Fence Games™ 2026 Set for April 17–18 in South Bend Mr. Fence Academy is excited to announce it's annual Fence GamesTM will return on April 17-18, across seven acres of Custom Machine Monitoring's facility in South Bend, Indiana. For the first time in Fence Games™ history, four major fence associations will be represented at a single event, including the Canadian Fence Association (CFA), the Fence Workers Association (FWA), the American Fence Association (AFA), and the North American Fence Contractors Association (NAFCA). “This year’s event is by far the most ambitious and engaging gathering the fence industry has ever seen,” says Shawn King, president of Mr. Fence. “Fence Games™ represents the evolution of our industry gatherings — born from the hands-on energy of FenceCamp™, refined through years of training events, and now realized as a competition that tests every aspect of fence building.” The Fence Games™ is a live competition where

teams construct a fence in real time—start to finish—using their own materials and methods. There are no staged builds or prefabricated sections. Every cut, post set, and fastener happens live in front of the crowd. “Competitors build full-length sections of fence side-by-side under equal conditions to test their skill, systems, and tools,” King explains. “The competition evaluates the complete system of installation — not just speed — focusing on balance and real-world performance. Judges assess each team on quality, efficiency, equipment cost, material value, strength, teachability, adaptability, and other criteria.” Competitors will be judged by a panel of 28 judges across 14 scoring categories, making this one of the most comprehensive and well-rounded fence competitions ever produced. Beyond the competition floor, Fence Games™

2026 will feature four hands-on installation clinics held over the two days and are available exclusively to VIP ticket holders. “There is truly something for everyone on a fence crew to learn,” King says. “We will have over 50 outdoor vendors offering live, working demonstrations of their tools, materials, and equipment exactly as they’re used in the field.” The weekend will kick off Friday, April 17, with guests invited to dinner and a watch party featuring the South Bend Cubs in a home game series against the Beloit Sky Carp. A limited number of discounted hotel rooms are available as well as on-site camper and RV spots. VIP tickets and sponsorship packages are available now. To learn more, find Mr. Fence Academy on Eventbrite.com.

I am humbled to be recognized for this award which provides gratifying recognition of the trailblazing work that we as a team have undertaken. 76FENCE Launches Landmark 38-territory Expansion in DallasFort Worth 76FENCE is making a major investment in Texas with the launch of 38 new territories across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The development, led by entrepreneur, asset coach and tax strategist Bob Wolf, is the largest multi-territory deal in the brand’s history and positions Texas as the anchor market of the 76FENCE system nationwide. Wolf is a seasoned business strategist and founder of multiple businesses and built his career helping clients achieve long-term success through disciplined, asset and tax planning. He is now applying that same strategy to the fencing industry, with an approach designed for scalability, community service and job creation. “Our goal in Dallas-Fort Worth is not just to launch territories, but to build a system that sets the standard for exceptional service,” says Bob Wolf, 76FENCE Central Texas regional developer and multi-territory franchise owner. “We’ve structured this expansion to focus on people first — our customers, our crews, and our communities. With dedicated training, support, and a values-driven approach, we’re committed to building lasting relationships and delivering service that goes far beyond a transaction.” Wolf’s DFW expansion will open in phases, using a model of rolling out four to five territories at a time, with new territories scheduled to launch every 180 days. Each grouping of four to five territories will be supported by a leadership team overseeing sales, project management, crew partnerships and customer experience. The expansion is expected to create more than 150 jobs in Texas over the next three years, ranging from management and sales to operational support and partnerships with crews. The first five territories, based in McKinney, will serve McKinney, Carrollton, Plano, Frisco and Allen. “This deal marks a milestone moment for 76 Fence,” says Ed Samane, CEO of 76 Fence. “Bob and his team bring not only investment capital, but also a strong commitment to training, values, and delivering consistent quality at scale. Their 38-territory expansion positions Texas as our anchor market and reflects the way large-scale franchise growth can be achieved while keeping service, integrity, and people at the center.” 76 Fence offers customized fencing solutions for residential, commercial and HOA properties, providing a wide array of products including wood, vinyl, aluminum, composite, ornamental metal, steel, chain link and privacy fencing. Services also include security and pool enclosures, along with commercial-grade installations for schools, businesses and municipalities. Franchisees are trained to deliver solutions with premium materials, competitive pricing, open communication and professional project management, supported by national vendor partnerships and ongoing operational training. “At the end of the day, we don’t just want to be known for fences,” says Wolf. “We want to be known for building trust, creating opportunities, and supporting the communities we serve. Women

in Fencing

Women are shaping the future of the fence industry in powerful and inspiring ways. From fabrication shops to installation crews, from engineering to executive leadership, women are bringing skill, innovation and fresh perspectives. This special section celebrates their contributions across the industry by spotlighting female leaders in the profession who are building a stronger future.

NOËLLE HAND Trex Company

“ Focus on Achieving Your Goals and the Right People will Notice” Fresh out of college, Noëlle Hand started her career in the death-care space selling cremation urns to consumers and funeral homes. While rewarding, the emotional toll was heavy, so she moved into publishing in San Francisco. The long, grueling commute led her to a position with Trex eight years ago. “My path here has really been guided by following good products and meaningful work, even when that meant jumping into new industries.” Trex is the world’s #1 brand of sustainably made, wood-alternative decking, and residential deck railing, as well as a leader in high performance, low-maintenance outdoor living products. In her role, Hand leads localized dealer marketing across Trex’s Southwest and Western Canada regions, building and executing campaigns, developing annual marketing plans and managing targeted communications. She co-manages their national merchandising program and oversees the Trex national brand store, and has recently become more heavily involved in supporting local events and hands-

on product training to strengthen regional partnerships. Hand’s strengths make her well-suited for this role, particularly training in public speaking; the ability to adapt, learn quickly and translate insights into action; and relationship-building skills. “I’m lucky to work with one of the strongest teams at Trex, and I also get to collaborate closely with local sales teams, distributors, dealers, contractors, and architects,” says Hand. “Sometimes it’s like family – in the best ways – even when we disagree.” One of the biggest challenges she faces is balancing the fast pace of the industry with the long-term nature of brand building. Dealer needs, market shifts and competitive pressure can change quickly, but marketing impact compounds over time. "Part of my role is helping teams zoom out, align around the bigger picture, and keep momentum without losing sight of the long game," she explains. She has never felt a door was closed to her because of her gender, but as a traveling

mother, Hand often finds herself having to explain – or even defend – her childcare logistics in ways male counterparts typically don’t. “It’s a subtle, but very real difference.” It may not seem monumental at first glance, but since joining Trex, Hand has watched many women hired as “firsts” in field-based roles. “Historically, the talent pool just didn’t include many women, so seeing that shift in real time is exciting. It gives me hope that my daughters won’t have to work quite so hard just to be seen as equals.” Her best advice for other women? “Don’t focus on what others around you are doing. Focus on your own work and what you want to achieve. The right people will always notice. And having a ‘thick skin' doesn’t have to be the price of admission. Speak up when something doesn’t feel right, advocate for yourself, and don’t apologize for expecting equitable treatment – even if the situation involves a customer. Confidence isn’t a liability; it’s part of your success toolkit.” Learn more at trex.com.

