BECAUSE A FAMILY’S LOVE IS GOOD MEDICINE When someone you love is receiving medical care, being there shouldn’t depend on whether you can afford to stay nearby. Fisher House Foundation helps make sure service members, veterans, and their loved ones can be where they are needed most. Best known for our network of more than 100 Fisher Houses, these comfort homes are located at major military and VA medical centers across the United States and overseas. Families stay at no cost, with private bedrooms and bathrooms and shared kitchens, dining rooms, laundry facilities, and living spaces that provide the comforts of home during an often difficult and uncertain time. Our support extends beyond the walls of a Fisher House. Through Hero Miles, donated frequent flyer miles help provide airline tickets for families traveling to the bedside of an injured or ill service member or veteran. Hotels for Heroes uses donated hotel points to provide lodging when a Fisher House is unavailable.
MEET THE SASKA SISTERS When former Navy sailor Kayla Saska’s health suddenly took a turn for the worse, she called home with one simple plea: “I need someone here.” Her sister, Patricia, an Army veteran, rushed to Walter Reed to be by her side. When Patricia arrived, a room was already waiting for her at the Fisher House in Bethesda. “Fisher House was great,” Patricia said. “It’s like going to grandma’s house. They have everything you need.” With Patricia close by to advocate for her and Fisher House providing a safe place to stay, Kayla didn’t have to face one of the hardest chapters of her life alone.
