ProWood®, a leading manufacturer and distributor of premium pressure-treated lumber and part of UFP Industries, Inc., has released its 2026 State of the Industry Report. The report examines how shifting homeowner expectations are reshaping the construction landscape—from supply chain strategies and product innovation to workforce dynamics and purchasing priorities.
"What we're seeing is a convergence of factors reshaping how the industry operates, from homeowner expectations to labor availability to product performance," says Jeff Crisp, vice president of operations at ProWood. "Supply chain strategy is part of that shift, alongside changes in who's building, what materials are trusted, and how long-term performance is being defined."
The report translates those converging forces into several key trends shaping the future of construction, including: Supply Chain Realignment: Manufacturers and distributors are moving toward more regional sourcing and localized distribution models to improve reliability, shorten lead times, and better align inventory with jobsite demand.
Changing Consumer Priorities: Homeowners are shifting their purchasing mindsets from "what's available" to "what lasts," placing greater value on durability, longevity, craftsmanship, and trusted brands.
An Evolving Workforce: The construction workforce continues to diversify, with women now holding more than 1.3 million jobs, a 53% increase over the past decade, and Hispanic builders comprising nearly one-third of the workforce while driving 59% of industry growth between 2018 and 2023, according to the National Hispanic Construction Alliance (NHCA).
Improved Innovation and Performance: Ongoing advancements in wood preservation and pressure-treatment standards are extending lumber lifespan—a meaningful measure of sustainability.
The report also features firsthand perspectives from experts on how evolving materials, new products like ProWood's TrueFrame™ Joist, and supply chain strategies are shaping the future of outdoor construction.
"When we're designing and building outdoor spaces, durability and consistency matter just as much as appearance," said Jonathan Moeller, owner of Colorado Custom Covers & Decks, who is featured in a builder Q&A within the State of the Industry Report. "Products like ProWood's TrueFrame Joist give us confidence in the structure beneath the deck and deliver lasting performance homeowners can rely on."

Since 2003, Abbey Hardware has focused on supplying the fencing trade with the products crews use every day — and making it easier to get them.
Fence contractors don’t have time to manage multiple vendors or coordinate split shipments. Jobs move quickly, and when materials arrive separately or late, schedules slip and labor costs increase.
Consolidating orders matters.
That’s why Abbey stocks a complete range under one roof: nails, screws, hinges, latches, gate locks, wire fencing and the tools built specifically for the trade. Instead of placing multiple purchase orders and paying freight from different suppliers, contractors can streamline ordering and simplify deliveries.
Fewer shipments. Fewer delays. Fewer headaches.
But availability is only part of the equation. Choosing the right hardware is just as critical. A hinge not rated for the weight of a gate, a latch that doesn’t align properly, or fasteners unsuited to the material can lead to sagging gates, premature wear, and costly callbacks. Small decisions during installation can have long-term consequences.
Abbey’s team understands those challenges because they’ve worked alongside fencing professionals for more than two decades.

When customers call, they’re speaking with knowledgeable staff who understand gate weight, hardware compatibility, and jobsite demands. The goal isn’t simply to sell a product – it’s to help contractors choose the right hardware and tools the first time. Fewer callbacks protect more than margins. It protects reputation. Over the years, Abbey has continued to strengthen its offering with dependable product lines such as ABBEY GATEPRO and FENCEPRO, while maintaining the depth contractors expect from a true one-stop supplier.
Being built for the fence industry means understanding how projects should actually run, with tight timelines, tight margins and no room for preventable issues.
For more than 20 years, Abbey Hardware has supported fencing contractors with consolidated freight options, reliable inventory, knowledgeable guidance and products designed to perform in the field.
Because in fencing, getting it right the first time isn’t optional, it’s the standard.

Backyards are no longer just yards surrounded by a fence. They are becoming fully designed living spaces. As homeowners invest in decks, patios, outdoor kitchens, pergolas and entertainment areas, fencing contractors have the opportunity to play a central role in defining these spaces. This section explores the latest outdoor living products, trends and solutions helping contractors expand their offerings and grow their businesses.

Outdoor living spaces have become a defining feature for today’s homeowners. What was once a simple deck or patio is now being transformed into a complete extension of the home. designed for relaxation, entertaining and everyday living. Features like railing systems, pergolas, and outdoor lighting play a key role in shaping these spaces, adding both function and architectural style.
GreenWay Fence & Railing Supply works with contractors to provide railing systems, pergolas, lighting and other outdoor living products that help bring these spaces together. By focusing on fabrication quality and dependable service, GreenWay supports contractors who are looking to deliver finished outdoor environments that are both durable and visually appealing.
“Homeowners are thinking differently about their outdoor spaces,” says Ray Yoder, general manager at GreenWay. “They want an area that feels comfortable and intentional – almost like an outdoor room.”
Railing systems often serve as the foundation of these projects. Beyond providing safety for decks, porches and stairways, Yoder says modern railing designs contribute to the overall aesthetic of a home. With a variety of colors, profiles and infill options available, contractors can match the railing style to both traditional and contemporary home designs. Pergolas have also grown in popularity as homeowners look for ways to define outdoor spaces. Whether installed over a patio, deck or seating area, pergolas add structure and visual interest while helping create a natural gathering place. Many homeowners also incorporate lighting into these structures, extending the usability of the space into the evening hours.
Lighting plays a subtle but important role in outdoor design. Post lights, accent lighting and integrated railing lighting can enhance visibility and

safety while creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Yoder says when combined with pergolas and thoughtfully designed railing systems, lighting helps tie the entire outdoor living space together.
Durability remains an important factor as well. “Today’s railing systems and pergola structures are designed to withstand changing weather conditions while maintaining their appearance over time,” explains Yoder. “This combination of strength and style makes them a practical investment for homeowners who want outdoor spaces that will last.”
As outdoor living continues to grow in popularity, contractors are finding that railing, pergolas and lighting offer opportunities to create more complete and personalized spaces for their customers – space that invite homeowners to spend more time outside and enjoy their surroundings. PROJECT: Bisby at Newport
LOCATION: Manhattan, New York City
INSTALLATION: Thomas Windows, Inc.
LOCATION: Manhattan, New York
PRODUCT: Easy Glass Prime Base
When it comes to modern high-rise residential design, glass railing systems are increasingly the preferred choice for architects and developers seeking unobstructed views and clean architectural lines. At the stunning new Bisby at Newport development in Manhattan, those design goals were achieved through the installation of Q-railing’s Easy Glass Prime base shoe system across thousands of feet of balcony railing.
Installed by Thomas Windows, Inc., the project incorporated approximately 17,000 linear feet of Easy Glass Prime base shoe, delivering both structural performance and sleek visual appeal for the building’s expansive balconies.
Designed specifically for commercial and high-rise applications, Syndi Sim, director of sales and business development with Q-railing, says Easy Glass Prime provides the strength and precision required for demanding structural conditions while maintaining the minimalist aesthetic that glass railing systems are known for.
The system is engineered to withstand design pressures up to 200 pounds per square foot, making it suitable for installations where wind loads and building code requirements demand high-performance solutions. Easy Glass Prime accommodates laminated glass thicknesses ranging from 11/16-inch up to 1-inch, allowing flexibility in design and specification.
“A key advantage of the Easy Glass Prime system is the inclusion of Q-railing’s award-winning Q-disc,” adds Sim, “which simplifies installation and allows installers to fine-tune glass alignment quickly and efficiently.”
The Q-disc technology enables installers to adjust the position of glass panels after placement, helping ensure consistent alignment across long runs of railing, an essential capability on large-scale projects such as Bisby. This adjustment capability not only improves final aesthetics but also significantly reduces installation time and labor on complex balcony systems.
To support a wide range of architectural styles, Easy Glass Prime is available in several finish options including mill finish, brushed anodized aluminum and RAL 9005 matte black. Custom powder coating and wet paint finishes are also available, providing additional flexibility for architects and designers seeking a specific color palette.
Beyond aesthetics and ease of installation, the Easy Glass Prime system is engineered and tested to meet rigorous safety and performance standards. The system carries Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance (NOA) certification and an ICC-ES Service Report (ESR-4688), offering assurance that it meets stringent structural and building code requirements.
“At Bisby at Newport, the system delivers both the strength required for a large-scale balcony installation and the clean, modern look that today’s urban residential developments demand,” says Sim, “providing residents with unobstructed views while maintaining safety and durability.”
For contractors and architects working on similar commercial or highrise applications, Easy Glass Prime demonstrates how engineered railing systems can streamline installation while achieving a refined finished product.

