Every year in late February, the streets of Geelong West, Victoria, come alive with one of the country’s biggest cultural celebrations, Pako Festa. First held in 1983, Pako Festa started as a small community event created by the Ethnic Communities Council, local traders, and the city council to celebrate the many cultures in the Geelong region. The name “Pako” comes from Pakington Street, where the festival takes place. What began as a local party attracting about 12,000 people has grown into Victoria’s largest free multicultural street festival, drawing well over 100,000 visitors each year.
