WELCOME to the inaugural edition of Fig Magazine in Charleston. As the owner and producer, I’m thrilled to bring this enthusiast’s guide to the magnificent city I call home.

My husband Tom and I moved to Charleston many years ago knowing it would be our forever home, with its beautiful weather and welcoming ocean beaches. We fell in love with this vibrant community, especially the relentless entrepreneurial spirit, and, of course, a culinary scene that has made Charleston a global food destination.

We were introduced to Fig Magazine and knew we needed to bring this unique publication to life in Charleston. The name Fig references the ancient fruit that has been a nourishing staple around the world, with the seeds signifying unity, prosperity, and connection. And that’s what Fig does best —connect readers to the people, places, and experiences that make life richer and more fulfilling.

Fig Magazine is an enthusiast’s guide to Charleston that showcases the small business

community, sharing positive stories and connecting the community through our quarterly print publication. We are excited to begin our journey as relentless champions for the local businesses, hardworking entrepreneurs, and visionary leaders who have made Charleston a unique destination for both residents and visitors.

With a 20-year history of representing exceptional cities, Fig Magazine is the perfect fit for Charleston. Our all-local team of designers, writers, photographers, and marketers are honored to shine a bright light in our community. Meet the talented team on page 60.

We are thankful to everyone who has embraced our mission, connected us with movers and shakers, provided guidance, and cheered us on. Thank you to you, our readers, who are holding the very first issue in your hands. We hope that you follow along on our journey by engaging with each issue, signing up for our weekly e-newsletter, connecting on social media, and discovering even more reasons to fall in love with Charleston.

With gratitude,

Jennifer Wiggin & the Fig Magazine team

From farm to family, fresh produce with a purpose

THE COASTAL CONSERVATION LEAGUE has spent decades protecting the Lowcountry’s natural beauty by advocating for clean water, shaping smart policies around sustainability, and championing local farmers.

As part of its GrowFood Carolina initiative, community members can purchase a weekly produce box packed with a colorful mix of locally grown fruits, vegetables, and pantry items. This is just one way the organization supports farmers across the state.

Each GrowFood box makes a thoughtful (and tasty) gift this holiday season. Place an order at coastalconservationleague.org.

Fresh Face: Katsubō

KATSUBŌ SERVES UP VIBRANT NOODLE DISHES AND COMFORT FOOD in Park Circle, North Charleston. Open six days a week, it’s the brainchild of Chef Joe Nierstedt, formerly of KinFolk, who teamed up with Abby Leibowitz to turn a ramen and chicken sando pop - up into something permanent.

“Our core values start with being a great neighbor,” Abby said. “That means hiring local talent, collaborating with nearby businesses, and building a space that feels welcoming to everyone—from solo diners at the bar to families sharing a big bowl of noodles.”

Expect slow - simmered broths, crisp double-fried chicken, and ramen bowls like Tokyo Shoyu or Yuzu Shio that hit all the cozy, crave-worthy notes. The decor is playful and welcoming. Joe describes it as clean and modern but full of character.

“Think Japanese pop culture meets Charleston comfort,” Joe said. “You’ll see nods to anime and Godzilla, but it still feels warm and personal. I want people to walk in, take a deep breath,

and immediately feel like they’ve found their spot—a place that’s easy to love and hard to leave.”

Whether you’re craving ramen or a happy hour snack, Katsubō delivers both warmth and flavor with Charleston flair. Beyond the mouth-watering bowls and buns, the vibe and great service keep people coming back. With rotating specials and a deep respect for Japanese comfort food, Katsubō brings serious soul to every slurp and bite.

Visit the shop for a bowl of piping hot ramen or order online at katsuboeats.com.

“We care deeply about the experience—from the broth to the music to the smile you get when you walk in. Katsubō isn’t just about food; it’s about how you feel while you’re here. We do things with intention.”

Planted with Mission. Grown in Creativity.

