KEEPING AHEAD OF THE PENSION SCAMMERS I n 2019 there were 3.2 million victims of financial fraud, and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) reported that the average loss was £91,000. The FCA and the Pensions Regulator have been working to raise awareness of pension scams, as the latest research from the FCA suggests that 42% of pension savers – or over five million people in the UK – could be at risk from scammers.
Ways to spot a scam
Cold callers. This is the number one method for scammers to contact their potential victims. Despite government legislation banning cold calling on pensions, and a possible £500k fine, sadly this is still going on. If you are phoned, texted or even have someone call at your door offering a ‘free pension review’ and you don’t recognise the company, or their credentials aren’t watertight, then hang up, or don’t engage with them. Thankfully the FCA also report that 95% of unexpected pension offers are rejected. Too good to be true. Use your common sense. If the investment scheme you are shown is offering ‘guaranteed’ very high returns, provided you sign up within 24 hours then walk away. Take your time to check the details of the deal, and don’t be pressurised into making a hasty decision. Make sure they’re genuine. If your financial adviser only has a mobile phone, a PO box number and no office address, alarm bells should ring. Any reputable firm will be registered with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), and you can look at their register www.register.fca.org.uk to check that the firm you are dealing with is authorised. something goes wrong, and the firm isn’t authorised by the FCA you are unlikely to get your money back. Beware of ‘exciting’ investment opportunities. Scammers will often offer to invest your pension in what may sound like state-of-the-art schemes, in things like biofuels, renewable energy bonds or overseas property. These may sound persuasive and exciting but these ‘amazing deals’ are rarely what they say they are.
Don’t allow remote access. There are some horrendous accounts of people being contacted by fraudsters claiming to be from large organisations such as ‘BT Openreach’ who then get permission to install ‘security software’ on their computer or phone. They’re not your friend. Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in the way that they use psychological techniques to build up a rapport with their victim in order to influence their behaviour. If in doubt then contact their company independently to check, but never use the number you’ve been given by the people wanting to install the software. Most people tell themselves that they are clever enough to spot the signs of a pension scammer and that this would never happen to them. However the figures that are reported suggest that this is a real problem. Victims are left devastated by what has happened to them, so make sure that you and your loved ones engage with a suitably qualified adviser for advice on your pension pot.

LET’S CHAT OVER COFFEE Q&A with Matthew Hagger

raeside in Buckhurst Hill, Coopersale Hall in Epping, Normanhurst in North Chingford and Oaklands in Loughton make up the Oak-Tree Group of Schools. We talk to the Group Managing Principal, Matthew Hagger, about the current round of coffee mornings held with parents. Q: Tell us about the Oak-Tree Coffee Mornings. A: Between October and March each year there is a programme of informal Coffee Mornings for each Headmistress and me to chat with parents year group by year group at each school. These are useful for us to discuss various aspects of our education, with no set agenda, and to listen to feedback. This is the eighth year that these Coffee Mornings have been used to inform our school development plans as we continually look to enhance the service that we provide to our families. Q: What do the parents like to discuss? A: The sessions last for around an hour, so our parents have ample opportunity to bring up anything that they would like to discuss, no matter how small or large. We can discuss anything from the development of our extra-curricular activities programme to recent enhancements to the quality of the education. Some groups focus on particular themes such as our intensive preparation for senior schools for parents of the older Oaklands and Coopersale Hall children, or our careers advice and Sixth Form entries at Normanhurst and Braeside. Some questions will concern the school as a whole and others the class or individual.

Q: Which developments have come from Coffee Morning discussions? A: A few years ago a running theme in Coffee Mornings across the Group was about communication. Parents were asking for more, and for ways to make it easier for them to access our information. As a result we developed and launched a new website for each school, four interactive Apps for Android and Apple devices, text message reminders to parents and a textback service for electronic signing. We are always updating and developing these. We developed our Parent Portals for the sending of all reports, handbooks and documentation and launched an online Parents’ Evening booking system that has proved very popular. Recently, parents of younger children at each school have been asking for help understanding our modern teaching methods, so we have been arranging workshops to explain how we teach the various concepts in maths or our excellent phonics systems. Q: How do you follow-up the Coffee Mornings? A: I spend time after each Coffee Morning discussing ideas for development or points for consideration with each Head and relevant members of staff, before implementing new initiatives or tweaking aspects of our provision. The Coffee Mornings are very time-consuming as I now have around 30 of them each year across the four schools. However, I feel that they are incredibly important as I get to spend valuable time with hundreds of parents each year who have excellent ideas to contribute to our provision.

