Trex Selects Fencing Supply Group as Exclusive National Distributor for Trex Fencing New Agreement Signals Commitment by Both Companies to Aggressively Grow the Composite Fencing Category Trex Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking, railing, and fencing and a leading brand of high-performance outdoor living products has signed a multi-year agreement with Fencing Supply Group (FSG) to become the exclusive national distributor of Trex® Fencing.
without becoming brittle, cracking or blowing out. The high-performance composite offerings are designed to last at least 25 years, surpassing the average life of a wood fence by about 10-15 years. Further, Trex Fencing won't rot, peel or splinter and never needs painting, staining or sealing.
“We are thrilled at this opportunity to expand and evolve our successful distribution relationship with an industry leader like Fencing Supply Group,” says Adam Zambanini, president and CEO of Trex. “Our recently announced strategic plan includes a focus on building out our fencing portfolio by leveraging existing decking extrusion capabilities across our facilities. Fencing is a natural fit with the Trex brand and allows us to further scale the assets we already have in place. FSG is the right distributor partner to help Trex own the backyard from the patio door to the perimeter.”
“Composite fencing is one of the fastest-growing categories in the outdoor living space, and this distribution partnership with Trex accelerates that trajectory in a meaningful way,” says Brett Hankey, CEO of Fencing Supply Group. “FSG’s network of over 80 locations across America gives us the local relationships, inventory reach, and contractor expertise to bring Trex Fencing to market. Together, we're not just distributing a product – we're building the composite fencing category at scale. We're expanding the reach of composite fencing – from residential backyards to commercial properties, HOA communities and beyond. We're grateful to the Trex team for their confidence in FSG and for sharing our vision of what this category can become.”
Trex Fencing is a low-maintenance, highperformance and eco-friendly product that is made to withstand years of sun, sleet and snow 12

Trex Fencing utilizes an interlocking picket design and comes in both a vertical and horizontal orientation. It is also available in a split-rail application, which provides an open, ranch-style look using composite rails and routed posts for fast, clean installs. All Trex Fencing is available in four natural colors and is perfectly framed with matching composite top and bottom rails and posts. “Trex Fencing has been available for nearly two decades but has never had the kind of national distribution that is needed to transform the category,” continues Zambanini. “We believe the composite fencing segment is poised for significant growth driven by Trex and FSG.” Trex Fencing is available nationwide at FSG and other major fencing dealer locations, as well as through special order at home center locations. BIG LEAGUE UPGRADES TAKE SHAPE IN
TORONTO
As the first stadium in the world to feature a fully retractable motorized roof, Rogers Centre has long stood as a landmark of Toronto’s skyline and home to the Toronto Blue Jays. Over the past few years, Sightline Commercial Solutions has helped transform the venue with modern railing systems and premium fan amenities designed to elevate the gameday experience while supporting the stadium’s continued evolution. The project was completed in April of this year. Sightline fabricated and supplied a wide range of custom metal railing solutions throughout the venue, including aisle rail, Track Rail™, decorative wall and floor-mounted handrails, custom metal panel drink rails, platforms, gates and steel dugout rails. The installation also incorporated OptiView™ anti-reflective glass and custom bent floor-mounted handrails, creating clean sightlines and a refined aesthetic that complements the stadium’s modern upgrades while enhancing long-term durability and fan safety.
handrails added further complexity, requiring close coordination between engineering, production and installation teams to keep the project moving efficiently.
With lead times compressed to nearly half of what is typical for projects of this scale, the Sightline team relied heavily on 3D scanning technology and tube laser fabrication to maintain both precision and speed throughout the design, manufacturing and installation phases. The welded and bent floor-mounted
Long-standing relationships with general contractor PCL Canada and architecture firm Populous helped Sightline coordinate execution and keep the upgrades on schedule. The result is a modernized stadium environment that blends premium architectural detailing with enhanced functionality,

TRACKING TRENDS IN FENCING AT THE
SPORTS LEVEL Sports evolve and the facilities that host them continue to change as well, becoming safer, more sophisticated and more sustainable. One key element in that equation is fencing. While chain-link fencing has long been a favorite, it isn’t immune to the forces of change. These days, expect to see chain-link looking anything but standard, thanks to innovations including the following: Padding for Posts, Outfield Fences and Top Rails: Increasingly in baseball and softball, youth travel tournaments, as well as college combines and showcase events are gravitating toward sports facilities that feature foam padding to protect players who want to attempt challenging plays. The thickness of padding varies; however, it must always be sufficient to provide shock absorption and save players from lacerations or other injuries. Protection for Spectators: In baseball and softball, particular attention is being paid to the safety of spectators in areas behind and adjacent to home plate, and to preventing any danger of being hit by batted balls or other unexpected hazards. Protective netting, first seen at the Major League level, has now filtered down to youth sports. Netting may be supported by a series of poles, integrated with a padded backstop and tiebacks, or it may be entirely held up by cables secured to the facility itself. (Hanging netting is also used; this is often found in indoor installations.) Most netting systems are black, which makes them less noticeable and lends itself to a neater appearance. Spectator-Friendly Rail Systems: A new entry into the sports facility market is appearing in onsite bars and restaurants in stadiums and other facilities, particularly those with decks or patios that overlook the game itself. These rail systems are essentially enhancements to the top rails of fencing, allowing spectators to stand and watch the game. Rails are padded for comfort if visitors want to lean on them, and often contain beverage holders and space to put plates of food as well as ports for charging phones and other devices. Court Sport Fencing Configurations: In tennis, as well as in the rapidly growing pickleball market, an alternative to the traditional rectangular court features diagonally cut corners. Eliminating both fencing and surfacing for the unused corners, this type of fencing softens the look of the court and provides an area for landscaping outside the fence.
18
SEPTEMBER 2026 | FENCE NEWS USA
The diagonal corners also deflect balls back toward the center so that players do not have to retrieve them from deep in the corners. Typically, such corners are set at a 45˚ angle from fence to fence for all locations on courts of all sizes. Where two or more courts are installed in a bank, “Vs” are used between courts. This configuration also may be useful to maintain maximum court size on smaller sites or on sites with buildings or other obstructions. Fence-Mounted Sound Deflectors: Acoustics are a running concern in outdoor court sports installations, particularly those near residential areas. As a result, multiple manufacturers have developed sound-absorbing panels that can be mounted on fencing without making changes to the fence itself. (In fact, USA Pickleball, the sport’s governing body, has a list of noise-dampening equipment, known as Quiet Products, and some of these types of products are among those that can be found on that list.) Hybrid Fence Systems: Padel, a court sport that is growing in the USA, is played across a net on a facility approximately one-third the size of a tennis court. The unique aspect of padel is that the court is surrounded by glass on the ends and a combination of glass and wire mesh on the sides. Courts are entered via openings on either side of the net; this is essential, since players will often chase balls out of the court and hit them back in. Padel courts are sold and delivered in kit form; it is recommended that professional court builders oversee installations, since the glass panels are heavy and require construction equipment to move them into place. Another unusual aspect of these courts is that often, the lighting is integrated into the sides of the court itself, unlike many other sports where lighting is an entirely separate element. The American Sports Builders Association (ASBA), the national non-profit organization for designers, builders and suppliers of materials for athletic facilities, tracks trends regarding sports venues themselves. It also sponsors informative meetings, publishes a quarterly magazine, books and technical construction guidelines for athletic facilities, produces a mobile app containing diagrams of sports facilities and keeps its members aware of the latest developments in the industry. SHADE STRUCTURES HELP BASEBALL FACILITIES BEAT THE
HEAT From youth league diamonds to collegiate ballparks and tournament complexes, baseball is played under the open sky, and often under intense summer sun. While players, coaches and fans expect to spend hours at the field, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays and extreme heat can affect comfort, safety and the overall gameday experience. Purpose-built shade structures offer a practical solution while enhancing the appearance and functionality of sports facilities. "Today's sports facilities are expected to deliver more than a great playing surface," says Todd LaVigne, owner and CEO of PalmSHIELD, the industry leader in architectural louvered and mechanical equipment screen fencing for both ground and rooftop installations. "They need to provide a comfortable experience for athletes, families and spectators. Shade structures help facilities accomplish that while creating an attractive, professional look."
20
SEPTEMBER 2026 | FENCE NEWS USA
Commercial shade structures can be installed throughout a baseball complex, from bleachers and grandstands to dugouts, bullpen areas, concession lines and walkways. By creating cooler gathering spaces, facilities can encourage spectators to stay longer, improve comfort for players waiting to take the field and provide relief for concession workers and event staff. PalmSHIELD designs custom shade structures tailored to each facility rather than relying on standard, off-the-shelf products. Structures can be engineered to fit existing site conditions while accommodating lighting, power, retractable canopies and custom colors that complement a team's branding or the facility's architecture. "Every ballpark is different," says LaVigne. "Sightlines, field layout, available space and aesthetics all play a role. Our custom approach allows owners to install shade exactly where it's needed without compromising the functionality of the facility." Durability is another important consideration. Baseball facilities require products that can withstand years of exposure to sun, wind and rain while holding up to the demands of busy
sports venues. PalmSHIELD's rust-resistant steel structures are designed for long-term performance with minimal maintenance, helping owners maximize their investment. Beyond comfort, shade structures can also improve a facility's marketability. A shaded grandstand, bullpen or concession area creates a more welcoming environment for tournaments, league play and special events. When paired with coordinated colors and architectural styling, these structures become a visible enhancement that contributes to the overall image of the complex. "When facilities invest in amenities that improve the experience for everyone, people notice," adds LaVigne. "Comfortable spectators stay longer, athletes have better places to prepare and operators have a venue they're proud to showcase." Whether covering bleachers, protecting dugouts or creating shaded gathering spaces around concession areas, shade structures have become an increasingly valuable addition to baseball complexes of every size. By combining custom design, durability and visual appeal, they help facilities create a safer, more comfortable environment for players, coaches and fans alike. Learn more at palmshieldlouvers.com.

