On the Fence: Mechanical vs. Hydraulic Drills Tips on when to use a mechanical or hydraulic drill for fencing applications In the fencing industry, efficiency is a key factor for success. Although the size and power of a drill might seem like the obvious factors for maximizing performance when digging holes for fence posts, that isn’t always the case. To get the best productivity on the jobsite, fencing contractors can benefit from understanding whether a mechanical or hydraulic drill is the right fit for the job based on factors like soil type and hole size. Check out these tips from Little Beaver Inc. for factors contractors should consider when selecting the best drill for their operation. SOIL CONDITIONS First and foremost, contractors should consider the soil conditions before putting a drill to the ground. When it comes to fencing, soils like sand, silt and loam are the perfect match for a mechanical drill. In these soil conditions, mechanical drills can deliver high auger speeds for fast project completion. Some can even operate at up to 360 rotations per minute (RPM) for faster performance. The speed of these drills, paired with a lightweight design to maximize mobility, allows fencing crews to dig fence post holes quickly and efficiently. Although mechanical drills can be used for any soil, hydraulic drills are a great choice to optimize efficiency in fencing applications with clay, rock or frozen ground. While the RPM doesn’t match that of a mechanical drill, the rugged body and high torque of hydraulic drills give them the power to plow through the densest soil.

SPEED AND TORQUE Speed and torque are the keys to maximizing efficiency in fencing applications, but more of both isn’t always better when it comes to finding the perfect balance between power and pace. Whether a fencer should prioritize speed or torque goes back to the soil conditions where they are drilling. In the right environment, mechanical drills can achieve speeds up to two times faster than a hydraulic drill in the same conditions. Plus, the lightweight design of mechanical drills makes them easy to move from one fence post hole to the next. When used in sand, silt or loam, the

fast RPM can even help to clear out soil from the fence post hole by flinging it off to the sides instead of causing it to fall back into the hole, which can happen with a slower RPM. Occasionally, fencing crews might attempt to use a mechanical drill on hard, frozen ground. With the right points and blades, a mechanical drill can take on jobs in most soil conditions, but if the majority of the jobs involve hard, frozen ground, hydraulic drills are ideal. In hard ground conditions, mechanical drills are prone to spinning rapidly without breaking through the ground. Hydraulic drills have two times the torque of mechanical drills, which means they can double down and easily pierce through difficult soils. While hydraulic drills may be heavier than mechanical drills due to their rugged design, some have a reversible drive for added maneuverability and easy removal from fence post holes. POST SIZE One of the most straightforward factors fencing contractors should consider when choosing a drill is the size of the hole needed for the fence post. Mechanical drills are best suited for small to medium holes around six to eight inches in diameter. On the other hand, hydraulic drills are perfect for drilling larger holes up to 10 to 12 inches in diameter. Some fencing contractors might be tempted to base their drill choice on the size of the fence post hole, but this factor has been placed last on the list

for a reason. It’s important to keep in mind that hydraulic drills have the versatility to drill smaller holes the same size as mechanical drills if the soil conditions call for it. With that said, it’s a good rule of thumb to prioritize the drilling environment before anything else.

