ylesbury Waterside Theatre’s annual offering has fast become a ‘must-do’ in the Christmas calendar with panto lovers young and old(er!) enjoying 2 hours of pure escapism. This year’s production is set to be no exception as festive wishes are ready to be granted as Aladdin comes to the stage from Fri 2 Dec 2022 – Mon 2 Jan 2023. Every pantomime thrives on a dastardly villain, and Davood Ghadami (EastEnders and Holby City) is putting on the baddie boots this year to play the evil Abanazar. He is in good company with two of Bucks’ favourites – funnyman Andy Collins (BBC 3 Counties Breakfast Show) playing the loveable Wishee Washee, and glamorous redhead La Voix (Britain’s Got Talent) playing Widow Twankey, the most sparkliest panto ‘mum’ with a powerhouse voice that will bring the cave down! FINDING IT DIFFICULT TO AGREE CHILD ARRANGEMENTS FOR CHRISTMAS?

t’s always better to agree child arrangements for Christmas with your former partner or spouse directly, and if you’re both making a compromise, it should make them workable for you both and your children, according to Ella Moxey, family solicitor at B P Collins. Although in certain situations it may be impossible to have direct communication, Ella offers some helpful tips on how to reach an agreement. 1. Always keep the children’s best interests at the forefront of your conversations. It may be challenging to engage in communication with your ex but your separation affects your children’s lives too and it is always better for them to have close, loving relationships with both parents and to see you both regularly. 2. Agree a date, time and place to discuss the arrangements. If communication is challenging, you may find it helpful to meet in a neutral space – or if that isn’t possible use indirect communication, such as email, and keep your language neutral and open. Make suggestions, not demands. If you think the discussions might be difficult, consider suggesting that a mutual friend is also present – sometimes it can be helpful to have a neutral perspective on matters. 3. Think carefully about the issues. These include the day-to-day arrangements, handovers, including timing and cost of travel, plans for telephone or video calls and schedules for trips abroad. Remember that in most circumstances, you will need the permission from the other parent to take your children out of England and Wales. 4. Allow for some flexibility in arrangements. You may need to accommodate both of your work schedules around the Christmas period, annual leave or that of any other relevant person – such as a new partner. Being too prescriptive with arrangements is not always beneficial and there may need to be some give and take. 5. Once you have agreed arrangements, think about creating a calendar or parenting plan and explain it simply and in an age-appropriate way to your

children. Do listen to their views and allow them to express their feelings. 6. At handovers consider inviting the other parent in for a tea or coffee. If you need to change arrangements, let the other parent know with as much notice as possible. Unless there is an emergency or unforeseen circumstances, you should not change arrangements frequently as this will be annoying, can cause distrust and is likely to be confusing to your children.

What Steps Can I Take to Remove an Executor of a Loved One’s Will? Following a loved one’s death, an executor will be nominated in the deceased’s Will to deal with the administration of their estate. If they died without a Will, personal representatives will be appointed to do the job that an executor would otherwise have done. For the purposes of this article, they will collectively be called “PR or PRs”. Where PRs are appointed to deal with an estate, beneficiaries may take the view that the PRs are not doing their job or not doing it property and there may be circumstances where they want to consider their removal. For example, • a conflict arises between the interests of the PRs and their own interests; • the PRs may be unwilling or unable to get on with the administration of the estate; • there has been a breakdown of trust and confidence between the PRs and the beneficiaries, which is impacting the administration of the estate; • there is an issue that needs dealing with urgently and before a full grant of representation can be obtained Renunciation If any of the situations above arise, it is entirely possible to ask a PR to “renounce” their position and waive their right to obtain a grant and if they agree to do this, the right to administer the estate will then pass to the remaining or substitute executor(s) or, if none, then the order of priority of persons entitled to administer the estate which is contained in statute. It is important that where an executor renounces his or her right to act, they should not have “intermeddled” with the estate in any way. Once a PR has intermeddled with an estate, the court will not accept their renunciation.