MELANIE RAMIREZ Standard Paints

STEPHANIE ANDERSON Trident Fence

" Hard Work Goes Beyond Stereotypes"

" Thriving Women Transforming the Workplace"

Melanie Ramirez, environmental, safety & compliance director with Standard Paints, says focusing on comparing her present situation to her ultimate goals has proven a successful strategy no matter what preset gender structures she may have encountered. “Early in life I was taught that I had to work for what I wanted. No matter if it’s a man or a woman, there is always going to be someone better, more skilled, more knowledgeable, or someone who has more experience than I do. But I am confident in the skills and knowledge that I bring to the table.” A 14-year veteran in the paint/coatings industry, Ramirez has previous experience in lab chemistry and has been involved in safety and compliance for over five years. She has a bachelor's degree in biology and a master’s degree in business administration. In her current role at Standard Paints, safety for all employees is her top priority. “I make sure the work we do is performed safely by all employees and that we maintain a safe work environment. I am also responsible for ensuring the company is compliant with all federal, state and local regulations.” Early in her career, she was put in charge of creating and upkeeping standard operating procedures, work instructions, and test methods. Ramirez says this experience developed an appreciation for the importance of having a set of instructions and guidelines to help everyone maintain consistency and create structure in the workplace. “I really like that I get to help keep people safe and that the work environment feels comfortable, regardless of the workload. I feel good about the work I do and enjoy coming in to work every day.” At a previous employer, Ramirez had an opportunity to join the safety committee which served as her first introduction to the field of Environmental, Health & Safety. “Thanks to extraordinary mentors, my investment in my education, and the professional relationships I nurtured along the way, I was able to have a seamless transition into this new area and find success.” Ramirez says the most challenging part of her job is helping all employees to understand the importance of safety and how to incorporate it into their daily work routine. “Everyone thinks, feels, acts, and works differently. Thus, delivering an idea or a notion to everyone, no matter how simple it may be, even if it benefits all, and for you to get everyone to take it in and accept it, is challenging.” When asked what advice she would give to other women entering the industry she says, “Put God first in your life and let Him lead you, and work hard to gain the skills and knowledge you need to reach your goals. This is what I’ve done throughout my career, and it has helped me get this far.” Learn more at wooddefender.com.

Stephanie Anderson’s career at Trident began over six years ago. In October 2019, Anderson joined the company as a sales representative, assuming the responsibility of overseeing order fulfillment from packaging to shipping. Today as a customer support manager, Anderson works tirelessly to efficiently resolve customer needs, manage all support channels, and finalize freight quotes and order fulfillments with the logistics team. Anderson particularly finds joy in the behind the scenes by organizing company events and fostering a positive work environment. When asked what she enjoys most about her job, she says, "I enjoy solving problems and creating solutions that leave both the customer and the company satisfied. I also love organizing team celebrations that make employees feel valued and connected. When people feel appreciated at work, it shows in how they treat our customers.” With 16 years of experience in call center operations, Anderson joined Trident with a depth of experience that allowed her to contribute quickly and confidently. Her background taught her how to communicate effectively, remain steady in demanding situations, and adapt when customer needs or priorities shift. These abilities have helped her grow as a leader and continue to stand out in an industry where women are making significant strides. She brings empathy to every interaction, taking time to understand both customer concerns and her team’s needs. With strong organizational skills and a thoughtful approach to decision-making, she manages multiple responsibilities while supporting both immediate customer satisfaction and the company’s long-term goals. Anderson believes it is important to note that, despite the negative connotation around women in the industry, she does not feel that being a woman has limited her ability to excel in the slightest. She highlights the great benefits of working in this industry and the tangible opportunities for advancement. In fact, her advice to young women looking to join a male-dominated field is for them to grow their skills, display them with confidence, and don’t be afraid to speak up. “At Trident, we treat each other with respect and work together as a team,” says Anderson, “and gender has never been a barrier to my role or my growth here.” Anderson emphasizes that in the last six years, Trident has grown significantly. In 2019, Trident’s employees totaled 18 across all brands, now they have almost tripled in size. They’ve expanded to a second warehouse location and continuously create opportunities for employees. “It’s exciting to be a part of a company that’s growing and evolving so quickly.” Learn more at tridentfence.com. MELANIE GOODWIN Campanella Fence

“ Leading By Example: Creating Space for Women in Fencing”

One thing that never changes is that life is ever changing. That concept is not new to Campanella Fence’s AFA certified operations manager, Melanie Goodwin. From childhood to present day, Goodwin has learned the art of adaptability, attention to detail, and confidence. Her strengths in these areas, and more, have come together to make the perfect storm that is her ongoing success. Melanie joined Campanella Fence, an established, family-owned business with over 35 years of residential and commercial experience, eight years ago to fulfill an administrative support role. She rapidly became a key part in operations, project coordination, scheduling, and customer and vendor relations. Now, almost a decade later, Goodwin has become a leader in those spaces. She says this was an uphill climb, but not an impossible one. Being a woman in this male-dominated industry impacted Goodwin’s career, especially in the beginning, but she believes it has only made her stronger. “I had to prove myself through consistency,

knowledge and results,” says Goodwin. “Over time, respect followed. Now, I view being a woman in this industry as a strength and an opportunity to help open doors for future generations,” she continues. “In addition to my daily work at Campanella Fence, I am committed to increasing female representation and leadership in our industry through my involvement with the American Fence Association and Women in Fencing initiatives. I am passionate about mentorship, education, and building a stronger, more inclusive future for our trade.” This perspective has allowed her growth to expand beyond Campanella Fence and into being a part of bigger change in the fencing industry. Goodwin became the Director of Education for the New York/Long Island Chapter of the American Fence Association as well as the President-elect for 2026. When asked what she enjoyed most, Goodwin’s response displayed her passion. “I enjoy making a meaningful impact— improving systems, solving problems, supporting the team, and helping projects

succeed from start to finish. I also deeply value the relationships I’ve built in this industry. The fencing community is unique, hardworking and close-knit, and I am proud to be part of this fence family.” However, Goodwin acknowledges that her drive and passion do not make the job any less difficult. With all the challenges, Goodwin reminds herself of the best advice she’s ever received, “The only way forward is through.” Meaning, challenges are going to come and must be faced head-on. She also acknowledges that this industry, like most male-dominated industries, can make women question their voice, value and place. However, she doesn’t want other women to be discouraged. To young women curious about the fencing industry, Goodwin says, “Your perspective, your skills, and your leadership are needed. Ask questions, learn, speak up, know your worth, and make space for yourself. Then hold the door open for the women who come after you.” Learn more at campanellafence.com.

