Happy August! It’s been a jam-packed month here at FiftyNorth, and we’ve engaged in a flurry of communication about our potential merger. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your important questions and engagement.
FiftyNorth is for you, the members, and we are the stewards of the time and money you invest here too-- we take this role very seriously. On behalf of the management team, we would like to thank our members for your earnest conversation about FiftyNorth’s future. A special thank you goes out to the intrepid members who took the time to go to Wausau, Wisconsin this month to see a senior center at a YMCA in action at The Landing. Your curiosity, thoughtful questions and open mindset really set the tone for a fun learning adventure. Thanks for taking almost 12 hours out of your day to explore this model with us. Thanks also to the Mayor, who joined us that day.
We also owe a big thank you to our City Administrator, Ben Martig, and our City Finance Director, Brenda Angelstad, for leaning in hard with me and Tyler Powell (Northfield YMCA CEO) to tackle FiftyNorth’s future NCRC rent. Ben and Brenda are very supportive of our potential merger, and are committed to helping us find mutually sustainable NCRC rent solutions for our future. The Mayor, Ben, and Brenda see our potential collaboration as an important long-term wellbeing benefit to the people of greater Northfield, especially seniors. We are working together with some pretty tight deadlines, and we really appreciate the City’s timely and earnest support.
Thanks also to the volunteers who are helping us put on the Will Healy Over And Back show this September 26 to honor 50 years of FiftyNorth. We are excited to partner with Will to bring Over And Back to the stage for this fun evening of community and impact. Tickets are on sale for members only until August 6, then open to the general public. The proceeds will help us reach our 250K fundraising goal for 2026. If you can, please consider purchasing the $50 “gift ticket” option, as $25 dollars of this ticket goes straight to our 2026 fundraising goal.

All my pottery is from my time at Stout. I have Stoneware, Raku, and Porcelain pieces. While there I set up the Porcelain Studio at Stout and was a teacher’s assistant for several semesters. Hand building, pottery wheel thrown and a combination of both modes of construction were used in my work. Glaze Calculation class was perfect to formulate glazes, and the use of different chemicals were used to make different colors in glazes and stains. I always wanted to continue my pottery work after college, but my career as a designer, life and kids took priority.

“On Horizon’s Brim” is truly the culmination of my artistic career...a dream that began way back in 1970 when I arrived on the HILL to teach Sculpture and the History of Architecture. I had more fun, truly FUN, teaching how to weld metal, cast bronze, fire ceramics, and explore visual cultures around the world by teaching “Monuments to Power and Faith.”
Now I’m looking forward...Mac

For retirees who’ve accumulated significant savings in their tax-deferred accounts, the onset of required minimum distributions (RMDs) at age 73 or 75 depending on your birth year, can have serious tax consequences. That’s because the higher the balance in your tax-deferred accounts, the higher your RMDs and potentially your tax bracket. If charitable giving is part of your financial plan, a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) can further your philanthropic goals and may help reduce the tax hit from your RMD. Join Pat for a friendly, easy-to-understand session about tax-smart giving using your IRA.

Since June of 2025, they been instrumental in creating FiftyNorth’s “Season of Celebration” for our 50 th year. It started with the wonderful gallery show in April that captured 50 years of our history, moved into “Five Courses for the 50th”, and then the fun “Family Festival” in June.
September 26 will be our last event, Will Healy and “Over and Back” to end our celebration with a great concert.
The committee has worked countless hours to create these events. Along the way we have experienced comradery and the joy of completing successful events. As chair, I have been privileged to work with these dedicated volunteers.
With a grateful thank you, Kay Brown — FiftyNorth 50th Anniversary Chair and Board Member

And the Trips Survey Says…
The FiftyNorth Travel Committee spent a morning chatting with folks out in the lobby asking members their preferences for destinations for day trips. Members were also asked to fill out a survey. Staying local emerged as the clear favorite among participants. We are going to choose a restaurant or event at a nearby location, in addition to our longer distance day trip offerings. Join us for a bite to eat at a local restaurant, a play at the Guild, or a concert or game at one of the colleges. It’s an opportunity to have some social time with FiftyNorth friends and enjoy all that the Northfield and nearby communities have to offer. The committee decided to call these adventures Town & Around. Transportation will be on your own.
The Travel Committee is also exploring other options for less expensive transportation. The coach buses are nice, but they also drive up the cost of the trips. Don’t be surprised if the van from the Y or a Benjamin School Bus is your chariot for the day. It’s a cash vs comfort type of thing. We’ll try it and see if we like it. Give us your feedback.

PERSONAL TRAINING AT FIFTYNORTH
FiftyNorth provides some of the best personal trainers. Our dedicated Personal Trainers Ingrid Freeman, Lucy Lou, Brent Betterly and Craig Swenson are able to adapt your fitness and health needs to help you achieve your shortterm and long-term goals.
Many people shy away from personal training because they are afraid that they need to come in every week or multiple times a week. This is not always true. You can choose when and how you meet with a trainer.
As a trainer of over 10 years, I see many of my clients monthly or every three months for check-ins. The check-ins ensure that the client continues to meet their goals, adapting to any health or life changes that may have occurred since the last time we met, and that the exercises are progressively advancing to keep the body challenged and promote continued improvement, ensuring progression rather than regression.
How do you meet with a trainer at FiftyNorth? We have contact information for our trainers at the front desk and on our website. You would contact the personal trainer directly to set up a time and date that works best for you to meet. At this initial meeting the trainer will go over health history, goals, current situations and what they can offer as a trainer.
How do I choose who will be best for me? You can call or email Craig Swenson who will work through your situation and goals to find the best suited trainer for you.
When can I start training? Why not start today by contacting a trainer or contacting Craig Swenson to learn more and take the first steps towards your better health, better movement and stronger mindset.
