GET YOUR CHILDREN READING THIS SUMMER! hether on the beach or at home, some children will need no encouragement to pick up a book this summer. However, for many, it is the last thing they will do- turning a page won’t happen until they are back at school in September. It has been proved that British literacy rates plummet during the summer months as children do not consider reading a leisure time activity. Chorleywood Bookshop is trying to redress this balance and is behind a number of simple initiatives. Bookshop owner, Sheryl Shurville, explains: “We have discounted many of the summer reads to make books more aﬀordable. We are running children’s reading groups and story-time on Chorleywood Common throughout the summer ( Tuesdays at 10am) and we have got together with Vintage Books for the third year to oﬀer a Buy One Get One Free deal on many of their beautiful classic titles for both adults and children.’ The BOGOF deal begins at the beginning of August and lasts for three weeks. It is launched with the unveiling of a magical window display based on one of the Vintage titles. ‘Many of the regular customers will remember last year’s simply beautiful window which was based around The Secret Garden. The year before we won an award for our window based on the Mad Hatter’s tea Party from Alice in Wonderland. This year we are taking Treasure Island as our theme so come along and see the window you’re in for a few surprises!’ Chorleywood Bookshop and Vintage Books have a long history of supporting initiatives that promote literacy. The publishing company was behind the launch of the first ever World Book Day in 1998. A £1 book voucher is handed to every child in the UK and the charity is now so firmly established it is celebrated in 100 countries around the world as the biggest annual event promoting the enjoyment of books and reading. Chorleywood Bookshop also supports their Quick Reads

initiative, a series of entertaining, fast-paced books written in a pared-down style by bestselling authors with the aim of reaching out to adults in the UK with reading diﬃculties. In a recent survey 90% of adults using Quick Reads said that improving their reading had made them feel better about themselves. ‘We are proud to be involved with Vintage and we hope that children will take advantage of the BOGOF deal and discover the joys of some forgotten classic titles,’ says Sheryl. ‘Some children might have heard of The Railway Children and Wind in the Willows because of recent films and plays but the majority will never have heard of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, Kidnapped by R. L. Stevenson or Heidi by Johanna Spyri, books that the older generation all enjoyed as children. The Beaconsfield Country Fayre helps to restore the Bishops Chair

he Beaconsfield Country Fayre has been running for seven years since its inception in 2007 and as we are coming up to our eighth year it is worth reflecting on the money the Fayre has raised last year for local charities and how this was spent. Since last year The Country Fayre has given grants of £5,000 each to Iain Rennie Hospice at Home and to the Friends of St. Marys. The Rotary Club, Round Table and Lions Club will each have received £1,667 which is then used to fund local charities such as The Youth Club at the Curzon Centre, the Seniors Luncheon held every Thursday at the Curzon Centre and The Splash project at Alfreston School; the funds given helped to fund a new swimming pool – see http://www.alfristonschool.com/f eatures/project-splash.html The Fayre came together when in 2006 various community groups were looking for a late summer event in the Old Town to rival the May Fair. The idea was to organise a day which every one would enjoy and at the same time raise money for local charities. Seven years on and the Beaconsfield Country Fayre now

attracts 5-6,000 people. The Stretcher Race is the main event of the day where teams of four carry a fifth all dressed in fancy dress around a gruelling course of 8 pubs (watering holes) where the teams stop for a half! There is also a children’s race where teams of four carry a teddy bear, or suitable fluﬀy toy, along a shorter course in Windsor End stopping for drinks! Other attractions this year include a giant inflatable slide, climbing wall, a fire eater, numerous craft and food stalls, the great balloon race, Classic Cars, children's entertainment, all accompanied by live music provided by the Phoenix Jazz Band. The jazz band has an interesting history in that it is made up of doctors who all happened to be musicians and on duty on the night the tragic Kings Cross Station fire occurred in 1987. They now give up there time to perform a fundraising events, like the Beaconsfield Country Fayre. Beaconsfield’s answer to Crufts will be returning this year and the very popular Dog Show will again be judged by a member of the Kennel Club. New this year there will be a flying display of birds of prey. Each Year the Fayre also

provides free stalls to charities and local community groups such as Food for the Hungry, Brain Tumour, Inner Wheel, British Legion/ Royal Artillery, Beaconsfield Old Town Residents’ Association, Historical Society, London Run for the Homeless, Alpha, Helen and Douglas House. All benefit from the increased awareness and donations received on the day. The Beaconsfield Country Fayre receives a huge help form Iain Rennie Hospice at Home and the Friends of St. Marys, and in turn these two local charities have benefited from the funds of almost £30,000 given to each over the years. This money has been a huge help to these charities and for Ian Rennie Hospice at Home, these funds equate to 220 full days of specialist palliative nursing. £30,000 would also buy 32 syringe drivers necessary to administer symptom control medication or a combination of these and other costs necessary to provide the 24/7 service. This is a huge help to families where the charity believes that every adult and child with advanced, progressive life-limiting illness should receive the care they need to live as fully as possible at home or wherever they choose to be, to the very end of their life.