Formal Application to the Court Where a PR is unwilling or unable to renounce their appointment, it is possible to make an application for their removal either under section 116 of the Senior Court Act 1981 or section 50 of the Administration of Justice Act 1985. Section 116(1) of the Senior Courts Act 1981 (SCA 1981) provides that: ‘If by reason of any special circumstances it appears to the High Court to be necessary or expedient to appoint as administrator some person other than the person who, but for this section, would in accordance with the probate rules have been entitled to the grant, the court may in its discretion appoint as administrator such person as it thinks expedient.’ Here, the court has the power to pass over an executor even if they have intermeddled in the estate. Under the above provision, the court’s powers are flexible and so it not possible to set out an exhaustive list of what may be considered special circumstances. However, examples include: • Where the only persons entitled were old and infirm and wished to make a grant to their nominee. • To make grants in favour of creditors, where executors are missing or unwilling or unable to take out a grant. • To pass over missing beneficiaries with a prior right to administration. • Where the person with a right to the administration is under investigation for the murder of the deceased. Section 116(1) of the Senior Courts Act 1981 allows the court to replace the rights of someone who would otherwise be entitled to a grant of representation, in favour of someone else. However, it cannot be used to remove a PR who has already obtained a grant. In those circumstances, an application would have to be made under section 50 of the Administration of Justice Act 1985. This provides as follows: ‘Where an application relating to the estate of a deceased person is made to the High Court under this subsection by or on behalf of a personal representative of the deceased or a beneficiary of the estate, the court may in its discretion— (a) appoint a person (in this section called a substituted personal representative) to act as personal representative of the deceased in place of the existing personal representative or representatives of the deceased or any of them; or

(b) if there are two or more existing personal representatives of the deceased, terminate the appointment of one or more, but not all, of those persons.’ The court has complete discretion to make an order under this provision and unlike section 116 of the Senior Courts Act 1981, there is no need to reference to ‘special circumstances’ or it being ‘necessary or expedient’ to replace or terminate the appointment of a PR. That doesn’t mean that a court should not be satisfied that it should exercise its discretion in removing a PR but the bar appears to be lower under this Act. The provisions under the Administration of Justice Act 1985 can be used whether a grant has been obtained or before it has been obtained. An application under the Administration of Justice Act 1985 allows an application to be made by or on behalf of a PR or a beneficiary of the estate. The principles guiding the court on whether or not to make an order were summarised by Chief Master Marsh in Harris v Earwicker and were as follows: 1. It is unnecessary for the court to find wrongdoing or fault on the part of the personal representatives. The guiding principle is whether the administration of the estate is being carried out properly. Put another way, when looking at the welfare of the beneficiaries, is it in their best interests to replace one or more of the personal representatives? 2. If there is wrongdoing or fault and it is material such as to endanger the estate the court is very likely to exercise its powers under section 50. If, however, there may be some proper criticism of the personal representatives, but it is minor and will not affect the administration of the estate or its assets, it may well not be necessary to exercise the power. 3. The wishes of the testator, as reflected in the will, concerning the identity of the personal representatives is a factor to take into account. 4. The wishes of the beneficiaries may also be relevant. I would add, however, that the beneficiaries, or some of them, have no right to demand replacement and the court has to make a balanced judgment taking a broad view about what is in the interests of the beneficiaries as a whole. This is particularly important where, as here, there are competing points of view. 5. The court needs to consider whether, in the absence of significant wrongdoing or fault, it has become impossible or difficult for the personal representatives to complete the administration of the estate or administer the will trusts. The

