Spring into motion

If you look at the cover of this Spring issue, you’ll notice I’m on a longboard from Salty’s Surf Shop and rocking a dress and shoes from Monkee's of Columbia. That’s not an accident.

Salty’s has been part of Columbia for decades, and so has Paul Goff, who I remember shopping with back in my college days. Back then, I was skating through the University of South Carolina, weaving around the Horseshoe, chasing that unmistakable feeling of freedom that comes with being young and fearless. Being on a board again reminded me how much joy can live in the things we did "back in the day"—and how often we forget to make time for them.

This issue is an invitation to spring into motion and get moving in some new and exciting ways. So go ahead. Try the new class. Sign up for the race. Put your helmet on and get on the bike, the rollerblades, or the skateboard. Columbia gives us so many incredible places to move, breathe, and play—from Finlay Park to Owens Field, from the Horseshoe at USC to the Riverwalk and

beyond. These public spaces are gifts. Use them.

And while you’re out there, don’t forget the small businesses that help shape these moments and memories. Our local retail shops, restaurants, and makers are part of what makes this city feel like home. Supporting them isn’t just about shopping local—it’s about investing in the stories, relationships, and longevity that keeps Columbia moving forward.

Spring is here. Let it move you.

Warmly,

Nothing beats stronger than a mother’s heart

Imagine spending weeks in a hospital room, worn down by long days and constant uncertainty. The sounds of monitors and machines fade into the background as all attention stays focused on one thing—your child receiving critical care. Questions linger, routines disappear, and daily needs like meals and rest often come last.

For the Mothers who rely on the Ronald McDonald House, this is everyday life. Leaving their child’s side is difficult, but each evening they find a nearby place to rest, eat, and breathe for a moment. Families are welcomed by caring staff, offered a warm meal, and given the comfort of a safe, supportive environment—at no cost and for as long as they need. Ronald McDonald House Charities of Columbia, SC serves as a “home away from home” for families who have children receiving critical care at local hospitals, absorbing all costs and meeting all needs, so that the families’ sole focus can be on the care and treatment of their child.

EMILY AND MARLO’S STORY: No one ever expects their child to face cancer. We learned on June 9 that Emily had Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and within four weeks she began treatment. I had long admired the work of Ronald McDonald House, first volunteering with RMH as an ADPi in 1991. This time, however, we were on the other side, experiencing firsthand the generosity, love, and support they provide to patients and families. Even at 17, Emily was embraced with daily visits that made her feel safe, supported, and hopeful. We also witnessed the incredible care volunteers gave younger patients, helping ease an unimaginably difficult time. We will always be grateful to RMH and its staff for being there when we needed them most. Now Emily and her younger sister, Lauren—both ADPis at USC—love giving back by volunteering with RMH, helping others the way we were once helped. It is an experience we will never forget and for which we will always be thankful.

ELYSE AND JATAISA’S STORY: Jataisa Garner always dreamed of becoming a mother, and that dream came true with the birth of her sweet baby girl, Elyse. Along with overwhelming joy came unexpected fear, as Elyse was born with Down syndrome and leukemia and was transferred from Spartanburg to Prisma Health Richland in Columbia for critical, lifesaving care. Determined to remain by her daughter’s side, Jataisa left her job and relocated to a city where she had no family, no support system, and no place to stay.

A hospital social worker introduced her to the Ronald McDonald House, providing not only a place to stay but comfort, stability, and community during the most difficult chapter of her life. “The Ronald McDonald House made it possible for me to be by my baby’s side while she was in the hospital. I never missed a feeding, a decision, or a smile,” Jataisa shared.

Today, baby Elyse continues bravely fighting the challenges before her, and because of the Ronald McDonald House, she does so with her strongest warrior—her mama—right by her side.

This Mother’s Day, help Ronald McDonald House lift the burdens and offer much needed relief and care to our strongest warriors: Our Mothers. By donating, your gift will ensure Mothers like Marlo and Jataisa stay by the sides of their babies, focusing only on what matters most: giving them the healthiest, happiest, incredible life.