BRANDED WINDSCREEN DELIVERS
CHAMPIONSHIP LOOK AT SOFTBALL STADIUM
WORLD CLASS
With the world's attention turning toward Oklahoma City as the future home of softball during the 2028 Summer Olympics, Devon Park is already setting the standard for premier softball venues.
Oklahoma City and USA Softball branding on a vibrant blue background, creating a clean, professional backdrop that reinforces the stadium's identity from every angle.
Home to the NCAA Women's College World Series, the Oklahoma City Spark professional softball team, the USA Softball Hall of Fame and USA Softball headquarters, Devon Park welcomes thousands of athletes and fans each year. As one of the sport's most recognizable facilities, stadium leaders wanted an outfield appearance that matched the caliber of play on the field.
"Facilities like Devon Park deserve products that perform as well as they look," says Gerr Hackett, regional representative of COVERMASTER®. "Our goal was to create a windscreen that not only enhances the fan experience but also reinforces the venue's brand with bold, vibrant graphics that stand up to the demands of a championship facility."
To achieve a more polished, consistent look while showcasing the venue's identity, Devon Park selected COVERMASTER® to provide a fully customized branded windscreen solution along the outfield fence. Because visual branding was the primary objective, COVERMASTER® recommended a premium digitally printed windscreen capable of reproducing high-definition, full-color graphics while maintaining the durability and wind reduction expected from commercial-grade windscreen products. More than 4,000 square feet of custom COVERMASTER® windscreen was produced for the project. The material was digitally printed with
The completed installation transformed the outfield perimeter into a visually striking feature while helping unify the overall appearance of the stadium. The branded windscreen creates an attractive television backdrop for nationally televised events, enhances sponsor and venue visibility, and provides the finished look expected at one of the world's premier softball complexes. As sports venues continue investing in facility upgrades, custom-branded windscreens are becoming an increasingly popular way to combine functionality with marketing value. In addition to reducing wind and improving field aesthetics, they provide schools, municipalities and professional facilities with opportunities to showcase team branding, sponsors and event identities. "Today's sports facilities want more than a standard windscreen," adds Hackett. "They're looking for products that become part of the venue's identity. Digital printing allows us to create customized, functional solutions that help facilities make a lasting impression on athletes, fans and visitors alike. Learn more at covermaster.com.

NETTING SYSTEMS: ENHANCING SAFETY, VISIBILITY AND
PERFORMANCE AT ATHLETIC FACILITIES At athletic facilities, balls leaving the field of play can put spectators, players, vehicles, buildings and adjacent fields at risk. Properly designed tensioned netting and field netting help contain play while preserving the visibility that is essential to the spectator experience. Netting systems are used at baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, football, field hockey and multipurpose facilities, but their design must reflect the specific sport and site. Net height, mesh size, material, pole placement, cable layout, foundations, anticipated loads and required coverage all contribute to the effectiveness of the finished system. “Tensioned netting systems are more than a safety feature. They are an important component of modern athletic infrastructure, providing reliable protection while supporting the functionality and long-term use of the spaces they serve,” says Stephen Falck, director of outdoor construction at Jaypro Sports. For decades, chain-link fencing has been widely used around athletic fields. It remains practical for defining perimeters, controlling access and creating rigid barriers. In spectator areas, however, its posts, rails and wire mesh can interrupt the view of the field. Properly selected dark netting is generally less visually prominent because spectators tend to focus through it, helping preserve visibility for fans, photographers, cameras and facility staff.
24
SEPTEMBER 2026 | FENCE NEWS USA
At baseball and softball fields, tensioned backstop netting may extend behind home plate and along dugouts or seating areas exposed to foul balls. Soccer, lacrosse, football and field hockey facilities often use ball-stop netting behind goals or end lines to help prevent balls from entering walkways, parking areas, neighboring fields or other occupied spaces. Indoors, divider netting can separate simultaneous activities while allowing coaches and staff to maintain visibility across the facility. The performance of any netting installation depends on the entire system, not only the net itself. Poles, cables, hardware, anchors and foundations must work together to maintain tension and support anticipated loads. Pole height and spacing, wind exposure, soil conditions, nearby structures and applicable building requirements can all influence the final design. Depending on the system and location, lowering or removing the netting during severe weather or seasonal shutdowns may also be part of proper operation. Early coordination is especially important when netting must be integrated with fencing, gates, bleachers, dugouts, lighting, wall padding or windscreen. Designers and contractors should also consider maintenance access, the movement of field equipment and the possibility that the facility will support more than one sport. Through its work with contractors, architects, schools, parks and athletic organizations,
Jaypro Sports has found that successful netting projects begin with a clear understanding of the facility rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. When designed for the sport, site and intended use, a netting system can preserve visibility while improving ball containment, protecting surrounding areas and fitting naturally into the facility. Learn more at jayprosports.com.
CUSTOM BATTING CAGE NETTING FOR BASEBALL & SOFTBALLFACILITIES From community parks and schools to collegiate athletic complexes and professional training facilities, batting cage systems play a critical role in creating safe, efficient practice environments. Whether used for batting tunnels, divider curtains, backstop protection, or overhead containment, properly engineered netting helps contain highvelocity balls, protect athletes and spectators, and maximize available space.
Adding batting cages can transform a traditional sports complex into a more versatile training destination. By creating dedicated practice areas, facilities can support individual skill development, team preparation, private instruction, and yearround training while making more efficient use of existing space. This added functionality allows sports complexes to expand their offerings and provide greater value to athletes, coaches, and the surrounding community. “Because every facility is different, batting cage netting should be designed to fit the application, not the other way around,” explains Tammy Raymond with InCord. InCord provides custom-fabricated netting systems tailored to the exact dimensions, layout, and performance requirements of each project. “Whether the goal is to create multiple training lanes, install retractable batting tunnels, or protect adjacent walkways and spectator areas, each solution is engineered to integrate seamlessly into the facility,” she adds. Custom batting cage netting applications include: • Batting tunnels for baseball and softball training • Divider curtains to create multiple practice lanes • Backstop netting for player and spectator protection • Overhead containment systems to keep balls within designated areas • Retractable netting systems for flexible, multiuse facilities
• Indoor and outdoor training environments for year-round use Batting cages provide a safe, controlled environment where athletes can develop their skills through consistent repetition while protecting coaches, spectators, adjacent playing areas, and facility infrastructure from errant balls. Custom netting systems allow facilities to maximize available space by creating flexible practice areas that accommodate a variety of baseball and softball activities.
allow facilities to accommodate multiple users simultaneously, increase operational flexibility, and create safer environments for athletes, coaches, and spectators. With application-specific engineering and custom fabrication, InCord delivers batting cage systems that perform reliably while meeting the unique requirements of every installation.” Learn more at incord.com.
Constructed from premium UVstabilized, moistureresistant materials, InCord batting cage netting is designed to withstand repeated impacts from baseballs and softballs while maintaining longterm performance in both indoor and outdoor environments. Precision fabrication ensures consistent sizing, clean installation and dependable containment throughout years of use. “Beyond the netting itself, thoughtful design can improve the functionality of an entire training space,” says Raymond. “Custom configurations

