“No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” ~ Hebrews 12:11 (NIV) ~

GOOD TRAINING

Emanuel James Rohn was anAmerican entrepreneur, author, and motivational speaker.

Afew of his most famous quotes were:

“Don’t wish it were easier, wish you were better,”

“Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune,”

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”

However, today I want us to focus on another of his quotes. Jim Rohn said,

“We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. Discipline weighs ounces — regret weighs tons.”

Do you have any regrets? I guess we all do. Rohn’s quote resonates with many, because most of our regrets stem from lack of discipline: If only I had been more diligent. If only I had been more consistent. If only I had been more persistent. If only I had been more determined. And on and on.

with Pastor Terrell

Regret weighs tons, but it’s foolish to bear this burden longer than necessary. Do you want to know how to get out from under it? It’s in the first half of Rohn’s equation: Take another swing at the habit of discipline.

Ask yourself: What good thing what necessary thing must I start doing today and every day if I feel like it or not? Whether it’s a walk around the block or more time in the Word or cancelling a golf game to spend the afternoon with your kids, the short-lived pang of making a decision that doesn’t come easily is nothing compared to the relief it brings from the dread of regret. In fact, these tough decisions result in immeasurable joy.

Hebrews 12:11 refers to discipline. The writer is speaking here about the discipline (correction) that God sometimes works in us, but these words also apply to the discipline we have the power to exact on ourselves.

Lest you think I am preaching to you alone, I’m not. I’m preaching to all of us beginning with me! Let us not be fooled not one of us will ever outgrow the necessity for discipline in our lives be it spiritual, physical, intellectual, or moral. We tend to get lazy and/or overconfident in all of these areas. We all need to spend time in God’s gym of discipline. After all, He is the one who created us.And He is the one who knows where we are weak and in need of discipline.

So, here’s to good training.

Blessings on you this week. Take some time to carefully consider where you are feeling weak with regret, and make a plan and then begin exercising with that plan watching for the righteousness and peace and discovering the joy. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday. I will be continuing my new sermon series: Worship the King: Becoming Fully Devoted Disciples of the Risen Lord. This Sunday we will still be in Matthew 26 with my sermon: How toAttack Failure.
