prints’ in honour of the studio. A playful collection of cats, robots and nose pickers make this a fun addition to homes, especially children’s rooms! NAT MAKS is Natascha Maksimovic: a German designer and illustrator based at Resort Studios in Margate, Kent. Natascha studied at Camberwell College of Arts and followed on to work for Ridley Scott within the film industry. She has since set up her own illustration and print studio working on various commissions, creating paper and homeware products, all made in England. Natascha explores the concept of patterns, using different print and ink techniques including marbling, watercolours, lino and screen printing. WEIRD & WONDERFUL Take a breath of fresh air Move over cacti because air plants are on the rise. They don’t need soil, just a humid environment, so a bathroom or steamy kitchen would be ideal and you just need to mist them a couple of times a week. They can be used to trail or just form part of a display in a glass container, provided there’s plenty of air circulation around their base. Crocus offers air plants in quirky upside-down sea urchin shells to give a jellyfish effect. (£12.99 per air plant jellyfish at crocus.co.uk)
Find a rainforest favourite
Move over spider plant - we have amazing bat flowers, a palm tree and an air plant jellyfish.
I
f your spider plant has lost its lustre, you’re done with your devil’s ivy and have lost your appetite for your Swiss cheese plant, it’s time to seek out some more unusual houseplants. You could go for a tropical look with parrot-shaped flowers, or something architecturally onpoint, or even a plant that grows coffee beans. So, what’s out there that you probably haven’t tried?
The parrot plant, also known as the Congo cockatoo (but officially Impatiens niamniamensis), is a striking plant which produces unusual red and yellow flattened tubular flowers with a green hooded mouth, dangling below leaves to provide an eye-catching display. Originally a stalwart in the African rainforest, it prefers a humid environment and is ideal in a heated greenhouse or frost-free room but keep it away from central heating because it needs moist air. It will sit happily outside in summer in a shady spot. (£6.99 for a 9cm potted plant, Thompson & Morgan)
go Hawaiian tropical It may be rare, but the Hawaiian palm can bring a dash of the exotic into your home with its rich green leaves and sweet-scented jasmine-like flowers which bloom in October. This succulent, which doesn’t need much watering, makes its main growth in the winter months and is easy to grow indoors. Give it a light position inside in winter and a sheltered position in the house or garden in the summer, when it is dormant. When the lower leaves turn yellow, snap them off to emphasise the characteristic of the trunk. (£17.99 for a 12cm pot from Amazon)
Leaf through spots Variegated leaves are nothing new in the plant world - but what about spots? There’s a begonia out there
52 JANUARY 2020
to give you spots before your eyes. The Begonia maculata ‘Wightii’ has a white dotted upper leaf and deep red underbelly and will do well in bright light but not direct sunlight. Keep the soil moist, watering once the top two inches of soil have dried out, but don’t let the plant dry out completely, and give the plant good humidity. (£19.99 for a 10cm pot from The Ginger Jungle)
Explore elephant ears Alocasia are proving popular at the moment, thanks to their tropical-looking veined leaves in a variety of colours and leaf markings. Try the Amazonian elephant’s ear (Alocasia x amazonica), a dramatic addition to any room, with its arrow-shaped evergreen leaves which reach up to 60cm (24in) long. They do well in a warm, lightly shaded room or conservatory. (£9.99 for an 11cm pot, Thompson & Morgan)
go batty The bat flower (Tacca chantrieri), so called because it mimics a bat in flight, is a striking houseplant whose large, rich leaves surround an almost black bloom with long ‘whiskers’ during summer. Plant it in well-drained soil, positioned in a shady spot with high humidity, so place the pot in a tray of wet gravel to keep the air around it humid. It will need repotting annually as it doesn’t like to be potbound. It’s a great alternative to an orchid. If you’re growing it from seed, soak the seeds for 24 hours before sowing. (£4.99 for five seeds, Suttons)
Fancy a coffee? Ever thought of bringing your own taste of heaven into your home with a coffee plant? The Barista has luscious green leaves to add a tropical touch to a shady spot in your home. Its attractive clusters of sweetly scented white flowers are followed by glorious red berries, which are in fact coffee beans. Sow seeds from January to December but you’ll need to be patient as they are slow-growing. (£3.99, 10 seeds available from January, Suttons)

there’s a chill in the air and it’s time to hibernate at home. gAbriELLE FAgAn hunts the hottest buys to warm up rooms.
colour - orange and green are this season’s front runners - for a winning winter combination.
raid nature’s colour palette Embrace the warmth of the autumn colours as an antidote to the creeping chill in the air. Rich reds and russets star on the hedgerows and trees, and adding those hues in accessories will have the same effect in a room.

