Director's Report cont. from p1— As promised, we'll continue to keep you updated on our due diligence work to explore merging with the YMCA. the April meeting was terrific-- please keep coming. Here's the upcoming meeting schedule:
IN THE GALLERY at FiftyNorth Artist: Gary Melquist Exibit: May 5 through May 29
FIFTYNORTH COMMUNITY UPDATE MEETING FiftyNorth, Room 105, 1-2pm 3rd Wednesday of the month May 20 | June 17 | July 15
And let's keep the Season of Celebration going together. We have a great 5 Courses For FiftyNorth Dinner coming up, and don't forget to save the date for our June 20 FiftyNorth Family Festival. I am so glad to be here, sharing the adventure of life with you. I don't know about you, but Bruce Springsteen is one of my go-tos for spring energy. Does it get any better than Thunder Road with the windows rolled down? "Maybe we aint that young anymore," but, "show a little faith, there's magic in the night." Here's to FiftyNorth magic!
ART IS THE BEST THERAPY Gary Melquist was a survivor, he had a diagnosis of manic depression. He lived with the trials of misdiagnosis and harmful treatments. But his journey through mental illness provided him with a positive outlook on life. Gary lived in Minneapolis all of his life. He traveled often to Northfield to visit his sister, Paula Case. "Due to my recent diagnosis of cancer I told my sister I won't be at FiftyNorth’s art exhibit in May. Paula reassured me my art display will advocate for others struggling through the highs and lows of manic depression." Gary's age at the time of his death was 79 (DOD 3-9-2026). The pictures in his display represent the many places he visited. His art was a reminder to himself and others of the potential that lies within everyone; especially those with a mental disorder. When you see a bright color sunset that is Gary sending a splash of color to us all. Thank You to FiftyNorth for honoring Mental Health Awareness Month. SUBMITTED BY PAULA CASE Gary’s exhibit will be on display from May 5th through May 29th. The reception is May 27th from 5:00 to 7:00. The evening of the reception Gary’s family would like attendees to take a painting home.

FITNESS NEWS CRAIG’S CORNER Fitness Manager, Craig Swenson (507) 664-3702 or Craig.Swenson@fiftynorth.org
A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO KATE & CARLA At FiftyNorth, we take great pride in offering more than 60 phenomenal fitness classes each week to the Northfield community. These classes are led by some of the most dedicated and skilled instructors and trainers in the industry— professionals who adapt workouts with care, motivate with heart, and make every participant feel welcome. They are truly the backbone of the fitness and wellness experience at FiftyNorth, and we are honored to have them as part of our family. Two longtime instructors, Kate Stuart and Carla Johnson, will be stepping away from their regular teaching roles. While we are saddened to see them go, we are also excited for the new chapters ahead. Carla will continue to serve on the FiftyNorth Board of Directors and the YMCA task force, and Kate will be retiring from weekly teaching but plans to return for session‑based classes in the future. Please join me in thanking both Kate and Carla for the remarkable work they have done and the lasting impact they have made at FiftyNorth. Their dedication, energy, and care have enriched our community in countless ways. — Craig

VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH

FiftyNorth wants to recognize and thank the Tax-Aide volunteers that work diligently to provide tax preparation services free of charge to our members and other folks in the community. The AARP Tax-Aides are the unsung heroes of tax season. The impact they have is truly massive, often helping those who might otherwise struggle to navigate the complexities of the tax code. Here is why their work is so vital: Financial Lifeline: For many seniors and low-to-moderate-income families, the cost of a professional tax preparer can be a significant burden. These volunteers save taxpayers hundreds of dollars in fees. Ensuring Accuracy: They help people claim important credits they might miss, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Child Tax Credit (CTC), putting money directly back into the pockets of those who need it most. Peace of Mind: Tax season is notoriously stressful. Having a patient, trained volunteer walk someone through the process provides immense emotional relief. Commitment to Learning: These volunteers undergo rigorous training and testing every single year to stay certified with the IRS. It’s a serious time commitment for the sake of helping their community. Fun Fact: Most Tax-Aide volunteers are often retired professionals from all walks of life who simply want to give back. These volunteers along with the FiftyNorth receptionists work together to make this important service happen.
Used-A-Bit volunteers needed now! We recycle donated goods and keep them out of the landfill, assist customers looking for affordable housewares, enjoy time with a great group of volunteers, and offer flexible scheduling. All proceeds support FiftyNorth, Northfield senior center. To learn more, pick up a volunteer form at the store (624 Water St. South) or email deb.olien@fiftynorth.org.

MAY — A MARRIAGE AT SEA JUNE —HOW TO AGE by Sophie Elmhirst DISGRACEFULLY by Clare Pooley
Photos from April's LIVE event at St. Olaf
JULY —THE LAND OF DREAMS by Vidar Sundstol
AUGUST — RIVER OF THE GODS by Candice Millard
Maurice and Maralyn make an odd couple. He’s a loner, awkward and obsessive; she’s charismatic and ambitious. But they share a horror of wasting their lives. And they dream – as we all dream – of running away from it all. What if they quit their jobs, sold their house, bought a boat, and sailed away? Most of us begin and end with the daydream. But in June 1972, Maurice and Maralyn set sail. For nearly a year all went well, until deep in the Pacific, a breaching whale knocked a hole in their boat and it sank beneath the waves. What ensues is a jaw-dropping fight to survive in the wild ocean, with little hope of rescue. Alone together for months in a tiny rubber raft, starving and exhausted, Maurice and Maralyn have to find not only ways to stay alive but ways to get along, as their inner demons emerge and their marriage is put to the greatest of tests. Although they could run away from the world, they can’t run away from themselves. Taut, propulsive, and dazzling, A Marriage at Sea pairs an adrenaline-fueled high seas adventure with a gutting love story that asks why we love difficult people, and who we become under the most extreme conditions imaginable.