Ligman Lighting USA has launched MicroPRIM™, an innovative powder coat paint technology that inspires architectural and lighting design freedom.
The outdoor lighting design challenge remains the same: delivering an exceptional visitor experience during the day and at night. When selecting luminaires and poles, designers are challenged to choose between daytime aesthetics or nighttime illumination. When paired with the uncertainty of how well the finish will resist fading, scratching, cracking or vandalism over time, creativity stifles and finish color becomes the last decision made. Finish selection should come first as it sets the tone for the daytime aesthetic and now can be done with the knowledge it will look the same in year 10 as it did on day 10.
MicroPRIM™ technology enables designers to achieve a unique creative daytime visual presence and meet all required illumination levels, while also providing surface protections against UV, scratches, corrosion, and graffiti. MicroPRIM is available in any RAL or Pantone color, and patterns that include nature-inspired finishes such as wood and stone, as well as materialinspired patterns such as cement, carbon fiber, metal and more. Imagination is the only limitation as high-resolution logos, imagery, scenery or branded graphics can also be permanently infused into a Ligman luminaire, pole or bollard finish. MicroPRIM empowers specifiers to introduce artistry, individuality, and surface protections into any landscape design and meets AAMA 2605 architectural coating standards.
"MicroPRIM brings a new dimension to outdoor lighting design," says Austin Ashe, president of Ligman Lighting USA. "Ligman's engineering expertise has evolved significantly over the past 30 years. Since introducing MicroVOS (Variable Optical System), we've focused on delivering nighttime illumination performance. Now, with MicroPRIM, our unique form factors and structures can be finished with any colors or creative design that gives each lighting asset a distinctive daytime role within its built environment."
All MicroPRIM-treated products are backed by the company's industryleading 10-year warranty, demonstrating dedication to delivering products that perform both functionally and aesthetically for years to come.

FRAMING SYSTEM FIRE SAFE: Deck framing that meets California’s Code

Joe Frith, owner of Mountain Deck in California, has spent more than two decades building decks that elevate outdoor living in the valley. Like many others in the trades, he started small, taking on one project at a time. Every project is driven by a passion to deliver unique outdoor living spaces that are nothing short of pieces of art. Years ago that passion led Joe to take on a deck project that would prove to be a turning point, reshaping not just his business, but also his idea of what the future of deck building looks like.
In 2019, Frith was approached by a homeowner with a big vision and an even bigger challenge. “They were tired of their old, worn-out wood deck and wanted something different,” he recalls. “Something modern; something that wouldn’t look old and tired after just a year.”
That ruled out pressure treated wood, since wood structures exposed to the elements will deteriorate over time. The prioritization of durability and longevity led Frith and the homeowner to explore wood-alternative solutions, like Evolution steel deck framing by Fortress Building Products. While his client was immediately sold on the sleek, modern aesthetic of the framing system, Frith had never worked with it before. “I had no idea what the product was and didn’t know how it went together,” he admits. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Frith didn’t let that stop him. He said yes to his first steel deck framing project: a three-story, 3,500-squarefoot outdoor living space.
As expected with any first-time project, Frith made his share of mistakes. He rebuilt entire sections of the deck to better understand the framing system and deliver an outdoor living space he was proud of. “The first build will feel intimidating, no matter the size,” he explains. “But every deck after that? We flew through it.”
By the time the project wrapped, Frith had mastered the new deck framing material and the engineered interlocking joist and ledger system. Ultimately, he had discovered an entirely new way of deck building. Since
then, he has not looked back. Today, every outdoor living space Mountain Deck builds leverages the proven performance of Evolution steel deck framing.
“It is the best product I’ve found. I’ve tested every new material out there, and this is the one I trust,” Frith shares. “As a material, wood will be gone in 30 years. I tell my clients, if you’re going to be spending all this money, why not spend it once on steel deck framing and never have to worry about it again?”
To Frith’s point, steel is resilient to most tangible threats, including rot and decay, fungi, pests (such as termites) and weathering. This makes it possible to sideline major issues such as deterioration after long-term exposure to moisture and splitting and warping as a result of extreme temperature changes. On top of that, Evolution steel deck framing is backed by a 25-year limited manufacturer warranty, which further allows builders and homeowners alike to count on its long-term performance.
But it’s not just steel’s performance that has Frith coming back to the material time and time again. He also loves its feel and aesthetic. “When you walk on a steel-framed deck, it feels solid, yet looks clean and elegant. It will always give a modern vibe.” His clients notice it too. “I get so many compliments on this framing that people now call me ‘Frith the Steel Guy,’” he laughs.
One of Frith’s more recent projects perfectly illustrates how far he’s come since his initial Evolution build. Toward the end of 2024, Mountain Deck was called in to replace an aging wooden deck in Portola Valley, California. The frame from 1984 stretched the length of the house but barely extended 10 feet out. Decades of exposure to the elements had taken its toll. It was rotten, warped and dangerously unstable.
Frith’s clients, a couple in their 40s, were looking to do more than replace the original deck structure. They envisioned something bigger, something bolder—an outdoor living space that reflected their lifestyle. They wanted a space that could evolve with them: a place for hosting friends, enjoying

al fresco meals, practicing yoga and soaking in the sweeping valley views. Frith rose to the challenge, transforming the modest deck into an expansive, three-tiered, 2,000-square foot outdoor haven that doubled the previous deck’s footprint. Every tier was framed with Fortress® framing.
Steel’s proven strength made the client’s vision possible. With a yield strength that is 10x greater than wood, steel deck framing can support heavy loads with ease. In turn, steel profiles can span longer distances between supports. In fact, Fortress offers engineered steel deck beams that can span as long as 20 feet between supports. Capitalizing on this capability, Frith built a new deck structure that stretches 16 feet out and away from the house. This helped him create more usable space at every level of the deck. The upper deck is a hub for barbecues and social gatherings, the middle tier is a private wellness zone for yoga and meditation, and the lower deck is a serene retreat with a hot tub, outdoor shower and a quiet corner for stretching or latenight stargazing.
Frith’s crew finished the expansive, three-tiered masterpiece in Portola Valley in under 10 weeks, a testament to both the efficiency of working with Fortress’s framing system and the evolution of Mountain Deck itself. Frith says a big part of that efficiency comes from the fact that Evolution is not just a stronger solution, but also a comprehensive, ready-to-assemble system. Designed to support a straightforward installation, Evolution’s intuitive interlocking
joist and ledger system means crews can build a deck with less effort. No additional tools or special industry knowledge are required. The deck framing system also comes with a rim joist, midspan blocking, beam blocking and pre-punched ledgers at 12-inch and 16-inch on center. It’s also worth noting that typically, no two pressure-treated wood boards are the same; they are either curved or crowned and need to be shaved or planed before installation. But every steel profile in the Evolution steel deck framing system is precisely engineered. It arrives to the job site straight, installs straight and stays straight.
“With Evolution, my crew is not spending time fixing deck members. They just open the package and start assembling,” Frith adds. With that kind of efficiency, Mountain Deck has been able to cut installation time and labor costs by roughly a third. Joining the list of contractors who argue that building a steel frame deck is actually easier, Frith says, “Putting a deck together doesn’t get any easier than that.”
Beyond the aesthetics, performance benefits and jobsite efficiencies, what matters the most to Frith and his clients is fire safety. Having lived and worked in California’s wildfire-prone regions for years, the seasoned deck builder has seen the devastation fires can cause firsthand. He’s experienced evacuations and has had to watch friends and loved ones suffer significant losses.
“Burning embers are one of the leading ways wildfire spreads,” he explains. “They can travel for miles and eventually settle on a structure when the air currents die down. If that structure is an
old, dried-out wooden deck bolted to a home, it is basically like having a bonfire fastened to your house.”
To better protect life and property, many governing agencies have adopted WildlandUrban Interface (WUI) and NFPA 1144 building codes for fire safety. California also enforces Chapter 7A, Materials and Construction Methods for Exterior Wildfire Exposure. These codes require that any structure attached to a home be built with ignition-resistant, noncombustible building materials within the first five feet of the house—a zone known as the defensible space. This space acts as a barrier to slow or stop the spread of fire and provide firefighters with safer access to a property. “There’s no better material for that defensible space than steel,” Frith asserts. Steel is inherently noncombustible, ignition-resistant and fireresistant. Underscoring its safety factor, Evolution received a Class-A fire-resistant rating after completing the ASTM E84-21a, Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials. This designation means homeowners investing in Evolution steel deck framing can meet WUI building codes, NFPA 1144 codes and the strict California Chapter 7A requirements. Evolution was also recently added to the California Fire Safe Council's Fire Safe Vendor List, which is one more reason to trust the deck framing system in states with high wildfire risk.

