Engines Set to Roar Again at the 2025 Geelong Revival Motoring Show

Geelong’s iconic waterfront will transform into a celebration of speed, style, and community this November.

Motoring enthusiasts are gearing up for one of Victoria’s most anticipated annual events as the Geelong Revival Motoring Show returns to the Geelong Waterfront from November 28 to 30, 2025. The event promises an unforgettable weekend filled with classic cars, high-speed sprints, and vintage charm, bringing the golden age of motoring back to life.

Now in its 12th year, the Geelong Revival will once again line Ritchie Boulevard and Eastern Beach with hundreds of historic, exotic, and contemporary vehicles. Visitors can expect the return of the legendary National Sprint, where drivers will race the quarter-mile strip in a thrilling display of power and precision. A motoring expo will complement this signature event, vintage fashion competitions, and a Show ’n’ Shine that showcases everything from pre-war machines to modern supercars.

Event director Nicholas Heath says this year’s Revival will raise the bar even higher. “The Geelong Revival is more than a motorsport festival — it’s a living

celebration of engineering, design, and the community’s deep connection to motoring culture,” Heath said. “2025 will highlight not only the classics we love but also the exciting future of transport.”

That future will take centre stage in the expanded Electric Vehicle and Innovation Showcase, where manufacturers and tech pioneers will display the latest advancements in sustainable mobility. Meanwhile, local traders, food stalls, and live entertainment will keep the waterfront buzzing throughout the weekend, ensuring something for everyone — from lifelong enthusiasts to curious newcomers.

The event is expected to draw tens of thousands of visitors to Geelong, offering a major boost to the local economy.

Hotels, cafes, and shops are already preparing for what’s set to be one of the busiest weekends of the year. Families can also look forward to free community zones, heritage displays, and interactive exhibits celebrating the city’s proud automotive legacy.

As anticipation builds, the Geelong Revival Motoring Show continues to reinforce Geelong’s reputation as Australia’s home of historic motorsport. With its unique mix of nostalgia, innovation, and community spirit, this year’s event is set to capture hearts and ignite engines once again.

VCE 2025 Supporting the Next Generation of Achievers

Thousands of Victorian students are sitting their final exams as the 2025 Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) continues across the state, running from October 28 to November 19. For many, this period marks not just the end of their school years, but the beginning of new and exciting opportunities ahead.

The VCE remains one of Victoria’s most significant academic achievements, undertaken by nearly 50,000 students each year. Whether their next step is university, TAFE, an apprenticeship, or entering the workforce, the VCE serves as a critical stepping stone into adult life.

A Defining Stage in Every Student’s Journey

Typically spanning Years 11 and 12, the VCE allows students to choose from a wide range of subjects — from English, mathematics, and sciences to business management, media, languages, and the arts. This flexibility helps each student explore their interests while developing valuable academic and life skills.

In 2025, the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) continues to refine the VCE to reflect a rapidly changing world. The emphasis now extends beyond exam results, with a focus on creativity, collaboration, and

resilience — qualities that prepare students for success well beyond the classroom.

Pathways for Every Ambition

While many aim for a strong Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), the VCE offers more than one route to success. The VCE Vocational Major (VM) provides an alternative pathway that blends academic learning with practical, hands-on experience.

Through the VM, students gain employability skills, explore career interests, and build confidence in real-world settings. Whether they plan to pursue higher education, a trade, or direct employment, the VCE empowers them to follow their own paths.

The Power of Support

Balancing studies, part-time work, and personal commitments can be demanding, and the support of families and communities is crucial. Parents play a key role by offering encouragement, open communication, and reminders about self-care and balance.

Schools are equally committed to student wellbeing, offering counselling, mindfulness programs, and peer support initiatives. Across Victoria, teachers, mentors, and community groups continue

to provide guidance, tutoring, and safe study spaces — ensuring students know they’re not alone in this defining chapter.

Looking Ahead with Confidence

This year’s VCE students have grown up in a fast-paced world shaped by technology, innovation, and social change. Their adaptability, determination, and optimism highlight the strength of a new generation ready to make a difference.

Across schools, there’s a renewed sense of purpose — students are not only focused on academic success but also on contributing to their communities through leadership, sustainability, volunteering, and creative projects.

As the class of 2025 approaches the final stretch, communities across Victoria are preparing to celebrate their achievements. Graduation ceremonies, school assemblies, and local features will soon honour their hard work and resilience.

While ATAR scores attract headlines, they tell only part of the story. The true measure of success lies in the effort, perseverance, and growth each student shows along the way. Together, Victoria celebrates a generation of achievers — confident, compassionate, and ready to take on the future.

SMSFs in Australia: Busting the Most Common Myths

Self-Managed Super Funds (SMSFs) continue to attract Australians who want more control over how their retirement savings are invested. Yet, despite their growing popularity, there are still plenty of myths and misunderstandings about how SMSFs really work.

Before deciding if an SMSF is right for you, it’s worth clearing up a few of the most common misconceptions.

Myth 1: You need a very large balance to start an SMSF.

You don’t need to be a millionaire to set up your own SMSF fund. While an SMSF tends to make more sense for those with larger balances — generally between $300,000 - $500,000 makes more sense it’s important to understand whether the control and investment flexibility justify the additional cost and responsibility. For some people, especially couples combining super, an SMSF can be costeffective option.

Running your own super fund is a serious responsibility. Trustees are personally accountable for all decisions, reporting and compliance. The ATO keeps a close eye on SMSFs to ensure rules are being followed. With the right advice and support, the administrative side can be managed efficiently, but it’s not something to take lightly, talking to professional like financial planners and accountants can help you understand all the requirements.

Myth 3: You can invest in whatever you like.

SMSFs do offer flexibility of investments, from direct shares, exchange traded funds and property to term deposits and managed funds. Be aware there are strict rules around what’s allowed. Every investment must satisfy the “sole purpose test”, meaning it must genuinely be for providing retirement benefits. Buying assets for personal use or helping out family members is a definite no-go in the ATO’s eyes.

An SMSF can be a powerful structure for Australians who value control and are engaged with their finances, but it’s not suitable for everyone. Understanding the realities is the best way to decide if managing your own super is the right fit for you.

Keep It Clean: Why You Must Separate Personal and Business Expenses

BOOKKEEPING

Let’s be honest — when you’re running a business, especially if you’re a oneperson show, it’s really easy for your personal and business expenses to get tangled up. You grab some printer ink at the store, toss in a few household items, and put it all on your business card because it’s what you’ve got handy.

It doesn’t feel like a big deal in the moment — but trust me, as a bookkeeper, I can tell you this: mixing personal and business spending can cause some serious headaches later on. Keeping them separate isn’t just about being organised (though that’s a big part of it). It actually protects your business, makes tax time a million times easier, and saves you money and stress in the long run.

Here’s why it matters — and how to make it simple.

1. It Keeps Your Books Clean (and Saves You Time)

When your personal and business spending are mixed together, it becomes a nightmare to figure out what’s what. You’ll end up digging through old receipts trying to remember if that Amazon order was for your business or your dog’s new leash.

Clean, separate accounts mean clean records — which makes it so much easier to see how your business is actually doing. You’ll know exactly what’s coming in, what’s going out, and where your money’s going. Plus, if you work with a bookkeeper or accountant, you’ll spend less time (and money) having them sort through messy statements.

With only the expenses that actually belong to the business, you’ll also know where you need to cut back if you find yourself overspending, or when your profit is increasing and you can comfortably expand your business, perhaps go from Sole Trader to Company and take on an employee.

2. Tax Time Will Be a Breeze

If you’ve ever sat down at tax time and realised you can’t tell which expenses are business-related, you know how stressful that feels. Mixing personal expenses into your business account makes it easy to accidentally claim something you shouldn’t — and that’s not a position you want to be in if the ATO ever takes a closer look.

When your business account is used only for business, your tax deductions are crystal clear. You’ll have accurate records ready to go, and your accountant will love you for it. In an audit, you’ll need to justify every business deduction. If your records are mixed, proving what’s business and what’s personal becomes nearly impossible. Keeping your finances separate not only helps you maximise legitimate deductions, but also protects you from penalties, interest, and the stress of an audit gone wrong.