Increase In-House Manufacturing Capacity Many fencing professionals are installers, but challenging issues are driving more and more fence companies into increasing in-house manufacturing capacity. Vogel Tool & Die, one of the oldest suppliers to the fence industry, helps make in-house manufacturing within reach for many fence companies that install chain link and metal ornamental fences. Vogel invented the pipe notcher in the 1930’s for chain link installation, and today, it remains one of their top selling tools. While their hand press is a staple on job sites, some fence companies may not realize that for many years, Vogel has offered a bench-top power press. “This hydraulic press can not only step up your notching game, it is also the gateway to in-house manufacturing of multiple parts needed for a variety of types of fencing,” explains Larry Siegal, sales manager with Vogel Tool & Die. Vogel’s power press option has become a game changer for many fence shops. By offering a turntable, Vogel’s power press permits installing three different sized notchers. “This eliminates changeover time as well as the risk of installing a punch with a mismatched die, something that can be a safety risk and result in damaged tooling,” Siegal says. “However, the real benefit of Vogel’s press is its power and versatility. With a compact footprint, less than two feet wide, the power press can be set up on a workbench,” he says. “Since it requires standard 120V power with a standard three-prong plug, typical installation is simple. Despite its modest appearance, this press can generate up to 25 tons of power, enough for specialized tooling, like notching schedule 80 (oil field) pipe and more.” Once shops make the decision to upgrade to power, Vogel’s broad range of tooling really opens the door to doing more in house. companies building larger panels or big cantilever gates, making a cross brace that will mate on an angle is a challenge. Vogel’s Arc-Fit Angular notching tool fits this press and in about 10 seconds, will notch the end of a pipe with the required contour to fit around the mating pipe. While a 45° is common, Vogel offers a 35° option that has a bonus of being appropriate for handrail applications. Tools can even be designed for different sized pipes, such as when a 1-5/8” cross brace will mate with a 2-3/8” upright. “For those building ornamental panels, Vogel offers a suite of tooling that will allow you to build what you need instead of having your scheduling dependent on outside sources for components or finished panels,” Siegal says. “Tools offered include a picket forming tool that turns square tubing into a spear point picket in one stroke of the press.” Companion tools include tools that will pierce channel or square tubing to make the horizontal rails for ornamental panels. In seconds, the tube is cut. And, unlike costly band-saw blades, Vogel’s cut off blades are easy to sharpen inhouse and are currently $100 to replace,” he says. Machinery Saves Time and Labor for Fence Installations

One of the biggest problems for fence installers these days is handling labor costs. Fence installation takes manpower. Injuries can happen when workers are doing the same things repeatedly, day after day, week after week. It is physically intense work. Robert Miller, with Quick Link Fence, has invented a way to solve this problem. With over 50 years in the fencing industry, he’s come up with a better way. “In the early days of fence installation, a crew o three would have to handle the rolls of wire from the truck to the location of wherever it was being installed,” Miller explains. “Many times, the final destination is not accessible by truck, so workers are carrying the wire mesh, standing it up, and then spinning the rollout in a vertical position.” From handling the roll, to standing the roll to spinning it; the wire mesh is handled quite a bit. “Typically, the first couple of rows are not usually so bad, but as the repetition sets in, it can get tiresome quickly,” he says. Miller created a fence installer machine called the Dominator, a tractor machine that works well on uneven job sites. It has an extra set of quick hydraulic disconnects that can plug anything 3000 psi or lower, operating anything

hydraulically driven up to 3000 psi. His other creation is called the Manipulator, a tire machine designed for projects on a hard surface, such as a tennis court. These machines are 100 % made in the USA. “These machines do away with the manual heavy lifting, maneuvering and ladder climbing. On an average 1000-foot project, you might be climbing the ladder 600 times. Anyone doing that over and over can likely strain their knees and hips,” Miller explains. In addition to the lifting and maneuvering, the machines save time, laying the fence in over half the time it used to take four laborers, laying the fence through the front of the device with two laborers instead of three. “We can now do a 1000-foot job in three hours; it would have taken two days with the same three laborers before using either one of the machines”, Said Robert Miller. The machine can hydraulically pick up the roll, and dispenses the fence as one person is

driving along. The second person can stand on an adjustable platform on the left-side of the machine. As the machine moves along, it rolls out the fence while the second person is on the platform, hanging the wire fence. After completing the fence rollout, the fence installers can then us the machine to fasten the wire to the framework. The machine eliminates the lifting of the rolls and makes spinning out the fence effortless. “Replacing three or four workers with two, it saves labor costs while making fence installation much easier,” he says. “Let the machine do the work. Fencing in the Power of the Sun

