The festival is set to turn Geelong into a vibrant music hub, attracting locals and visitors who want to enjoy great performances and a friendly community vibe.

The festival started over a decade ago to celebrate live jazz and blues in Geelong. What began as a small community event has grown into a major annual festival, showcasing local talent and national acts while drawing music lovers from across Victoria.

The festival offers more than just entertainment. It plays a key role in the city by supporting tourism, helping local businesses, and boosting the live music scene throughout Victoria. During the event, hotels, cafes, and shops receive more visitors, while local artists get the chance to perform alongside well-known musicians from across the country and beyond.

Visitors can look forward to music in various spots around the city. There will be free outdoor street stages, performances along the waterfront, and ticketed concerts at local venues. Workshops and music sessions will give young and aspiring performers the chance to learn from experienced artists, while jam sessions will let musicians play together in fun and relaxed settings. The music will feature a wide range of styles, from classic jazz and big band sounds to modern jazz, blues, and roots music.

One of the festival’s biggest strengths is its family-friendly atmosphere. Many shows are free, making it easy for families to attend and enjoy the experience together. Accessible venues, mainly along Little Malop St., help ensure everyone can participate. Between performances, visitors can stroll along the beautiful Geelong Waterfront, explore local shops, or relax in one of the city’s many cafes and restaurants.

The festival continues to thrive thanks to the dedication of volunteers, support from sponsors, and strong community involvement. Their efforts keep the event welcoming, affordable, and enjoyable for all.

Whether you love jazz, enjoy live music, or simply want a fun day out, the festival is worth attending. Bring your family, invite your friends, and experience the music, energy, and community spirit that make this event a highlight of the year.

“Our pets are cherished members of our families”

For many of us, our pets are cherished members of our families. Our four-legged friends provide companionship, teach us responsibility, and enrich our lives in many ways.

The City of Greater Geelong is known as a dog-loving municipality with around 32,500 registered dogs as of February 2026 – a huge paw-pulation!

I am the proud pet-parent of Beau and Benji, two dogs that certainly brighten my day when I come home from work.

So, it’s an absolute pleasure to see our community banding together for the PAWS for GAWS fundraiser each year in March.

This annual event is a local favourite, bringing humans and canines together for a 4km circuit around the Geelong Botanic Gardens to raise vital funds for the Geelong Animal Welfare Society, best-known locally by its acronym, GAWS.

This year Eastern Beach was a hub of wagging tails, with well-groomed good boys taking part in the Pooch Parade.

GAWS also hosted an adoption parade for canines currently in their care looking for prospective owners – a great chance for those looking to give a pup a second lease on life.

It’s always fantastic to see so many people and their pets coming together for such a brilliant cause. Since 1956, GAWS has provided best practice care, community education and re-homing programs to the region.

In 2025, almost 2,000 animals were adopted, reclaimed or placed in the care of an animal rescue group through the society’s shelter and rehoming programs – ensuring these creatures could continue to live happy lives in their fur-ever homes.

None of these success stories would be possible without the tireless dedication of the 450 volunteers at GAWS.

The shelter at GAWS is not-for-profit and relies on the generous support of the community to deliver this vital work.

So, while events like PAWS for GAWS may seem like a simple walk in the park, they are integral to the ongoing success of the organisation’s programs.

WHEN STANDARDS START TO SLIP IN YOUR BUSINESS (AND NO ONE SAYS IT OUT LOUD)

There’s a moment that happens in almost every business.

It doesn’t matter if you’re running a large corporation, a growing local company, a family business, or a volunteer-led community group like many we have across Geelong and surrounding regions.

After a while, something starts to change.

Not in a big, scary way.

No one storms out.

Nothing crashes and burns.

There’s no urgent phone call or latenight crisis.

It’s much quieter than that.

It feels a little like this...

You sit in a meeting and realise you’re going around in circles.

A simple decision drags on for days.

People nod… but don’t really check they’re on the same page.

Or perhaps,

You go home with that tight feeling in your chest because you’re holding too much in your head.

It’s not overly noisy, nor necessarily visible chaos.

It’s just a slow, heavy drift - and you can feel it.

From the outside, it all looks fine. But inside, it’s definitely feeling heavier.

Slower too. And a bit off track.

I saw this up close recently when I stepped back into a room with a small local leadership team I hadn’t worked with for almost two months. They’ve been navigating change - one partner stepping

further into responsibility, roles shifting, new expectations forming. The kind of change many businesses move through without stopping to think about what it’s doing to the foundations.

Two months is long enough for standards to loosen at any time.

Not fall apart.

Just loosen.

Before I arrived, I wondered what I would see. Would the weekly meeting still be sharp? Would ownership still be clear? Or would old habits have crept back in?

What I found (pleasantly) surprised me.

The meeting was still there - but more importantly, it had purpose. They were clear on what mattered that week. There was less talking around issues and more direct decisions.

One of them said, “I don’t feel like I’m carrying everything in my head anymore.”

That’s not about being busy. That’s about clarity.

And here’s what really made the difference.

While we hadn’t met, I’d assigned a task to the original founder; go back to basics. Not the marketing. Not the systems.

The foundations...

Why are we here?

What are we building?

What do we stand for?

What standard are we holding, even when things get busy?

This didn’t require a big strategy day. Just honest conversations. And resetting what mattered.

That simple step changed the tone of the leader. And then the team.

Over the years, I’ve seen this pattern often. When things feel frustrating or flat, people think it’s a motivation problem. They assume someone needs to try harder.

But most of the time, it’s not about effort. It’s about foundations.

When the purpose isn’t clear, people hesitate.

When roles aren’t clear, tension builds.

When standards aren’t spoken about, they slowly drop.

And because it happens slowly, no one notices until the weight builds up and it’s sitting on everyone’s shoulders!

Strong leadership doesn’t always look bold or dramatic. Often, it looks steady. It looks like people pausing long enough to realign. It looks like clarity returning to the room.

If you’ve felt that quiet drift in your business, your club, or your organisation, it may not be time to add more tools or more pressure...

It may simply be time to revisit the foundations.

The purpose.

The direction.

The expectations.

Those conversations are practical. They’re doable. And they can change everything.

If this is feeling all to familiar and you’d like to talk through where to start to bring on some change, you’re welcome to book a 30-minute chat with me through this link.

It’s amazing what a bit of clarity can help.

Why it’s smart to accept payments online

One of the best things about online shopping is instant, hassle-free payment. Enter your details, click, and you’re done. If your customers can make an instant online payment, they’re likely to pay you more quickly – and they’ll appreciate the simplicity too.

The details

Online payment methods include credit and debit cards, ACH (Automated Clearing House) services like Paypal, and repeat payments through direct debit. Payments are managed by merchant

service providers – specialist companies that process transactions on your behalf. Some focus on credit and debit cards, while others stick to ACH or direct debit.

Choose a provider that can integrate with your accounting software, and you can add a super-simple payment button to future invoices.

The costs

While your merchant service provider shouldn’t charge any set-up fees, they will charge transaction fees. These range from 2-4% of the invoice for debit or credit cards, and under $2 a transaction for direct debit.

These fees are an added expense, so they need to be included in your profit calculation – smart accounting software will do this automatically.

Because credit and debit fees can add up, many businesses don’t offer online payment for invoices over a certain amount.

The benefits

Businesses using online payments get paid faster. Of course, not every client will pay instantly just because they have the option, but it should speed up your average payment time.

A bonus benefit? Customers appreciate the ability to pay online, so offering it as an option can be a big point in your favour.