Social Mission Good Samaritan Clinic

It was 25 years ago when Dr. Lidia Navarrete was first called to launch the Good Samaritan Clinic. A woman of strong faith with a sincere dedication to public health, Dr. Navarrete wanted to create an open, caring environment where basic healthcare was not only affordable—but free. Her bootson-the-ground efforts made the Good Samaritan Clinic what it is today: a healthcare nonprofit comprised of four clinics providing no-cost primary and preventative care for people experiencing poverty.

Three of their four clinic locations were renovated from houses directly in the neighborhoods and communities they serve, meeting participants where they’re at in a move Executive Director Mike Young considers “punk rock.”

There, volunteer teams of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers offer crucial primary care resources with regular check-ups, preventative medicine, and diagnostic and treatment services for chronic conditions, like high blood pressure and diabetes. Twice a month, women’s healthcare specialists join the clinics to provide gynecological and obstetrics care. And starting this year, the Good Samaritan Clinic is launching a brand new mental health initiative with monthly counseling sessions, made possible through support from the CW and Dorothy G. Love Foundation.

Over the course of the last year, the Good Samaritan Clinic provided free healthcare services to over 600 individual patients—an impressive number, and one they hope to grow in 2026. With initiatives to see more patients, increase their mental health offerings, and create a more robust women’s healthcare program, the Clinic is looking to bring on more volunteer providers.

Most volunteers spend one shift a month (always in the afternoon and evening) giving their time and hands-on expertise to the Clinic, though Young and the rest of his team are grateful for any amount of time their volunteers can give. If you or your friends are interested in volunteering and giving your free time to an amazing cause, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Good Samaritan Clinic’s team.

With ever-increasing costs and financial barriers to medical care, we’re extremely proud to feature the Good Samaritan Clinic as our 2026 Social Mission partner. Over the course of four Fig Columbia issues, you’ll learn about the Clinic’s core values, initiatives, and exceptional services—made possible by the over 150 volunteers who give their time to the Clinic’s mission.

The Clinic is celebrating their 25th anniversary and the retirement of their founder, Dr. Navarrete, on March 27! If you’re interested in sponsoring the event, please contact Executive Director Mike Young at mike@goodsamaritansc.org.

A season for supporting local

A Message from the City Manager

Columbia’s small businesses are the heart of our City. They are the dreamers, risk-takers, and community builders who give our neighborhoods their character and our local economy its strength. From family-owned restaurants and retailers to hobby-turned-business models and service providers, our small businesses help define what makes Columbia such a vibrant place to live, work, and play.

As we move into spring, I want to personally thank our small business community for their resilience, innovation, and continued investment in our City, especially during the first quarter of the year, which can often be one of the most challenging. Your dedication does not go unnoticed, and the City of Columbia remains committed to creating an environment where local businesses can grow and thrive.

I also encourage our residents and visitors to be intentional about shopping local. Every purchase made at a small business is an investment in our community. It supports local jobs, strengthens our neighborhoods, and helps ensure that the unique spirit of Columbia continues to flourish.

Together, we uplift our small businesses and ensure they remain a cornerstone of Columbia’s success. Thank you for choosing local and for supporting the entrepreneurs who make our City extraordinary.

Warm regards,

Authentic Zora Capers

Columbia has a way of inspiring its determined dreamers, and for Zora Capers, Columbia is the perfect backdrop for helping others grow—both in fitness and in life. As the owner and head coach of The Garden Gym, Zora has spent the last ten years in the fitness and wellness industry, bringing every ounce of her experience to her clients in a space that feels welcoming, supportive, and judgment-free.

“I started The Garden Gym because I saw a gap between intimidating gym environments and what people actually need,” Zora explains. Her journey began with strength training—in gyms, at home, and even traveling to clients— but she noticed a common thread: many women feel unsure where to start or nervous stepping into a traditional gym. “I wanted to create a place where anyone, whether brand new to fitness or seasoned, could feel safe, supported, and empowered to grow.”

