If you a relatively talented artist, living in Brentwood and looking for inspiration and other like-minded individuals with whom you can share the creative experience, than you should consider joining the Brentwood Art Society. Founded in 1958, the Society is a vibrant and successful organisation that brings talent together to share and develop their collective interest in the visual arts. Most of the members are people who paint seriously as a hobby. e membership is selective, wanting to be a member is not enough – you have to be accepted…. Currently there are over forty members with new members joining every year however quality of work is of paramount concern. Brentwood Art Society is a member of the Brentwood Arts Council and e Society for All Artists. e chair is Anna Hughes, who is determined to build upon the excellent contributions made by the many past, hard-working members plus there are great plans for the Society’s future, in the 21st century. Let’s be frank, any business-owner will know that the last few years haven’t been easy. How is it, then, that a group of local businesses have been successfully helping each other to profit (and boosting the local economy in the process) for the last eight years? With 26 members - and counting - Chigwell Business Group (CBG) is one of the most established and dynamic business networking groups in the area – we take a closer look at this local, dynamic business group. As we continue to be intrigued about UFOs, aliens, whether they do or do not, walk among us; whether the stuff of Hollywood or writers’ fantasies is a real threat but still, despite the cynicism, most of us still look up at the sky and wonder: What If? e Ministry of Defence has just declassified files and allegedly, on October 10th, 2008, four lights were seen above a house in Buckhurst Hill. So do the aliens have a map of Buckhurst Hill? In another feature which we published a few years ago entitled: Ziggy Stardust and Aliens in Essex, Michelle Harris researched sightings in our areas and again, Buckhurst Hill was there: 15th June 2010 - Buckhurst Hill - Strange orange objects in sky. Similar descriptions were also given from a Wanstead resident on June 5th 2010. (is sighting together with other similar events happened over a few days). Continue to enjoy the warm weather and we look forward to seeing you again in August.

Speaking to e Society’s secretary, Margaret Hurst, she commented: “Due to the sessions with tutors, we run courses, for people who have experience in hard work. It is challenging and it is inspired. We work together on a theme and at the end of the course, have a critique on each other’s work. We find this is helpful for on-going artwork. On ursday, we generally have a live model (without a tutor) but in the main, we offer good practical, painting sessions. Rather than lots of talks and demonstrations as other societies do, we emphasise on the practical. “We have a rota of tutors so we have a variety of people to work with. We have had three new people do short courses this year. Apart from that, we have an interesting Easter weekend painting workshop at the school where our theme was small and large, so we used very big paper and overhead projector to enlarge artwork. at was different and interesting.” In addition there are painting weekends, which are held twice a year: May and September Practical sessions are held on Mondays and ursdays at the Hardy Amies Art Studios at Brentwood School from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Regarding new memberships, Margaret added: “We are always looking for new members and would be pleased to hear from anybody who would interested in joining.” ere is a competition in November and dates are being agreed as the magazine is going to print. THE SECRET OF LOCAL BUSINESS SUCCESS? Let’s be frank, any business-owner will know that the last few years haven’t been easy. How is it, then, that a group of local businesses have been successfully helping each other to profit (and boosting the local economy in the process) for the last eight years? With 26 members - and counting - Chigwell Business Group (CBG) is one of the most established and dynamic business networking groups in the area. We spoke to Chairman Carl Belle (of Belvoir! Lettings) to determine the secret of CBG’s success. How does CBG work? We meet every Friday to talk about our businesses and the type of clients we are looking for. We then look for ways to introduce members to contacts who need their services. We might do this through contacts we already have or by keeping an eye out for new business leads for each other in the coming weeks. We’re all networking all of the time – sometimes without realising it – and every business owner has an ever-growing list of contacts. Research shows we are much more likely to do business with people we know, like and trust – as anyone who has ever attempted cold-calling can testify to! CBG simply expands the network of people who know and trust you and will recommend you to others. How long have you been a member of CBG and how

has it helped your business? I have been a member of CBG for two years. On my ﬁrst visit I was struck both by how supportive members were to each other and by how many business leads were being generated. CBG just seemed to have the right balance of being welcoming and professional. Many members achieve up to 50% of their new business via CBG membership, and CBG has helped others expand their entire business model. It isn’t just about referrals – it’s also about making connections that will enhance your business, either by allowing you to provide extra services or simply by learning from the valuable industry expertise of other members. It is unusual for a local business networking group to remain so active for so many years. What makes CBG diﬀerent?

