“But Moses' hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.” ~ Exodus 17:12-13 (ESV) ~ It was a life-or-death battle. Joshua, the up-and-coming next leader of the Israelites went out to meet the army of the Amalekites in the valley of Rephidim. Moses and the Israelites needed to pass through this region on their way to the promised land — and the Amalekites didn’t want them to. So, Moses sent Joshua and a part of the army of Israel out to meet the Amalekites one morning.
What about Moses? Wasn’t he supposed to go out to battle as well? Turns out he did engage in the battle, just not in a “traditional army” kind of way. While the army went out to engage the enemy, Moses went up on the mountain overlooking the battlefield below. Why? It seems to intercede for the Israelites as they fought.

Intercession does not come without cost to the intercessor. Intercession is hard work! Here we see two men well up into their 80’s climbing up a mountain — I’m not sure of Hur’s age. Then Moses lifted his arms. I was a puppeteer for many years in High School and College — I have to tell you that keeping your arms raised — even for 30 minutes — is hard! And when Moses Continued on page 2
