Classics at the Castle 2014 – Motor Sport Dinner on 6th and Classics Event on 7th September 2014 at Hedingham Castle. Porsche has always been known as offering one of the best sporting experiences. e cars have for decades, symbolised style, elegance and driving panache. Porsche’s philosophy is that: “Not everyone’s idea of a perfect Porsche is a new one and not everyone’s idea of a “classic” Porsche is a perfect one.” On this special evening, Hedingham will be hosting the now annual Porsche Classics Motorsport Dinner which acts as a curtain raiser to the Porsche Classics at the Castle event on the following day. Hopefully there will also be an aerobatic show by a P51 Mustang – we take a closer look at this years event.

With tea parties all the rage at the moment, here’s one with a difference you will not want to miss. Sadia Ur-Rehman, Studio Artist at Valentines Mansion & Gardens is holding a series of very special tea parties with a twist to commemorate the centenary of World War One. Taking place in September, the events will explore the tea drinking habits which fortified the troops in the First World War. Guests will have the chance to share family stories they may have about the war over a fine cuppa and are also encouraged to bring along any mementoes they may have. In between dipping biscuits and feasting on cakes, games and activities themed to the ‘Great War’ will be enjoyed by all. Epping Forest District Council Communities team worked together to develop a programme to signpost young people to activities that were on offer to them in the Waltham Abbey area. e group delivered taster sessions in King Harold School on a monthly basis, these included: Dance workshops, futsal along with Way 2000 who came to promote the youth club on Brooker Road. As part of the project a tube map style leaflet has be designed to show the 41 groups that were available to young people to access in the area with the hope that the local young people with engage in positive activities and support their local community groups. e West Essex area is offering lots of fun, creative activities all over the district this summer holiday. ere’s something for everyone with workshops in dance, drawing, theatre, family events, animation and music – Michelle Harris brings you a fun and local program to help keep your children entertained during their Summer Holidays. Getting Ready TO START NURSERY? SCHOOL OR UNIVERSITY? WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

I

t’s been a beautiful July holiday and hopefully, most readers would have enjoyed a wonderful respite in some exotic location or holiday retreat. So whether you managed to get away to similar weather in other parts of the world – or you stayed at home to savour it here – as far as holidays are concerned, we’re now almost mid-way through August and most children are now either preparing for nursery, school or university. It’s not just the children or students who have to make the necessary changes, parents too are always involved to ensure everything is in place and the new, stricter regimes and promises are honoured. It’s Back to School…Routines… Schedules… Time-tables and even worse: Homework! For most parents, we’re all familiar with the routine. Checking the uniform still fits, the obligatory purchase of a new school bag to add a certain excitement to a date which most children dread. For some children, the onslaught of homework, teachers, detentions and examinations are not a new routine to get excited about! But for others, it’s about seeing friends, camaraderie and just catching-up on all the news. Assuming these children don’t have access to a mobile phone, iPad and/or a computer and therefore social media such as Facebook and Twitter! So what’s needed for the return?... UNIVERSITY Always worth checking vaccinations are up-to-date – especially for students going to university. Ensure that the MMR booster has been administered – every few years there are dangerous outbreaks of mumps and measles. Although they may sound like childhood illnesses, they are very dangerous and can lead to sinister complications. It’s always worth checking. A big shop at Sainsbury’s or Tesco for the obligatory kitchen essentials: kettle, toaster, iron – and why do they always add a 10

sandwich maker as part of the pack? is last item always fascinates me - what student makes toasted sandwiches? Am sure there’s one out there somewhere. Especially good are the Sainsbury’s stores in Loughton, Epping and South Woodford. Computer ink, paper, pens, perhaps a new battery for the computer, a laptop cooler as computers can be on for hours when studying (or on Facebook). Plenty of money in parents’ bank accounts to make regular transfers! NURSERY/SCHOOL A lot of children get ill in the first few weeks at school. e odd cough or cold here or there becomes a widespread problem when 20-40 (dependent upon the school) are crammed together in a warm classroom.

Uniforms and shoes that fit! Shoe shops are very busy at this point and your child’s shoes may need to be ordered. Always harder to cram this essential visit in after school. So best to be prepared and popping down to the shoe shop in plenty of time.

A selection of children’s presents for the imminent birthday parties. So when you’re in the high street and passing a supermarket or pharmacy, it may be worth picking up all these essentials before you need them.