3. It Protects You Legally

If you have an LLC or corporation, one of the main reasons you set it up was probably to protect your personal assets. But here’s the catch: if you mix personal and business funds, that legal protection can disappear. Lawyers call it “piercing the corporate veil” — which basically means your personal assets could be on the line if something goes wrong.

Keeping your finances separate shows that your business is a legitimate, independent entity. It’s a small habit that can save you from big problems later.

4. You’ll Look (and Feel) More Professional

Having a dedicated business bank account makes you look more puttogether — to clients, vendors, and lenders. If someone writes you a check to your business name, you can deposit it right into your business account, not your personal one. And if you ever apply for a loan or line of credit, clean business records will help you get approved faster.

It’s not just about appearances, either. There’s something about treating your business finances separately that makes you feel more like a real CEO — even if you’re a team of one.

5. How to Keep It Simple

Here are a few quick tips to make the process easy:

• Open a business bank account just for your business income and expenses.

• Get a business credit card for workrelated purchases only.

• Pay yourself properly — transfer money from your business account to your personal account instead of spending directly. One larger transfer each month is better and easier to track than lots of little transactions. Or better yet, set up Payroll and pay yourself a regular wage. Speak to your Bookkeeper about setting this up correctly and what it means for your business.

• Track your expenses with bookkeeping software (Xero is super easy to use with most of the work done for you. And the monthly subscription is tax deductible)

• Check in monthly to make sure everything’s categorised correctly.

Keeping your personal and business finances separate might take a little extra effort at first, but it’s one of the best habits you can build as a business owner. It saves you time, reduces stress, and gives you a clear picture of how your business is really performing.

And the best part? It saves you time, money, and stress — and gives you the clarity you need to make confident, informed decisions about your business.

Clean books are powerful. When your finances are organised, your business runs smoother, and your peace of mind grows right along with your profits.

Why Leading Feels Harder Than It Should

LEADERSHIP

Lead with Clarity, Not Chaos

(Why strong leadership starts with what’s beneath the surface)

I’ve spent the past couple of months running Lunch & Learn sessions with local leaders - business owners, managers, not-for-profits - and no matter what type of organisation they’re in, the same challenge keeps coming up.

Everyone’s busy. Everyone’s trying hard. But even with good people, good plans, and good intentions… things still feel harder than they should.

You know that feeling? You’ve mapped out the plan, explained the vision, done the meetings - yet it still feels like you’re repeating yourself, or that everything slows down the moment you step away.

That’s not a “you” problem. It’s not a “them” problem either. It’s a design problem.

Most leaders (especially those with big hearts and high standards) get stuck leading through effort instead of design. They’re reacting, managing, following up, fixing things, and putting out fires. And it’s exhausting.

But here’s the truth: when you design your leadership differently, everything changes.

In my sessions, we explore something called the  Critical Alignment Model, developed by my first mentor, Sharon Pearson. This model is a simple but powerful way to bring your vision to life by focusing on four key layers; the Environment, the Structure, the Implementation, and the People

And before your eyes glaze over, stay with me (because this model isn’t corporate theory!).It’s practical. It’s real. And it works whether you’re running a team of 50, a family-run business, or a community group trying to get traction.

It starts with the  Environment - the feel of the place. That’s the energy people walk into, the unspoken rules, the standards, and the vibe. When the environment’s clear and intentional, you don’t have to keep chasing people or micromanaging. The space itself does the heavy lifting - it tells everyone, “this is how we do things here.”

Next comes Structure - your invisible engine. The systems, checklists, and boundaries that keep things moving without constant supervision. Good structure gives people certainty. It makes it easier to stay focused, creative, and consistent - not burned out or confused.

Once those two are right, we move into Implementation - the daily actions and decisions that turn plans into progress. This is where strategy meets reality. You start to see people making better decisions because they finally know what “good” looks like.

And finally, we look at People - because that’s where the magic happens. When the foundation is strong, people thrive. They take ownership, they step up, and they find pride in what they do. You can’t build that through motivation talks - you build it through clarity and alignment.

So, if things feel stuck or you’re constantly chasing progress, here’s my challenge to you... don’t start with the people or the todo list. Start with what’s underneath

Ask yourself:

• What do we stand for here?

• What energy do people feel when they walk in?

• Are our systems built to support what we say we value?

• Where have our standards quietly slipped?

Small shifts in these areas often create the biggest change.

And that’s what this model does, it gives you a way to see what’s really going on beneath the surface, so you can lead with clarity instead of chaos.

Because great leadership isn’t about doing more. It’s about designing the space where people can do their best work.

If you’d like to experience this process for yourself, I’ll be running a Lunch & Learn on this topic again soon. You’ll learn how to use this framework in your business, community group, or team, and walk away with practical steps you can use straight away.

If you’d like to stay in the loop to find out when this session -and other topics- are coming up, let’s stay in touch! You can join my email community here. It’s an easy way to keep growing your leadershipone real, practical insight at a time.

THE R WORDS: relationships, rapport, retention

ACCOUNTANT

Your business grows by attracting new clients. However, retaining existing customers may cost less and yield greater returns. The [Harvard Business Review] (https://hbr.org/2014/10/thevalue-of-keeping-the-right-customers) found that acquiring a new customer may cost five to 25 times more than keeping an existing customer, and that increased customer retention can enhance profitability.

Develop a robust retention strategy with strong client relationships:

- Identify common ground

- Ask questions, listen and build rapport

- Make clients feel welcome

- Establish trust, under-promise and over-deliver

Train your team so that customer care is consistently excellent.

It’s easier to build trust when you’re face to face. Online touchpoints need to be consistent too. Consider ease of use, responsiveness and follow up. Is the path from automated contact to personalised contact and service delivery seamless from the customer’s point of view? Dig into users’ experience to see how they perceive interactions with your business.

Back up service delivery with:

- Social media presence, putting a face to your business

- Email personalisation

- Rapid response. Show clients you respect their time because it – like yours is valuable

- Data analysis. Different demographics may have different preferences for how they connect with your business. Some are comfortable with chatbot interactions while others may be turned off, valuing personal contact they perceive as authentic.

All this helps your business stand out, so people remember you and tell their friends and colleagues. Great client relationships help your business attract new clients as well as repeat business.

The three Rs are key to long-term success.

Cyber Security for your small business in the present

Content

You wake up in the morning, check your phone, and see notifications that your online payments have been received through the night, you’ve got notifications from all the different cloud services you use. Everything just works… Right?

In 2023, it is common for a business to use many different cloud services, even for hands-on businesses like electricians, at a minimum you’ll have your bank account, email, website, invoicing, payroll, payment system and that’s as a starting point. Businesses without basic security measures are vulnerable to cyber security attacks, and in 20212022 the average cost per cybercrime reported was $39,000 for small businesses.

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month, and it’s good to have a check to see where you and your business stand.

These steps, while simple, are costeffective and can help protect you and your business.

Automatic Updates

Updates to your devices and software often contain new features or change the functionality of the application you use, but one of the most important aspects of updates is the security updates. These security updates allow the latest bugs to be remedied on devices, whether it be your laptop or your phone and remove the vulnerability.

Patching these security vulnerabilities is made easy with Automatic Updates. Ensuring your device is set to update automatically means you won’t have to even think about updating.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Passwords are vulnerable to compromise, and Multi-Factor Authentication gives you an extra layer of security. MFA will require a combination of multiple pieces of information only you know, such as a password, rolling number (authenticator app, RSA token), physical device or even a biometric reading.

Securing your accounts with an MFA is a must-do in our connected life, some examples of high-quality MFAs are.

• YubiKey (https://www.yubico.com)

• Microsoft Authenticator (https:// www.microsoft.com/en-au/security/ mobile-authenticator-app)

• Google Authenticator (https:// support.google.com/accounts/ answer/1066447)

• Duo (https://duo.com)

How to check if my login information has been compromised

A great online tool run by Australian Troy Hunt is the website Have I Been Pwned. This allows you to check if your email and password have been compromised by any large data breaches. No organisation is immune to data breaches with these well-known Australian businesses hit; Optus, Medibank, Latitude Financial, and Pizza Hut, to just name a few recent.

Endpoint Protection

Anti-virus, EDR, XDR, MDR. While there are many names for endpoint protection, and it is an important element in protecting your devices with market leaders offering ransomware protection (rollback) and other advanced features. Protect your business by protecting your devices.

