Senstar Announces New Sensor Fusion Engine Driven By The Senstar Symphony™ Common Operating Platform

CASE STUDY:

Sleeve-It® Secures Fencing Throughout Urban Park THE CHALLENGE Fencing and railing placed at the top of retaining walls are critical to safety and are required by code in 48 states to prevent people from falling. Railing failures are a common challenge when placed near retaining walls and it can be tough to ensure these safety barriers meet building codes and are secure over time. The Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan, needed to ensure the fencing planned along retaining walls throughout its 20-acre campus would be safe now and in the future. Retaining walls were used on the campus to stabilize grade changes near an outdoor amphitheater, to stabilize a walkway between an irrigation pond and a ball field, and to fortify a steep slope between the park and a residential neighborhood. Engineers needed to ensure fencing along these walls would meet code and keep visitors safe for years to come. Placing a three-foot buffer zone between the fencing and the walls (a technique used in the past to meet code) would waste valuable space and was not always possible. THE SOLUTION The landscape architecture and site planning firm of RJM Design Inc. with their civil engineering consultant Driesenga & Associates Inc. turned to the Sleeve-It Rail Integration System from Strata to meet the fencing challenges. SleeveIt is a patented fence-post anchoring system that integrates stable fence footings into the support structure of retaining walls during construction. Landscape contractor Twin Lakes Nursery installed the Sleeve-It units as part of the retaining wall construction, maximizing time-efficiency and shortening construction time.

At the center’s amphitheater, a 4-foot-high black chain link fence was anchored with Sleeve-It above a 15-foot-tall x 300-foot-long vegetated retaining wall constructed of galvanized welded wire forms. In another area of the site, a block retaining wall would separate an irrigation pond and a baseball field. A 100-foot black, vinyl-clad chain link fence anchored with Sleeve-It units was installed at the top of the wall to provide a safe walkway protecting pedestrians and ball players. The same type of fencing was also placed above a large 12-foot to15foot-high block retaining wall, which reinforced a steep slope between the community center and a residential neighborhood. Again, the fencing was stabilized with Sleeve-It rail stabilization units spaced every 8-10 feet. RESULTS Thanks to good engineering and Sleeve-It, fencing throughout the community center is code compliant, providing long-term safety for the community and peace of mind for engineers, wall designers and community center managers. Rigorous laboratory and field-testing have proven that the Sleeve-It system’s design ensures load transfer from fence structures to reinforced soil and away from the face of segmental retaining walls. “I don’t know of another system that will ensure code compliant fencing with a retaining wall. It’s a great solution to solve safety issues and keep fencing from interfering with modular block retaining walls,” says Craig Newhouse of RJM Design.

The Best Fencing for Cold Climates will Stand up to the Elements Cold climates bring challenges for fences. Winter can affect the fencing material you use, causing it to break down or become fragile. One big challenge for wood fences in frost heaving, also called frost jacking. This happens when cold weather arrives and the moisture in the soil freezes, causing it to expand and push the posts out of their holes as it solidifies. The fence loses stability and strong winter winds can take down a whole fence affected by frost heaving. There are different solutions to this issue, but according to the fence professionals with Fortress Building Products, the most common recommendation is to ensure your posts or footers go at least a couple feet beneath the frost line. However, even if you dig that deep, some frost heaving may occur—especially with posts sunk in the ground—as the frost acts on the part of the post above the frost line. The surest solution is to pour concrete footers below the frost line that are wider at their base than at their top. This way, the expanding frost helps to lock them in place rather than work them loose. But the challenges that winter brings to your fencing don’t stop once you get above ground level. Winter affects wood mainly because it changes the humidity content of the air (air tends to be much drier in winter than summer), causing wood to shrink. Periods of wet followed by periods of dry weather can also cause cycles of shrinking and expanding that will push fasteners like nails and screws out of the fence and can cause boards and rails to come loose. Some materials, like vinyl fencing, are made of a material that doesn’t absorb water. Yet, as temperatures drop plastics enter a glassy state and become more brittle, making them prone to snapping upon sudden impacts (like slipping on frozen ground and trying to catch yourself on the fence). So what fencing material does do well in cold weather? The experts at Fortress Building Products offer some insight. From a purely structural standpoint, metals are the best material for cold weather fencing. The molecular structure of metals doesn’t absorb water, so they’re not as vulnerable to moisture-based swelling and shrinking. That’s not to say that water can’t work its way inside a metal fence, or that metal doesn’t contract. But water simply doesn’t saturate metals. There are a couple of fencing options that take advantage of this: Wood fences with metal posts have wooden pickets that are subject to the same water absorption and other problems as your average wooden fence. But by not depending on wooden posts to hold them up, the structure of these fences is sounder and lasts longer. A wood fence with metal posts should stay up through at least a few winters. Steel fences are steel through and through, with steel top rails, pickets, and posts. These are the fences that people are thinking of when they talk about a wrought iron fence. No parts of steel fences are prone to water absorption, but water can collect in joints and around fittings. It is very rare that expansion or contraction problems affect these fittings, but it can happen. Typically, steel fences have spaced pickets that allow strong winds through, making them good fences for windy areas such as the Great Plains and the coasts. Aluminum fences share many of the same properties as steel ones. They are also built with an eye toward the “wrought iron” look. These fences, however, are a lot lighter than their steel counterparts, and easier to install. There is a tradeoff in strength, though. Depending on the quality of the fence, aluminum fences can be more prone to denting and bending than steel is. Continued on p 32 30