Common bookkeeping mistakes small businesses make

BOOKKEEPING

Running a small business means wearing a lot of hats. One minute you’re serving customers, the next you’re handling marketing, and somewhere in between you’re trying to keep your books up to date. Bookkeeping might not be the most exciting part of running a business but getting it wrong can cause serious headaches. The good news? Most bookkeeping mistakes are common and totally avoidable.

Let’s walk through some of the biggest ones small businesses make and how you can steer clear of them.

1. Mixing personal and business finances. This is incredibly common, especially in the early days. You swipe your personal card for a quick business purchase or transfer money back and forth without much thought. The problem is that it creates a messy paper trail. When tax time rolls around, you’ll spend hours trying to untangle what was business and what wasn’t.

The fix: open a dedicated business bank account and use it consistently. It makes tracking income and expenses so much cleaner.

2. Not keeping receipts – This makes it difficult to verify expenses and claim deductions come tax time. Without receipts, you generally cannot claim the deduction – a costly mistake.

The fix: Use digital apps to scan and store receipts consistently ie Hubdoc in Xero.

3. Poor record-keeping – missing invoices and delayed data entry can lead to inaccurate financial records.

The fix: Update your books weekly and ideally use accounting software such as Xero to help speed up and semiautomate the process.

4. Ignoring cashflow – when you don’t follow up on outstanding invoices for work you have done and haven’t planned ahead for future expenses, you can run into some cashflow issues causing you unnecessary stress.

The fix: Ensure you have a system in place for following up on payments from clients and know what expenses you have coming up. This could be through a spreadsheet, having reminders set up for regular expenses, or again using accounting software such as Xero.

5. Misclassifying expenses – This can distort financial reports and cause issues at tax time.

The fix: Learn basic accounting categories or speak with a professional for guidance.

6. Forgetting about taxes – Not setting aside money for taxes can result in financial strain when it comes time to lodging your tax return.

The fix: Set aside a percentage of revenue for taxes. If you have previously lodged a return that resulted in you owing money to the ATO, you may already have been added to the PAYG Instalment system which means prepaying an estimate of your tax debt in Quarterly instalments. This helps, but you still need to have the money saved for each quarter.

7. Trying to do everything alone (to save money) – You have your skillset and this may not be bookkeeping. This could open

you up to making costly mistakes. Simply using accounting software such as Xero can help with this for a small monthly (deductible) cost. Hiring a bookkeeper for a few hours a month to help keep on top of everything can also be money well spent.

The fix – Use accounting software and/ or hire a bookkeeper.

8. Not understanding your business financials – This prevents you from being able to make informed decisions about your business, whether that be which product/ service to drop, when to expand your business, when to take on extra staff etc.

The fix: Generate monthly financial reports. If you have an accountant or bookkeeper, discuss the reports so you understand what they mean and how they impact your business.

At the end of the day, bookkeeping isn’t just about staying out of trouble with taxes. It’s about understanding your business. Clean, accurate books help you make smarter decisions, spot problems early, and plan confidently for growth. With a few good habits and the right support, you can avoid the most common mistakes and keep your business finances on solid ground.

How to Effectively Manage Volunteers: A Practical Guide

DIGITAL MEDIA

Volunteers are the backbone of many non-profits, providing essential support and resources to help further your mission.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to managing volunteers effectively:

1. Set Clear Expectations

From the outset, define specific roles, responsibilities, and goals for each volunteer.

Clear expectations help ensure that everyone understands their contributions and how they align with the organisation’s objectives.

This clarity can significantly enhance engagement and accountability.

2. Provide Comprehensive Training

Equip your volunteers with the necessary tools and knowledge to succeed in their roles.

Offering thorough training sessions not only prepares them for their tasks but also boosts their confidence.

Regularly update training materials to reflect new processes or policies, ensuring that volunteers always have the most current information.

3. Show Appreciation Regularly

Acknowledge and recognise the hard work and contributions of your volunteers.

Regularly expressing gratitude whether through shout-outs at meetings, personalised thank-you notes, or volunteer appreciation events - can strengthen morale and loyalty.

Celebrating milestones and successes together also fosters a sense of community and belonging.

4. Offer Growth Opportunities

Encourage volunteers to develop their skills and take on leadership roles.

Providing opportunities for advancement can motivate dedicated volunteers to deepen their commitment.

Consider implementing mentorship programs or offering workshops to help them grow professionally while benefiting your organisation.

5. Maintain Open Communication

Foster an environment where volunteers feel comfortable sharing their feedback and concerns.

Regular check-ins can help address any issues before they escalate and allow you to gather valuable insights on their experiences.

6. Create a Community

Build a supportive community among your volunteers.

Organise social events, team-building activities, or group projects to enhance relationships and foster collaboration.

A strong community can lead to higher retention rates and a more engaged volunteer base.

7. Evaluate and Adapt

Periodically assess your volunteer management practices to identify areas for improvement.

Gather feedback from volunteers about their experiences and adjust your strategies accordingly.

This continuous improvement approach can help ensure that your volunteer program remains effective and responsive to their needs.

By implementing these tips, your non-profit can cultivate a dedicated and effective volunteer team that enhances your mission and supports your organisation’s growth.

Engaged volunteers are not only more productive but also become ambassadors for your cause, spreading awareness and enthusiasm within the community.

Preparing for the Perfect Paint Job

When it comes to interior painting, the quality of preparation determines the success of the final result. Getting a room ready for painting can be timeconsuming and labour-intensive, but with the right steps, you’ll enjoy smooth, beautiful walls every time.

Preparing the Room

Start by shifting as much furniture out of the room as possible. Cover what remains with canvas drop cloths-unlike old cotton sheets or plastic, canvas absorbs paint and prevents leaks. For awkwardly shaped furniture, cling wrap works well.

Next, dust all surfaces to be painted-even if they look clean. Dust and tiny fibres can interfere with paint adhesion. A damp cloth can do the job, but a long-handled microfiber duster (preferably with an extension handle for ceilings) works best. Wearing a face mask is also wise, even if you don’t suffer from allergies.

To tackle cobwebs and uninvited critters, use a long-handled brush. Apply painter’s tape where unpainted and painted surfaces meet, pressing it down firmly with a putty knife to prevent paint bleed. Inspect walls for dents or cracks,

filling them with a small amount of putty. Smooth off the excess, then sand lightly once dry.

Washing the Walls

Whether you’re painting yourself or hiring professionals, washing the walls is essential. Keep in mind that many professional painters charge extra for this step. You can either hire a cleaner or handle it yourself.

Using a sponge mop, wash the walls (and ceilings if necessary) with a solution of sugar soap—also known as TSP (trisodium phosphate). This is especially important in kitchens where grease buildup can prevent paint from sticking. Sugar soap is also recommended on walls previously coated with satin or gloss finishes, as these surfaces can cause new paint to crack. Be aware that sugar soap may darken certain woods, such as mahogany.

To use, wear rubber gloves and goggles, then mix sugar soap into a bucket of warm water until fully dissolved. Dip the sponge mop into the solution, wipe down the walls, then rinse with clean water. Allow everything to dry completely before painting.

For small rooms, convenient alternatives like Selley’s Sugar Soap Wipes work well—use the smooth side to clean and

the textured side to scrub. For stubborn marks, try a Mr Clean Eraser Pad Block Cut it to size, test on an inconspicuous spot, and scrub away scribbles or oil stains before rinsing.