BORN IN THE ATTIC OF A FARMHOUSE in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Fig Magazine was created in 2005 by founder Deborah Brandt as a way to help revitalize her hometown after seeing the city with fresh eyes. She had recently moved back from New York City, and she wanted to use her creativity to shine a light on the small businesses that called Lancaster home. The magazine, which was created and produced by her design studio Fig Industries, started small—and with each edition that hit mailboxes, Fig became a consistent and powerful voice for buying local and appreciating the beauty of creativity and connection.

Over the years, new locations were opened and Fig matured—bringing new ideas and energy with each issue—while staying true to the original mission. Each local Fig team knows that creative communication can inform, inspire, and engage—making the world a brighter, more connected place.

Find out more at figmagazine.com.

When we created Fig Magazine, we designed it to be beautiful and purposeful—an elevated lookbook that told stories and connected readers to inspiring people doing impactful things. We sent it right to homes, asking the community to support their local businesses. As technology evolved, we reached people through their email, web searches, and social platforms. The seed was planted, and the love slowly began to grow.

Something happened in Lancaster when people started finding reasons to love it. It was an ember that was just starting to glow—pride in our hardworking community of makers and doers. Fast forward two decades, and Lancaster has transformed into an artistic and historic city of creative entrepreneurs.

We are thrilled to welcome Charleston to the Fig family, led by Jennifer Wiggin and her wildly creative and fully local team, who will proudly shine a light on the Charleston community.”

Deborah Brandt, Founder of Fig Magazine & Owner of Fig Industries

Where history takes a bow

BUILT IN 1736, the Dock Street Theatre was the first structure in America built solely for theatrical productions. After the original structure was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1740, it was rebuilt in 1809 as the Planter’s Hotel. Eventually falling into disrepair and becoming abandoned in 1928, the building was transformed into a cultural mainstay in 1937. Now run by the City of Charleston, the theatre is home to Charleston Stage and used annually as a venue for the Spoleto Festival USA, Charleston Literary Festival, and the MOJA Arts Festival. For almost 300 years since the Dock Street Theatre was built, it remains a downtown jewel.

Romaine Heyward, Special Facilities Director, City of Charleston

Setting the stage

CHARLESTON STAGE is South Carolina’s largest professional theatre company, producing nine amazing shows each season at the historic Dock Street Theatre. Each year, Charleston Stage serves over 30,000 students through school-day matinees and the Out-of-the-Box program, bringing performances to students in rural communities. For high school students, Charleston Stage offers invaluable stage crew experience for aspiring theater professionals. Each ticket purchased and donation made to Charleston Stage empowers the next generation, instilling a greater sense of collaboration, confidence, and self-esteem.

Arts & Culture The heartbeat of Charleston

AT FIG MAGAZINE, we believe creativity can inform, inspire, and broaden perceptions— making the world a brighter, more connected place. From creators and curators to artists and arts organizations, Charleston is rich in talent and heart. With each issue of Fig Magazine, we will introduce you to artists who make the city a destination for art enthusiasts and collectors.

The Gaillard Center hosts world-class performances, while Charleston Stage and Pure Theater keep local theater thriving. The Charleston Literary Festival welcomes voices from around the globe, while the worldrenowned Spoleto Festival USA fills theatres,

churches, and outdoor spaces around town with music, dance, and drama for nearly three weeks. The International African American Museum honors the region’s deep Gullah roots and enduring legacy. Add in live music performances at the eclectic Pour House, the smoky flavors of the annual fall BBQ Festival, and so much more. All year long, you’ll find Charlestonians celebrating what they love most—good stories, good music, and good company.

We invite you to find your passion, buy local art, and engage in Charleston’s creative community.