Due to the potential issues that wood, vinyl, and aluminum fencing have in cold weather, the Fortress Building Products team recommends steel as a choice that will stand up best to winter year after year. Steel does need more than a thin coat of paint to do that, however and not all steel fences are created equal. There are several types of coatings that preserve steel from rusting away, and it is best to understand a little about them before you go looking for a steel fence:

PRE-GALVANIZATION Most steel that is meant for outdoor use is pre-galvanized right at the steel mill. This coat is a thin layer of zinc applied to the stock metal. You can actually see an example of this on most chain link fence posts. The mottled pattern you see on these posts is actually crystallized zinc. This pre-galvanization layer protects the metal from moisture which could cause rust, but it is very thin and can be easily scratched off. Cutting and welding in fabrication will actually remove the galvanization around the cuts and welds.

HOT-DIPPED GALVANIZATION This method involves adding a post-fabrication coat of zinc. In this process an entire piece, once assembled, is then dipped in molten zinc to coat it. This type of galvanization is much thicker than the pregalvanization coating that is usually applied straight from the mill, and it lasts longer. It is the industry-wide standard for small hardware such as outdoor screws and bolts. It is a sacrificial coating, meaning that as long as some zinc remains on the steel, the zinc will corrode instead of the steel. HDG is a rugged coating and works well on heavy-duty objects, but for something like a fence, the corrosion of the thick layer of zinc as it is ‘sacrificed’ can affect the paint or powder coating on top of the metal, causing unattractive white patches to form.

ELECTROPHORETIC DEPOSITION Also called an e-coat, this is an alternative to hot-dipped galvanization which uses a non-metallic coating. This method of coating relies on the e-coat particles having an opposing charge to the piece being coated. These particles are attracted to the metal due to this opposite charge and form a thin, uniform layer over it. E-coating creates a smooth, extremely durable, moisture-proof and non-sacrificial layer that can be safely coated with a paint or powder coat without any danger of galvanic corrosion. For this reason, the automotive industry uses this method of rustproofing on the underbellies of cars. The fact that e-coatings are designed to protect against road salt and other corrosive materials makes e-coated fences perfect for coastal areas. All of these coating systems are aimed more at rustproofing than they are at appearances, which means that once these coatings are applied, your fencing will need to be coated with an aesthetically appealing coat. While it is possible to paint over any of these coatings with traditional paint, this generally doesn’t work into the joints very well. Even with a primer coat, the odds are pretty good that the paint will still end up peeling off sooner or later. A better option is powder coating, which is applied as a layer of powder and then baked on to the metal. This forms a uniform layer that can vary in thickness as desired and tends to last quite a bit longer than traditional paint on most surfaces. Save Time and Money with Snow Fencing Depending on your location, you may already be dealing with snow. During the winter months most construction companies experience a reduction in available work. To combat the slow season, construction companies can look for new ways to help customers with products designed to alleviate issues associated with snow and cold weather. One great product to offer your customers is a snow fence. The team at FASCO,® a member of BECK, explains that a snow fence serves as a barrier and prevents snow from drifting into undesirable areas. Snow fences can provide benefits to both businesses and homeowners. The job of a snow fence is to cut the wind so that it doesn’t blow snow into drifts where it could create problems. Snow fencing is placed so that it prevents snow piling up on roads, parking lots, driveways, patios, or any other designated area. The snow fence redirects the windblown snow, which can reduce the amount of snow shoveling or plowing that needs to be done. In addition, a snow fence is a great way to collect snow so that when it melts it contributes to a pond, watering hole or fertile land within a property. Homeowners also use snow fencing around their home, especially if the property has a slope, to help keep melting snow from seeping into the foundation so the ground close to the home doesn’t become oversaturated, causing leaks or other problems. Snow fence is commonly made from plastic but can also be made from slat wood. Strategically placed bushes and trees can also serve as snow fencing. For a snow fence to be effective it needs to be installed upwind of the area that it is intended to keep clear. This involves studying the area to see which direction winds tend to blow. If you place it downstream of wind it will not be effective since snow will pile up inside the designated area instead of on the outside. In addition, there needs to be at least a five-inch gap under the fence to help distance where the drift starts to form. You can leave a bigger gap if you want the drift farther back. Keep in mind that winter winds are very powerful, so installation products, such as a quality power stapler and fasteners, are important. You want to be sure your snow fence can stand up to Old Man Winter, so quality installation is key. Amazing Fences Across the Globe Fences have both separated and brought people together throughout the history of the world. In the course of that history, there have been many amazing fences constructed. Here a closer look at just a few of these. THE OLDEST FENCE IN EUROPE Hadrian’s Wall, also known as the Roman Wall, in Great Britain is a former defensive fortification of the Roman province of Brittania, now modern-day England. Construction of the 73-mile stone wall began in 122 AD under the reign of the emperor Hadrian, along the border between England and Scotland. The wall reached as high as 19 feet in some places and up to 10 feet deep. Multiple forts and observation towers were part of the original construction. A significant portion of the wall still stands and it is the largest Roman archaeological feature in Britain.