Painting the Room

Set up a safe, organised workspace. Keep pathways to the door clear and avoid situations where you have to reach across ladders or paint equipment.

While painting, cover trays with aluminium foil, plastic, or a garbage bag to make cleanup easier. Place a paper plate or baking foil under each can to catch drips, and keep a damp cloth handy to wipe spills before they dry.

When opening paint tins, splatter can be an issue—even if you close them carefully. To avoid mess, punch a series of holes in the rim’s channel using a nail punch or hammer and nails. This allows paint to drain back into the can rather than pooling.

For brushes, stretch a rubber band or tie a piece of string across the top of the can. Scraping brushes against this instead of the rim prevents excess paint buildup and keeps the can clean.

With careful preparation, your painting project will not only go smoothly but also deliver professional-looking results. A little extra time and effort before you start truly pays off when you see the flawless finish on your walls.

What Your Poo Says About Gut Health

NATUROPATHY

As a naturopath, I find myself very comfortable talking about bowel motions, as it gives me vital information about both digestion and elimination of toxins. Observing what lands in the toilet helps me to understand so much more about digestion, and as a result, how to improve it.

Your bowel motions can tell you a lot about what’s happening inside your digestive system. In clinic, I often ask detailed questions about frequency, consistency, colour, and even flatulence, and how bad it smells! It’s not glamorous, but it is incredibly useful information.

Many people assume that as long as they are going regularly, everything must be fine. But there are some simple signs that can indicate whether your digestion is working well — or whether it might need some support.

How Often Should You Be Going?

For most people, anywhere between once and three times per day is healthy, so long as it is not difficult to pass and is well-formed.

If you are going less than once per day, it may indicate:

• Slower gut motility

• Inadequate fibre intake

• Not enough fluid

• Stress affecting digestion

• Thyroid or metabolic issues

Regular constipation isn’t just uncomfortable. It can also mean that you’re not eliminating toxins well, and they can be reabsorbed in the colon

and cause damage throughout your body. This can lead to bloating, hormone imbalance, skin issues, high cholesterol, and contribute to fatigue.

What About the Shape and Consistency?

There is a tool called the Bristol Stool Chart that categorises stool types from hard pellets to entirely liquid. Ideally, you are aiming for something that resembles a smooth, soft sausage. Not hard and cracked. Not loose and urgent.

Hard, dry stools can suggest:

• Dehydration

• Low fibre intake

• Sluggish bowel motility

Loose or urgent stools may indicate:

• Food sensitivities

• Inflammation

• Infection

• Poor fat digestion

Occasional variation is normal. Persistent changes are worth investigating.

What Does Colour Tell You?

A healthy stool is generally medium to dark brown, like dairy milk chocolate. This colour comes from bile — which is produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder.

Very pale stools can indicate that bile flow is reduced. Since bile is essential for fat digestion, this can sometimes be associated with bloating after fatty meals or stools that float.

Black stools (not caused by iron supplements) or bright red blood should always be assessed by a doctor, as both can mean bleeding from the bowels.

Greeny yellow stools can occur after eating large amounts of leafy greens, but if persistent, may indicate food moving too quickly through the gut.

Floating vs Sinking

Stools that occasionally float are not usually a concern. However, frequent floating stools can suggest excess gas or poor fat digestion.

Fat digestion relies on adequate bile production and pancreatic enzymes. If the liver is sluggish or the gallbladder isn’t releasing bile efficiently, fats may not be broken down properly — which can contribute to bloating and discomfort.,

What About the Smell?

Bowel motions will never smell pleasant. But extremely strong, offensive odour can sometimes indicate imbalance in gut bacteria or incomplete digestion.

This is where looking at the whole picture matters — diet, stress levels, fibre intake, liver function, and metabolic health all play a role.

When Should You Seek Support?

If you notice:

• Persistent constipation

• Ongoing diarrhoea

• Regular bloating

• Mucus in stool

• Significant changes in bowel habits

…it’s worth looking deeper.

Whilst many people live with digestive symptoms, they are not something you simply have to put up with. The gut plays a central role in energy production, immune balance, and hormone regulation. When digestion improves, many other areas of health improve alongside it.

Supporting Healthy Bowel Motions Naturally

Some simple starting points include:

• Increasing wholefood fibre gradually

• Eating plenty of vegetables and a variety of vegetables

• Drinking adequate water

• Regular movement (walking is excellent for motility)

• Eating slowly and chewing properly

Each person is different, so what works for one may not work for another. But paying attention to what your poo is telling you is a simple and surprisingly powerful place to start.

Your digestive system gives you feedback every day. The question is whether you’re listening or not.

“Stories of Support: Small Changes, Big Impact”

Carers often give it their all, but what happens when you need someone to care for you?

Maria has been doing hard yards as a carer, but her own health has taken a back seat. She felt guilty even thinking about taking time out, believing her dignity had to come second to duty.

Her local carer support team reminded her that: you can’t pour from an empty cup.

A simple Aussie truth but hits hard.

Maria’s path to balance didn’t mean packing it all in – it came down to a smart strategy and compassion. She practiced a “15-Minute Rule” each morning for a moment of calmness. Small, practical change that made a massive difference – not just for her, but for the quality of care she gave her mum.

Maria’ story is a powerful reminder that empowerment begins with boundaries. It’s about honoring yourself so you can keep showing up for others.

Wellbeing Tip of the Week:

Start small - recharge daily. Set aside at least 15 minutes each day for something that nourishes you - a quiet cuppa, a short walk, or a quick stretch. Consistent, simple habits create lasting wellbeing. Remember, caring for yourself isn’t selfishit’s essential.

EDDY KONTELJ elected as Deputy Mayor

Council has elected Councillor Eddy Kontelj as Deputy Mayor after Councillor Ron Nelson announced he would step down from the role at last month.

Cr Kontelj will serve as Deputy Mayor until November, when Council will vote on both the mayor and deputy mayor positions.

Hamlyn Heights Ward Councillor Eddy Kontelj has served as a councillor for almost 15 years during two stints on Council from March 2010 to April 2016 and from November 2017 to the present.

Cr Kontelj chairs Council’s Arts & Culture, Hospitality & Live Entertainment portfolio and Sports & Recreation portfolio.

He represents Council on the Geelong Major Events Delegated Committee, the Planning Committee, the Submissions Review Panel and the Geelong Art Gallery board.

Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

“Cr Kontelj brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position, and is passionate about representing Greater Geelong.

I look forward to working constructively with him.”

Deputy Mayor Eddy Kontelj

“To the community, thank you for trusting in me since 2010.

To represent you at Council in this chamber is one of the greatest honours of my life. It’s not something I take lightly. I am extremely proud and will do the best possible job for the community.

I certainly feel like today I’m in the strongest position I’ve ever been in to take on Deputy Mayor, both in capacity and capability.

In those almost 15 years I’ve held almost every portfolio that we have. I’ve worked closely with nine Deputy Mayors and nine Mayors. I’d like to think I’ve been a good contributior and I’ve learned a lot about civic leadership in that time.”

Changes on the way for cat registration

We’re offering owners the opportunity to get at least 50 per cent off their registration renewal if they commit to keeping their cats contained at all times.

This new measure is aimed at reducing the number of roaming felines across the region, with the average cat clocking up to 300 kilometres per year.

Aligning with actions in the Victorian cat management strategy, increasing cat containment numbers helps reduce nuisance issues such as trespassing, fighting, spraying and unwanted litters (up to two litters each year per mating pair), while also improving cat safety, lowering vet bills, reducing pressure on shelters and protecting local wildlife.

