Are You Prepared? As a first responder, have you ever been involved with a mass casualty incident, a terrorist attack, or an active shooter event? Sadly, I can say that, indirectly, an active shooter changed the lives of so many people in a community I worked in for 33 years. One morning Father Larry Penzes, who was a priest in Lynbrook, New York, at Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church, lost his life while conducting morning mass. I worked a block away from the church at a local school. Swiftly the day changed at North Middle School, as we immediately went into a lockdown. This was something we had prepared for over the years. Our “go box” came out of the vault and our school prepared for a worstcase scenario as the shooter escaped and barricaded himself nearby. Other than the loss of Father Larry, the outcome was positive due to previous actions of an administration that took the time to train its staff yearly on what to do in this exact scenario. As a first responder, have you trained how to handle an MCI involving a terrorist attack or active shooter? Watching the horrible attack of a deranged shooter in Las Vegas, I realized how well the Las Vegas Police Department was prepared for this event. I saw responders
immediately donning protective vests and helmets and working together to stabilize a very “hot” situation. What could complicate the attack by a terrorist or active shooter? Yes, fire. Approximately 100 incendiary devices were found at the Columbine shooting and in 2008, fire caught our attention in Mumbai, India. On the home front, fire ended the Waco hostage situation, an ex-con set a car and a house ablaze in his lakeside neighborhood in Webster, N.Y. to lure firefighters, then opened fire on them, killing two, engaging in a shootout with police and committing suicide while several homes burned. Fire ended the Waco hostage situation and in Center Moriches (New York) an individual attempted to set fire to a church where he had holed up before committing suicide. Police throughout the country do an excellent job in protecting us and defusing hostage situations. The question is, are they prepared to fight fire should fire complicate their situation? Are we prepared to sit and watch a fire grow with innocent victims inside of the building? I thought about this after the hostage situation in my area. All of us know the flames we see in the movies do not depict real-life sit-
uations. Police officers should be familiar with the four stages of fire growth. They need to know that if they arrive to a situation where fire is present, how much time they have to execute a safe entry to save a life before conditions can instantly change and compromise their own safety. With active shooters and terrorist situations occurring more frequently, all responders must regularly train together so that everyone goes home safely. Pray for the 59 killed in Las Vegas and pray that none of the 527-wounded pass away. Although this was a horrible tragedy, I feel the Las Vegas responders did an outstanding job handling it. My question to you is; are you prepared for a similar situation? ... Dennis

Explosion Rocks Glenville
In September, a large explosion rocked the morning air in the town of Glenville in Schenectady County when a fuel storage tank at Mohawk Asphalt on Freemans Bridge Road exploded without warning. Smoke could be seen for miles and a nearby hotel was evacuated in fear of more explosions from nearby tanks. An airport
crash truck from Stratton Air National Guard Base was brought in to control the blaze. Within minutes of its arrival, gallons of foam were poured on the tank, darkening the flames and cooling the already heated neighboring tanks. No injuries were reported. -Fire News photos by Peter Barber

Multiple-Dwelling Blaze in Brooklyn

Washingtonville 3-Alarmer
Recently, the Washingtonville Fire Department received a call for smoke coming from a building on East Main Street in Washingtonville. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke emanating from the rear of the building. Firefighters forced entry, conducted searches and extinguished the fire. The age of the building and the many renovations to it over the years contributed to fire extending to the apartments above and to the apartments in the rear. The fire was contained to the building of origin. Seven occu-
pants were displaced by the fire and were being assisted by the Red Cross. The fire was under investigation by the Orange County Fire & Emergency Service, Fire Investigation Division. The following departments also operated at the three-alarm fire: Salisbury Mills, South Blooming Grove, Monroe, Vails Gate, Chester, Maybrook, Campbell Hall, Coldenham, Woodbury, Montgomery, City of Newburgh and Cornwall. 3 Dead, Dozens Injured in 2-Bus Crash
Three people were killed and at least 15 others injured in a violent crash between and MTA bus and a charter bus on Northern Boulevard in the Flushing section of Queens on September 18, 2017. The charter bus plowed into the city bus as it was making a slow turn onto Northern Boulevard from Main Street. The impact of the crash spun the MTA bus completely around and sent the charter
bus careening into a fast food store. The driver of the charter bus, a passenger on the city bus, and one pedestrian were later identified as the three victims. 2 FF, 5 Civs Injured in Early Morning Blaze
Cronomer Valley 3-Alarmer
