From the Editor’s Desk Dennis Whittam, Editor

Are We Forgetting? Recently, I asked one of my friends what he remembered about Pearl Harbor. He looked at me like I was nuts! Two other members thought for a minute and figured out that I was gathering information for my September editorial. As for Pearl Harbor, we all agreed that if it wasn't for movies, documentaries and conversations with our fathers and mothers, we would know little about the first-hand experience of WW II. I grew up during the era of the Vietnam War. I can tell you about the protests that happened in 1969 and I can tell you about the saddened feeling my family felt when our neighbor was informed her son was killed in battle. But, I cannot tell you anything about the first-hand experiences about the war because I was too young at the time. I am reflecting about our important history of the past because I woke up last night realizing that another anniversary of September 11 is not far away. Reflecting on 9/11, I can remember where I was and what I was doing. I was teaching a group of eighth grade students. Many of my students had parents who worked in the financial district of Manhattan and quite a few had fathers who were members of the FDNY. All of the teachers in my school went into an emergency

mode to keep our students calm. Yes, there were tears, questions with no answers and serious apprehension of what would be in store for us as the day progressed. I made it through the day and rushed home to my firehouse. When I walked into my station, the silence in the TV room was unnerving. My company was organized into crews, ready to deploy into Manhattan if needed. Our ladder crew was activated to stage in Queens. The next day our rescue truck responded to the Financial District to provide lighting for the residents of Manhattan. I am telling you this for a reason and it is really not about what the Terryville Fire Department did during the attack on the World Trade Center. The other day, I watched a bunch of young energetic responders return from a call. I looked at their faces and saw smiles and heard the members kidding with one another about a plethora of topics. Only a first responder knows the complicated feelings we experience after a call. Talking, kidding around and sitting down for a few minutes with the crew is what helps us bring closure to the call. Looking at the crew, most of them were infants when the World Trade Center was attacked. They have no memories

of that fateful day. What they know about the attack on our country is what they have heard from parents, learned in school, or watched on television. As responders, do they really know what occurred? As time marches on, the first-hand experiences of the past become distant memories. In some cases, this may be a good thing. However, as we continue to lose responders that operated at the World Trade Center, we must insure everyone never forgets. On September 11, 2018, take the time to share stories, comfort a friend who lost loved ones and sit with those who have been taken ill with cancer from 9/11. Remember, we never forget our own! ……Dennis

Firefighters Experience Smoke Explosion at Allamuchy Structure Fire

On June 1, 2018, Allamuchy firefighters were alerted for a reported structure fire on Oakcrest Drive. Chief Rick Lomonaco was first to arrive to a deck fire with extension to the structure. The crew of Engine 91-61 quickly stretched a line to the front door to attack the blaze that worked its way into the living room. Hackettstown Fire arrived immediately behind 91-61 and began to

extinguish the rear of the structure. Interior crews worked their way up to the second floor to find a light smoke condition with no visible fire. As members began searching for the attic stairs, a smoke explosion occurred in the attic, blowing out the B-side of the house and dropping ceiling debris on two firefighters. The fire took over the attic of the structure and evac-

uation tones were sounded. Firefighters from several companies assisted in establishing a heavy water flow into the house. Rough Day All Around On the morning of July 15, 2018, the North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue was dispatched to a fire on 25th Street in Union City. The fire was well advanced on arrival and eventually worked its way up to six alarms and five children passed away due to injuries received in the fire. This assignment required mutual aid from as far as southern Essex County. As cover units were arriving members from NHRFR redirected the cover units to Hillside Place for a reported fire. This resulted in an extremely rare sight of units from Bloomfield, Nutley, Montclair, Secaucus, Bayonne, Kearny, Harrison and Jersey City navigating the hills of North Bergen to arrive at a large three-story frame with a moderate smoke condition throughout the structure. A large number of overhead lines obstructed using aerials so crews went to the roof by ground ladders as Bloomfield, Harrison and Bayonne made the basement and located the seat of the fire. Crews were able to open up the wall and stop the fire from spreading past division 1 as it was working its way up the walls. As the mutual aid was wrapping up from this fire a third reported fire came in on 89th Street and crews responded directly there, some making it to all three scenes. The latter call was a non-event. - Fire News photo by Mark Rosetti