The initiative recognises responsible ownership but is voluntary to sign up to. The existing dusk-to-dawn curfew rules remain unchanged.

To encourage community members to register their cats for the first time, we’re also giving owners a free first year of registration if their cats are microchipped and desexed.

Additionally, the City will be passing on the Victorian Government’s increased fee to councils of $4.51 to $9.00 per animal, as well as the growing cost of Animal Management services, which will see cat registration fees rise to $68 annually ($34 concession) per pet.

“Cat owners will soon spot changes to their annual notices when they are delivered via mail or email from Monday 9 March.

Registration is an important part of protecting cats and ensuring that lost pets are reunited with their owners, while keeping them safely contained helps them have healthier lives.

We know community members want the best for their cats and our containment incentive and free year of registration offer go towards helping to support responsible ownership.

Increased registration fees reflect rising fees from the Victorian Government and the growing costs of our services, such as responding to nuisance cat complaints, trapping and reunification.”

Councillor Chris Burson

“The ‘paws indoors, fees down’ commitment recognises the positive role responsible owners played in reducing roaming behaviour.

Indoor cats live safer and healthier lives and the savings on registration are an added bonus.

Owners of roaming cats face 400 per cent higher vet bills compared to contained cats because of attacks from other cats and dogs, accidents with cars and mishaps on the street.

In fact, fractures caused by road accidents are one of the top five reasons cats attend the vet, with an average bill of $836.”

City officially opens upgrades to Portarlington Recreation

Alison Marchant MP, Libby Coker MP, and Cr Rowan Story AM, RFD have officially opened new upgrades to Portarlington Recreation Reserve.

The upgrades include an improved pavilion, cricket training facility, oval, parking and shed, and are backed by $3.15 million in funding from the Victorian Government and $600,000 from the Australian Government.

They follow the continued growth of the Portarlington Football Netball Club, which fielded 13 football and 17 netball teams in winter last year.

Programs for young people are also strong, with over 80 Auskick and Net Set Go participants, and the club has aspirations to add a senior women’s team in 2026.

The new cricket training facility is already being used by the Portarlington Cricket Club, with three senior men’s teams, a senior women’s team and three junior sides competing this summer.

The Bellarine Agricultural Society also hosts its annual Bellarine Agricultural Show, with the expanded shed providing even more space to celebrate life on the Bellarine. This year’s event will be held on 8 March.

The upgrades will also benefit many other users, including the Portarlington Tennis Club, Girl Guides, and the Drysdale Clifton Springs Pickleball Club, through a new shared agreement which will bring over 300 new members to the reserve.

The works were completed by many contractors, including Avor Architecture, Orior Construction, Zinc Cost Management, 2MH Consultancy, BIS Infrastructure, Civelite, Electronic Signs Australia, and Turfcare.

Reserve

“These new upgrades mark a major step forward for local sport in this growing Bellarine suburb, creating more opportunities to participate, strengthening development pathways, and attracting major events to the region.

High quality sport and recreation facilities make it easier for Bellarine locals to get involved, enjoy the many benefits of community sport, and lead healthy, active lifestyles.”

“Portarlington has a storied sporting history, and these upgrades turn the page on a new chapter that’ll mean more opportunity for women to get involved while supporting the amazing programs that currently run at the reserve - that’s good for building a stronger and better-connected community.

The upgrades represent better sporting and community opportunities for locals and are also a permanent reminder of the tireless work put in by committee members, volunteers, and locals who fought so hard to keep this project moving through tough times.

I’d like to thank all members of the sporting and community clubs for their work in making this a reality and to the Victorian Government for its significant funding contribution”

Rowan Story AM, RFD, Murradoc Ward Councillor

“The range of different groups who benefit from Portarlington Recreation Reserve is extraordinary, from football and cricket to the highly-anticipated Bellarine Agricultural Show.

I’m pleased that these upgrades will allow even more groups to benefit, including opportunities to grow women’s sport.

The new parking and shared trails are also a highlight to make sure that everyone can come and go from the reserve safely”

Much-anticipated stage two of North Bellarine Aquatic Centre takes shape

Council, state, federal and community representatives have come together to tour construction activities of the North Bellarine Aquatic Centre stage two facilities and check on how the project is progressing.

As development on the indoor pools continues, a ceremonial sod turning was held yesterday with the project’s Community Advisory Panel and funding partners: Australian Government ($20 million under the Priority Community Infrastructure Program), Victorian Government ($20 million) and City of Greater Geelong (up to $300,000).

To ensure the safety of all users, we have rerouted access to the beloved 50-metre outdoor pool through an alternate entrance. This measure will remain in effect until mid to late April, when the facility will close until mid-October. This closure is necessary due to the highrisk construction activities taking place and the need to repurpose some of our plant equipment for the new indoor facility.

We will keep you updated on any disruptions ahead of time through the City’s social media channels, the project page and onsite signage.

Expected to open its doors to the community in mid-2027, the indoor centre will boast:

• twenty-five metre indoor pool with eight lanes and access ramp

• warm water pool with access ramp

• accessible change rooms

• first aid room

• gymnasium and group fitness rooms

• foyer, reception, administration and office

• café with seating

• landscaping and pathways

• extended car park with accessible spaces

• refurbishment of the entry pavilion.

Federal Member for Corangamite Libby Coker MP

Locals across the Bellarine are excited to see construction of the stage two facility well underway.

This is a legacy project that, together, we have fought for – it will make a real difference to so many locals across the North Bellarine and I thank the state government and Alison Marchant for their contribution.

Stage two includes so many amazing facilities, from a gym and cafe to the 25-metre pool and, importantly, the learn to swim pool – it’ll be great for families, older people, and so many people across the North Bellarine.

Member for Bellarine Alison Marchant MP

“Construction is an exciting milestone for our community, as we see this project come to life and deliver a fully accessible, year-round aquatic facility for Bellarine residents.

I can’t wait to see the community come together and make the most of these incredible new indoor spaces.”

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

“Construction on stage two of the North Bellarine Aquatic Centre is tracking well.

We’re thrilled to see the indoor facility and pool hall take shape.

Stage two is set to broaden the use of this critical facility and ensure residents from Portarlington, St Leonards and Indented Head never have to travel far to access aquatic facilities.

We’re incredibly grateful to the Australian and Victorian governments for recognising the value of this project’s indoor component and the benefits to Bellarine residents.”

St Leonards footpath mural gets students moving to school

The school gate just got a whole lot more colourful at St Leonards Primary School, with a vibrant new under-the-sea footpath mural inviting students to walk, ride, scoot and roll their way into the new year.

The ‘Ocean Water Way Mural’, co-designed by students and painted with artist Carla Gottgens, was completed before Christmas and features four playful sections inspired by life on the coast to encourage active journeys to the classroom.

The interactive mural is a highlight of Walk, Ride, Scoot and Roll Geelong, funded as part of a $110,000 grant from Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Kids Active Travel Program and $10,000 from the City of Greater Geelong. The program was rolled out across the region in partnership with Bellarine Community Health, and support from Active Geelong.

As part of the program, creative active travel measures were introduced at St Leonards, Portarlington, Leopold and Newcomb primary schools in 2025, including wayfinding signage, route maps, drop-off points, bike sheds, a pilot bike bus and the footpath mural.

The Walk, Ride, Scoot and Roll schools on the Bellarine Peninsula are working with Bellarine Community Health to keep the momentum going this year, with active travel events coming up in Term 1 around National Ride 2 School Day.