court must review what has been done to administer the estate and what remains to be done. A breakdown of the relationship between some or all of the beneficiaries and the personal representatives will not without more justify their replacement. If, however, the breakdown of relations makes the task of the personal representatives difficult or impossible, replacement may be the only option. 6. The additional cost of replacing some or all of the personal representatives, particularly where it is proposed to appoint professional persons, is a material consideration. The size of estate and the scope and cost of the work which will be needed will have to be considered.’ Costs Where an application is made to remove PRs, CPR 44.2 applies. This confirms that the court has discretion as to— 1. Whether the costs are payable by one party to another; 2. The amount of those costs; and 3. When they are to be paid. If you considering making an application to remove an executor, you should be aware that whilst the general rule is that the unsuccessful party will be ordered to pay the costs of the successful party, PRs are usually entitled to an indemnity for the costs of any proceedings where they are bringing or defending claims in relation to, or on behalf of an estate in their capacity as a PR and so they will in all likelihood be able to recover their costs from the Estate where they are not payable by someone else unless they are seen to have acted unreasonably. ovember is a wonderful time to utilise the abundance of fresh game available. For this month’s recipe I have chosen one of my favourite winter dishes, game pie - using game birds however a dice of venison would achieve the same results and should a puff pastry topping not be to your liking you could replace it with suet dumplings placing them on top half an

hour before the pie is cooked with the pot lid on. We are extremely fortunate in the Chiltern Hills to have game readily available and can be purchased from farm shops, markets, and stalls. Game always features on the restaurant menu and proves a popular choice particularly when paired with a good bottle of red wine or even one of the many splendid winter ales from the nearby Chiltern brewery,

RECIPE: AUTUMN GAME PIE Ingredients - Serves 6 • • • • • • • •

2 partridges 2 wood pigeon 1 cock pheasant A knob of Butter Pinch of all spice 1.2 litres of game or chicken stock 1 tbs Cabernet Sauvignon vinegar 1 tbs red currant jelly

For the Marinade • • • •

1 tsp black peppercorns 1 tsp juniper berries 5 strips orange peel 1 bay leaf

1 sprig Thyme 1 bottle red Bordeaux wine 4 tbs brandy 150ml port 2 large carrots peeled then diced 2 cm cubes 4 celery sticks cut into 2 cm pieces 225 g chestnut mushrooms 225 g peeled button onions

For the pie topping • • • • •

450g bought puff pastry Or suet dumplings as an alternative 1 beaten egg Pinch of salt 1 tbs cornflour

Remove the legs and breasts from the birds and then de bone the legs and remove the skin (or get a butcher to do this for you) or as an alternative buy a pre diced game mix. Cut the partridge breasts in half, the pheasant breasts into 3 and leave the pigeon breasts whole cut the leg meat into medium sized pieces. Now prepare the marinade by placing the orange peel, pepper corns, juniper berries thyme and bay into a large saucepan with the red wine bring to the boil then reduce by half. Pour the brandy over the meat whilst waiting for the reduction. Once reduced remove from the heat and add the port. Allow to cool until tepid. Add the chopped vegetable, button onions and mushrooms to the wine mix then pour over your game and marinade overnight or 24 hours in the fridge. Pre heat your oven to 140C. Drain the game and vegetables from the marinade keeping the wine to one side. Lightly patting the game and vegetable mix dry with kitchen paper. Season with salt pepper and the allspice. Brown the meat mixture in a hot frying pan with the butter pouring a little of the wine in at the end to lift the residue and juices. Transfer to a casserole dish add the remaining wine mix and stock, bring to a simmer then place into the oven lid on for 2 and a half hours. Remove from the oven.

Pick out the orange peel and herb stalks. Strain off the liquid bring to a simmer skim off any impurities. 10. Add the red currant jelly and vinegar. Thicken with a little cornflour mixed with a splash of water. 11. Return your meat and vegetables into the sauce and allow to cool then put the mix in a pie dish glazing the pastry with beaten egg and a pinch of salt or if you are going to opt for the dumplings add them whilst the mix is in your casserole placing the pot lid back on and cook on for a further half hour. Bake the pie for 30 – 40 minutes until the pastry is golden brown. To Serve Serve in warm bowls with autumn greens and creamy mashed potato to accompany.