Stephanie Olynick NATIONAL SALES DIRECTOR, WALLACE PERIMETER SECURITY

In an industry defined by innovation, precision and trusted partnerships, few leaders embody that spirit as clearly as Stephanie Olynick of Wallace Perimeter Security. Her career path reflects both determination and adaptability, qualities that have guided her from early roles in service and customer support to becoming a respected voice in perimeter security today. Olynick brings valuable insight into how the industry is evolving and what it takes to deliver smarter, more secure solutions. This month’s Top of the Chain feature explores her journey and the drive behind her career success. What was your background before entering the fence industry? I began my career in the service industry, which shaped a huge part of who I am today. It taught me how to truly understand people. Also how to listen, problem-solve in real time, multitask under pressure, and deliver a level of customer experience that stays with you long after an interaction. I hold a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree with a double major in marketing and human resources. That blend of strategy, communication, and people-focused leadership continues to serve as the foundation for how I approach both business and team culture today. How did you first get involved in the fencing and perimeter security industry? My entry into the fencing and perimeter security industry began at the front reception desk at Wallace Fences 15 years ago. Reception is the heartbeat of any organization, and this was an experience that proved far more foundational than most people realize. Sitting at the center of every conversation, every challenge and every opportunity gave me a front-row seat to how a company really works. It helped me learn the business from the ground up and understand how each team contributes to the bigger picture. I worked my way up from there, moving into management early on, leading the administrative and inside sales team at Wallace Fences. That experience naturally evolved into a marketing role, and I eventually became responsible for marketing both the local fence division and Wallace Perimeter Security. As my understanding of the industry broadened, I 30

JANUARY 2026 | FENCE NEWS USA

transitioned fully into sales at Wallace Perimeter Security, managing my own territory and building strong relationships with customers, contractors and partners across North America. Those collective experiences ultimately led to my current position as National Sales Director for Wallace Perimeter Security. It’s a role that brings together everything I’ve learned along the way: strategic planning, sales leadership, technical knowledge and a deep commitment to delivering security solutions that truly matter. What are your primary responsibilities? No two days ever look the same, and that is exactly what I love about this role. I lead a talented team across North America, supporting them through coaching, strategy and on-theground problem solving. A large part of my work involves developing our sales approach, guiding project pursuits and ensuring my team has what they need to succeed. I also manage several national accounts, which gives me the opportunity to spend meaningful time with customers and truly understand the industries we serve. Every conversation, whether it is with a data center operator, an airport planner or a general contractor, helps shape how we continue to evolve our product offerings and service model. And of course, no day is complete without putting out a few fires. The unexpected challenges keep the industry exciting, and I enjoy being the person who can help move things forward, find solutions and keep our projects and partnerships on track. What sets Wallace apart? Our heart and our people. I know that sounds

cliché, and it is something many companies claim, but I hear story after story about how someone on our team has gone above and beyond for a customer or a partner. It is remarkable to work with a group that is both highly talented and genuinely passionate about what they do. This culture starts at the top with Korwynn Buhler. His leadership sets the tone for the entire organization and creates an environment where people are empowered to solve problems, support each other and take pride in delivering exceptional work. That combination of expertise and care is what makes Wallace different, and it is the reason our customers trust us with their most critical security needs. How has Wallace evolved in recent years to meet changing market demands? Wallace has continued to evolve by remaining focused on innovation and staying grounded in our core values. One of the biggest commitments we have made is to service. When customers call, we answer. We offer 24/7 technical support. We turn around quotes the same day our customers request them. These commitments shape every decision we make. As we grow, we continually look for new ways to deliver this level of responsiveness. This means strengthening our internal processes, improving communication across teams, and investing in tools that help us move faster and more accurately. Our customers drive our evolution. We listen closely to their needs, their challenges and the trends they are seeing in their industries. That feedback inspires our product development and our approach to service.

We also continue to refine our manufacturing, expand our welded wire and gate technologies, and build strategic partnerships that allow us to support larger and more complex projects across North America. What’s your philosophy on customer service in a security-driven industry? In a security-driven industry, customer service is not optional, it is essential. Every project our customers bring to us is just as important to us as it is to them. The stakes are high. Our customers trust us to help protect what matters most, and we take that responsibility seriously. Customers need to know they are not alone and that they have a team behind them who understands the stakes and is committed to getting it right. Good customer service in this industry is really about trust. It is built through consistency, expertise and a willingness to go the extra mile when it matters most. Ultimately, our job is to make our customers feel confident and supported, not just in the products they choose but also in the people who stand behind those products. What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career? Navigating growth while maintaining the level of service our customers expect from us. As Wallace Perimeter Security has expanded across North America, we have had to scale our processes, our team and our product offerings without losing the responsiveness and personal connection that define us. That balance can be difficult, but it is something we work at every day. How has the company grown in recent years, and what are the goals for future expansion? When I first joined, we were a much smaller team. Today, we have expanded across North America and added so many talented people who bring new ideas, new energy, and new strengths to the company. I am genuinely grateful for the team we have built. Their passion and dedication are a major reason for our success. The company has evolved in every way. Our product lines have expanded, our manufacturing capabilities have grown, and our presence in major markets has strengthened. We have taken on larger and more complex projects while still staying true to the values that shaped us from the beginning. The growth has been incredible to watch.

Have you had any role models or mentors who positively influenced your success? One of the most influential mentors in my career has been Korwynn Buhler, the president of Wallace Perimeter Security. I often say that he took a chance on me long before I knew what I was capable of. He invited me into meetings long before I had the experience to contribute, simply so I could learn. He opened doors that I might not have been ready for on paper, but he trusted that I would grow into the responsibility. That trust shaped my entire path. It taught me the power of believing in people and giving them room to rise. His leadership has always been thoughtful, patient and quietly confident, and it has influenced the way I try to lead today. What advice would you give a woman – or anyone – just starting out in this industry? My advice is to stay curious and ask as many questions as you can. This industry has never-ending opportunities and every person you meet has knowledge that can help you grow. The more you ask, the faster you learn. I also believe strongly in grit. Work hard, take opportunities even when you are not completely sure how you will handle them yet, and trust yourself to figure things out along the way. Some of my biggest career steps came from saying yes first and growing into the responsibility. And above all, be ready to learn, grow and enjoy the ride. This industry moves quickly, it is filled with great people, and it offers opportunities you may not expect when you first start out. If you show up with curiosity, commitment, and an open mind, there is no limit to where you can go. Looking ahead, what are you most excited about, professionally? I am most excited about the momentum we have as a team. After more than 15 years here, it is incredible to see how far we have come and how much opportunity still lies ahead. We have grown in size, capability, and reach, but what excites me most is the people who are driving that growth. We have built a team filled with talent, passion, and a genuine commitment to our customers. The future of Wallace is full of possibility. Our focus is on continuing to grow in a way that supports our customers, strengthens our partnerships, and keeps us at the forefront of the perimeter security industry. We are expanding our presence across North America, strengthening our product lines and continuing to innovate. There is a sense of energy and forward motion that you can feel every day. What inspires me is knowing we are just getting started. I am excited for the projects we will take on, the relationships we will build, and the opportunities we have to keep growing as a company and as a team. Learn more at wallaceperimetersecurity.com.

