How a Quiet Space in Filinvest City Became a Loud Statement on Urban Excellence

The Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel, located in Filinvest City, Muntinlupa, is the sole Philippine winner of the 2025 Urban Land Institute (ULI) Asia Pacific Award for Excellence. FAITH-BASED URBANISM IN PRACTICE

DESIGN THAT MOVES

Designed by Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP Architects, the chapel draws inspiration from the lily held by the Angel Gabriel, a symbol of purity and grace. Its curvilinear form evokes the Virgin Mother’s attire, while the roof forms petal-like shapes lifting skyward.

Inside, stained-glass windows by Barley Studios’ Creative Director Helen Whittaker—locally crafted by Kraut Enterprises—form a sixfold “flower of life” pattern, echoing the Marian apparitions to Saint Bernadette in Lourdes. Light shifts throughout the day, shaping the mood and transforming the space.

Engineered by ARUP teams in Manila, Japan, and London, its closed triangular geometry supports large spans and central openings, achieving a rare balance of softness and durability. Acoustics, lighting, and interiors by Filipino firms further refine the atmosphere. Teak pews from Cebu and altar sculptures by Daniel dela Cruz showcase local artistry alongside global collaboration.

The chapel’s recognition by ULI is a validation of a deeper philosophy: faith-based urbanism.

Joel Luna, Founder and Principal of JLPD and a jury member for the ULI Asia Pacific Awards, said, “It touched the heart of the users by creating a space for their faith.” When asked what made the chapel stand out among over 40 entries across Asia Pacific, he added, “There were undoubtedly exemplary projects in the running. But Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel carried a message about rekindling faith-based urbanism in contemporary property development in the Philippines. It showed how community impact matters even within a predominantly commercial development.”

The chapel, he explained, was a culminating piece in a larger urban setting, a counterpoint to the commercial character of Filinvest City in Alabang. Its presence was purposeful, its form uplifting, and its function deeply human.

This idea—that a non-revenue structure is a valuable addition to a business district—was not just refreshing. It was radical.

This approach integrates sacred spaces into the civic realm, not as isolated monuments, but as living parts of the city. In this model, chapels, mosques, and temples are not only places of worship but also social infrastructure: spaces that foster belonging, intergenerational connection, and civic engagement.

Globally, we are experiencing a social isolation and loneliness epidemic across all generations,” shares Belinda Bentley, Managing Director of 9Springs and Jury Co-chair. “Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel challenges the traditional approach to places of public worship by delivering a contemporary, vibrant community hub that celebrates spirituality, sustainability, social connections, and civic engagement.”

Since opening in October 2022, it has become a spiritual and civic anchor. People visit for Mass, reflection, community events, and shared traditions like the Triduum Procession, blending sacred and everyday life.

Outreach programs in partnership with the Filinvest City Association support underprivileged groups, including Elsie Gaches Village. Volunteerism and donations sustain these efforts, reinforcing the chapel’s role as a shared civic responsibility.

Its amphitheater garden—a tiered open space doubling as a floodplain—serves as both contemplative spot and event venue. Surrounding barrier-free hardscapes naturally guide visitors without signage or gates, ensuring accessibility for all.

For Luna, this award signals a shift in measuring excellence. “Past ULI winners focused on mega projects and revenuegenerating developments. In recent years, there has been growing recognition for projects that are more civic in nature. Size and financial success are no longer the main metrics— they are now overshadowed by contribution to community, sustainability, and people-centeredness.”

Bentley adds that the ULI Awards value the full development process, not just architecture or design. The chapel introduces “a contemporary civic engagement model that enhances sustainability and social connections which can be replicated by faith-based organizations globally.”

A FASTER COMMUTE WITH THE NORTH–SOUTH COMMUTER RAILWAY (NSCR)
