“But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort.” ~ 1 Corinthians 14:3 (NIV) ~

THE GREATEST USE OF A LIFE

William James (the Father ofAmerican Psychology) said, “The greatest use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast us.”

As I am writing this, my thoughts have been centered on two women who have played a great role in my life. Six days from today as I write this, I will officiate at my mother’s funeral service. And then just two days ago as I write this, Marty Leveron also went home to be with the Lord. They both will be missed greatly by many people, in whose company I consider it an honor to be included.

Very different women for sure, but with at least two important things in common. First, they both loved Jesus dearly, and they both loved people. Second, they have left behind many things that we know will outlast them. Long lives of trusting Jesus, living in each of them, will have an impact for generations to come.

Thinking about them and what their legacy will be, has caused me to consider what will outlast me some day? Hopefully the greatest use of my life that will outlast me will be something of eternal value as well.

However, as much as each of us (I’m counting myself here) who read this may be counting on that end result, none are guaranteed that the legacy we leave will continue to point others to Jesus.

The overwhelming majority of things we do during the day are profoundly temporary. Driving here or there. Having a meal. Watching TV. Even at work, what we do is more often about fixing yesterday’s problems than realizing tomorrow’s dreams.

So how do we bring a sense of the eternal into each day? How do we ensure we spend our lives building something that will outlast our time here on earth?

The only two things that last forever are the Word of God and people. If you want to build some -thing in your life that will last, look for ways to connect these two.

Look for ways to speak God’s Word into the lives of others. This involves more than quoting Bible verses though that is certainly part of it. It involves bringing the presence of God into every conversation.

That’s why theApostle Paul said, “But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort.” ~ 1 Corinthians 14:3 (NIV) ~

This kind of prophecy doesn’t require a microphone or a podium. In fact, it’s most effectively done one-on-one.

Try this today. In every conversation, ask yourself, “How can I help this person experience more of God’s strength? How can I encourage him or her to keep pressing on? What words can I use to help them feel the comfort of God’s Spirit?”

It may take only a sentence or two, but every time you do this, you’ll be building something that will last for all eternity.

Blessings on your week.As uncomfortable as it may seem, taking time to consider your eternal legacy is worth the effort. I do hope to see you all in worship this coming Sunday. We are coming back to IMMERSE for the next two months. This section is on PROPHETS. My sermon series will be based as usual on one passage from the coming week’s reading. We will begin in Hosea with my sermon: ACrash Course on Hope for that Feeling of Being Unloved.
