A Will is not for life – find out when & why it should be reviewed

1. 1. You get married or enter a civil partnership. This automatically revokes any Will you made previously, unless it was made expressly in contemplation of marriage or civil partnership. 2. The birth of your child/children, and also when they reach the age of maturity. Minor children (under 18) are unable to inherit absolutely. Your Will must provide for any inheritance to be held in trust until they are at least 18. 3. Your relationship breaks down. From the date of divorce or dissolution of civil partnership, your Will is interpreted as if your former spouse/ partner had predeceased you. However, if you separate without a divorce or dissolution of civil partnership, there is no such reinterpretation of your Will, and your spouse/partner could still benefit under it. 4. You acquire new assets, or no longer own assets you had when you made your Will. This could be if you move house or receive an inheritance. 5. Change of employment if you become entitled to, or lose entitlement to, death in service benefit or other types of life insurance. 6. Births, marriages/civil partnerships, deaths and other events that affect the financial circumstances of your (potential) beneficiaries. For example, your Will might provide equally for your children. If one of your children has a child with a disability or has fallen on hard times you may want to leave them a greater share of your assets. Your Will may need amending to provide for this. 7. Change of inheritance tax laws. If your estate exceeds the inheritance tax free allowance of £325,000 (as at 2017), inheritance tax planning could be important when preparing

your Will. You may need advice from a solicitor on changes to the inheritance tax law and how revising your Will can mitigate inheritance tax. This is especially so if you relied on tax saving loopholes that have since been closed. 8. You have changed your mind as to the terms of your Will. In any event, it is sensible to review your Will every five years, and seek legal advice on whether it needs amending to reflect your current circumstances and wishes.

ugust is often filled with seaside summer holidays and for me mackerel is king of the holiday fish whether caught from feathered line on a chartered mackerel fishing trip, rod and reel or purchased from a seaside fresh fish shop, stall, or market this versatile fish is sustainable delicious and nutritious. I have fond memories of my home town Lyme Regis in Dorset setting off on warm summer mornings aboard a hand built mackerel fishing boat built by my late uncle and the sheer excitement of the first tugs on the line then winding in watching

the silvery blue fish skip aboard , bringing them proudly home to my mother, fish tied in braces with orange cord , we would prepare them together and usually served simply grilled or if I had a particularly good catch some would be soused for eating later. This simple dish will showcase the freshest mackerel and using the slightly unusual radish flavour of kohlrabi which is just coming through with a hint of spice from the cardamon, citrus from the lemon and vanilla. If mackerel is not your cup of tea then sardines work equally as well and even sea bass.

RECIPE: PAN FRIED MACKEREL FILLET WITH KHOLRABI REMOULADE, ORANGE, CARDAMOM & VANILLA REDUCTION Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 fresh mackerel filleted 1 small bulb kholrabi 3 egg yolks 1 tsp pommery mustard 3tbsp white wine vinegar 200ml ground nut oil 200ml olive oil Juice ½ lemon 1 tsp hot horseradish sauce 500ml fresh orange juice 1 split vanilla pod 5 crushed cardamom pod

Method 1. Blend egg yolks, mustard, lemon juice, horseradish and 1 tablespoon vinegar, slowly add olive oil while continuously whisking. 2. Fold in grated kholrabi, season to taste. 3. For dressing, reduce orange juice and remaining vinegar with the vanilla and cardamom until syrupy. 4. Do I need a contentious probate solicitor? Have you lost a loved one only to find that their last Will was not as expected? Has it been radically different from what they told you before? Is it different from earlier Wills they prepared under which you were a beneficiary? Do you think that someone has unduly influenced or exerted pressure on them to change their Will? If so, read on... What is contentious probate? You may have previously heard the term ‘contentious probate’ but are unsure as to what it encompasses and whether or not it is relevant to you. If you have recently lost a loved one and looking to dispute the individual’s Will and/or the administration of their estate, you will be a solicitor experienced in contentious probate. Contentious probate claims are where an individual contests the deceased’s Will and/or how their estate is administered. Typically, contentious probate claims are brought where the validity of the deceased’s Will and/or the provisions of the deceased’s Will are being challenged.

Typical claims under ‘contentious probate’ There are various types of claims that can come under this heading: (A) Challenging the validity of a Will: After your loved one has passed, you may find yourself in a situation where you are surprised as to the contents of their Will and believe that they do not truly reflect the deceased’s wishes. If this happens, you may look to challenge the validity of the Will on one or more of the following basis: • You believe the deceased did not have testamentary capacity at the time the Will was executed.

