Siegfried leaves Brünnhilde to find adventure, giving her the ring of the Nibelungs as a pledge of his faithfulness. At Gibichung Hall, Hagen urges Gunther and Gutrune to marry Gunther to Brünnhilde and Gutrune to the hero Siegfried. When Siegfried arrives from the Rhine he is given a magic drink which makes him forget Brünnhilde and fall in love with Gutrune. Gunther and Siegfried swear blood-brotherhood and set off to win Brünnhilde while Hagen broods on winning the ring. Brünnhilde is visited by her sister valkyrie, Waltraute, who begs her to return the ring to the Rhinemaidens and free the world from Alberich’s curse, but Brünnhilde refuses to surrender Siegfried’s gift. Disguised as Gunther, Siegfried breaks through the fire, drags the ring from Brünnhilde’s finger and claims her as Gunther’s bride. As he prepares for them to rest for the night he draws the magical sword Nothung, putting it between them, and calling on it to bear witness to his loyalty to Gunther…to be continued.

Tom Jones, a foundling brought up by Allworthy, and Sophia Western are in love. Squire Western wishes her to marry Blifil, Allworthy’s nephew and heir. Sophia rejects Blifil’s proposal. Tom knocks Blifil down in a fight. Efforts are made to blacken Tom’s character. Western angrily rejects Tom’s request for Sophia’s hand.
Sophia, accompanied by her maid, runs away. Blifil and Squire Western, in pursuit of Sophia, arrive at an inn where they meet Benjamin Partridge who knows about Tom’s birth. Sophia and her maid arrive but they and their pursuers remain unaware of each other’s presence. Next to arrive is Tom, with Sophia’s cousin, Lady Bellaston, whom he has rescued from highwaymen. She is very grateful to her rescuer leading Sophia to think that Tom is unfaithful. She leaves with Tom in pursuit. Eventually Tom finds Sophia living with Lady Bellaston in London. Sophia now realises that she was mistaken in doubting his fidelity. Partridge has told Squire Western the secret of Tom’s birth: he is Allworthy’s elder nephew and therefore his heir. Western now gladly consents to Tom and Sophia’s marriage.

Vienna State Opera Ch & O/Georg Solti. At night Alberich calls on Hagen, his son, to kill Siegfried and obtain the ring. Gunther brings Brünnhilde to the Gibichung Hall. She is aghast that Siegfried does not recognise her and wears the ring she thought Gunther had taken from her. She calls him husband, which Siegfried denies. Hagen offers to avenge Brünnhilde’s wrongs. The men go hunting and Hagen gives Siegfried a drink which cancels the forgetfulness potion. Siegfried tells of his love for Brünnhilde and Hagen spears him in the back to avenge Gunther. Hagen and Gunther quarrel over the ring and Hagen kills Gunther. Brünnhilde now understands all that has happened and the evil power of the ring.
She orders a funeral pyre and prepares to ride her horse, Grane, into the flames. The Rhinemaidens take the ring from the ashes and drag Hagen to his death. Valhalla, the home of the Gods, bursts into flames.

When Edgardo is sent to France, he and Lucia exchange rings. Enrico tells Lucia her lover is unfaithful and she agrees to marry Arturo. Edgardo returns from France to find her married, curses her infidelity and accepts Enrico’s challenge to a duel. That night, Lucia’s misery sends her insane and she kills her husband, Arturo, and then herself. When Edgardo learns that Lucia is dead and has been true to him, he kills himself.

On the banks of the Hydaspes River in India, Alexander the Great is confronted by two powerful Indian rulers, King Poros and Queen Cleophis, each commanding huge armies.