What has your experience been as a woman in a traditionally male field? When I look back on my career, I can see there were moments when it was challenging. There were times I was the only woman in the room, or one of only a handful of women at a fencing show. Those experiences taught me resilience and helped shape the confidence I have today. What inspires me now is how much the industry has evolved. At Wallace, we have so many talented women leading, innovating, and contributing across the company. I also feel inspired when I attend events like FENCETECH and see more women represented in every area of the industry. The momentum is growing, and it is exciting to be part of a sector that is becoming more inclusive, more diverse and stronger because of it.

Pink Does Not Make It Fit For years, women across multiple industries – including construction, utilities, traffic control, warehousing and transportation – have voiced the same critical concern: finding personal protective equipment (PPE) that truly fits. Some manufacturers attempted to address the issue by introducing “women’s colors” like pink or purple, but as many workers quickly pointed out, color doesn't solve the real problem. Proper fit, accurate sizing, and thoughtful design are what keep people safe. “Color is not the solution, fit is,” says Colleen Gemmill, owner of D.E. Gemmill. “Women don’t just need PPE that looks different. They need PPE

that’s actually designed for their bodies and the work they do.” Her perspective reflects a growing industry-wide understanding: equipment built around a male body often doesn’t translate effectively or safely to a female worker. For example, Gemmill explains that a standard fall-protection harness engineered for male anatomy can cause severe additional injury to a woman during a fall. Today, more manufacturers are recognizing this and producing harnesses specifically for women, making improvements that better protect the chest and pelvic areas while offering a more ergonomic, secure fit. Ill-fitting PPE can also become a safety hazard. Oversized vests can snag on equipment. Gloves with extra material at the fingertips reduce grip and control. “Workers who must constantly adjust poorly fitting PPE experience distraction, discomfort, and fatigue,” says Gemmill. “It’s easy to see how “one-size-fits-all” can quickly become a risk rather than a protective measure.” For years, regulatory guidance offered little clarity on PPE fit. Recently, however, OSHA has emphasized that PPE must fit each individual employee, eliminating the outdated belief that one size can work for everyone. ANSI has also updated its standards to allow more accurate sizing, including true small sizes. These changes are pushing manufacturers to elevate both design and accountability. Many companies now involve women directly in

the design and testing of PPE, ensuring that new products align with real-world needs. Instead of relying on male body dimensions as the default, manufacturers are intentionally engineering gear that reflects the diversity of today’s workforce. “Color options will always be a fun bonus, and many women appreciate having choices,” adds Gemmill. “But the industry’s focus is shifting toward what truly matters: PPE that fits correctly, performs as intended and protects every worker on the job. Better design, better sizing and better commitment to proper fit represent an important step forward in ensuring safety for all.” As awareness grows, D.E. Gemmill Signs & Safety Division has become a go-to resource for companies seeking properly fitting PPE for women, providing resources and education on their website. “We hear the same thing from women all the time: they just want PPE that’s made for them and keeps them safe,” Gemmill says. “The industry is finally listening, and that shift is long overdue.” D.E. Gemmill Signs & Safety Division provides PPE, safety apparel, traffic control products, custom signs and work zone solutions for contractors, utilities, municipalities, industrial workplaces and more. A wide range of women’s PPE designed for proper fit, comfort, and compliance is available. Learn more at degemmill.com/online-store/.

The Xena Spice Safety Boot:

Worksite Protection Designed Just for Women ASTM Certified + OSHA Compliant The Xena Spice Safety Boot was born from the frustration of engineer Ana Kraft, who found that well-made, good fitting, and sleek ASTM-certified work boots designed specifically for women simply didn’t exist. Kraft founded Xena Workwear in 2019 to change that reality, launching a company devoted to creating high-performance safety boots engineered to fit women’s feet and their preferences. Today, Xena offers a wide range of premium work boot styles made to fit women across industries where safety, comfort, and professionalism matter. Kraft’s journey to entrepreneurship stretches across continents. Born in Kazakhstan, she moved to Germany as a child and later earned a degree in International Project Engineering from Reutlingen University before relocating to the United States. Working as a project engineer, she constantly found herself switching between office shoes and ill-fitting work boots before heading out to the manufacturing floor – an inconvenience her male colleagues never had to think about. That daily experience sparked a deeper realization: “How you present yourself and what you’re wearing has a major impact on your self-confidence,” she says. “It’s already an uphill battle for women to fit into certain industries, and a lack of confidence caused by awful workwear is an unnecessary barrier.” The Xena Spice Safety Boot was designed to eliminate that barrier. Built 34

JANUARY 2026 | FENCE NEWS USA

with a premium full-grain leather upper, the boot blends durability with convenience through a lace-and-zipper design that allows precise adjustment with the laces and quick entry using the side zipper. It is ASTM F2413-24 certified, OSHA compliant, and features an impact- and compression-resistant steel toe cap. The slip resistant, dual-density, electrical hazard rated outsole was engineered to withstand chemicals commonly encountered on industrial job sites. Comfort, fit, and beautiful aesthetics are essential elements of the Spice Boot’s appeal. Unlike traditional safety footwear adapted from men’s designs, Xena boots are created from the ground up for women’s biomechanics. They are lightweight, lined with breathable mesh, and equipped with an odorless, impact-absorbing insole. Sizes range from 5-12 and wider options are available to ensure a proper fit. Each pair retails for $200 USD and includes free domestic U.S. shipping, simple 30-day returns and exchanges, and a 6-month warranty. Ana Kraft’s mission remains clear: to give professional women the confidence they deserve to take on any job. With products like the Spice safety boot, Xena Workwear continues to remove barriers for women across the industrial workforce. Learn more and view the full product line at xenaworkwear.com.