• You believe the deceased was unduly influenced or pressured into making a Will which do not reflect the deceased’s wishes. • An individual fraudulently entices the deceased to make a Will which would otherwise benefit a natural beneficiary. • The formalities required to execute a Will properly appear not to have been complied with. There are also additional grounds to challenge a Will which have not been listed above. If you suspect that your loved ones’ Will does not reflect their intentions and believe there is a cause for concern to challenge their Will, it is worth contacting a contentious probate solicitor to investigate your suspicions further. You should make note of the fact that although there is no time limit to bring a claim on the examples highlighted above, you should seek to investigate matters as soon as possible as it can be difficult to recover assets of the estate once distributed. (b) Challenging the provisions of the deceased’s Will: You may wish to challenge a Will on the basis that your loved one did not make sufficient provision for you or has left you out of the Will completely, even if this was true intentions of the deceased. This does not mean you can make a claim simply because you disagree with the contents of the Will and this type of claim can be made even where someone has died without making a Will at all. These types of claims are typically brought forward by family members, although under some circumstances nonfamily members may also be entitled to bring a claim. For example, a party who was in some way dependent on the deceased is likely to have a claim for provision to be made for them. Your contentious probate solicitor will be able to discuss what criteria the courts will consider in these types of cases and confirm whether you are legible to issue a claim on this basis. ne of the best ways to do this is by making a Will. Lucy Wood, wills, trust and probate partner, B P Collins advises on key things to consider when

making one. You have complete flexibility over who you choose to appoint as an executor. However, it should be someone who you trust and believe would do the job well, as distributing someone’s estate can be stressful. Executors do not need to be related to you, so you can consider appointing a legal professional if you have complicated financial or family circumstances. Talk to the people that you wish to appoint as executors before making your final decision, to ensure they are aware of the responsibilities involved and are happy to carry them out. For example, one of the key things they will have to do, is pay any outstanding debts and taxes out of your estate, which can be time consuming. It’s important to keep an up-to-date list of your assets - including bank accounts, trusts, properties, valuable items, pensions and insurance policies - to save your executors time when trying to locate them after you’re gone. It is also helpful to list any lifetime gifts and if you have excess income that covers those gifts, keeping a log will help your executors in claiming any relief for inheritance tax. It’s advisable to review your Will every five years, or in the event of any change in your personal or financial circumstances – for example, on marriage, divorce, having another child, on receiving an

You could also consider leaving it with your lawyer for complete peace of mind. A Will needs to be written, witnessed and signed correctly otherwise it will not be valid. If you’d like advice on making a Will, a wills, trust and probate solicitor can help. If you own a small foreign investment or bank account, it is wise to deal with this during your lifetime. If you die owning such a holding it can be disproportionately costly for your executors to cash in the foreign asset, and often the administrative costs are greater than the value of the asset itself. The beneficiaries then miss out on the asset altogether, sometimes forfeiting their interest in the asset due to the costs of claiming it.

Pyramid Pharmacy Relocates!

The beginning July marked the end of an era as Pyramid Pharmacy in London End closed its doors for the very last time. The much loved pharmacy has relocated and flung open its doors to a brand new, purpose built pharmacy at its new site. The well established pharmacy has relocated one of its branches to the new Medical Centre site on Walkwood Rise, Beaconsfield.

he exciting move comes as The Simpson Centre and Millbarn Medical Centre combine in one building to create The Beaconsfield Medical Centre, a state-ofthe-art medical centre that houses both GP practices that continue to run separately. The move is centred on serving the wider community, improving patient access and providing an invaluable service to the community the pharmacy has relocated to allow people to obtain medications quickly and easily.