By Royal Appointment: What is a Royal Warrant? From piano tuners to opticians to a whip maker, the royal Warrant holders belong to an ultra-exclusive club.

ver since King Henry II gave a Royal Charter to the Weavers’ Company in 1155 for clothes and castle hangings, and William Caxton became King’s Printer to Edward IV in 1476, Britain’s tradesmen and crafts people have aspired to serve Sovereign and Court. Competition for Royal favour was intense and the Monarch had the pick of the country’s best tradespeople. By the 15th century, the Lord

Chamberlain, as head of the Royal Household, formally appointed tradespeople with a Royal Warrant of Appointment – a practice that continues to this day. In the 18th century, Royal tradesmen began displaying the Royal Arms on their premises and stationery. In 1840, the Royal Warrant Holders Association was formed. Its main objective is to ensure the continued existence of the Royal Warrant as a treasured and respected institution. It helps to administer applications for new Royal Warrants and changes to existing ones. The criteria for qualification are notoriously strict. Royal Warrant of Appointment – A crest that states “By Appointment To…” is a mark of recognition of those who have supplied goods or services to the Households of HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh or HRH The Prince of Wales for at least five years, and who have an ongoing trading arrangement. In the Prince of Wales’s case, they also have to “demonstrate that they have a workable environmental policy.” The Association is not part of the Royal Household, but belongs to its members. It advises members on everything to do with their Royal Warrants and assists with the correct interpretation and implementation of The Lord Chamberlain’s Rules, which govern the Royal Warrant. The Monarch decides who may grant Royal Warrants. These are known as the Grantors: HM

Everything from crowns to cutlery, confectionery to candles, silverware to silks, furniture to frying pans have appeared on Sovereigns’ shopping lists over the centuries, There are champagne houses and wine merchants, wheelwrights and gunmakers, luxury car manufacturers, tailors and kilt makers - the kind of luxury brands befitting of a royal family. Some firms have a record of Royal warrants reaching back over more than 100 years. Warrant holding firms do not provide their goods or services free to the Royal households, and all transactions are conducted on a strictly commercial basis.
Ever since Her Majesty the Queen left her wedding in 1947 wearing a pair of soft fabric Cornelia James gloves, she has remained loyal to the East Sussex-based glovemaker. The younger royals are not allowed to bestow warrants but, when they are, Cornelia James could be in line for a second, given the Duchess of Cambridge wears their fine merino gloves. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge left Buckingham Palace on their Wedding Day in the Prince of Wales’ dearly beloved Aston Martin DB6 MKII Vantage Volante. The Duke of Cambridge could have enjoyed the pick of the vehicles in Buckingham Palace’s Royal Mews, but he decided to drive his father’s favourite car. In June 2019, Swarovski UK, was awarded a royal warrant, which the company said in a statement, ‘is a significant honour, which acknowledges the quality of our product and reflects the ongoing provision of crystal to the British Royal Family.’ One of the newest jewellery houses to be awarded the honour, it was founded in 1895 in Austria. Swarovski designs, manufactures and sells the world’s largest highest quality crystals. Today, the company is run by the fifth generation of family members, with around 3,000 stores worldwide. Taste The Authentic Side Of Serbia With fresh produce in abundance, this Balkan state is becoming a top destination for foodies. JonJo Maudsley gets stuck in.
W
ith an emphasis on fresh, organic, high-quality ingredients, Serbia champions a farm-to-fork culture. No matter where you go, you are sure to come across exceptional flavours - and always in epic quantities. I start my journey in Serbia’s second city, Novi Sad. Overlooked by the striking 17th Century Petrovaradin Fortress, the old town unfurls like a labyrinth of intimate corridors and sky-high spires. No wonder it’s destined to be European Capital of Culture 2021. But the foodie highlights lie beyond the city, so I head 30 minutes south in the direction of Vinska Kuca Kovacevic restaurants in Krstasice. Featuring grapes grown in Fruska Gora National Park, I’m excited to sample their five-wine tasting menu (vinarijakovacevic.com; five wine tasting menu 2,900 RSD/£22 per person). I delight in their zesty 2010 Brut, their 2017 Orpheline Riesling and, with my gooey cream slice dessert, their 2017 Bermet - this secret Serbian recipe contains herbs and spices and was, I’m told, the dessert wine of choice aboard the Titanic. It’s at this table that I learn flavour is only half the story in Serbia; mealtimes here are as animated as Roman theatre battles. Forks probe from all sides of the table, stabbing at mounds of oozing goat’s cheese, crunchy vegetables and hunks of juicy sausage. Drinks are spilled, conversations get heated, and every morsel evokes the taste of the local, authentic side of local culture. I hit the road again. No journey through Serbia is complete without a visit to its capital, Belgrade, which is shaking off its troubled history to re-establish itself as a punky party city. With its contemporary coffee shops and ornate, antique architecture, Belgrade embodies Serbia’s ambition to establish itself as a top European destination - and that, of course, means plenty to delight the taste buds, too. I enjoy a wonderful dinner on the banks of the Danube at the historic Stara Carinarnica in New Belgrade (staracarinarnica.com; mains from 680 RSD/£5). The menu is rich with local fish, but before I’ve had a chance to consider it properly, I’m bombarded with samples of local rakia. What is rakia, you ask? A nostril-stinging, gutcleansing brandy, available in dozens of different flavours. Every Serbian, I’m told, starts their day with a good measure, and with so much delicious choice on offer, I can understand why. The next morning, I head further south into the Morava Valley. Here, I discover the Aleksandrovic Winery, one of the most renowned in Serbia - not only for its exceptional wine, but for the impressive history of the brand. After the original vineyard collapsed during the communist regime, it was revived in 1992 and now produces half a million litres of wine per year. My 40 FEBRUARY 2020
cellar tour concludes with a feast of fresh food and a six-wine tasting session, featuring the 2017 Prokupac, made with a unique Serbian grape, and the sumptuous 2018 Triumph, a sparkling wine often found at the table of the Serbian royal family (vinarijaaleksandrovic.rs; six wine tasting menu 2,900 RSD/£22 per person). I spend my final night in Belgrade at Ambar, a glam restaurant on the banks of the river Sala with a breathtaking view over the glitzy heights of New Belgrade (ambarrestaurant.com; eight course menu 2,900 RSD/£22 per person). On a weekend evening, expect to find it packed with the local hoi polloi sharing stories over rakia. Eight courses consist of warm breads and freshly churned dips, fried zucchini, pulled cabbage salad and beef sirloin, each with a memorable flavour that firmly establishes Serbia as my new favourite destination for fresh, local, organic (and, of course, delicious) food.