TARGETED IT SOLUTIONS FOR SMALL BUSINESS

6 paint touch-up jobs for summer

Christmas will soon be upon us and who wants to spend valuable holiday time with household chores? November is a great time to refresh your home. With the weather getting warmer, you can spruce up your home for outdoor entertaining or resale with a few quick and easy paint jobs over the following weekends.

1. Engaging entryway

If you have a timber front door, give it a refresh with a new coat or go wild with a completely new look. Red, cobalt blue and emerald green tones make definite statements and are colours that invite guests inside. Don’t forget the doorframes. These need a coat of paint for protection as well as aesthetics.

With primer, paint, brushes and sandpaper, you could have this done and dried in a few hours.

2. Good-looking garage door

If your garage door faces the street, it accounts for a large area of the appearance of your home. Does it look clean or a bit rundown? Both timber and metal garage doors can benefit from a lick of paint. Elegant and minimal or bold and beautiful, a new coat of paint on the door will add to the street appeal of your home.

3. Gorgeous garden

How many timber and metal surfaces do you see around your garden? A splash of colour is a great way to keep your garden bright and colourful in the months where plants aren’t flowering or the weather is overcast.

Planter boxes, fences, retaining walls and wall hangings are available for your creative flair. Imagine how a splash of yellow or orange could brighten up a dark corner or a dull brick wall. The vegetables may look boring but the box they’re planted in could make this the most attractive part of the garden if it were painted in festive green or red.

This is a fun project that can be done in stages anytime, each part taking no more than half-an-hour.

4. Desirable decking

Oiling your decking is something that should be done at least once a year to protect the timber from rain and consequent water rot. If your decking is painted, the paint will have started to shred after a year so painting it annually is also a must.

Choose a dry day with no wind. Cover and tape down surrounding surfaces like paths and walls with plastic sheeting.

Sweep and soap the deck surfaces. Pour the oil or paint into a tray and spread evenly across the decks with a roller. If painting, choose a brand that is suitable for high traffic areas and outdoors. Make sure you oil and paint in a direction that leaves you room to get indoors without stepping on the wet surface.

5. Wonderful windows

For beauty and protection, exterior window frames need painting at least once every seven years. But the windows can be thought of as the eyes of a house Repainting your window frames can give the appearance of your home a lift, along with other window features such as shutters. Try matching the colour of your doorframes and garage door, or a

contrasting shade that will give a subtle distinction to your home. Choosing to paint everything in the same tones can also produce a great effect.

6. Fabulous outdoor furniture

Oil and paint your outdoor timber furniture for the same reasons as you do your decking. However, with garden furniture you can have much more fun with colours. Benches can be decorated in one colour, striped, with motifs. Let your imagination run wild or paint it in greens and browns to blend in with the surround foliage.

Put each item of furniture on a sheet outside, sand back, paint with primer and off you go. This is an activity which your kids can do with your guidance, lightening your workload, teaching them a new skill and at the same time giving them something fun and practical to do.

These six small jobs can make a difference to your home and lift your spirits.

Painting your home’s exterior is a significant undertaking, but the benefits—a refreshed look, enhanced protection, and increased home value—are well worth the effort, ensuring your home remains a source of pride for years to come.

VITAMIN D The nutrient your body makes in the sun

NATUROPATHY

It’s probably the first time in history, other than perhaps for people who worked in the mines, when people work, travel, and spend leisure time without any exposure to the sun. In the past, even those who worked indoors would often walk to work, and most people would have a veggie garden that they spent time working in. In this current era when we have awareness of skin cancer, it seems we might have gone a bit too far.

The main role of Vitamin D is to put calcium into bones. It does this by promoting the absorption of calcium, then helping to regulate calcium levels in the blood. It also works to repair and remodel bones, by stimulating the absorption and growth of new bone tissue.

Additionally, vitamin D plays a role in muscle function. If you find yourself with a cramp that lasts for more than a few minutes, it’s likely a calcium deficiency in that muscle. Vitamin D is required for the nervous system, the immune system, aids in blood pressure regulation, and has a role in glucose metabolism. So, as you can

see, it’s definitely not a nutrient that should be forgotten.

As we get into the warmer weather, it’s a great time to think about how you can absorb more vitamin D. Most people can spend 10-15 minutes in the sun without burning, and some people can be out for longer. Find your sweet spot - the point before you burn and spend time in the sun with your arms and legs exposed. A great way to do this is to go for a walk or do other exercise at the same time, achieving two health outcomes at once.

Whilst sunscreen is great to prevent getting burnt, many of the ingredients are toxic. I cannot understand why nearly every brand of foundation make-up contains sunscreen, when most women wear makeup indoors. If you are out in the sun for an extended time, consider natural barriers such as a wide brimmed hat, long sleeves, or resting in the shade. On top of that, there are a wide range of natural sunscreens available, and a cream that contains zinc is a great place to start.

Due to Melbourne’s distance from the equator, we can’t absorb vitamin D all year, so make it a priority when the sun is high in the sky over the next few months. You can do this by incorporating time outside in the sunshine in your weekly routine. This way your body will thank you both now, due to the many roles vitamin D plays, and for when you get older, with strong bones that are less likely to break and fracture.

Thank you for building a better future for Greater Geelong

The 2025 Victorian Senior of the Year Awards have recognised 17 exceptional older Victorians at Government House, including two Geelong locals.

Steve Bentley from Newtown and Rippleside’s Geoffrey Mann were proud recipients of Council on the Ageing (COTA) Victoria Senior Achiever Awards.

Minister for Ageing, Ingrid Stitt MP and Robert Caulfield, President of COTA Victoria and Seniors Rights Victoria were joined by the Governor of Victoria, Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC to present the awards.

Steve Bentley

Steve joined the City-led L2P program in 2022 and is known as a patient and caring driver mentor who supports young learner drivers as they get experience behind the wheel, gain confidence and learn life changing skills. The 65-year-old also spends 1-2 days a week at a school-based L2P pilot program to support students from refugee backgrounds. Additionally, Steve is a member of the L2P Advisory Group, offering invaluable input into mentor recruitment, program promotion and operational improvements.

Steve has a long-standing commitment to our community. He was the Geelong YMCA President for eight years and now volunteers at the Geelong Animal Welfare Society and as vice president of the Stair Climbing Australia Committee.

Steve is committed to helping people live their best lives in their later years and starting important conversations about men’s health and wellbeing. Steve’s selfless service is having a lasting impact on Greater Geelong.

Geoffrey Mann

Geoff spends his time volunteering across three organisations each week, bringing warmth, humility and care to each. He leads by example and inspires people of all ages to value and celebrate the journey of getting older.

The 79-year-old spends two days a week at Geelong FoodShare in the commercial kitchen, cooking around 200 meals for people in need.

As a valued Rotary member for 25+ years, Geoff drives new programs to help communities locally and overseas. Over two days, he collects medical resources for communities in Sri Lanka and Papua New Guinea through an aid and equipment program.

Once a week, Geoff drives for the volunteer patient transport program at Barwon Health, ensuring community members can get to and from medical appointments. In 2024, he completed more than 3,200 trips.

“On behalf of Council and the community, we thank you Steve and Geoffrey for their selfless service to those who need it most.

They should feel incredibly proud about their achievements and the example they are setting for not just seniors, but people of all ages.

It’s people like Geoffrey and Steve who are making the Geelong region more inclusive, healthy and vibrant, by fostering connection, championing wellbeing and creating opportunities for everyone to thrive.”

City in bloom: annual report plants seeds of success for Greater Geelong

A year of change, growth and strength is highlighted in the City of Greater Geelong’s Annual Report 2024-25, which was noted at the October council meeting on Tuesday.

The report showcases how a new council, new infrastructure and new initiatives have shaped one of the fastest-growing regions in Australia.

There was also growth of a different kind.

One of the year’s most memorable moments was the rare blooming of the corpse plant, Amorphophallus titanum, at the Geelong Botanic Gardens in November 2024.

More than 20,000 people queued to see – and smell – the rare phenomenon, as captured on the cover of this year’s report.

The once-in-a-decade event also attracted 67,000 webpage visits and more than 350,000 live stream views from across the country and overseas.

The surge of interest boosted the total number of visitors to the gardens from 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2025 to 126,000 – a 55 per cent increase on the previous year.

It was a big year for our parks and natural assets, with the City of Greater Geelong named a Tree City of the World once again and more than 2,500 trees and 3,500 tube stock planted across the municipality.