“It’s fantastic to see Bellarine kids getting active on their way to school, whether that’s on foot, on a bike or on a scooter. Projects like this show how investment in active travel helps kids build healthy habits, strengthens school communities and delivers practical outcomes for families.”

Murradoc

“By supporting active travel initiatives across our schools, we’re investing in healthier communities, safer journeys and more connected neighbourhoods. This is a marvellous example of creativity, collaboration and community pride, turning an everyday footpath into something that’s both fun and functional.”

“When active travel feels fun, safe and welcoming, children are more likely to participate”

St Leonards Primary School principal Melissa Smith

“Seeing our students so excited and actively involved in the project has been amazing. The mural captures our coastal environment and gives our students a real connection to place, while encouraging movement and imagination.”

Building on this success, the City of Greater Geelong has secured further funding for 2025–2027. This will expand the program to four Northern Bay P-12 College primary campuses and roll out a new Active Travel Toolkit to support up to 80 primary schools across the region.

MARCH 2026 EDITION

National Affordable Housing - Victoria (NAHV) Established in 2019.

National Affordable Housing - Victoria (NAHV) delivers stable housing outcomes through strategic partnerships. We believe that stable housing leads to strong communities.

NAHV - Building Stable Communities

NAHV is a regulated Community Housing Provider delivering safe, secure and affordable homes that we own and manage for Victorians.

We believe that from a platform of stable and secure housing, people have increased opportunity to achieve aspirational social and economic outcomes, empowering them to make choices and move in positive directions, knowing that they have place to call home.

Utilising our Housing Service Model, our allocation approach is designed to maximise the likelihood that an applicant can successfully sustain a tenancy in a specific property and within the local community. It deliberately balances housing need, personal capability, available supports, and property suitability.

As people come to housing with different circumstances we take a flexible approach:

• If someone already has support, we work with them and their support provider to agree on a clear plan for living well in the home.

• If someone needs support but doesn’t have it yet, we help connect them with the right services before or as they move in.

• If someone has complex needs but chooses not to have support, we carefully assess whether they can realistically manage a tenancy on their own.

• If someone is mostly independent but highly vulnerable, we still work with them on a simple housing plan and link them to support if needed.

Household rent in Community Housing is set at a percentage of household income to support households that may struggle within the private rental market, including:

• Lower income workers

• Older people

• People with disability

• Families on modest incomes

We offer long term stable and secure housing and ask in return for households to look after their homes, pay their rent on time and to be good and considerate neighbours.

Our homes are typically funded through a combination of government capital grants or subsidies and lending finance.

Our impact is measured not only in the number of homes delivered, but in the lives transformed through safe, stable, and inclusive housing environments.

NAHV Housing Management & Compliance

We deliver on behalf of Investors to deliver affordable housing outcomes, with a focus on commercial processes underpinned by an impact lens. We are Nationally Registered Community Housing provider and deliver services in Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales:

• tenancy management

• property management

• compliance services

We have a reputation of providing quality tenancy, property and compliance services, and a demonstrated track record meeting contractual and regulatory requirements, supporting planning approvals, ensuring compliance, and where applicable, the timely flow of government incentives to investors.

NAHV - Key Capabilities

We bring an owner’s mindset - owning and managing thousands of properties means we understand the challenge of advertising and assessing affordable housing applications, managing residents and maintaining assets, and the importance of minimising vacancies, managing cost, whilst optimising rental revenue.

We are regulatory experts and have good relationships with government and regulators.  We understand their drivers as well as the importance of securing your planning outcome and/or tax concessions and maintaining your reputation and meeting ongoing contractual and regulatory compliance obligations.

We offer tailored solutions – Your requirements will depend on your size, the business model, and whether you want to supplement your existing capability or completely outsource. We offer services from advertising, assessment, compliance and reporting through to tenancy management and property management depending on your needs.

We are easy to do business with – your relationships are with our senior team. Working with our investors in a collaborative and customerfocused way is our DNA.

We operate across the eastern seaboard - we have a strong presence in Victoria and Queensland and also operate in NSW. We are experienced leaders of consortium arrangements to support wider geographical reach where required and as a Nationally Registered Community Housing provider we can operate across other States.

Tradies...protect your tools

Whether on the road, at home or work, always keep your tools locked up securely in a heavyduty toolbox that has quality keyed locks and is fixed to your vehicle.

Tool theft can be devasting for tradies, especially those operating independently or as a small business. Not only do they have to fork out thousands of dollars for replacements, but may also be unable to work for awhile, affecting their income.

That’s why it’s important to know how to protect your tools, at home, on the road and at your jobsite. Here are some simple things you can do to keep your tools safe and make it harder for thieves to steal them.

Don’t leave tools unattended or in an unlocked vehicle. Criminals are opportunistic. If they see little risk and high value, your tools are gone.

Keep your vehicle locked, your tools out of sight, and both in a lock up garage.

Clearly mark your tools with a unique identifier, such as your driver’s licence number with a “V” before it. Use an engraver or a UV pen. These are available from Neighbourhood Watch.

Marking your tools might not prevent them from theft, but it can make them less attractive to steal as it can lower their value and make it harder for thieves to resell them. It’s also easier for police to identify your tools and return them to you when stolen and recovered.

Put a sign or sticker on your ute or toolbox saying all equipment and tools are marked. These are available from Neighbourhood Watch Bellarine. Email us at nhwbellarine@ gmail.com.

Property Vault – www.propertyvault.com.au offers an online “vault’ in which to record your tools, etc. Take a look.

Consider adding an air tag to trailers and tool boxes.

Taking photos of your tools and identifiable features can also help police track them down in the event they have been stolen.

From Victoria Police:

Attention tradies!

It’s tools down… but are your tools locked down?

Just like your wallet or laptop, tools left in your vehicle can look like a jackpot to opportunistic thieves. Don’t let your hard work walk off overnight.

To keep your gear where it belongs (with you), drill these tips into your brain:

• Take all valuables out of your vehicle

• If something must stay, stash it in a closed compartment or glove box

• Lock your vehicle every time — even at home

• Clear tools from the cab and tray

• Lock up all toolboxes properly

A minute of prevention beats the headache of replacement. For more information on keeping, you and your property safe. https://www.police.vic.gov.au/home-and-property

Stay vigilant and report suspicious behaviour

Always be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity to site supervisors or the police. Keep a watch for any strangers or unauthorised people loitering around jobs sites or tradies’ vehicles. Being vigilant and proactive can help prevent theft.

Some quotes from local tradies who have been victims of theft in recent months in the Geelong area.

• This morning the smack heads are back …… stole my hand tools but it was the specialist crimpers that’s annoyed me the most …… worth a few thousand dollars.

• My truck was broken into last night. All tools stolen. Big brand tools stolen. Milwaukee or Makita big impact rattle guns, heaps of other stuff. Not only have you stolen my tools but also my livelihood.

Dr. Billy Garvey

Dr. Billy Garvey is a paediatrician of considerable note, based at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. I can’t recommend his work highly enough.

I’ve recently listened to the following podcast featuring Billy Garvey and found it captivating:

https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/theimperfects/id1476501557?i=1000670324725

Garvey discusses some themes that are extremely helpful for any parent or caregiver, including the importance of good modelling. He highlights that the behaviour parents and carers model, has the biggest influence on determining children’s behaviour. Children follow their parents and carers’ example more than anything else.