Carl Belle e thing that makes or breaks any group is the people and personalities within it. e members of CBG are professional, hard-working business owners who genuinely want to support fellow local businesses. Members regularly get together outside of the ‘formal’ breakfast meetings to both socialise and discuss business. What are your tips for successful networking? If you approach networking with an attitude of how you can help others, rather than how they may be able to help you, you’ll ﬁnd that you make better connections. Don’t ‘sell’ to the people in the room, it’s about getting them to sell you to their contacts. Never dismiss anyone. It’s not only about who they know, but who their contacts know. ey might not be able to help you immediately but they might just be the person who introduces you to your biggest

When We Reflect Our Choices HAVE WE MADE THE RIGHT DECISIONS? WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

here’s a wonderful analogy for life… An American philosophy professor presented his class with a jar, some golf balls, pebbles and beer. Filling the jar with the golf balls he stated they represented the important things in life such as health, family, work and responsibilities. He then put the pebbles in and they filled the gaps. He then explained these represented smaller issues, your hobbies, what you enjoy doing and how you work these around your priorities. Finally he tipped in some beer. is he stated – meant there was always time for a beer with your friends. For more examples, check out YouTube – Golf Balls, Pebbles and Beer. I agree with this analogy as it certainly gives an important perspective; what you do with your time and how it should be divided up into three main areas. So although I don’t drink beer with my friends (other than shandy per other feature!) – I do enjoy a cup of tea. In fact, despite a heavy work schedule, endless meetings and commitments for weeks in advance, I ensure making time to meet with good friends; to hear their news, to talk seriously but also to enjoy interesting conversation and especially, that we should share some laughs and plans for further recreation and adventures. It was on one of these little jaunts at Mary Green Tudor in Brentwood, whilst I was with a very dear friend, Joy Moon of Paper Moon Communications sipping tea and sampling a scone, that I reflected upon a past relationship. We discussed interesting places and as Joy is a well-travelled intellectual, I enjoy listening to her thoughts and opinions. She mentioned Australia and New Zealand and memories flooded back like a tidal wave of events; a special time in my life when I worked abroad in Egypt and in particular, a handsome and dashing officer from the New Zealand Air Force with whom I developed a wonderful relationship and almost married. I had visions of talking to sheep for company (more sheep than people in New Zealand) pining for a French croissant or feeling tearful if I saw pictures of Big Ben or a double-decker red bus. So as the summer kicks off, we begin to relax, take time off for holidays and eagerly jump off that treadmill which for most of us is the daily grind. is is the perfect time to take stock of what we’ve done with our lives, what we should have done and are yet to do? Or perhaps still have time to rectify? It’s all about a stock take and taking time to relax, cut-off from the schedules which turns days into months, years into decades… Holidays are wonderful – they may be expensive but they punctuate our lives with milestones and enable us to have focussed memories of specific good times either within couple relationships or as a family with our children.

In doing so I could not help marvel of the fact that I have been fortunate to have lived through one of the most fantastic eras that the modern world has ever seen, particularly in relation to technology and sport. If only Estate Agency could follow the aforementioned examples. I say this due to my recent experience as a client selling a Prime London Property. Having appointed one of the areas top Estate Agents as my Sole Agent, agreed their valuation, which would assure me of a quick sale, and their commission rate of 2%, and oﬀered a bonus of £15000 to the negotiator who ties up the deal. Here I am some six weeks on without an oﬀer let alone a buyer. e reason being? THE INTERNET. Agents today, as I am sure those of you who are seriously seeking a new home have

