FIFTY MORE YEARS

ere we are in the midst of a very busy Season of Celebration, honoring 50 years of FiftyNorth with a full calendar of fun. Together, we celebrate five decades of connection, inspiration and learning, and look forward to 50 more years of thriving. As I write, I’ve been on the job for 60 very full working days, but I am in love with this organization. And who isn’t? To know FiftyNorth is to love it. More than 2500 people in greater Northfield show up to connect, engage, learn and grow with FiftyNorth. Where else can you find a group of people more dedicated to being together? The secret to human thriving is connection– we are better together, and FiftyNorth is a place where we find joy, strength, and belonging day after day. FiftyNorth members show up to share life, and we find purpose in caring for one another. This is a rare and special antidote to a world that can create isolation, apathy, and hopelessness. When you walk in the FiftyNorth door, you literally feel the love.

“You know what? This right here is the best coffee table in the city! I learn so much from these people every single day.” —Robert

FiftyNorth is a storied organization with a long history of wellbeing service to the community. Community leadership, collaboration, and partnership created FiftyNorth, and community relationships make the magic possible today. Our spring gallery show, A Half Century of Service, charts the evolution of FiftyNorth from a small basement card group, to a founding member of the Northfield Community Resource Center, and on to the vibrant organization we know today, serving around 28% of people north of 50 in greater Northfield. Today, FiftyNorth shares the NCRC city building with a host of highimpact social service organizations including The Community Action Center and Foodshelf, United Way, Healthy Community Initiative, Headstart, and the Library. Partnership is a strong part of our history, and a key component of our future. And what does the future hold for FiftyNorth? The answer is possibility! FiftyNorth has the potential to serve more people, with more wellbeing programming, in the kind of facility our members deserve. Citizens north of 50 contribute experience, wisdom, and wealth to greater Northfield. We believe folks 50 and up deserve an experience that honors and amplifies their contributions to the community. For the last year and a half, FiftyNorth and the YMCA of Northfield have explored partnership in-depth,

and in April 2026, our organizations made the exciting decision to proceed with an intensive period of due diligence to confirm our potential to merge. We are giving serious consideration to joining forces to serve our community with comprehensive and shared wellbeing services. We are calling this joint endeavor, Community For Life. With the YMCA’s experience in serving youth and families, and FiftyNorth’s expertise in working with people north of 50, we believe that, like our members, we will be even better together. What does “better together” look like? Well, we really need your help to figure that out, but right now we envision shared facilities, with distinct, and, in some cases, separate spaces and programming for older adults and younger people. FiftyNorth could maintain name and mission, continuing to serve older adults with dedicated social, fitness and learning spaces. We’d keep providing fitness, community and event programming aimed at our special demographic, but we would legally become part of the YMCA. In this scenario, everyone would be a YMCA member, but only older members would have access to FiftyNorth facilities and programming. We would keep our identity and affinity for healthy aging, and team-up with the Y to provide the best wellbeing services for all. Why join forces? We’re interested in building a better tomorrow together, and we want to be here for the long haul. Today, community-serving nonprofits have a better chance of thriving if they team-up. In 2025, nearly 20% of nonprofits across the nation merged, with an estimated 50% considering a merger in subsequent years. Operational costs are high, it’s tough to recruit and retain staff, and, with dwindling federal support, there is steep competition for foundation, grant, and donor funding. We believe that joining forces could reduce our costs by sharing operations, help us recruit, retain and diversify staff, and really amplify our ability to raise the funds needed to create and maintain the best services and facilities.