T

he Oak-Tree Schools comprise Normanhurst School in North Chingford, Coopersale Hall School, just 2 minutes from Epping High Street and Oaklands School, long established as the leading prep school in Loughton.

Q: How do your schools perform academically? A: At our two prep schools Coopersale Hall and Oaklands, we prepare children for entrance exams to a wide variety of schools at 11+. Most get their first choice of school, whether selective or state, and many Year 6 children are spoilt for choice! At Normanhurst, our students sit GCSEs at age 16 and they consistently perform extremely well. Small class sizes allow more individual attention. Q: How do you keep in touch with what parents want from their children’s school? A: We hold informal Coffee Mornings for each yeargroup either in the Autumn or Spring Terms, and these are really useful for us to chat openly with parents and listen to their feedback. It’s good to hear how pleased the parents tend to be with their children’s progress and useful to discuss constructive ideas for further development. Q: What was new last year and what plans are coming up? A: Science features heavily on the curriculum, so we recently upgraded the Science areas at Oaklands and Coopersale Hall. Oaklands had a new library last year, and both Oaklands and Normanhurst benefitted from Kindergarten refurbishments. Normanhurst’s ICT Suites are being renovated over the

coming months. We constantly review the education on offer and are always expanding the enormous choice of before and after school activities at all three schools. Q: How does being a group of schools benefit pupils and parents? A: e three schools together have around 750 pupils and 220 members of staff. is means we can share best practice and good ideas more readily. We hold regular combined events, such as the September Group Year 3 camp night, Group Art Exhibition, and Oak-Tree Music Festival. ese offer excellent opportunities for the pupils and help to bring the schools together. Q: How useful are Inspection Reports for parents? A: Being inspected by a team of fellow professionals is challenging, particularly as we are given only 5 days’ notice of a visit. is means we have to be ready all year round and so are constantly developing our education and all three schools regularly gain ‘outstanding’ and ‘excellent’ comments at. Parents should read inspection reports in detail as an independent review is invaluable for judging a school’s performance. Q: Can prospective families see your schools in more detail? A: Although our official Open Days are in October and March each year, prospective families are welcome to arrange a private tour with the Headmistress at any time. ‘OUR WAR’ TEA PARTIES AT VALENTINES MANSION & GARDENS

W

ith tea parties all the rage at the moment, here’s one with a difference you will not want to miss. Sadia Ur-Rehman, Studio Artist at Valentines Mansion & Gardens is holding a series of very special tea parties with a twist to commemorate the centenary of World War One. Taking place in September, the events will explore the tea drinking habits which fortified the troops in the First World War. Guests will have the chance to share family stories they may have about the war over a fine cuppa and are also encouraged to bring along any mementoes they may have. In between dipping biscuits and feasting on cakes, games and activities themed to the ‘Great War’ will be enjoyed by all. Dubbed the Queen of Tea for her love of the beverage, Sadia’s fascination with cultural tea customs and how a good cuppa brings comfort and people together led to the start of her travelling tea party. Since the launch, Sadia has hosted a series of unique, dynamic, and internationally themed events, where participants are taken on a journey exploring and sampling fascinating teas, rituals and traditions as far and wide as India, Persia, North Africa and the Far East. Games are played adding excellent entertainment and a great talking point for guests. “e idea for the tea parties came about from my own love of the beverage and how a good cuppa can be the setting for a really good conversation. I wanted to create a space where strangers could connect and engage over a conversation and I thought about an activity that all communities and cultures shared, and tea drinking seemed apt.” And it gets better! e ‘Our War’ tea parties are completely free to attend. Sadia has worked in partnership with Eastside Community Heritage to bring you these events which have kindly been funded by the Redbridge Arts Grant in commemoration of the Great War. e events are suitable for adults and can be booked on-line through www.hidden-histories.org.uk or by calling 020 8553 3116. Sadia Ur-Rehman is one of eight artists practicing from the wonderful studios at Valentines Mansion & Gardens. e 300 year old grade II* listed country house situated in Ilford, Essex was restored in 2009 with Redbridge Council and Heritage Lottery funding. As part of this extensive project, the top floor of the Mansion, historically the servants quarters, were transformed into six contemporary studios for local artists and craftspeople. Here you’ll find a great mix of artists and mediums – a talented painter, creative stained glass, ceramic and pottery artists and innovative new media artists. Normally a private workspace, the artists welcome the public a few times a year for Open Studios. With free entry, this is the perfect opportunity for visitors to browse the studios, meet the artists and see how their work is made. Demonstrations take place during the day making this a fun day out for the whole family and also a great chance to pick up some unique handmade gifts. e next Open Studios will take place on Sunday 23 November between 11am and 3pm. have Richard Attwood (unfortunately Hans Hermann cannot attend due to illness), the winning driver who delivered the first outright win for Porsche at the Sarthe circuit in 1970, as well as the original Porsche 917 race car in which they achieved this significant victory. Richard has been a constant supporter of Classics at the Castle but also many Porsche Club events going back as far as Althorp and Highclere. ere will also be a Parade of special cars from the Porsche Museum with a selection of Porsche KG and Porsche AG “Classics”. A