Fitting the

Future: How Women’s Workwear is Redefining Safety and Style

It was not that long ago that women working in industrial and safety-focused roles had to make do with ill-fitting, oversized clothing designed for men. If you have ever seen a pair of steel-toe boots that look two sizes too big or coveralls that swallow someone whole, you’ll know the struggle was all too real. Thankfully, times have changed. The 2010s marked a turning point for women’s workwear, especially in safety industries, as regulatory standards and workplace demands drove the shift.

A Push for Safety and Inclusivity

The Rise of Women-Focused Workwear Brands

Occupational safety standards, including those from OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and ANSI (American National Standards Institute), made it clear: properly fitting personal protective equipment (PPE) isn’t optional—it is a necessity. For women, wearing oversized or poorly designed workwear was not just uncomfortable; it was dangerous. Baggy sleeves, loose pants, and improperly fitting steel-toe boots created tripping hazards and safety risks in environments where precision and protection are critical. The message was loud and clear. As a result, businesses began rethinking their offerings to provide better, safer options for women workers.

While major brands were adapting, smaller, women-focused companies started making waves. These brands took innovation and inclusiveness to the next level, blending safety and style in ways the industry hadn’t seen before. • Dovetail Workwear: Based in Portland, Oregon, Dovetail is the largest exclusively women’s workwear company in the northern hemisphere. Their all-season utility apparel is designed to stand up to any job while providing unparalleled comfort and functionality. • Covergalls: Hailing from Canada, Covergalls focuses on creating highquality women’s workwear and PPE that’s both practical and stylish. Their mission is simple: empower women by giving them workwear that works. • Xena Workwear: Headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Xena specializes in stylish steel-toe shoes and apparel for women in industrial and construction fields. Finally, workwear that feels as good as it looks.

Demand for Fit and Functionality The call for better workwear was not just about safety—it was about functionality, comfort, and respect. Women in industrial roles started voicing their concerns: why should they have to “make do” when men had workwear tailored to their needs? Brands responded. Companies began investing in research to design safety garments that fit women’s bodies properly, accounting for different shapes, proportions, and need of movement. This led to the launch of women-specific safety gear like flame-resistant clothing, high-visibility apparel, and steel-toe boots.

The Big Players Step Up Major workwear brands took note and started expanding their women’s lines. For example: • Workwear Outfitters: With iconic lines like Dickies and Bulwark, Workwear Outfitters has rolled out extensive women’s work clothing options, blending durability with tailored fits. • Carhartt: Known for its rugged workwear since 1889, Carhartt has developed a women’s line that stays true to the brand’s reputation for functionality and toughness while offering designs that fit women better. These industry giants set the tone for inclusivity, demonstrating that meeting the needs of women workers isn’t just good ethics—it is good business.

Why It Matters This movement is not just about clothes; it is about equality and empowerment. For too long, women in industrial roles were an afterthought when it came to safety and comfort on the job. But as more companies acknowledge the economic and social benefits of meeting the needs of women workers, the narrative is changing. By designing workwear that’s functional, safe, and tailored for women, the industry is sending a clear message: women belong in these spaces, and their contributions are valued.

Looking Ahead The rise of women’s workwear isn’t slowing down. As the workforce continues to diversify, the demand for well-fitting, high-quality workwear will only grow. Whether it’s through established giants like Carhartt or innovative newcomers like Dovetail, the future of women’s workwear is bright—and better fitting than ever. After all, when women are equipped to do their jobs safely and confidently, everyone wins.

LLC, a leading worldwide manufacturer of Miller® brand arc welding equipment, has announced the release of a new line of personal protective equipment (PPE) designed specifically for women in welding and related trades. The launch marks a step forward in creating jobsite gear that prioritizes function and fit, helping all workers perform at their best without the discomfort posed by oversized or ill-fitting PPE. For too long, many women in the trades have had to rely on standard men’s PPE, often sacrificing mobility and proper protection. This new line offers a purpose-built alternative that was intentionally engineered to offer a more tailored and inclusive fit and reflects the needs of a more diverse workforce. Redefining Workwear for Tradeswomen For decades, the skilled trades have been shaped by tools, materials, and safety standards designed primarily for men. As more women enter the industry, it has become clear that properly designed workwear is not just about comfort; it’s about safety, performance, and representation. Yet, many tradeswomen have had to adapt to ill-fitting clothing, repurpose men’s workwear, or compromise on durability and functionality, impacting mobility, efficiency, and workplace safety. Historically, manufacturers have taken a one-size-fits-all approach, simply downsizing men’s workwear rather than designing gear that truly meets women’s needs. However, with women’s participation in the trades rising from 8.9% in 2010 to 11% today, the demand for functional, well-fitting workwear is gaining industry attention. Some manufacturers are now prioritizing field research, tradeswomen’s input, and real-world testing to create apparel that enhances mobility, comfort, and protection. Rather than forcing tradeswomen to adapt to outdated standards, the industry is beginning to adapt to them, ensuring that workwear is built for the job and the diverse workforce shaping its future. Field Research: Identifying Key Challenges Field research plays a crucial role in understanding the realities of the jobsite and ensuring workwear meets the demands of tradeswomen. By engaging directly with workers in the field, research teams have gathered firsthand insights, allowing product development to be driven by real-world needs rather than assumptions. Through this research, a clear pattern emerged, highlighting the most significant challenges tradeswomen face with existing workwear: • Fit and mobility issues – Work pants were often too stiff, low-waisted, or restrictive, limiting movement. • Lack of durability – Many women’s options sacrificed durability for comfort, leading to premature wear and tear on the jobsite. • Limited protection features – Key elements like reinforced knees, tool storage, and breathable yet durable fabrics were either missing or poorly designed for tradeswomen. 42

JANUARY 2026 | FENCE NEWS USA

Translating Research into Product Development Understanding these frustrations, brands like Milwaukee Tool took a research-driven, jobsite-tested approach to designing women’s workwear. Rather than simply scaling down men’s clothing, the design process prioritized ergonomics, fit, and durability. Direct feedback from tradeswomen played a crucial role in shaping practical solutions tailored to real jobsite demands. “We took the time to be in the field and truly understand what was needed to create a full breadth of line that dressed women from head to toe – not just release a single item,” says Nadia Sinner, Product Manager at Milwaukee Tool. “Every cut, stich and loop were meticulously intentional, ensuring that each piece addressed the real challenges tradeswomen face on the job.” This approach led to key adjustments that improve functionality and performance in demanding work environments. For example, the GRIDIRON™ Women’s Double Knee Jogger Pants offer a high-rise, straight-fit design with built-in stretch and an elastic-integrated waistband, developed to provide greater mobility while staying secure throughout the workday. Wide waistbands enhance support, while deep, durable pockets offer convenient storage for tools and essentials. Additionally, reinforced belt loops prevent sagging when wearing tool belts, ensuring both stability and durability on the job. To further address comfort and wearability, the FREEFLEX™ Midweight Pullover Hoodie was designed with extra room to accommodate ponytails and longer hairstyles, allowing for a better fit. Shirts were tailored with drop-tail hems to provide better coverage when bending or reaching overhead, preventing exposure and ensuring a more secure fit. These updates required rethinking traditional designs to better support tradeswomen working in dynamic environments without sacrificing comfort. Through continuous field testing, Milwaukee® refined each element to balance comfort and performance, ensuring that every stitch of workwear is built for the realities of the trades.