Beyond the blooms, the report demonstrates a clear commitment to community services and infrastructure, health and wellbeing, advocacy and financial responsibility. By the numbers, we:

• DELIVERED 31 core services and more than 100 sub-services, including 34,230 hard waste collections, 55.7 kilometres roads resurfaced, and 10,999 children seen by the Maternal and Child Health service.

• INVESTED $139.3 million in capital works projects, including roads, buildings, open spaces and community facilities, including Biyal-a Armstrong Creek Library, Lara Recreation Reserve, Landy Field, and The Nest Youth Hub.

• STRENGTHENED our engagement approach face-to-face and online to involve more than 9,249 community members in 58 projects, with the 2025 Youth Survey receiving 3,790 responses.

• AWARDED 261 community grants worth $4.3 million.

• SECURED $20.45 million in government funding for local Priority Projects, plus a further $68.2 million for the duplication of Barwon Heads Road.

• RECORDED a surplus of $118.9 million and total revenue of $629.8 million, while net assets rose to $5.3 billion.

Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

“Supporting one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions brings both opportunity and expectation. I thank councillors past and present who contributed to a year of transformation while maintaining that steadfast focus on our residents. This report reflects a council committed to sustainable growth, responsible financial management and creating a thriving, resilient community.”

City of Greater Geelong CEO Ali Wastie

“We’ve continued to invest in the services, infrastructure and facilities that make a difference every day, while managing the pressures of rate caps, inflation and rising construction costs. This report shows the scale of our work, the diversity of our community, and the many ways we’re responding to local needs. There’s a lot to be proud of, and even more to look forward to.”

The Annual Report 2024-25 closes the chapter on Our Community Plan 202125 and we now look to the new Council Plan 2025-29, which sets our strategic direction for the next four years and carries forward the community’s 30-year Clever and Creative vision.

A new future for iconic Osborne House

The City of Greater Geelong has selected Gurner Montgomery to lead the redevelopment of Osborne House, the historic site located at 51 Swinburne Street, North Geelong.

Following an Expression of Interest (EOI) process, Gurner Montgomery was chosen to transform Osborne House, its stables, and the adjacent development site into a new cultural and commercial destination.

The redevelopment will include a heritage hotel, wellness spa, restaurant, lounge bar, event and conference spaces, and eco villas – collectively known as ‘The Osborne’ – with sweeping views of Corio Bay.

The City is committed to ensuring Osborne House is sustainably redeveloped and maintained as a protected heritage site. The project will follow the guidelines of the Conservation Management Plan, with the City contributing $8 million for heritage restoration works.

Major & Special Projects portfolio chair Councillor

“This is an exciting step forward for one of Greater Geelong’s most treasured, although sometimes forgotten, heritage sites and icons.

The reimagined Osborne will celebrate our city’s rich colonial history while creating new opportunities for jobs, accommodation, wellness and hospitality experiences.”

Arts & Culture, Hospitality & Live Entertainment portfolio chair Councillor Eddy Kontelj

“Getting to this point has taken many years of work, effort and collaboration with many stakeholders, particularly the community. We certainly thank the Osborne Park Association Inc for their unwavering dedication, passion and input over many years.

With its spectacular vista over Corio Bay, this redevelopment will breathe new life into Osborne House, maintaining its historic charm and adding modern uses that benefit the whole community, and something we can all be extremely proud of.

It’s a great example of how we can partner with private industry to creatively reimagine heritage assets to support our region’s growth.”

Gurner Montgomery is a partnership between Melbourne-based luxury developer Gurner Group and Geelong property identity Dean Montgomery. Gurner Group is renowned for delivering high-end residential, hospitality, and mixed-use precincts.

Their current Geelong projects include the transformation of Cunningham Pier and the Brougham Street Woolstore.

Iconic Osborne House in North Geelong will be redeveloped into a new cultural and commercial destination.

Official opening of inclusive playground

Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles joined the official opening of the Rippleside Inclusive Playspace, a Livvi’s Place on Friday, marking another milestone for the flagship playground.

The playspace is the first of its kind in Geelong, and was built in partnership with the Touched By Olivia Foundation, Australian Government, City of Greater Geelong, Victorian Government, and Quintessential.

Replacing the original playground, which opened in 2001, this newly developed area reimagines what a public play space can be, offering not just fun, but a sense of connection and belonging.

At the heart of the playspace is a striking steel play structure filled with adventure – a bridge to cross, slides to race down and climbing features that challenge and delight.

Surrounding it are areas designed to stimulate the senses and encourage imaginative exploration, from naturebased zones and sand pits to water play features, an in-ground trampoline and a sensory wall.

The space also includes a diverse range of swings and a flying fox, making it accessible and enjoyable for children of varying physical abilities.

And the space has been thoughtfully designed for families too. Shaded picnic areas, BBQ facilities and gathering spots make it a welcoming community hub for socialising, celebrating or simply relaxing.

The playspace sits adjacent to upgraded amenities, including a fully accessible Changing Places facility— ensuring everyone, regardless of mobility, can enjoy extended visits with comfort and dignity.

This project has been made possible through an impressive collaboration between government bodies, local council, private donors, and community advocates.

It was supported by $2.18 million from the Australian Government, as part of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, $1.7 million from the City of Greater Geelong, $910,000 from the Victorian Government with $800,000 from the 2020-21 Local Sports Infrastructure Fund and $110,000 for Changing Places through the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, and $235,000 from Touched by Olivia, private equity via Quintessential.

Acting Prime Minister and Member for Corio, Richard Marles MP:

“Rippleside Park holds many special memories for families here in Geelong and all across the region. Now, the new Rippleside Inclusive Playspace – the first of its kind in Geelong – will give even more children and their families the opportunity to make those memories.

The Albanese Labor Government is proud to have supported in this wonderful project. I hope it brings many years of joy to our community.”

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM:

“Since opening to the public in August, the Rippleside Inclusive Playspace, a Livvi’s Place, has become a popular location for children all ages and abilities.

I’m thrilled to see so many local children and families in enjoying playing together here.

This playspace is the result of significant work and support from the City of Greater Geelong, the Victorian and Commonwealth governments and several other dedicated individuals and organisations.”

State Member for Lara Ella George MP:

“The new Rippleside Park Inclusive Playspace comes with a wide range of fun and accessible equipment, providing great quality outdoor facilities for people of all ages and all abilities to enjoy.

I know that local families are going to love spending time at the Rippleside Playspace, where there is something for every child to enjoy.”

Kim Becherand, Head of Inclusive Play at Touched by Olivia:

“This Livvi’s Place is a new jewel in our national network of sought-after and trusted inclusive playpaces.

It reflects deep engagement from local children and families who experience barriers to play, schools and members of the wider community. They all requested somewhere where locals and visitors could gather, recreate, celebrate Geelong and play together whilst maintaining the feeling of the already known and much loved playspace on the hill and nestled amongst the trees of Rippleside Park.

Jeavons Landscape Architects took on the challenge with gusto, and the painstakingly detailed, thoughtful and clever design provides play opportunities for all to enjoy, Read more

New measures to transform safety at Eastern Beach

Changes are on the way for the heritage-listed Eastern Beach precinct to make the area safer for locals and visitors.

This cherished destination along the north-facing Corio Bay welcomes more than 250,000 visitors each summer.

Between 2004 and 2024, there were 50 drowning fatalities in our municipality, representing more than triple the average of Victorian local government areas. The Eastern Beach precinct is identified as a high-risk area and ‘drowning blackspot’ by Life Saving Victoria (LSV).

The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) is land manager of the site and requested the City, as operator, to investigate short- and long-term actions to improve safety.

Our safety and management review, based on a methodical and evidence-based assessment of the precinct, makes a number of recommendations including:

• Continue lifeguard supervision of the children’s pool and promenade from November to mid-April.

• Re-open the children’s pool unsupervised from mid-April to October and overnight, with additional safety measures available such as an automatic external defibrillator, extra signage, more rescue equipment and an emergency marker. This will see the children’s pool return to being open yearround.

• Continue the use of the rolling drum diving apparatuses as they’re assessed as safe and suitable for ongoing use.

• Strengthen the structure of the central pontoon and undertake safety works to the viewing platform and decking.