GREAT WALL OF CHINA Perhaps more impressive than Hadrian’s Wall is the Great Wall of China. It took hundreds of years for China to build this wall as protection against various nomadic groups. The defensive system of the Great Wall is generally recognized as one of the most impressive architectural feats in history. Construction began in 600 B.C, and Chinese emperors continued to build it up until the mid-1600s. The entire wall was once more than 13,000 miles long. The wall’s height goes from 15 feet to 39 feet, and some sections are 32 feet thick.

OLDEST FENCE IN NEW YORK CITY The wrought iron fence surrounding New York City’s original Bowling Green was built in 1771 to protect the property from vandalism. LONGEST FENCE STILL IN USE Do you have six months of free time to just walk around the entire length of a fence? That’s how long you’d need to make a trip around the dingo fence in Southeast Australia. Designed to keep wild dingo dogs away from sheepherding lands, the dingo fence stretches more than 3,000 miles along the edge of Outback. LOCK FENCE While not actually a fence, the bridge railing in on the Pont des Arts bridge in Paris, France, became known as “Lock Fence.” It began to be ‘built’ in 2008, when love-struck tourists started attaching padlocks and key locks along the bridge. Stretching for around 155 meters, thousands of ‘love locks’ contained names and love messages, and visitors often threw keys into the river to further demonstrate their unbreakable bond. Unfortunately, in 2015, a twometer section collapsed under the immense weight of the locks, and the fence was replaced with glass paneling.