ur homes really need to be snug sanctuaries at this time of year, so we can retreat, relax and escape the cold. So, shake up your style to suit the season, splurge on a few treats and you’ll banish the winter decor blues and create a haven where you can rest in comfort.
Go pale but interestinG Chilled out Scandi-style, with its neutral palette, endures because its classic good looks never date and it’s easy to add subtle new touches to suit a new season. The addition of a sheepskin rug (pampering for the toes), a throw, and plenty of cushions covered in tactile fabrics like velvet or wool, are all that’s needed to create a cosseting winter sanctuary.
Harvest some style Treat yourself (and a room) to accessories that are all about chic comfort, which you can move around to suit your mood and the temperature. Think furry pouffes and fluffy beanbags.
be cost-conscious and cosy It’s all about setting the scene with a cosy focal point at this time of year. If you’re lucky enough to own a fireplace, this is the perfect time to take advantage of it and enjoy that beautiful wood smoke smell and orange glow - it’s pure autumn joy. An empty hearth can be made just as appealing with a little imagination. Simply decorate with a cluster of pine cones and add a collection of candles for flickering light.
baG a HiGH-street Hero Supermarket homeware ranges are such a high standard now (and trend led) that you’re missing a decor trick if you don’t check them out. A trolley full of purse-friendly bargains can refresh a room without breaking the bank.
add some va-va-velvet Velvets are one of the biggest ongoing trends in interiors. Pair their touch-me textures with a rich 54 JANUARY 2020
There’s nothing like a bleak, boring view to lower the spirits, especially in winter, but window film or blinds can work wonders on that outlook. Both can make a feature out of an otherwise dull window and ensure you feel boosted, even on dark days.
liGHten tHe mood Lighting is key in the dark, winter months, and table lamps illuminating focal points and areas in a room will make it look interesting and inviting. Show off your playful side and introduce quirky lights, which will make you smile and turn a neglected surface into a feature.
tell a texture story You don’t have to abandon glamour in the bedroom when the temperature drops - instead, layer with soft fabrics, from fluffy sheepskin cushions to silky throws. They won’t just be a visual treat, and are essential in a muted scheme, decorated in neutrals that could otherwise look bland. They’ll also add a sexy, sensual cosiness.
add some fur-fabulous accessories Go wild with faux fur, but keep it feminine with a blushing pink theme. It looks fabulous on moody black or blue bed linen, or go for a full-on icemaiden effect with a snowy white set.

ountrywide Pianos has been proudly serving both the local and wider community and we have developed from small beginnings to become the ultimate premier showroom in the South- East of England. The piano’s magical sound is created by the player pressing any one of its 88 keys, which creates a note. This happens through a complex hammer-on-string mechanism, which needs to be perfectly regulated and tuned. In the 1900’s a piano which played by itself, by reading a punched out paper roll, was all the rage. Today pianos are sophisticated musical instruments, which may not only play themselves but can be enhanced by full orchestral and vocal parts – in essence providing a live orchestral performance in your own sitting room. Today the punched out paper rolls have been replaced with the very latest digital technology, incorporated within a real acoustic piano, which can be played as a regular piano. Seeing, however is believing and a visit to Countrywide Pianos for a full demonstration is recommended. Our showroom is an array of both new and pre loved pianos with a price range to suit all pockets -from the upright piano to the very largest of full size concert grand piano, self player pianos, ‘Silent’ Yamaha pianos, together with recognition of being a Kawai real and digital Piano Selection centre you really will find it fun making your choice and for those who may need assistance there is always help and advice on hand. Being perfectly located just 35 minutes outside of London with our own FREE car parking right outside the door, shopping is made easy and enjoyable. The Winter Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair T
21-26 January 2020, battersea Evolution, battersea Park
he Winter Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair goes through the looking glass for inspiration this January as the Fair Showcase celebrates Alice in Wonderland: an adventure in decoration. The Fair Showcase is a professionally styled space in the entrance Foyer, created by the Organisers to highlight the many design disciplines for sale at the fair, drawing on stock from exhibitors. In this instance, the display will demonstrate the humour and fun of accessories often found throughout the fair: Alice in Wonderland will be a whimsical homage to John Tenniel (1820-1914), marking the bicentenary of the illustrator of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. It precedes a major exhibition at the V&A in June. The first of the three annual Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fairs of 2020, the Winter event kicks off the New Year with a bright and beautiful bang: 150 specialist antiques, design and art dealers from across the UK and Europe take part. Exhibitors are resourceful in finding unique and special items to create and finish an interior scheme or a garden room. The show includes every discipline of antiques, fine and decorative art and 20th century design, dating from the 1700s to the 1970s, at a wide range of price points. Whatever room you are decorating – through the house and out to the garden – and in any style, there is something for everyone.