The company's latest innovation gives contractors a purpose-built solution to meet demand for fire-safe, personalized outdoor living spaces
Fortress Building Products, a constantly evolving outdoor building products manufacturer, adds the Evolution Tile Deck Tray to its line-up of proven steel solutions. Designed for use with the Evolution steel deck framing system, the tray creates a reliable surface to install tile pavers across a deck. The company's latest innovation is available across Fortress Building Products' North American dealer network to help contractors deliver fire-safe, personalized outdoor living spaces that are built strong from the ground up.
A purpose-built deck building solution, a 4' x 6" tile deck tray can be installed on top of Evolution steel deck joists. This creates a smooth and flat surface that makes the process of installing tile pavers, or a creative combination of tiles and deck boards, quick and easy. The versatile steel tray works with any exterior tile and other

framing materials, including wood. In turn, contractors are empowered to offer homeowners different design options and build a statementmaking outdoor space that stands out in the neighborhood.
The design of the new Fortress® steel component provides fall-through protection and proper water drainage while creating an even surface for tile installations. Most importantly, it leverages the proven performance of steel. The durable tile deck tray will not rot, warp, split or deteriorate after long-term exposure to moisture, ensuring a structurally sound deck that lasts. In application, the steel tray will lay flat and stay flat. Noncombustible steel is also a Class A fire-rated building material, which means contractors who use the tile deck tray can complete fire-safe projects in regions that are prone to wildfires (including WUI zones) or densely populated urban areas where fire can spread rapidly between structures. Like the Evolution steel deck framing system it's designed to complement, the new tile deck tray is backed by a 25-year limited
manufacturer warranty for ultimate peace of mind.
"Fortress Building Products is committed to driving the adoption and usage of stronger, smarter deck building methods and products," says Jeff Schulz, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Fortress Building Products. "Adding the Evolution Tile Deck Tray to our line-up of steel solutions is one more way we're putting that commitment into action. It's a versatile product that helps contractors work more efficiently and effectively to deliver a longer-lasting outdoor space that brings their clients' creative design vision to life."

Landscaping keeps lawns protected, healthy and looking great. Whether it’s a full landscaping project or just adding a sprinkler system, there are tools that can help speed up the work.
Joe Haynes, president of Little Beaver, shares insight into how mechanical earth drills and minitrenchers can help landscaping projects go quickly and smoothly.
Mechanical earth drills cut down on the time spent digging holes. When planting trees or shrubs, installing mailboxes or fence posts, using an earth drill significantly speeds up the process while creating consistent holes that meet the project’s size requirements.
Haynes advises looking for mechanical earth drills that combine a compact, lightweight design with additional safety features to allow safe and efficient one-man operation. Some drills feature a torque tube, which reroutes kickback from the drill away from the operator, making these drills one of the safest options for single person operation.
Traditionally, landscapers have used shovels and other gardening tools to break up soil to dig trenches for edging or underground wiring or sprinkler lines. This process is time-consuming and physically grueling.
Haynes says that’s why mini-trenchers exist. “Look for mini-trenchers that feature a simple, push-forward design for easy operation and enhanced operator safety compared to competitive pull back models.” Some mini-trenchers can cut trenches up to 12 inches deep and 4 inches wide, neatly depositing the soil on one side of the trench to make backfill quick and easy.
When installing underground wiring or sprinklers, a portion of the line might need to run underneath a driveway or sidewalk. Haynes says a reliable, safe equipment option is needed to easily bore underneath the concrete or asphalt. Some manufacturers offer horizontal boring kits that attach to mechanical earth drills, providing both dry and wet boring opportunities. Once connected to a drill, the horizontal boring kits can bore underneath a standard sidewalk, driveway or parking lot.
Little Beaver has been proudly manufacturing quality, safe and productive drilling equipment for three generations. With a full line of easy-to-operate equipment, along with a complete offering of accessories, including augers, extensions, points and blades, Little Beaver effectively serves the needs of end-users from professional contractors to rental centers.

With a focus on performance and design, the brand delivers dependable, visually appealing solutions that balance aesthetics with structural integrity on every project. “Every product is thoughtfully engineered to ensure efficient installation and long-term performance, providing contractors with reliable results from start to finish,” says Dawn Phillips, senior product manager, Decking, Railing & Outdoor Structures.
Available in rust-resistant aluminum and corrosion-resistant steel, RailMaster meets a variety of market needs, budgets and environmental conditions.
RailMaster Aluminum Railing features AAMA 2605 grade textured black and newly introduced textured white powder coatings, providing exceptional durability and weather resistance. Its lightweight, aluminum construction allows for a sleek, modern profile while delivering the low-maintenance, durable performance contractors value.
RailMaster Steel Railing is constructed from pre-galvanized, heavygauge steel and finished with a zinc-rich, matte black powder coating. This combination delivers exceptional strength, long-term durability, and a timeless appearance, making it ideal for residential and commercial projects.
Designed for professional contractors, both RailMaster Aluminum and RailMaster Steel offer pre-assembled level and stair rail panels along with pre-bracketed line, end, and corner plated posts for quick installation, helping contractors save time and money. For added
flexibility without sacrificing quality, RailMaster Aluminum Railing is also available in easy-to-assemble knock-down kits.
Building on this strong foundation, Phillips says recent RailMaster Aluminum Railing product launches further reduce installation time and enhance adaptability across diverse jobsite conditions. Among the new additions are 6-foot and 8-foot pre-assembled stair panels, pre-bracketed corner and end posts, and taller pre-bracketed line posts available in 39-inch and 45-inch sizes, offering more options for projects with varying deck heights or guardrail requirements. For jobs requiring custom bracket placement, matching blank taller posts are also offered.
RailMaster has also added a continuous rail option with low profile caps for line, end and corner posts. “These components create a smooth, seamless rail appearance while maintaining the structural integrity that aluminum railing systems demand,” explains Phillips.
Complementing these recent RailMaster Aluminum Railing innovations, the brand has also expanded its aesthetic options with a textured white finish, offering contractors a stylish and practical color alternative ideal for coastal applications.
With these latest product additions, Phillips says RailMaster remains dedicated to simplifying installation and empowering contractors to confidently expand their business, tackle new challenges, and stand out in a competitive market. “Our goal is to make it easier for contractors to expand their services and take on any railing project with confidence.”
Collectively, these product additions are designed to reduce jobsite complexity and provide contractors with greater flexibility for residential, multi-family, and commercial railing projects.