The topic of green energy has been a mainstay in the world’s news headlines for years. But several factors have placed an even greater emphasis on the subject in recent months. The Environmental Protection Agency’s aggressive stance on fossil fuels has made it clear that the march toward green energy has become a sprint. Sharply rising costs for gasoline, diesel fuel, and natural gas have also turned green energy from an environmentally responsible option to an economic necessity. As the demand for large solar farms grows, global supply chain issues and labor shortages mean developers must take an efficient approach to remain viable and profitable. THE BIRTH OF A SOLAR FARM On February 18, 2021, the Ohio Power Siting Board approved Yellowbud Solar, LLC’s application to construct a 274-megawatt solar farm in Pickaway County, Ohio. Upon completion, the solar facility will occupy a 2,040-acre project area and consist of large arrays of ground-mounted photovoltaic modules that are mounted on a tracking system that will rotate to track the sun. Yellowbud Solar and National Grid contracted one of North America’s largest engineering and construction organizations for the construction of the project. The contract required that the contractor install fencing simultaneously as the panels were installed to help prevent theft, unlawful entry, and possible injury. CALLING ON THE FENCING EXPERTS The scale of the fencing installation, including nearly 20 miles of fencing and 14,000 wooden posts secured in cement, mandated an approach that would be efficient and safe. The contractor looked to EZG Manufacturing, based in Malta, Ohio, for its well-known tools of the fence installation trade. Included were the Barbwire Hog and its accompanying Stretch-N-Go attachment, the Fence Hog, and the Mobile Mud Hog. “I was already familiar with EZG and knew they had quality products, so I had no reluctance in choosing the Fence Hog, Mud Hog and Barbwire Hog for the Yellowbud project. They were definitely up to the task,” says Tony Schweiger, site supervisor. The EZG Fence Hog maximizes productivity through dramatically increased efficiency. In fact, it can provide the productivity of a four-person crew with two or three men. Fencing industry veterans assisted in the design

and development of the Fence Hog. They needed a product that picked up a fence roll from the ground without great physical effort. The Fence Hog also provides efficiency through capacity, holding up to 100 feet of chain link or 330 of woven wire, so constant reloading is unnecessary. The Mud Hog negates the need for a cement truck which could cause damage to the landscape. When fully operational, the Yellowbud Solar Farm will positively impact the local economy and environment. It will offset carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 392,000 tons per year—the equivalent of removing more than

The DTNA MS600 Swing Style Picket Pointer is a simple machine to set up and operate for cutting pickets. It is a similar design as the obsolete MAR-SAL picket pointer. Boards and cants up to a total of 6” width can be pointed. Various point styles can be achieved with the MS600 such as french gothic, gothic, stockade and round dog ear. Two air clamps hold the boards securely in place during the cutting process.

Stain First, Then Install In the past, staining a fence or deck was done once they were built, and it was dependent on weather conditions. Today, StainTrac offers a new way to complete the project. This system uses the StainTrac machine to pre-stain pickets, posts, rails, cap boards and more, up to 8” wide and 8” deep and any length. Each board is sprayed with stain, then passed through nap rollers to remove excess and evenly spread stain to all surfaces. Excess stain drains back into the bucket below and is re-circulated so there is virtually zero waste. “These boards can be used for almost any outdoor wood construction project,

whether it’s a fence, deck, pergola or anything along those lines,” explains Duane Voss, owner and inventor of StainTrac. He partnered with long-time friend Cliff Richison to offer StainTrac worldwide. “We wanted to eliminate the pain points associated with staining wood. StainTrac allows for pre-staining in an economical and efficient way. The wood is stained indoors so contractors are not waiting on weather for staining. The project is then built with the stained wood so once the project is built, it is ready to be billed and collected,” explains Voss.

“Contractors who have purchased this machine for their businesses have seen an increase in productivity and they have more control over their projects,” he says. The StainTrac machine is made in America. Voss is an Army veteran. He grew up in Bruning, Nebraska, and has over 50 years of experience in the fence industry as an expert fabricator. Caleb and his wife, Ashley, own Nashville’s oldest and most trusted staining and sealing company. WHAT LED TO THE START OF STAIN & SEAL EXPERTS? My wife, Ashley, and I started the business in 2012. I was working in my family’s fencing business at the time and wanted to earn extra money by staining fences on the side. Our volume of business increased so much, we started Stain & Seal Experts to focus solely on staining fences. WHAT WAS YOUR CAREER BACKGROUND PRIOR TO THE START OF YOUR COMPANY? My family owns Clean Cut Fence Company in Nashville, Tennessee. Growing up, I saw my parents work day and night, there were always fence materials, work trucks and fence installers at our home. I remember when all the other kids played outside, went on vacation and became couch potatoes during summer break, I got to build fences. When I turned 18, I wanted to work in the family business, but my dad said I needed to work for someone else first, which I did. The next year, I got the opportunity to work in the family business. I made my first sale and then my dad basically handed the me the business. With the help of my mother, we ran that business together for about 10 years. After a few years, I added staining to our services and found there was a lot of potential for growth in that division, and that’s when I branched off and began Stain & Seal Experts. WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER? We work with contractors, fencing companies and residential customers in a variety of ways,