realised, are relying purely on a response from the property listing on the company website and ,with very few exceptions, have not built a relationship with their potential buyers. raditional Speech Day and Prize Giving ceremonies have marked the end of another successful academic year for all three of the local Oak-Tree Schools. Marquees were erected in the grounds of Oaklands School in Loughton and Epping’s Coopersale Hall School, with Normanhurst School using the suitably large Chingford Assembly Hall for its evening Speech Day that incorporated a very impressive Art Exhibition. Oﬃcial recognition for pupils’ eﬀort, attainment and progress are important parts of school life, and the capacity audiences of parents were delighted by the proceedings. e Guest of Honour at Coopersale Hall School this year was Mr Phillips Idowu MBE, British triple jumper, who spoke to the school and gave out the prizes. Mr Idowu addressed the children in particular by explaining how hard he had to work at school in Hackney to achieve such a high level of success as an international athlete in the Olympic and Commonwealth Games and European and World Championships. He had kind words to say to all the prize winners and was particularly interested in the Athletics Report by Athletics Captain Joe Penman.

In addition to the many academic, sports and performance cups and shields, Neil and Gaye Sjoberg of Epping Golf Club bestowed the prize of an annual golf club membership to the best boy and girl golfers in the school, won this year by Alice Holland and Jonathan Billington. s we continue to be intrigued about UFOs, aliens, whether they do or do not, walk among us; whether the stuff of Hollywood or writers’ fantasies is a real threat but still, despite the cynicism, most of us still look up at the sky and wonder: What If? e Ministry of Defence has just declassified files and allegedly, on October 10th, 2008, four lights were seen above a house in Buckhurst Hill. So do the aliens have a map of Buckhurst Hill? In another feature which I published a few years ago entitled: Ziggy Stardust and Aliens in Essex, I researched sightings in our areas and again, Buckhurst Hill was there: 15th June 2010 - Buckhurst Hill - Strange orange objects in sky. Similar descriptions were also given from a Wanstead resident on June 5th 2010. (is sighting together with other similar events happened over a few days). On a personal note – I am intrigued. I wonder how Ancient Worlds were able to achieve some incredible feats of engineering – were they inspired from an intergalactic intelligence? Will we ever know for certain? Part of the intrigue is the excitement of the unknown, where anything is possible… And I must confess, sitting in my garden on a cool, refreshing evening, sipping a chilled shandy and looking up at the stars, I do wonder – Is there somebody/something looking back at me? However if you take away the romanticism and imagination, what are the other explanations? Do we sometimes see lights which are optical illusions? e planet Venus has been the mischievous entity that has caused rather a lot of confusion.

Jacque Vallee wrote in 1966: “No single object has been misinterpreted as a ‘flying saucer’ more often that the planet Venus.” I’m not saying that every supposed sighting is a reflection but apparently, it’s proven to be the culprit in quite a few. Everything in the universe is constantly moving. Venus is between 25 and 162 million miles away but images or reflections can be impossible to judge in relation to place. It is virtually impossible to judge the size, speed and distance of an unknown light. Robert Sheaffer (columnist for Skeptical Inquirer Magazine) and UFO investigator told Discovery News: “ere is a long history of Venus (or other bright planet or star) being perceived as something that it isn’t.” He also noted that during World War II, B-29 crews repeatedly reported ‘balls of fire’ which turned out to be Venus. Even Jimmy Carter reported a UFO in 1969 which by coincidence, turned out to be in the same place as guess what?... Venus. So what’s the truth? Are these explanations a Governmental cover-up? Are there secret files which only a select few have access to? Do Governments work together to ensure that most of us will never know the truth in case of panic? Or are these Governmental Heads aliens themselves working on an inter-planetary scheme to take over the universe? As a creative that needs emotion and imagination to fuel the fantasy, I’ll opt for the latter. Looking up at the sky and wondering What If? is far more exciting than thinking that a strange light or phenomenon is actually a planet’s reflection…