SHONKS features speciality malt which has been smoked over beechwood chips, imparting layers of smokiness into the brew. SHONKS takes its’ namesake from Piers Shonks, a local hero who defeated the Dragon of Brent Pelham, sparing the Hertfordshire village from a fate most terrible. As a Kölsch-style beer, Shonks has been crafted to be light in body and warmfermented with ale yeast, then conditioned at cold temperatures like a lager. Kölsch is a style native to Cologne in Germany, the same country where Tring has sourced their leading ingredient from. Smoked malt (or Rauch Malt) has been kilned over beechwood chips in Bavaria for centuries, used by master brewers to impart a smoky character to the region’s muchcelebrated beers.

The Kensington Wing’s highly experienced team of midwives welcome enquiries and the opportunity to discuss midwife-led care in more detail. These ‘meet the midwife’ sessions are always a relaxed and special time to talk and discover more without any obligation. For those women and birthing people who are appropriate for midwife-led care, the team provide full support throughout your pregnancy and the midwifery team are available 24 hours seven days a week for advice or concerns throughout your pregnancy, birth and postnatal stay. The consultant-led care package allows you the choice of one of their experienced consultant obstetricians to personally guide you through your pregnancy and birth. Your consultant provides continuity and individualised expertise throughout your journey. They build a relationship with you and your partner through the antenatal period to give you confidence to birth safely with them in line with your birth preferences. They continue to support you through the postnatal period, including your 6 week postnatal check. All consultants are available to meet you and your birth partner without any obligation. We need to know more about this to help prevent illness and disease from happening in the first place. We need to focus our attention here.” A Holistic Approach Seed’s Holistic Health Coach, Elizabeth O’Neil, works with her clients to prevent, manage, overcome and even reverse emerging health conditions using a 360 approach. Said Elizabeth, “A whole person is made up of interdependent parts and if one part is not working effectively, all other parts will be impacted. Therefore, in order to optimise our health,

we need to start viewing it through a wider lens.” At Seed, we use the 4 Pillars of Health – Relax, Eat, Move & Flourish - as a framework to help us understand where we need to focus to remain optimal. Exercise 1. Draw 4 pillars on a piece of paper 2. Name your pillars as follows – Relax, Eat, Move & Flourish 3. Think about / write down the different things you do in your life to address each pillar: a: Relax – how do you mitigate / release stress? b: Eat – how healthy is your diet? Are you getting the nutrients you need? c: Move – do you exercise regularly? Do you suffer with mobility issues or suffer with aches and pains? d: Flourish – how do you nurture your mental health and your relationship with yourself and others? 4. Give yourself a score out of 10 for each pillar 5. Prioritise your focus on the pillar that scored least and work up! hristmas is a very special time for residents and their families within the Fremantle Trust’s ten residential care homes in Buckinghamshire. Supported by the dedicated Wellbeing Team, our carers always strive to exceed expectations every day, by celebrating the uniqueness in everyone and every resident is given the choice to participate in and enjoy the festivities in the run up to Christmas, starting with the ‘Tree Decorating Day’ on 1st of December. From ‘Lights Switch On’ events, religious services and parties, to Christmas crafts, gift wrapping and card writing – encouragement and support is given to recognise different beliefs, religious and non religious. Christmas 2022 will be even more exciting as we welcome back local communities to join in with the celebrations with our residents who are looking forward to the seasonal food and drink, Christmas parties, Carol singing, staff shows, as well as visits from Santa and his helpers! The Fremantle Trust employ dedicated Wellbeing Teams who provide group and individual wellbeing visits all year round, to ensure mental and physical stimulation, promoting independence and inclusion to reach those, who due to health reasons, are unable to join in the bigger, group activities.

s we move into Winter, the mood this year is all about comfort. What we’re currently seeking from our homes is to feel calm, relaxed and cosy. They are our personal sanctuaries, designed for no one but those that live within them, and they’ve become spaces where we want to express our unique tastes, personalities and histories. The contemporary home says ‘come on in,’ ‘snuggle into this,’ ‘remember this?’ or ‘have a look at that.’ Combined with our ongoing love-affair with all things natural, the décor emerging for A/W 2022 is soothing, serene and simple, either touched by the organic or with the highly personal embedded into it. These interiors inspire peaceful nights in, thoughtful conversations, happy memories and the occasional wry smile. Here’s the Chapins’ edit of the best.