Potomac Edison Installs TransGard Fencing to Prevent Animal Intrusions at Substation TransGard fencing at Urbana substation deters climbing animals and protects equipment. Potomac Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., has installed new interior fencing at a substation in Urbana, Maryland, to help deter climbing animals and protect against electrical equipment interference that can cause power outages. The fencing from TransGard was installed around the 650-foot perimeter of the substation, which serves nearly 5,400 customers in Frederick and Montgomery counties. The fencing will help keep animals out of harm's way and electricity safely flowing to customers. Next to weather-related damage, animal intrusions are the most common cause of substation outages. Unlike other types of animal traps and deterrents, the special fencing prevents a wide range of climbing animals – including squirrels, raccoons, opossums, cats, frogs and others – from accessing the substation equipment and discourages them from trying again. We would like to offer you a recap of our Top of the Chain recipients. A few from when we began back in October, 2020 and those throughout this year. This collection of industry leaders has much to offer. OCTOBER, 2020 RICHARD STELLABUTO, IRON WORLD MANUFACTURING, LLC Iron World began in 2003. CEO and President Richard Stellabuto originally learned the craft from his father-in-law, Jack Long, who was head of his own company. Richard eventually developed his own vision of how to make improvements, and started his own manufacturing business, Iron World. Beginning in a 5,000 square foot building, Richard performed jobs day and night, and he handled all aspects: selling, estimating, making the product, sub-contracting as necessary for powder-coating, and then billing. Over the years Iron World has made deep capital investments in its state-of-theart powder coating line, which amazingly now encompasses roughly three football fields, and can produce over a mile of steel and aluminum finished fencing products on any given day. NOVEMBER, 2020 DAVID CALABRIA, D&D TECHNOLOGIES Founded in 1990 in Australia, the USA portion of D&D Technologies opened in 1996 and the European operation opened in 2003. David Calabria worked for D&D as a consultant from 1992, he officially joined as general manager in 1995 and became CEO in 2001. D&D started as a high-quality pool fence and balustrade company. The founders, David Doyle and Neil Dunne (hence the “D&D), became concerned with the amount of call-backs involving the poor-quality or ineffective gate latches and hinges used on critical applications such as pool fencing. They knew there had to be a better way, hence they created many latch and hinge innovations that revolutionized the gate hardware industry. Calabria worked in several industries before D&D and respects the uniqueness found within the fencing industry and admires all entrepreneurs who put everything on the line, year after year, and generation after generation. DECEMBER, 2020 TONY THORNTON, AMERICAN FENCE ASSOCIATION Tony Thornton with American Fence Association has worked with nearly every type of discipline within the industry, but he reflects that it’s not so much the disciplines that he enjoys, it’s the industry people. He says the fencing industry has some of the most robust, hard-working, honest and caring people that he genuinely enjoys spending time with. Tony implemented a business approach to the AFA; he and his staff focused their attention on the needs of the members

and membership numbers have increased from fewer than 800 members in 2014 to approximately 1600 at the end of 2020. The three main goals of AFA staff are to help members make money, save money, and minimize their risk. He invites anyone within the fencing industry to join AFA. JANUARY, 2021 PAT MOORE, SOUTHWESTERN WIRE Upon Pat Moore’s marriage to Max, she became involved in his family’s steel and wire business. Max was a founder of Southwestern Wire and Pat also helped him in virtually every aspect of business. After his tragic death, Pat stepped into a management role. David Weinand assumed the role of president and each team member stepped up and carried on. FEBRUARY, 2021 PAUL GERMAN, NEBRASKA PLASTICS Nebraska Plastics celebrated 75 years of business last year. It was founded in 1945 by Milo German. It is the oldest familyowned plastic extrusion company in North America. After a tragic airplane crash in 1957, leadership was handed over to Rex, Milo’s son. At the young age of 22, Rex continued the invention mindset with the company developing the first above-ground PVC gated irrigation pipe. Many other firsts were achieved, thanks to their innovation. Today,

Paul German is at the helm, continuing the creativity and leadership defined by his father and grandfather. In 2005, Paul owned his own fence company in Des Moines. His father had a stroke and while he recovered and was able to continue working, it caused the family to realize a plan was needed for transitioning the company. The siblings voted for Paul, so in 2006, he became vice president and was eventually promoted to president and CEO. He says being passionate about the industry, getting involved and hiring great people with that same passion are the keys to his success. MARCH, 2021 ANDREA HOGAN, FENCING SUPPLY GROUP Andrea Hogan , formerly with Merchants Metals and now with Fencing Supply Group, says authenticity and curiosity are characteristics that are necessary for good leadership. She began her career working for her father, running maintenance storerooms for Coors Brewing, Black+Decker, Kraft Foods and others. She held various roles that culminated with being named CEO of Merchants Metals at the time of our Top of the Chain feature in March. Since then, Merchants Metals was sold to The Sterling Group, and a new platform was created called Fencing Supply Group, of which Andrea is the CEO. Shortly after FSG was formed, it purchased Binford Supply and has since made a handful of additional acquisitions. Andrea testified on Capitol Hill in 2015 in favor of the National Strategic Agenda, an effort to advance goals and solutions for America’s workforce. She said being invited to testify was one of the greatest honors of her life, and she saw it also as her duty. To bring her business experience and speak directly to federal lawmakers about supporting economic growth was a monumental moment. She says the best advice for someone new to the fencing industry is to learn, learn, learn. Understand all aspects of perimeter security; from the bills of materials and the supply chain to installation and access control. Andrea says leadership is learned and developed over time and by just diving in and learning from mistakes. APRIL, 2021 MIKE LEVY, NATIONAL METAL INDUSTRIES As vice-president with National Metal Industries, Mike Levy’s involvement within the industry came through a love of trade shows and his family’s hardware store. Mike’s grandfather, Milton, opened the hardware store in Brooklyn, New