Made by Tradeswomen for Tradeswomen Authenticity is an essential element in developing workwear that truly meets the needs of tradeswomen, delivering solutions that will meet the demands of a professional. Creating Milwaukee’s Women’s Workwear line, for example, required more than just research—it demanded the voices and expertise of women at every stage. A female-led team played a crucial role in shaping decisions, ensuring that fit, durability, and functionality addressed real-world jobsite challenges. Women across sourcing, purchasing, legal, and marketing influenced every phase of development, ensuring that both product design and brand messaging aligned with tradeswomen’s needs. Their insights resulted in workwear that is not only functional and durable but also genuinely representative of those it serves. By maintaining authenticity throughout the research and design process, manufacturers can reinforce the importance of listening to those who know the job best. Setting a New Standard The introduction of high-performance, women-specific workwear is more than just a few product launches—it marks a shift in how the industry supports tradeswomen. As their representation in skilled trades grows, so does the demand for apparel and resources designed to meet their needs. Ongoing field research, product testing, and innovation are driving the evolution of workwear, ensuring it keeps pace with the workforce. Looking ahead, the focus remains on expanding solutions and enhancing materials to provide gear that offers both functionality and longevity in demanding jobsite conditions. Women’s presence in the trades is no longer emerging—it is firmly established. Advancing functional, durable, and thoughtfully designed workwear is a critical step in reinforcing their role in shaping the future of construction and skilled trades. Attendees walking the show floor at FENCETECH can stop by the Pine Creek Chainlink booth to meet the owners and learn how this longstanding manufacturer – one of the largest in Indiana – continues to raise the bar for quality and consistency in chain link fencing. Known for its dependable domestic production and contractor-focused approach, Pine Creek will be showcasing its full lineup of galvanized and vinyl-coated chain link fabric, along with a range of sizes, gauges, and coatings designed to meet the demands of residential, commercial, and industrial projects. The company is a dealer for the DSI Regis line

of aluminum fencing, which offers unmatched durability, easy maintenance and timeless elegance. The Pine Creek team will also spotlight the capabilities of its gate department, which offers solutions that complement perimeter systems and help contractors deliver complete, professional installations. At the core is the Ascent M8, a feature-rich cellular access control unit with built-in 4G LTE connectivity, keypad, call button, and support for the Summit Control app. It enables access via phone call, text, or app, while giving property managers full control over users, schedules, and activity history—all managed remotely through the intuitive Summit Control cloud portal. But the real game-changer for installing dealers is the Ascent Link Mesh Network, a proprietary wireless mesh communication system that connects multiple access points, such as doors, gates, and pedestrian entries, without the need to run cabling to each one. This allows for much faster, less invasive installations, especially in environments where trenching is costly or impractical. Whether you're securing a pool gate, clubhouse entry, or multiple pedestrian doors, Ascent Link enables these points to wirelessly communicate with a centralized Ascent controller (like the M8), leveraging a reliable, self-healing mesh network that ensures consistent performance across all access

points. This increased flexibility reduces install time, lowers costs, and opens new opportunities to secure areas that were once challenging to reach. Benefits for Installing Dealers: • Faster installs with less trenching and wiring • Easily scalable—add access points without extra infrastructure • Ideal for outdoor areas like pools, gyms, and clubhouses • Cloud-managed for fewer service calls and easier updates • Unlock new RMR streams with ongoing service and support Security Brands’ U.S.-engineered, dealer-first solutions empower you to tackle complex projects with confidence—and turn every install into long-term revenue. With Ascent M8 and Ascent Link, you're not just installing access control; you’re delivering a premium experience while growing your business. Learn more at securitybrandsinc.com.

Codelocks Launches New KitLockNano Boasting Modern Design and Intuitive Control Codelocks has launched its KitLockNano, a redefined compact lock, engineered with a stronger build and smarter design. The upgraded lock delivers improved performance and functionality in the same ultra-small footprint as the original, while including a key override for complete control in any situation. Ideal for lockers, cabinets, and drawers, the KitLockNano addresses the growing demand for modern, reliable access control in environments like workplaces, sports facilities, hotels and resorts. “We’ve kept the compact form of the original product, but totally reengineered the Nano to be more hard-wearing and have better usability thanks to its smarter features,” says Matt Welty, vice president at Codelocks Inc. “As well as being tougher, it delivers the right combination of sleek design and practical functionality that modern businesses demand. It looks great in a range of modern spaces, like healthcare facilities and corporate offices, while also providing the operational flexibility they need thanks to the private and public functionality.” The KitLockNano’s private function allows repeated use of the same code for dedicated users, while the Public Function enables temporary four-digit codes that automatically erase after use. A red/blue LED indicator provides an at-a-glance locked/unlocked status. “Private and public functionality means organizations deploying the KitLockNano in coworking spaces, college campuses, fitness centers, and other applications can maximize their return on investment. The same lockers can serve dedicated and temporary users alike, while also eliminating the operational headaches, costs, and security risks of traditional key-based systems, yet still offering the reassurance of a physical key override for emergency access,” says Welty. Installing the KitLockNano is simple, as the lock easily retrofits into existing cam lock placements using just two additional screws. New installations require only three small holes, allowing locksmiths and installers to fit the lock in minutes. It can be surface-mounted or fitted flush, maintaining a clean aesthetic while ensuring easy battery access. The key override remains accessible, making it simple for facilities managers to regain access if needed. It is also available in vertical or right-hand horizontal orientations. The KitLockNano makes maintenance and management easier. Powered by two AAA batteries, it can perform up to 15,000 operations during the typical life of the batteries, includes a low battery indicator function, and has comprehensive code management with Master, Sub-Master and Technician codes. It is IP54 rated and equipped with a key override that is protected by a dust cover over the key cylinder. Learn more at codelocks.us

TimberTech Harvest+ Decking Selected as a Good Housekeeping 2026 Home Reno Award Winner TimberTech Harvest+ Collection™ from the Advanced PVC Decking line has been named a winner in Good Housekeeping's 2026 Home Reno Awards. The TimberTech® Harvest+ Collection was recognized for its superior combination of realistic aesthetics, long-term performance, and sustainable manufacturing. "TimberTech Harvest+ Decking is a standout in the Sustainability category on the fact that the American-made decking consists of up to 65% recycled materials, including post-construction vinyl that would otherwise end up in the landfill," says Dan DiClerico, Home Improvement & Outdoor Lab director, the Good Housekeeping Institute. Each year, engineers and product experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute, together with a team of outside experts, spend months rigorously evaluating the best products and services for home remodeling and

maintenance. As part of the evaluation process, analysts send products into the homes of consumer testers to see how they perform in real-world conditions, while Good Housekeeping design pros weigh in on style and aesthetics. To determine the winners, judges focus on key attributes including quality, value, efficiency, sustainability and overall design appeal. Both the durability and authentic wood look of the Harvest+ Collection stood out among the judges. "During extensive lab tests, our experts found that the decking is virtually indistinguishable from real wood with none of the maintenance concerns—meaning there is no annual staining and sealing and you won't need to worry about splinters and popped fasteners," says DiClerico. Learn more about all TimberTech products at timbertech.com.