A NATURAL EMBRACE / GREEN UPHOLSTERY As well as the colours and physical reminder of nature we are bringing into our homes this season, it’s also a representation of how all things natural make us feel. The welcoming embrace of the great outdoors is represented interiors-wise by sumptuous upholstery, tempting textures and cosy sink-into-me cushions, which combined with verdant shades instantly switches the mind into unwinding mode. Sofas and chairs emulate nature in the simplest, clearest of ways, with grounded, unexaggerated tones touched by the forest spanning moss, sage, fern and firs. Their designs also nod to the bucolic, prompting memories of being outside while welcoming you into their cosy, calming arms to ponder the joys of it all. The refreshed take on Arflex’s classic 1970-designed Marenco sofa by Mario Marenco has not only natural colouring, but its plump cushions channel the comforting envelopment that being immersed in greenery can bring. GamFratesi’s Beetle Chair in 3D Veneer, a new wood-wrapped take on the iconic shell-shaped design, sees its rich velvet upholstery take on the characteristics of moss growing across timber. The organic-esque fabric on Giorgetti’s Montgomery chair by Dainelli Studio lures in the eye like a patterned plant, the grassy shade spreading from the seat onto the upper ash wood arms to extend the verdant feel, and simultaneously hard yet soft,

Moroso’s Pebble Rubble sofa by Front is designed to emulate rain-polished rocks covered in a layer of overgrown plant life to represent nature’s slow, reassuring rhythm.

LINE OF SIGHT / LINEAR PENDANT LIGHTS As the nights draw in and the curtains close, it’s time to think about lighting. The designs shepherding us through these darker days are based around simplicity. Not exaggerated. Not attention grabbing. Leading A/W 2022 are linear pendants made from elegant, slimline forms that range from the calligraphic, twisting and turning mid-air, to the steadfastly straightened. Such considered minimalism creates a soothing, easygoing space, one where the eye is pulled upward only momentarily and illumination appears as if from thin air. Decidedly minimalist, the Oneline by artist Kasper Friis Kjeldgaard for Fritz Hansen is a sleek slash of brightness which rotates 360 degrees to cast light in any direction. Moooi’s Gravity Chandelier by Paul Cocksedge is composed of elegant flexible arms which fall naturally in flowing curves, the shapes defined by where its glass shades are positioned. A pair of ultra-delicate rings, Lodes’s Elara pendant by Nika Zupanc is an understated representation of astral motion, its loops silently interacting with and orbiting each other. A suspended arc, Cattelan Italia’s Nahun

lamp by Studio Kronos feels almost typographical, as if drawn in the air with the sweep of a brush, the outer LED strip casting a diffused glow.

ON DISPLAY / GLASS DISPLAY CABINETS 2022 is the time to break those much-loved mementoes and treasured trinkets out of hiding. As part of crafting a home imbued with meaning and personality, we’re ready to put ourselves on display with the bevy of newly launched glassfronted storage pieces and curate our very own cabinets of curiosities. Transparent doors keep items safe and protected yet give them undeniable presence in the room, framing them and presenting collections to passers-by, declaring who you are and telling your story. The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Audrey cabinet by Pocci&Dondoli for Bontempi is composed almost entirely of extra-transparent glass, diverting all attention onto the objects placed within it. Gallotti&Radice’s Soda cabinet by Draga & Aurel adds to the display’s personality with its playful rounded shape and gold-toned glass, items on shelves interacting with its circular frame. ‘Like a small stage, rich in attention and details, Shibusa tells the story of personal passions’ confirms designer Mauro Lipparini, his cabinet an elegant combination of glass and ash.

