Understanding PTSD I often remember the photo of a firefighter carrying a lifeless bloodied child, who was a victim of the Oklahoma City bombing. Recently, I read about the impact that incident had on Firefighter Chris Fields who retired with over 31 years of service to the Oklahoma City Fire Department. In the article, it said that Fields took counseling for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The good news was that despite this horrible day, Firefighter Fields “was finally in a good place.” However, this incident took time to understand and it definitely affected his personal life. I look back at the careers of other firefighters, especially those who worked side-by-side with their brothers and sisters who perished while answering the call of duty. How many of you have operated at serious calls that claimed the life of innocent victims? I am sure you can close your eyes and be haunted by the memory of a child, a mother, a father, or even a fellow responder who lost their life at a call at which you worked feverishly, as you tried to save them. How many of you have had close calls and found yourselves paralyzed from fear when you realized your life was spared for some mysterious reason? It has
happened to me, it has happened to family members in the service and it probably has happened to you. Whether you realize it or not, all in the fire service are exposed to events every day, which could psychologically affect you as months, or even years, pass after an incident. It is how you deal with PTSD that will make a difference on how the PTSD impacts you. Have you ever woken up at night and could not get back to sleep, because you were thinking of what you could have done differently at a call? According to an article in the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF), there are five warning signs for PTSD: isolation from others, disturbed sleep, increased irritability, decreased interest in significant activities, and self-destructive or reckless behavior are all signs that you may need to talk to a professional to determine if PTSD is a concern. It may be easy for a co-worker to realize your personality has changed. It takes strength for you to realize you may have a problem; sometimes a close friend can make you realize you need help. Understand that the military, only recently, started to understand the toll that war takes on
soldiers and that PTSD is real. Like soldiers, all of you are on the frontlines at home, protecting your communities. With this, comes exposure to traumatic events. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation has addressed PTSD. First responders need to know it is OK to have an emotional reaction to a traumatic event. There is no shame if you suffer from PTSD, but you do need help. Your department should have a plan in place so you can debrief after a serious call. Backdraft at Oxford Blaze

Oxford (MA) firefighters were called to the area of Old Worcester Road for a report of a structure fire on February 14, 2018. A passing utility crew saw smoke coming from the house and called the fire department. A backdraft had occurred blowing out glass and a kitchen wall, and firefighters had heavy fire showing on arrival. Fire had already traveled to the second floor and begun to gain headway. A second alarm was sounded. As the fire grew in intensity all companies were pulled from the house. Leicester set up their tower ladder and started to vent the roof. Crews eventually were able to go back in, gain control and extinguish the blaze. Cranston Firefighter Injured Battling Depot Avenue Fire
On March 19, 2018, Cranston firefighters responded to Depot Avenue for a house fire. On arrival, Engine 3 found smoke showing injured when he tripped on a hose line in the tight stairwell and fell from the second floor of an occupied 2-1/2 story house. Lines were down the rest of the stairs. He was taken to RIH by Cranston quickly stretched and operated. Companies opened up the area Rescue. 1 Injured in Pawtucket Fire
On March 18, 2018, Pawtucket (RI) firefighters responded to Warren Avenue for a house fire with people trapped. On arrival, a Code Red was transmitted for a fire in the basement of an occupied 2-1/2 story dwelling. Two lines were quickly stretched and knocked down the fire. Collapse in Billerica