“The Winter event kicks off the New Year with a bright and beautiful bang” In January, The London Antique Rug & Textile Art Fair takes place up on the Mezzanine, with 18 dealers exhibiting colourful carpets, folk rugs, tribal weavings, and textiles from around the world. The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair has, over its 35 years, built a powerful reputation not just among the decorating trade and private buyers: top-tier antiques dealers (UK and international) are frequently seen shopping there, alongside the highest calibre of clientele and international collectors who also attend the most important art fairs worldwide. The relaxed atmosphere of the Decorative instils a charm and light-hearted enjoyment for visitors rarely experienced at other antiques fairs, and an excitement in knowing the unexpected is around every corner. www.decorativefair.com 58 JANUARY 2020

OSCAR WINNING
Gold award tops a year of achievements for Essex-based housebuilder
A
n Essex-based housebuilder, Higgins Homes, has added to its hugely successful year with a Gold award for the Best Development at the prestigious WhatHouse? awards. Often referred to as the ‘Oscars of the housebuilding industry’, the event is the largest in the country and celebrates the very best new homes. The host of this year’s awards at the Marriott Grosvenor House was astronaut Major Tim Peake together with comedian and television presenter Dara O’Briain. The judges awarded Gold to The Reserve, a development by Higgins Homes in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, after being tasked to find new homes that lifted the bar above the ordinary. The judges looked for developments that offered a stylish mix of original designs, top quality site layout and landscaping, a variety of external elevations and plenty of design flair both inside and out. The Reserve is an exclusive development of 90 homes of three, four and five bedrooms located on the edge of Lee Valley Regional Park. It forms a stunning gateway into the Lea Valley Regional Park with detached villas in a curved form. The judges commented on the well-defined formal avenue of dwellings, creating an intriguing and innovative layout that gives good progression towards the park and a sense of place. The judges applauded Higgins Homes on overcoming the challenges of the existing site and creating a variety of house types, each with contrasting elevational treatments that work excellently together in a crisp, contemporary way, with the subtle differences helping character identity. 80 JANUARY 2020
The judges were impressed with the interiors, which are designed as blank canvases to allow residents maximum flexibility. The open-plan living with large patio windows connecting out to garden spaces, also provide residents with a sense of well-being. “This is the crowning glory of what has been an incredible year for The Reserve,” says Jeremy Marcus, Sales & Marketing Director at Higgins Homes. “The response from buyers, the public and the industry has been fantastic and reflects the efforts from everyone involved in the creation of The Reserve.” The Reserve has won a number of other awards including the Building Futures Awards in Hertfordshire, First Time Buyer Reader’s Awards for Best Architecture, Highly Commended in the Best Family House category in the Evening Standard Awards and winner of the Best out of London Home in the Evening Standard Awards. Praise was given to Higgins Homes on not just the appearance of the development but also for its sustainable credentials including an urban drainage system that encourages biodiversity and helps wildlife to flourish. The environment is not just good for local wildlife, it also allows residents and the wider community the opportunity to enjoy features such as wetland areas including ponds and swales. The Reserve is the perfect combination of idyllic countryside on the doorstep with excellent commutability into the capital. The development is less than a ten-minute walk from Waltham Cross rail station, which is in Zone 7, and only a 26-minute train trip to Liverpool Street and just 21-minutes to Stratford, allowing buyers the best of both worlds.