A BIGGER SPLASH / TEXTURED GLASS When there is no need for glass to be transparent, designers are taking the opportunity to make it decorative and experimental. Transporting us straight to the shores of the sea, the foot of a waterfall or the reflections in a pond, this there’s a new vogue for textured glass ¬– steeped once again in our desire to be close to nature. Embracing the hypnotic yet soothing traits of water, pieces of glass are rippled and warped like sheets of water blown by the wind, expressions of deft craft skills as well as our collective need to bring the outside in. The surface of Cassina’s Esosoft table by Antonio Citterio feels like an angular slice of gentle river, its thick textured glass taking on the appearance of water softly brushed by a breeze. Bontempi’s aptly named H20 Coffee Table by Studio F+B Design forms a lonely puddle disturbed by undulating concentric rings, as if a stone has just been dropped into it, and Bonaldo’s blown glass Acquerelli Table Lamp by Marco Zito imitates a range of watery expressions, from icy frozen milk white to ripples full of intriguing movement.

Get your protractors out – angles are back. After years of yearning for circles, roundness and eschewing corners, sharpness and straight lines in the home, we’ve started to revolt. These aren’t your usual right-angled tables, it’s a whole lot more creative than that, with designers experimenting with balance, illusion and juxtaposition in materials soft and hard. Oh, and you can forget about the rules of gravity, too. Cassina merges precision and comfort with its Flutz chair by Michael Anastassiades, its sharp parallel aluminium sides sheltering a soft seat within. Unsurprisingly, Bonaldo’s Pisa coffee tables by Mauro Lipparini lean diagonally to the side, balancing themselves with an off-kilter surface or standing thin and tower-like. Square by Jonathan Olivares for Moroso blurs the boundaries between soft and hard, forming cushioned right angles and perfect lines in precise upholstery, while with its new Abat-Jour shade throwing more geometry into the mix, Vitra’s Potence wall lamp by Jean Prouvé shoots sharply upward, mixing the aesthetic of a wall and pendant light. chaplins.co.uk

A place for everything, and everything in it’s place! Requiring an open plan kitchen, dining and sitting area to include a bar and separate breakfast cabinet to be hidden from view - could be seen as an unreasonable request when approaching a kitchen company, but that’s just what this client asked for … and just what they got!

ilver Ash as well as Champagne Aluminium +Segmento door fronts and Quartz ‘Blanco Zeus’ polished counter-tops were used in the main kitchen space, creating a light and modern aesthetic. As with all Poggenpohl kitchens, the room is finished to an exacting standard. Here, a combination of toughened Bronze mirror glass and book-matched stone splashbacks in Calacatta Neolith were used. SubZero & Wolf appliances complete the design - offering a professional look and ensuring that any budding chefs have the facilities they need to create gastronomic masterpieces. The client, having already purchased the kitchen, opted to allow Poggenpohl to design their games room and bar area. Taking inspiration from a previous Poggenpohl project with a similar end use, the client requested a darker colour scheme and undercounter cooling appliances – and left the rest to us. The lighting is all operated via remote, for complete control over the brightness and colour warmth of the shelves as well as overhead. Poggenpohl also helped to specify the bar optics ensuring that everything works together.

Overall, the client had a strong vision of the appliance brands and functions they wanted, but then allowed much of the design work and colour specification to be created by the design team. As a result, they - and the team at Poggenpohl - are really pleased with the result. This kitchen also included +Stage cabinetry (pocket doors) to hide the breakfast area during gatherings, as well as the use of book-matching to the Neolith ceramic splashbacks. The warming drawers were required under the hob as the client often uses these throughout the cooking process. Many of the drawer accessories were custom designed for the clients’ specific utensils and spice jars – they planned every last detail with us, down to where the gravy jars would be stored - A place for everything, and everything in it’s place! Not shown in these images was the bespoke utility area, which featured laundry appliances, a large sink with spray rinse tap and even a bespoke drying cupboard! It was a pleasure to work for such lovely clients, and we all hope they enjoy their dream kitchen.