t a recent afternoon tea, I asked some dear friends Pam and Leon, their thoughts on the most interesting places to visit outside of the normal holiday destinations. We discussed at length our favourites and they suggested I should compile a top 5 for this month’s column. So after much thought and with consideration for the many cities travelled throughout my wanderlust days – these are the firm favourites and especially if you enjoy walking around interesting cities: 1. JERUSALEM Jerusalem is and always will be – my number 1. ere is the most incredible feeling in this most holy and spiritual of cities. Most people who visit are touched by its magic and the tangible pull that brings you back and connects with you on a cultural, religious and personal level. ere is no other city in the world like Jerusalem, however as each experience is unique to the traveller, the only way to know just how special, this wonderful city really is… you need to visit. If looking for some recreational respite, the best shopping arcade is Mamilla near e Old City, however take plenty of Euros/Sterling/Shekels – the shops are wonderful, the merchandise is irresistible and everything is exorbitant! 2. NEW YORK New York buzzes with a 24/7 pulse. Vibrant, dynamic, unrelenting in its ability to enthral, excite and stimulate: whether shopping, architecturally, theatre or dining. If going to New York, it really is imperative to stay in Manhattan and if possible, to see a show on Broadway. I saw e Producers in London and on Broadway. Broadway was much better! 3. ISTANBUL Istanbul is the only city which belongs to two continents: Asia and Europe. If going to this fabulous city, it is essential to visit Sultanahmet (Old City) as most of the famous, historical sights are located in this part of Istanbul. Most interesting places are: e Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace (including the Harem) and the Grand Bazaar. Haggling is essential and expected so don’t be shy…

4. ST. PETERSBURG St. Petersburg is architecturally beautiful and has one of the best museums in the world: the Hermitage. In total, 88 films have Venice in them.* I sometimes go just for the day. Sounds strange albeit a strenuous exercise. As most of the readership for this magazine is relatively near to the M11, Stansted is not a difficult destination. On certain days, Ryanair have their first flight to Venice at 0630 (FR792) and the last return flight is at 2230 (FR799) so with just a handbag, fan, Euros, passport, keys, map and tissues – Venice is the perfect venue, for a delectable lunch… Worth looking out for ticket promotions but be warned, parking in the short term car

As part of the project a tube map style leaflet has be designed to show the 41 groups that were available to young people to access in the area with the hope that the local young people with engage in positive activities and support their local community groups.

An hour later, she carefully cuts me out and massages in any oil remnants. Changing Peoples' Lives... BY ASH PARMAR FUNCTION For some people, having a great looking smile is a very high priority. However, for other people improving the function and the ability to chew and eat properly is important. In this article, I will focus on the importance of teeth in function.

MY GRANDMOTHER My grandmother is over 90 years old. When I visited her recently, I asked her to remind me how many teeth she had left in her mouth. She replied: “Two”. She also does not like dentures. erefore, my poor grandmother is forced to function with just two teeth. Due to her overall health, she is unsuitable for dental implants at her age. e interesting thing is that my grandmother can eat most things; she has trained to chew as best as she can with the gummy part of her mouth. However, she has to be careful chewing food, and cannot enjoy eating harder foods. Last year over dinner on one occasion, my mother also reminded me of the importance of keeping your own teeth. She said to me: “Ash, you must tell your patients to look after their teeth. As people get older, one of the main pleasures of life is to enjoy good food. Having healthy, strong teeth is very important…” PROBLEMS AFTER LOSING BACK TEETH Molars, or the back teeth, are very well designed for chewing and eating. ey are strong (as