re you planning an exotic beach holiday to the Caribbean or another exotic location? Rome, Paris, Florida… there are so many wonderful places to really enjoy your summer holiday. Wherever you are planning on going, make sure you are fully prepared and packed. Be sure that you have packed all your holiday essentials. You should bring with you a travel first aid kit. Places like Boots (South Woodford or Wanstead) should definitely have one. is is a must. If you are planning a holiday to somewhere exotic make sure that you have an insect repellent spray and an insect bite cream. If you are planning a beach break, bring with an adequate supply of sun cream with a high Sun Protection Factor (SPF). If you have fair skin you should take sun cream that is a minimum of SPF 40. You can find a selection of different brands of sun creams from Boots in your local High Street, Superdrug, even Tescos or Sainsbury’s. e brands Piz Buin, Garnier and Nivea provide protection from the sun at reasonable prices or for more expensive, Avene is terrific. You should apply sun cream regularly to your body throughout the day and apply the sun cream at least twenty minutes before being in the sun to allow the cream to absorb into your skin. If you are planning on swimming at the beach be sure to apply sun cream to your back as I know one unfortunate incident when a boy did not apply enough sun cream to his back and ended up with third degree burns! e thought of lying in the sun to get a golden tan is very tempting but do not sacrifice your health and well-being for it. e consequences of lying in the blazing sun to get a tan could mean that you end up with sun burn which is damaging for the

skin; premature ageing and wrinkles and possibly even skin cancer. It is not worth it in the long term. e safest way to get a tan is to use a self-tanning lotion or spray, there are many branded products available at Boots and Superdrug. Loreal and St Tropez do a range of products at reasonable prices. If you do get sun burn while you are away, make sure that you regularly apply after-sun cream and moisturiser to the area. Creams with Aloe Vera will be cooling for the skin. If you are taking a beach break, pack hair conditioner in your case to keep your hair soft as sand can dry your hair. You should also pack a sun hat and your favourite Jackie Kennedy style sun glasses in your beach bag. Also do not forget to take your favourite book and Ipod! Jackie Collins is easy reading while you are lying on the beach drinking your favourite cocktail! To keep cool on the beach, take a travel sized fan with you. ese little essentials can turn unbearably hot into bearable. On a recent cruise, an American oﬀered me £20 for a 99p fan! If you want to save room in your case bring travel sized bottles and ﬁll them with your favourite toiletries and creams. Also be sure that you buy travel sized products, do not be tempted to take what toiletries you already have to save money as this will take up unnecessary space in your luggage. You must also remember that you are not allowed to bring toiletries and liquids in your hand luggage, you must pack them in your case. Other things to think about before you are going away are travel insurance and to check with your Doctor if you need any vaccinations before you go. But the most important thing of all is to make sure that you have fun! “Happy Holidays…”

Andy Murray wins the Championship in Historic Style Andy makes glorious history by winning Wimbledon 2013, nearly eight decades after Fred Perry won his last of three titles at The Championships in 1936. Andy Murray defeats Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 The frenzied scenes witnessed during the 2012 Olympics last year were a once in a lifetime….or so we thought. It took just 11 months and Britain made sporting history at Wimbledon.

a smile as wide as the sky. Murray celebrated with the crowds, so he could exchange high-fives. He moved to embrace Djokovic – and then sank to the turf, kneeling, his head on the ground as if in prayer. On this most public of stages, it was an intensely private moment.

An immense silence engulfed the Centre Court on Sunday 7th July. Three agonising Championship points had escaped Murray’s grasp, and now he had earned a fourth by rescuing a rally. He did not know it, but this was his time. No Briton had won the men’s Wimbledon title since Fred Perry in 1936. Destiny was at Murray’s shoulder, and this would be history.

15,000 people in the Centre Court were chanting his name. By now the presentation party was all but ready, only now could Murray summon the strength to reach the people he cares about the most. Making the time-honoured climb to the players’ box, he embraced them all, an acknowledgment of a debt repaid by all sides to all others. He did not stop shaking his head until his fingertips touched the golden trophy. If his eyes saw the inscription upon the ancient cup, he will have read the words: “All England Lawn Tennis Club Single Handed Championship of the World.” It is the very grail of tennis, and it belongs to Andy Murray.

