By Joe Lam The National Celtic Folk Festival; Origins and Its Rise to Prominence The National Celtic Folk Festival, now a major cultural highlight on Australia’s event calendar, has its roots in the creative communities of Maroondah and Geelong. Known today for transforming the quiet coastal town of Portarlington into a bustling hub of Celtic celebration every June, the festival began as a humble idea nurtured by a small group of passionate individuals — most notably festival founder and long-time director, Una McAlinden.

In the late 1990s, Maroondah’s vibrant community of musicians, storytellers, and arts advocates began exploring ways to celebrate and preserve their Celtic heritage. Small gatherings at local venues like Ringwood’s Karralyka Centre featured live Irish folk music, Scottish storytelling, and traditional dance. One of the driving forces behind these gatherings was McAlinden, a proud Irish-Australian with a background in arts education. She saw the potential for something much bigger — a festival that could celebrate the diverse traditions of the Celtic nations and bring together people from all walks of life.
