ART & ART HISTORY The Bayeux Tapestry $27 / $32 October 9 at 3pm – 4:30pm, Friday GL8889 – Moorings Park Grande Lake (South Naples) Speaker: Ken Nesbitt The Bayeux Tapestry is a remarkable example of medieval art and a unique historical artifact. The Tapestry tells the story of the main events leading up to and including the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. From the reign of English King Edward the Confessor to the Norman victory at the battle of Hastings, the tapestry itself (actually an embroidery) blends Norman styles and Anglo-Saxon art into a sequential narrative and a clever piece of propaganda about William the Conqueror’s great victory. In this presentation we review this important time in medieval history, investigate the history through the key scenes in the tapestry, and address some of the mysteries in the tapestry’s images that remain unsolved.

she moved through the courts of Europe, supporting not only herself but also her only child. This lecture explores her remarkable career at the court of Louis XVI, her graceful and intimate portraits of royalty, and her ability to shape public images of power, beauty, and status. Apollo 11 carries Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins toward the Moon and delivers humanity’s first footsteps on another world. Apollo 13 begins as another voyage of exploration, then becomes a desperate struggle for survival when an explosion cripples the spacecraft hundreds of thousands of miles from Earth. Finally, Apollo 17 brings the lunar era to a dramatic close as astronauts spend three remarkable days exploring the Moon before humans leave its surface for the last time. This lecture follows these missions through moments of breathtaking achievement, terrifying uncertainty, ingenious problem-solving, and profound human courage. Our speaker was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work on the Apollo 13 mission.

BIOGRAPHIES Cleopatra: Power, Passion and the Fall of Ancient Egypt $27 / $32 Option #1: October 5 at 2pm – 3:30pm, Monday AG8899 – Aston Gardens at Pelican Marsh (NE Naples) Option #2: November 23 at 10:30am – 12pm, Monday CL8900 – Carlisle of Naples (North Naples) Speaker: John Penuel Cleopatra VII, the last active pharaoh of ancient Egypt, rules during one of the most turbulent periods in Mediterranean history. Forced from power by a family struggle, she forms a daring alliance with Julius Caesar and regains her throne. After Caesar’s assassination, Cleopatra joins forces with the Roman general Mark Antony, creating a powerful political and personal partnership. Egypt’s wealth and strategic importance make Cleopatra a crucial figure in Rome’s growing struggle for supremacy. Her intelligence, ambition and diplomatic skill help preserve Egyptian independence, but they also place her in direct conflict with Octavian, Caesar’s adopted heir. This lecture examines Cleopatra’s rise, her relationships with Caesar and Antony, the naval Battle of Actium and the dramatic events that end her reign and bring ancient Egypt under Roman control.
Alexander the Great: Conquering the Persian Empire $27 / $32 October 8 at 10am – 11:30am, Thursday BV8901 – Bentley Village (North Naples) Speaker: John Penuel Speed, discipline and daring strategy transform Alexander’s Macedonian army into the most powerful military force of the ancient world. This lecture follows his campaigns across Asia Minor, Syria and Mesopotamia, including the battles of Granicus, Issus and Gaugamela and the brutal sieges of Tyre and Gaza. Discover how the sarissa phalanx, Companion cavalry and coordinated battlefield tactics overwhelm the armies of Darius III. The class also examines Alexander’s use of logistics, intelligence, propaganda and claims of divine ancestry. After conquering the Persian heartland, he advances into India, defeats King Porus at the Hydaspes and finally turns back when his exhausted soldiers refuse to continue. His disastrous return through the Gedrosian Desert reveals both his extraordinary determination and dangerous ambition. The lecture concludes by considering Alexander’s unfinished plans and what his conquests reveal about leadership, loyalty and the limits of power.

By autumn 1944, Allied momentum has stalled amid Operation Market Garden and the costly battles of Aachen and the Hürtgen Forest. In November, American and British forces launch Operation Clipper to eliminate the fortified Geilenkirchen salient and open the route toward the Roer River. This lecture examines how Allied infantry, artillery, and specialized tanks confront concrete bunkers, minefields, deep mud, fierce counterattacks, and determined German resistance. The battle produces a limited Allied victory, but not the decisive breakthrough commanders seek.