The Friends of St. Marys look after the building and monuments of St Mary’s and All Saints Church and this year’s donation will be used to restore the Bishops chair. The Bishops Chair was given to St Mary’s Church by Benjamin Disraeli on his ennoblement as the Earl of Beaconsfield in the late 19th Century. The idea is to have this ornate guided chair refurbished by Bucks New University Furniture Restoration Department using the funds provided by the Country Fayre and once restored put the chair on display in Chair Museum. The Beaconsfield Country Fayre will be held on Bank Holiday Monday, 25 August 2014 from 11am to 4pm in Windsor End and the Fayre will be opened by Celebratory Baking Queen Mary Berry

A FOCAL POINT AT CHELSEA oanna Bryant and Lyndsey Keeling at One Church Street Gallery in Great Missenden have a passion for contemporary lifestyle, both indoors as well as in outdoor spaces. This summer, the exhibition 'Focal Point', illustrates how sculpture can focus the eye and turn an outside space into a living, breathing work of art. Even the most traditional garden can embrace a modern twist, leading the eye down a path, heighten awareness of the surrounding space, and bring poetry or even a sense of humour to work alongside nature. The gallery was selected to demonstrate the possibilities of sculpture at both the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and at Hampton Court, winning four gold stars for their 'courtyard-style' garden at Chelsea this year. Garden wall pieces (water-cut from steel and aluminium) sat alongside a bronze owl, a giant stainless steel allium head, metal mesh figures and the female form 'Daphne'. At Hampton Court, a 2.5 metre figure in rusted steel towered over ceramic vessels and poetry inscriptions, whilst garden birds made out of recycled and vintage tins, settled on the beams and wooden uprights. Working with Sean Walter and his team at The Plant Specialist (a landscaping and design company with a nursery specializing in herbaceous perennials and ornamental grasses, located close to Roald Dahl's Gipsy House in Great Missenden), the dream was finally made real. The nursery is a surprising discovery for anyone seeking tenderly nurtured plants with a diﬀerence. The nursery

nestles into a spectacular Chiltern setting, oﬀering glorious views and an inspiring layout to whet the appetite for creative gardeners. The planting included Pulsatilla vulgaris AGM, Armeria maritima ‘Alba’ and Viola hederacea to complement the sculptures within a courtyard garden, constructed from pine sleepers washed with Lye. Around 300,000 people visit the two largest RHS flower shows. Sunshine and showers brought light and glistening raindrops, to enhance the beauty of the sculpture, whilst bees, and even the odd dragonfly dropped by, to enjoy the flowers and settle on the warm bronzes in the sun. Oﬀering an exciting choice of the most intriguing and inspirational contemporary art today, One Church Street Gallery represents a growing number of artists and sculptors, from all over Europe. A RARE COLLECTION OF PIPER’S WORKS INCLUDING PAINTINGS, DRAWINGS, AND CERAMICS TO GO ON DISPLAY AT THE RIVER & ROWING MUSEUM enley-On-Thames’ River & Rowing Museum announces rarely seen work by eminent local artist, John Piper, to go on display for a new permanent exhibition this summer.The museum will house a range of exceptional works by one of Britain’s finest artists, including ‘String Solo’, which was first exhibited at the ‘7 & 5 Society’ exhibition in March 1934. As one of his earliest works, this piece is an unusual example from Piper’s abstract phase. The River & Rowing Museum acquired the painting in 2002 from the Piper Estate, having been displayed as part of the John Piper Retrospective at the Tate in 1983. Housed in its original frame, as chosen by Piper himself, this is the first time the item will be on permanent display. From paintings to ceramics, the exhibition will display work donated to the Museum by the Piper Estate, including ‘Ruined Castle, Wester Braikie’. This timely retrospective by one of Britain’s best-known oﬃcial war

artists opens ahead of the Museum’s wartime centenary tribute to Henley’s contribution to World War I later in the summer. The Museum will display rare paintings and work that have been exhibited in the UK’s leading art galleries throughout the 20th Century. Neo-Romantic work, in response to the threat of invasion during World War II. Activities for everyone! A fun family-filled summer programme at award winning River & Rowing Museum