“It’s about connection, and motivation. Marilyn gets in the pool, I go for a walk. And we get to socialize– that’s really important– connecting with other people is a quality of life thing.” —Gordon continued 

FiftyNorth 2025 Annual Report

The YMCA is 175-years-old this year, with over 2000 Ys supporting over 20 million people in the USA. In terms of stability, you really couldn’t ask for a better non-profit partner in a joint venture. FiftyNorth has 5 decades of proven experience working directly with the core citizenry of Northfield. We are a destination senior center, with a reputation for providing relevant, accessible, and exciting programming in a vibrant community of older adults. We know how to create community, and the YMCA of Northfield recognizes, values, and welcomes our expertise. Over the next 10 years, Northfield’s 65+ age group will grow the most– some projections estimate by at least 15%, if not 20%. Our shared goal is to co-create a Community For Life that can serve older adults, and anyone at any stage of life in greater Northfield.

“Now here’s the thing: This job and this place? This is my social time. I need this.” — Bonnie

hy is FiftyNorth embracing this potential change now? Sustainability is the answer. FiftyNorth expenses are higher than our revenue. This has been true for some time. In 2025, we had a 276K operating loss. Fortunately, we have established and stewarded financial investments. These financial investments cover the gap between our expenses and our revenue. However, this isn’t a great long term solution. When I was hired, I understood that one of my top priorities was to address FiftyNorth’s financial health, and shrink the gap between our costs and revenue. Ideally, we find a path to break even, and save investments for endowment growth, special projects, or innovation. Joining forces with the YMCA could allow us to increase our impact and capacity, while sharing operational expenses and expertise. Together, we could increase membership, fundraising, and scholarships. We can prioritize access for all, AND pursue improved facilities. Will it be easy? No. We’ll have to work hard to co-create the future and fundraise together– but, just like the rest of life, it could be easier, and more rewarding, than going it alone. Can FiftyNorth go it alone? Going it alone is certainly possible, but might be the tougher path for FiftyNorth. When I joined the organization in late January, I produced a 22 page audit of the organization in my first 30 days. This was a wonderful exercise and it gave me, our team, the board, and our membership an opportunity to pause and look at our current operational health. We dug into historic and 2025 data, then we created a SWOT to assess our current Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats using our 2025 actuals.

What emerges is a clearer picture of FiftyNorth needs, and possible solutions. Partnership with the Northfield YMCA may be the most effective solution to build on our strengths, address our needs, reduce our risk, and allow us to serve the community better, faster. Here is a brief rundown of partnership potential:  FiftyNorth has a long and successful history of engaging older adults through fitness, social

connection, and learning; our many programs are innovative and relevant to our special population; we have a strong core membership, and a stellar reputation in greater Northfield  FiftyNorth can bring members, expertise, volunteers, community trust and donors to the YMCA, helping us deepen wellbeing impact and broaden reach together

 FiftyNorth excels in community programming and events

 The YMCA can benefit from our well-rounded approach to wellbeing and our emphasis on social connection and belonging  FiftyNorth has a long and successful history of partnering with other nonprofits and businesses to

strengthen our programming and funding in service of our mission

 FiftyNorth can bring more community partners and relationships to YMCA operations for the benefit of more people in our community  FiftyNorth staff are dedicated, hard-working, and they bring a people-first, member-centric ethic and

mindset to all they do

 FiftyNorth can deepen the YMCA’s bench, and join them in a tradition of excellent customer service for older adults  FiftyNorth has a healthy investment portfolio and has established an endowment

 Together, FiftyNorth and the YMCA can showcase these assets to provide a compelling fundraising case for responsible financial stewardship  FiftyNorth is operating in an aging, rented city facility with increasing rent and significant deferred

maintenance; we are making capital improvements to a facility that we do not own

 Joining forces with the YMCA could provide a path to share operations and own our facilities, with the capacity and control to invest in our own planning, improvements, and maintenance as one stronger organization  FiftyNorth insurance reimbursement rates are very low and we have little bargaining power because

we are small

 As a national nonprofit, the YMCA’s insurance reimbursement rates are higher and their bargaining power is much greater  FiftyNorth membership structure is too complex, over 50% of our members are under-utilizing our

programs, and we are challenged to recruit members in the 50-60 age demographic

 Teaming up with the Y could allow FiftyNorth to implement a reliable, simplified, and productive membership structure, improve our value proposition, and provide us with a built-in membership pipeline continued 

