Saturday 5 September, 2:30pm, Saturday Matinee: Orchestral Grandeur (programmed by Paul Cooke)

This week’s musician of choice is Jordi Savall, a Spanish conductor and viol player, and largely responsible for popularising instruments of that family, particularly the viola da gamba. The program concludes with the elegant symphony by the Spanish Classical composer Arriaga who, before dying at the age of 19, had also penned three string quartets, two sacred works, two operas and two overtures.

Wilhelm Furtwängler has been praised as “one of the great masters of the art of conducting”, but he also composed chamber music, a piano concerto and three symphonies. This program features his Symphony no 2, of which French composer Arthur Honegger wrote: “The man who can write a score as rich as [this] is not to be argued about. He is of the race of great musicians.”

Saturday 19 September, 2:30pm, Saturday Matinee: At the Ballet (programmed by Susanne von Richter) The major work is Daniel-François-Esprit's Marco Spada, concerning an 18th century bandit disguising himself as an aristocrat. First performed in 1857, the ballet was forgotten for well over a century before French choreographer Pierre Lacotte revived it in 1981 with Rudolf Nureyev. The program also includes ballet music by Boismortier, Satie and Chaminade.

Saturday 19 September, 8:00pm, The Life of a Composer (programmed by David Brett) This program allows us the opportunity to hear some of Percy Grainger’s more substantial works, from Hill song no 1 through to Lincolnshire posy. Of particular interest is his major work, The warriors, “scored for a large orchestra (with six horns and bass oboe), three pianos, tuned percussion (including wooden and steel marimbas, tubular and staff bells), an off-stage brass section, and — if necessary — three conductors”.

Inconsolable as she is, it is some time before she is able to acknowledge the advances of the god Bacchus. At last the two are united and Venus, the goddess of love, can crown Ariadne. Another famous pair of lovers also finds happiness on Naxos: Thetis and Peleus, later to be the parents of Achilles. Of course, it is not love at first sight. The two grapple with many a misunderstanding before they come together. Eventually Venus, the goddess of love, is successful here too.

The grieving Orfeo resolves to go to Hades to find his deceased wife, Euridice. Imeneo, the god of marriage, appears and announces that the gods, moved by Orfeo’s grief, have decided to allow him to bring Euridice back on condition that he does not look at her until they have returned. At the entrance to Hades, the Furies bar Orfeo’s way but he calms them by playing his lyre and singing an eloquent song of his grief. They relent and allow Orfeo to pass into the Underworld. In the Elysian Fields, the Blessed Spirits dance and the Shades bring in his veiled wife. On the journey to the upper world, Euridice becomes agitated because Orfeo will not look at her and fears that he no longer loves her. Unable to resist her anguished pleas, Orfeo turns and as he embraces her, she dies once more. Overcome with grief, Orfeo plans to take his own life. Sylva Varescu, a successful cabaret singer from Budapest, is in love with Prince Edwin, who has promised to marry her. His disapproving parents arrange his marriage to Countess Stasi who does not love him. Sylva leaves on an American tour. On her return, Sylva visits Edwin’s palace in Vienna and Edwin’s father informs her that, if she marries Edwin without first having achieved noble rank through some other route, her role in society could be merely that of a Gypsy Princess. As her entrée into society, Sylva pretends to have married Edwin’s friend, the nobleman Boni who falls in love with Edwin’s fiancée Stasi. Edwin tells Sylva that his parents will accept her if she pretends to have divorced Boni as she has already entered society through the marriage. Sylva realizes that she is better than they, snubs Edwin and his father and leaves. Feri, also a nobleman, is about to accompany Sylva and the cabaret troupe on another American tour when, in a Viennese hotel, he recognizes Edwin’s mother as a retired cabaret singer from Budapest. Edwin’s mother 14

joins Sylva and Edwin with Boni and Stasi as they leave for America, all unwittingly heading to safety as World War I is about to begin.

Cracow in 1704 is under Saxon occupation. Its governor, Ollendorf, has fallen out with Countess Palmatica after being rejected by her daughter, Laura. He plots revenge, releasing two prisoners– Simon, the “beggar student” and Jan, a political activist, to woo Laura and her sister. He equips them with money and finery, to impersonate an aristocrat and his secretary. Laura falls for Simon, who reciprocates her feelings. After various complications and intrigue, Jan’s plans are successful and Poland is liberated. Opera Australia OPOZ56013CD 2:20 The old Count di Luna had two sons but when one died he burned a gypsy woman at the stake for bewitching him. The young Count di Luna, in love with Leonora, is jealous of her love for the troubadour, Manrico. Azucena, daughter of the gypsy, tells her son, Manrico, that she had seized the Count’s son in revenge but, in a trauma, she threw her own son into the fire and so raised the Count’s son as her own. The Count attacks Manrico, who escapes. Leonora, believing him to be dead, decides to become a nun but Manrico snatches her from the altar. In revenge, the Count condemns Azucena to be burned. Manrico rushes to help her but is captured and sentenced to die with his mother. Leonora buys his freedom by offering herself to the Count but poisons herself before Manrico is freed. As Manrico is executed, Azucena’s revenge is to reveal that the Count has killed his own brother.
