PVC and composite fencing are redefining expectations for durability, appearance and lifetime value. In this special section, Fence News takes a closer look at some of the products and technologies shaping the future of high-performing, low-maintenance fencing.

BUILT TO LAST: Cap Composite Fencing Meets Growing Demand for Performance Materials

Frame It All’s Cap Composite fencing is drawing noteworthy attention in the fencing industry as a durable, low-maintenance alternative to traditional wood. As homeowners and contractors seek materials that stand up to weather, time and wear, Cap Composite presents a compelling option.

Developed by Frame It All, a 29-year-old company with deep roots in outdoor living products, Cap Composite fencing combines recycled plastic and wood fiber to create a composite material that resists the common failings of wood. According to Anthony Topping, founder and president at Frame It All, “The material was engineered to meet growing demand for a maintenance-free fence that still looks like real wood. Traditional wood may look great at first, but rot, warping, cracking, and staining can make it less appealing, especially

for today’s busy homeowners and businesses. Our goal was to offer a solution that holds up and doesn’t demand constant upkeep.”

While composite fencing has existed in Europe for more than a decade, Frame It All refined its formulation and manufacturing process to achieve a balance between strength, longevity, and visual appeal. The company is a pioneer in capped composite fencing boards, which feature an outer shell that protects the inner composite core and enhances resistance to moisture and UV exposure.

“The ‘cap’ in Cap Composite is more than just a name,” Topping explains. “It’s a protective shield designed to keep the boards looking new decades after installation. That’s why we back it with a 30-year warranty.”

One of the standout offerings in the lineup is Frame It All’s cap composite pickets. Available

in a variety of colors and sizes, they allow customers to create everything from privacy panels to semi-open decorative fencing. Like the larger boards, the pickets resist splitting, splintering, insects, fading and staining while maintaining long-term color and performance.

“This gives contractors a truly high-end option for customers who want the classic picket look or a sleek modern style with black aluminum posts,” says Topping. “They can offer something that feels traditional but performs like a modern material… a fence they’ll be proud to put their name on.”

Industry research shows rising demand for fencing products that reduce lifetime costs, not just upfront expense. Composite materials meet this need by delivering long service life, lower maintenance, and added property value similar to the impact composite decking has had on homes.

As the industry continues shifting toward performancedriven materials, capped composites are among the most practical alternatives to wood, especially in climates with moisture and temperature extremes. Topping says Frame It All’s Cap Composite fencing delivers that next generation of durability, beauty, and reliability and is available through local fence product distributors nationwide. “If your distributor doesn’t carry it, they can typically have it within a few days."

CATALYST™ FENCE SOLUTIONS UNVEILS CONTRACTORFIRST AR TOOL AND NEW MANCHESTER FENCE AT FENCETECH 2026

New visualization technology, AlumiCast™ surface technology and composite fence innovations help contractors sell with confidence and scale their business

Catalyst™ Fence Solutions put innovation front and center at FENCETECH 2026, debuting new technology and product advancements that reinforce the company’s commitment to redefining what’s possible for fence contractors. By pairing advanced digital tools with the industry’s broadest portfolio of fence products, Catalyst continues to focus on helping contractors work more efficiently, sell with confidence and win more jobs.

Exhibiting at the annual convention and tradeshow of the American Fence Association, Catalyst previewed a new augmented reality (AR) visualization and instant estimating tool. Designed to fundamentally change how fence projects are sold, the platform connects real-time visualization and estimating directly to the products contractors already rely on – including material types and styles not available through other manufacturers and AR platforms.

Catalyst, the largest provider of high-performance vinyl, aluminum, composite and mixed material fences, and the only provider of molded fencing products in North America, will also officially launch Catalyst Manchester Fence, featuring the new AlumiCast™ surface technology.

Together, the AR platform and the launch of Manchester Fence with AlumiCast demonstrate how Catalyst is aligning digital tools and physical products to help contractors sell more confidently, bid more competitively and deliver better outcomes for homeowners.

BRINGING THE FUTURE OF FENCE SALES TO THE JOBSITE

Catalyst’s upcoming AR tool allows contractors to walk a property line with a homeowner, visualize the finished fence in real time and generate an estimate on the spot, with just a phone or tablet. Built around Catalyst’s expansive product portfolio, the tool enables contractors to confidently show a wider range of materials, styles, colors and heights than any single-brand or thirdparty platform. Unlike generic visualization tools, the Catalyst AR platform will integrate estimating logic with real product data, with future plans to incorporate real-time pricing and inventory visibility. This ensures estimates are not only fast, but grounded in the materials contractors can actually source and install.

Early testing indicates the tool can help contractors reach decisions 35–40% faster, increase close rates to 75–80%, and improve estimating accuracy. This creates more productive sales conversations and more confident homeowners.

“Contractors shouldn’t have to bend their business to fit new technology,” says Chris Hayn, executive vice president, Oldcastle APG – Fence, Rail and Deck. “We’re building this tool around the way contractors already sell, using the products they trust and across more material options than anyone else

offers. Our goal is simple: help contractors quote faster, sell smarter and win more jobs.”

The tool is scheduled to launch in Spring 2026.

ALUMICAST™ SURFACE TECHNOLOGY:

BUILT TO HELP CONTRACTORS WIN MORE JOBS

Catalyst’s product innovation strategy mirrors its technology roadmap: give contractors better tools to sell, install and profit with confidence. At FENCETECH, that commitment came to life with the launch of AlumiCast™ surface technology, a new approach that delivers the architectural appeal of aluminum with the performance and durability advantages of composite materials.

By combining the proven Composicore® composite material with a new proprietary aluminum-look cap layer, AlumiCast expands Catalyst’s low-maintenance portfolio with premium architectural aesthetics – without splitting, rotting, warping or molding. The technology allows contractors to offer a refined aluminum appearance while delivering long-term performance homeowners can trust.

The technology debuts in Catalyst Manchester Fence with AlumiCast, a reimagined take on the classic aluminum Manchester design. Featuring the bold, contemporary profile homeowners expect, Manchester delivers a highgloss aluminum look with the install efficiency and durability of composite. The result is a fence system that helps contractors streamline installations, reduce callbacks, and deliver consistently high-quality projects.