they have multiple roots), and they have a large surface area on the biting surfaces. When someone loses a back tooth, a number of things happen. e opposing tooth can gradually over-erupt as it no longer has a biting antagonist. e tooth behind the gap also begins to tilt forwards. ese unfavorable teeth movements can cause bite problems in the future. e other thing is that bone loss occurs after removing a tooth. If a dental implant is placed two months after an extraction, then this will actually preserve the bone and avoid it shrinking away. LOOSE TEETH Many of my patients in the past have been treated successfully for loose teeth. If someone has loose teeth, especially at the front, they are limited to how they can bite and therefore they cannot eat confidently. By treating the gums can tighten up the teeth. We then carry out a treatment called splinting, which involves linking teeth with some fibre and white filling material. is really improves the strength of the teeth and tightens them up significantly. is simple, innovative treatment is cost-effective and can prolong the life of teeth by many years.

DENTURES Many people wear dentures successfully if they have multiple teeth missing. On the other hand, some people cannot get on with plastic, removable dentures at all. Dentures can be quite stable if there are some teeth to anchor on to. is then makes it more comfortable to eat harder foods. If there are no teeth present, then dental implants can really help secure a denture and improve the function significantly.

rban Myth. Quite an odd name for a company specialising in kitchen design, until you think about it: ere are so many urban myths surrounding kitchen design that it actually makes sense. It’s pure urban myth that there is a particular style of kitchen suited to a particular style of home, I mean, how many Victorian semis have you seen that still don’t have an indoor toilet, a fitted bath or a shower cubicle, mains electricity or a flat screen television? Stands to reason then, that you don’t need to have a traditional kitchen. You can have a modern one if you want. It won’t look out of place, even if your dining room has wood panelling, in this day and age you’re fairly unlikely to be eating mutton curry by gas light. More likely is that you’ll want to embrace the modern trend of an open plan, social household. You’ll want a kitchen that simultaneously works as a food preparation, dining and social space. Somewhere the cook of the house isn’t hidden away while preparing a meal but kept entertained by the rest of the household. A place to eat, play, relax, entertain, study and well, pretty much do anything you want in, except maybe playing golf. We don’t advocate that in your kitchen. SO, URBAN MYTH, WHO ARE WE? ‘LOSE YOURSELF’ AT THE LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL 13TH-21ST SEPTEMBER 2014

N

ow celebrating its twelfth year, the Festival aims to celebrate and promote London as the design capital of the world, and as the gateway to the international creative community. e theme for this year is ‘Lose Yourself ’, inviting visitors to indulge in 300 events and installations in the many locations, activities, destinations and experiences on offer. A major part of the London Design Festival’s programme is the presentation of Landmark Projects. is year, the Festival has commissioned a major project in Trafalgar Square in collaboration with Airbnb*. Four highly acclaimed designers have been invited to dream up their interpretation of a room within a home that you would not want to leave. ese rooms will be created as four separate structures in Trafalgar Square, all identical on the outside, with each ‘house’ interior reflecting the individuality and personality of each designer. e creations will be open to view from ursday 18th-Monday 22 September. e Festival will continue its unique collaboration with the world’s leading museum of art and design, the V&A, and will again house a broad range of commissioned activity which will be spread throughout the Museum and include installations, events, talks and workshops. Designers, Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, have collaborated with BMW to create a remarkable and memorable experience in the V&A’s Raphael Gallery. Barber & Osgerby have designed ‘Double Space for BMW’, a kinetic sculpture that creates an immersive experience for the viewer. Barber & Osgerby have long been fascinated by aerospace, automotive and maritime engineering and their V&A project reflects this interest. Two mirrored silver structures will be suspended in the centre of the gallery and will epitomise BMW’s own technological innovation and precision. e choreographed movement of the giant structures will distort the view of the Raphael cartoons on display, the architecture of the room and the viewer’s perception of the space. In 2014, there are six official design districts during the Festival. Each district is organised locally and independently with endorsement from the London Design Festival. THE DISTRICTS NOW COMPRISE: Brompton Design District e Brompton Design District in South Kensington is the longest standing, comprising of temporary exhibitions as well as a variety of product launches and installations in the local cluster of design shops and galleries, all within walking distance of the V&A. Participating partners include e Conran Shop, Skandium, Cassina and Squint, amongst others. Late night opening on ursday 18th September. Chelsea Design Quarter e Chelsea Design Quarter is made up of interior design showrooms located in and around the southern end of King’s Road and Lots Road, including Lapicida, John Cullen Lighting, Roca Gallery, e Rug Company and more. Participating partners will be staging demonstrations, workshops, talks, debates and exhibitions, with a specific programme of events taking place here on Monday 15th September.