handling the staining and maintenance of fences, decks, and pretty much any kind of outdoor wood structure. At one point, we became frustrated with the stain products available off the shelf, we decided to make our own stain formula. Without warning, dozens of contractors started calling, wanting to buy the new stain we were making, and our manufacturing business was born. Today, Stain & Seal Experts offer professional wood care services that include fence staining, deck staining and wood restoration for the Nashville market. We teach a couple hundred contractors each year how to start and operate a staining business just like we do. Our stain brand, EXPERT Professional Wood Care, is available for purchase online and throughout a vast retailer network throughout the US and Canada. Our company hosts Staining University, an annual convention for wood restoration and staining contractors from all over the country. This gives them an opportunity to train as well as share ideas about the wood restoration industry. HOW DID THE “EXPERT CLUB” COME ABOUT AND WHAT FEEDBACK DO YOU GET FROM CUSTOMERS? With any type of outdoor wood structure, there’s a rhythm to it. First, they look great, then they begin to age and then they begin to show the damage from exposure to the sun and weather. So, there’s a significant period when the structure doesn’t look great. We decided there must be a better way, that’s when we created the Expert Club.

For a small monthly fee, Stain & Seal Experts will maintain outdoor wood structures with consistent annual care, ensuring fences, decks, gazebo’s, etc. are healthy, protected and look great. Because the wood is properly maintained, you avoid the cost of a complete restoration. Many of our customers are noticing their decks and fences are lasting longer and looking better than ever, because of this regular maintenance. They enjoy their wooden structures more because they look great all the time.

WHAT LESSONS HAVE YOU LEARNED AS A BUSINESS OWNER? Early in the family fence business, we had many struggles. When I started Stain & Seal Experts, I knew I didn’t want to experience the same struggles. I studied sales, marketing, business, and finance and found I have an insatiable desire to learn. Every time I encounter a problem in my business, I look at it as an opportunity to learn and share. HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE YOUR TEAM? Three Steps to a Sure Sale

IF YOU WERE TO EXAMINE THE ABILITIES, SKILLS AND PERSONAL SALES TECHNIQUES OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL SALESPEOPLE IN THE WORLD, WHAT COMMON TRAITS WOULD YOU FIND? THE TECHNIQUE THEY USE IS “PERSONALITYBASED SALES” AND IS EXPRESSED AS BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH CUSTOMERS. I have always found this approach to be effective with any potential customer, whether it is a onetime residential customer, a major contractor or other larger commercial account. The most successful fence salespeople have proven this is a natural method for them to continually generate large sales volumes and I am confident that with the right training and support, your sales staff will do the same. This is not an online networking or social media sales technique. This is a “meet and greet” approach and to be successful, your sales staff must realize the importance of personal contact. This is all about building relationships with each potential customer. Whether it is a residential homeowner or a national home builder, building relationships is key and this three-step process can be best accomplished by following these key components: COMFORT. Get the customer or contractor comfortable with you and your fence company. Remember that all sales initially begin as an adversarial process. Subliminally, your potential customers may think of you as the enemy, trying

to take their money. Therefore, the first job of a successful salesperson is to break down or eliminate that mentality. It’s your job to turn that mindset around. Salesmanship is all about making yourself an ally instead of the enemy. This can be accomplished in several different ways, as long as it does not include a sales pitch. A simple compliment can usually work, such as “Nice house” or “Who did your landscaping, they did a great job”. Any kind of ice breaker will do if it has nothing to do with business or the sale itself. The idea is that you initially want to get your customer on another playing field for a moment so that you can get to know each other on a personal level. Know and use their names. Relating to your customer is extremely important and can be the difference between making the sale or not. CONFIDENCE. To shift the adversarial process, be honest, professional, sincere, and genuinely concerned about your customer and their needs. You are the fence pro, and especially for residential customers, they need your help and advice in choosing the correct product.