“Our upcoming AR platform and introduction of Manchester Fence with AlumiCast reflects our long-term commitment to delivering better tools, better products and more ways for contractors to grow their businesses,” continues Hayn. “We’re changing the way the world fences by putting smarter technology and stronger materials directly in contractors’ hands.”

COMPANY SPOTLIGHT: GREENWOOD FENCE

Greenwood Fence’s story began in 2019 with the opening of a single 500-square-foot showroom on a busy Chicago street corner. At the time, composite fencing was virtually unknown to most homeowners. But once customers could see and touch the product, and understand that modern design, durability, and low maintenance didn’t have to be mutually exclusive, interest quickly turned into demand.

That early response validated the concept. Within the company’s first year, approximately 85 % of sales came from retail homeowners. But the three partner/owners soon recognized a larger opportunity. While the showroom proved the product’s appeal, long-term growth would depend on putting Greenwood Fence systems into the hands of contractors, distributors, and fence companies nationwide.

That shift became a defining moment. Greenwood Fence transitioned from a retail-first model into a contractor-driven operation, and growth accelerated. Today, roughly 90 percent of sales flow through professional partners, supported by an active national network of more than 1,000 contractors and distributors. Products have now shipped to every U.S. state, with select distribution into Canada.

Facility growth followed demand. Greenwood Fence expanded from 5,500 square feet to 12,000, and then to its current 18,000-squarefoot warehouse and showroom footprint – each move triggered by increased sales, deeper inventory needs, higher fulfillment volume, staff growth and showroom traffic. Plans are already underway for another expansion, doubling the company’s footprint to support continued residential growth and its recently launched commercial division.

At the core of Greenwood Fence’s success is product discipline. Rather than relying on marketing claims, the company has built its reputation on third-party testing and validation through organizations such as SGS and Intertek. Products undergo rigorous testing for wind load, strength, water absorption, simulated weathering and environmental compliance, with powder coating standards aligned with Qualicoat Class 2 and AAMA 2604. Quality control extends to random container inspections and checks on every component prior to shipment.

The product ecosystem has grown just as intentionally. Greenwood Fence now offers approximately 300 component SKUs and more than 70 finished product SKUs, designed as a complete system rather than standalone parts. Innovation milestones include a climateadaptive gate and post system engineered to accommodate seasonal movement, as well as the upcoming launch of the GWF Aluminum Collection, which preserves Greenwood Fence’s design language while meeting non-combustible requirements.

National visibility has followed. In 2022, Greenwood Fence was discovered through organic social growth and featured in two HGTV Inside Out episodes, showcasing modular composite fencing in realworld installations. Strategic creator partnerships helped expand awareness beyond the Midwest, fueling broader contractor adoption. Retail expansion has been equally deliberate, with Greenwood Fence currently available in 15 Home Depot states; launched regionally first, then scaled outward.

Despite its growth, Greenwood Fence continues to differentiate itself through service. Typical ship lead times average three to five days, with transit ranging from four to nine days depending on location. More importantly, every order is inspected before leaving the warehouse, and contractors receive hands-on support throughout quoting, design, and installation.

From a single showroom to a nationwide network, Greenwood Fence has grown by listening, testing, refining and releasing, proving that scale, innovation, and partnership can coexist in a category ready for modern thinking.

Why PVC & Composite Gates Demand the Right Hardware HINGES THAT HOLD UP

As PVC and composite fencing continue to grow in popularity across residential and commercial applications, contractors are increasingly focused not only on appearance, but on long-term performance as well. While these materials offer durability, low maintenance, and clean aesthetics, they also behave differently than traditional wood or metal. One of the most important considerations is movement.

PVC and composite materials naturally flex and expand with changes in temperature – and without the right gate hardware, that movement can quickly lead to sagging, misalignment, premature failure, and more. That’s why hinges play such a critical role in keeping gates stable, functional, and looking good over time.

Inside sales & service manager Rich Hornack of Nationwide Industries® agrees, saying, “Hinges are doing far more work on PVC and composite gates than most people realize. You’re not just hanging a gate; you’re managing movement, weight and repeated use across all kinds of weather conditions.”

Nationwide Industries’ hinge collection is engineered with those realworld conditions in mind and is backed by a Million Cycle Warranty on select specialty hinge products – a clear indicator of the durability and performance contractors expect from critical gate hardware. Adjustable hinges allow installers to fine-tune alignment during installation and make corrections as materials shift over time. Heavy-duty polymer and coated steel options resist corrosion and stand up to UV exposure, moisture, and daily use. Features like self-closing tension control and vertical adjustability give contractors flexibility without sacrificing strength.

According to Hornack, a few hinge styles consistently stand out for PVC and composite applications. “I always recommend hinges that allow for post-install adjustment,” he explains. “Being able to dial in the gate after seasonal changes can save contractors callbacks and keep customers happy long after the install.”

Beyond performance, hinges also contribute to the overall finish of the fence system. Clean lines and thoughtful design help maintain the polished look homeowners expect from PVC and composite fencing, without compromising function.

As fencing materials evolve, hardware must evolve with them. Choosing hinges specifically designed to accommodate movement, weight and long-term wear isn’t just a best practice; it’s essential to delivering a gate that performs year after year.

With a comprehensive hinge lineup and a Million Cycle Warranty that reinforces long-term confidence, Nationwide Industries® continues to set the standard for gate hardware built to meet the demands of modern fencing.

VINYL FENCING: A Smart, Lasting Choice for Today’s Homeowners

Vinyl fencing remains one of the most popular choices for homeowners upgrading their backyard spaces. It combines durability, style, and low maintenance into one long-lasting solution, whether the goal is privacy, safety, or a clean, finished look. From classic white privacy fences to modern woodgrain tones, vinyl can complement almost any backyard aesthetic allowing homeowners to match their fence to their home’s look and landscaping.

GreenWay Fence & Railing Supply provides contractors and their customers with highquality PVC fencing designed to enhance both the appearance and functionality of outdoor spaces. Specializing in the fabrication of vinyl fence and railing, GreenWay also offers decking and porch-related products that help create inviting, finished backyards.

“With a strong focus on quality, dependable service, and attention to detail, each order is carefully fabricated and packaged to arrive ready for installation,” says Ray Yoder, general manager at GreenWay. “Our customers feel confident working with a company that values clear communication, reliable delivery, and long-lasting products.”

