A note from Fig Magazine

AS WE BEGIN THE FALL SEASON, when Charleston seems to come alive with even more art, design, music, and creativity than usual, I am reminded of how deeply craft and culture are woven into the fabric of our city. A casual stroll down any street can bring an unexpected delight—the vibrant color of a wall, the scent of a flower, the sounds of a street musician, or the inimitable evidence of inspiration around any corner. While putting this fall issue of Fig Magazine together, I had the pleasure of being welcomed into markets, boutiques, and eateries I had never visited before. There is a particular joy in discovering a beautifully designed shop that makes you feel as though you belong the moment you walk through the door. And there is something truly magical about watching a designer bring together garments, shoes, hats, and jewelry seemingly out of thin air, transforming individual pieces into a stunning look that will turn heads.

I also had the opportunity to ask some of Charleston’s most creative minds about the “why” behind what they do. How they embrace their purpose reminded me of the experience of reading a great book, savoring the perfect bite of an extraordinary meal, or receiving a warm hug from a long-lost friend. For a moment, you are transported—to a place of comfort, wellbeing, and connection. Charleston has long been a destination for creatives—artists, musicians, designers, makers, and all those who possess the remarkable gift of crafting beauty and making people feel welcome. As you turn the pages of this issue, I invite you to step inside and experience some of the wonderful businesses, people, and places that make our city so special. Take a chance on somewhere new. Wander a little farther. Follow your curiosity. You never know what you might discover just around the corner. Fall into wonder, Jennifer Wiggin & the Fig Magazine team Learn more at figmagazinecharleston.com

A new chapter for Allan Park TUCKED AWAY IN CHARLESTON’S historic Hampton Park Terrace neighborhood, Allan Park is one of the city’s best-kept secrets. Since its establishment more than a century ago, this neighborhood park has been a peaceful place for neighbors to gather. Today, it continues to provide a welcoming backdrop for community concerts, celebrations, and everyday moments of connection. The Charleston Parks Conservancy— a beloved local nonprofit dedicated to cultivating exceptional public gardens and experiences in Charleston’s city parks for everyone—has embarked on a renovation project to ensure Allan Park continues to thrive for generations to come. Guided by community input, the project will preserve the park’s historic charm while enhancing accessibility, safety, and landscaping with restored pathways, refreshed gardens, improved lighting, expanded seating, and updates to the iconic fountain. The Conservancy invites you to stroll through this hidden gem, sit on a bench and listen to the fountain, or bring your family for a picnic and enjoy this special corner of Charleston.

You already know ALICE. ALICE® stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. It describes working households that earn above the federal poverty level but still cannot afford the true cost of living. They care for our children. Prepare meals at our favorite restaurants. Staff our hospitals, hotels and local businesses. They work with us, sit next to us at church and are part of our everyday lives. They work hard. They contribute to our community. Yet many are still one car repair, medical bill or missed shift away from falling behind. When there is no room left in the budget, repairing the car needed to get to work can mean falling behind on rent. A gap in child care can put a job at risk. A needed prescription can leave less for groceries.

HERE’S THE MATH:

of tri-county households earn less than this budget—they live below the ALICE Threshold. That is 129,589 households across Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties.

A plan built around each family. TRIDENT UNITED WAY FAMILY COACHES work one-on-one with families to understand what is getting in the way and build a practical plan around the goals they set. Over 12 to 24 months, families work toward those goals, whether that means increasing income, reducing debt, improving credit, building savings or creating more breathing room in the monthly budget. Families set their own goals. Coaches help turn their goals into a plan.

Meeting families where they are. WORKING FAMILIES should not have to miss a shift, arrange child care or travel across town to meet with a Family Coach. The Thrive@TM program meets families where they are. Families can also meet virtually or in person at one of four Centers for Strong Families across the tri-county.

TRIDENT UNITED WAY cannot reach these goals alone. It will take employers, nonprofits, schools, faith communities, donors and neighbors working together. Building culture, beyond the stage CHARLESTON GAILLARD CENTER is more than a venue. It is where Charleston’s culture lives, grows, and belongs to everyone who calls this city home. This season, the Charleston Gaillard Center opens its doors wider than ever. Through Boundless, a newly announced programming initiative, the Gaillard carries performances beyond its own walls and into venues across the city. Boundless is not a single program or a single audience. It is a citywide invitation bringing live music, dance, and theater to the cultural spaces where Charleston already gathers. The Gaillard is not asking the community to come find culture. It brings culture home. That same belief, that the arts belong to everyone, shapes the Gaillard’s Education and Community Program. Teaching artists step into Lowcountry

classrooms to spark a student’s first encounter with creative expression. Masterclasses connect rising performers with artists who inspire them. For thousands of students each year, the Gaillard is not a building. It is a beginning. The Gaillard’s full 2026–2027 season carries this spirit onto the Martha and John M. Rivers Performance Hall stage with a robust lineup spanning music, dance, theater, and more. Every note played and every story told this season exists because Charleston chose to make room for it. That is what a ticket purchase makes possible. That is what a membership sustains. Every seat filled and every gift given becomes part of something larger: a Charleston where the arts are not a destination but a home, open to all who walk through it.