enley on Thames’ River & Rowing Museum is looking forward to the summer holidays by announcing an exciting range of workshops and exhibitions for adults and children. The exciting and interactive activities programme oﬀers children aged 18 months to 11 years the chance to learn new artistic skills and explore storytelling on the river through a whole range of opportunities. The Museum is running a special four-day Discover Art course, giving 7-11 year olds the chance to try artistic techniques across a range of media and ultimately attain their own Discover Art Award, all led by an expert tutor. Older children can also learn interesting new skills from a variety of artistic activities including model-making, 3D animation and rush-weaving and pre-school children can come and sing, play and create with ‘Taylor Tugs’ Holiday Happenings’ which returns this summer. The workshops aren’t just for children – adult activities include basket-making and willow painting, giving participants the chance to enjoy new creative skills and take home a momento to hang on the wall. Elsewhere, the Museum will highlight local artistic talent with the Oxfordshire Basketmakers’ exhibition exploring water-related themes of movement and river life using a wealth of natural materials. Macmillan’s Gerrards Cross and District Committee, the only Macmillan committee in south Buckinghamshire, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and during that time has raised over half a million pounds. A special celebration, The Candlelight Ball, will be held at Stoke Place, Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire on Saturday September 20th 2014. Tickets for this unique evening cost £50.00, which includes fizz on arrival, a three-course meal with wine, coﬀee and petit fours. There will be live entertainment and a disco. Along with a gift tree and live auction it promises to be an evening to remember which will raise much needed funds and all profits will go to Macmillan. Macmillan also funds financial advisors throughout the county, and of course the Support Line can be accessed by all. Cancer is one of the toughest fights most of us will ever have to face. All the money raised from The Candlelight Ball will go directly to people aﬀected by cancer. Just £27 could fund a Macmillan Nurse for an hour; £100 could pay for a Macmillan Grant to help someone with their transport costs for daily radiotherapy.

Of course, the early days will fly by in a routine of feeding, bathing and grabbing a few hours of much-needed sleep. As the child grows up however, there are many financial and legal considerations to think about alongside the more day-to-day battles, such as persuading them to eat their vegetables or tearing them away from the latest social media trend. According to an annual report from insurer LV=, the cost of raising a child and supporting them through university until the age of 21, is now over £227,000, which includes food and clothing, hobbies and education. Planning ahead and preparing for both the expected and the unexpected is something that the private client practice at B P Collins believes is essential. Senior associate Christine Moore, explains: “We know any parent will be completely focused on their latest arrival, but it’s important they take time out to consider how to protect and support their expanding family in the longer term. “There are many things new parents – and grandparents – can do at an early stage to help secure a child’s financial future, for example, by setting up a trust to pay for school fees, or dividing an estate in a particular way. “It’s also important that where there are already children from a previous relationship, careful consideration is given to looking after their best interests in the event of something

On the Saturday of the Grand Prix qualifications, Rory and I got up and set off on a weekend to remember. We were fast tracked through Gatwick Airport by the excellent No. 1 Traveller to get to our Monarch flights. The flight to Nice was a breeze and 45 minutes after hitting the tarmac, we were in the prestigious Paddock Lounge overlooking the qualification. Lunch was an excellent buffet accompanied by an exciting side-dish of the controversial Lewis Hamilton battle with Nico Rosberg to secure pole position. The service was simply excellent and the company great. The CafĂŠ de Paris is a splendid place to catch up on what is happening around the entire track on a large screen. We moved on to the Hotel de Paris terrace for Q3, overlooking the Massanet corner.

THIS KOP HILL CLIMB (SEPTEMBER 20-21) WILL BE CELEBRATING THIS YEAR’S EVENT WITH SOME OF MOTORSPORT’S MOST RECOGNISABLE ICONS. he historic Kop Hill Climb will take place on 20th and 21st September this year the organisers have announced. The revival of the original event, which takes place annually in Princes Risborough, is now in its sixth year.