Related to good modelling, Garvey describes coregulation. He explains that regulating our own behaviour is the single most effective strategy in helping to deal with our children’s dysregulation. Garvey emphasises the importance of self-care. He explains that it is very difficult to help support our children if we as parents and carers have poor mental/emotional health. It’s vital that we keep ourselves healthy and gain help for ourselves where necessary.

If you like the above podcast, the following podcast may also be of interest: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/episode-091-the-matrix-bigfeelings/id1600660063?i=1000663648509

Talking Energy: Building Confidence to Support Our Community to Get Off Gas

This is a great opportunity to learn practical skills for having meaningful, respectful conversations about electrification and the transition away from gas, something many people in our community are curious (and sometimes confused) about right now.

With so many mixed messages and misinformation out there and new gas import terminals being proposed in our local bays, our volunteers have been telling us they want to feel more confident talking about these issues with friends, family, neighbours, and the broader community.

This training is designed to support exactly that.

You’ll learn:

• What people in our community currently think about gas and electrification.

• How to have constructive conversations, even when people see things differently.

• How to listen for concerns and respond in helpful, grounded ways.

• A simple conversation tool that helps open up deeper discussions.

This training will be offered to us by Environment Victoria, a great organisation to learn from with decades of experience in this area.

Where: Cloverdale Community Centre, 167-169 Purnell Rd, Corio VIC

Date: Saturday 14 March

Time: 9.30am–12.00pm

Laughter in the Workplace: The Secret to Connection, Collaboration and Productivity Laughter in the Workplace: The Secret to Connection, Collaboration and Productivity

If you want a team that works cohesively together, communicates well and genuinely enjoys coming to work, would you be interested in knowing more?

The answer is laughter. Not comedy, not jokes that can fall flat or be inappropriate, but laughter as a human connector - the shortest distance between two people. In as little as half an hour, laughter can transform the energy of a workplace, whether you have a team of three or three hundred. And it can be done face-to-face or virtually.

Laughter acts as a great ego leveller. Whether you are at the front counter, working on the shop floor, or sitting in the CEO’s chair, everyone enters the session as equals. It is a deeply human moment and workplaces thrive on those.

Laughter is like internal jogging. It uses muscles throughout the body, engages both hemispheres of the brain, and brings people into the present moment. When you are laughing, you are not worrying, overthinking, or holding back.

In many workplaces, including engineering and manufacturing companies, teams now use laughter for fifteen minutes during shift changeover to increase alertness, morale, and energy. It works because it is simple, natural, and universal.

If you would like to explore what laughter can do for your team, put aside one Saturday morning at 9:00am and join in a laughter yoga session held at Eastern Beach Geelong in front of the wading pool.

Laughter creates a positive environment. When people feel better, they work better.

Call 0418 521 265 or email phillipa@livelifelaughing.com.au for further information.

LEOPOLD SPORTSMANS CLUB

In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.

In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation.

You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club.

There are so many people to thank over many years for their support, encouragement and voluntary help along with the the original crew that helped established the club.

Leopold Sporties, located in Leopold, Victoria, is a club based on sports. We offer Bowls, both social and Pennant, Golf, Racquet Ball and Squash.

Over 650 athletes from 11 centres participated across 2 days and 86 were Corio athletes. There were 2348 event entries across the weekend.

Region Carnivals are open to all athletes under 9-17 and are a great opportunity to make friends from other centres and then continue to meet up at future events.

Athlete Mason says; “I really enjoy competing at Region level as it gives me experience against kids from all over the Region. It motivates me to get better at each event.”

For athlete Elena, it was her first time at a Region event, and she said of the experience “Regionals are a fun day. It motivates me to push harder for a PB, and I get to meet new people.”

Medals are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd, and other top 8 placings receive ribbons. Region carnivals also serve as qualifying events for the State Track and Field Championships to be held in March. Corio is very excited to have 48 athletes qualify in 97 events in the State Championships.

Corio’s summer season finished at the end of February, with the annual Corio Centre Championships, sponsored by Viva Energy.

Athletes choose their favourite events and compete for medals. Athletes who don’t place in any event are offered a participation medal and can also stand on the podium if they would like to.

A feature event introduced last season is the Corio Gift, an invitational handicap 100m for the fastest girl and boy in each age group and sponsored by Corio’s 2 major sponsors, Viva Energy and GeelongPort.

Athletes are now looking ahead to the winter cross-country season which begins in early May. Athletes run age-appropriate distances on courses in various parkland locations around Geelong, Golden Plains and Lara areas.

For athletes registered in summer, the winter season is included in their registration. New athletes pay a reduced registration fee.

Celebrating the legacy of ABBA, this tour is a glittering, feel-good revival of their greatest hits.

Praised by Metallica, Nirvana, Sir Tom Jones, and even ABBA themselves, this global sensation has wowed audiences from Wembley Stadium and the Sydney Opera House to Glastonbury Festival.

THEATRE

“An hour before I meet my dad for the first time, I’m half an hour late to a thirty minute soundcheck...”

When Connor Morel was 18, his dad walked into one of his gigs. They had never met before. That moment became the start of a question he’s been trying to answer ever since: what makes a decent man? And what the f*** does that even mean?

Good Man is an unflinching new rock monologue that fuses blistering original songs with comedic, intimate storytelling. Backed by a live fourpiece band, Connor takes audiences on a humorous yet moving journey through masculinity and the lessons we learn without even knowing it.

Equal parts concert and confessional, Good Man hums with the electricity of a gig, the warmth of a comedy night and the grit of a contemporary play. It’s about the dumb stuff we do because of the dumb stuff our role models did. And the tiny choices we have to make every day. And what happens when we have to grow the hell up and be a role model ourselves.

As Benny Andersson of ABBA said: “Fans better make the most out of Björn Again because that’s the closest they will get to seeing ABBA.”

Tickets won’t last - tell your mum, your grumpy teenager, even tell Fernando!

Fresh from a remarkable debut season, Connor – one of Australia’s most exciting new voices in gig-theatre – delivers a show that will make you laugh, think, and maybe even call your dad.

Who is Connor Morel?

Connor Morel is a critically acclaimed singer, actor, writer, and musician whose work spans stage, music, and comedy. Connor has toured nationally and internationally in hit musicals and plays, and developed an emerging reputation as one of Australia’s bold new theatre-makers.

The First Look | An Opening Round Blockbuster

Take a look ahead to Geelong’s Opening Round clash with the Gold Coast Suns, proudly presented by Villawood Properties

Geelong will head to the Sunshine State on Friday night as they look to start their season strongly, taking on the Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium.

It is set to be the Cats’ first trip to the Gold Coast in close to three years, a stadium they have not won at since Round 22 of the 2022 AFL season.

The most recent match-up between the two sides went Geelong’s way, but both the Cats and Suns could potentially take vastly different looking line-ups into Friday night’s clash.

With the likes of Bailey Smith and Max Holmes set to go toe-totoe with Noah Anderson and Christian Petracca, it is set to be a riveting clash to open the season.

Take a look at all the key details you need to know below as Geelong commences their 2026 campaign.

People First Stadium, Gold Coast Friday March 6, 8.05pm AEDT

LAST TIME WE MET

The most recent clash between the two sides occurred in Round 13 last year, with Geelong prevailing by 24 points in difficult conditions at GMHBA Stadium.

With rain and wind prevalent throughout the afternoon, the Cats held the Suns to five goals for the game and behind a four-goal haul from Tyson Stengle, kicked away late to record an important victory.

Max Holmes was the standout collecting a career-high 40 disposals and 10 clearances, but he was well supported by Tom Atkins (23 disposals, eight clearances) and Tom Stewart (23 disposals, 14 marks).