York during the 1940’s. Mike’s father, Norman, started running the store when he was 16 years old, transforming the hardware store into a fence supply company. The store location eventually moved to Long Island, New York. Mike’s mother, Marie, became owner in 2009. Mike’s earliest national tradeshow was FENCETECH in New Mexico when he was 13 years old. As he got older, the shows provided inspiration, he would go back to work the following week with fresh ideas of how to improve the business. He says getting involved with the local chapter of the fence association has been a big benefit by helping him get to know other fence associates and make valuable connections. MAY, 2021 JON BALL, BALL FABRICS The leadership at Ball Fabrics is a triumvirate, made up of Jon Ball, his brother Larry, and his father Dale. Jon’s older brother, Larry, started the business in 1987. Jon spent summers in high school in the back of the plant, cutting and grommeting, and installing windscreen and netting out in the field. After college, he worked at Ball Products as customer service, and in 1999, he started and headed up the commercial fence division. In 2006, he stepped into the role of vice president of operations / president. He says their unique management style allows the three owners to each manage their divisions, but make major decisions as one unit. Some of their high-profile projects include covering large portions of 2nd Avenue in Manhattan during the initial phase of Second Avenue Subway. Ball Fabrics’ privacy screen has been used on fences throughout the US military base at Guantanamo Bay. They’ve also printed staging and fence graphics for the 4th of July celebration at the Capitol and for the City of Philadelphia’s 4th of July concert and fireworks. JUNE, 2021 JOE HAYNES, LITTLE BEAVER Little Beaver is a fourgeneration business. Located in Livingston, Texas, the company’s 30 employees work within a close-knit environment, with long-term customers and family values. Little Beaver began in 1947 by Newman Haynes, Joe’s grandfather. Newman made his first mower attachment for his friend’s tractor. It inspired him to enter the manufacturing business. Newman’s son, B.R., took the leadership role in the late 1950’s. B.R. expanded Little Beaver into new markets and increased sales. The company was handed over to Joe

and his brother, John in the mid 1980’s. The brothers have refined the process, expanded product lines and improved equipment. Joe says the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well at Little Beaver; they continue to innovate accessories and new products to help customers. They take pride in providing products that will help fencing contractors get their jobs done quickly and safely. JULY, 2021 PETER WILLIAMS, JR., EASTERN FENCE Founded by Peter Williams, Sr., in 1971, Eastern Fence celebrated its 50th anniversary this year. Putting nuts and bolts into frame hinges was Peter Williams, Jr.’s first job at the age of five, giving him an early introduction to the working world. Growing up, he worked in all areas, including fittings, loading and unloading trucks, as well as driving trucks and working in the purchasing department. After college, while working at a large accounting firm, his father invited him to work with him at Eastern Fence as Chief Financial Officer. By focusing on smart business moves, they’ve fine-tuned their products and offerings, which promoted growth and a solid business foundation. In 2017, Peter Williams, Sr. left the business while Peter Williams, Jr. and his incredible team continued on to grow the company . NOVEMBER, 2021 AL MARTINS, FENCE ARMOR Al Martins had to replace his fence due to extensive weed trimmer damage. After doing so, he noticed damage again. With a background in engineering, his business partner, Luis, and he created Fence Armor to protect the bottom of his fence. That was the beginning of Fence Armor in 2008. Al and Luis are also the founders of CAM Solutions, an engineering company. Al says Fence Armor wouldn’t exist without CAM Solutions. Both companies are intrinsically connected. Al is president of the North American Fence Contractors Association. One of their annual projects is the annual fence restoration at Arlington National Cemetery. Paying respects and giving honor to the servicemen and women who gave their all is important, he says. His mindset about business is you get what you give. He and his team endeavor to provide the best for their customers. He also believes a successful business will always have growth in mind, even when it brings challenges. t n e m e g a n r e a M orn C PREVENTING INVOICE FRAUD AT YOUR BUSINESS NAMES If it can happen to Google, Amazon and Facebook, then it can happen to your business. These mega-corporations were all victims of business invoice fraud, resulting in millions of dollars lost through the payment of fraudulent invoices. Business Invoice fraud, also referred to as business email compromise (BEC) has increased dramatically – over 350 percent – since the COVID-19 pandemic began, resulting in the loss of billions of dollars. Fake invoice scams are a simple but effective way that criminals are stealing money from unsuspecting businesses. Scammers send fraudulent invoices to businesses for goods or services they never ordered, then pocket the payment. The scam succeeds mainly because the invoices look legitimate and unsuspecting employees who process them don’t look closely enough to see it’s not real. Every business, regardless of size, deals with numerous invoices every day, with more and more of these being received and paid electronically. This makes it easier for a fake invoice to slip through.” There are some red flags to watch for the can help you spot invoice fraud. These criminals are smart. The invoices they send will look similar in format, and even in name, to legitimate invoices, but there are some warning signs you can look for if you are vigilant.