Diamond Mowers ushered in a new era of land management performance and proficiency last month with a comprehensive showcase of equipment, attachments, and wear parts designed for real-world performance. Headlined by the launch of the new DM360™ platform and supported by a broad lineup of cutting-edge attachment innovations, the company’s CONEXPO-CON/AGG exhibit demonstrated how Diamond is redefining productivity, safety and versatility across municipal and professional land maintenance applications.
“CONEXPO is where professionals come to see solutions that can truly move the needle on productivity,” says Wayne Baumberger, president and CEO of Diamond Mowers. “With the launch of our DM360 platform and the attachment innovations we showcased alongside it, we’re giving crews smarter, more versatile ways to tackle multiple applications and simply do more with one machine.”
DM360™ and DM360X™ – One Platform, Many Jobs
New for 2026, the DM360 is a multifunction machine that provides a true “one machine, many jobs” approach for roadside, right-of-way, and municipal maintenance. Its signature rotating cab and boom deliver a 360-degree operational advantage, offering improved sightlines and positioning across demanding applications. Advanced features such as joystick steering, all-wheel steer and industry-leading left-hand mowing capabilities help crews work safely and efficiently.
For operators seeking even more versatility, the DM360X™ adds a universal skid-steer plate and lower hydraulic system to accommodate additional attachments, expanding seasonal and multi-task capabilities. At the show, the DM360X was paired with a 50" Boom Rotary Mower and a 72” Drum Mulcher OD Pro X2 to demonstrate how one platform can handle multiple high-demand tasks.
“We built the DM360 to solve real challenges our customers face every day: visibility, safety, uptime and versatility,” explains Baumberger. “This platform sets a new benchmark for what a multifunction machine can deliver and represents a major leap forward in how municipalities can think about roadside mowing.”
Diamond Mowers’ CONEXPO display also featured a selection of the company’s industry-leading mowing and mulching attachments, including:
Boom Flail Mower: Provides clean, consistent cuts with improved containment along roadsides, ditches, and medians, making it perfect for high-visibility environments.
Boom Rotary Mower: Built for fast, efficient mowing of grass, brush, and light vegetation across shoulders, embankments, and long rights-of-way.
Disc Mulcher BD Pro X: High-torque, high-volume mulching for dense material, with adaptive disc speeds for maximum productivity.
Drum Mulcher DC Pro: Delivers fast spool-up, powerful mulching, and improved visibility in a lighter, more maneuverable package for loaders up to 75hp.
Drum Mulcher OD Pro X2: Combines durable construction and versatile tooth configurations to maximize cutting performance, efficiency, and cost control in demanding terrain.
Diamond’s lineup of wear parts was also on display, including mulching teeth, blades, polycarbonate protection solutions, and more, all engineered to extend machine life and help crews maintain productivity in demanding conditions.
“Our strength isn’t just in one machine or one attachment; it’s in the depth of our portfolio,” Baumberger adds. “From the new DM360 and our high-performance attachments to the wear parts that keep crews running day after day, everything we build is designed to work together and deliver reliable performance in demanding land management environments.”
Baumberger says Diamond Mowers designs equipment to endure harsh conditions and long working seasons, ensuring downtime doesn’t cut into productivity. By actively listening to operators and dealers, the company continuously refines its platforms, attachments, and wear parts, delivering solutions that help professionals take on more work, expand capabilities, and achieve dependable results across a range of land management applications.

Backed by a 35-year Limited Residential Warranty and a 10-year Limited Commercial Warranty, Trex Select delivers premium design, advanced performance and long-term durability, proving that exceptional innovation doesn’t have to come at a premium price.
Trex Signature® X-Series™ Railing
Trex also earned international acclaim with a GOOD DESIGN Award in the Building/Architecture Materials category for its Trex Signature X-Series Frameless Glass and Cable Railing. Founded in 1950 by former MoMA curator Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., together with such pioneers in modern design as Charles and Ray Eames, Russel Wright and George Nelson, the Good Design Awards honor outstanding achievement in design excellence, celebrating products that set global benchmarks for innovation, aesthetics and functional performance. The esteemed jury recognized Trex Signature X-Series Railing for reimagining cable and frameless glass systems through a lens of modern minimalism while dramatically simplifying installation for the trades.

At the heart of the award-winning system is the X-Series Post, a versatile, modular solution engineered to support stainless-steel cable or frameless glass infills, as well as future system expansions. Designed to function seamlessly as an end, line or corner post, it reduces SKU complexity for dealers and distributors while delivering maximum flexibility and efficiency for installers.
The system also features installer-driven innovations such as springloaded cables for improved tension management, push-to-connect fittings that eliminate swaging and crimping, and swivel-capable ball ends that adapt easily to stair angles and horizontal runs. Powder-coated aluminum frames and corrosion-resistant stainless-steel hardware ensure durability, even in demanding marine and coastal environments. A 50-year Limited Residential Warranty underscores its lasting performance and value as a design-forward investment.
“At Trex, innovation has always been about more than what’s new – it’s about what’s better,” adds Lee. “These awards reinforce our commitment to delivering thoughtfully engineered products that solve real challenges while elevating the outdoor living experience.”

For fence and deck contractors, most revenue traditionally comes from new installations. But every project completed in the past also represents untapped opportunity. Millions of 4-inch and 5-inch fence and deck posts have already been installed in backyards across North America, creating a massive installed base that contractors can revisit with new accessory products.
One example is BuzzCaps Mosquito-Blocking Torch Post Caps, which allow contractors to reconnect with past customers by offering a simple retrofit that transforms standard fence posts into mosquitorepelling torch holders. Because BuzzCaps install easily on existing posts, contractors can generate additional revenue not only from future builds but also from fences and decks they installed years earlier.
One contractor recently tested this approach by reaching out to past customers with a simple message: a new accessory was available that could turn their existing fence posts into outdoor lighting with builtin mosquito protection. The response was immediate. Homeowners appreciated the chance to upgrade a structure they already owned, and installations took only minutes. What began as a small experiment quickly demonstrated how accessory products can unlock value from a contractor’s own customer list.
“Contractors already have a huge installed base of fence and deck posts in their communities,” says John Pierson with BuzzCaps. “Our goal was to create a product that allows them to go back to those customers with a quick, simple upgrade that adds both ambiance and mosquito protection to their outdoor spaces.”
As outdoor living continues to grow in popularity, homeowners are looking for ways to make their decks and backyards more comfortable and inviting. By offering post-cap upgrades like BuzzCaps as an add-on during new installation, or as a retrofit for existing fences, contractors can create a new revenue stream while strengthening long-term customer relationships. Instead of a one-time transaction, every fence becomes an opportunity for future upgrades that enhance both the outdoor space and the contractor’s business.

For many homeowners, the backyard is no longer just a patch of grass or a place for the occasional barbecue. It has become a true extension of the home, a space for entertaining, relaxing and enjoying the outdoors in comfort. As a result, people are approaching outdoor design differently.
“One of the biggest shifts we’re seeing at PERGOLUX is that homeowners want their outdoor space to function as another room of the house,” says Tim Heneveld, country director for PERGOLUX North America. “Instead of thinking about their backyard as seasonal, they are designing spaces they can enjoy year-round.”
Creating a usable outdoor environment requires more than adding patio furniture. Homeowners are increasingly incorporating structures that provide shade and protection from the elements while still maintaining an open, inviting feel. PERGOLUX is the leading provider of louvered pergola kits in the US, and Heneveld explains that pergolas have become a popular solution because they create a defined outdoor room while preserving the connection to the outdoors.
Traditional pergolas typically featured fixed slats that allowed sunlight to filter through. Today’s designs have evolved to offer more functionality. Adjustable louvered roofs, for example, allow homeowners to control sunlight and airflow throughout the day while also providing protection from rain. That flexibility makes a significant difference in how often

people actually use their outdoor spaces.
Like the interior of the home, outdoor spaces are also being designed for multiple uses. A pergola may cover a dining area, provide shade near a pool or create a comfortable lounge space for reading and conversation. The goal is to make the backyard adaptable for both everyday use and larger gatherings.
“We always encourage people to think first about how they want to use the space,” says Heneveld. “Do they want a quiet place to relax, a spot for family dinners or a space for entertaining friends? Once you understand how the space will be used, the design decisions become much clearer.”
Durability is also a critical consideration when designing outdoor structures. Pergolas must withstand changing weather conditions, from intense sun to storms. Many modern systems are built using powdercoated aluminum or other weather-resistant materials designed to handle coastal winds, snow loads and long-term exposure to the elements.
Design trends have also been influenced by Scandinavian architecture, which emphasizes clean lines, simplicity and practical functionality. These design principles allow outdoor structures to complement a wide range of home styles while maintaining the strength required for harsh climates.