Yoder says one of the biggest factors in the popularity of vinyl fencing is that maintenance is minimal and it does not require staining, painting, or frequent repairs. “Vinyl fences retain their appearance for years, often needing nothing more than an occasional rinse with water,” he explains. “Backed by limited to lifetime warranties, vinyl offers peace of mind for busy homeowners.”

Designed to withstand harsh weather conditions, vinyl resists warping, rot, and insect damage that can affect other fence material over time. Yoder says this durability makes it a smart, long-term investment. Vinyl fencing is also available in a wide range of styles, heights, and colors, allowing homeowners to customize their outdoor space to match their home.

“In addition, vinyl does not splinter or crack, making it a safe option for families with children and pets,” adds Yoder. “GreenWay PVC is American made and recyclable, making it a responsible choice for homeowners who value quality craftsmanship and sustainability.”

Vinyl fencing remains a dependable choice for homeowners looking to invest in a fence that stands the test of time. With strong construction, attractive color options, and longlasting materials, GreenWay helps create backyard spaces that can be enjoyed with confidence.

HOW AN INFLUENCER’S BACKYARD UPGRADE HIGHLIGHTS THE CONTRACTOR OPPORTUNITY IN COMPOSITE FENCING

Ashley Quintero of @ShestheCarpenter is no stranger to Trex products – or to tackling ambitious outdoor projects. In 2022, she teamed up with fellow home improvement influencer Charlee Ostrander of Build & Create Home to build a floating Trex deck in her Texas backyard. The project was a showstopper. The only problem? The new deck made Quintero’s aging, patchedtogether wood fence look worse than ever.

Replacing that rotting old fence had been on Quintero’s wish list since she moved in. Years of repairs, including wood boards reinforced with bricks and mismatched fixes, had created what she jokingly referred to as her “Frankenstein fence.” Structurally compromised and visually distracting, it no longer fit the outdoor space she had worked so hard to elevate.

For decking and fencing contractors, Quintero’s story is a familiar one – and the perfect inspiration for a natural selling opportunity. A major upgrade – like a new deck or patio – often becomes the catalyst for replacing an old fence. The question isn’t if homeowners will replace it, but when, and what material they’ll trust to give them performance and beauty. .

COMPOSITE FENCING VS. WOOD

Quintero knew she wanted something different this time around. Her wood fence demanded constant maintenance and still looked tired. Having already worked extensively with Trex decking and railing, she began exploring composite fencing as an alternative to wood.

“I chose Trex® Fencing because of its reputation for being durable and low maintenance,” Quintero explains. “I wanted a solution that would look great for years, without needing constant upkeep. This is not my first Trex product, so I knew I would be getting a premium material.”

That mindset is increasingly common among today’s homeowners. They’re doing their homework, comparing materials online, and prioritizing long-term value over short-term savings. For contractors, that creates a clear opportunity to lead the conversation – and the upsell – with composite fencing.

WHY TREX COMPOSITE FENCING WON THE PROJECT

To complement her Trex Enhance® decking in Toasted Sand, Quintero selected Trex Seclusions® fencing in Woodland Brown. The rich, consistent color and wood-like appearance created a cohesive look across her entire yard – something her patchwork wood fence never could.

Beyond aesthetics, performance sealed the deal. Trex composite fencing won’t rot, warp or splinter, and it never needs painting, staining or sealing. For Quintero, that meant peace of mind. For professional contractors, it means fewer callbacks and a happier customer long after installation.

KEY BENEFITS QUINTERO IDENTIFIED MIRROR WHAT CONTRACTORS SEE ON THE JOB EVERY DAY:

• DURABILITY: Made from a blend of recycled wood and plastic, Trex fencing resists moisture, insects and harsh weather – including the hot Texas sun.

• LOW MAINTENANCE: No sanding, staining or seasonal treatments. Just an occasional cleaning with soap and water.

• LONGEVITY: With an expected lifespan of 25 years or more, composite fencing dramatically outperforms wood, which typically lasts 10-15 years, even with regular maintenance

“Although replacing a fence is hard work, I know that because we chose such a great product, we will likely never have to do this project again while we are in this home,” says Quintero.

INSTALLATION: WHAT CONTRACTORS SHOULD KNOW

From an installation standpoint, Quintero found composite fencing surprisingly straightforward. Using the step-by-step instructions available online, she navigated a project that required multiple post-mounting methods without any major challenges.

From a contractor’s perspective, composite fencing also streamlines the build process in ways that benefit both installer and homeowner. Trex composite fencing installs with standard tools and familiar techniques, while delivering greater consistency than traditional lumber, which can vary widely in quality and moisture content.

Because composite boards are engineered for uniformity, contractors can achieve cleaner lines, tighter joints and a more predictable finished appearance. This consistency not only improves efficiency during installation, but also reduces post-install adjustments caused by warping, shrinking or splitting – common issues with wood fences. The result is a smoother install, a more polished end product and fewer long-term service concerns.

THE FINISHED RESULT, AND THE BUSINESS TAKEAWAY

Once completed, Quintero’s new Trex fence delivered instant curb appeal, increased privacy and a polished, intentional look that matched her deck perfectly. Her backyard became more inviting, more functional and more valuable.

For fencing contractors, the takeaway is clear: composite fencing isn’t just a material upgrade; it’s a business opportunity. Today’s homeowners are actively seeking durable, low-maintenance solutions and are willing to invest in products that last. Composite fencing allows contractors to command higher perproject pricing, reduce long-term service issues and differentiate their offerings in a competitive market.

As more homeowners, including Quintero’s 182K social media fans, follow her lead, contractors who understand – and confidently recommend – composite fencing will be best positioned to win both the job and the referral.

CASE STUDY

Secondary Security Fence Enhances

Protection

at Memphis Air National Guard Base

The 164th Airlift Wing of the Tennessee Air National Guard, stationed at the Memphis Air National Guard Base, faced ongoing perimeter security challenges at its 119-acre facility located along the southeast edge of Memphis Shelby County Airport. Situated in a high-crime area, the base experienced multiple vehicle incursions into its perimeter fence each year, along with frequent vehicle break-ins.

Complicating the issue, the existing perimeter fence sat approximately 10 feet from a busy street. Jurisdictional restrictions from the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) prevented any improvements or relocation of the fence within that buffer zone. While TDOT adjusted traffic patterns near the base entrance, accidents and security incidents continued.