Firefighters in Billerica (MA) were kept busy on March 17, 2018, at a working fire in a commercial garage on Farmers Lane. Companies found heavy smoke showing from a 1-1/2 story garage housing a glass company. Multiple lines were put in operation, but their interior attack was cut short when a partial ceiling collapse caused crews to transition to an exterior attack. With their ladder truck out of service, a special call was made for Chelmsford Ladder 1 to assist at the scene. The garage was attached by a breezeway to a large 2-1/2 story dwelling which, aside from smoke damage, remained unaffected by the fire. - Fire News photo by Kevin White
Naugatuck Fatal Mobile Home Fire On January 26, 2018, the Naugatuck (CT) Fire Department was dispatched for a fully involved mobile home on Idleview Road with possible occupants trapped. Police units reported heavy fire showing with two occupants out of the structure and one male unaccounted for. With the intense fire and smoke both police and fire members could not make entry to the rear portion of the mobile home. Companies began to fight the blaze with tank water as there were no hydrants in the area. Mutual aid for tankers was requested from Middlebury and Oxford, and an engine from Beacon Falls for coverage. Lisbon House Fire
Early on February 14, 2018, the Lisbon (CT) Fire Department, with automatic aid from Occum and Yantic FAST, was dispatched to Papermill Road for a house fire. Crews arrived to find a fully involved 1-1/2 story, wood frame, private dwelling. A tanker strike team from various departments was also requested. Meriden 2-Alarmer
On March 4, 2018, Meriden (CT) firefighters arrived to find heavy fire venting from the first floor of a large, 2-1/2 story wood frame on Wilcox Avenue. High winds quickly drove the fire throughout the dwelling and firefighters were removed. The fire took control of the attic area and burnt through the roof. Fatality at Worcester House Fire On March 5, 2018, Worcester (MA) firefighters battled a house fire on Green Farms Road. An off-duty fire lieutenant removed a resident under heavy smoke and heat conditions prior to the arrival of the onduty crews. First arriving companies made an aggressive interior attack and search. On March 3, 2018, the Marlborough (CT) Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire on Route 2 eastbound. The first-due engine found a well involved engine compartment pushing into the passenger compartment. The fire was being wind driven. Revere Five-Alarmer
On February 17, 2018, Revere (MA) firefighters were dispatched to a reported building fire at Sozio’s Furniture and Appliance on Squire Road. On arrival, firefighters found heavy fire showing from a large single-story commercial building. As the fire grew in size and took full control of the building, crews were forced into a defensive attack. Multiple additional alarms were requested, five in total, to get the manpower needed to handle the fire. At one point, a Mayday was transmitted by members of Engine 3 who had run low on air and become disoriented. An RIT was able to locate the members and safely remove them from the building. As additional companies arrived, the interior attack was abandoned in favor of an exterior attack due to the heavy volume of fire and the imminent
collapse of several portions of the structure. Multiple small explosions, believed to be from appliances inside the showroom, were heard, as well as from several vehicles parked alongside and in the rear to where the fire had extended. Multiple big lines, ladder pipes and deck guns poured copious amounts of water on the building for hours as the fire burned well into the night. As many as three firefighters sustained minor injuries from the fire. The showroom portion of the business was a total loss, but warehouse operations were largely unaffected. New Britain 2-Alarm
On February 9, 2018, New Britain (CT) firefighters responded to Arch Street shortly before 0500 to find heavy smoke from a vacant four-story, residential-over-commercial dwelling. Firefighters found heavy fire in the basement, which quickly extended throughout the 100-year-old building. Multiple lines were stretched, but companies could not get ahead of the fire. The interior operations were ceased in favor of an exterior attack. Two trucks and several multiversals were operated on the stubborn blaze. The fire burned for several hours before being brought under control. The entire building had recently been condemned, thereby evicting the occupants. A bodega and one additional business operated on the first floor. Waterbury Fight Goes Defensive
On February 22, 2018, the Waterbury (CT) Fire Department was dispatched to Orange Street for a house fire. Engine 7 arrived and reported heavy fire from a 2-1/2 story wood frame. Good Stop in Lawrence