At least seven people were injured seriously, in an early morning house fire in South Jamaica, Queens, on September 8, 2017. FDNY units were called to the 147th Street address around 0330 and found flames engulfing the first floor of the two-story home. Arriving companies encountered heavy fire conditions in a firstfloor store filled with fabric products. Firehouse Kitchen Spencer’s Chili By Ray Cooney I know I’ve written a few articles about chili, but I promise, this one is a little different. Firehouse Kitchen was asked by Hormel Chili to judge the “America’s Best Firehouse Chili” contest. My job was to pick the top 10 recipes, which would then be judged by a group of people looking for the top three choices. I thought, “No problem. I’ve judged chili contests before” But this was different. The difference was that at all the chili contest I have judged before, I was able to taste the chili. At this one, I had to judge just by reading the recipe. When Hormel Chili began their Facebook campaign, I posted it on my Facebook account as well. We received hundreds and hundreds of submissions. During the month that you could submit your recipe, I was up every night until 2 a.m. trying to figure out which Chili was the best. After I found my top 10, Hormel Chili designed a campaign to pick the top three. There was a lot riding on this contest. The first-place prize was a check for $10,000 for the fire department that the chili was from and Hormel Chili donated an additional $20,000 to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. The finals were held at the New York City Fireman’s Museum in Manhattan. I couldn’t think of a better place. When I arrived at the museum, it didn’t smell like a museum — it smelled like chili. The three finalists were busy preparing their recipes. I was stunned to learn that a New York City firefighter didn’t make the top three! The top three were from Florida, Pennsylvania and Louisiana. We had Firefighter Craig Winebaum, from greater Naples, Florida; Firefighter Andrew Drescher, from Union Deposit, Pennsylvania (near Hershey Park) and Firefighter Jeremy Chauvin, from Saint John’s Parish in Louisiana. The judges, at the finals were myself, the head of the Hormel Chili brand and the head of The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, the great Ron Siarnicki (who does so much for firefighters).
Before I announce the winner, I just wanted to say thanks again to all the firefighters who sent in recipes and gave their support to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. AND THE WINNER WAS: Louisiana Firefighter Jeremy Chauvin and his “Spencer's Chili.” It had a mild, sweet, delicious taste. I asked Jeremy where the name came from, and he told me the story about one of his firefighter brothers, named Spencer, who was killed last year while responding to a car accident. Jeremy gave me a bracelet that said “Spencer’s Way.” It is still on my wrist. Special thanks to Hormel Chili for making this contest happen and of course all the helpers and volunteers that were there. Get ready, America! Season Seven of Firehouse Kitchen just started. Tunnel to Towers in Albany
Held in Albany, this annual Stephen Siller Tunnel to Tower Foundation run was held at the Corning Tower in Empire Plaza on September 17, 2017. Siller was a 34-year old New York City Firefighter with Rescue 1 in Brooklyn who lost his life on 911. Stephen was the father of five children. According to George Siller,
Stephen’s older brother, the money raised all over the country from the Tunnel to Tower runs go to build homes for military who have received catastrophic injuries. The foundation has built, or is in the process of building, 66 homes, costing upwards of $400,000. - Fire News photos by Tom Heffernan

Busy Day in Carmel
Car Burns on Route 84
Recently, Carmel Fire and Ambulance Corps, with Mahopac Fire and EMS, along with Mahopac Falls Fire and EMS on dual dispatch, were called to an MVA on Route 6 in the area of Shaft 10. Before units could clear the scene, another call for a two-car MVA with injuries was dispatched to Mahopac, Mahopac Falls and Somers to respond with fire and EMS units. Mahopac Falls was first to arrive and firefighters took over traffic control from Somers and Carmel police so they could investigate. Somers arrived with an EMS unit and Fire Police. Mahopac Fire arrived with a chief and Heavy Rescue, followed by a EMS unit from Mahopac Falls. On September 20, 2017, during rush hour, the Winona Lake Engine Company was called out to a car fire on Route 84 eastbound at exit 10. Crews were greeted by a fully involved vehicle. MULTI AGENCY ACADEMIC COOPERATIVE (MAAC) FOUNDATION Hosts a Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening Ceremony of Northwest Indiana’s First Emergency Services Training Academy
The Multi Agency Academic Cooperative (MAAC) Foundation hosted an official ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony on Saturday, September 16, 2017, at the site of the new Emergency Services Training Academy located at 4203 Montdale Park Drive in Valparaiso, Indiana. The MAAC Emergency Services Training Campus has been designed to support thousands of fire, law enforcement and EMS personnel throughout Lake, Porter, La Porte, Jasper and Newton Counties. The MAAC campus includes a 40-foot search and rescue tower, two-story live burn building, flashover unit, two-story residential training structure, ventilation and forcible entry training structure, rescue technique drafting pond, vehicle extrication pad, ventilation and forcible entry structure, fire extinguisher and propane teaching areas, indoor training space and classrooms.