During that time it has grown into an internationally recognised weekend for enthusiasts and families alike, and attendance figures have climbed steadily each year, topping 15,000 in 2013. Which is very good news for local charities, who benefitted last year from £55,000 in donations. 2013 saw Kop Hill Climb Ltd manage the event as agents for Buckinghamshire Community Foundation, an established charity, who distribute the funds. Kop Hill Climb has been fortunate to have the support of Fish Media Group Ltd over the last few years to publicise the event. The event returns this year with over 400 historic cars and motorcycles taking on the famous hill, and many more displaying in the Paddock. Vehicles range in age from the early 1900’s to modern day exotics, so whatever your preference there will be something for all. This is not just a static display, but also a recreation of Kop Hill’s glorious past. Both days will have morning and afternoon sessions where you can see the cars and motorcycles storming the hill. Moving history right before your eyes, especially from one of the Grandstands, which gives a unique vantage point. A Best of British display will feature as its centrepiece a 1924 GP Sunbeam that is still the holder of the Kop Hill Climb record established in 1925, together with not one but three ERA’s (English Racing Automobiles) from the 1930’s. Only 24 were produced. Kop Hill is one of the oldest Hill Climb venues in England. The first recorded races were in 1910. It became a major event on the motorsports car and motorcycle calendar and many famous drivers and riders of the time, including Malcolm Campbell, Raymond Mays, Henry Segrave and Count Zborowski raced up the hill. The last event was in 1925, when as a result of an accident to a spectator, the RAC banned all motorsport on public roads. Today Kop Hill is a public road, and is closed to traﬃc during the event. 48

Back by popular demand are Haurel and Lardy, recreating the legendary double act. Enter if you dare the Wall of Death. A children’s area, trade village and food and drink court all ensure there is something for everyone to see. Kop Hill ale will be back this year, after a runaway success since its launch in 2012. Other family fun and entertainment includes the Red Arrows simulator ride, the Racing Bug race track game and a vintage steam carousel and climbing wall. The Soapbox Challenge is open to competitors aged 10 to 17 to design, construct and compete in their own gravity-powered soapbox cart. Entrants will compete as teams of up to 6 members, and the soapboxes will be evaluated on their engineering and design just as much as their performance. Djokovic, the higher ranking player, appeared to struggle with injury at times but looked dominant in the three middle sets. Varicose veins are a common problem affecting at least 20% of the adult population in the UK. They occur when small valves inside the veins stop functioning correctly. Rather than blood flowing effortlessly back towards the heart, the blood stagnates within the veins causing aching,

Michael Gaunt tiredness and discomfort. At first, problem veins may not be visible but symptoms occur. Sometimes patches of blue thread veins may be the earliest signs of an underlying problem. Eventually, the abnormal veins may become swollen, enlarged and varicose. This condition can be embarrassing and painful. Varicose veins are usually blue or dark purple in colour and may also be lumpy or twisted in appearance. While any vein can be affected, varicose veins most commonly develop in the legs and feet – predominantly because standing and walking can put pressure on the veins in the lower body. WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER HAVING THEM TREATED? In the developing stages, varicose veins and thread veins may be primarily a cosmetic problem. However, if ignored, the condition can deteriorate and a variety of complications can occur such as leg swelling, pigmentation of the skin around the ankles and ulcers. Occasionally, veins can burst causing bleeding, or the blood within the veins can clot leading to the painful condition of phlebitis or even deep vein thrombosis. People who use air travel for work or holidays may be at increased risk particularly if those flights are long haul. IS THIS TREATMENT JUST FOR WOMEN? Certainly not, it can affect men just as much as it can affect women. Men tend to cover their legs up more, so the problem may be hidden away and ignored, with some men only seeking treatment when their veins become swollen and complications start to occur. It is important to target varicose veins before they become a problem, as without medical treatment some conditions may worsen. WHAT IS INVOLVED IN TREATMENT AND IS IT PAINFUL? Fortunately, modern, minimally invasive treatments can often be 56 3