• Undertake safety works on the diving tower with consideration to the roof structure, handrails and structure integrity.

• Permanently decommission all four diving boards (including the two that were decommissioned for the 2024-25 season) due to ongoing safety risks and unsafe swimmer behaviours.

• Updated lifeguard supervision hours to:

• 12pm - 5pm on weekends only between 1 November 2025 to 21 December 2025

• 10am - 5pm (pool) and 11am - 7pm (dive tower) every day between 21 December 2025 to 28 February 2026

• 12pm - 5pm weekends only between 1 March 2026 to 30 March 2026

• 12pm - 5pm every day during the Easter school holidays from 5 April 2026 to 19 April 2026

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

“The City is committed to actioning all recommendations.

The recommendations are informed by significant research, including safety and structural integrity reviews, workshops with LSV and Royal Life Saving Australia, a report on the precinct’s drowning profile and feedback from ‘Community Conversation’ sessions with an early morning swimming group.

We know that there will be community members who have enjoyed using the diving boards over the years and will be disappointed by their permanent closure.

We recognise and understand their frustration; however, we won’t waver on protecting the community.

These incoming changes and investigations will ensure that the Eastern Beach precinct is a safer place for swimmers of all skill levels.”

Councillor Eddy Kontelj

“The external reclassification of the children’s pool from ‘open waterway’ to ‘pool’ and additional safety requirements meant the City had to close the pool when it was unsupervised late last year.

We thank the community and stakeholders for sharing their feedback and patience as we worked to ensure our youngest community members were protected when using the children’s pool.

Now that we have more safety measures being implemented for the upcoming summer season, we’re excited to re-open the children’s pool year-round.

I am positive the community will be thrilled with this, including quite a number of local athletes and sports clubs who reached out to us advising that they use the pool regularly for rehabilitation purposes.”

More Than Beautiful Spaces. ICM Geelong’s Decade of Community, Craft, and Connection.

In an industry where precision, skill, and creativity meet, Independent Cabinet Makers Geelong (ICM Geelong Inc.) has spent the past decade not only celebrating the creation of exceptional cabinetry but also building something much bigger, a community.

Founded ten years ago, ICM Geelong began as a small collective of passionate local cabinet makers determined to showcase the exceptional talent within the region and highlight that their craft is bespoke and extends far beyond kitchens and bathrooms. From custom cabinetry to commercial fit-outs and architectural joinery, its members bring ideas to life with skill and pride.

What began as a grassroots effort to support local makers has since grown into a strong, collaborative network that celebrates quality, creativity, and community. Today, ICM Geelong is proudly run by a dedicated volunteer committee, led by President Gary Paech, who continues to champion the industry and its people.

Among the group’s proudest achievements is the Bowder House Community Project, a collaboration that perfectly reflects ICM Geelong’s spirit of giving back. Bowder House, a transitional home for war veterans, provides a safe and supportive environment for those rebuilding their lives after service. When ICM Geelong was approached by Iris Cargill of the Vietnam Veterans Federation about the need for a new kitchen at Bowder House, the network of cabinetmakers, suppliers, affiliate trades, and sponsors immediately rallied together. They donated time, materials, and expertise to design, construct, and install a beautiful, functional kitchen that now forms the heart of the Whittington based home.

This project serves as a powerful reminder that when local businesses unite around a shared purpose, they can create lasting impact.

Bowder House kitchen

The sense of community within ICM Geelong itself runs just as deep. The organisation provides a vital network for cabinet makers, apprentices, and more recently designers across the region. It offers a space to connect, collaborate, and share experiences while providing support and

opportunities for professional growth. Members regularly share workloads during busy periods, exchange advice, and celebrate one another’s successes, creating a culture of camaraderie and shared purpose.

The inclusion of interior designers in the ICM Geelong network has been another exciting step forward. Recognising that great design and craftsmanship go hand in hand, this initiative has strengthened collaboration between cabinet makers and designers, enriching the local design and manufacturing community. Designers are often small business owners working independently, and ICM Geelong provides them with a platform for connection, referrals, and creative partnerships that benefit the wider industry.

Beyond networking, ICM Geelong also prioritises education and professional development. Recent initiatives have included training sessions on productivity, employer obligations, and an all-important mental health workshop with Shake Consulting, supporting apprentices and cabinet makers of all ages. Regular supplier trade nights also help keep members up to date with the latest products and innovations.

One of the highlights of the ICM calendar is the ICM Geelong Cabinetry Awards, hosted annually by e&s Geelong. The awards celebrate the best in local design and craftsmanship across categories such as Best Kitchen (over and under $50k), Best Bathroom, and Best House Lot. The event not only showcases the outstanding talent within the region but also inspires the next generation of makers and designers to pursue rewarding careers in the trade.

A long term focus for ICM Geelong has been nurturing future talent. Through partnerships with The Gordon and local secondary schools, the organisation raises awareness of cabinetmaking as a career pathway, introducing students to the creativity and satisfaction that comes from working with their hands. Members also offer mentoring and trial opportunities to help young people experience what a career in the trade looks like firsthand.

ICM Geelong’s success and its ability to give back would not be possible without the support of its sponsors. From suppliers and manufacturers to local industry partners, these sponsors play an essential role in enabling events, training, and community projects like Bowder House to come to life.

As ICM Geelong celebrates its 10th anniversary, it continues to prove that when local talent comes together with the right support, amazing things can be built - both inside and outside the workshop.

CRIME PREVENTION MONTH 2025

Most crimes aren’t planned. Most locks aren’t used. Start smart habits now.

That was the theme for Crime Prevention Month held during October, a key initiative led by Neighbourhood Watch Victoria to shine a spotlight on the power of local communities in creating safer, more connected neighbourhoods.

Throughout the month here in Greater Geelong and Surf Coast, we have aimed to amplify the message that crime prevention is a shared responsibility, and that even small actions can make a big difference. By working together, raising awareness, and providing practical resources, we can help reduce opportunities for crime and build stronger, more resilient communities.

We thank Bunnings Torquay, Waurn Ponds and Leopold, The Salty Dog at Torquay and Newcombe Street Café, Portarlington for hosting us and our activities during the month.

Crime Prevention Week – October 13 –20 saw us at Bunnings Waurn Ponds for a Tradies BBQ and Coffee with a Cop and Safe Plate event; Bunnings Torquay for Coffee with a Cop and a Tradies BBQ; Bunnings Leopold for a Crime Prevention Pop Up display.

The Salty Dog hosted us for “Paws and Connect” where Torquay Police and Neighbourhood Watch mingled with locals on a beautiful morning in a beautiful location

Newcombe Street Café, Portarlington hosted our Coffee with a Cop – a chance for neighbours to meet their local police.

We were also out and about at: # Ashbury Estate, Armstrong Creek for a Pop UP BBQ for neighbours # Safe Plate at Newcomb Secondary College

And then there was our 7 Day Crime Prevention Challenge for Greater Geelong and then Torquay /Jan Juc

While Crime Prevention Month has come to an end, Neighbourhood Watch will remain active in our region and we look forward to reaching out to more neighbours and looking out for each other. Follow our social media page to be informed about all things crime prevention - https://www.facebook.com/NHWGreaterGeelong/

Remember - Connected communities are safer communities – knowing your neighbours and looking out for one another improves both safety and wellbeing.

How to prevent retail theft and what to do if you witness it

Shoplifting is a major problem for many retail stores. Whether you’re the owner or an employee, always be alert for suspicious customers, keep an eye on your stock and work together to create a safe retail experience for everyone.

Retail theft – or shoplifting - is a major problem for many stores. It can be frustrating and costly.

Don’t worry though. Here are some simple and straightforward tips to help keep staff and customers safe, theft to a minimum and shoplifters at bay.

Provide great customer service

Always greet customers when they enter. A friendly hello or a simple “Can I help you?” or “Are you looking for something in particular?” not only makes a customer’s day but can also deter a shoplifter as they’ll know they’ve been noticed.

Know the signs

Keep an eye out for customers behaving suspiciously – from customers lurking nervously before entering, to those carrying backpacks or large bags, or even those wearing bulky coats in summer. Especially watch out for:

• Hands (yep, they’re the culprits)

• People who loiter in spaces just out of sight

• Nervous customers who won’t make eye contact

• Customers who stay in the store a time, seemingly without a purpose.