Whilst retaining signature Christian Louboutin interior features including its red carpet and niched alcoves on which the product is presented. The concept captures the spirit of Christian Louboutin combined with a quintessentially British twist to celebrate Louboutin’s theatricality whilst offering the customer a unique shopping experience.

London landmarks are skilfully incorporated into the space; an intricate white fanned arch-way entrance reminiscent of Covent Garden Opera House creates an impressiv ve shop window whilst traditionally styled white street lamps act as shoe display areas throughout the space. Wall displays dis of bespoke tiles, evocative of the original London Underground walls, act as a colourful backdrop for collections which are perched 42

upon shelving fabricated from illuminated light boxes. At the rear, paying homage to Big Ben, a giant etched glass clock face illuminates the space against the arched windows of the store. Divided into two distinct areas, the private shopping room is rev vealed behind a mirrored doorway y. The use of the brands signature red within soft furnishings and the tiled wall combined with the low lounge seating creates an intimate space. A wall created entirely of cabinet shelv ves es in a warm wood, peppered with antique handle details, displays a selection of exceptional archive pieces from across the designers career lit by the celebrated Crystal Bulbs from the Lee Broom collection. Elsewhere, signature pieces from the Lee Broom collection were selected by Louboutin to furnish the space including items from the Salon range, re-worked in patterned materials and a new colour palette of deep purples, greys and dusky pinks. Anyone for a Pimms? The Pimm’s tradition is almost as entrenched in British culture as the cup of tea. All it takes is a prolonged period of good weather, and nothing beats a glass of Pimms on a summer’s day. imm’s is most popular in Britain, particularly. It is one of the two staple drinks at Wimbledon, the Henley Royal Regatta and Ascot. A Pimm’s is also the standard cocktail at many polo matches.

History of Pimms Rewind back to a London oyster bar in the 1840s where owner James Pimm, a farmer’s son from Kent, invented the thirstquencher. Using gin, quinine and a secret mixture of herbs, Pimm served up the brew as an aid to digestion, in a small tankard and the No. 1 Cup moniker was born. Pimm’s No. 1 Cup is based on gin and can be served both on ice or in cocktails. It has a dark tea colour with a reddish tint, and tastes subtly of spice and citrus fruit. It is often taken with “English-style” lemonade, as well as various chopped fresh ingredients, particularly apples, cucumber, oranges, lemons, strawberry, and borage, though nowadays most substitute mint. Pimm’s can also be mixed with champagne (or a sparkling white wine), called a “Pimm’s Royal Cup”. 50

Pimm’s began large-scale production in 1851 to keep up with sales to other bars. The distillery began selling it commercially in 1859 using hawkers on bicycles. In 1865 Pimm sold the business and the right to use his name to Frederick Sawyer. In 1880 the business was acquired by future Lord Mayor of London, Horatio Davies, and a chain of Pimm’s Oyster Houses was franchised in 1887. After the Second World War, Pimms extended their range, using a number of other spirits as bases for new cups. Pimm’s No. 2 Cup was based on Scotch whisky. Pimm’s No. 3 Cup is based on brandy. Phased out, but a version infused with spices and orange peel marketed as Pimm’s Winter Cup is now seasonally available. Pimm’s No. 4 Cup was based on rum, currently phased out. Pimm’s No. 5 Cup was based on rye whisky, also currently phased out. Pimm’s No. 6 Cup is based on vodka. It is still produced, but in small quantities. The original No. 1 cup still reigns supreme in popularity.