You need to be a good listener. Never argue or disagree with them. If their ideas don’t seem to make sense, listen anyway, and offer suggestions or other alternatives. Perhaps they don’t realize why something is done a certain way, you can help educate them in a polite, friendly way. Perception is everything. How does the customer perceive you to be? Honest and sincere or deceptive and evasive? You must get them to believe in you. Never underestimate your customer. If you can convey to them the fact that even though you’re there to make a sale, you want them to be satisfied with the result, so you’ll only do business in an honest manner. Then, they will begin to relate to you as a friend and that is key. TRUST. If you can get your customer comfortable and confident with you personally and dealing with you and your company, then you can begin this final process of gaining trust. This is the most difficult step in the sales process and the most important. If you gain the customers’ complete trust, your job is done. You have made the sale! Unfortunately, this is easier said than done.

Trust is such a personal thing that is established between buyer and seller. It really is impossible to teach, it is something that must be sincerely felt between both parties. Expressing the honesty and sincerity mentioned earlier is paramount in establishing trust. If you genuinely believe in yourself and your product the customer can almost feel your confidence. They’ll believe in what you’re selling. After this, the only thing left is to write the order. For commercial and industrial fence accounts, things are a bit different, but still personality based. The construction industry is different from other industries in several ways. First, there are a limited number of general contractors, architects, and other commercial accounts to call on. It is not like selling a car or a TV, those products have an almost unlimited supply of potential customers, you only have so many. Also, in the construction industry, many of your customers are longterm, if you are doing your job. Therefore, it is critical that you follow the same three steps to build relationships with as many of your customers as you possibly can. The most critical component that the salesperson must communicate when attempting to gain trust and build relationships is to

relate a feeling to the customer of honesty and professionalism. Never promise something that you are not sure you can deliver. If it’s a possibility, tell them that. Dealing with a customer is like a pot of water that you bring to a boil. When it’s boiling, close the sale. The longer you let the pot sit after you bring it to a boil, the cooler it gets and the harder your job. There are other companies who are trying to gain the trust of the same customer, so when you gain that trust, write the order. The sooner the better.

Rocket Fence officially launched in Houston, Texas, on January 29, 2021. Founder and owner Caleb Pickle, and his wife Kimberly, were lifelong Houstonians. Since Houston is known as “Space City” with NASA in close proximity, they chose the name Rocket Fence to tie into the city they love. Before Rocket Fence, he was selling insurance and she was a teacher. Caleb persistently called on a big fence contracting company in Houston to sell them insurance. “Eventually, they called me back and said they didn’t want the insurance but wanted to hire me because of how persistent I was and because of my strong work ethic,” he explains. He decided to give it a shot. Over time, he had several positions within that company and other fencing companies, including sales, and many aspects of production. “As an inside sales rep for one of the main suppliers/distributors gave me a new perspective on the industry. I was seeing the various fence contractors as they came to pick up materials and I learned from them how they did things,” Caleb says. “I also learned a lot about supply chain issues.” His most recent job before Rocket Fence was working for a smaller fence contractor. “I was the A-to-Z person,” he explains. “I took a lead, sold the work, and saw the work through to completion as my own project manager. It was a perfect way to apply all the knowledge and work experience I had gathered and put it into action.” “I never set out to have my own business, nor did it occur to me until after a long time in the fencing industry. One day, I realized it was inevitable and that the only thing holding me back was what holds back a lot of eventual entrepreneurs: the fear of all the ‘what ifs’. But, I knew how to do it right and what it would take to get things going, so I invested a lot of nights and weekends coming up with a game plan,” he says. Rocket Fence ended up earning $750,000 in revenue in 2021 and managed to post a six-figure profit. The business is currently on target to hit or break $1 million in revenue for 2022 and currently developing plans for beyond that. “We ultimately want to grow a business that is obviously a successful one, but not at the expense of others; whether it be the customer, the crews, or employees,” Caleb says. “I’ve experienced many situations at previous jobs where customers, crews, and employees were not treated correctly or put into a position to succeed. We also want to make our money, but we refuse to lose our identity as we grow, even if it means turning down some business to make sure we handle the business we’ve already committed to. Making promises and keeping them is rare in today’s corporate culture and we want to inspire others to see business as a way to ultimately help people instead of it being only a self-serving endeavor.” Today, Kimberly has left her teaching career to help run the Rocket Fence office. She and Caleb have a two-year-old son, Walt, and another son on the way. Rocket Fence serves the greater north Houston area, and handles mostly residential projects with some commercial work, as well.