On March 6, 2018, Lawrence (MA) firefighters were dispatched to a report by police of a fully involved building on Chandler Street. Engines 5, 6, and 7; Ladder 5; Rescue 1; and Deputy Wilson were sent on the initial alarm. When companies arrived, they found a large 1-1/2 story commercial auto shop well involved along with several cars and various other debris, including old tires. Firefighters ran multiple big lines and went right into a defensive operation. A second alarm was requested after having special called Ladder 4 to the fire, which also brought additional help from their own Engine 9 along with engines from Methuen and Andover. The fire did threaten a large multi-story commercial building on the C side but carefully placed lines and hard work prevented the fire from extending. Fire in the Fire House
An alert police officer reported flames coming from a second-floor window of the Whitney Avenue Fire Station in New Haven (CT) on March 23, 2018. Normally quartered in the two-story building, Squad 1 and Engine 8 were on another alarm when the fire was discovered. Companies responding encountered a fire condition on the A-B corner of the building and a heavy smoke condition throughout the entire second floor. Three lines were stretched as crews, under the command of Assistant Chief Mark Vendetto, made their way through acrid smoke to extinguish the one-alarm blaze. The station was quickly deemed to be uninhabitable by city building officials. Ashland Fire Displaces Dozens On February 9, 2018, Worcester (MA) firefighters responded to a three-alarm fire on West Street. Crews arrived to find fire in the basement of a large apartment building. After a short time, crews believed they knocked down the fire but it had extended through the walls and spread rapidly. The Ashland (MA) Fire Department was dispatched for a dishwasher fire on Joanne Drive on March 4, 2018. Companies arrived to find smoke showing from a three-story garden apartment. Crews made entry and found a large volume of fire in a secondfloor apartment extending to the third floor. Multiple lines were stretched and, with conditions rapidly deteriorating, a second alarm and then a third was struck as the fire was extended into the attic, moved its way down the building and vented through the roof. All members were ordered out. A deck gun and aerial master stream were employed, then crews re-entered and extinguished any remaining fire. Multiple surrounding towns responded to assist. Johnston Business Destroyed
On March 17, 2018, Johnston (RI) firefighters responded to River Avenue for a building fire. On arrival, Engine 1 reported a fully involved, single-story commercial building. Exterior operations were begun and, shortly afterwards, the entire building collapsed. One ladder pipe and several lines were stretched and operated. Busy Day for Hartford
On February 24, 2018, Hartford (CT) firefighters fought two fires within minutes of each other. The first fire was dispatched for a fire on Zion Street, with reported people trapped. Close Call in Leominster On February 4, 2018, Leominster (MA) Engines 4, 3 and 2; Ladder 1; and Rescues 1 and 2 responded. Deputy Chief Gary Ranno reported a three-story wood frame with heavy fire from the porches. A group recall and mutual aid was requested from Fitchburg. All occupants were out. Heavy fire along the B side of the building had the Engine 4 crew stretching a 2-1/2 inch line, Ladder 1, had a deck-gun on the side of the aerial, so a four-inch line was brought to feed the gun. With the fire still making headway, Chief of Department Robert Sideleau II struck a second alarm bringing in Sterling, Shirley and Lunenburg. With the fire taking over the cockloft, Chief Sideleau ordered an evacuation. As the tones went out, a Mayday was called by the lieutenant of Engine 2. The crew was on the top floor making their way out when the fire came down with intensity and, when the lieutenant turned, his nozzle man wasn’t behind him. He had become caught up in the line but was able to free himself and bailed out down the stairs. He was able to get outside where he was evaluated by Med-Star Medic’s. The firefighter was able to remain on scene. Shortly after firefighters were able to make their way back inside and the overhaul began. On March 9, 2018, Newtown (CT) Fire companies were dispatched to Great Quarter Road for a heavy smoke condition in the area. First arriving companies found a fire in a 1-1/2 story single-family home. Greenwich House Fire