U nlike French windows and sliding patio doors, bi-fold doors consist of three or more doors that fold back on themselves and sit flat against one or both walls, depending if they open in the middle or at the side. ere's no way around it, they look at their most spectacular spanning a whole wall, or even walls, and w hen the weather's nice, you can fold them back to open up the most stunning entertaining space. e cost of the doors will vary, depending on the size of the opening, whether the doors are a standard size or made to measure, and what they're made of (typically wood, UPVC or aluminium). Companies that make bespoke bi-fold doors often install them and provide a guarantee, giving you convenience and peace of mind. Bi-fold doors are most effective when the floor and ground level on either side of them is the same. is may involve some work in the garden, but it will improve the indoor-outdoor flow and increase the 'wow' factor, especially if you use the same, or similar, flooring inside and out, perhaps slate tiles. Inside, the new doors may mean you have to replaster, redecorate and move things, such as radiators, sockets and switches, but p lanning permission isn't usually required. at said, there are exceptions. For example, planning may be needed for homes on 'designated land', like conservation areas check with your local council if in doubt. If your home's listed, you'll need listed building consent from the council to fit bi-fold doors, and if you live in a leasehold flat or house, you may need the freeholder's permission. If you fit the doors yourself, or get a builder to do it, it's vital to get the work checked and signed off by a building control inspector, either from your local council or a private firm, to ensure it complies with building regulations. e easiest option is to use a window and door company that can self-certify their work complies, such as companies belonging to FENSA (www.fensa.co.uk). Either way, you'll need a building regs certificate for the doors, otherwise you may have a problem when you try and sell your home. Unless you have an existing window/door that's the same as, or bigger than, the size of the opening required for the bi-fold doors, a new lintel will have to be fitted above the opening for support. Your first step (at the planning stage) should be to consult a structural engineer, or use a reputable window and door company to supply and fit the doors. It should carry out a survey and then do whatever's necessary to make your home structurally sound. But, what you may not have expected was for Mandy & Peter Stevenette and Martin Rumbelow, of the Epping Office, to allow themselves to be put in the stocks! Not only were they securely held in this ancient symbol of shame and ridicule but visitors were encouraged to hurl wet sponges at them! Why on earth would they do that you may say and, of course, it was all for a very good cause the Scouts, Guides and other youth groups of the village. e Donkey Derby is an annual event held on the Green at eydon Bois with the star attraction – apart from throwing a wet sponge at your favourite estate agent of course – being the donkey races themselves. With seven races, including e Stevenette Stakes, across the afternoon there was ample opportunity for a quick flutter at the tote in support of your favourite donkey or jockey! Actually, the Donkey Derby became a feature in Epping Forest during the 1800’s following a Government Act of 1878 which saw the Forest handed over to the Corporation of London in order to prevent the Lords of the Manor ‘enclosing’ it for themselves. Shortly after, refreshment outlets sprung into existence and were supported by carousels, swing-boats and donkey rides. Gerald Buxton of Birch Hall, eydon Bois, was concerned for the donkey’s welfare and so introduced the idea of the Donkey Derby with its focus of encouraging donkey owners to take care of their animals. With the sun shining and music providing the backdrop this years event pulled in visitors in their droves. ere were all sorts of stalls surrounding the main event ring, a BBQ for those finding themselves a little hungry or thirsty, fair rides, a raffle and a fun dog show. In fact, everything you need in order to enjoy a wonderful family time in support of your local community. But back to the stocks and a comment from a, by now, very wet Mandy Stevenette: “All of us at Stevenette & Company are passionate about the area in which we work and live. When the opportunity came along to support the eydon Bois Donkey Derby we didn’t hesitate but what on earth prompted us to add the idea of the stocks I’m not sure!”