The Garden Gym’s mission is simple: to help people cultivate sustainable strength physically, mentally, and spiritually. "Fitness grows like a garden, planting healthy gym habits and creating an environment where people can grow at their own pace,” Zora says. Born and raised in Columbia, she wanted her gym to reflect the city’s strong sense of community, wellness, and genuine connection. “Columbia embodies the kind of support I wanted for The Garden Gym,” she adds.

Zora’s approach is personal, intentional, and rooted in expertise. As a certified orthopedic nurse, she understands injury prevention and tailors every program to meet individual goals, abilities, and challenges. “No two programs are the same,” she emphasizes. “It’s not about chasing a certain look or quick fixes. It’s about education, long-term growth, and real relationships.”

With spring in full swing, Zora encourages everyone to “spring into motion” through The Garden Gym’s personal training, small group sessions, and community programs in the works. “Columbia is full of supportive, wellness-driven people. There are always ways to get moving—whether it’s a walk along the Riverfront Park or Saluda Riverwalk, joining a local running club, or participating in our gym events,” she says.

For Zora, fitness is more than movement—it’s a way to cultivate confidence, strength, and a sense of belonging. In Columbia, she has built a space where all of that can flourish.

Follow The Garden Gym on Instagram, @thegardengymsc, to stay up to date on their grand opening, training tips, and more!

Zora's perfect day in Columbia: Training her clients, taking a stroll through Riverfront Park, grabbing a bite at her favorite spots—like Savage Craft, Gather, or Vino Sabor—and spending time with friends.

Homegrown habitats Keeping Columbia wild

Turn your backyard into a vibrant oasis for our state's native species with a little help from the South Carolina Wildlife Federation’s Garden for Wildlife program. All you have to do is incorporate a few native plants (available for purchase at the SCWF website), food, water, cover, and places to raise young, and your yard or home garden can become an essential habitat for our state's wildlife!

Learn more about the program and how your yard can become a Palmetto Wildlife Habitat by visiting scwf.org/habitats.

Since 1989, Carolina Wildlife Center has been devoted to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of the state’s wildlife in need of care. What started with a few friends in a garage has since grown into an important nonprofit in our community, supported by generous donors and passionate volunteers alike. As the Midlands’ only wildlife rehabilitation center licensed to care for reptiles, birds, and mammals, it’s up to Columbia to help keep our city’s wildlife healthy for years to come.

The women of Abacus

ABACUS PLANNING GROUP was founded by a woman. So it's not surprising that 28 years later, women find it an embracing place to hone their talents and realize their ambitions—to launch, grow, and top off successful careers. Note: the same can be said for the accomplished men on their team. But today's story is not about them. Sorry, guys.

1 // They know their stuff

A core cultural norm at Abacus is to seek mastery: to commit fully to developing the skills, expertise, and wisdom to excel in their profession. The women on Abacus's team have clearly taken this to heart, with 13 Certified Financial Planners and eight Financial Paraplanner Qualified Professionals.

2 // They take the lead

Abacus has a knack for recognizing—and hiring—natural leadership talent. But it doesn't stop there. Abacus nurtures that talent.

Per team member Carman Young, "Abacus empowers younger female employees by encouraging us to step into leadership positions within the firm early on. For example, leading staff meetings, organizing team projects, and collaborating firsthand with senior leaders."

3 // They are open-hearted

To explain the origin of Abacus's name, the firm says, "It takes technical knowledge and a knowing human touch to solve a problem on an abacus. That defines us perfectly." It also describes the women of Abacus. In addition to extensive education and collective decades of experience in financial planning, they also approach their clients with exceptional empathy, patience, and capacity to listen.

Financial Advisor Ann Beckwith, CFP®, puts it this way: Ann and the rest of the Abacus team bring that same compassion to each of their clients, who come seeking financial guidance through the many phases of life.

I find genuine joy in understanding, counseling, and helping people. And that means getting to know, really know, them.”

Whip-smart, expertly trained, deeply committed— everything you expect from the wonder women of Abacus.

Even with the quick pace, our team of designers never once compromised on the creativity, voice, and quality of the Stacked brand.
