Skillington is a predominantly stone, Lincolnshire conservation village noted in the Domesday Book, on the edge of the Vale of Belvoir, with easy access to the A1 Great North Road, north of Stamford and south of Grantham, providing excellent communications by road in every direction. A ten minute drive takes you into Grantham for superb schools and fast trains to London Kings Cross taking just over an hour, whilst beautiful Stamford, also with outstanding schools, is about twenty minutes south on the A1, and the border of Leicestershire is three miles west. Far House sits in an elevated position in the heart of the village with a fantastic aspect. It is a beautifully presented, substantial home full of character with five bedrooms in the main house set over two floors and a one bedroomed annex of considerable size bordering the cobbled and gravelled courtyard behind, where there is also a connected outbuilding comprising a separate stable and barn. “We believe the house dates back to the late 18th century, was originally a farmhouse and is constructed of local stone with a pantile roof,” says the owner. It has been designated a ‘positive unlisted building’ by Historic England and described as ‘a very good example of a property that makes a contribution to the character and conservation of the area’. The bespoke kitchen and the adjacent sitting room with inglenook fireplace and wood-burner, is very much the hub of the house. Further reception rooms are a dining room and another more formal sitting room with an open fire.

All these principal rooms face south, the kitchen with French doors onto the garden making a lovely connection with the outdoors. Exposed stone and a wealth of original overhead beams are wonderful features throughout the home which has been enhanced by the neutral palette, whilst the combination of the old and the new is displayed in the contemporary master en suite, with its free standing, elliptical bath and separate shower, accessed by a wooden spiral staircase as it sits on the floor below the master bedroom in the eaves. Much work has been carried out to achieve the extensive home of today. “Between 2005 and 2006 we converted a number of the outbuildings to create a 1-bedroom annex which has accommodated family, both young and old, over the years,” informs the owner. “We carefully retained original features, at the same time fitting a kitchen and en suite bathroom. We also extended the main house to further open up the roof-space and add a large en suite bathroom accessed via a spiral staircase, and we acquired an additional outbuilding to ensure we could maintain our equestrian interests.” The annex is a considerable asset to the property, so close at hand and very light and spacious. The bedroom has a vaulted ceiling with exposed beams, the kitchen has glazing down to the ground over the courtyard to the east, and the dining area leads directly into the sitting room with its vast rooflights in the vaulted ceiling and logburner in the corner.

The courtyard, which will comfortably accommodate a number of cars, is accessed through automatically operated, solid timber gates. The good sized front garden is south facing with dry-stone wall boundaries and screened by trees, hedging and fencing making it both sheltered and secure. A cobbled terrace is directly outside the front of the house from where steps lead down to an attractive landscaped gravelled patio space and children’s playhouse, curving paths, lawns and beds recently re-stocked with help from a local professional. The Skillington community runs various events throughout the year based around the Church, the Methodist Chapel and the village hall. The Cross Swords Inn, the village pub, serves food and local ales whilst the Tollemache Arms in Buckminster and The Chomeley Arms in Burton Coggles are a five and fifteen minute drive respectively.

The award winning Olive Branch in Clipsham and The Jackson Stops in Stretton are also within easy reach. The area is well catered for schools with an excellent choice of nursery, primary and secondary schools including the highly sought after grammar schools in Grantham, The King’s School ( for boys) and Kesteven Grammar School for Girls, both rated Outstanding by Ofsted. “The village provides a hall, playing fields, a pub, a local air field (gliding club),is excellent for dog-walking and horse-riding” enthuses the owner. “We are only 8 miles from Grantham station which enables a fast-track commute to central London via Kings Cross, something I did to Covent Garden in under 2 hours door to door for over 5 years . We are also within a 20 minutes drive of Oakham, Stamford and ‘the rural capital of food’, Melton Mowbray”. The present owners arrived in Skillington and Far House in 1999 and their 22 years in the property is testament to the village, the neighbours and residents and the accessibility to Rutland and South Kesteven’s market towns, the Vale of Belvoir and easy access to excellent road and rail links.