After evaluating multiple options, security planners determined that replacing or moving the existing perimeter fence was not feasible. Instead, the team identified a secondary interior fence system as the most effective solution to improve security without altering the outer perimeter. U. S. Fence & Gate was awarded the project. U. S. Fence & Gate specializes in security fence solutions for project of all sizes. With locations in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and Orange, Texas, the company has been in business for 30 years, handling specialty projects across the United States.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

The primary goal of the project was to enhance base security by installing a secondary fence system capable of deterring both personnel and vehicle intrusions. A key requirement was creating an entrapment zone between the existing perimeter fence and the new interior fence, providing additional response time in the event of a breach and allowing repairs to be made without compromising base security.

SCOPE OF WORK

The project included the installation of approximately 5,400 linear feet of anti-climb fencing, standing 13 feet, 2 inches high, fabricated from expanded metal mesh, and finished with electrostatically applied black powder coating. “We chose the AMICO Perimeter Security fencing with AMIGUARD 7100 series mesh at 10-foot, 6-inches tall, 32-inch tall AMIGUARD 4700 Palasade topper, installed onto their Chameleon2 framework,” says Josh Kalena, project manager with U.S. Fence & Gate. “The Chameleon framework allowed us to build this entire project on rolling hills without stair stepping the fence panels and requiring additional civil work to level up ground. The system was installed entirely inside the existing perimeter fence to avoid utility conflicts and comply with site restrictions.”

After inspecting the base, Kalena noticed many brown patterns within the buildings, brick and trim work, as well as the existing exterior fencing. “I proposed to the Lieutenant Colonel a brown fencing system that would blend naturally with their base in lieu of a black system that was requested at bid time. He agreed, and the choice delivered the desired results. The fence looks like it was part of the original base design.”

Kalena says the project scope also included:

• Seven 8-foot-wide vehicle gates

• Three 5-foot-wide pedestrian gates

• Two K4 crash-rated vehicle swing gates, featuring 34-foot and 40-foot openings

• Approximately 96 linear feet of additional fencing provided as excess material for future repairs

• Post footings were 30-inch diameter x 62-inch deep on 8-foot centers; a total of 762 yards for the entire project

All fence posts were installed using reinforced concrete footings designed to meet the Department of Defense Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) requirements. A continuous reinforced concrete mow strip was added beneath the fence and gates to support durability, drainage, and long-term maintenance.

RESULTS

The secondary fence significantly improved perimeter security by adding height, anti-climb and anti-cut protection, and a controlled buffer zone between fences. The design not only deters unauthorized access but also allows base personnel time to respond to incidents and repair damage without exposing the facility. Kalena says this project presented some unique challenges, including the security requirements for an armed forces facility as well as the space restrictions. “The Air National Guard also asked us to minimize disturbing the grass on base as much as possible – certainly a challenge with a project of this size and scope. We used Bule Gator Protection Mats under all equipment. And because no more than 36 yards of spoils could be left on site at any given time during the duration of the project. We fabricated a custom bucket for our skid steer to catch all of the spoils from our track hoe and auger systems as we excavated the trench and footings, depositing the spoils from the bucket directly into dump trucks to haul off so that no dirt would touch the ground, or be stock piled around the site for future clean up.”

The project broke ground May 1, 2025, and a ribbon cutting was held on November 7, 2025. “Thanks to the hard work of our team, we were able to complete the 490-day project in six months,” adds Kalena. “This project demonstrates how thoughtful fence design and strategic placement can solve complex security challenges—even when traditional perimeter upgrades are not an option.” Learn more at usfenceandgateinc.com.

James Hardie to Optimize Manufacturing Footprint

James Hardie Industries, a leading provider of exterior home and outdoor living solutions, announced it is taking steps to optimize its manufacturing footprint as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to operational excellence through the Hardie™ Operating System (“HOS”). As part of these actions, James Hardie’s manufacturing facilities in Fontana, California, and Summerville, South Carolina, will close within the next 60 days. The sites’ manufacturing operations, approximately 6% of the company’s year-to-date North American volume, will be absorbed by other facilities, and the Fontana site’s Innovation and Research & Development functions will remain in operation.

Aaron Erter, chief executive officer, says, “During the past several years, James Hardie has made significant investments in modernizing our manufacturing facilities to improve efficiency, support our material conversion opportunities, and to better serve our customers. Following a comprehensive review of our manufacturing network, we have decided to transfer more production volume to our modern, advanced plants. These actions will further improve our cost structure, increase productivity, and reinforce the Hardie Operating System, while ensuring we have the capacity needed to support our growth initiatives. Our focus remains on driving sustainable growth and value creation over the long term.”

Erter continues, “The decision to close these plants was not taken lightly, and I want to thank the teams at these sites for their years of dedication and hard work. We are grateful for their many contributions, which have been significant in shaping James Hardie.”

Safe School Gates Campaigners

Attend Westminster Roundtable

Gate Safe, the Kent-based charity dedicated to improving gate safety, kicked off 2026 with a Westminster Roundtable hosted by Sojan Joseph, MP for Ashford, Hawkinge and the Villages, as part of the Safe School Gates campaign.

The meeting held at Portcullis House, London, brought together key stakeholders to identify solutions to put a stop to serious gate accidents in schools. A survey conducted by Gate Safe indicates that there could be as many as over 24,000 schools with unsafe gates in England. When compared to the 232 schools affected by RAAC this highlights the severity of the issue since many of these gates are automated – and as such classed as machines – capable of inflicting serious injury or worse if they are not installed or maintained correctly.

The meeting, chaired by Gate Safe founder Richard Jackson OBE, was attended by delegates representing HSE (Health and Safety Executive); Secured by Design (official police security initiative); Zurich Insurance (trusted insurance partner to thousands of schools); SAFed (Safety Assessment Federation); and ECA (Electrical Contractors’ Association. In addition, senior personnel from companies responsible for manufacturing and installing automated and manual gates were present.

“This meeting was a resounding success, providing the opportunity for Gate Safe to bring the issue of gate safety in schools to the top of the agenda. We are confident that with the support of the delegates who attended the roundtable, we can move forward to ensure a better standard of safety for gates and barriers installed in the school environment – an environment which parents send their children to in the belief that they will be safeguarded and not exposed to unnecessary risks,” says Jackson.