Canfor Southern Pine Holds Groundbreaking Ceremony for New U.S. Sawmill Complex

Ground was officially broken on April 21 for Canfor Southern Pine’s DeRidder Plant in DeRidder, Louisiana. The $160 million state-of-the-art sawmill complex is being built with modern technology which will make the journey from log to lumber a high-tech process. The strategic location of Canfor’s 16th U.S. operation is key to serving existing growing markets and to allow Canfor to grow its market presences globally, provide additional sustainable product for global customers and drive economic growth in the region. The site is located strategically with proximity to the robust Texas market, along with rail and port access. This plant will process southern yellow pine from Louisiana’s forests and benefit from the state’s long history of wood products manufacturing. The modern, high-tech mill will incorporate manufacturing capacity and flexibility to produce a wide variety of premium high-value wood products. The complex will include a log yard, sawmill,

lumber drying kilns, finishing planer, lumber storage and a rail spur. Plant commissioning will be a process, with first log through the sawmill expected late this year and finished product through the planer mill in the first quarter of 2023. The state’s abundant forests stretch across 14 million acres – 51 percent of its land area. An estimated 1 million tons of sawtimber, or 38,000 truckloads of logs, will be required each year to meet the mill’s annual production capacity of 250 million board feet of lumber. Before initiating the ceremonial turning of the soil, Tony Sheffield, President, Canfor Southern Pine, commented on the importance of partnerships in helping to realize the project. “Today’s celebration is not just a celebration of place; it’s also a celebration of leadership and vision. 5 LESSONS FOR ACHIEVING A SUCCESSFUL CAREER WITHOUT SACRIFICING HAPPINESS One bit of conventional wisdom has it that to achieve success people must take a nose-to-grindstone, burn-the-midnight-oil approach. Personal happiness is an afterthought – if it’s a thought at all. But that’s the wrong way to look at things, says Scott MacDonald, a seasoned CEO and author of Saving Investa: How An Ex-Factory Worker Helped Save One of Australia’s Iconic Companies. “Hard work absolutely is important, but I’ve met plenty of people who worked hard and never made much money or achieved satisfactory career objectives,” he says. “Working hard is just one part of the equation for success. You also need to be organized, plan, work smart, and choose to focus your effort where there’s reward.” From his decades of experience, MacDonald says he learned numerous lessons that helped him achieve both career success and personal happiness. Here are five of those lessons: DON’T EXPECT ANYONE TO GIVE YOU ANYTHING. In grade school and junior high, MacDonald earned money by doing yard work for neighbors, handling a paper route, and washing dishes at his junior high school. As a teenager, he bagged groceries, stocked shelves in a pharmacy, and worked in a fiberglass factory. “If you want something, work for it,” MacDonald says. “You will appreciate it more and not be indebted to anyone.”

YOU MAKE YOUR OWN LUCK. Former University of Texas football coach Darrell Royal was fond of saying, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” MacDonald agrees. “Nothing in my life that I can think of has been the result of luck.” LOSERS HAVE THE BEST EXCUSES. Winners find ways to succeed despite the many roadblocks and unexpected difficulties they encounter. People who are unsuccessful reach for excuses. “Whenever things go wrong, and things always go wrong at some point, look in the mirror for answers,” MacDonald says. “Successful people focus on what they can do to respond to setbacks and don’t waste time playing a blame game or feeling sorry for themselves.” PLAYERS SCORE POINTS, BUT TEAMS WIN GAMES. To be successful, any organization must have a culture of teamwork. Individual stars need to be supportive of the team concept, or those individuals should be moved on. MacDonald once fired a top chief financial officer who was good