AFA’s New Mission: Uniting the Industry for Growth by Michael Reed executive director, American Fence Association

There’s something powerful about the beginning of a new year. It brings with it a sense of possibility. Each new year is an opportunity to reflect, look ahead, and choose with purpose the future we want to build. For the American Fence Association, this year carries a special significance. It marks the official launch of our new mission statement. AFA UNITES THE INDUSTRY TO BUILD COMMUNITY, DEVELOP LEADERS, AND INSPIRE GROWTH. It’s a straightforward, powerful vision that states who we are and where we’re going. UNITING THE INDUSTRY When I think about unity in the fence industry, I don’t picture everyone agreeing on everything. I picture something deeper: people showing up for one another when it matters. Unity is on display when experienced professionals take the time to share their wisdom and expertise with the next generation of professionals at AFA University. Unity shows up at FENCETECH when installers, suppliers and our business partners set aside day-to-day responsibilities to enjoy each other’s company and recharge together. Unity is the glue when local competitors work together on a Purple Heart Homes project, refusing to let company logos get in the way of helping a veteran. These examples remind me of AFA’s origin story. In 1956, suppliers and contractors banded together to address a shortage of portland cement. That collaboration, born from necessity, sparked a shared belief that we accomplish more together than we ever could alone. That belief fuels today’s AFA. BUILDING COMMUNITY Community isn’t defined by geography. It’s defined by shared values and purpose. When you’re part of the AFA community, there is an understanding that you’re part of something bigger than yourself. The people involved in AFA are here because they care about lifting their fellow fencer, raising standards and building an industry everyone can be proud of.

70

JANUARY 2026 | FENCE NEWS USA

I’ve watched AFA members step forward to share best practices that could easily have been kept as competitive advantages. I’ve watched AFA volunteers invest countless hours because they believe that when contractors, distributors and manufacturers improve together, everyone wins. When you participate in an AFA special intertest group, a chapter meeting, or walk the floor at FENCETECH, you can feel it, AFA is a community built on generosity, and a genuine belief in one another’s potential. DEVELOPING LEADERS One of the strongest commitments in our new mission is developing leaders. For AFA, leadership development isn’t a buzz word; it’s an intentional process. It means shaping men and women who inspire others to reach their full potential. AFA is helping to create industry leaders who model ethics, practice humility, and believe in serving others. Every time I see someone take a course, earn a certification, join a Leadership Academy cohort, or share a new idea that stretches their comfort zone, I’m reminded of what’s possible when we invest in people. INSPIRING GROWTH Growth is a word that carries many meanings, and our new mission embraces all of them. Professional growth. Growth shapes you into a better communicator, a stronger manager and a more confident leader. Business growth. Scaling your business means embracing innovation, adopting new practices, learning new skills and having access to relationships that allow a company to take the next step. Industry growth. When individuals grow, companies grow. When companies grow, the industry grows. When the industry grows, the communities we serve gain stronger businesses, safer homes and better protected spaces.

A MISSION WORTH STANDING BEHIND This new mission gives the industry a foundation to build the future, and a reminder of the legacy we’ve inherited. The fence industry has always been made up of people who work with their hands, think with their heads and lead with their hearts. It’s an industry built by problem-solvers, innovators and craftsmen who care deeply about what they build and who they build it for. My hope is that every AFA member reads this mission and sees themselves in it. Because the truth is, this mission isn’t just about AFA. It’s about you. Your contribution to an industry that has the opportunity to be stronger and more united than ever. AFA unites the industry to build community, develop leaders, and inspire growth. What a way to describe the purpose and the vision of your trade association.

Michael Reed has been involved with the American Fence Association for nine years, the last three serving as the executive director. Michael loves AFA's history and culture and believes in the power of associations to solve problems big and small. He's focused on building an AFA that develops leaders, increases professionalism, and plays a leadership role in our industry's growth and success. His passion is leadership, and he's currently finishing his doctoral dissertation on trust and leadership development. Show Me the Money Cash is King Collections Procedure Who wouldn’t like to increase their cash flow, decrease accounts receivable, and improve customer relationships, all at the same time? Sounds too good to be true, right? Wrong, that is exactly what a sound, well-managed accounts receivable collections procedure can do for your fence company. Excessive accounts receivable will sink any company, and the best assurance you will get paid when the job is complete is the one that addresses collections at the earliest possible stage and is consistent and thorough in dealing with past due accounts. I want to address collections for residential accounts as commercial work is a completely different animal. For these customers, your first responsibility for collecting money due is to be sure the customer is satisfied with the job, crews and overall work. It is impossible to collect money from unhappy customers, so do not assume anything about the job. Instead, call and ask. This call must be perceived as a “customer satisfaction call,” and not a call to collect money. Naturally, your intentions for making the call is primarily to get paid, but this must not be obvious. The customer, commercial or residential, must feel you consider them to be very important and their satisfaction is paramount. Remember, this is to be done by phone or in person, NOT via the internet, by email or by text. This must be a person-toperson conversation. This call serves to promote two very important goals: establishing goodwill and a professional image in with the customer and helping collect your money as quickly as possible. A customer

satisfaction call, made in a timely manner, is among the most important calls you can make for your company. Here is an example of what you might want to say when calling a delinquent customer for the first time: “This is _________, from your Fence Company. I am calling to make sure everything is satisfactory with your job.” Pause and wait for a response. If the customer has a complaint, this must be addressed immediately. This is the first phase of the call, the customer satisfaction phase, and it must be addressed prior to moving on to the collections portion of the call. “Also, I would like to be sure you received our invoice for $__________ dated _________.” Pause and wait for a response. If the customer has not received this bill, this should be addressed immediately. If the bill was not received, see that a copy is emailed or faxed to them, and that a duplicate is mailed immediately. If the bill was received and no problems exist that would delay payment, simply respond: “Thank you, we appreciate your business. I’ll indicate in my records that everything is satisfactory and we can expect your payment today? Wait for them to reply. “If not today, when can we expect payment? The due date is ____________.” It is highly recommended that the customer be present to inspect the job upon completion, if possible. If the job was sub-contracted, payment should be withheld from the subcontractor until the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of the company and the customer. Ultimately, assumptions and procrastination are