LEADS TO EXTRA SAFETY EXTRA PADDINGON THE FIELDS New NCAA Baseball and Softball Padding Rules
College baseball and softball facilities across the country have until January 1, 2027, to comply with new NCAA requirements designed to better protect athletes from collisions with hard surfaces. The rule changes require protective padding on exposed brick, concrete, wood and other rigid surfaces surrounding the field, including backstops, dugouts, railings and fencing. The new standards require padding to begin no more than one foot above the ground and extend to six feet high, or the top of the structure if it is shorter. The goal is simple: reduce the risk of injury when players collide with hard surfaces during high-speed plays. "The NCAA's new requirements reinforce what facility owners and coaches have always known—player safety has to come first," says Heidi Claeys with Douglas Sports. "Properly padded surfaces can make a significant difference when an athlete crashes into a fence or railing while making a play." The rule changes were approved following a review of injury data by the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports. Research has shown that college baseball and softball players experience higher injury rates than their high school counterparts, with collisions against hard surfaces contributing to concussions, fractures and other serious injuries.

For facility managers, the deadline provides an opportunity to evaluate existing fields and develop a plan for compliance. Areas requiring attention may include outfield walls, backstops, dugout railings, foul territory fencing and other exposed structures throughout the venue. Douglas Sports offers a complete lineup of protective padding designed to help schools meet the new NCAA standards. Its custom wall padding is available for outfield fences, backstops and masonry walls, while guard rail pads protect dugout fencing and exposed top rails. The company also manufactures custom padding solutions for virtually any hard surface, allowing facilities to match unique dimensions, colors and graphics while maintaining a professional appearance.

Beyond reducing the severity of impacts, protective padding also gives athletes greater confidence to play aggressively without unnecessary concern about the surrounding infrastructure.
"Every facility is different, which is why custom-fit padding is so important," says Claeys. "Whether it's an outfield wall, a concrete backstop or dugout railing, we can provide padding that delivers both the protection athletes need and the professional look facilities want." All Douglas Sports padding is manufactured in the United States using high-quality materials engineered to withstand years of outdoor exposure while maintaining impact protection. The durable construction, weather-resistant finishes and custom fabrication options make the products suitable for collegiate, high school and municipal sports facilities alike. "With the 2027 deadline approaching, now is the time for schools to begin planning," adds Heidi. "By evaluating facilities early, budgeting for improvements and scheduling installation during the offseason, athletic departments can avoid last-minute projects while ensuring they're ready to meet the new NCAA requirements."
As colleges continue investing in safer athletic facilities, the NCAA's new padding requirements represent another step toward reducing preventable injuries while allowing players to compete with confidence. For contractors and facility managers, the coming months present an opportunity to upgrade existing venues while helping schools meet an important new safety standard. FACTORS
BEHIND A SUCCESSFUL WINDSCREEN INSTALLATION
A windscreen can give a fence line a cleaner appearance, provide privacy and turn an ordinary perimeter into valuable branding space. But even a high-quality windscreen can fail if the wrong fabric, hardware or installation method is used.
For branded applications, density becomes even more important. A tighter weave provides more printable surface area, resulting in sharper graphics and richer color. CoverSports offers custom printing that allows facilities to incorporate logos, school colors, sponsor messages and other graphics directly into their windscreens.
For more than 150 years, CoverSports has manufactured protective products for athletic and recreational facilities, including custom windscreens for tennis courts, ballfields, schools, parks and other sports venues. According to company president Zak Nissenbaum, getting the best performance from a windscreen starts well before installation.
3. Don’t neglect the hardware. The smallest components can determine how well the entire system performs. Brass grommets offer strong resistance to corrosion and weathering and should be installed through reinforced hems to help distribute stress. In higher-wind locations, vents can reduce pressure by allowing more air to pass through the screen. Boxed vents provide greater airflow, while half-moon vents offer a less noticeable option. Screens taller than six feet should include a lacing lip to provide additional attachment points and reduce billowing.
Weave density, hardware choices, accurate measurement and installation technique determine how a windscreen looks and how long it lasts. Rushed windscreen projects can leave buyers with wrinkled panels, distorted graphics, damaged screens or even a fence pulled to the ground. CoverSports offers insight into five key factors installation contractors should consider: 1. Start with wind load. Adding windscreen changes the dynamics of a chain-link fence. Air that once moved freely through the mesh now pushes against a much larger surface. Under extreme wind conditions, that pressure has to go somewhere. One strategy is to create an intentional weak point by using 50-pound zip ties instead of 120-pound ties or hog rings. In severe winds, the ties can break before the screen, grommets or fence structure sustains more expensive damage. “Replacing a few zip ties after a storm is far preferable to replacing a torn windscreen, bent fence posts or damaged fencing,” says Nissenbaum. “But any broken ties should be replaced promptly. Once a section is loose and begins flapping, it can damage the fabric coating and shorten the life of the windscreen.” 2. Match fabric density to the application. Weave density affects privacy, wind resistance and print quality. Most outdoor applications use mesh in the 80% to 90% density range, while solid vinyl is better suited to indoor or low-wind environments where maximum visual screening is desired.

4. Measure every section. Never assume two fence sections are identical. Each section should be measured independently from tension bar to tension bar rather than from post to post. Subtracting approximately 1 to 2 inches from both the overall width and height provides room to properly tension the panel and helps prevent wrinkles. In areas where mowing or trimming takes place, leaving approximately six inches between the screen and ground can also protect the material from maintenance equipment. 5. Install with consistent tension. Start at one upper corner and work across the top, pulling the screen slightly in the direction of installation with each attachment. Then secure the side before working across the bottom, gradually adjusting tension until wrinkles disappear and the screen lies evenly against the fence. “The finished appearance may be what everyone notices, but longterm performance comes down to details most people never see,” adds Nissenbaum. “For installers, taking a little more time to select the right material, hardware and installation method can mean the difference between a windscreen that simply looks good on installation day and one that continues to perform season after season.” Learn more at coversports.com.

A Guide to Deck Railing Materials and Styles Railings were once a bit of an afterthought for deck projects, but in recent years pros and homeowners alike have recognized the integral role railings play in the overall look, functionality, and sightlines of nearly every outdoor living space. What’s more, manufacturers have continued to elevate and expand offerings with new styles and colors across a range of materials. For buyers wondering where to start, Envision Outdoor Living Products, manufacturer of Envision decking and Fairway deck and porch railings, provides a primer on everything you need to know to start the selection process. What Makes Up a Railing System? Most railing systems comprise several key parts: • Railing: Also known as the top railing, or handrail, the railing runs horizontally between the vertical posts. • Bottom rail: In traditional railing systems, the bottom rail runs parallel to the top rail below the balusters or infill panels and is often smaller and more subtle. • Infill/balusters: The area below the top rail offers some of the deck railing’s aesthetic versatility, as well as support for the top rail. • Vertical supports/posts: Rail posts provide the attachment of support for top and bottom rails, horizontal balusters, and infill panels. • Post caps: All railing kits come with coordinating post caps, but you also can choose a different style to make it your own or add more flair. • Lighting: Plug-and-play LED lighting systems integrate into the railings, posts, post caps, and even decking to create the perfect soft glow.
Types of Deck Railing Materials Envision Outdoor Living Products offers one of the industry’s most comprehensive collections of decking and railing. Material options include: • Aluminum deck railing: Ideal for when durability is a must, aluminum deck railings withstand harsh weather; won’t rust, splinter, or warp; and are naturally strong. Look for powder-coated aluminum railings for increased durability. Aluminum is also lightweight and easy to install. • Composite deck railing: Like composite decking, composite railing offers the sought-after look of natural wood but without the associated maintenance concerns or the risk of twisting, rotting, or warping. Most composite railings feature classic styling that can be modernized using different infill styles.