KEY POINTS FOR DISCUSSION INCLUDED:

• A move towards ensuring all new installations comply with the law which states that all gates / machines should be safe – and to bring historic installations up to the required safety standards

• The supply of all manual and automated swing gates with three hinges as is required by the British Standards to avoid the growing number of falling gate accidents. A third hinge or tether should be retrofitted to any existing installations which are not compliant

• Recognition of the legal requirement to have all automated gates maintained a minimum of every six months by a suitably trained and competent professional

• Improved policing of school gates which could extend to the need for building regulations to be applied to automated gates and Ofsted inspections to incorporate more detailed requirements for automated (and manual) gates

• Better understanding amongst schools, insurance and inspection industry of the requirements for a safe and legally compliant gate To learn more, visit gate-safe.org

The Hidden Cost of “That’s How We’ve Always Done It”

Every business, large and small, including those in the fence industry has heard it, and most have said it at some point: “That’s how we’ve always done it.” On the surface, the phrase sounds harmless, even comforting. It implies experience, tradition and proven methods. But in a world that moves at digital speed, that mindset can quietly become one of the most expensive habits a business carries.

The real cost isn’t just inefficiency. It’s missed opportunity.

Many fence companies were built on hard-earned knowledge passed down through years of field experience. That foundation matters. But when long-standing habits go unquestioned, they can prevent companies from adapting to new expectations from customers, general contractors, and employees alike.

Take estimating, for example. Relying on handwritten notes, outdated spreadsheets or mental math might have worked for years, but as projects grow more complex, the margin for error shrinks. One missed detail or unclear scope can erase profit on an entire job. Technology and standardized processes aren’t about replacing experience; they’re about protecting it.

The same applies on the jobsite. “We’ve always done it this way” often shows up in how crews communicate, document work or handle changes. Without consistent systems for reporting progress, tracking materials or confirming changes, small issues turn into rework, delays and/or disputes. Those costs aren’t always evident immediately, but they add up fast.

There’s also a people cost. Younger workers entering the industry expect structure, training and tools that help them succeed. When processes live only in one foreman’s head or depend on “figuring it out as you go,” it creates frustration and limits growth. Good employees don’t leave because the work is hard – they leave because the work is unnecessarily hard.

Customers notice too. Today’s clients expect clear timelines, accurate proposals and professional communication. When competitors invest in better systems and smoother experiences, “the way we’ve always done it” starts to look outdated, not dependable.

This doesn’t mean abandoning what works. It means asking better questions. Why do we do it this way? Does it still serve the business? Is there a safer, faster, or more profitable approach?

Progress in a company of any size doesn’t require radical change overnight. Often, it starts with small shifts: documenting a process, training a foreman differently or adopting one new tool that reduces errors. Those changes compound over time.

Tradition built many great fence companies. But growth comes from knowing when to respect the past, and when to improve on it. In a competitive market, the biggest risk isn’t change. It’s standing still.

Trex Honors Contractors With Stellar Service Awards

Trex Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing, and a leader in high-performance outdoor living products, recently honored its top-performing TrexPro® contractors from the past year with the company’s esteemed Stellar Service Award. The highest honor bestowed by Trex to professional deck builders, the award recognizes outstanding contractor performance, customer service and brand partnership.

“This year’s Stellar Service winners truly represent the best of the best,” says Todd Phariss, TrexPro program manager. “By listening closely to homeowners and putting their needs first, these TrexPro contractors deliver an exceptional customer experience built on trust, quality and craftsmanship. Their commitment continues to set the standard for what today’s consumers expect from the professionals they choose.”

Presented annually, the Trex Stellar Service Awards celebrate top-performing TrexPro builders across the company’s eight sales regions, including international. To qualify, contractors must complete enough projects during a 12-month period to rank within the top 25% of all TrexPro builders in their region by project volume and earn the most – and highest – satisfaction ratings in post-build customer surveys.

Each honoree received a commemorative plaque from Trex along with an award icon added to their profile page on Trex.com. This icon boosts their ranking in the company’s online Find a Builder locator and indicates excellence for homeowners searching for a quality deck builder in their region.

“Stellar Service recognition is driven by customer feedback and reflects the qualities that define our elite Platinum builders – exceptional customer care, superior craftmanship and a continued commitment to using the highest-quality materials,” adds Phariss.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the TrexPro program is the oldest and largest contractor loyalty program in the decking industry. Initially created as an installation and sales training program, the TrexPro initiative has evolved into a platform that helps builders take their businesses to the next level by elevating their profiles, providing them with expert support and, most importantly, connecting them with more customers. To achieve TrexPro status, contractors must demonstrate building expertise adhering to Trex’s industryleading installation requirements and program guidelines. Based on performance and project volume, contractors are ranked in three tiers – TrexPro, TrexPro Gold and TrexPro Platinum.

Tony Thornton

FOUNDER, THORNTON FENCE CONSULTING GROUP with

For five decades, Tony Thornton has been part of the backbone of the fence industry, building relationships, growing businesses and helping shape the trade through steady leadership and hardearned experience. As he celebrates 50 years in fencing, Thornton’s career stands as a testament to perseverance, adaptability and a deep respect for the craft and the people who power it. Fence News was able to visit with him about this remarkable career milestone and where the journey took him along the way.

Looking back over 50 years in the fence industry, what has kept you here?

From the moment I started at age 15, it has been the people who have kept me in the industry. I have learned through my career that the people you meet, the hands you shake and the people you get to know are the reason this is a special industry.

You’ve held multiple roles within the industry – worked it from inside and out! Can you give a brief chronology of your career, and how that path led you to forming Thornton Fence Consulting Group?

Wow – time flies! My career in fencing started at 15, when a neighbor and family friend stopped by while I was cutting our lawn and I was told to, “get in the truck, done talked to your dad, we’re going to build a fence. ” That family friend and neighbor was Mr. Jere Jefcoat, and every summer between junior high, high school and even college, I worked for Jefcoat Fence Company in Pearl, Mississippi.

In 1981, I decided the college life wasn’t for me after 18 months at a local junior college, I decided to go to work full time at Jefcoat Fence Company. I learned all aspects of the fence industry, both residential and commercial, including chain link, wood, ornamental, vinyl and agricultural fence. Through this work, I became passionate about finding areas of improvement. I worked with Jefcoat Fence Company for 14 years and was the operations manager for nine years before branching out on my own.

At age 29, I started my own business in the gate automation installation area of our

industry called ETS, INC. This company grew exponentially, and we expanded into one of the largest gate operator and access control distributors in the country, eventually selling to Controlled Products System Group.