Spring has always been the season when the fence industry comes alive. As the weather breaks and homeowners start getting out and thinking about their yards again, fence contractors across the country begin gearing up for their busiest months of the year. But in recent years, something interesting has been happening in our industry. Customers are not just asking for fences anymore.
They are asking about pergolas. Deck railings. Privacy screens. Decorative panels. Outdoor structures that turn a backyard into something closer to a resort-style living space. In other words, the conversation is shifting from simply defining the property line to defining the outdoor lifestyle.
And in my opinion, that shift represents one of the biggest opportunities the fence industry has seen in decades.
THE BACKYARD HAS BECOME ANOTHER ROOM
If you step back and look at broader housing trends, it is easy to see what is driving this change. Homeowners are investing in their outdoor spaces like never before. What used to be considered a backyard is now often treated as an extension of the home itself.
Outdoor kitchens, shaded seating areas, decks, patios, and fire pits have become common features. The expectation is no longer just privacy or security, it is creating an environment where people can relax, entertain, and enjoy their property. To me known as the Backyard Experience!
The fence still plays an important role in that environment, but it is rarely the only element. For fence contractors, that raises an important question:
Are we simply installing fences, or are we helping build outdoor living spaces?
The answer to that question may determine where your company is five or ten years from now.
One of the reasons I believe diversification into outdoor living products makes so much sense
for fence contractors is because many of the core skills already exist within our industry.
Fence contractors understand layout, grading, structural posts, concrete work, material handling, and outdoor construction. Those skills translate directly into a wide range of outdoor products.
Installing a pergola, for example, is not a huge leap for a contractor who has spent years setting posts and building wood structures. Installing railing systems often uses the same types of materials and fasteners that fence crews already work with every day.
In many ways, fence contractors are uniquely positioned to expand into these products because we already operate in the outdoor construction space.
The challenge is not capability.
The challenge is mindset.
For decades, the fence industry has tended to stay inside its own lane. Contractors focus on wood fence, chain link, ornamental iron, vinyl, and maybe gate automation.
Meanwhile, other trades have moved into the outdoor living market—deck builders, landscape contractors, patio installers, and specialty outdoor structure companies.
But if you really think about it, many of those projects start with the same basic elements we deal with every day: posts, structure, layout, materials, and installation crews that understand outdoor construction.
Yet many fence contractors still stop at the fence line.
In my opinion, they are leaving opportunity on the table.
One of the most important advantages of diversifying your product offerings is the ability to increase the value of each project.
Instead of installing a fence and walking away, contractors can provide additional elements that complement the overall outdoor design.
A backyard project might include fencing, decorative privacy panels, a pergola over a patio area, and railing around a deck or steps. When a contractor can provide multiple components of that project, the job value increases dramatically. It also strengthens the relationship with the customer.
Instead of being viewed as just the fence installer, the contractor becomes part of the broader outdoor living solution.
That kind of positioning can lead to repeat work, referrals, and larger projects in the future.
Diversification does not mean you have to become a full-service outdoor construction company overnight. In fact, the most successful contractors usually start by adding products that naturally complement fencing.
Several categories tend to be good entry points.
Railing systems are one of the easiest expansions. Aluminum railing, cable railing, and composite systems are widely used around decks, porches, and stairs. Many fence contractors already work with similar materials, making the learning curve relatively manageable.
Pergolas and shade structures are another fast-growing segment. With the availability of engineered kits and prefabricated systems, installation has become far more accessible than it was years ago.
Decorative privacy screens and architectural panels are also becoming increasingly popular. These products are often used to create visual separation around patios, pools, and outdoor seating areas.
And of course, gate automation and access control continue to evolve, offering another opportunity for contractors to expand their services into technology-driven outdoor solutions.
The key is choosing products that fit your existing skill set and crew capabilities.

One piece of advice I often give contractors who are considering diversification is simple: start small.
You don’t need to introduce five new product lines all at once. In fact, doing too much too quickly can create operational headaches, training issues, and unnecessary risk.
Instead, start with one or two complementary products and focus on learning the installation process, understanding the suppliers, and training your crews properly.
Once you gain confidence in those systems, expansion becomes much easier.
You may also find that your customers begin asking for additional services once they see what your company offers.
Often, the market itself will guide your next step.
Adding new products is only part of diversification. The other part is how your company presents itself to the marketplace.
If your website, trucks, and advertising only talk about fencing, that’s how customers will view your business.
But if your brand messaging begins to include outdoor living solutions— pergolas, railing systems, privacy structures, and backyard design elements, you will start attracting a different type of project.
You are no longer just selling a fence.
You are helping customers create an outdoor experience.
And in today’s market, that shift in perception can make a significant difference.
Having spent five decades in the fence industry, I have watched it evolve in ways many people never expected.
We have seen the rise of vinyl fencing, composite materials, aluminum ornamental systems, and highly sophisticated gate automation. Each of those innovations changed the way contractors operate and opened new opportunities for those willing to adapt.
Outdoor living is simply the next phase of that evolution.
The companies that embrace it will discover new revenue streams, stronger customer relationships, and more resilient businesses. Some of my closest fence friends have adapted to this evolution of change and they are doing tremendously well.
The companies that resist it may eventually find themselves competing in an increasingly narrow slice of the market.
At the end of the day, the fence will always remain a core part of our industry. Property boundaries, security, and privacy are not going away anytime soon.
But the modern homeowner is thinking about their outdoor space in a much broader way.
They want environments, not just enclosures.
For fence contractors willing to expand their perspective, that shift opens the door to tremendous opportunity.
Sometimes the best way to grow your fence business…is simply to look beyond the fence

This month, Fence News is featuring a special section on Outdoor Living. Many contractors diversify their offerings to include products beyond fence, to include the installation of pergolas, decks and railings. I am focusing today on railings, specifically what you need to properly prepare for railings in commercial markets.
Adding stair and hand railing to your residential offerings is relatively easy. You need to meet local code, which often includes height requirements (don’t forget about measuring from tread nose for stairs), picket spacing, and load requirements. Most manufacturers know the requirements for railing and using fence panels for railing applications. If they don’t, find one that does!
If you have not done much railing, your first step is understanding the difference between a handrail and a guard rail. Handrails are intended to provide support for pedestrians to grasp with their hands and used for guidance and support while navigating up, down or across an area. Guard rails are intended to prevent falling and function as lifesaving device designed specifically for safety. Some key items to understand:
1) A fence panel, though it may meet strength requirements for a handrail, cannot be a handrail without a continuous rail. The fence posts sticking up above the top rail is the challenge.
2) Fence panels can be a guardrail, but only if they meet the fall protection load requirements and are installed to the tested parameters. For example, you can put fence across the top of a retaining wall, provided the unit meets ICC code and is installed in the way it was engineered and tested for this purpose.
3) Do not use any fence panels for railing unless you consult with the manufacturer first.
4) Never use a spear top or any panel with a protrusion above the top rail for any railing application.
As you enter the commercial and industrial markets, the requirements for safety increase significantly. Concentrated loads, deflection limits and proper anchoring are all much stricter and more robust with commercial applications. Make sure you and your manufacturer understand those requirements. You can – and should – take the time to identify railing manufacturers that have had their products tested and do in-house continuous testing throughout the manufacturing process. Find a manufacturer that owns or regularly tests with a quality dynamometer. A dynamometer is a precision tool used to measure force, torque, and power.
Railing for commercial and industrial applications can be very lucrative, and a solid compliment to your current fence offerings. Just be sure you have a clear understanding of the purpose and function of the railing you install, understand and meet the code requirements for the specific product and installation, and partner with exceptional manufacturers. These are some simple steps for finding success as you grow your business beyond the fence line.

FENCE NEWS IS A PROUD MEMBER OF THESE

IS A PROUD TO PARTNER WITH:

The Richison family has been in the fence industry for three generations. Brett is the owner and founder of FenceTrac; his dad Cliff owns Arrow Fence Company and his grandfather Bob owned Empire Fence in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Empire Fence remains in the family, now owned by Brett’s cousin Nathan Nelson.
Each of the companies started as small operations supported by family, and now have all grown to leaders in the fence industry trusted by commercial and residential partners.
Bob started his business in 1955 as a small backyard enterprise. He successfully built his brand into a small business and after Nathan joined the team in 1998, the two led Empire Fence to become the leader in residential fencing. Cliff was around 10 years old when he first started working with Bob. “I started by going out
and bolting up tension bands for the crews for the next day,” he says.
At 21, Cliff branched out on his own with Arrow Fence. Later he partnered with long-time friend Duane Voss to offer StainTrac worldwide.
“Each of our family companies has been a chain reaction from the one before it. My dad worked for his dad and then branched out on his own like many people do,” says Brett. “Throughout my childhood I worked with my dad, helping crews with anything I was capable of and then, right out of high school, joined full time. Then, around 2011, my dad approached me about developing a system to add stability and longevity to wood fences.”
That conversation turned into a sequence of testing out various fence materials with a steel frame system they designed. Immediately, Brett
and Cliff realized their idea was practical and would change the way the industry viewed privacy fences.
“We figured out the product, but at the time, we were in the installation business. We didn’t know anything about manufacturing. We got lots of advice and guidance from friends in the industry that helped us figure out the way forward.”
Innovation is part of the family business. From materials to technology, Empire Fence, Arrow Fence and FenceTrac are staying ahead of the curve and charting new paths in the fence industry.