Guide to Deck Railing Materials and Styles, continued from p32
• Vinyl deck railing: Vinyl railings combine affordability with durability for a budget-friendly railing that stands the test of time and requires little maintenance. • Steel deck railing: Nothing beats a classic, and steel railing delivers tried-and-true strength, durability, and low maintenance. Deck Railing Styles The look of a deck’s railing helps set the aesthetic tone and also influences how the railing feels in the hand. • Modern: There is a growing preference for slimmer railing profiles, which emphasize clean geometry and refined simplicity. These options offer a versatile contemporary style but also optimal visibility to views beyond. • Designer: Sleek and slim but with a rounded top and channeled detailing, designer styles offer a transitional option suitable for nearly any home style. • Traditional: Usually a T-top profile, traditional styles are classic and timeless. • Drink rail: Provides a flat surface for resting cups and glasses. Deck Infill Styles The style of infill is not only critical for tying the entire look of the space together, it plays a crucial role in determining the view. Certain types pair better with particular home styles. For example, an ultra-modern house usually looks best with slimmer balusters or with cable rail infill. • Balusters: The most common, balusters come in vertical and horizontal options, often in square or round shapes to shift the appearance more modern or more traditional.
Registration is Open for 2027 Fence Summit Hosted by the Canadian Fence Association and presented by Binns Canada
• Cable: Cable deck railing is made up of posts with stainless steel cables running between. Cables offer a clean, modern aesthetic along with a narrow profile and gray coloring to help preserve beautiful scenery beyond. • Glass Slats: An alternative to full glass panels, glass slats offer an unobstructed view and a high-end look. • Mesh: Mesh infill’s grid-like appearance is suitable for more modern or industrial looks. In today's fencing industry, products can be compared. Prices can change. Freight markets rise and fall. Trade policies evolve.
But trust is built over time. That belief has shaped Fence Empire since the day we opened our doors. As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, this year's Fence Show & Security Expo offers more than an opportunity to introduce new products. It offers an opportunity to strengthen the relationships that keep our industry moving forward. At Booth #632, visitors will discover more than Japanese Cedar, ornamental steel fencing, and the expanding AmeriRail® Aluminum Railing System. They will see how a dependable supply chain is built from carefully selected raw materials and manufacturing to quality control, logistics and consistent delivery across the United States.
More importantly, they'll meet the people behind that commitment. Throughout the show, our team will be available to discuss the challenges facing today's fencing businesses, including freight trends, inventory planning, sourcing strategies, market conditions, and long-term supply chain planning. These conversations have become an important part of our mission because we believe sharing knowledge helps create a stronger industry. For us, success has never been measured simply by the number of containers we ship. It is measured by the confidence our customers feel when they place an order, knowing we will honor our commitments, communicate openly, and continue standing beside them long after the shipment arrives. Every project begins with materials and every lasting partnership begins with trust. Whether you are looking for a dependable supplier, exploring new business opportunities, or simply interested in exchanging ideas with fellow industry professionals, we invite you to stop by Booth #632. If our conversation helps you make one better business decision, then your visit will have been worthwhile. We look forward to meeting you next month in Las Vegas. Temporary fencing has a short-term job to do, but that doesn’t mean it can’t look good doing it. At ZND, we combine a professional
appearance with the strength and durability needed for repeated use on active jobsites and at events. Different jobs call for different temporary fencing solutions, and we offer panel options for everything from construction sites and equipment yards to events and public spaces. Standard and anti-climb mesh configurations let customers choose the right level of security and access control, while 6- and 8-foot heights accommodate different applications. Our Smart Installer Series adds solutions designed around installation efficiency, including a one-person panel that can help crews do more with the people they already have. Our temporary fence panels are manufactured using SmartWeld® technology, a resistance-welding process that creates strong, consistent welds designed to withstand repeated handling, installation, and storage. Our panel design has fewer sharp edges and snag points for crews, helping support safer installation without sacrificing the durability required for a working temporary fence inventory. But the panel is only part of the system. We also offer pedestrian barriers, gates, stabilizers, bases, weights, couplers, and installation solutions that help our partners build the right setup for the job. Many of our accessories are compatible with other temporary fence systems, giving fence companies the flexibility to add new solutions to their existing inventory without replacing what they already own. Come visit us at Booth #1019, lift a panel, and see the quality of the welds up close. We’ll walk you through how our products can complement your current operation and show you our newest releases. For companies considering adding temporary fencing to their product mix, it’s also an opportunity to learn more about the market and the products needed to get started. With products assembled in the USA and supported by nationwide distribution, we give fence companies a dependable source for temporary fencing products as their needs grow, from adding a few accessories to building out a complete temporary fence offering. If temporary fencing is already part of your business, or you think it should be, stop by and let’s talk about what’s next. Visit znd.com/us to learn more.