After selling the distribution company in the early 2000’s, I worked for DKS (Doorking) as a regional sales manager for over nine years and was responsible for multiple states. I was also heavily involved with the in-house and regional training events throughout the country. My passion for education and supporting the fence and gate industry continued to grow, and my background as a contractor and distributor provided a wealth of knowledge to the gate automation industry.

I was involved with the American Fence Association (AFA), serving as a volunteer during this time and was asked to through my name in the hat to become the executive director of AFA. In January, 2014, I began serving as the executive director for the American Fence Association and served until semi-retirement in 2022. Serving as executive director for these eight years offered me an opportunity to speak, mentor, support and coach many companies that needed help to take the next step towards being efficient and profitable. My passion has always been to teach, educate and provide training to industry professionals to enhance their opportunities for growing their company, and in 2022, I started Thornton Fence Consulting Group to focus on organizational structure and business health.

The industry has changed dramatically over five decades (understatement!). What are some of the biggest shifts you’ve seen in materials, technology, or business practices? One of the biggest shifts I’ve seen is our willingness to share our successes with others. The technology and improvement of tools have been tremendous, and I would say the technology and techniques for installation, and even running our businesses, have been gamechanges for our industry.

What lessons learned early in your career still guide how you approach work and leadership today?

Treat people as you wish to be treated, with respect and grace. Learn and ask questions from people who are willing to share, and do everything you can to lift up and help others.

Is there a particular project or moment that stands out as especially meaningful in your career?

The most meaningful moment for me has been watching someone or a company embrace change and find improvements. Seeing the success of others, maybe through something you did or help you provided, this is a huge WIN. My goal is to always be a servant leader to others, helping them achieve their goals.

How has the definition of “success” changed for you over the course of your career?

I believe in early careers, it is the almighty dollar, but as we mature and grow as individuals, it becomes satisfaction in seeing others define and have their success that becomes more rewarding. Success at this stage of my career is lifting others up and working every day to make a positive impact on someone in a meaningful way. It is my faith, family, friends and fitness that motivate me!

The fence industry is often described as both demanding and rewarding. What has been the most challenging aspect of the work, and what has been the most fulfilling?

Interesting questions. I think the most demanding and rewarding is one in the same. Working to improve the level of professionalism, education and building meaningful relationships across an industry is very challenging, but also very rewarding. My time as AFA Executive Director was a blessing that provided me with so much joy, but also, was one of the most challenging times, due to wanting to make AFA more relevant and meaningful to the members and the industry. Now, owning and operating Thornton Fence Consulting Group is the most fulfilling and rewarding work that I have ever done. Start-Up Stories

Those on the outside may think owning and growing a business is glamorous. They see the current building, the staff, the equipment and the profits. What they don’t see are the startups. The small beginnings, the ever-present worry, the dreams and the everyday decisions that can either make it or break it.

Fence News honors those who put their hat in the self-employment ring and built their business one small step at a time.

BOB RAY NORTH INDY

FENCE

Success In New Opportunities

After selling his first business, Bob Ray was interested in moving to skilled trades and found the perfect opportunity when the owners of North Indy Fence, Deck & Rail decided to retire. In December 2021, Ray purchased the building and land and a business that came with a solid track record and outstanding reputation.

“I was extremely interested in the opportunity to own a commercial asset,” he says. “The previous owners left behind a strong foundation and an impeccable history that I’m honored to carry on.”

North Indy Fence serves Indianapolis and the surrounding suburban areas as a full-service fence company specializing in fencing, decking, and railing solutions. From ornamental fencing to access control systems, the company is positioned to meet a variety of needs and preferences.

“What makes North Indy Fence unique is our exclusive offering of high-end aluminum and vinyl products from Digger Specialties,” Ray says. “We have been their largest customer in Indiana for several years and are honored to have built a trustworthy relationship.”

In his five years of ownership, Ray has exponentially grown the business both in personnel and products. When Ray first purchased the company, it came with seven employees and was only set up to offer maintenance free fencing, railing and gates.

“When I took over the business North Indy Fence did not offer wood fencing and all posts were still being set in concrete. Today, we offer all types of wood fencing and primarily utilize no-dig installation. We also have three crews now, one primarily works on railing and driveway gates, and the other two cover our fencing projects.”

Like many businesses, North Indy Fence needed technological updates to keep up with the demand of an ever-growing society. Needing more than just sticky

notes and white boards, Ray introduced CRM platforms to manage quotes, current jobs and billing, as well as interactive ways for customers, developers, landscapers and contractors to see what others have to say about North Indy Fence.

“It’s not just our word, but real customers offering their honest opinions about the work we completed,” says Ray. “We appreciate our customers recommending us to their family and friends, and it’s a privilege to have working relationships with so many other companies in our area that welcome us to their projects for fencing, railing and gate solutions.”

When asked what he’s learned through advancing North Indy Fence, Ray says profitability, employee satisfaction, and managing your own expectations are at the top of the list.

“It’s important to be competitive while also making a profit. It’s a necessary balancing act. Equally as important is focusing on the customers you want to acquire. You may not win every quote, and that’s ok. The right customer will appreciate what you have to offer and offering a high level of service to that customer is better than jumping at every quote that comes in. While you’re working to grow the external portion of your business, don’t forget about your internal commitments as well. Compensating your staff and offering motivation go a long way. A motivated team allows your crews to perform as efficiently as possible.”

Looking to the future, Ray says North Indy Fence is gearing up to expand its team again with new staff including a dedicated sales team. “2025 was our best year yet. We’re fortunate to have so many requests come through our doors and we don’t want to lose out any opportunities. Our team has a desire to continue growing our business and gaining new partnerships.”

NADRA 2025 National+ Deck Awards

The North American Deck and Railing Association celebrated its 2025 National+ Deck Competition winners in Clearwater Beach, Florida, at the 16th Annual Awards Celebration highlighting record participation, rising design standards, and award-winning innovation.

The overall prize went to Dr. Decks’ ‘KiKi’ project featuring a home built on 14” round wood piles driven to depth with a deck also built on the piles. The original builder of the house framed the floor right through the side of the home on to exterior beams and piles. The project is an innovation spectacle with curved aluminum framing, stainless steel railings, and curved built-in benches.