WORKING hard and putting in long hours running a fencing operation is one thing that most of you are quite familiar with. However, making a substantial profit and sustaining a quality life style with security and peace of mind is something that far too few fencing companies enjoy. Profit Builders International and their Business Partners in the fencing industry would like to help you get there and beyond. These are things that are critical to successfully run your fencing company, Make More Money, achieve financial security and ultimately secure your future and peace of mind.

by Tom Luby, owner of Profit Builders International an Accounts Receivable Collectors worst enemy. I have consulted with fencing companies who simply wait for the customer to take the initiative to send in the check, never contacting them to see if there is a problem or complaint regarding a completed job. If you don’t ask them for the money, many customers will simply never voluntarily pay. Take the initiative, don’t wait. Regardless of the excuses given, the purpose of the contact with the customer is to get a commitment for payment and collect money due, while at the same time keeping the customer happy and satisfied. As you follow the delinquent account through the collection process, it is essential to maintain a documented history of the dates, times and people you speak to, the steps taken, commitments made, and other pertinent data. Collections MUST be done in a persistent, timely manner. Procedures can be established and work very well with whatever CRM (customer relations management) software you use. Write to me to obtain an A/R collections form if you like or create one for yourself as a tool to keep track of these accounts. This will serve as a key document should you have to go to court to collect. Without a doubt, collections are among the most important cornerstones in the standard operating procedures for fence contractors. If you don’t get paid you go out of business, it’s just that simple. A well-placed customer satisfaction call can head off most of your collection problems. Don’t Delay, Collect Today!

A year ago, I wrote in this column that there were “a few critical areas in our industry which need to be watched as we start off 2025.” (Note: The column was written after the 2024 election but before the new administration was sworn in.) Here is a quick review of how accurate those predictions were: Tariff Wars – what I said then: The Trump Administration has been clear that they will use the threat of U.S. tariffs on imported goods as part of both their foreign policy and their fiscal policy. This could affect materials costs and availability, supply chain costs and logistics problems, jobsite delays due to materials shortages, cost overruns on jobs already under construction, and higher pricing problems on future projects due to these cost increases. What really happened: Needless to say, the Trump administration made good on their threats, creating a day-to-day environment of uncertainty regarding tariffs that continues a year later. It looks as though this strategy could be the norm for the next three years. It is hard to quantify what impact this had on the fence industry in 2025, but there are ominous signs of it creating both short- and long-term problems. It did cause a bump in prices on fence-related materials and finished products moving between the U.S. and Canada. More importantly, it caused a rift between the U.S. and a long-time, indispensable partner. It will be interesting to get the final data on 2025 imports of fence-industry products.

FAMILY-OWNED FENCE COMPANY SEEKING ACQUISITION OPPORTUNITIES Established, family-operated fence company looking to acquire additional locations in the Southeastern and Southern U.S. Preference given to businesses located in Texas, Florida, and Georgia, but all neighboring markets will be considered. Ideal for owners looking to transition with care and preserve their company’s legacy. Please send information to: fencefamily@yahoo.com

Environmental and Sustainability Efforts – what I said then: Trump’s people have also intimated they will be trying to reduce some of the current policies regarding emissions, the production of electric vehicles, renewable fuels and other areas. Fence professionals need to look at this area because it may affect your company’s transportation costs, environmental impact requirements for fencing products and their installation, and fewer restrictions on materials used on federal projects. What really happened: This was actually an understatement on my part. The administration has already made clear it will support continued development of fossil and nuclear fuels capabilities, while reducing its investment in renewable fuels systems. In addition, as I am writing this column, the administration is rolling back fuel emissions and fuel efficiency (mpg) requirements for cars and trucks. These actions could be seen as good news/bad news. There is a chance the lowered car and truck efficiency requirements could keep the overall cost of new vehicles somewhat lower for fence industry companies. The downside is that lower fuel efficiency means higher gas costs to run older vehicles. As for the renewable fuels market (a huge market for fencing products and systems), CLFMI members were told by one of the largest general contractors of solar project installations in the United States, that developers and investors of solar projects are playing things very conservatively going forward. They said the market still looked like it was in moderate growth mode for the next couple of years, but that a number of future projects are already stalling in their preliminary stages. Economists are rethinking their projections on the growth of renewables. State and Locally Funded Projects – what I said then: We should not forget there are numerous projects at the provincial, state, county and local levels that will not necessarily be impacted by federal government policy. In addition, some of the largest infrastructure projects funded by the IIJA bill passed three years ago are underway and already funded, so there will continue to be work though those projects.

hat really happened: It looks as though W these projects can still be good opportunities for fence contractors going forward. There is some uncertainty about funding future projects, as states rely on federal funding for many infrastructure and energy projects. Any reduction in that funding (due to political or fiscal caprices) affects their ability to use state funds for needed work. Contractors are reminded to use “early access” to the planning of new state and local projects by being actively involved in organizations that have architects, construction engineers and construction specifiers as members. These professionals participate in the early planning and designing of projects, and perimeter security is always one of their priorities. Obviously, there is a LOT more going on that affects the fencing market’s growth and health. We will discuss these throughout the year, especially when new opportunities, or concerns, arise. I hope I can help you prepare for some of them.

Start-Up Stories

Those on the outside may think owning and growing a business is glamorous. They see the current building, the staff, the equipment and the profits. What they don’t see are the startups. The small beginnings, the ever-present worry, the dreams and the everyday decisions that can either make it or break it. Fence News honors those who put their hat in the self-employment ring and built their business one small step at a time.

Quality Service Brings Long-Term Success Good Shepherd Fence Company began with a simple belief: people deserve a fence company they can trust; one that values craftsmanship, integrity, and doing the job right. In 1996, co-owner and founder, Chad Barnes, started the business out of his home garage, installing residential wood, chain link, and vinyl fencing. With only a small team, long hours, and plenty of learning moments, the company worked hard to earn every customer’s confidence. Today, Good Shepherd Fence is proud to be known as Indiana’s most trusted fence company. Since reincorporation in 2019, Team GSFC is now lead by co-owners Shane Catton, Chad Barnes and Jacob Barnes. Focused on technology, tools, team member development and innovation, Good Shepherd continues to expand its commercial, access control, sports facility, netting and municipal divisions, as well as partnerships with schools, HOAs, parks and recreation departments.