CASE STUDY
Installation of New GDO by Sam’s Garage Doors Improves Business A Vancouver-area dealer explains why installation efficiency, serviceability, and reliability mattered more than horsepower in a busy car wash retrofit. Every commercial garage door dealer has customers who simply can't afford downtime: distribution centers, fire stations, municipal facilities, automotive shops, and car washes. For these environments, the right garage door operator is more than an impressive list of specs. It boils down to a reliable system that keeps the business operating efficiently. For Sam's Garage Doors in Vancouver, British Columbia, that lesson became especially clear during a recent retrofit at one of the region's busiest conveyor car washes. Processing an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 vehicles every day, the facility depends on a sectional overhead door that cycles with every wash. Operating at approximately 12 inches per second, the door endures thousands of open-and-close cycles while being exposed to constant moisture, temperature swings, and near-continuous use. Four nearby automobile dealerships also rely on the wash for vehicle detailing, making uninterrupted operation even more critical. "If the door doesn't move, they lose money," explains commercial service manager Pishro Aboubakr. "It's really that simple." Rather than simply replacing a failed operator with another version of the same product, the installation team at Sam’s Garage Doors used the opportunity to evaluate what characteristics actually matter most in a highcycle commercial application like a busy car wash. Reliability Starts Before the Door Ever Moves. The existing operator had become a constant source of service calls. Repeated control board failures, moisture finding its way into electrical components, and frequent troubleshooting visits meant the customer had begun to view the operator as a liability rather than a dependable piece of equipment. "We had nothing but issues," Aboubakr recalls. "We were replacing boards and constantly getting into the control panel." When Nice offered a beta test of its Nice Linear MCX commercial operator, the dealership decided it was worth trying in one of its most demanding applications. Three months later, the results had exceeded expectations. Installation Time Matters Too. Although commercial operators are often judged by their long-term performance, installation efficiency is equally important to project profitability and the overall customer experience. From the moment the MCX arrived on-site, its installer-friendly design stood out. One of the first things the technicians noticed was its lighter weight, which simplified handling during installation. "Installing a commercial operator is usually a two-person lift," says Aboubakr. "With the MCX, one technician was able to handle the installation." The reduced weight not only lowered labor requirements but also helped the team complete the retrofit more efficiently without compromising safety or ease of installation. The operator's ability to mount on either the left or right side of the opening also simplified the retrofit, reducing the need to modify the existing infrastructure. All told, the technicians completed the entire installation — including mounting, wiring, configuration, and programming — in just two hours. For commercial dealers juggling multiple service calls and installations each day, reducing labor time on every project can significantly improve productivity, profitability, and scheduling flexibility. Ground-Level Diagnostics Save Time and Service Calls. For this project, one of the most appreciated improvements wasn't visible to the customer at all. Instead of requiring technicians to climb nearly 16 feet 50
SEPTEMBER 2026 | FENCE NEWS USA
every time adjustments or diagnostics were needed, the operator places programming functions at eye level. Force settings, travel limits, error codes, programming and diagnostics – everything is accessible and adjustable from the wall-mounted control station. Reducing ladder work not only improves technician efficiency but also contributes to safer service procedures and faster troubleshooting. Think Beyond Performance Specifications. Commercial operator specifications often focus on horsepower, cycle ratings or opening speed. While those numbers matter, dealers know serviceability frequently determines long-term profitability. In this installation, easy access during power outages also became an important differentiator. Manual operation is straightforward, allowing technicians and facility staff to restore operation quickly when needed. Versatility Minimizes Stock, Expedites Projects. An unexpected benefit has been inventory simplification. Like many commercial dealers, Sam’s Garage Doors supports a wide range of operator types across its retrofit projects. Standardizing a versatile platform capable of serving multiple applications can reduce warehouse inventory, simplify technician training, and accelerate product selection. “Standardization helps us minimize stock,” Aboubakr explains. That efficiency is especially valuable for a company completing three to four commercial operator retrofits each week, helping ensure technicians have the equipment and familiarity needed to move quickly from one project to the next. Perhaps the strongest endorsement came from the customer, not after years of operation, but after only a few months. The car wash company, which operates four locations, has already decided that as additional operators reach
the end of their service life, they will be replaced with the same platform. For Sam's Garage Doors, that's the ultimate measure of success. The project reinforced a lesson many commercial dealers already understand: in high-cycle environments, customers aren't buying an operator, they're buying uptime. The best commercial operators don't simply open and close doors. They reduce installation labor, simplify future service, minimize inventory complexity, and keep customers' businesses moving. Anti-climb features make it harder for unauthorized pedestrians to access a school campus. Credit: Courtesy of Fortress Perimeter Solutions
Perimeter Security is Central to School Design According to a 2026 survey of more than 500 school staff members, more than half of respondents identified outdoor spaces and parking lots as the least secure areas on campus. That finding suggests many schools still view perimeter and exterior security as ongoing challenges, ranking those areas behind only front entrances as a security concern. As such, fence professionals are tasked with a crucial role of recommending and installing fences that work with other Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) measures to address the most vulnerable areas of a school campus. But doing so requires knowledge not just of what to look for in a fence but also how fences can adapt to create a layered approach to safer school design. Where do fences fit into safer school design? The Partner Alliance for Safe Schools (PASS) and other organizations recommend a layered approach in which multiple security measures work together rather than relying on any single product or point of control. Those layers can extend from the school’s entrance to a classroom entrance, or they can operate within one area, such as the property perimeter. Jarrett Adams, vice president & general manager – Fortress Perimeter Solutions, explains, “Strategic landscaping like hedges, ditches and berms, controlled vehicle access points and more establish a baseline for campus security. Fences enhance this baseline by creating a visual deterrent to would-be trespassers and a strong physical barrier to make unauthorized access more difficult.”
56
SEPTEMBER 2026 | FENCE NEWS USA
When a fence is built with minimal profile pickets and rails, it can deter, delay and deny trespassers without compromising sightlines across a campus, a key aspect of effective surveillance. Material considerations for a perimeter fence. While fences can improve the ability of school campuses to keep students, faculty and staff safe, not all fences provide the same type of protection. For instance, chain link fences do increase security, but they can be easily breached by climbing or cutting through the fence. Further, wood panel fences may provide a more robust barrier immediately, but they are prone to deterioration and block sightlines. Depending on a school’s needs, steel or aluminum fencing may be a better long-term solution. “Metal fences offer strong pickets,” Adams says, “that can fade into the background to maintain sightlines and an open campus feel. ” When finished with architectural grade powder coatings, steel fences can provide significant strength and durability while reducing ongoing maintenance lifts. Alternatively, corrosion-resistant aluminum options can be a solution for campuses near salt water or on the coast. Both materials can be engineered into full panels for quick installation. Design features that improve perimeter fence performance. In addition to materials, a fence’s design can be crucial to its ability to provide long-lasting security to a campus, especially if a campus includes other CPTED measures. For example, ditches and berms can support vehicle access control. They can also create steep changes in grade. Rackable fences can adjust up to 30 inches per eight-foot panel to follow these grade changes. As such, they minimize openings at the bottom of a fence without disrupting a smooth top rail line.
Along with a rackable design, hidden pin-hinge systems remove fasteners from view. On the one hand, this creates a more aesthetically pleasing fence. On the other hand, it makes unauthorized dismantling more time consuming—another deterrent to trespassers. Adams adds, “Anti-climb designs, like out-turned pickets and wire mesh, can further deter and delay on-foot trespassers.” Determining which features are most appropriate for a campus often involves collaboration between school administrators, security professionals, designers and fencing professionals. Why settle for one good fence when you can adapt to a project’s needs? When it comes to helping a school improve its ability to protect students, faculty and staff, the stakes can seem high. Despite the urgency and high emotion that may accompany safer school design decisions, it is important for all stakeholders to understand there is no single path toward enhanced security. Often, security decisions are individualized to the campus in question. “A single good fence may be able to meet some or a majority of the security goals a school identifies,” Adams explains. “But what is better than that is a fencing professional who is familiar and comfortable with a large range of options to meet a campus’ needs.” When fencing contractors align with manufacturers who offer multiple fence options, they can more readily adapt to the needs and goals of a school, streamlining selection and installation without compromising the premium performance of a steel or aluminum fence. Ignite Attachments Expands Support for John Deere Compact Tractors with New Front-End Attachment Solutions New bucket and pallet fork frame provide value-priced aftermarket alternatives backed by fast delivery and guaranteed compatibility. For years, John Deere compact tractor owners looking for aftermarket front-end attachments have faced limited options. Unlike most compact tractors, John Deere models use a proprietary loader interface, leaving many owners with few alternatives beyond dealership offerings. Ignite Attachments is changing that with the introduction of John Deere-compatible buckets and pallet fork frames, giving operators access to value-priced attachments that combine guaranteed fit, transparent pricing and fast, directto-you delivery. "Compact tractor owners shouldn't have to compromise because of the machine they own," says Trisha Pearson, business director at Ignite Attachments. "For too long, John Deere owners have had fewer aftermarket choices than operators of other compact tractors. By adding compatible buckets and pallet fork frames to our lineup, we're giving those operators more choice, more value and the confidence that their attachment will fit their machine." Designed Around Customer Demand Engineered specifically for John Deere compact tractors with the proprietary hook-and-pin loader interface, Ignite's new bucket lineup gives operators a purpose-built bucket designed specifically for the John Deere hook-and-pin interface. Available in 54-, 62-, 68- and 74-inch widths, the lineup makes it easier for customers to find the bucket that matches both their machine and the work ahead. Every Ignite attachment begins with a simple question: How can it work better for the customer? Designed in-house and manufactured in the United States using high-quality materials and proven manufacturing processes, the new buckets reflect Ignite's commitment to rethinking attachment design through practical improvements that enhance performance while delivering lasting durability and value. "When we developed this lineup, we didn't want to simply recreate what we already offered," Pearson said. "We listened to customer feedback and took the opportunity to introduce wider bucket options while expanding our lineup for John Deere

compact tractors. That's how we approach every product we design – listening to customers, solving real challenges and finding smarter ways to deliver more value." Material Handling Without the Compromise Designed for John Deere 100- through 400-Series loaders, Ignite's new pallet fork frame gives compact tractor owners a practical solution for everyday material handling. The 2,500-poundrated frame comes paired with 42-inch pallet forks and features five adjustable fork positions, allowing operators to safely move pallets, feed, seed, lumber and other materials with confidence. "Pallet forks are one of the most versatile attachments compact tractor owners can have," Pearson says. "We wanted John Deere owners to have the same choices as every other compact tractor owner. Adding this pallet fork frame is another step toward making it easier for customers to find the right attachment for the way they work." Built for convenience as well as durability, the pallet fork frame features tool-less fork installation for quick adjustments and a secure hook-and-pin interface designed specifically for John Deere loaders. Together, those features help
operators spend less time changing equipment and more time moving materials. The Ignite Edge Beyond buckets and pallet forks, Ignite continues to expand its lineup of attachments, 3-point implements, parts and accessories for compact equipment owners. From land management and material handling to routine maintenance, customers can find the products they need in one place through an easy-to-use online storefront backed by Fit Finder® compatibility, transparent pricing and fast shipping. Whether outfitting a compact tractor or stocking up on replacement parts and maintenance essentials, Ignite simplifies ownership with dependable products, comprehensive warranty coverage and responsive customer support. Wood Defender Expands Its Certified Applicator Training into a TwoDay Event for Fence Contractors Standard Paints, Inc., the family-owned coatings manufacturer behind the Wood Defender® brand of professional exterior wood stains, has expanded its long-running Certified Applicator Training Class into a two-day event that combines its Wood Defender staining class with a full business-strategy workshop for professional fence contractors. The new format adds a Thursday business workshop — The 7 Strategies for the Professional Fence Contractor, led by featured instructor Tony Thornton — ahead of Wood Defender’s Friday staining class. The workshop, a $500-per-attendee value, is included with a refundable class deposit. Thornton, founder of The Fence Consulting Group and a 50-plus-year veteran of the fence industry, is a former Executive Director of the American Fence Association and a member of the AFA Hall of Fame. His session walks contractors through planning, company culture, marketing, sales, operations, technology, and financials, and sends them home with drafted goals, a starter marketing plan, and a written standard operating procedure. Friday’s Wood Defender class is the company’s signature program for adding or growing staining as a service. Beyond hands-on product demonstrations and live fence-staining at a nearby job site, the day covers how to market and sell staining services, select equipment for any budget, manage a job site, and gauge the revenue a staining line can add to a fence business. It also includes classroom instruction and a tour of the Standard Paints manufacturing facility. Graduates earn Certified Wood Defender Applicator status and four continuing-education credits from the American Fence Association. The two-day class runs monthly this fall in Mansfield, Texas: September 24–25, October 29–30, and November 19–20. Each session combines Thursday’s workshop and an evening networking happy hour with Friday’s full-day class. Companies may send up to four attendees. A refundable $250 deposit per company reserves seats and is returned when the team attends. Learn more at WoodDefender.com/training