at his job, but didn’t see the necessity of working with colleagues and was dismissive of others’ ideas. “The entire company performed better after he was gone,” MacDonald says. LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO DEAL WITH “JERKS.” No matter how important the project, if someone can’t deal with you professionally and ethically, just pass on the deal and move on. “There will be other deals,” MacDonald says. “I may have lost an occasional deal, but overall, my companies enjoyed good success and reputation, which led to other and better opportunities.” Ultimately, people can moan about how unfair the world is, he says, but all that griping won’t get them anywhere. “There’s no doubt the competitive work environment places huge pressures on your time and energy,” MacDonald says. “But the quicker you understand that you’re responsible for your own destiny, the happier you’re going to be.”

Technically, You MUST Be Correct Don’t get excited. I don’t mean that technically, everything you think and say is correct, although we would all like to think that is the truth. No one is, ever “technically,” correct all the time (with the possible exception of my granddaughter, who is perfect). What I am referring to is the fact that one of the things we often undersell in the fence industry is the technical side of our businesses. Look, we all know that not every customer or client really cares what gauges are appropriate for a commercial chain link fence, or what percentage of silicone is best for weatherproofing their wooden backyard fence. They are only concerned with the outcomes, not all of the details. But we have to be concerned with the details. We have to be technically correct, we have to know what products, of what size and strength, can with stand what wind speeds, in what parts of the country, or we can’t give our customers the outcomes they are paying for. Our ability to be “technically correct” should be part not only of our company brand, it should also be part of our industry brand. We need to be more proactive about telling customers at every level – homeowners, business owners, government agencies, major industrial clients – that the fence industry isn’t just made up of fence professionals, it’s also made up of fence experts. There is a right way to do everything in this industry, and that right way isn’t done by intuition and experience. It’s done by relying on information, and research, and testing, and science, and the transfer of knowledge, as well as skills. The fence industry spends millions (billions?) on technical research and development, not only to create new products but also to constantly be improving products that have been used in the industry for many years. We should be telling that story to everyone who influences buying decisions related to fencing and perimeter

security. There is a credibility factor – a trust factor – that is related to people and companies who are looked at as technical experts in their field. It is no accident that “Tech Support” is on the top of every single page of the CLFMI (Chain Link Fence Manufactures Institute) website (www.chainlinkinfo.org). Sure, CLFMI is trying to promote the greater use of chain link products, but they build the case for chain link not on any marketing slogan but on an image of trustworthiness, authority, and standing. By promoting the technical expertise of the chain link industry, they enhance the product’s believability. Indeed, CLFMI website statistics show that Tech Support is the most visited page, and that the technical documents on the site are the most downloaded items. Workforce training is a big issue in the fence industry. While it is easy for the general public to think that fence installers, or weaving machine operators, or gate fabricators, all have been taught some basic skills, they probably don’t have any idea that there is also a science to our industry, and that these workers need to be technically trained as well as mechanically trained. Our industry does a good job of selling the positive qualities of the various fencing systems from which customers can choose. We’re really missing out on another sales tool if we don’t also promote the fact that each of those positive qualities is based on very specific tested and proven methods of manufacturing and installation. Technically, we are correct. Let’s use that fact to more effectively advance the fence industry.

Chances are, you’re already volunteering. Think about it. The act of volunteering may be described as freely giving up time in order to do something for someone, like giving up a weekend to help an elderly neighbor with yard work, coaching the local Little League, serving as an usher at your church. Those could all be considered volunteer activities. And they’re not just good for the people or organization you are helping, volunteering is good for you.

Here’s how: • A Health and Volunteering study by UnitedHealth Group found that volunteering can have positive effects on one’s mental and emotional health. The report states that the “satisfaction that comes from assisting other people in need, drives a sense of purpose, and that purpose helps to create a sense of wellbeing and health.” • The study also found that volunteering helps manage and lower stress levels, which can lead to a better quality of life. • In addition to mental and emotional health benefits, Psychology Today reports that volunteers live longer and have healthier lives. Obtaining a purpose early in life and maintaining that purpose into one’s senior years is a key component to a happy and healthy life. • It’s a great way to meet people. Volunteering allows you to meet new people and network with likeminded individuals. Those benefits can also be applied to professional development and lead to new career opportunities. You can also obtain and polish job related skills. Working well with others is a must-have in the volunteer world, so team building exercises are often executed within volunteer groups. • Since volunteering is a great way to meet people, it’s only natural that it also provides great visibility for your business if you are a business owner or manager. There’s nothing wrong with choosing volunteer opportunities that also help you connect with people who might need your business services. • Now for the obvious: being a volunteer helps society. Many organizations would not survive without them.

