Keeping Families Close When It Matters Most

In 2025, Fisher House Foundation reached a remarkable milestone: 100 Fisher Houses supporting military and veteran families around the world. For more than three decades, these homes have provided a comforting place to stay so families can remain close to their loved ones during medical treatment.

Located near major military and VA medical centers, Fisher Houses offer no-cost lodging to families facing medical crises. Within these walls, families share early morning cups of coffee, quiet conversations in the hallway, and the comfort of being surrounded by others who understand what they are going through.

Since 1990, Fisher House has served more than 570,000 families, offering over 13.4 million nights of lodging and saving military and veteran families an estimated $690 million in lodging and travel costs. These numbers represent families who can focus on what matters most: supporting their loved ones on the road to recovery.

Inside every Fisher House, families find more than shelter. They find a warm hug after a difficult day, a quiet moment to gather strength, and a shoulder to lean on when the uncertainty feels overwhelming. In shared kitchens and living rooms, strangers become friends and a community of support takes shape.

Fisher House reflects our nation’s gratitude and respect for those who wear the uniform and the loved ones who stand beside them.

The Lane Family

J.P. Lane stayed at the Joint Base San Antonio Army Fisher House while recovering from catastrophic injuries sustained during an IED blast in Afghanistan.

An Army combat engineer, J.P. was severely wounded in 2011 when an improvised explosive device struck his vehicle, leaving him with dozens of injuries and the loss of both legs.

He spent months in surgery and rehabilitation as he began the long process of rebuilding his life. During his six-month stay at Fisher House, he found a place to reflect, recover, and focus on the difficult road ahead.

“The staff there was phenomenal,” J.P. said. “I was very grateful for the Fisher House because they became like family.”

J.P.'s wife and caregiver, Crystal, credits the Fisher House for their family's peace of mind as he recovered and learned to cope with his visible and invisible wounds.

Since 1990, Fisher Houses have saved more than 570,000 military and veteran families over $690 million.

HERO PROGRAMS

The Hero Miles program, which uses donated frequent flyer miles to purchase airline tickets, and Hotels for Heroes, which uses donated hotel points to secure rooms, have saved more than $131 million for military and veteran families since inception.

When ulcerative colitis changed Senior Airman Morgan Stoneking’s life, his mom, Amber Wolfe, was by his side through surgery and recovery. She managed medications, prepared special meals after his colon was removed, and even found moments to laugh with him along the way. Amber traveled from Missouri to Albuquerque twice, staying three weeks each time to care for her son.

“I told him, ‘I’ll find a way to get out there. If I have to drive there, whatever. I will be there,’” she said.

If she’d actually had to drive, it would have been 12 hours each way from St. Louis.

“Flying was absolutely phenomenal. Carlos, in Albuquerque, he would send me the vouchers in an email, and I would just walk in, go through security,” she continued.

While the Air Force flew Morgan for his surgeries, it was Fisher House Foundation’s Hero Miles program that made sure Amber could be there, too. Thanks to donated frequent flyer miles and support from the New Mexico VA Fisher House, long drives became manageable flights, keeping a mother and son together when it mattered most.

Through the Scholarships for Military Children and Heroes' Legacy scholarship programs, Fisher House Foundation has awarded over $3.5 million in scholarships in 2025, helping more than 1,760 students achieve their educational goals.

Anyia Woods stayed at the Portsmouth and Richmond Fisher Houses as a child when her mother, Diana, was a sailor receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. So she was excited to see the Fisher House logo again while applying for scholarships.

“A lot of the stories that my family tells me about Fisher House are about comfort,” Anyia said. “Like, Easter, how we had a little Easter egg hunt that was super fun and how nice the ladies were to me and how supportive they were.”

Anyia earned a Scholarship for Military Children for the 2025-2026 school year which she is using to pursue a degree in neuroscience at the University of Iowa. “I am honored to be the recipient of the scholarship for military children,” Anyia said.

“And not only because I was a part of the Fisher House when I was younger, but because they helped me and they helped my family through a very hard time and we’re all here and happy today and they helped us with our journey.”

The Saska Sisters

When a shipboard accident and medical complications ended Sailor Kayla Saska’s Navy career, she faced a long road of recovery. Her sister, Patricia Rowledge, rushed to be by her side during repeated hospital stays and became a fierce advocate for her care.

A lifelong athlete from Hereford, Arizona, Kayla later returned to competition through adaptive sports after medical retirement, competing in archery, field events, precision air, swimming, wheelchair basketball, and wheelchair rugby. She represented Team Navy at the Warrior Games in 2024 and 2025 and Team U.S. at the 2023 Invictus Games.

Patricia cheered her on at the Games through the Warrior Games Family Program.

“Sports gave me something to fight for again,” Kayla said. “It reminded me that I was still capable of doing hard things.”

Fisher House Foundation has sponsored all Invictus Games and Warrior Games family programs since they began, bringing families together to cheer on their loved ones as they show how far they have come.