Bond with police and security

It’s handy to build a rapport with local police and shopping centre security. They can provide valuable advice and conduct regular patrols. It also helps if they’re familiar with your store’s layout. Always report any thefts or suspicious activity.

What to do if you witness a theft?

Your safety is paramount. Never confront a shoplifter directly. It’s not worth the risk. If you’re sure of the theft:

• Inform your supervisor or manager.

• Identify exactly what was taken and where it was hidden.

• Maintain a line of sight but at a safe distance.

• Take note of their appearance, clothing and any other noticeable features such as beards, tattoos or scars.

• Refrain from touching the suspect.

• Politely inform them that the police or store security have been notified, and request that they hand over the item.

However, if there’s any uncertainty, it’s better to hold back. A wrongful accusation could land you and your store in hot water.

Other handy tips

• Never leave the cash register unattended.

• Limit the amount of cash kept in the till and on site.

• Make sure customers can’t access behind the counter.

• Install sensors to alert staff when customers enter the store.

• Keep staff and stock rooms locked and check them throughout the day.

• Regularly chat with staff about preventing theft and what to do if theft occurs. Provide on-the-job training. The more they know, the better.

Retail theft often goes unreported but every report helps protect your business and community. Here is a guide for you.

Words Matter

Our words have the power to build up or to tear down. To support or hinder. To grow positive and healthy states of mind or negative and disturbed ways of thinking.

When I was fifteen years of age my father told me that he thought I had enough brains to complete Secondary College and go to University. Those positive words stayed with me and ultimately lead me to become a teacher.

Conversely, I still remember the angry and condemning words that I heard as a child, of my neighbours habitually shouting at each other, which led to some very unhappy and troubled individuals.

Children need a steady stream of calm positive words.

When children misbehave it’s important to keep our cool and to speak firmly and kindly. Simply and directly. We need to speak to the behaviour while reassuring children of our love. eg. ‘I love you very much but I don’t like what you did.’

Never underestimate the power of your words whether you’re a father, mother, grandparent, teacher, friend, a significant other or ‘just a neighbour’.

I’ll never forget the testimony of a woman, in a parenting course that I ran, who said she had never doubted herself because of the continuous stream of positive words that had been spoken over her by her dad while she was a child.

Some experts suggest that it takes six positive words to balance out each negative word.

See how many of these you can use in a week:

I love the way you….

I’m really proud of you for…..

I love you.

I loved seeing the thoughtful way you….. You are really good at…..

It was great to see you…..

Looking good!

Thanks so much for….

I love it when you…..

I love your smile.

I loved hearing the kind words you spoke to……

All the best everyone, Kindest Regards, Rob

25 Myers Road, Geelong –Onboarding and Community Building – 117 Apartments

In Geelong, Homes Victoria and the National Affordable Housing Victoria (NAHV) housing services team are preparing to welcome community housing residents into 117 newly completed, 1- and 2-bedroom apartments in the heart of the Geelong CBD. This prime location offers walkable access to a diverse range of community facilities and services.

Over recent months, NAHV has focused on building strong, trust-based and transparent relationships with key local organisations to ensure the right residents are matched to the right homes. The Salvation Army, Sacred Heart Mission, and numerous referral partners have been instrumental in supporting this process. Our ongoing collaboration with Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative is central to improving cultural safety and ensuring a welcoming environment for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents.

NAHV’s Housing Services team is steadily working through a Matching for Success allocations process in close partnership with the community organisations they have connected with, ensuring that new Residents have the support and stability they need from day one.

The Geelong project which is part of the Social Housing Growth Fund - Regional Round, reflects Homes Victoria’s investment and NAHV’s continued commitment to regional housing delivery that not only provides shelter but builds strong, inclusive communities.

LEOPOLD SPORTSMANS CLUB

In 1971 a couple of locals, Len Lewis and Kevin Ash had an idea for a bowls club in Leopold. The idea took hold, a committee formed and money raised. A location was needed that would have enough space for two bowling greens and a clubhouse. Finally this was located in Kensington Road, our current location and 5 acres purchased for $8500.

In May 1975 the club was officially opened as a family friendly sporting club by Brian Dixon, the then Minister for Youth, Sport and Recreation.

You can see the results for yourself on visiting our club.

There are so many people to thank over many years for their support, encouragement and voluntary help along with the the original crew that helped established the club.

Leopold Sporties, located in Leopold, Victoria, is a club based on sports. We offer Bowls, both social and Pennant, Golf, Racquet Ball and Squash.

Volunteering is lots of fun

Anyone looking for a fun and friendly environment to volunteer in might find something to suit them at the Corio Little Athletics Centre. Volunteers quickly make new friends and enjoy the thrill of watching the young athletes competing. Bring your existing skills, or learn new ones. You can even help in different roles each week. Little athletics offers a wide variety of volunteering opportunities and volunteers are welcome to attend regularly, or occasionally.

All help is gratefully received and volunteer roles include;

• Event Officials – oversee the field events, race starters, etc

• Event Marshals – organise the athletes for their races

• Event general helpers – rake sand, replace the high jump bar etc.

• Time keeping

• Set up and pack up equipment

• Announcing

• Coaching

• First Aid – qualifications required

Some roles require a Working with Children Check.

• BBQ

• Canteen and coffee making

• Photography

• Administration

• Technology

• Equipment maintenance

• Setting cross country courses in winter

• and more

Around 50 volunteers are needed each competition day, as well as in roles behind the scenes during the week.

Many volunteers are current family members, however the volunteering team at Corio Little Athletics also consists of past athletes, past parents, Life Members, and valued community members. Come along and find out why so many people “just stay” for many years as they love the little aths environment. Everyone is welcome including people with disabilities.

Past athlete Jess volunteers as a first aider and also judges race walks. It has been several years since Jess finished little athletics, and Jess now volunteers because “I like giving back to the community who supported me.”

Community member Ian first volunteered 2 summers ago, and easily fitted in and made friends. Ian enjoys helping at long jump and high jump and is always keen to be on the BBQ. At the end of his first summer, he realised he would miss his Saturday mornings so he came along to help time keep for cross country during winter where he is a valued helper. Ian volunteers because “I enjoy the company and helping the community.”

Jenni is a shot-put official with a long history at the Corio Centre. An athlete herself, her children were then athletes and she now has two grandsons competing. Jenni follows in the footsteps of her late mother Barb, who was an active Centre volunteer for over 50years and volunteers “To give back to this wonderful Centre that myself, children now grandchildren are a part of.”

The canteen is a busy hive of activity both on Centre competition days and also for school athletics events through winter. One of the regulars helping there is Andrew, whose children finished little aths several years ago. Andrew volunteers because “Both my girls went through little athletics so I’m giving back to the Centre.”

Community members keen to explore volunteering at Corio Little Athletics are encouraged to contact the Centre on 0422 047928 or email corio@lavic.com.au

Market Square was a town square located in the centre of Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Consisting of eight acres (2.9 hectares) of land, the area was reserved by Governor Sir George Gipps as a town square during the initial surveying of Geelong. The area later became a produce market, before being progressively built upon. Today the Market Square Shopping Centre occupies the site, having been opened in 1985 by the City of Geelong.

GEtTING TO KNOW GEELONG

WATERFRONT

The Geelong Waterfront is one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts. Having started from humble beginnings when Geelong was founded as a port in 1836, the Waterfront has now attracted a series of prestigious awards.

This cosmopolitan and vibrant area is a hive of activity with restaurants and cafes, beautiful landscaped gardens, attractions and public art, all with amazing views of Corio Bay. It also provides a full events calendar, tourism, education and accommodation services:

Our historic Carousel, Poppy Kettle playground and youth activities area is great for kids of all ages. See Geelong’s famous bollards.

There are plenty of possibilities to explore and view the Waterfront: take a ride on a Harley Davidson motorcycle, ride the trackless train if you prefer a more leisurely look around, check out the view from the air in a helicopter or take a boat cruise along Geelong’s spectacular Waterfront.

A visit to Geelong is not complete if you haven’t seen our spectacular waterfront.

POPPY KETTLE PLAYGROUND

Situated on the Geelong waterfront, this park is jam-packed with awesome play elements, has beautiful sea views, has picnic facilities, and is a short walk away from cafes and other Geelong attractions. It makes for a beautiful day out for all ages, and is certainly a must-do in summer.