Pimms Recipes TRADITIONAL PIMMS NO.1 Take one slice of orange, lemon, apple, cucumber per person and one sprig of mint and add to two parts lemonade to one part Pimms. TURBO PIMMS NO.1 As above but five parts lemonade, two parts Pimms, one part gin. ENGLISH PASSION PIMMS NO.6 Take a shaker 2/3 full of ice and add 50ml of Pimms No.6, 25ml of Zubrowka vodka, flesh and juice of a passion fruit and a dash of sugar syrup. Shake well and strain into a tumbler full of ice. Garnish with a sprig of mint and two short straws. MAXIMUM VOLTAGE PIMMS NO.6 Take a shaker 2/3 full of ice, 50ml of Pimms No.6, 25ml of Zubrowka vodka and 25ml of Cointreau. Shake well and strain into a highball full of ice. Fill with soda water and garnish with mint. If mixing your own Pimms sounds too much like hard work, head to one of the many pubs and bars in London which serve up Pimms with a healthy dose of fruit, ice and garnished with a sprig of mint.

he British asparagus season is in full swing, but hurry - there's just six weeks left until it's off the shelves. Keeley Bolger unearths TV chef Marcus Bean's top tips for making the most of this special vegetable. Like love, a perfectly brewed cup of tea and the next series of Downton Abbey, some things in life are worth the wait. And they include British asparagus. With a season spanning roughly eight weeks a year, British asparagus is a flighty friend. So flighty that you may be flummoxed as to what to do with these lean, green shoots. But before you resign yourself to another helping of fail-safe broccoli, TV chef Marcus Bean has plenty of top 'tips'. "I love asparagus. e possibilities are endless," he says. "It's just about knowing a few recipes to make the most of it." Self-taught cook Bean rose to prominence in 2010 when he won Channel 4's culinary competition Iron Chef UK. Today, he's a regular on ITV daytime programme is Morning and often serves up dishes to hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield - including a recent asparagus and rocket salad.

Bean has teamed up with the British Asparagus campaign in a bid to encourage more of us to enjoy the home-grown delicacy, and has handed over some of his favourite recipes celebrating the humble spears. But with the clock ticking, he's eager for everybody to snap up a bunch while we can. "It's such a long process to cultivate our asparagus but when it's right, it's just so good and so healthy that it's a shame not to eat it," says Bean, who lives in Shropshire with his wife Jenny and two asparagus-loving daughters. Bean says: "To get your kids to eat asparagus, try chopping it into little pieces and sauteing it with other veg. My kids love having them as soldiers with dippy eggs instead of toast." While the fruits of the British asparagus growers' labour may only be around for a limited period, Bean thinks that it's a pity for us to turn to cheaper imports. "ere's such a massive diﬀerence in quality between the Peruvian asparagus you can get all year round here and the British asparagus that you can only get for a short time," he says. "Asparagus is one thing we do really well as a country.

Someone sent me a message the other day saying that they went to the supermarket and British asparagus was right next to the Peruvian asparagus, only the Peruvian one was priced a lot cheaper. "We don't want to get to a point where people buy foreign asparagus which is of a lesser quality but cheaper. at means that the farmers will be priced out of the market and won't grow it over here, which is a real shame." For Bean, who often crops up to do cookery demos at the BBC Good Food roadshows around the country, the beauty in asparagus lies in its versatility. "My favourite way of cooking it is to have it chargrilled," says Bean. "Blanch it in some boiling water for about 30 seconds to one minute max, pop it out and put it in some ice water to keep the colour. en just chargrill it in the pan. "Or you can just bang it on the barbecue. Give it a quick brush with some oil ﬁrst then stick it on. Be careful not to overcook it otherwise you lose that lovely green colour. Or you could have it blanched or steamed. Or with butter and wild garlic. It's making me hungry thinking about it!"