Kevin Sodermark started working as a laborer and welder at L&C Enterprises USA in 2013. Over time, he worked his way up the proverbial ladder to fence crew foreman, vice-president, and in 2026, he assumed the role of president and owner of both businesses.“Being part of the company’s expansion and helping develop our team has been very rewarding,” Sodermark says.“With a dedicated staff of 17 full-time employees, this recognition reflects the strong commitment and teamwork across our organization.” Fence News recently caught up with this busy business industry leader and learned more about how his company makes its mark in the industry. TELL US ABOUT THE HISTORY OF YOUR COMPANY. L&C Enterprises was founded in the late 1980s by Ron Chouinard and Jeff Lancor, who designed and built the original Installink Chain- Link Fence Dispensing machine. This innovation, at the time an attachment to a tractor, improved safety, increased efficiency, and doubled the productivity for fence installation crews across North America. L&C continued to advance automation within the fencing industry with the development of the Rapid Roller for efficiently rolling up used chain-link fencing and a Barbed Wire Dispenser capable of installing multiple strands of barbed wire simultaneously. Together, these machines significantly modernized professional fence installation. DESCRIBE THE PRODUCTS MADE BY L&C. L&C Enterprises-USA manufactures two primary product lines: fence ties, including Easy Twist and Twist Tight, and skid-steer attachments for the fencing industry. The ties have become widely adopted due to their efficiency and ability to support faster installation, reduced labor strain, and standardized results. The company’s attachments, including the Installink Fence Dispenser and Lobo Post Puller, further improve productivity by streamlining fence installation and post removal. With these
68
SEPTEMBER 2026 | FENCE NEWS USA
attachment tools and staff experience, one or two workers can complete a job that would normally be an all-day job for a four-man crew. DESCRIBE HOW DELTA FENCE AND L&C WORK IN TANDEM. Delta Fence provides a practical environment for testing, developing and training on L&C fencing equipment, supporting continuous improvement, employee development, and enhanced customer service. The partnership between the two companies fosters operational efficiency and innovation. It allows us to take on a wider range of installation jobs due to the advanced training, staff experience, and the equipment we manufacture and use in-house. Our dedicated shop staff enable us to continually improve and innovate. It's a convenient partnership – L&C makes equipment and products to help the fencing industry, and Delta Fence utilizes the machines that we make to help us get jobs done quickly and properly. We put our experience into the products we produce. WHO WERE YOUR MENTORS THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER? I was able to learn from Ron (Chouinard ) and Jeff (Lancor). They taught me there is more to being the owner than showing up each day, and that putting people first, whether it be our employees, our clients, or the
Upper Michigan community, is important for success. WHAT ARE SOME BUSINESS CHALLENGES YOU ANTICIPATE? Continually refining processes is one of the biggest challenges L&C faces. From procurement of steel for Easy Twist Ties, to upkeep and maintenance of fourslide machines, to shipping and receiving, we constantly look to improve our processes. Other exciting aspects of the manufacturing process include working on product line improvements such as enhancing the LOBO Post Puller and adding more functionality to the Barbed Wire Fence Dispenser. TELL US ABOUT THE FAMILY NATURE OF THE BUSINESS. Having my wife by my side has definitely been a help. My son, Logan, is part of the Delta Fence crew. My whole family, including my parents, is here in the Upper Peninsula. They’re proud of me and here for me, as well. Having family support nearby is huge. I have people whom I can lean on that have experience in many different aspects of the business. It’s nice to bounce ideas off them. Within the company, we have people here who are starting families and buying houses. I’ve been in the wedding parties of some of my employees. And there’s my dog, Max. He’s a three-year-old lab
and cannot be home alone, so he comes with me to the office and is loved by all the staff. Customers come in and look for him. Max was rescued from our local animal shelter. We partner with them on different projects such as Trunk or Treat in downtown Escanaba. I UNDERSTAND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU. WHAT ARE SOME OTHER ORGANIZATIONS YOU’VE PARTNERED WITH? Community involvement remains a core value shared by both businesses. We support several local schools and the Upper Michigan Honor Flight Network. Delta Fence sponsors regional events, including opening night at the Escanaba Motor Speedway. In 2025, we hosted a Business After Hours Chamber of Commerce event that welcomed almost 300 community members into our facility. All proceeds from beverage sales were donated to the animal shelter. It’s been amazing to hear people come in and say, you supported this, so I want to support a local company. I feel that if our business is in the community, we should support the community. We like to tell our clients that our two favorite things to support in the community are pets and vets. WHAT’S NEXT? Going forward, both L&C and Delta Fence have an exciting future with much to look forward to, whether through supporting our community events or designing and testing a new fence product. The one thing that has remained the same over the history of the company is consistency. With our fence ties, our fence attachment hardware, and the fences we professionally install, you will always get our highest level of consistency. We are dedicated to doing the best job for our customers each day. Learn more at lcenterprises-usa.com or deltafenceman.com.

Blow Your Own Horn. Don’t Wait for Someone Else to Do It for You! by Mark Levin, CAE, CSP executive vice president, Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute | 2022 Inductee, American Fence Association Hall of Fame
Since its very first issues, the pages of Fence News USA have been filled with stories about great accomplishments in the fence industry. Some of them have been about the success of family businesses that started off in the back of a pickup truck. Some of them have been about individual women or men who have made their mark in the fence industry by reaching a certain goal or level of achievement. Some of them have been about a fence project that stood out for its design or its unique use of fencing products. Wait. What was that last one again? We know what you are thinking: “Unique use of fencing products.” OUR company has been involved in several of those. Why didn’t we get a big story in Fence News USA? Uh, maybe nobody outside of your company knew about those projects. As we head into the last quarter of the year, we would be remiss if we didn’t remind you that now is the time to start getting your nominations in for the 2026-2027 Les Grube Memorial Design Award. This award was started more than 40 years ago during the period when Les Grube (then owner of Anchor Fence in Baltimore, Maryland) was President of the Chain Link Fence Manufacturer Institute (CLFMI), and the organization was trying to think of ways to show the public that chain link could be used in many ways beside just a fence around a property. There could very well be a qualifying project among those your company has recently completed or worked on. Over the years, dozens of Grube Award-winning projects have been splashed across the pages – and the covers – of Fence News USA, other industry publications, architectural magazines, newsletters, and websites, on social media, and across the construction industry, In addition to helping provide the publicity for these projects, CLFMI has teamed up with the Grube family to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in honorariums to the designing architects and the installing contractors. The architect of each of the winning projects receives a $2,500 cash award and the installing contractor receives a $1,000 cash award. Both the architect and the contractor also receive a uniquely designed plaque
and recognition at the next FenceTech Awards program. If you are waiting for someone else to nominate one of your company’s chain link projects, you could be waiting a long time. We really want our contractor and architect partners to get the recognition they deserve for the quality and the innovation they build into their projects. Look back through your company’s projects for the past 12-18 months, then go to the link below and take a look at some of our previous awardwinning projects. You might very well find out that one or more of your projects would be a good candidate for the 2026-2027 Les Grube Memorial Design Award.