This project has been years in the planning with Covid delaying the opening of the new site which was initially pushed back to January 2022 then July 2022. The new medical centre and pharmacy offer an easy service for patients to visit the doctor and get their prescriptions all at once. Existing patients of the pharmacy have been transferred over seamlessly and will continue to receive the high level of care they have always received. Head pharmacist at Pyramid Pharmacy, Ayesha

It is also designed to help cater for the forecast increase in the town’s population arising from the new housing developments in and around Beaconsfield. It is also easy to access via public transport links with local buses and pedestrian walkway. One resident of Walkwood Rise said ‘This was a tough process to live through as the Medical Centre has been built. Not all of us were happy when this was announced however since this has opened it has been so useful. My children have been struggling through the heatwave and with hay fever and it has been amazing having all of this on my doorstep. The pharmacy has been so useful and the staff here have been so friendly. I am definitely seeing the benefits’. The pharmacy will continue to offers a host of services including a delivery service for housebound patients, health advice, medication recycling as well as travel and flu vaccines. ith the chance to jet off overseas restriction free the summer holiday season is back in full swing. With recent soaring temperatures getting outside more often means a wonderful opportunity to top up our vitamin D. With more time outdoors, which can give your skin a sun-kissed glow, it is very important to not forget about sun protection. As summer heats up, I advise my patients about the vital need for sunscreen, along with wearing a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses. However, sunscreen is not only for the warmer months. Whilst a high SPF is important during the summer (at least factor 30, preferably 50), our skin does benefits from continuous UV protection all year-round. I find a good sunscreen to be one which is oil-free as high factor sunscreens can often feel heavy and greasy. Oil-free options tend to work well especially under makeup. I also prefer mineral sunscreens as they create a physical barrier which is better for the skin. With SPF as a staple of summer skincare, what else might we add to our skincare routine in the summer while staying nearer to home? During the summer months controlling oil and cleansing the skin is more important, but more often the issues come when people overdo it and make the problem of oily skin worse. the weather becomes warmer, we sweat a little more and naturally most of us think that more cleansing will help to combat this effect. What we do not want to do however is strip away the skin’s natural oils as the skin will simply compensate by producing even more. So, when it comes to cleansing just a little adjustment is needed. What is important is to build skin health that is consistent throughout the year rather than interrupting the skin’s natural processes. Moisturising is more complex for those who suffer with dry skin. Through winter the low humidity, warmer showers and drying effects of indoor central heating can take their toll. Those who switch in winter to a thicker moisturiser should dial back to something lighter for the summer months. And remember, moisturise before you apply SPF, making sure you reapply your SPF throughout the day, ideally every 2 hours especially if you are swimming for example. I often recommend adding in a vitamin C serum to your routine, as it not only works as an antioxidant but will also help to combat some of the pigmentation that many often develop from more intense sun exposure. A great choice when on holiday is a noncomedogenic tinted sunscreen as an alternative to your usual foundation, making it easier to reapply regularly. Do not forget also that while products can help your skin it is important to stay well hydrated and avoid being out in the sun during the middle of the day when UV rays are strongest. THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP According to the World Health Organisation, we are in the midst of a sleep loss epidemic, with two thirds of adults in the UK not getting the recommended 8 hours per night. Kate Kirrane from Seed Wellness tells us more.

esearch shows NHS spending on sleeping pills has trebled in the last 10 years. And a recent Consumer Reports survey of 1,767 adults revealed that nearly one-third of people who complained of sleep issues had used a sleep drug in the previous year. The impact on our health cannot be underestimated, with research linking insomnia with a higher risk of heart attack, cancer, obesity, depression and more. So, what solutions are available that don’t involve popping a pill? Emma Burwash, Seed’s Naturopath, said: “The issue with sleeping drugs is that they can lead to dependency and lose their effectiveness over time. I always recommend my clients explore more natural solutions.” Emma’s Top 3 Tips: 1. Find ways to unwind before sleep such as exercising or having a massage. 2. Remove electronic devices from the bedroom and do not use for at least one hour before bed. 3. HOT LIPS: Why pink pouts are trending and how to find your perfect summer shade Bold pink lipstick is back, says Katie Wright.

ith summer in full swing and lockdown restrictions lifting, lipstick has become the make-up must-have of the season. The stats show how strong our need for lippy is, with No7 Beauty Company reporting a 61% increase in sales in the second quarter of 2021, while there has been a massive 731% rise in searches for ‘lipstick’ on the Boots website compared to the same time last year. Inspired by the spring/summer catwalks, pink is the shade to be seen in right now, with beauty buffs taking their cues from the Tom Ford and Versace shows, where models looked fabulous with fuchsia pouts, both matte and glossy. “I absolutely love a bold lip and especially in the summer,” says celebrity make-up artist Bryony Blake. “We all have our go-to red lippy but what about pink? There are so many ways you can wear a bold pink lip.” Aimee Connolly, make-up artist and founder of Sculpted by Aimee, agrees: “The great thing about statement lips such as the pinks on the SS21 catwalk is how you can really change up the tones to find a shade that suits you or the look you’re wearing.” How can you find your perfect pink? “The key to wearing bright pink lipstick is to ensure that it doesn’t wear you,” says Cliff 1 86 06 A ST AUUGGUU S T2 0 22 01 2 2