PRESIDENT & CEO, MASTER HALCO

Leadership transitions often mark important turning points for companies, especially in industries built on long-standing relationships and trust. At Master Halco, those relationships run deep across the contractor and supplier community. As Glenn Shenk assumes the role of President and CEO, he brings with him a strong track record of leadership and a vision focused on strengthening partnerships, expanding capabilities and supporting the contractors who drive the industry forward. Fence News had the opportunity to visit with Glenn as he begins this new chapter.
What was your background before joining Master Halco, and what led you to this company?
I started my career in sales and leadership in my early 20s at RadioShack near Los Angeles, first as a salesperson and then as a store manager. The company provided great training in sales, leadership and store operations. After a couple of years as a store manager, a customer, who was an executive at Galls, encouraged me to join his company. Galls was a retailer serving police and fire professionals with uniforms and equipment, and it felt like a strong business with plenty of growth opportunity. In that role, I helped turn around underperforming stores, opened a new location, and built several strong teams, which gave me great experience leading people and improving operations.
In my final year at Galls, we hired a new Director of Stores, Gary Caster. He was a strong leader, and I learned a lot from him in the short time we worked together. Gary later joined Master Halco as a Regional around 2005, and we stayed in touch. In June 2006, an outside sales role opened in my area, and he encouraged me to apply. While I enjoyed Galls, Master Halco felt like the right next step; an opportunity to keep learning, grow professionally and move beyond the retail environment. Gary helped set up the interviews, and within a couple of weeks I was on board.
Was there anything in your background you feel prepared you for success in your career?
At Galls, outside sales reps called on me regularly for many of the products we carried, so I was constantly interacting with salespeople.
Over time, you could really see what separated the best reps from the rest: follow-through, responsiveness, and the ability to add value beyond the product. Experiencing those interactions from the customer’s side taught me what to do (and what not to do) in outside sales. That perspective helped me transition into my next role – an Outside Sales Associate at Master Halco, covering the Los Angeles territory.
You’ve been with Master Halco for 20 years, now moving into the top leadership position. Describe your journey to your current position of President/CEO.
My journey with Master Halco has been amazing. After about a year in outside sales, I moved into the Branch Manager role for our LA facility, which was in Fontana, California, at the time. I worked alongside an excellent team across both sales and operations, many of whom are still with the company today. That period taught me a lot about our industry, and we had a lot of success and fun building the business and hitting our goals.
After about five years as Branch Manager, I was promoted to Regional Manager for the West Coast, overseeing 10 branches and one manufacturing plant. That role helped me grow in new ways, leading leaders, managing from a distance and learning about manufacturing. It also gave me the chance to deepen relationships with our people, suppliers, and customers – something I’ve always valued.
The step-up from Branch Manager brought a broad set of new responsibilities, and it was an important part of my development.
In 2016, after nearly four years as Regional
Manager, I relocated to Master Halco’s headquarters in Dallas, Texas, to become Vice President of Operations, overseeing all branches across the company. This is where I broadened my view beyond the West Coast and started looking at the business through a more company-wide lens. This gave me the opportunity to lead higher impact initiatives and drive continuous improvement across the entire company.
As our operations team grew, I took on more responsibilities, eventually becoming VP of Sales & Operations. In 2022, my role expanded even further, and my title was updated to SVP of Sales & Operations. Having been in a vice president role for the past 10 years, it’s been really rewarding to look back and see how far we have come as a company and how much our people have grown in their careers here.
What I love about Master Halco is our people, our culture, and our commitment to supporting the communities where we live and serve. We work hard, support each other and take pride in delivering for our customers. A great example of this is Master Halco Gives Back. Since the inception of this program in 2020, it has been incredibly meaningful to give back to the communities our people and customers call home.
Over the course of your career, how has the fence supply and distribution landscape evolved?
The supply-and-demand balance has almost always been a challenge in fencing. Over the years, as the economy has become more global, supply options and competition have

continued to grow – often faster than demand. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing; it pushes businesses to think more strategically and improve, which is something we’ve seen happen across the industry as a whole.
What is most challenging about working in this industry, and what is the most rewarding?
One of the challenges of working in the fencing industry today is managing expectations in a world that keeps moving faster. Our industry still relies on large-scale manufacturing schedules, freight logistics and jobsite realities that can’t always move at the instant Amazon pace that consumers have come to expect.
What makes it rewarding, though, are the relationships. This is an industry built on loyalty, trust and hardworking people who take pride in what they do. Those connections – with colleagues, vendors, and customers – are what make it special.
As a leader, how do you foster a culture that balances performance, service, and long-term relationships?
For me, it starts with having great people in the right roles and giving them the tools and support they need to succeed. I try to set clear expectations, keep communication straightforward and remove roadblocks so teams can stay focused on performance, service and doing the right thing for customers. When you combine empowerment with accountability, you can deliver results while building long-term relationships.
Did you have a mentor in your career, and if so, what did you learn from them that still guide you today?
Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to have the support and guidance of many people – more than I could ever properly thank. Still, a few individuals stand out in particular:
My dad, who I’m named after, has always been my greatest influence. From him, I inherited my work ethic, ambition and determination to succeed. Thanks to his example – and maybe a bit of genetics – I tend to obsess about getting things done and achieving goals. He’s always encouraged me, offering advice as I navigated both my professional and personal life. His guidance has helped me stay motivated and thoughtful, and we even had a bit of friendly competition over who could reach higher in our careers. I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without his unwavering support and the values he instilled in me.
Over the past four years, our outgoing President & CEO, Tats Kimura, has been an incredible mentor. He encouraged me to get involved in projects beyond my usual responsibilities and challenged me to think more broadly. Tats generously shared his knowledge, helping me grow and prepare for the President & CEO role in ways I might not have otherwise experienced. I'm truly grateful for his guidance and support as I take on this new chapter. Thank you, Tats, for believing in me and helping me get ready for what’s next!
After decades in this industry, what continues to motivate you to stay active and engaged?
When I think about how many people and families across the U.S., Canada and beyond are supported – directly and indirectly – by Master Halco, it motivates me to keep building a stronger, better company. Whether they’re Master Halco employees, customers or suppliers, many people rely on Master Halco for all or part of their livelihood, and I take that responsibility seriously.
What advice would you give to young professionals entering the fence industry today?
Because people and property will always need protection, the fencing industry isn’t going anywhere. There’s real opportunity for everyone in the value chain to thrive, as long as they focus on delivering value to customers that goes beyond just the products themselves.
In addition to the financial opportunities, you can build a lot of strong relationships along the way. This industry is full of knowledgeable, approachable people, and there’s almost always someone willing to help you learn and grow – just like others did for me. Invest in relationships, stay curious and take pride in the work.
Looking to the future for Master Halco, what are you most excited about?
This industry is always evolving, and no two days are the same. I’ve seen that throughout my time with Master Halco, and I know my new role as President & CEO will be no different. I’m looking forward to the many opportunities and challenges ahead, even those we haven’t discovered yet.