Aquamesh® Offers Solutions on Land and at Sea Today, chances are that if you see a lobster trap anywhere in North America, it is built with Aquamesh®. In fact, more than 60 percent of the lobster traps used throughout North America are built with the product. That single innovation launched Riverdale Mills Corporation and, over the past 45 years, grew into one of North America's leading manufacturers of engineered welded wire mesh. Founded in 1980 in a long-abandoned mill on the Blackstone River in Northbridge, Massachusetts, Riverdale Mills Corporation began with little more than an idea and a deteriorated factory. As the business grew, the historic mill was restored section by section and returned to productive manufacturing, once again drawing power from the same Blackstone River that helped launch the American Industrial Revolution. Founder James Knott Sr., an economist by education and inventor by inclination, and his son, Jim Knott Jr.,

spent countless hours lobster fishing off Gloucester, Massachusetts, America's oldest fishing port. Their firsthand experience exposed the shortcomings of traditional wooden lobster traps, which were heavy, difficult to handle, vulnerable to rot and shipworm damage, and routinely destroyed by the harsh North Atlantic environment. Convinced there had to be a better solution, they developed Aquamesh®, the world's first welded wire mesh engineered specifically for marine trap applications. By combining galvanized-after-welding (GAW) steel with a durable marine-grade polymer coating, they created a mesh that was lighter, stronger, corrosion resistant, and dramatically longer lasting than anything available at the time. The innovation transformed the commercial lobster industry. More importantly, Aquamesh became the engineering platform upon which Riverdale built its future. The same technology that enabled Aquamesh to withstand decades of saltwater exposure, wave action, and severe weather proved equally valuable in countless demanding environments. Riverdale continuously refined its proprietary galvanizedafter-welding process, expanding from a single marine product into more than 3,500 welded wire mesh configurations serving the marine, fencing, agriculture, construction, industrial, infrastructure, and environmental markets. Unlike conventional welded wire, Riverdale's galvanized-after-welding process protects every weld

intersection, where corrosion almost always begins. By galvanizing after fabrication, every weld is completely encapsulated in zinc, significantly extending service life, reducing maintenance, and lowering long-term ownership costs. Today, Riverdale's GAW technology has become a benchmark for welded wire performance in corrosive and demanding environments. For fencing professionals, Riverdale has become synonymous with engineered performance and American manufacturing. Every fencing product is manufactured in the United States to meet or exceed ASTM standards, providing contractors, architects, engineers, and facility owners with a premium alternative to commodity imported wire mesh.

The company's philosophy is simple: if a welded wire mesh can survive decades in the North Atlantic, it will excel on land. That philosophy is reflected throughout Riverdale's product line. WireWall® High Security Mesh protects airports, correctional facilities, utilities, substations, border crossings, rapid transit systems, oil and gas facilities, data centers, and other critical infrastructure. Riverdale's Perimeter Mesh products secure manufacturing plants, warehouses, schools, commercial properties, stadiums, and industrial sites while providing durable solutions for farms, ranches, and residential fencing. Its Architectural Mesh combines structural performance with contemporary design for railings, façades, screening, and custom applications where appearance is as important as strength.

From the beginning, Riverdale Mills has never lost sight of the philosophy that started it all: identify a problem, engineer a better solution, and build it to last. That same philosophy continues to shape every fence, barrier, and welded wire product that leaves the mill. After all, the best fencing solutions are not invented in the laboratory. Leadership Through Crisis and Loss by Michael Reed executive director, American Fence Association
Leadership is easy to talk about when things are going well. Jobs are moving, people are working, and most days you’re just solving problems as they come up. You make decisions, keep things on track, and deal with whatever the day throws at you. That’s the version of leadership most of us are used to. But every so often, something happens that stops everything. No warning. No preparation. In one quick moment, things spiral completely out of control. Like the morning you walk in and find out one of your people has died. Yesterday they were there. Working, talking, loading trucks, dealing with customers, maybe even complaining about the weather, or the schedule, or the same things everyone complains about. Today their tools are still in the truck, or their desk is still the way they left it, and nothing about it feels like it should be real. There’s no leadership playbook for that moment. Nothing you can fix. Nothing you can improve. Nothing you can “handle” in the way leaders are expected to handle things. That’s the part of leadership nobody really prepares you for. Not the decisions, not the pressure, not the workload, but the moments where there is no solution, and your job is simply to hold things steady while everything around your team feels like it’s shifting.
In those moments, the instinct for most leaders is to move quickly. Get the facts. Say something. Take control before things get away from you. That instinct works almost everywhere else. But here, it can get in the way. Because what people need first is not a plan. It’s not answers. It’s your presence. Just being there matters more than getting it right. Saying less is often better than trying to say something polished or complete. People are processing something that doesn’t make sense yet, and they’re not looking for leadership in the traditional sense. They’re looking for stability. For someone to acknowledge what happened without rushing past it. And people will respond differently. Some will want to talk. Some won’t say much at all. Some will ask about work because it’s the only thing they can hold onto. Others won’t be able to think about work at all. None of this is wrong. It’s just different ways of dealing with something that doesn’t have a shape yet. A leader’s job isn’t to manage those reactions. It’s to make space for them. That might mean sitting in silence without filling it. It might mean saying what is known… and admitting what isn’t. It might mean adjusting expectations for the day or the week without turning it into a process. And it almost always means resisting the urge to immediately shift back
to productivity. Because the work will still be there. The jobs will still need to be finished. The customers will still need to be taken care of. But none of that comes first. This dynamic goes beyond the death of a team member. It’s the team member who is facing a messy divorce, another whose child attempted suicide, or one whose spouse is bravely battling cancer. Every person on your team is either going through something difficult, just coming out of something that changed them, or about to face something they don’t even see coming. Life doesn’t wait for convenient timing. Which means performance, patience, and communication are always being shaped by things outside the job. It’s weathering these challenging life events together that makes us human. Our people have families, lives at home, relationships, and a presence that extends far beyond their work life. It’s the messy intersection of our work and personal lives that make leadership in times of crisis the loneliest job on the planet. People process difficulty and loss differently depending on their life experiences, their resilience, and what they’re carrying already. Some will want to stay busy. Some will need time away. Some will be fine one day and struggle the next. There is no schedule for that, and trying to impose one usually does more harm than good.
Westwood Millworks Earns FSC® Chain of Custody Certification Westwood Millworks, a Macon, Georgia, manufacturer of Americanmade thermally modified wood for siding, decking, and architectural applications, announced it has earned FSC Chain of Custody certification. The certification provides Westwood with the systems to source, track, and supply FSC-certified material when a project requires it, ensuring each certified board is traceable through every stage of production. The certification was issued by Bureau Veritas Certification (BV) under FSC license BV-COC-228238. It confirms that Westwood can track FSCcertified material throughout its process and apply the FSC label to the products it supplies. Westwood sources and processes FSC-certified wood on a project basis when a customer specifies it. “Responsible sourcing has been central to how we’re building this company,” says Brent Hall, CEO of Westwood Millworks. “FSC Chain of Custody provides independent, third-party verification of what our
76
SEPTEMBER 2026 | FENCE NEWS USA
customers already trust us to do. For architects and builders working toward LEED, that documentation matters.” For design teams, the certification carries practical weight. When a project specifies FSC-certified material, it can contribute to LEED v4 credits under Building Product Disclosure and Optimization and Sourcing of Raw Materials, providing design professionals with documentation to submit toward green building goals. It also gives specifiers a third-party sourcing record for a domestic product, avoiding the overseas freight and longer lead times associated with imported thermally modified wood. So, leadership becomes less about managing reactions and more about allowing them. Making room for people to step back when they need to, and to return when they’re ready. Not overcomplicating it. Not turning it into a system. Just recognizing that people are not machines that reset on command. Eventually, the organization does have to move forward. Work continues. Responsibilities shift. Projects get reassigned. The rhythm returns, even if it feels different. But moving forward is not the same as moving on. Modeling a steady hand takes wisdom and perspective. Good leaders help teams weather the challenging times. They provide steadiness when things seem out of control. They help to create a culture where we help one another through difficult times. They are present. That kind of resilience doesn’t slow a company down. It grounds it and makes it a place where people are human. That’s the kind of leader that people want to follow.