Verify the company name and recipient name on each invoice. Criminals will often use a similar name or change just one letter in a name so it will slip by.

AMOUNT BILLED Look at the amounts. Compare the amount billed with what was ordered. Be suspicious of evenly rounded amounts that are billed and duplicate amounts on an invoice.

OTHER NUMBERS Examine other numbers on the invoice, such as account numbers, invoice numbers and addresses. This will often be off by one number or have a series of consecutive numbers, such as 12345 instead of a real account number or address.

LOGO Check the logo on the invoice. Instead of normal invoice format, false invoices may have a logo in a white box that looks more pasted onto the form. Some may have a logo that looks close in design to one for a real company you do business with, but is slightly off.

Unfortunately, invoice fraud is becoming more common, and tougher to spot. Having a process in place for carefully screening invoices and getting approval by more than one person before invoices are paid, especially for electronic payments, is something that will help prevent financial loss from invoice fraud. It’s worth taking the extra time to protect your company’s finances.

WAYS TO BOUNCE BACK FROM A MISTAKE ON THE JOB

Blunders, slip-ups, gaffes, errors—whatever the label, mistakes happen every day. Little snags come up, you deal with them, and move along. But when you mess up at work, and it’s a big deal, it’s tempting to crawl under your desk and hide. Mistakes happen. After all, we’re human and juggling tasks simultaneously. As much as we want to appear as a superhero to our fellow co-workers, and most of all, the boss, sometimes it all falls apart. We hit ‘reply all’ in an email where we’ve written something, well, not meant for all. We don’t get the package shipped on time for a critical meeting. We approve a project that has a huge error in it. The bottom line is, we messed up. Now what do we do? Resist the urge to hide under your desk. Even though we want to bury it, if it causes your boss or your company to look bad, you need to own up to it. It’s helpful to know that most people over-react to their own mistakes. The incident looms over their heads like a giant balloon and it’s hard to see past it. In reality, most blunders can be turned into a learning experience, provided it’s acknowledged and everyone moves forward. Here are some steps for turning goof-ups into golden opportunities: OWN IT. Don’t try to blame others. If it was a group mistake, at least take responsibility for your part of it. Excuses aren’t helpful at this point. Depending on the error and the type of job, the time immediately after an error is likely the most critical. Roll up your sleeves and do everything you can to correct it. ACCEPT THE FALLOUT. Your boss might be angry. You may look incompetent. You may lose respect. All you can do is learn from it and move on. Chances are, those around you will understand and you’ll all take away a valuable lesson from the experience. It may take time to repair the damage, but be patient and continue to work hard. OFFER A SOLUTION TO AVOID FUTURE MISTAKES. This mistake could shine a light on the problem of not double-checking enough. Perhaps a few minutes of quality control would prevent it from happening in the future. If so, that’s a great example of how you can turn a mistake into something helpful in the future.

KEEP IT IN PERSPECTIVE. In most cases, you haven’t caused irreparable damage. Zoom out from the situation; maybe after the dust settles, you can find the humor or at least the positive side. Don’t beat yourself up. Everyone makes mistakes. It’s how we learn the best lessons. Take the opportunity to learn what you can from it and keep moving forward. After you’ve accepted responsibility and handled the aftermath, it’s time to demonstrate to your boss that you’ve made changes. It will help reassure them that you’re on top of the situation now. One of the worst things to do after making a significant mistake is to become defensive or blame others. It will only deepen the pit and make it much more difficult for you to climb out with dignity. Mistakes aren’t a sign of weakness. In fact, for those who learn from them, blunders can help make a good employee even better. They become more conscientious and resilient. They’ve weathered the storm and came out ahead.