“We have developed a state-of-the-art campus that will serve as a leading provider of safety, emergency preparedness, and response training throughout our region. The MAAC is an incredible asset for northwest Indiana’s deserving public safety community,” Celina Weatherwax, President, McMillan Family Foundation said. During the ceremony, Stewart G. Clifton Park Blaze
The Clifton Park Fire Department was called to a structure fire at a doggie day care on Route 9. The building, which was recently purchased, was under renovation and scheduled to open in a few weeks. Smoke was reported coming from the back of the building by a passerby. Units arrived to flames through the roof. Halfmoon,
Hillcrest, Vischers Ferry, Jonesville and Boght were called to the scene, with additional departments standing by to cover. Luckily there were no animals in the building at the time of the fire and no firefighters were injured. Smoke in Amsterdam
Recently, Amsterdam Fire received a report of a possible structure fire on Guy Park Avenue. Engine 2, Truck 1 and Rescue 1 responded. Upon arrival, office workers were evacuated, and units found an office filling with smoke with no flames visible. Churchville volunteer firefighter Justin Montagno was only sevenyears old when the WTC towers came crashing down and 343 firefighters were died. He joined the department when he was 18, following in the footseps of his dad, who was a volunteer with another company. Justin has never forgotten and doesn’t want anyone else to forget. In September he ran in Rochester’s half marathon. The Rochester marathon is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon in which he one day hopes to compete. What makes Justin’s accomplishment so impressive is that he did it in full turnout gear, including SCBA and all the essential in his pockets. The only thing he changed out was his boots for running sneakers. This was his third year competing in the race in gear and he gets a lot of support from his fire department and chiefs. He does not really advertise to anyone that he is running in turnout gear that weighs an extra 75 pounds and is also a thermal barrier. He just hopes people notice and remember. Greene County FA Parade
On September 9, 2017, the Greene County Firemen’s Association Convention Parade brought more than 40 departments together to celebrate its 129th year. The Red Knights from Rensselaer County and East Greenbush brought their ladder truck and also took the scenic mountain ride and came home with two trophies. MacBoston: Training Never Stops
On September 23, 2017, nearly 100 firefighters from various states arrived at Saratoga County Fire Training Center for an intensive all-day training seminar with MacBoston 18 Truck. This year’s East Coast Fire Training seminar brought together superb instructors from the FDNY, Baltimore, Delaware and Albany. The eighthour intensive hands-on training stations included ladder ops, forcible entry, search and rescue, engine ops and lock removal and entry. Each firefighter participated in each of the six stations — including climbing a vertical 32-foot ladder — throughout the day, concluding with a meet-and-greet dinner with the instructors. Mahopac Falls Open House
The Mahopac Falls Open House was held at their headquarters. New purchases of turnout gear, a new truck and Dive Team equipment were out for all to see. Joining the firefighters, Sheriff Don Smith brought down Deputy Dalo and new K-9 Lex, the Lake Patrol unit, the Putnam County Emergency Response Team vehicle and two deputies that helped parents with the woes of installing car seats. Lunch was put out for those who came to visit between the many ‘circuits’ of firefighter and EMS life. 1 DOA in Scarsdale 3-Car
On August 20, 2017, Scarsdale crews responded to a three-vehicle head-on MVA with report of multiple pins north of Weaver Street. Two SUVs hit head-on and made a side impact on a sedan. The driver of one SUV was confirmed DOA by Scarsdale medics. A passenger was extracted from the SUV with the DOA, and one from the other SUV. Mahopac Falls MVA
Several Injured in Rosedale MVA
Mahopac Falls Fire, Rescue, EMS and Fire Police responded along with multiple units from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and EMStar paramedics to the corner of Secor Road and Agor Lane for a two-car accident with multiple injured. Chief Brian Sacher was the Incident Commander and put Fire Police units along Secor Road from Longdale to Archer Roads. At least six people were injured, two seriously, when an out of control van left the roadway along Brookville Boulevard near 143rd Avenue in Rosedale, Queens, on the evening of July 29, 2017. The van struck some pedestrians, some others vehicles, and then drove through the crowded Brookville Park before landing in a shallow pond.