The interactive play equipment includes a multi-coloured tubular slide that winds down the hill, a dragon emerging from the ground, a timber tower, a swing, a boat (atop the sand pit), bouncers, and a unique pyramid climbing net.

The playground is also well known for the interactive Poppy Kettle water fountains and miniature statues, situated amongst a rock area, which seem to be the main attraction for little ones. In fact, this feature was inspired by a children’s book written by local author, Robert Ingpen, and gives the park a magical quality. During the summer months the slide area has additional water play features.

A trip to this playground can be combined with a walk or bike ride along Geelong’s famous Bollard walk or a visit to The Carousel. Geelong’s Youth Activity Precinct is located a stones’ throw away from the playground, and features basketball ring, seating areas, open multipurpose area, and skate ramps.

This is one of the most perfectly positioned playgrounds for so many reasons.

SKATE PARK

Skate Parks in Geelong have a variety of facilities available for skate boarders, bladers and BMX bike riders including quarter pipes, handrails, funboxes, vert ramps, pyramids, banked ramps, and stairsets.

We strongly advise the wearing of helmets and padding when using our Skate Parks, and enforce compulsory wearing of helmets at all skate events.

Looking to get into skating or want to know more about skating in Geelong?

Young people interested in joining in activities can call the Skate Program Worker on 03 5272 5272.

We have more skate parks per capital than any other municipality in Australia.

CUNNINGHAM PIER

The Pier Geelong offers uninterrupted bay views stretching from Rippleside to Point Wilson and the Geelong City skyline. It provides a large impressive area catering for small events of up to 800 guests seated or 1000 guests’ cocktail style.

The venue also housed City Quarter Bar a trendly lounge bar on Level 1. With loft ceilings, three decks, comfortable lounges, fireplace, gourmet pizzas and world inspired tapas, CQ is perfect for hosting engagements, birthday parties, hen’s high teas or pre or post event drinks.

Also housed within this iconic building is Wah Wah Gee, a funky Asian-inspired restaurant, offering an extensive menu leaving you feeling satisfied and content in an exciting atmosphere. Enjoy our delicious cuisine with floor to ceiling views of Geelong’s bay - you’ll feel like you’re floating on water.

A jewel on Geelong’s waterfront or a bit of a white elephant. Once a working pier known as Railway Pier, it’s now neither a pleasure pier nor used for regular shipping.

ARTS & CULTURAL PRECINCT

The area between Johnstone Park and Ryrie Street to the west of the shopping and business district of Geelong is known as the Geelong Arts Precinct. This area is also home to the Geelong Town Hall, which is the main council offices of the City of Greater Geelong.

The city is currently seeking funds for a radical overhaul of the precinct where the current facilities will receive a substantial redevelopment. There are also plans for some pretty innovative landscaping and street works which will bring the area into line with the rest of our recently rejuvenated city. This massive renovation will make the precinct one of the best arts and cultural precincts in the state. The scale of the project put the cost of the whole redevelopment in the vicinity of over 130 million dollars.

The Geelong Art Gallery is attached to the Geelong Town Hall, and it houses a magnificent and varied collection of artworks. Two paintings in particular are extremely special to our Gallery, first being the “View of Geelong” which was painted by Eugene von Guerad in 1856. This painting was bought recently by the museum from legendary English musical creator Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. “A Bush Burial” by Fredrick McCubbin, painted in 1890 is another of the gallery’s most precious works.

Geelong Arts Centre, formerly the Geelong Performing Arts Centre, is a performing arts, functions and events venue located in Geelong, Victoria, Australia.

OLD PAPER MILL

Geelong’s best kept secret The Fyansford Paper Mill is set on the Barwon River and overlooks the picturesque Buckley Falls. It was constructed in the 1870s and is one of the oldest paper mills in Australia.

The site is being transformed into a food, beverage, arts and cultural precinct, located within 10 minutes of Geelong’s CBD. With just under 5,000m2 of building space, the Mill is home to over 15 businesses, including a winery, café, gallery, yoga studio, homewares shop and escape room. There are also a number of small independent artists who have private studios across the site.

Visit the Fyansford Paper Mill one of Geelong’s historic places to visit. Discover all kinds of food, arts, activities, as well as our great history, see what’s on in Geelong here.

Fyansford Paper Mill one of Geelong’s most historic places to visit.

WESTERN BEACH

In those days there was an unwritten rule designating Western Beach for men’s bathing and Eastern Beach for women. But some ‘dastardly gentlemen’ would disregard the agreement scaring respectable women away.

Today the area is rarely used for swimming, but it’s still a popular stretch of foreshore connecting Rippleside to the rest of the Waterfront.

Here you’ll find the Boat House restaurant (Geelong’s best spot for fish and chips), the Poppykettle Playground, a designated fishing area, and the marvelous Western Beach Boardwalk.

Curving out over the water the boardwalk has wellplaced seats where you can sit back and watch the sea birds duck dive for fish. In the early morning, it’s perfect for watching the sun come up over the bay.

People have been swimming, boating, fishing and playing at Western Beach Geelong since the 1840’s

RIPPLESIDE PLAYGROUND

Rippleside Park is a beautiful regional foreshore park located on the Bay Trail.

This well utilised park provides exercise equipment, BBQ facilities, beach access and open spaces with views over Corio Bay.

Tucked in next to the reserve is tiny Rippleside Beach where you can bask in the sunshine or splash around in the water.

Overlooking the whole area is the bright and spacious Ripples On The Bay cafe. This stunning cafe serves excellent coffee and has huge windows with to-die-for water views.

The City partnered with the Touched by Olivia Foundation and the Federal and State Governments to build a regional-level play area for children of all abilities to play together.

The park features:

• 4x Accessible BBQ’s and picnic facilities

• 4x Accessible parking bays

• Registered Changing Places

A community built wooden Adventure playground built over six days in 2001 with all the usual ramps, walkways, steps, nooks and crannies to explore.

STEAMPACKET GARDENS

A path on the northern edge connecting the gardens to the bay has seats where you can enjoy the sea breeze and watch the nearby helicopter toing and froing.

On the eastern side you’ll find the Wharfshed Cafe serving yummy meals and to the west sits the delightful historic carousel.

There are some interesting art sculptures dotted around the park. Be sure to check out the Volunteer Rifle Band bollards and The Buoys sculpture, a group of former channel buoys that have been turned into a powerful piece of artwork.

The Geelong Waterfront Makers and Growers market (Steampacket Market) is held here on the first Sunday of each month. This popular market offers local produce, beautiful art and handicrafts, and lots of tasty treats.

Located right beside the water Steampacket Gardens Geelong is a big rectangle of lush lawn that’s perfect for a relaxing picnic or a game of frisbee.

THE CAROUSEL

One of only a few in the world this beautifully restored carousel is considered by many to be the best that’s still in use today.

Housed in a modern steel and glass enclosure the pavilion has an old-world carnival atmosphere that’s enhanced by a pipe organ playing Dixieland melodies.

A ride on this enchanting carousel is a magical experience for children of all ages and abilities, with a mobility lift that assists wheelchairs onto the attraction.

Entry into the pavilion is free. Tickets to ride the Carousel are $5.00.

The Carousel Pavilion can be booked for wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions, photo shoots, and private or corporate functions.

Housing a beautifully restored Carousel, this competitively priced, exclusive all-weather venue is available for private hire seven days a week from 3:00pm.

The Carousel Geelong is a rare 1892 Armitage-Herschell hand-carved wooden carousel.

OLD GAOL

The Geelong Gaol Museum is housed in the 170-year-old Geelong Gaol, the third oldest prison in Victoria. Opening in 1853 and closing in 1991 it housed male and female prisoners.

Over its history, it has been used as an industrial school for young girls, a hospital gaol and a military detention barracks. It was the site of 6 executions.

Today it houses display illustrating not only the history of the Geelong Gaol but the history of the corrections of Victoria.

It features displays on the Hulks, Colonial Prisons, Executions and Saga Behind the Armour along with some of the prisoner stories who have spent time behind the bluestone walls.

The Geelong Gaol Museum is open on weekends, school holidays and public holidays.

PSST, I KNOW OF A WAY TO PAY FOR YOUR DENTIST WORK

RETIREMENT

You’ve probably seen the ads — those dramatic beforeand-after photos showing someone with severely damaged teeth transformed into a dazzling smile. The pitch usually goes something like this: “Access your superannuation now to pay for your new smile!” It sounds tempting, especially when dental work can cost thousands. But here’s the catch — the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) have had enough of this kind of marketing and are taking serious action to stop it.