“This work of art used all 35 years of my deck building experience,” says Jason Russell, owner of Dr. Decks. “We had to create new ways to apply our

standard methods to a new wave of exterior products to create something amazing that I’ve never seen before-a compound curved, tilt back bench.”

Other awards included the Recognition Award presented to Greg Groenhout, and the prestigious Terry Award presented to Heath Bowman. Groenhout served the industry for 36 years at National Nail. Did You Hear What I Heard?

One of the great things about FenceTech is its ability to attract a pretty large, and very representative, cross section of the fencing industry who get together in one place for a couple of days. What I’ve learned in my many years attending this meeting is that you can learn a whole lot more about what’s happening in the fence industry if you spend some time listening, rather than talking.

For those of you who know me, that’s quite a statement. Yes, I talk a lot. As a matter of fact, I talk for a living. But I also know that there are a LOT of people at FenceTech who know what is happening in the industry, and they have some great insight into what is going to be happening in the industry in the next couple of years. So, I spent time listening to these smart people in Indianapolis, and here is what I heard.

Security, infrastructure and energy are still creating growth for fencing. The fencing industry should continue to see moderate but steady growth again for the next two years. Projects needing high-level perimeter security will keep getting funding from both private and public sources. These bigger projects in infrastructure and energy have funded years out, so the projects will get done.

Due to its funding structure, the commercial sector is more interest-sensitive, so there will be a little more caution here. Commercial is also more susceptible to other factors, such as changes in the workplace like remote workforces and the growth of AI. There should still be growth in higher security levels of all types – especially in perimeter security - for data centers and other highly sensitive facilities.

Since annual construction spending is expected to be close to two trillion dollars for the next two

years, virtually all of those projects (including residential and multifamily) will be securityconscious, so the opportunities for growth (and profitability) in the fencing industry is right there.

Most frequent question I heard: “Is the fencing industry capable of handling all those opportunities?” The people who attend FenceTech also know there is a frightening shortage of skilled workers in the fence industry, and that means at every level. Skilled installers will be in great demand by contactors; skilled (and qualified) drivers are indispensable to suppliers and wholesalers; and skilled warehouse workers and machine operators are already in short availability - and great demand - by manufacturers. There were a lot of questions but not many answers, except “business as usual,” and everyone admitted this approach isn’t going to solve the problems in this area.

There was quite a bit of talk about manufacturing growth being another bright light for fencing. The Trump administration’s desire to re-capture U.S. manufacturing leadership has provided some big incentives for companies to reinvest in building new plants across the country. Enhanced focus on stabilizing supply chain reliability has also created some optimism in starting new construction of semiconductor plants, battery manufacturing facilities and advanced production sites. Granted, some of these projects will not reach fruition for several years, but the vast majority of these industrial jobs will require perimeter security systems with high reliability and enhanced deterrent capabilities.

I heard the word “partner” being tossed around. I also saw quite of few examples of this on the show floor throughout the convention center. People seemed more open to co-

branding and working through third party resources. One good example of that was the discussion I sat in at one of the ASTM meetings held in conjunction with FenceTech. I knew most of the people in the room, and they came from a pretty wide spread of the fence industry. The topic was whether or not the committee was going to seek ASTM approval of a draft specification. Time after time, the talk centered around which organization or institution was best to “partner” with to get things to the next step. It reflected the interdependency the industry has at its core

Listening to the attendees, the speakers and the exhibitors at FenceTech was a great way to learn about the incredible wealth of talent and information the fence industry has at its disposal as we look ahead into 2026 and beyond. We really do have to work together to make the best use of those resources.

Did you hear what I heard?

Bidding & Estimating in the Fence Industry

Ever wonder why fencing industry sales staff sometimes struggle with closing sales, plagued by a plethora of residential customers who never seem to be satisfied and are always looking for a lower price? Why commercial fence bids, that should be ultra-competitive, sometimes have a 20, 30 and even 40% spread on the same job?

First question we should ask: What are some components of a fair bid? First, ask this question, “Are your customers comparing apples to apples; are you on a level playing field with our competitors?” Do they have the same costs of doing business as you do?

You need to know your competition. What is their respective overhead and how does your company stack up? The greater your overhead number, the harder it is to compete.

What are your true overhead costs and how do you calculate them? There are actually three components to your bid:

1. Direct costs (materials, labor, etc.)

2. Indirect or fixed costs, (office and management, etc.)

3. Semi- variable costs or a combination between direct and indirect costs.

Overhead is anything that cost you money not directly tied to direct job costs.

The best way to accurately ascertain your real costs and establish a true value overhead factor for your company is through the creation of a Master Budget. For help explaining what a Master Budget is, you can reach out to me and I will gladly explain the process, and the huge benefit of having one for managing your finances.

Also, never underestimate the importance of maintaining every bid margin opportunity. The idea is to reach what I call the “Cream at the Top.” Let me give you an example:

Imagine a fence job where your net (direct plus indirect) job cost is $800, including overhead, and your bid goal is $1,000. You would like to make a net profit of $200. Further imagine that to get the sale, your sales staff discounts the job by only 10%, or $100. That small discount cuts your profit in HALF!

On the other hand, if you had a motivated, commission-based sales staff who was able to up-sell or “value sell” your bid by ONLY 20%, from $1,000 to $1,200, that same fence job DOUBLED your profits. Why? Because you are a superior company with superior products and installers, and you and your team deserve it.

Keep in mind any company would need to sell four times the volume of jobs, with four times the work, and four times the workforce, required to make the same money using the discounted price, as opposed to one crew and one quarter the amount of work using the model of the Value sales person number two.

Moral of the story? It is so very important to KNOW your TRUE costs and bid accordingly. Profit is NOT a dirty word.

Another important point in bidding is the role of timing in your sales presentation. A customer (especially a residential one) is like a boiling pot of water……

After you make your Value sales pitch, the water comes to a boil,… The longer you wait to close (days and sometimes weeks for some sales staff) the cooler the customer becomes and the less likely you are to CLOSE the Value sale.

Good luck and remember you are the key to your company’s success, be positive and confident and you will succeed.

FENCETECH 2026: AFA’s New Mission in Action

Since 1962, the American Fence Association has been the tie that binds. We are the unifying force that brings together contractors, manufacturers, distributors and business service providers all under one roof.