Common “Cents” on Managing your Company’s Money

IT IS DECEMBER, AND AS USUAL, THOUGHTS TURN TO CHRISTMAS, HOLIDAY PARTIES, FUN AND FAMILY. EVERYONE IS TRYING TO FORGET THE TROUBLES OF THE PAST FEW YEARS AND THIS CRAZY PANDEMIC, AND INSTEAD, COUNTING BLESSING AND GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY, FAMILY AND FRIENDS. EVEN THOUGH IT’S NOT AS JOLLY, IT’S ALSO A TIME FOR YEAR-END ACCOUNTING, TO TALLY THE GAINS AND LOSSES FOR THE YEAR. For obvious reasons, financial controls are among the most important concerns and a principal responsibility of owners and managers, and they can be the most misunderstood. Your company’s finances, like your own, have basic roots in simple common “cents”, but in the business world, things can and do get more complicated. How you control your company’s money, coming in and going out, is critical. To do this, you need the right tools and the proper understanding of those tools. The operative word here is “control”. Good accounting and sound financial controls start with setting up your business’ finances the right way in the first place so that you can track the important things. You do not want a financial system that is only convenient for your accountant to use for tax preparation while falling short of providing the fight financial management you need. You want a system that allows you to see where you are going as a company and plan for your company’s financial future and for your profits. As a business owner or manager, you need to be able to manage your money, know where it is coming from and exactly where it is going. And, you must budget your profit. You must know that your profit is going to be there at the end of each 54

and every year, not something you just hope you find after twelve months of hard work. Good financial controls begin with a correctly established chart of accounts, which is simply a numbering or ordering system used to keep track of all the money that comes in or goes out of a business. As the owner or manager, you need to know the answers to such questions as: Is there any unnecessary waste in the company and where is it? Have expenses dramatically changed in any area of the company without your knowledge? Which crews are making you the most money and which ones are not productive? Which jobs are truly the most profitable.? Are all your jobs contributing to the overhead of the company? Do you know what your true overhead factor is? Are all members of your sales staff quoting only profitable work for the company? Do you have an accurate labor burden figure for every employee in the company? Do you know exactly where your break-even point is? These are just a few of the many financial control questions that you need to be able to answer if you are properly managing your company’s money.

This end-of-the-year time is a good time to establish, or re-establish your company’s chart of accounts. Most fencing companies operate their physical year simultaneously with the calendar year running from January 1 to December 31. Which is why now is a great time to discuss this topic, since any changes you may want to make in how you manage your company’s money must be made in the next few weeks. Every time money is spent or money is received by the company, that transaction must be recorded; it’s usually the responsibility of the bookkeeper. In establishing a sound chart of accounts, certain categories of expenses are necessary to provide an overview of areas in which control is needed, and to facilitate the calculation of percentages that will be used in determining pricing, costing, labor burdens, overhead calculations, and even accurate profit margins, along with analyzing crew and job productivity, transportation costs, labor costs, true materials costs, etc. This, along with a comprehensive income statement, will give management a clear picture of the financial condition of the company and establish a sound basis for budgeting and control.

Here’s an example: a fencing company has five crews with a chart of accounts set up by an accountant to track expenses of the crew and their vehicle, but they are all grouped into one large expense account. One of the crews is cheating by charging his personal gas and car repair to the company. Over the course of the year, that expense amounts to $10,000. Your chart of accounts only shows an increase in operating expenses for all crews, and you may incorrectly attribute this extra $10,000 to a simple increase in the cost of doing business. However, if you were tracking the expenses of the individual crews, you would immediately notice a sharp increase in the expense of one crew and not the other four, which would identify the problem.