Building a Safety Culture Your Crew Actually Believes In
Every fence company has a safety manual. Not every company has a safety culture. The difference is obvious when the owner isn't on the jobsite. A safety manual tells employees what they're supposed to do, but safety culture is what actually happens when the crew is digging holes, hanging gates or rushing to finish before dark. If someone skips the gloves, decides to "chance it" without a utility locate or takes a shortcut because the customer wants the job finished today, that's not a policy problem. It's a culture problem. Here are some guidelines for creating a true safety culture: Start with the crew leader. Installers pay far more attention to what the foreman does than what's written in a handbook. If the person in charge cuts corners, everyone else assumes it's acceptable. If the crew leader wears PPE, insists on utility locates and refuses to compromise safety to save a few minutes, those habits become the standard. Make it easy to do the right thing. The company has a role, too. If a locate typically adds a day to the schedule, plan for it instead of treating it like an inconvenience. Keep gloves, eye protection and other PPE stocked in every truck. Remove the excuses before expecting perfect compliance. Communication matters. Encourage crews to speak up when something doesn't look right without worrying about being criticized. A simple question at the end of the day such as, "Did anything happen today we should learn from?" can uncover problems while they're still small enough to fix, and also provide an opportunity for reinforcing safety guidelines.
78
SEPTEMBER 2026 | FENCE NEWS USA
Pay special attention to new hires. Their first few weeks shape the habits they'll carry throughout their careers. Pair them with your safest installers, not simply the crew that has an opening. They'll learn far more from watching experienced professionals than from sitting through orientation. When something does go wrong, resist the urge to find someone to blame. Instead, ask what allowed it to happen. Was the schedule unrealistic? Was the right tool unavailable? Were the expectations clear? Companies that treat every incident as a learning opportunity build trust. Companies that focus on blame often find their crews stop reporting close calls altogether. Track safety the same way you track production. Don't just count injuries. Pay attention to near misses, damaged equipment and situations that could have ended much worse. Those are often your best warning signs. Review them regularly and, just as importantly, let your crews see what changed because they spoke up. The safest companies aren't the ones with the thickest safety manual. They're the ones where every employee – from the newest laborer to the owner – understands that going home safely is simply how the job gets done. That's a culture built one jobsite, one decision and one conversation at a time.
byTom Luby owner of Profit Builders International
Creating More Profit through Niche vs. Fragmented Sales Channels They say great salespeople are born, not made. To some extent, I agree, but creating profitable sales in the fencing – or any – industry is more than just great salesmanship. It also takes great sales management and a considerable amount of planning to complete the profit puzzle. There are several sales tools and skill sets that can reinforce your sales efforts and make Value Selling more profitable for your company, but those tools and skill sets are not easy to learn and even more difficult to hone into a fine sales pitch. Not all members of your sales staff may have the ability or training at their disposal to handle the more difficult and competitive sales pitches. This can lead to failure and lost opportunities, and that leads to loss of revenue, not a good thing in any business. In the past, I have written about a many sales training tools to help improve your capture ratios and profit margins, tools like “value selling,” selling backwards, profiling, market segmentation tactics, and how to develop the very best personalitybased sales opportunities. But another method to help improve both profit and sales volumes comes from management and not from the sales team at all. Management’s ability to understand the market in the area you service, knowing or learning how to best “pick your fights,” and finding ways to win the most sales, regardless of the skill level of your sales staff, is critical for success. It is like learning how to simplify your sales efforts; eliminating the tough sales pitches and replacing them with less competitive and more profitable opportunities. One such method for improving sales volumes and profit margins is learning, understanding and optimizing niche versus fragmented sales channels. This is not rocket science. A niche market, or niche sales channel, is like the road less traveled. It’s the product and/or service less frequently provided, and/or sales channels or opportunities not as apparent and obvious, and therefore not as competitive. Fragmented marketing and sales channels are obvious ones that everyone is fighting to enter, and are super competitive, therefore by definition, less profitable. In some instances, for example, you can even find yourself
competing against large box stores or even worse, manufacturers selling direct to the general public. Getting out from under a fragmented and over competitive sales situation, and into a niche sales market opportunity, is not always an easy task. It is one that takes vision and an open-minded approach to the market. Also, being a good listener to what your customers are asking for and having a creative and inventive point of view are key ingredients to moving from fragmented to niche market sales and much greater profits for the company. Let me give you an example. Many years ago, I was consulting with a large fence contractor with offices in Dallas and Houston, Texas. Now as most of you know, this is a major market area and if you have ever done business here, you know it is very competitive in many fence categories, particularly vinyl fence sales. When I arrived, the vinyl fence business had been suffering from years of price devaluation and the mentality of always being the cheapest, otherwise known as “death by a thousand cuts,” loomed over vinyl fence sales. It created an overly competitive market, making it particularly difficult to procure sales at a profitable level. How did we handle the situation? I would never recommend anything as drastic as getting out of the vinyl fence business, but instead, my client carefully chose a vendor to create something special about their product to separate it from the rest of the vinyl fence products in the market area. Not a true niche, but better than having nothing to distinguish you from your competition. Equally importantly, we also began looking into alternate fence product types that were not as competitive and very lucrative. In this case, my client wisely chose imitation masonry and other unique privacy façade fencing types, as there were very few fencing contractors in the entire market area that offered that product. And while demand was relatively small at first, it was growing rapidly. This was a true niche and my client ran with it. Within a few years this new fence product grew rapidly and the revenue stream and volume of business for the company dramatically improved, along with overall profit. In the process, my client
virtually cornered the market in this fencing category. Creating your own niche market from a fragmented market takes only a bit of creative thinking and the ability to listen to market demands to find the gaps in your area. Although not creating a true niche, another example to separate you from the crowd is to identify your fence product with something your competition does not have. Maybe create unique fence styles and name them for famous people or landmarks in your area. At USA Fence in the Tampa area, for example, they have created two unique vinyl fence models they call the “Bradenton” fence and the “Sarasota” fence. Not only that, with the Bradenton fence model they use cut-offs and short pieces, which reduces waste. A win for everyone. Another idea is to brand your special fence product with construction differences, such as special aluminum post stiffeners that only your company uses – whatever can help create a niche for you. Also, please keep in mind the niche can be created from any customer demand, not just for product demand, but for service, financing, perceived ancillary product value or even regional environmental nuances. For more ideas on how to transform a fragmented market into a niche for your company, please do not hesitate to contact me personally.

Build Stronger Vinyl Fences from the Inside Out
LMT’s Dual Fit Top Rail Tie creates a cleaner, stronger, longer-lasting connection and fits both 4” and 5” posts to help contractors simplify inventory while installing with confidence. Superior strength and stability: • Distributes rail tension across a wider area inside the post instead of concentrating stress at a single screw point. • Helps prevent sagging and pull out: Keeps rails secure and aligned, even in tall privacy installations or demanding conditions. • Supports a rigid, durable fence system that stays plumb, secure, and professional-looking over time. Protects the Post. Improves the Finish: • Reduces the risk of cracking, splitting, or weakening caused by traditional keeper screws. • Preserves the post’s appearance with a clean, hidden connection. • Helps maintain the integrity of vinyl posts as they expand and contract with temperature changes. Faster, Cleaner Installation: • Install the rails, drop in the tie, and secure the connection simple, reliable, and installer-friendly. • Dual Fit design: Works with both 4” and 5” vinyl posts, eliminating the need for an additional SKU. • Reduces the need for precise notching or repeated adjustments, helping crews save time in the field. Fewer Callbacks. More Confidence: • Minimize rail movement, gaps, warping, and misalignment over time. • Strengthens the overall fence system while supporting the low-maintenance advantages vinyl is known for. A Premium Upgrade Customers Can See and Feel: • Positions the fence system as a stronger, upgraded solution rather than a standard vinyl installation. • Gives contractors a practical selling point: reinforced rail connections for a more secure, professional build. Small Part. Big Difference: • A simple, cost-effective upgrade that helps prevent expensive repairs and replacements later. • Improves perceived value and supports a premium product position. • Helps contractors deliver a better result without adding unnecessary complexity to the installation. One tie. Two post sizes. Less inventory: LMT’s Dual Fit Top Rail Tie helps streamline ordering, reduce warehouse complexity, and keep crews moving with one reliable solution for both 4” and 5” post applications.
Bottom line: Internal top rail ties are one of the smartest upgrades for vinyl fence systems. They strengthen the rail-to-post connection, protect the vinyl post, improve installation efficiency, and help create a fence that looks better and performs longer. Upgrade every post with confidence. Choose internal top rail ties for cleaner installations, stronger connections, and fewer callbacks because a better fence starts with better products.