erry-toned lips have become a winter beauty staple and this year, they’re more relevant than ever, thanks to the AW19 catwalks. From deep merlot at Versace and Roksanda, to juicy plum at Simone Rocha and Tommy Hilfiger, to purple so dark it was almost black at Yohji Yamamoto - this season, the bold lip rules. But if you’re used to wearing nude tones or classic red, darker shades can be rather intimidating. “Lipstick is all about confidence and how comfortable you feel wearing it,” says Zara Findlay, pro make-up artist at Bobbi Brown. Here, Findlay explains how to find the best berry shade for you, plus three ways to wear the trend, and how to tailor the rest of your make-up...
Finding your perfect berry “I like to call this the Five Finger Trick. Pick up five berry lip colours that you’re attracted to - even if you don’t think they will suit you - in different finishes such as matte, sheer or shiny. Swatch them onto your finger tips and looking into a mirror, place each finger against your lip. You will instantly see whether you like the colour against your skin. Just think ‘yes, no or maybe’. This is all about the process of elimination. Clean off the lip colours that are definitely a ‘no’ and you are left with one or two to try. From there, you will be able to decide which is your favourite colour - or you may just end up taking them both.”

hortlisted for design et al’s 2019 International Design and Architecture Awards, Samantha Pope’s interior design for a high-end North London home included fully bespoke furniture in the formal sitting and dining areas. Designed by Samantha, the pieces were made to suit the international family’s living and entertaining needs. Balancing glamour and beauty with practicality, Samantha created fully made-to-measure furniture for the luxury sitting room – the main entertaining space. Opening into the equally impressive dining area, the bespoke 12-person table takes centre-stage. Around this, Samantha designed a wall-mounted drinks cabinet and a custom-built sideboard – hand-carved stained oak with a unique wavy texture – to hold the client’s collection of cutlery, table and glassware. Sumptuous finishes like Ziricote high-gloss veneer and pearlized oak, bronze details and specialist textures, all in a Mondrian-inspired block pattern, complete the luxurious look in this room. A bespoke dressing table in one of the bedrooms remains a firm favourite in the studio. Inspired by the daughter’s love of French furniture, Samantha and her team added a contemporary twist to the traditional kidney bean-shaped concept by using textured bronze

handles and faux croc against a high-gloss whitewashed oak. A sight to behold!