For a cozier fall THINGS ARE COOLING DOWN in the Lowcountry. Autumn means crisp evenings, crackling campfires, and finally a little relief from the summer heat. But while it may feel better outside, the humidity underneath your home may be telling a different story. Crawlspaces can continue holding high levels of moisture well into the fall, creating the perfect environment for mold, wood rot, and other issues that can affect the health of your home.

As Charleston’s trusted crawlspace and foundation experts, their team knows what Lowcountry homes are up against. From moisture control and encapsulation to foundation repair, they will provide practical solutions designed to protect what’s underneath your home—so you can spend less time worrying about your crawlspace and more time enjoying everything fall has to offer.

Where your pet is family Dr. Taylor Yeates

PARK CIRCLE VETERINARY CLINIC opens this fall on Spruill Avenue, a neighborhood clinic built for the pets—and people—of Park Circle. Led by Dr. Taylor Yeates and a team with deep Charleston roots, the clinic is designed around knowing patients and families by name. Their approach centers on spectrum-of-care medicine: treatment options that meet each family’s real-world budget and circumstances, not a single one-size-fits-all standard. It’s an invitation to build something small that still matters—one pet, one family, one relationship at a time. 4340 Spruill Avenue, North Charleston 843.258.4078 parkcirclevet.com

It’s time for a Yard Party

WHAT’S BETTER THAN AUTUMN in the Lowcountry? Autumn in the Lowcountry with a Yard Party in hand on the back lawn at Holy City Brewing. Between the waterfront views and the refreshing flavors of Pineapple Lemonade or Citrus Crush, it’s the perfect recipe for a crisp fall afternoon in North Charleston. While you’re there, pair your Yard Party with Holy City’s wings and fries. Good food, a cool breeze off the creek, and a cold drink shared with friends? That’s the kind of afternoon you won’t forget.

Paying it forward IN TODAY’S WORLD of generational wealth and nepotism, there’s something worth celebrating about someone who builds a business from the ground up. When that same person invests his success in his employees, it’s worth throwing a party. Dan Riley of Capital Service Group could be the guest of honor. What started in 1998 with $17, business cards, and some hustle is now a full-scale commercial cleaning and janitorial company with a simple philosophy: take care of your front-line workers, and they’ll take care of your clients. The result? Everyone wins. Riley points to employees who earn six figures and others who have been with the company for decades. Now, Capital Service Group takes that philosophy a step further, working with Trident United Way to build a fund that provides support to employees when they need it most: helping with unexpected expenses to help them succeed. When you work with Capital Service Group, you’re working with a team that cares about you, because their team knows what it feels like to be cared for, too.

From the spirit of an undefeated Jaliscan luchador with delusions of grandeur and the wild brain of actor Danny McBride comes one of the top ten fastest-growing tequila brands in the United States, now found at restaurants like Sorelle, Sullivan’s Fish Camp, Blind Tiger, and many more. This is the real deal. 100% blue agave. Zero additives. Crafted at a fourth-generation family distillery in the lowlands of Jalisco. Award-winning and unmistakably fun. Reconnecting Charleston THE FRIENDS OF THE LOWLINE have a clear plan: alongside the City of Charleston they are building, promoting, and programming the Lowline—what will become a twomile linear park connecting Mount Pleasant, downtown Charleston, and West Ashley—to reconnect a region that has been historically divided. Once a thriving, vibrant community, the Lowline corridor was split by history and progress. From a Christmas Day in 1830, when the first steam locomotive pulled passengers on a public railroad beginning at Line Street, to the building of I-26 right through a neighborhood, this is an area that has too often been overlooked. But that stops now. Today, the team is inviting the neighborhoods along the corridor, the rest of the city, and everyone who visits it to join them in building something that will belong to all of us, and grow even more beloved over time.

Community is key CHARLESTON MARINE may have grown considerably over the past 20 years, but they have remained true to their roots as a local, family-owned business with a handson approach to caring for their customers. Mt. Pleasant Jeep is another family-owned local business, founded and operated by four brothers. Together, the two businesses collaborated to showcase the power and capability of Mt. Pleasant Jeep’s new Ram trucks (see back cover). When local businesses come together to partner with one another, it reflects the spirit of connection that makes our community so special.

Boat shown here and on back cover: 2025 Parker 230 Coastal Elite

Charleston Marine offers concierge-level service to help you find your perfect boat and get out on the coastal waterways we call home. Representing Parker, Jupiter, and ShearWater boats, along with Yamaha, Mercury, and Suzuki outboards, they work on building long-term relationships with their customers rather than simply selling them a boat or completing a repair. The result? More time on the water with the people you love. .