Bashforth, managing director of Colour Me Beautiful. As a rule of thumb, he recommends matching the undertone of your skin, whether warm or cool, to your lipstick: “Cooler skin tones look amazing in cerise or hot pinks, indeed in most shades from dusty rose to bright fuchsia, whilst warmer skin tones will always look their best in coral or salmon pinks.” Not sure about your undertones? Generally, if you prefer gold jewellery you’ve got warm undertones, if you tend to wear silver, you’re cool. If you wear both, you may be neutral. “For medium and olive skin tones, typically their skins are quite neutral which allows them to carry off most shades,” says Connolly. “That being said, a dusty brown hinted pink is a perfect match for their colouring without too much drama. “For deep and dark skin tones, wearing a bold fuchsia colour is a gorgeous contrast to the skin which really makes the lips stand out. For a more subtle shade, opt for a warm toned pink or deep berry pink for that more natural look.” How should you apply bright pink lipstick? “I would apply my general tips for any statement lips to how best to wear a pink lip,” says Connolly. “For me, starting with lip liner is key as it not only

outlines the shape but it also keeps the bleeding and smudging to a minimum.” She advises using a liner that’s the same shade or slightly deeper, then filling in with your lipstick or gloss and neatening the edges: “As a final step, and one that is guaranteed to make your statement lip look clean and sharp, I like to correct around the edges with a flat brush and cream concealer.” Nervous about uber-bright neon or fuchsia? Blake says: “If you’re new to bright pink, you can try patting it on with your finger by starting on the middle part of your bottom lip and keep patting until the whole lip is subtlety filled in. This powdered velvet lip is very popular at the moment and a great way for you to try a bright colour out.” As for matte or gloss, the choice is yours, she adds: “Ultimately, for me it’s all about confidence. If you pop on a pink lipstick and it makes you feel fabulous and happy, then that’s the colour for you – wear it with pride!”

We sat down with two of our designers, Francesca and Damien, to find out a bit more about the world of interiors and how furniture impacts a space.

How does furniture affect a room? What pieces do you think are essential when it comes to designing a new dining room? Or what’s a must have for a bedroom space? You probably answered these questions with furniture; that’s because they’re essential when it comes to defining the purpose of a space and creating a feeling. This is a fundamental part of curating a product concept. Danetti Designer, Damien explains: “It’s all about the effect that the piece of furniture has on a space as well as the effect on the psyche of

a person like the colours, the textures, and the reflections etc. When you walk into a space that’s been carefully considered, you can really feel it. “It’s the emotional attachment that it creates and that’s what I love. When it comes to my designs, I’m inspired by how people use products. The functionality is fundamental, so I’m inspired by how a product makes people feel. I’m very inspired by the world around us; particularly by the Mediterranean, especially after having the opportunity to live and work out there. The landscapes, the culture and the history provide a wealth of inspiration. It’s the textures, tactility, and colours.” When it comes to material trends, our latest collection, ‘Timeless Textures’ is all about ‘feeling’, both through the way your space makes you feel to the tactile finishes and fabrics used. Whether you want to bring balance and grounding to your space with cool and calming colours or create a style statement with modern contrasting accents, these designs are all about connecting in comfort with those you love most.

Why is furniture functionality important? Furniture serves a purpose within a space and so the details and fixtures of a design should tie in with your need for the space. Thorndown Design Director Caroline Thornborough believes more of us are looking to the natural world around us as we come to style our homes as temperatures drop. She said: “The natural world has been very much in the forefront of people’s minds and consumer choices, which has had a huge impact on design. “For the autumn and winter months, warm, comforting but darker and more striking colours are set to be used with dark lush greens such as Field Green and Yew Green, comforting warm and wholesome dark blues like Bishop Blue, and

JAPANDI TREND

Sam Wylie-Harris talks to an interior design expert about how to work the Japandi trend in your home.

apandi décor style is one of the most popular interior trends right now – racking up no less than 56.5 million mentions across Instagram and TikTok, according to industrial-inspired home accessories and lighting brand, Industville. Not yet familiar? As the term suggests, Japandi is a mix of Japanese and Scandi style – a combination with endless appeal. “While geographically, Japan and Scandinavia may be worlds apart, when it comes to design, the two countries are synonymous with creating interiors rooted in simplicity, comfort, neutral colours and natural materials,” says Alysha Alli, who heads up the interior design team at Redrow homebuilders. “Together, the two cultures have led to the recent creation of the now universally loved interior trend, Japandi.” Illustrating a beautiful marriage of East meets West, where Scandinavian’s cosiness blends seamlessly with Japan’s minimalism, Alli says Japandi style is growing in popularity with homeowners of all ages throughout the UK.