Long before outdoor living, gate automation and perimeter security systems were common business scaling strategies, our industry understood something fundamental: we are stronger together than we are apart.

The American Fence Association unites the industry to build community, develop leaders, and inspire growth.

That spirit was on full display in Indianapolis. Nearly 6,000 professionals gathered for FENCETECH 2026. More than 1,200 came together to have some fun in the cold Indiana night before the show floor opened. Education sessions were full. Conversations were focused. The exhibit hall was active from start to finish. But what mattered most wasn’t the size of the crowd. It was AFA’s commitment to have the right people in the room. For decades, AFA has been the place where fence and gate professionals from large and small companies gather to learn and celebrate our industry. In Indianapolis, AFA’s new mission came to life in the partnerships formed, the knowledge shared, and the next generation stepping forward.

Community Is a Competitive Advantage

On the show floor, manufacturers weren’t simply showcasing products. They were helping solve real-world challenges. Contractors weren’t just comparing product features and benefits. They were sharing experiences and creating solutions. The industry’s top leaders were building bridges between traditional fencing solutions and the evolving technologies that will transform our businesses and our industry.

That is not networking for the sake of just making friends. That is problem-solving at scale. High tides raise all boats, and an industry that shares good ideas grows faster than one that guards them. Community is not a “nice to have” option. Community and industry connections are a vital part of every successful company’s DNA.

Leadership Is the Multiplier

The education sessions told a deeper story about the importance of leadership.

Packed rooms. Focused discussion. Questions that moved beyond installation techniques into leadership, culture, operational systems and customer experience. An industry does not grow because attendance at a show grows. It grows when its people grow.

When a company invests in supervision skills for a new crew leader.

When a business owner refines her systems and strategies.

When a young professional sees a long-term career path and stays with his company.

Leadership and professional development are not optional if we want a thriving industry workforce.

Growth Must Be Intentional

Yes, FENCETECH continues to expand. Yes, the energy was high. Yes, the technology on display reflected an evolving industry. But growth is more than attendance numbers and square footage.

Growth is professionalism and industry pride.

Growth is raising safety standards. Growth is investing in systems.

Growth is strengthening customer trust.

The question is not whether we are growing. The question is whether we are growing intentionally. The answer is yes, by focusing on our values and shared purpose.

Our Values Are Visible

Large events reveal culture. In Indianapolis, AFA’s five values were demonstrated by action.

Teamwork was evident in the collaboration between participants.

Passion showed up in the pride people take in their craft and companies.

Integrity surfaced in conversations about standards and certification and employee care. Respect was visible in the way seasoned leaders welcomed first-time attendees.

Growth was measurable in participation, engagement, and the expanding scope of programs.

Values are not defined by what we say. They are defined by our actions.

And our values provide the foundation for building an industry.

The Industry We Are Building

The demand for secure families, defined boundaries, and integrated security solutions is greater now than ever before, but as John Feerick from Premier Fence in Canton, MA, is fond of saying, the industry will change more in the next 10 years than it has in the past 100. And in that change, AFA will be here, helping shape our shared future.

FENCETECH 2026 was a resounding success. It was evidence of an industry organized around a shared purpose. When our industry unites around community, leadership, and growth, we build more than solutions.

We build credibility.

We build capacity.

We build trust.

And when we grow as leaders, our companies grow. When our companies grow, our people grow. When our people grow, the industry grows. THAT is the AFA mission in action.

Michael Reed has been involved with the American Fence Association for nine years, the last three serving as the executive director. Michael loves AFA's history and culture and believes in the power of associations to solve problems big and small. He's focused on building an AFA that develops leaders, increases professionalism, and plays a leadership role in our industry's growth and success. His passion is leadership, and he's currently finishing his doctoral dissertation on trust and leadership development.

Unlimited Sports Solutions’ TIGER Netting System

Named

ASBA Game Changer Award Winner

The TIGER Backstop Netting System from Unlimited Sports Solutions (USS) has been named a Game Changer Award winner by the American Sports Builders Association (ASBA) during the recent ASBA Technical Meeting in San Antonio.

The ASBA Game Changer Award recognizes vendors whose products represent gamechanging innovations in the sports construction industry. The TIGER Netting System was honored for addressing one of the most persistent challenges in traditional netting systems: durability.

Developed by Unlimited Sports Solutions, the TIGER Backstop Netting System is a breakthrough in sports barrier technology. Unlike traditional netting, this system is vandalism-resistant and engineered to withstand both intentional and accidental damage, significantly reducing maintenance and replacement costs. At the same time, it preserves the core benefits of netting systems—clear spectator sightlines and enhanced safety by keeping balls contained within the field of play.

The American Sports Builders Association (ASBA) exists to promote the highest standards of design, construction, and maintenance for all types of indoor and outdoor sports facilities. ASBA serves as a centralized resource for builders, designers, suppliers, owners, operators, and the athletes and spectators who enjoy these facilities.

“We are truly honored to be recognized by the leading organization in the sports construction industry,” says Ron Dubas, president of USS. “Being named an ASBA Game Changer reinforces our mission to drive meaningful innovation, and the TIGER Netting System reflects our dedication to advancing sports safety and product performance.”

engcon and Komatsu Announce Enhanced Integration Through Seamless Tiltrotator Technology

engcon, the world's leading manufacturer of tiltrotators, is strengthening its collaboration with Komatsu to deliver greater efficiency and convenience for excavator operators. This partnership focuses on simplifying installation and reducing overall costs for end users of the Komatsu Dash 12 series.

“This collaboration marks a significant step toward smarter, more efficient excavation solutions, combining Komatsu’s advanced machine control with engcon’s tiltrotator technology,” says Sam Ryan, global OEM manager, engcon.

In this solution, engcon DC3 tiltrotators will integrate with Komatsu’s advanced systems, delivering superior precision and responsive control. This powerful combination unlocks the full potential of Komatsu’s intelligent Machine Control 3.0, offering semiautomatic control of the rotation and tilting of the bucket. It also includes features such as posture hold control, which automatically maintains attachment orientation. Connectivity is enhanced through engcon’s mobile app, remote support, and smart tool programs, ensuring operators stay in control at all times.

“Komatsu is committed to enabling the seamless integration of attachments that offer significant customer value. Through our partnership with engcon, we are advancing our commitment to providing integrated solutions that help customers work more productively and flexibly,” says Rob Macintyre, product manager at Komatsu Europe.