On March 8, 2018, Greenwich (CT) firefighters responded to a report of a house fire on Sunshine Avenue in Greenwich. Crews arrived to smoke showing from the eaves. Firefighters quickly knocked down a fire in the attic and began to make a cut in the roof to check the voids. Sturbridge House Fire
On March 18, 2018, Sturbridge (MA) firefighters responded to a house fire on Shepard Road. The residents were not home at the time, however the family dog perished in the fire. Due to the lack of hydrants, multiple towns assisted in bringing water to the scene. Crews made an aggressive interior attack under heavy fire condition. Car Takes Out Pole in Haddam On March 13, 2018, Haddam (CT) Volunteer Fire Company responded to an MVA on Killingworth Road. In near white-out conditions, a driver heading southbound struck a utility pole. The pole snapped at the base and power was disrupted in the area. Bridgeport MVA While Bridgeport Fire companies were still on scene of a structure fire on East Main Street, Bridgeport Fire Department Engine 4 was dispatched to Park Avenue for a reported MVA. Engine 4 found one car off the road into a telephone pole with heavy front end damage, airbag deployment, and damage to the pole. 3 Injured in Mass Pike MVA On March 5, 2018, Charlton (MA) Fire responded to the Massachusetts Turnpike eastbound outside the rest area for a single-car MVA. State Police arrived first and found numerous patients, one of which, was pinned in the car. Charlton was already tied up on ambulance runs and mutual aid ambulances were called from Sturbridge, Southbridge and Auburn. Lifeflight was also requested to the scene. Command called for a heavy rescue out of Auburn. Crews from Charlton and Auburn went to work removing the car from the driver. 40 Displaced in Stamford Collapse
On March 2, 2018, Stamford (CT) 911 dispatch received over 1,200 emergency calls, a handfull of which were for a roof collapse on Myrtle Avenue. First arriving units found the front roof section of a four-story apartment building in the back of the neighboring pizza restaurant parking lot. Stamford firefighters made a quick search and found that no one was injured or trapped inside or outside of the building. Nor’easter Blows Tree Through Whitman Home
On March 2, 2018, during a destructive Nor’easter, the Whitman (MA) Fire Department responded to a reported tree into a house on Commercial Street. Engine 243 and Car 3 arrived to find a large pine tree into a 1-1/2 story wood framed occupied dwelling. Live wires were down in the street and the front side of the house was being torn away from the rest of the house. Building and electrical inspectors were immediately requested to the scene. Firefighters entered the home and escorted two occupants out; neither were injured. It was being determined whether or not the building could be saved. SCBA Re-Cert in Haddam On March 12, 2018, Haddam (CT) Volunteer Fire Company hosted a SCBA drill. Members with Interior Firefighter classifications must participate in a SCBA-proficiency drill four times a year. Haddam Ice Rescue Drill Members of Haddam (CT) Volunteer Fire Company participated in an ice rescue drill on February 19, 2018, at a local reservoir. During the drill, members took turns sliding a rapid transport sled across the ice to where a victim had fallen in. The rescuer helped pull the victim from the water and strapped his body to the transport sled. Using ropes, firefighters on shore pulled the sled, victim and the rescuer to shore. Reading Plays Bruins Alumni in Fundraiser
On February 10, 2018, the Reading Fire and Ice Hockey team hosted a charity hockey game at Burbank Ice Arena against the Boston Bruins Alumni hockey team. Proceeds from the sale of admission tickets were being donated to the victims of a six-alarm fire in Reading on Sanborn Street on June 1, 2017. Reading’s Nash Retires
On March 30, 2018, Captain Rick Nash will have worked his last shift as Captain at the North Reading Fire Department, where he proudly worked for 44 years. Captain Nash was also a call firefighter in neighboring Middleton for 50 years. During the last eight years of his storied career, he was able to work with and mentor his son, Brian Nash who is also a Firefighter/ Paramedic in North Reading. The members of NRFD held a retirement dinner for Captain Nash to
celebrate with dozens of coworkers, friends and dignitaries. He was presented with a citation of recognition signed by Governor Charlie Baker, a gold retirement badge presented by Chief Donald Stats and, from his son, a framed log book opened to his father’s first shift at 0800 on April 15, 1974. Captain Nash epitomized what it meant to be a true professional, a great fire officer, friend and family man.