Fresh Face: Mom Me Minute

MOM ME MINUTE is a Charleston-based home support service offering hands-on help for modern mothers who are doing too much with too little support. Founded in 2024 by Liz Donovan, who spent a decade in corporate life and extensive travels, Mom Me Minute offers services that stem from a simple, personal truth: mothers don’t need more pressure; they need relief. “You already have a home,” Liz said. “Let’s make it feel like a sanctuary, not a stressor. When your space is organized, your mental load becomes lighter. It does not disappear, but it gets quieter. And that creates something modern families are craving: presence. This is not about perfection. It is about showing up fully for your home, your people, your peace, and yourself.”

With warmth, empathy, and intuition, Mom Me Minute provides in-home support sessions tailored to each family’s rhythms and priorities. From organizational resets in pantries, playrooms, and closets to laundry care, meal prep, errands, bill management and budget organization, the support is practical,

judgment-free, and designed for families in all stages of life. “I want to normalize asking for help,” Liz said. “We live in a culture that still rewards doing it all alone—and women are quietly burning out because of it. When a mother is supported, the whole family functions better. And when families are stronger, communities are stronger.”

With maternal mental health challenges on the rise and traditional support systems stretched thin, this work has never been more vital. For many Charleston families—especially those far from extended help—Mom Me Minute offers more than assistance with chores. It creates breathing room, presence, and the capacity to enjoy everyday life more fully. Liz hopes Mom Me Minute becomes a small but powerful part of that shift here in Charleston. Not just by offering in-home relief, but by creating flexible, meaningful work for other women who want to support families while raising their own.

Dining Savor the city

CHARLESTON IS A DESTINATION FOR FOOD LOVERS

. We know because we’ve tasted and sipped our way through our city’s acclaimed restaurant scene. Part of Fig Magazine’s mission is rooted in supporting a sustainable community that will thrive for generations to come – and we believe when a city’s restaurant scene thrives, so does the city that surrounds it.

Each issue of Fig Magazine is full of local delights, international flavors, and dining destinations. Magnolia sets the bar for seasonal Southern dining, while Shuai Wang’s Jackrabbit Filly brings bold Chinese-American flair. Seafood

is the star at Hank’s and at 167 Raw. Tommy Hall ensures that Halls Chophouse delivers a perfect steak and cocktail with signature warmth. No visit is complete without Rodney Scott’s legendary whole-hog barbecue that’s smoky and soulful. And James Beard Awardwinner, Bertha’s Kitchen in North Charleston proves that sometimes the best meals are tucked just off the beaten path.

At Fig Magazine, we celebrate Charleston as a global food destination that locals can still call their own.

Where experts become thought leaders

CURATED STUDIOS was born from the realization that brilliant minds shouldn’t be held back by marketing overwhelm. Co-founded by industry veterans Karissa Tunis, Abigail Ray, and Katie Palmer, the studio emerged from countless conversations with talented entrepreneurs, C-suite leaders, and subject matter experts who had powerful stories to tell but lacked a clear path to amplify them.

Drawing on their combined years of experience, the founders built Curated Studios to transform experts into recognized thought leaders. The studio seamlessly integrates four core pillars—strategy, branding, media, and marketing—into one cohesive approach. Whether launching a podcast, refining brand identity, producing video content, or building a multiplatform campaign, every element works in harmony to tell a larger story.

Historic Luxury

NESTLED BENEATH CENTURIES-OLD OAKS,

Wicklow Hall is a luxury 8-room boutique bed & breakfast in Georgetown. Beautifully hand-restored by owners Judith and David Rinella, rooms combine traditional Southern design with clean, modern touches. Opened in 2025, Wicklow Hall has been acclaimed as one of the South’s best new destinations for weddings, gatherings, and unforgettable getaways.

Dim sum & then some

INSPIRED BY THE FOOD OF SOUTHERN CHINA, Beautiful South reimagines takeout classics and dim sum bites with a refined, modern touch. Here you’ll find General Tso’s, handmade dumplings, and Cantonese-style Roast Duck paired with inventive cocktails in a moody, stylish setting. It’s the kind of place made for sharing, because choosing just one dish isn’t an option.