Post Setting Fence Standards The ASTM Standards Committee: what is this? The committee’s responsibility is to review and develop material standards that meet the demands of the fence industry. The goal is to find common language to define fence and gate systems while maintaining safety requirements and security demands. The F14 committee has several subcommittees as well. Subcommittee F14.10 focuses on specific applications and other fence systems and components for wood fence and other nonmetallic/nonspecific components and fence products within special applications such as tennis courts, ball fields, swimming pools, temporary fence, etc. Subcommittee F14.15 is a new subcommittee focusing on Gates and Gate Hardware formed to oversee the review and development of guides and standards for all aspects of gate systems across the different materials used for fence. Subcommittee F14.30 focuses on Rigid Polymer Fence Systems. Subcommittee F14.40 focuses on Chain Link and Wire Accessories. Subcommittee F14.50 focuses on High Security Fence and Perimeter Barriers. ASTM International is a globally recognized leader in the development and delivery of voluntary consensus standards. Today, over 12,000 ASTM standards are used around the world to improve product quality, enhance health and safety, strengthen market access, and trade, and build consumer confidence. The above statement is the who and what is ASTM, so how does this affect the fence industry? The ASTM Standards for Fence Materials

and Products, 14th Edition is the backbone of what the fence industry is required to understand and provide at a minimum. These standards provide protection to the consumers that a professional fence installer has met or exceeded the products and installation standards that are outlined for the fence industry. As an industry we must adopt these standards and promote that your company installation meets or exceed the ASTM Fence Standards. We are trade professionals and as professionals we must hold ourselves and others to a higher standard and making the ASTM Fence Standards a priority, we will elevate our industry to the professional level we all strive for. A common discussion within the industry is Fence Post Setting Requirements, regarding post depth, diameter of hole required and frost line issues. The following is a quick reference for the professional fence contractor. Fence posts must be placed at the correct depth depending on the type of fence, how it will be used, the terrain and the soil type of the site. ASTM International has created specifications for post hole diameter and depth that correspond with each fence type (see below). Note: If the dimensions for diameter and depth are provided by the project specifications, these will supersede ASTM specifications. Wood Fence - ASTM Designation: F537-01 • Diameter - at least 4” larger than largest dimension/diameter of post • Depth - one-half the finished height of the

fence minus 6”, maximum 48” • Concrete collar footing with 4” larger diameter at base than at top of post hole for frost/expansion • Footings should extend at least 6” below frost line or bell bottom of hole Metal/Ornamental Fence - ASTM Designation: F537-01 • Diameter – three times the largest dimension/diameter of post with concrete support • Depth - one-half the finished height of the fence minus 6”, maximum 48” • Concrete collar footing with 4” larger diameter at base than at top of post hole for frost/expansion • Footings should extend at least 6” below frost line or bell bottom of hole Vinyl/PVC Fence - ASTM Designation: F-1999 – 00 • Diameter - at least 4” greater than largest cross section of the post • Depth – a minimum of 24” plus 3” for each 1’ increase in fence height over 4’ • Footings should extend at least 6” below frost line or bell bottom of hole Chain Link Fence - ASTM Designation: F567-07 • Diameter - Four times the post diameter for post 4” and under, and 3 times the post diameter for larger posts • Depth – minimum of 24” plus 3” for each 1’ of fence height over 4’ • Footings should extend at least 6” below frost line or bell bottom of hole

Driven posts are acceptable and should be driven by mechanical means to a minimum depth of 36 in. [914.4 mm] or 6 in [152.4 mm] greater than that called for in the height of the fence as outlined above. Where soil conditions are unstable or rock is encountered, the driven post embedment must be altered to maintain stability. The depth should be in keeping with standard fence construction practices for the local areas.