To mark this latest chapter in the marque’s 109-year history, a special collection of Ghost and Phantom family models, conceived and designed by the Rolls-Royce Bespoke team, will be released during 2013.

he Home of Rolls-Royce Collection celebrates the meticulous design, engineering and craftsmanship employed in the production of every car that leaves Goodwood. and following the release of a design sketch illustrating the Bespoke design and conception process, a rare glimpse into the skill of the marque’s master craftspeople and unique manufacturing processes is presented today. “The Home of Rolls-Royce Collection showcases what makes Goodwood a unique centre of manufacturing excellence,” said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “A perfect blend of traditional crafts, cutting-edge technology and world-class Bespoke design has driven our success over our first 10 years. In this time, Rolls-Royce has taken its place as maker of the world’s pinnacle super-luxury good, an achievement built on the passion and commitment of every craftsperson employed at Goodwood. This beautiful collection is a fitting way to celebrate an extraordinary decade.” A ‘celebration’ motif, presented in hand-crafted marquetry on the frontfascia marks this landmark year in Rolls-Royce history. Using methods akin to the artistry of fine furniture makers, the effect is achieved through a process that marries cutting-edge technology with traditional

craftsmanship. Individual pieces of wood veneer are laser-cut to ensure precision. A craftsperson then painstakingly assembles the sections, ensuring they perfectly express the vision of the marque’s Bespoke design team. A fastidious process of quality control follows, utilising the world’s most accurate measuring tool – the human eye. In 2012, a second successive record year for the marque, over 3,500 hand-built Rolls-Royce cars, exclusively created at Goodwood, were exported to all five continents. This is celebrated throughout the collection with a compass motif that expresses the Home of Rolls-Royce’s position as a global centre of manufacturing excellence. The pattern is also intricately embroidered into the armrests and console lid. 112,533 stitches are applied by precision embroidery machines that make 1,000 individual stitches per minute – however, such is the complexity of the pattern it takes over an hour to finish each individual piece. Co-ordinates engraved into tread plates, the bezel of the Spirit of Ecstasy and umbrella handles further express Goodwood’s place as the only manufacturing centre for the world’s pinnacle super-luxury marque. A hand-painted coachline, culminating in a half-compass motif completes the exterior. Forming

the final stage of a week-long, 22 stage painting process, coachlines are hand-applied by one highly-skilled craftsman using squirrel hair brushes. Normally this takes three hours – however the intricacy of this very special Bespoke design means the time taken to complete the process doubles. The Home of Rolls-Royce Collection cars are currently being hand-built at Goodwood. Final images of the completed cars will be released in the second half of 2013. However we have new details about the upcoming Home of Rolls-Royce Collection. The highlights of the collection are – 1 A compass motif expresses the Home of Rolls-Royce’s position as a global centre of manufacturing excellence. The beautiful motif on the glove box has been created from 11 different types of wood including Sycamore, Holly and Satinwood. These represent the different woods that have been used in Ghost and Phantom interiors since 2003. Each piece of virgin wood has been milled and sanded by hand before being carefully coated with 5 layers of lacquer. 2 20,000 wood veneer combinations are available in every Rolls-Royce. Each veneer created by the craftsman’s hand of the Bespoke team is totally unique to the customer. All of veneers are stored in a humidor which is kept at 25 degrees and 80% humidity to allow the wood to breathe and remain supple. Each veneer spends a minimum of 3 days in the humidor, before being fitted into a Rolls-Royce.

3 While continuing to use traditional woodworking skills, the craftsmen applied lasers to ensure total precision in the alignment of each of the 170 separate pieces of wood along with the metal inlay. 4 The Home of Rolls-Royce Collection Phantom embroidery comes to life with 112,533 stitches which are applied by precision embroidery machines that make 1,000 individual stitches per minute. But due to the complexity of the pattern it takes over an hour to finish each individual piece. 5 The Spirit of Ecstasy comes from the Home of Rolls-Royce Collection. cars, which highlight the exquisite craftsmanship found at Goodwood. The inscription on this special Spirit of Ecstasy references the position of their plant. 6 Each car undergoes a 22-stage process which uses more than 100 pounds (45.5kg) of paint. The Home of Rolls-Royce Collection offers 44,000 individual exterior paint colors to choose from. 7 In all, 60 pairs of hands take 400 hours to construct every Rolls-Royce motor car. 8 Also 450 individual leather pieces are cut and fitted to each Rolls-Royce Phantom. 9 And 672 metres of thread is used in every Home of Rolls-Royce Collection Phantom. 10 Lastly, there are precisely 58 layers to every Phantom wood part.