Before the FENCETECH 2026 show floor opened, members of the American Fence Association (AFA) gave back to the Indianapolis community during Missions Day, a volunteer service initiative that brings fence industry professionals together to serve the host city through hands-on volunteer projects.
Missions Day gives FENCETECH attendees the opportunity to take part in a meaningful, hands-on service project during convention week. It’s a unique way to connect with fellow members, strengthen professional relationships, and put shared values into action beyond the show floor. This year, FENCETECH volunteers participated in two service efforts across Indianapolis:
• Volunteers served at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana, helping support families whose children are receiving medical care.
• Volunteers assisted at Gleaners Food Bank, sorting and preparing food supplies for distribution to families facing food insecurity.
Across the country, AFA chapters are encouraged to continually seek opportunities to serve their local communities. Missions Day mirrors that chapter-level commitment, reinforcing servant leadership as a core value of the association.
FENCETECH 2026 was held February 2–6 at the Indiana Convention Center and brought together professionals from across the fence, gate, and perimeter security industries for education, networking, and innovation.

by Michael Reed executive director, American Fence Association
Leaders don’t step into leadership roles because they want authority. They do it because they want to make a difference.
Recently I had the opportunity to spend time with a group of professionals from across the industry exploring this very idea. Contractors, manufacturers, sales leaders and operations managers gathered to learn from each other. Many of them had built successful reputations installing fence, managing projects, solving problems for customers, and figuring out how to get the job done. But as their responsibilities grew, so did a new challenge: leadership. Most had learned leadership through experience rather than formal training. That led us to an important question: What do leaders actually do to create impact?
To explore that question, we looked at the research of leadership scholars James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner, whose decades of study on effective leadership resulted in a framework known as the “Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership,” outlined in the book, The Leadership Challenge.
Their research proves that leadership is not defined by personality or position. It is defined by behaviors; the things leaders consistently do that shape the performance and culture of their organizations. Like tool skills, or driving a loaded trailer, these behaviors can be learned and practiced.
The first behavior is simple but powerful. Leaders model the way for others.
One contractor in the room shared an example from his company. He expects his crews to follow strict safety protocols on every job site. But when he visits a site, he makes sure he is wearing the same safety gear as everyone else.
“It would be pretty hard to enforce safety rules if I’m not following them myself,” he said.
Leaders establish credibility by demonstrating the standards they expect from others. When leaders show discipline, professionalism and accountability, people notice.
In many ways, culture begins with the behaviors leaders model.
During the discussion, another idea emerged that resonated strongly with the group, extreme ownership. Projects don’t always go perfectly. A delivery might be late. A gate system might need a call back to work correctly. A customer may be frustrated about timing or communication. In those moments, leaders set the tone for the entire organization.
The strongest leaders practice blameless problem solving. They take responsibility for the outcome and focus on solving the problem. When leaders
demonstrate that kind of accountability, it sends a clear message to the team: “We own the customer experience. We take responsibility for the work we deliver and the promises we make.”
Over time, that mindset becomes part of the culture. Crews take greater pride in their work. Employees communicate more openly with customers. Problems are solved faster. And the result is something every company strives for: customers who trust the organization and are willing to recommend it to others.
The second behavior focuses on helping people see where the organization is going.
A manufacturing leader in the class described how his company began investing heavily in automation. The transition required new training, new equipment and a shift in how employees thought about their work in the business.
“At first some people wondered why we were changing things,” he explained. “Once we started sharing where the industry was heading and how this positioned us for the future, people understood how their contributions fit into the bigger picture.”
When leaders communicate a clear direction, people begin to see their work as part of something larger. Vision transforms daily tasks into team progress.
Challenge the Process
The third leadership behavior focuses on improvement and innovation.
Struggling organizations can improve, and great organizations can get better. Efficiency, quality and a great customer experience can drive long-term success. Leaders who challenge the process constantly ask questions like:
How can we install more efficiently?
How can we reduce callbacks?
How can we improve the customer experience?
One participant described how his company changed the way installation crews were scheduled. By rethinking their workflow and adopting new project management and scheduling tools, they reduced delays and improved communication with customers.
The improvement didn’t come from maintaining the status quo. It came from someone willing to question how things had always been done. Progress often begins with the courage to try something different.
Enable Others to Act
As the discussion continued, a common theme began to emerge: leadership is never about one person doing everything. Instead, it is about building the capability of the entire team. This idea is captured in the fourth leadership behavior: enabling others to act.
One operations manager shared how he learned
this lesson early in his leadership journey.
“When I first moved into management, I thought I had to solve every problem myself,” he said. “Eventually I realized the company would never grow if I was the bottleneck.”
Instead, he began investing time in developing floor supervisors and delegating responsibility. Over time, the team became stronger and more capable. When leaders trust others and provide opportunities for growth, organizations become more resilient.
The final leadership behavior may be the most underestimated: Leaders encourage the heart.
Recognition and encouragement are powerful motivators, especially in an industry where the work is physically demanding and deadlines are constant. Several leaders in the class shared simple practices they use within their companies. One owner makes a point of recognizing employees who complete certification programs. Another highlights team achievements during Monday morning meetings.
These moments reinforce something important: people want to know that their work matters. When leaders acknowledge effort and celebrate progress, they strengthen commitment across the entire organization.
As the class came to a close, one idea stood out. None of these leadership behaviors require a special title or a certain role in the organization. They can be learned and practiced by any business owner, foreman, salesperson, or anyone who influences others. Leadership is not reserved for the corner office or the most expensive truck. It is practiced everyday decisions, conversations and actions. Leaders who want to make a difference don’t begin with authority. They begin with their behavior.
They model the way.
They inspire a shared vision.
They challenge the process.
They enable others to act.
And they encourage the heart.
One final lesson became obvious to everyone in the class. Lessons in leadership are learned in our families, by playing sports, and in the industry and community organizations we participate in. AFA is a great place to practice leadership. You can be a chapter volunteer, lead a committee or get involved in a special interest group. Getting involved is the first step in developing strong leadership behaviors.
Let’s make something great happen!
Jefferson Tools has expanded its popular Tundra® line-up with a new range of high-performance Impact Bit Sets, designed to deliver exceptional strength, precision and reliability across a wide variety of demanding applications. The new collection – comprising 32, 46, and 54-piece sets – combines Flex Shank Torsion Technology, S2 impact-grade steel and magnetic quick-change functionality to meet the needs of modern tradespeople working with impact drivers and high-torque tools.
Built with professional users in mind, the Tundra Impact Bit range has been carefully engineered for versatility across multiple sectors, including construction, electrical, agricultural, and automotive. Each set comes in a robust, interlocking case that keeps bits secure, clearly visible, and easily transportable, helping professionals stay organized wherever they work.
“These new Tundra Impact Bit Sets are the result of listening to our customers,” explains Darren Binns, national sales manager at Jefferson Tools. “We wanted to create a range that truly matches the needs of today’s tradespeople, not just strong bits, but smart organization, flexibility and performance that can stand up to the toughest torque applications.”
Manufactured from premium S2 impact steel, the bits are designed to absorb torque shocks and resist wear, delivering the durability demanded by professionals who rely on their tools day in and day out. The Flex Shank Torsion Zone reduces stress on both the bit and the fastener by flexing under heavy loads, improving torque transfer and extending bit life. This means users can work faster, apply more power and maintain precision even when driving through hard materials or corroded fixings.
Each set features a magnetic quick-lock bit holder for fast, secure bit changes – a small detail that makes a big difference on site or in the workshop. In fast-paced working environments, time spent switching bits

or searching for the right one can add up.
The range offers three configurations to suit different needs. The 32-piece set provides an ideal everyday toolkit for standard jobs, while the 46-piece and 54-piece options extend capability for more specialized or heavy-duty tasks. Each case includes an assortment of Phillips, Pozi, Torx, Hex, and Torq Security bits, along with magnetic accessories and adaptors. Importantly, all cases interlock with one another, forming a modular storage system that can be stacked and carried together.
“Every trade environment brings its own challenges,” says Binns. “The Tundra sets are built to meet them head-on; offering strength, precision and the reliability professionals count on.”
In practice, the Tundra Impact Bit range can help reduce downtime and improve fastening accuracy, both key factors for tradespeople who value consistency. Using lower-quality bits often leads to cam-out, slippage, or head damage – all of which can slow down progress and risk damaging materials or machinery. The precision-machined tips in the Tundra range ensure a tight, accurate fit that minimizes wear on both the bit and the fastener, saving money over time.
Storage and organization are equally important for professional users. Each set comes in a rugged clear-lid case that keeps bits visible and secure, protecting them from dust and debris. The interlocking design allows users to tailor their setup, whether they’re storing tools in a van, on a bench, or carrying them between sites.
“These are impact bits made to last,” concludes Binns. “They’re engineered for people who depend on their tools day in, day out—the professionals who don’t have time for compromise.”