FiftyNorth 2025 Annual Report

“Do what you want to do. Don’t wait. Life is for living!” —Lin  FiftyNorth would like to be able to offer more membership scholarships to more people, but we have

an operating loss

 The YMCA is dedicated to wellbeing for all; they have a track record of breaking even operationally and fundraising to provide scholarships to any member in need; they share our goal of financial sustainability  FiftyNorth operational systems and platforms are outdated and in-need of pricey updating and

investment

 YMCA operational systems are some of the strongest in the nonprofit wellness sector, migrating to and sharing solid systems could reduce expenses and allow us to keep pace with innovation with little up front cost  FiftyNorth operations are spread across a complex array of vendors and services

 Sharing operations with the YMCA would allow us to streamline services, reduce costs, and gain operational bandwidth  FiftyNorth does not have an HR function or offer employees health insurance

 FiftyNorth employees would become Y employees; the Y provides employee health insurance, and the most competitive retirement benefits in the nonprofit sector  FiftyNorth does not have a paid fundraising role

 We could share fundraising and marketing roles with the YMCA  Going it alone, FiftyNorth would face significant fundraising competition

 With the Y, we could fundraise together, and attract foundation and major donor money with the shared and deepened Community for Life value proposition  Alone, FiftyNorth faces competition for members

 With the Y, we could enjoy a built in membership pipeline, and we could recruit together

e have a lot of work to do to understand if our Community For Life vision is viable. We will co-create and review operational, financial, governance, and strategic plans. We will also leverage respective legal services to negotiate terms, evaluate risk, and outline steps to a legal merge. We are investing in a period of due diligence between now and August 2026 because we feel that merging represents the least risk and highest potential for FiftyNorth today. Time and effort will tell if this is in fact the best way forward for FiftyNorth. With or without the YMCA, FiftyNorth will continue to thrive. We will continue to bring members together to connect and engage for wellbeing. We are providing a vital service in a very special community, and we’re in it for the long haul. I’m humbled to serve on the FiftyNorth team and work as hard as I can on behalf of this very special community. Thank you to all FiftyNorth members– you show me, every day, in every way, how to show up for one another and lead with heart.

Please join me in applauding the many achievements of our hardworking and dedicated employees, board, and volunteers. In 2025, the FiftyNorth team served 2,540 people across 115,918 visits. We served 1,917 members with 3920 fitness classes and over 150 programs, trips and events. Board member, and now 50th Committee Chair, Kay Brown, along with a band of intrepid staff, trustees, volunteers, generous donors and grantors raised more than 325K in 2025. Thanks to their commitment, we granted more than 97 scholarships. Patty Ciernia and Michelle Brant not only delivered 100 community programs, they supported 38 events and created the runway for what is today one very exciting Season of Celebration. Craig Swenson and our fitness team delivered about 80 classes per week. Used-A-Bit Manager, Fermin Notario Ponce, along with Assistant Manager, Deb Olien, not only transformed our retail space, they earned FiftyNorth 45K, and paved the way for an E-bay operation that is now in full swing. And Elaine Meyers, our very helpful, very patient, and very organized Membership Manager, along with her front desk wonder women, served those 2,540 participants and 1917 members with warmth, compassion and enthusiasm. 195 volunteers made all of this FiftyNorth magic possible with their time, talent and hard work. A very special thanks to Interim Executive Director, Carla Johnson, who put her shoulder to our wheel for 6 months, and brought FiftyNorth operations into a new generation of operational strength. With the support of Board Chair, Kathie Taranto, Carla executed many large projects, including creating an operational budget and drafting an Employee Handbook. I am grateful that I inherited my role from the best (and smartest) on-boarding manager in history!