Cologne Chief Shawn Vallauri established command for a fire in the rear of the truck’s tractor and impinging on the front of the trailer. Mays Landing responded with Water Tender 1819, which stretched a line. The fire was now involving the trailer’s refrigeration unit and threatening its cargo of clams. Once the fire was extinguished, command had the trailer and its cargo checked and found no signs of the fire extending into the trailer. Also on location was Township of Hamilton Police and EMS. - Fire News photo by Ken Badger

Passaic 6-Alarmer Just after 2200 on July 16, 2018, Passaic firefighters responded to the reports of a fire on Lexington Avenue. They arrived on scene to find a kitchen fire in the El Chevere Restaurant. The fire quickly extended throughout the store and into the cockloft. Once in the cockloft the fire ran through six businesses in the attached single-story commercial strip mall. Humidity was a big factor in fighting the fire, not only taking a toll on the firefighters, but also causing the smoke to bank down low to the ground resulting in zero visibility at times and fire officials requesting the public be moved as far as a block-and-a-half away. The main body of fire was finally knocked down but hot spots continued to pop up throughout the morning hours as parts of the buildings began to collapse. Fire and water damage affected 11 businesses with three a total loss. Three firefighters were treated for injuries and released. Fire departments from around Bergen and Passaic counties battled the blaze. - Fire News photos by PuckStopperPhotography.com, Mark Rosetti and Peter Danzo

Town 4 Troop Iron Chef Competition By Ray Cooney On Sunday, July 22, 2018, I attended one of the most exciting events I have been to. It was “America’s First Responder Iron Chef” competition and took place in Mountainville, New York — a small town at the foot of the Catskill Mountains. The Blackrock Fish and Game Club were the hosts. This competition allowed first responders from all different areas to participate. From volunteer first responders to paid first responders, as well as military personnel, all were welcome. The rules of this Iron Chef competition were as follows: on a table were 20 different ingredients. Each team would have to pick two items from the 20 to use in their main dish. The order for which team would pick first was decided by the appetizer each team created. The public in attendance would vote on the appetizers and the team with the most votes would pick their two ingredients first and the second-place team would pick their two ingredients out of what was left, etc. As you can imagine, the last team that was left to pick had slim pickings. Each team had to use bison meat plus their two chosen ingredients for their recipe. They could add other ingredients, but those three items were a must. Woodbury (Long Island, NY) EMS won the appetizer competition, thereby giving them the first pick at the ingredients. They chose white wine and a half-pound of prosciutto. Now you would think this team would wind up being the overall winner by having the best choice of ingredients, but sadly this was not true for them. The team that placed fourth, in the appetizer competition, took home the title of Iron Chef Champion. They were the Sons of the Legion Post 488 of Monroe, New York, led by John Budrow. It was his is version of bison and bacon ravioli

with shiitake mushrooms and white wine sauce. It was accompanied with an arugula salad with a sweet caramel dressing. The ingredients they picked from the list of 20 were tomato sauce and breadcrumbs. John informed me that he used these two ingredients in the mix of the meat that went into the raviolis. With only an hour to prepare the meal, John shared one of his little cooking secrets. He didn’t use homemade ravioli shell. Instead, he used wonton shells from a local Chinese restaurant! Upon the initial presentation of the finished meal, I made a joke that it looked like someone got sick on the plate (based upon the submersion of the ravioli in the white wine/mushroom sauce). John pushed me to taste it. It was outrageous. I knew immediately that this would be the winner. Next year, if you are not doing anything when the event rolls around, I suggest you try and make every effort to attend. E-mail Town4troops.com for information. Special thanks to all the teams that competed. A special thank you to Sean Lowe, of the Harriman Fire Department, for inviting me to this event. One more thing, if you are wondering, that is the famed 343 Chopper from television’s Orange County Choppers. They were there and would not let me ride the chopper home!