performed under local anaesthetic as a walk-in, walk-out procedure. This leaves the patient with minimal postoperative pain with practically immediate return to normal activity. Michael Gaunt is a leading venous expert and has extensive knowledge of these procedures, having treated over 4,000 patients with the Endovenous Laser and ClariVein techniques. Both techniques are associated with considerably less pain, bruising and scarring than traditional stripping techniques. IS IT PERMANENT? Most modern techniques for treating varicose veins are associated with very good, long-term results. Not all visible veins in the legs are varicose veins. Often the appearance of thread veins is due to the effect of daily wear and tear on delicate skin and local treatments are effective. However, sometimes thread veins are an indication of underlying varicose veins which may not be visible on examination. Treatment of the thread veins will not be successful unless the underlying problem - for example the varicose veins - has been corrected first. Therefore, a thorough venous assessment is necessary before initiating any local treatment for thread veins. This could include injection microsclerotherapy or VeinWave therapy. Once underlying varicose veins have been treated or excluded, local treatment of the thread veins is much more likely to be successful. he Chilterns 3 Peaks Challenge returns for its sixth year in September, and hundreds of walkers will be taking part in the event once again, raising vital funds to support Rennie Grove Hospice Care. The annual fundraiser along the Ridgeway takes place on Sunday 14 September, and Rennie Grove is encouraging local residents to dig out their walking boots and sign up for one of the charity’s most popular challenges. As in previous years, participants have a choice of either a five, nine or 18 mile sponsored walk through the beautiful Chilterns hills, taking in Whiteleaf Cross, Coombe Hill and Ivinghoe Beacon, with all routes starting and finishing at Princes Risborough School. “By offering three different routes, it means there’s something for everyone,” says Gemma Martin, Events Fundraiser at Rennie Grove Hospice Care. “The whole family can enjoy a day out, including the dog! We live in such a scenic area and this is a great excuse to get out in the countryside and raise money for a local cause at the same time.” All walkers will experience the first two peaks by completing the five mile route from Princes Risborough to Wendover. Here, there will be a barbeque offering everyone the chance to purchase a tasty burger to refuel before the five mile entrants return to their cars on buses, kindly provided by Arriva again this year. The nine mile walkers will then be bussed to Tring to complete the additional four miles and climb the third peak of Ivinghoe Beacon. Transport will again be provided back to Princes Risborough School. Those individuals taking on the ultimate challenge of the 18 mile route – which proved to be the most popular last year – will continue walking at Wendover after the barbeque to complete the entire route on foot before catching a bus back to their cars. “We’re extremely grateful to Arriva for supporting us again this year by providing the buses and to their drivers who give up their own time to take participants – including dogs - back to their cars at the school,” says Gemma. “We really couldn’t host the event without them! “Last year, we had a fantastic turn out with more than 550 people taking part, raising over £30,000 - enough to fund a nurse for a year. This year we’re once again encouraging those taking part to raise as much money as possible, either by asking friends, colleagues or family to sponsor them or by holding other fundraising events like coffee mornings, cake sales or you could even wash cars in return for a donation! Get creative and come up with an idea that you know will appeal to your friends or colleagues.” “Every penny you raise helps ensure we can continue to offer our 24/7 responsive hospice at home nursing service and other support services which allow patients the choice to be cared for at home, safe in the knowledge that both they and their families will receive the help they need. Strawberry Semi Freddo seed tuille, mascarpone cream and strawberry sorbet What is more evocative of a British summer than strawberries and cream - there are many mentions of strawberries in medieval Great Britain when newlyweds enjoyed strawberries, borage and soured cream for their wedding breakfast believing them to be an aphrodisiac. The heart shaped fruit has long been a symbol of purity, passion, and healing and continues to be so today. it is but a brief time when the fruit is in season, from early June through to August. By far the best strawberries to buy have to be from a local producer. What better way than to spend a summer’s day out strawberry picking for delicious berries for this refreshing summer dessert with a twist of Italian!

ingredients (Serves 6)

Stock Syrup 200 g caster sugar 150 ml water ½ lemon zest and juice ½ orange zest and juice ½ vanilla pod 1 x star anise Strawberry Puree 3 punnets of English strawberries 25 ml water Juice of 2 limes 20g caster sugar Semi Freddo 100g strawberry puree 125g stock syrup 30g lime juice 2 leaves gelatine 12g strawberry liqueur 10g lemon juice 1 g Maldon salt 1 pod vanilla seeds Sesame Tuille 100g liquid glucose 100g inverted sugar 20g oats 10g sesame seeds 10g sunflower seeds 90

10g linseeds extra seeds and oats to garnish Macerated Strawberries 25g caster sugar ½ to 1 punnet of English strawberries sliced thinly 100g mascarpone cream lightly whipped

Method

Stock Syrup 1. Place all the ingredients into a thick bottomed pan bring to the boil then remove from the heat and leave to infuse overnight and then strain 2. Chill in the fridge until very cold. Strawberry Puree 3. To make the strawberry puree macerate 3 punnets of strawberries with the sugar, lime juice and water blitz in a liquidiser and then pass through a chinois Semi Freddo 4. Soak gelatin in water until

softened 5. Mix all the other ingredients and blend in a food processer 6. Place 200gm of the liquid with the melted gelatine and pass through a chinois 7. Cool and place in a cream whipper and pipe into a container lined with cling film and set in the freezer 8. If you do not have a cream whipper, whip 100ml of double cream, fold into the strawberry mixture gently and then freeze in the container.
