As FIDICâs newly elected president, and the first ever from Italy, I am delighted and proud to be writing these introductory words to our member associations in the sixth issue of our membersâ newsletter, Membership MAtters. Since being elected as your new president at the FIDIC GAM in Cape Town, I have been struck by the warmth of the response I have received from member associations and the wider industry.
As I said in my acceptance speech in Cape Town, it really is an honour to represent this brilliant industry organisation on a global scale and I feel extremely fortunate and honoured to have the opportunity to serve my profession and the industry through FIDIC. I have worked and volunteered in the consulting engineering industry for more than 30 years, gaining wide experience in architectural, infrastructural design and project management. As a civil engineer and the co-founder, chairman and senior director of the leading Italian firm 3TI PROGETTI, I am totally familiar with and experience daily the many challenges facing our industry. These are challenges that I know that FIDIC and its member associations helps their member firms address.
As we embark on a new board year that will see the start of the implementation of FIDICâs new strategic plan, Engineering a bright future, together, I can tell you that myself and the entire board are fully focused on implementing a strategy that sets out our vision for the years ahead and will position FIDIC right where it needs to be â as a key player in the global engineering, construction

and infrastructure industry and one which always works hard on representing its member associations. You, our members, are central to that plan and by scanning the environment in which we operate and testing ideas through workshops, we have developed what we believe is a robust plan that provides clear guidance for the next five years.
Our member associations are the lifeblood of FIDIC. Under my leadership, we will always work to strengthen the key role that FIDIC plays in representing, advocating and supporting its MAs and their firms. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible over the next two years of my term as president â so please keep reaching out to me and letting me know how I and we can serve you better and make a difference to your work.
Letâs all engineer that brighter future, together!
Best wishes,
Alfredo Ingletti President, FIDIC

September in Cape Town saw FIDICâs member associations sit down together to discuss some of the key challenges and opportunities that they face. Here, Helen Davidson, the chair of FIDICâs directors and secretariesâ advisory council, reflects on the meeting and its deliberations.
âKultwanoâ, meaning togetherness or unity in the Setswana language, was the name we gave to my table workshopping current challenges and opportunities in the consulting engineering sector at the recent FIDIC member associations (or DNS) forum in Cape Town and it is also the perfect description for what it felt like to be in a room full of FIDICâs member association leaders from across the globe. The DNS forum precedes the FIDIC Global Infrastructure Conference every year and is an opportunity for the leaders of FIDICâs global network of member associations to come together to share knowledge and build relationships that will help us grow and thrive collectively.
This year the forum started with a morning centred around the themes of âLeading Together and âGrowing Togetherâ. We discussed whatâs happening in each of our regions, finding the points of commonality in our challenges and opportunities and we shared knowledge across a range of hot topics for our member associations including attracting talent, effective advocacy, effective

governance and member engagement and volunteer management, as part of the âsoft launchâ of our new Member Association Toolkit. In the afternoon we went global, looking more closely at how FIDIC can support its member associations to uplift and advance consulting engineering across the world.
My key takeaways were that while we may be separated by borders, we are united in the challenges we face locally â price pressures and late payments, unstable governance and political influence or interference, the pace of change, our future workforce and funding and financing. As systems thinkers, itâs the opportunities that unite and inspire us as a global collective of member associations. To take a leadership role and bring a clear, bold and informed voice to the table â better communicating the value of consulting engineers, supporting capability development within consulting engineering firms and in client intelligence, building trusting relationships across the supply chain, utilising new technologies and leaning into the human elements of all that we do.
My cup was so full hearing about activities member associations from all around the world are doing to tirelessly face into these challenges and opportunities every day and in learning from them. I am excited for the year ahead for the DNS Advisory Council to distil what we heard and to use it to inform our role in supporting FIDIC. Together we are so much stronger, and opportunities to get together like this for the open and honest exchange of ideas are imperative. Thank you to everyone involved in planning, leading and participating in this day together â I look forward to next year in Delhi!

A reminder that the new FIDIC Member Association Toolkit was âsoft launchedâ recently during our annual Global Infrastructure Conference in Cape Town. The toolkit offers practical guidance and resources to uplift the capability of all FIDICâs member associations and covers topics from developing your member value proposition, to governance, drafting your constitution, membership fee models, sponsorship strategy, harnessing AI and getting the best out of your volunteers. Itâs all about sharing knowledge and best practice so that, together, we are building a stronger global engineering and consulting sector no matter where we are starting from.

European consultancy federation EFCA has published an autumn barometer report on the state of consulting engineering in Europe. The EFCA Market Index has risen by 1.2 points, pointing to a slightly more positive outlook than in spring 2025. More than half of the participating countries report stable or improving market conditions, reflecting a gradual normalisation after several years of volatility. Order books remain exceptionally strong, with an average of 10.2 months of secured work, close to the post-pandemic peak. Profitability continues to hold firm and while easing slightly compared to 2023, the European average of 7.0% remains significantly above long-term trends. Commenting on the report, Henrik Garver, chair of EFCAâs economic environment committee and the CEO of the Danish Association of Consulting Engineers, said: âWith clear signs of market stabilisation and sustained activity in core sectors such as energy and transport/infrastructure, the European consulting engineering industry continues to demonstrate resilience.â