“While the trend has been around since 2016, its popularity grew throughout the pandemic, and still has an enduring effect,” Alli explains. “Homeowners continue to create a functional yet welcoming interior that’s perfectly suited to a healthy balance of work and home life.” Scandinavian homes, she says, tend to prioritise comfortable interiors that are warm and inviting and deeply rooted in the countries’ concept of ‘hygge’ (cosiness), while Japanese design adopts the countries’ ‘wabi-sabi’ philosophy, which originates from Zen Buddhism. “The term refers to embracing imperfections and finding beauty in the natural, unpolished world,” notes Alli. “This fusion of two cultural beliefs has today created a design that’s loved for its welcoming and warm minimalist aesthetic.”

HOW CAN YOU GET THE JAPANDI LOOK? Neutral colour palette “Earthy tones and muted colours are key to recreating the Japandi look,” says Alli. “Sage and

muted greens, paired with watered-down greys, pale ochres, beiges and sandy tones should be top of your Japandi colour palette.” Scandi interiors can often favour clear whites, but Alli recommends replacing this with a light stone, beige or fawn tone, to avoid your interior feeling more Nordic than Japandi. “While Nordic design favours lighter colours, Japanese interiors can often appear more daring by introducing richer colours through design accessories. For a truly Japandi look, take note from Japan’s approach to colour by adding a contrasting colour to your neutral palette, such as pale pink or charcoal grey, either through soft furnishings such as cushion covers or throws, artwork or lighting,” she suggests. These small colour additions will add a richness to your interior that stops the room from feeling muted and restricted to similar colours, she explains. “A key thing to remember is that Japandi interiors should always blend harmoniously together, where every item is given equal attention,” says Alli. “So any contrasting colours should not stray too far from your neutral palette, but rather as a pop of colour.”

Sustainable furnishings “Both Japanese and Scandinavia interiors use wood as their dominate interior material – but do so in very different ways,” observes Alli. “Scandinavian-influenced interiors favour a rustic approach, where the wood is often left pale and untreated. Whereas in Japanese-inspired interiors, the wood is more likely to be stained and

darker, creating a much richer effect.” Don’t be afraid of opting for both, she says. Although the wood may be different, the natural colours remain in the same palette, so will still create that desired harmonious effect, while adding a little intrigue to the room that’s rich in an artisan feel. “Other authentic, natural materials, such as bamboo, rattan, cotton or hemp, offer an easy way to introduce texture and a natural element into your interior,” Alli adds. She says eco-friendly materials are perfect in the bedroom too, which should be rich in nature and free of tech for a good night’s sleep. “And perfect for introducing that unpolished look synonymous with ‘wabi-sabi’,” Alli notes. “Assorted warm metals also work beautifully with these natural materials and provide a contrast in texture.” Where both Scandi and Japanese interiors share a love of nature and house plants, as Alli points out, Japandi interior leans towards fewer but bigger plants, where the larger plant is used as a focal point in the room. “Other ways to bring the outdoors in can be through adding branches to large ceramics for a vase vignette, which offer a sustainable homemade accessory.”

Minimalist cosiness To ensure you strike the balance between Japan’s minimalism and Scandi’s cosiness, Alli says: “Adopting a minimalist approach by decluttering will allow your home’s architectural features and clean lines to shine. “Decluttering is an easy way to create the illusion of a minimalist interior – and can quickly transform forgotten or previously hidden elements, such as antique statement vases or ornaments, into focal pieces,” she adds. Use the lines of your shelves or bookcases themselves as a decoration, she suggests; don’t obscure them with trailing plants or soft furnishings. “The overall look should be one of continuity – blending shapes and sleek functionality – that remains rich in personality through your ornaments or books.” A UA GUUGSUTS T2 0220 22 2 9 25 6 5