(Source: ABC Media release, October 2025 – “https://www. abc.net.au/news/2025-10-29/more-funding-for-dental-urgedas-super-withdrawals-soar/105939132’)

Superannuation is designed to provide income in retirement, not to fund cosmetic or medical procedures. While there are legitimate circumstances where you can access super early on compassionate grounds, this is intended for genuine financial hardship or necessary medical treatment — not as an easy way to cover elective dental work.

Recently, the ATO and Ahpra announced a joint crackdown on what they describe as “business models and inappropriate practices” that promote early release of super to pay for dental or medical procedures that are either unnecessary or excessively priced. Their concern is that some health practitioners and agents are encouraging people to use their retirement savings to pay for expensive cosmetic treatments that do not meet the legal criteria for early release.

And it’s not a small problem. New ATO data shows that applications for compassionate release of super have surged — particularly for dental services, where requests have more than doubled over the past two years. This rapid increase has raised red flags about whether all of these applications are genuine or being influenced by misleading marketing campaigns.

(Source: ATO media release, September 2024 – “ATO and Ahpra working together to protect superannuation and health integrity”)

The ATO’s stance is clear: accessing super on compassionate grounds should be a last resort — only when all other options for payment have been exhausted. This means that if you can pay through a payment plan, a personal loan, or another financing option, those avenues should be explored before even considering dipping into your super.

For health practitioners, the warning is equally serious. The ATO has published guidance for dentists and other medical professionals who assist patients in applying for early release of super. This information covers what medical documentation is required, how to properly complete medical reports, and what “behaviours of concern” the regulators are watching for. Essentially, practitioners who help clients misuse the system could find themselves under regulatory scrutiny or even disciplinary action from Ahpra.

(Sources:ATOwebsite–“Compassionatereleaseofsuperannuation: Guidance for health practitioners,” 2024; Ahpra Statement – “Joint work with ATO on misuse of compassionate super release,”2024)

Why is this such a big deal? Because once that super is gone, it’s gone for good — and the long-term impact on your retirement savings can be significant. A $10,000 withdrawal today might seem like a simple solution, but by the time you reach retirement, that same amount could have grown to $30,000 or more through compounding investment returns. In short, using super now for non-essential expenses can cost you your future comfort and security.

There are, of course, legitimate cases where dental work may fall under compassionate release — such as when the treatment is necessary to alleviate chronic pain, prevent deterioration of health, or restore basic function. But these situations are the exception, not the rule, and they require strong medical evidence to support the application.

So, if you’ve seen those ads promising a perfect smile funded by your super, think twice. The ATO and Ahpra are closing in on the businesses promoting these schemes, and individuals who misuse the system risk serious financial consequences. More importantly, your superannuation is meant to support you in retirement — not to pay for someone’s high dental invoice today.

The best approach? If you’re facing large dental or medical bills, talk to your financial adviser first. There may be safer and smarter ways to fund treatment without sacrificing your longterm financial wellbeing. After all, a great smile is wonderful — but peace of mind in retirement is even better.

You can read more about the ATO report here

Note also: The ATO has released information for health practitioners assisting their patients to apply for early access to super on compassionate grounds. The information includes material on: providing medical documents; medical report requirements; behaviours of concern.

It’s not always simple to gain access to the so-called “low means tested” accommodation benefit in aged care - and children encouraging parents to give away money in order to qualify may be stepping into a trap.

What are “LOW MEANS RESIDENTS” in aged care?

AGED CARE

In the context of Australia’s residential aged care system, a “low means resident” is a category used when assessing accommodation costs. Under current rules, when a person enters a residential aged-care home and their assessable assets and income fall below certain thresholds, they may qualify for a lower contribution to accommodation costs. (Challeger, 2025)

In simple form: if a parent has limited assets/income, they may be classified as low-means and so face lower daily accommodation contributions - i.e., they are not charged the full published “room price” but a reduced “daily accommodation contribution” (DAC) based on their means. (Challeger, 2025)

This can seem attractive: for a child or family member wanting to help their parent avoid high accommodation costs, it may appear logical to reduce the parent’s assets (for example by gifting) so the parent qualifies as low-means. But that is where the trap lies.

The trap: limited rooms and waiting lists

Here’s the key issue: although the low-means category exists, there is no guarantee of immediate access to an aged-care room under that category.

In fact:

Providers are not required to reserve a specific quota of rooms for low-means residents. (Catalyst Foundation, 2025)

The demand for low-means places may be high, and rooms in desirable locations may be scarce or have waiting lists.

If a parent has given away assets to “qualify” but then faces delay in admission (or ends up in a home where low-means rooms are unavailable), the hoped-for cost savings may not materialise or may come with compromise (e.g., location, room type, quality).

Moreover, for a resident to retain “low means” status, the means test is fixed at the point of entry and remains valid only while they remain in the same facility. If they move, or leave for more than 28 days and re-enter, their assets/income may be reassessed and they may lose the low-means classificationmeaning they could face higher contributions.

In short: Encouraging or helping a parent to “gift” funds to qualify as low-means before entry can back-fire if there isn’t availability, or if the parent later requires a different facility, or if circumstances change. It may also affect the parent’s financial security in other ways (e.g., ability to support themselves, to pay for other forms of care, or retain a cushion for emergencies).

Why

children should be cautious

Here are some cautionary points:

Timing and availability – Merely qualifying for low-means doesn’t secure an immediate place in a home of choice. Sites may fill, waiting lists or transfers may be needed, and the “cheap” room may be lower quality or further from family support.

Irreversible financial decisions – Gifting assets is often irreversible. If the parent’s health deteriorates, or they move to a better facility, the assets may be needed for more costly care or extra services.

Means test complexity – The rules for means testing aged-care accommodation are intricate, splitting assets, income, home ownership, couples, “protected persons”, etc. Mis-calculation may result in unexpected contributions or losing the low-means status. (Challeger, 2025)

Changing rules – With major aged-care reforms coming into effect on 1 November 2025, the landscape is about to change. Strategies based on current rules may not carry forward. Families should plan with full awareness of the incoming changes.

What’s changing from 1 November 2025?

From 1 November 2025, new rules under the revamped Aged Care Act 2024 (and associated regulations) will apply for new entrants to permanent residential aged care.

Major highlights:

The existing “means-tested care fee” will be abolished for new residents and replaced by a Non-Clinical Care Contribution (NCCC). (Department of Health, 2025)

A new “Hotelling Contribution” may apply (for everyday living costs — meals, laundry, utilities) for residents above income/ asset thresholds.

Providers will be allowed to retain 2% per annum of the lump sum refundable accommodation deposit (RAD) for up to 5 years (i.e., up to a 10% retention) on new entries after 1 Nov. (Aged Care Advisors, 2025)

Daily Accommodation Payments (DAPs) for those paying daily rather than lump sum will be indexed to inflation (twice yearly).

Ideas:

The “no worse off” protection means that those already in care on 30 October 2025 will retain their current arrangements unless they choose to opt-in to the new rules. (Simply Retirement, 2025)

Importantly for low-means residents: although the low-means category continues, there remains no requirement for providers to reserve a quota of low-means beds. (Catalyst Foundation)

So families planning ahead must recognise that the “cheap” entry via low-means doesn’t become easier under these reformsindeed, for many, costs for non-low-means residents will increase.

Final thoughts

Before encouraging a parent to give away assets (for example to reduce means and qualify as low-means), it is essential to pause and reflect:

Check availability: Is the desired home accepting low-means residents today? What is the waiting list?

Seek financial advice: Because the means testing, gifting rules, future care needs and the upcoming reforms are complex.

Consider flexibility: If the parent may need to move or wants a specific location/standard, a low-means room might not meet the need.

Understand what happens after entry: Will the asset gift affect other support (e.g., pension, aged-care subsidies)?

Factor in the reforms: From 1 November 2025, the rules change — so a strategy effective today may not translate into future savings in the same way.

In short: the low-means path may look attractive, but it carries risks — especially if decisions are made without full knowledge of availability, waiting lists, future changes and the parent’s long-term care needs. A considered plan, with professional advice, is strongly recommended.