HOW TO GET TICKETS

For Geelong supporters looking to attend Friday’s game, tickets can be purchased through Ticketek to secure your seat at People First Stadium.

There are also a number of Interstate and Queensland membership options available for 2026, with now the best time to join and catch all the action as the year unfolds.

WHERE TO WATCH

Geelong’s Opening Round clash will be broadcast live and free on Channel 7, prior to the opening bounce at 8.05pm AEDT.

The match will also be broadcast on Fox Footy and streamed through Kayo, while K rock will also be covering all the action from the Gold Coast.

Secure a Digital Plus Membership to watch all the action, which provides a 12-month subscription to Kayo Sports and other member benefits.

PLAYER TO WATCH

Tom Atkins

Geelong’s brilliant and tough on-baller was exceptional against Carlton last week, finishing the practice match with 27 disposals, 10 tackles and seven clearances.

It comes off the back of an outstanding 2025 campaign for Atkins, who averaged a career-high 19.7 disposals and 5.7 clearances per game, while also breaking the AFL record for the most tackles in a single season.

Atkins was important in Geelong’s most recent clash with Gold Coast, collecting 23 disposals and a goal in Round 13 last year which helped steer the Cats to victory.

KEY DETAILS

2026 AFL Season | Opening Round Gold Coast Suns vs Geelong Cats

Facing the likes of Noah Anderson, Touk Miller and Christian Petracca on Friday night, winning the midfield battle will be crucial for Geelong and there might not be any player more important than Tom Atkins.

Market Square was a town square located in the centre of Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

Consisting of eight acres (2.9 hectares) of land, the area was reserved by Governor Sir George Gipps as a town square during the initial surveying of Geelong. The area later became a produce market, before being progressively built upon. Today the Market Square Shopping Centre occupies the site, having been opened in 1985 by the City of Geelong.

GEtTING TO KNOW GEELONG

MARCH 2026

WATERFRONT

The Geelong Waterfront is one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts. Having started from humble beginnings when Geelong was founded as a port in 1836, the Waterfront has now attracted a series of prestigious awards.

This cosmopolitan and vibrant area is a hive of activity with restaurants and cafes, beautiful landscaped gardens, attractions and public art, all with amazing views of Corio Bay. It also provides a full events calendar, tourism, education and accommodation services:

Our historic Carousel, Poppy Kettle playground and youth activities area is great for kids of all ages. See Geelong’s famous bollards.

There are plenty of possibilities to explore and view the Waterfront: take a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, ride the trackless train if you prefer a more leisurely look around, check out the view from the air in a helicopter or take a boat cruise along Geelong’s spectacular Waterfront.

A visit to Geelong is not complete if you haven’t seen our spectacular waterfront.

POPPY KETTLE PLAYGROUND

Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jam-packed with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer.

The interactive play equipment includes a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, a swing, a boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net.

The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features.

A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.

This is one of the most perfectly positioned playgrounds for so many reasons.

SKATE PARK

Skate Parks in Geelong have a variety of facilities available for skate boarders, bladers and BMX bike riders including quarter pipes, handrails, funboxes, vert ramps, pyramids, banked ramps, and stairsets.

We strongly advise the wearing of helmets and padding when using our Skate Parks, and enforce compulsory wearing of helmets at all skate events.

Looking to get into skating or want to know more about skating in Geelong?

Young people interested in joining in activities can call the Skate Program Worker on 03 5272 5272.

We have more skate parks per capital than any other municipality in Australia.

CUNNINGHAM PIER

The Pier Geelong offers uninterrupted bay views stretching from Rippleside to Point Wilson and the Geelong City skyline. It provides a large impressive area catering for small events of up to 800 guests seated or 1000 guests’ cocktail style.

The venue also housed City Quarter Bar a trendly lounge bar on Level 1. With loft ceilings, three decks, comfortable lounges, fireplace, gourmet pizzas and world inspired tapas, CQ is perfect for hosting engagements, birthday parties, hen’s high teas or pre or post event drinks.

Also housed within this iconic building is Wah Wah Gee, a funky Asian-inspired restaurant, offering an extensive menu leaving you feeling satisfied and content in an exciting atmosphere. Enjoy our delicious cuisine with floor to ceiling views of Geelong’s bay - you’ll feel like you’re floating on water.

A jewel on Geelong’s waterfront or a bit of a white elephant. Once a working pier known as Railway Pier, it’s now neither a pleasure pier nor used for regular shipping.

ARTS & CULTURAL PRECINCT

The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong.

The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars.

The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.

Geelong Arts Centre, formerly the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, is a performing arts, functions and events venue located in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

OLD PAPER MILL

Geelong’s best kept secret The Fyansford Paper Mill is set on the Barwon River and overlooks the picturesque Buckley Falls. It was constructed in the 1870s and is one of the oldest paper mills in Australia.

The site is being transformed into a food, beverage, arts and cultural precinct, located within 10 minutes of Geelong’s CBD. With just under 5,000m2 of building space, the Mill is home to over 15 businesses, including a winery, café, gallery, yoga studio, homewares shop and escape room. There are also a number of small independent artists who have private studios across the site.

Visit the Fyansford Paper Mill one of Geelong’s historic places to visit. Discover all kinds of food, arts, activities, as well as our great history, see what’s on in Geelong here.

WESTERN BEACH

In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away.

Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront.

Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk.

Curving out over the water the boardwalk has wellplaced seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.

People have been swimming, boating, fishing and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840’s

RIPPLESIDE PLAYGROUND

Rippleside Park is a beautiful regional foreshore park located on the Bay Trail.

This well utilised park provides exercise equipment, BBQ facilities, beach access and open spaces with views over Corio Bay.

Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water.

Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views.

The City partnered with the Touched by Olivia Foundation and the Federal and State Governments to build a regional-level play area for children of all abilities to play together.

The park features:

• 4x Accessible BBQ’s and picnic facilities

• 4x Accessible parking bays

• Registered Changing Places

A community built wooden Adventure playground built over six days in 2001 with all the usual ramps, walkways, steps, nooks and crannies to explore.

STEAMPACKET GARDENS

A path on the northern edge connecting the gardens to the bay has seats where you can enjoy the sea breeze and watch the nearby helicopter toing and froing.

On the eastern side you’ll find the Wharfshed Cafe serving yummy meals and to the west sits the delightful historic carousel.

There are some interesting art sculptures dotted around the park. Be sure to check out the Volunteer Rifle Band bollards and The Buoys sculpture, a group of former channel buoys that have been turned into a powerful piece of artwork.

The Geelong Waterfront Makers and Growers market (Steampacket Market) is held here on the first Sunday of each month. This popular market offers local produce, beautiful art and handicrafts, and lots of tasty treats.

Located right beside the water Steampacket Gardens Geelong is a big rectangle of lush lawn that’s perfect for a relaxing picnic or a game of frisbee.

THE CAROUSEL

One of only a few in the world this beautifully restored carousel is considered by many to be the best that’s still in use today.

Housed in a modern steel and glass enclosure the pavilion has an old-world carnival atmosphere that’s enhanced by a pipe organ playing Dixieland melodies.

A ride on this enchanting carousel is a magical experience for children of all ages and abilities, with a mobility lift that assists wheelchairs onto the attraction.

Entry into the pavilion is free. Tickets to ride the Carousel are $5.00.

The Carousel Pavilion can be booked for wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, photo shoots, and private or corporate functions.