Standing Out from the Crowd I am among the many people who cannot figure out what happened to all the workers who were staffing jobs in the construction industry before the pandemic hit. Of course, I realize that they could not go over a year (in some cases) without working at all and had to find other work. But, I am just naïve enough to think to myself: “Did ALL of them find better paying, more satisfying jobs? Did NONE of them come back into the industry when things started to pick up? Was our industry unable to attract and keep ANY of those hospitality, restaurant, and other service industry workers who came to us during the worst of the COVID crisis?” There are plenty of theories about why jobs in our industry are going unfulfilled, including the fact that parts of the fence industry created some new jobs in the past two years, and it is going to take a while to get those people in place. But there is something more basic that has changed, or is changing, in the workplace that we have not dealt with yet. We need to stop saying, “We’re hiring.” Yes, I know we ARE hiring, but so (apparently) is everyone else. So, when the signs in our window or on our website, or on our trucks say, “We’re Hiring”, we are just another company competing for the same pool of workers as all the other companies in the fence industry. Potential employees see, “We’re Hiring” and the first (maybe only?) question they have is, “How much are you paying?” Now, we are down to a bidding war. Even if they accept the job, there are no assurances that your new employee won’t jump to the next employer as soon as that company says, “We’re hiring, and we’re paying three dollars an hour more than the job you just took.” What we need to say – and believe – is, “We’re investing. We’re investing money (your salary), time (your training), and resources (your employee benefits) in your career.” Now, some people may be confused by that message, or think it is just a way of dressing up, “We’re hiring.” The exact words you use to get their attention are up to you. The most important thing is to believe it because it’s true, and more importantly, to communicate the message well enough to your potential employees that they believe it, too. Then, you need to deliver on your promise. It is extremely easy to look back at the backlog of work most fence industry companies have right now and concentrate on finding enough workers to fill jobs and complete projects as best we can. That’s not going to stop this worker shortage situation from changing in the long run. The only way to do that is to develop an effective program of employee recruitment, recognition, and retention. Here are some things you can do to get things going:

Google “Careers in the fence industry in (your city). See where your company shows up, if it does at all. It is probably not on the first page of Google, and less than 10% of Google users ever go beyond the first page. Hiring someone to upgrade your social media and online presence may be a worthwhile investment in your future ability to attract good employees. Be seen by potential employees. According to Forbes magazine, 65% of young people say they visit YouTube every day. Is your company there? Testimonials DO work. Use them. According to socialfresh.com (May 2021), “customer testimonials have the highest effectiveness rating for content marketing at 89%.” It means that testimonials are the most effective type of content you can put on your website to get more responses from potential employees. Every company has employees (i.e., Alvin Sharp at Davis Wire) with terrific stories to tell about how a career in the fence industry (manufacturing, distribution, sales, contracting, etc.) has helped them create a better quality of life. Let them tell that story to potential employees via a very brief video clip on your website and in your social media. Work with your industry association. whether it is CLFMI, AFA, NOMMA, NAFCA, etc. to see if your company can participate in what those groups are doing to create a bigger pool of employees for the industry. Use this opportunity to infuse diversity and new energy into your company. Showing that the fence industry can provide a wide range of career opportunities is a wonderful way to reach out to new audiences and expand the pool of talent on your team. Don’t wait to see who walks in the door or responds online. Focus some of your efforts where the untraditional collection of potential employees might lie. This industry problem is not going away any time soon. To build a truly robust, successful, and forward-thinking industry, we need to embrace a culture of investing in careers, not just hiring new people.

In Memory of Gordon Clark Gordon “Gordy” Clark, owner of GC/AAA Fences Inc., Vinyl Fences, Inc., and Granite State Grate Systems, Inc., passed away suddenly on September 28, 2021. Gordy began his fencing career in 1970 working for White Mountain Fence in Dover, New Hampshire. He started Northeast Fence in the mid 80’s, then emerged as GC Fence Erectors, merging with AAA Fences completed the transition to what GC/AAA Fences is today. In 2001, Gordy’s vision for the exploding vinyl industry led him to purchase a router from CMM and begin fabricating for GC/AAA, which grew in 2003 into a new state-of-the-art building to service the tri-stage area as Vinyl Fences, Inc., a wholesale vinyl fabricator. In 2003, always looking to improve and improvise vinyl parts, he invented the one piece pergola cap, Sunset Solar Light, a railing foot bracket and a wall mount bracket. Gordy was a member of the Westech Advisory Council from 2004 – 2007, where he established lifelong business and personal relationship with many of his peers. Seeing the need for a full-service automated gate company in 2004, he created Granite State Gate Systems, Inc. In 2010, he obtained a US patent for a steel insert system for structural pergolas His passion for the fence industry was well-known and he loved designing new parts and ideas to make the job easier to install and look better. His knowledge was passed to many friends, associates, and employees. Gordy considered all those who worked for and with him as family and was a generous and caring owner. His vision allowed GC/AAA Fences to become one of the premier fence companies in New England. Gordy loved his family, gardening and helping others. He was generous with his time, sharing his knowledge with many people. He will be greatly missed.