Housing a beautifully restored Carousel, this competitively priced, exclusive all-weather venue is available for private hire seven days a week from 3:00pm.

The Carousel Geelong is a rare 1892 Armitage-Herschell hand-carved wooden carousel.

OLD GAOL

The Geelong Gaol Museum is housed in the 170-year-old Geelong Gaol, the third oldest prison in Victoria. Opening in 1853 and closing in 1991 it housed male and female prisoners.

Over its history, it has been used as an industrial school for young girls, a hospital gaol and a military detention barracks. It was the site of 6 executions.

Today it houses display illustrating not only the history of the Geelong Gaol but the history of the corrections of Victoria.

It features displays on the Hulks, Colonial Prisons, Executions and Saga Behind the Armour along with some of the prisoner stories who have spent time behind the bluestone walls.

The Geelong Gaol Museum is open on weekends, school holidays and public holidays.

RETIREMENT

It is estimated that over 2.5 million Australians, or 8.5% of the current population of around 28.9 million, will retire over the next decade. While the population has always been ageing, the next decade will see a significant increase in people retiring.

This trend has been a major concern for the government, as it already struggles with a growing aged care sector and programs, such as the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme), that continue to require greater amounts of funding to keep them sustainable. Unfortunately, the government keeps running out of money, and its only solution thus far has been to increase borrowing, which is exacerbating and not helping the current and future situation for sectors that rely on government funding.

To help potentially solve this problem, the government has been working on the Retirement Reporting Framework and Best Practice Principles for Superannuation Retirement Income Solution. In February 2026, Treasury released an update to the Retirement Reporting Framework and Best Practice Principles for Superannuation Retirement Income Solutions.

These initiatives seek to enhance the retirement phase of Australia’s superannuation system. The reforms aim to ensure a balanced focus on both accumulation and retirement phases, providing members with improved access to suitable products, information, and strategies for better retirement outcomes. The Best Practice Principles offer voluntary guidance to trustees on understanding members’ needs, designing

Retirees Need to Consider Alternative Income Streams in Retirement

effective retirement income solutions such as lifetime income products. The Retirement Reporting Framework, to be implemented by APRA, will publish data on fund offerings and member outcomes to support industry improvements.

Whilst these Best Practice Principles are not mandatory to implement, we believe that superannuation funds that do not implement these Best Practice Principles may find themselves in an unfavourable position compared to their peers and may lose more members as a result. Superannuation funds that adopt these changes will likely promote their benefits to the public. Superannuation funds cannot afford to lose members, and so it is very likely that a superannuation fund will implement these principles in the near future.

Here is a summary of the key principles:

Understanding members’ retirement income needs

Best practice for understanding members’ retirement income needs means a trustee will:

1. Undertake regular research to ensure an up-to-date understanding of the composition of its membership base and how member characteristics, engagement preferences and retirement income needs are changing over time.

2. Use accessible data and behavioural research to inform the design of information, engagement strategies and guidance services.

3. Improve understanding of the membership base by:

• Identifying members who are in or approaching retirement.

• Gathering information on characteristics relevant to its members’ retirement income needs, including during retirement.

• Asking members about their engagement preferences.

4. For the purpose of the principles, develop at least three cohorts that reflect the composition of the membership at or approaching retirement to inform the design of retirement income solutions.

• Base cohorts on information held and gathered by the trustee.

• Use characteristics relevant to the development of retirement income solutions to develop cohorts, such as account balance and age.

Designing the elements of a quality retirement income solution

Best practice for designing the products and product settings to build quality retirement income solutions means a trustee will:

1. Provide their members with access to:

• A lifetime income product that is not the Age Pension.

• An account-based pension.

• Lump sums.

2. Design product settings that allow for the construction of retirement income solutions that meet members’ retirement income needs, including:

• Lifetime income product settings that have regard to member preferences around expected risk and return, for example managing longevity or investment risk.

• Account-based pension product settings that help to manage expected risks, for example sequencing, market and inflation risks.

• Trustee-designed drawdown pathways for accountbased pensions that more efficiently convert superannuation balances into income than the legislated minimum drawdown rates.

3. Allow all members that meet a relevant condition of release access to a retirement income solution that includes an account-based pension component, irrespective of account balance.

4. Ensure these products and product settings can be used to construct both trusteedesigned retirement income solutions and allow members to tailor their own retirement income solution.

Constructing retirement income solutions that meet members’ needs

Best practice for constructing retirement income solutions that meet members retirement income needs means a trustee will:

1. Construct a separate trustee-designed retirement income solution for each identified cohort, that balances members’ needs to maximise expected retirement income, manage expected risks, and maintain flexible access to capital. These should include:

• A lifetime income product component in at least one retirement income solution, that has regard to likely Age Pension eligibility.

• For most solutions, a drawdown pathway that is higher than the legislated minimum drawdown rate, considering stability of income delivered through relevant components.

2. Ensure each trustee-designed retirement income solution is broadly calibrated to the financial characteristics of a retiree cohort.

3. Design guidance services that assist members to understand and select the components of their retirement income solution, for example through personas or assisted choice tools.

Supporting member engagement with retirement income solutions

Best practice for supporting members to choose a retirement income solution means a trustee will:

1. Support all members to understand their retirement income needs by providing forecasts or projections of income in both annual and pay-cycle terms, including through:

• Annual member statements.

• Budgeting tools or expenditure calculators.

2. Foster member engagement during the accumulation phase by providing information and tools that can help members prepare for and understand their retirement income needs, including on:

• Moving into the retirement phase of superannuation.

• Classes of retirement products and drawdown pathways.

• Guidance services offered by the trustee.

• Government resources on retirement related topics, including information on non-superannuation sources of income in retirement such as the Age Pension and access to home equity.

3. Engage with members approaching retirement, to:

• Provide information on trustee-designed retirement income solutions and a description of the financial characteristics used to inform each solution.

• Inform them of how to access information on all retirement products offered by the fund.

• Encourage further engagement with information and guidance services to help inform members’ choice of retirement income solution.

4. Provide access to financial advice services that reflect the composition and preferences of its membership.

5. Consider members that receive personal financial advice in engagement strategies for members approaching retirement, including information on trustee-designed solutions.

Review and improve

1. Assess the effectiveness of its trustee-designed retirement income solutions in meeting the needs of its cohorts and consider relevant data on measurable outcomes, usage, and member behaviour to improve the quality of its retirement income solution offerings.

2. Assess the effectiveness of guidance services and engagement strategies in supporting members to navigate their retirement income solution choice and collect relevant data on member experiences.

3. Have regard to the changing needs of members approaching retirement (over the short and medium term) when assessing the ongoing settings of trustee-designed retirement income solutions.

For retirees, the most significant change they will experience over the next five years is the introduction of annuities and/or products for lifetime income streams that will be available in their current superannuation fund.

We believe the government will encourage members to not only take out an account-based pension (ABP) but to also place up to 30% of their funds into a lifetime income stream or similar income stream product.

Our opinion is that this initiative is a good move, as lifetime income streams provide a level of certainty and remove funds out of the market that may be subject to market volatility. Also, these income streams will remain even when members are moving into aged care and help pay some of their ongoing aged care fees.

At Find Retirement, we have promoted the benefits of a lifetime income stream or annuity for the past decade, and it is encouraging to see the government has finally recognised the wisdom of encouraging these products to be offered inside superannuation alongside ABPs.

If you wish to speak to an advisor that has many years of experience with lifetime income streams and can explain the benefits of them, then feel free to call Find Retirement on 1300 88 38 30.