by Mark Levin, CAE, CSP executive vice president, Chain Link
I have been writing columns for Fence News ever since it started publication six years ago. Of my more than 70 columns since then, this one is going to be both the easiest – and the hardest I have ever written.
It is going to be easy because I am writing about one of the most important and impactful people ever to have been associated with the fence industry, Barry Marrs
I know that there are probably going to be other references to Barry’s passing (in late February) in this edition of Fence News, and probably many other industry-related publications. Those articles will give you all the details about Barry’s time at Master Halco, and at Security Contractor Services, and at his other positions in the fence industry for more than half a century. I am sure those articles will also mention that he twice served as president of the Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute (CLFMI).
I first met Barry at a CLFMI meeting in Florida, a few years after I started as CLFMI’s Executive Vice President. At that time Barry was working for Master Halco. He was always continually active in CLFMI, right from that first meeting. He later volunteered to serve on committees and participated in all of the discussions and committee meetings. In addition, Barry made an impression on me because he always asked a lot of questions to our speakers at meetings. That meant he was paying attention, but it also meant he was smart enough not to take everything the speakers said as gospel. He had a knack for challenging speakers, which started some interesting and worthwhile discussions.
When Barry took over as the chair of our marketing committee, CLFMI was in the midst of a major effort to try to maintain chain link’s then-shrinking dominance in the residential market. He put in many hours helping organize a large direct-marketing effort, financed in part by a voluntary industry-wide fundraising effort. Both
the fundraising campaign and the marketing program were successful. CLFMI was poised to continue these marketing efforts when the world changed.
At CLFMI’s Annual Meeting, right after 9/11, Barry Marrs stood up and said that CLFMI (which then, as now, collectively represented the vast majority of chain link production in North America) had an obligation to help respond to the new world order. He advised that the Institute should begin doing everything it could to enhance chain link’s capabilities to assist in the security markets, especially in high security markets such as infrastructure and energy. It was obvious to me that his patriotism was overriding his business interests. It led to CLFMI shifting its resources away from the residential marketing program and into a major testing and research program. It also led to CLFMI meeting with major security entities, collaborating with them to develop standards and specifications which enhanced perimeter security.
Telling you about Barry’s impact on the fence industry is the easy part. Barry may be gone, but his legacy in the fence industry will be everlasting.
The hard part is telling you about my friend, Barry Marrs.
It is difficult to describe how close we became over the past 40 years. I, of course, worked with him closely during his time as CLFMI president. But even before those times, and certainly after, Barry and I talked constantly. I often called to ask for advice, or information, or to get him to make some calls for me in the industry. He called me to bounce ideas off of me, and many of his calls included, “What if?” or “Have we ever thought about?” By the way, he never hesitated to challenge me, either, with a more than few, “Why are you doing...?” He, his wife Karen, and I shared a special bond. We talked about many, many things that had nothing to do with work. That is

what friends do.
In 2020 I was selected as an inductee into the American Fence Association Hall of Fame (largely, I am told, due to Barry’s efforts). There was no FenceTech in 2021 due to covid, so I was scheduled to be inducted at FenceTech 2022 in New Orleans. The night of the induction/awards ceremony was on the second day of the show. I went to the pre-meeting reception, and Barry and Karen Marrs came in. We shared hugs and congratulations, and I asked, “How is the show going for you guys?”
Barry said, “We just got into town a couple of hours ago. We just had time to get checked into the hotel and get dressed for this evening.”
I said, “Well, okay. Maybe we can catch up tomorrow before the show opens.” Barry said, “We’ve got an early flight back tomorrow morning.”
I said, “I don’t understand. You just got here and you are turning around and flying back to California early tomorrow morning? Why did you come all the way to New Orleans?”
Barry said, “We just wanted to be here with you when you went into the AFA Hall of Fame.”
That was the kind of a friend, and the kind of person, Barry Marrs was.

Standard Paints, Inc. has launched Wood Defender® 200 Series Aerosol Stain & Seal, a precision spray format that delivers the brand’s proven oil-based stain and seal formula without the setup, cleanup, or tip failures contractors and dealers have come to expect from conventional aerosol stains.
The new aerosol was built specifically for punch-list items: cut ends, gates, hardware areas, and small repairs where hauling a sprayer isn’t practical. Because it matches Wood Defender’s Fence Stain & Seal and 200 Series liquid stain colors, contractors can maintain color continuity from large-scale applications through final touchups using the same formula they already trust.
“Contractors don’t want to set up a sprayer or crack open a gallon just to hit a cut end or a gate,” says Laurel McEuen, director of marketing. “The 200 Series Aerosol gives them the same formula, same color, and same guarantee in a format that’s ready the second they reach for it.”
The aerosol is engineered to fully dispense its contents, addressing the clogging and tip failures that make conventional aerosol stains unreliable on the job site. Self-leveling application ensures even coverage without brush marks or lap lines, just like liquid stain.
Beyond professional contractors, the product is well-suited for dealers and retailers serving DIY customers tackling gates, small repairs, and accent work. Sold in cases of 12, it complements existing 5- gallon and gallon programs without cannibalizing them, and functions as a strong add-on for pre-stain packages and contractor counter sales.
The can also doubles as a practical leave-behind for contractors. With a business card or custom label applied, it keeps the contractor’s name in front of the homeowner long after the job is done and puts a touchup solution in their hands for gates, repairs, and small projects between service calls.
The initial launch includes two best-selling colors, Transparent Oxford Brown (200304-SC) and Semi- Transparent Coffee Brown (200410-SC), in 12 oz (340g) cans.
Additional colors will be added as demand grows. Like all 200 Series Wood Defender products, the aerosol carries the brand’s two-year guarantee.
Wood Defender 200 Series Aerosol Stain & Seal is available now through Wood Defender distributors, dealers, and select retail partners. Dealers interested in adding the SKU can contact their Wood Defender representative or reach the team at 800-658-KOTE.

With over six decades of fencing experience, Mr. L.H. “Butch” Glasgow was born on May 2, 1941, in Buffalo, New York. Butch moved to Orlando in 1961 and then to Bradenton, Florida, in 1964 with just $300 in his pocket and a determination to build a better life.
In the words of Butch's eldest son, Shannon Glasgow, president of USA Fence:
“My father, Butch Glasgow, has been in the fence industry for 62 years. He started working on a crew with his father-in-law, my grandfather CR Bentley of America Fence and now, three generations later, we have grown from three employees to six branches, serving the entire state of Florida. The slogan on every vehicle we have is 'We Have Pride.' Pride. That is the word that best describes Butch and the commitment he brought to the fence industry and to business. Locally, he has brought in attorneys, bankers, and other businessmen to the Florida Chapter of the IFIA and the South Florida Chapter of the AFA meetings to expose other members of the fence industry to better business practices, encouraging them to find success and make smarter choices. He believed an educated and smart competitor is always good for the industry.

December 21, 1944 – February 2, 2026
Butch received his 35-year plaque in 2009 from the American Fence Association (AFA) and his lifetime achievement award in 2015, and had been a continued member for well over 40 years.
Butch expanded his business ventures to include real estate, cars, and many other ventures, but the fence industry was always at the core of what he did and what he loved. His competency in fencing was his greatest strength, and I believe there is no one who will work harder to succeed in this industry than my dad. Even at 80-plus years old, he took no days off, supporting his business and the industry that gave him his start. There is no one more deserving for the Hall of Fame Award from the American Fence Association than Butch Glasgow.”
Both of Butch’s sons and a grandson had the opportunity to work with him every day and serve the needs of the west central Florida fence market.
Butch exemplified pride, hard work, and a commitment to excellence. His vision and leadership created a foundation of values that continue to guide his family and businesses across four generations.
Butch’s favorite saying was something he lived by: “Once a job has begun, never leave it until it’s done, be the labor great or small, do it well or not at all.”
The outstanding work of Mr. LH. (Butch) Glasgow will always be remembered.
William Forster passed away peacefully on Monday, February 2. Bill began his professional career as a sales manager for Star Band Company where he built lasting relationships with buyers from major retail chains nationwide. In 1984, he founded Forster Fence Solutions offering a variety of products with a focus on powder-coated aluminum and steel products. Bill was among the most innovative aluminum and steel fence importers, and by the end of 2018, Forster Fence was one of the largest steel fencing importers in the United States.

August 27, 1962 – February 21, 2026

Ernie Casserly passed away unexpectedly at age 57. He worked for Thomas Fence Company in Rochester, New York. Ernie will be remembered for his gift of connection and the way he brought energy, light, and humor to every conversation.
Matthew Way of Clearwater, Florida, passed away on February 21, he was 63. Matt graduated from Hanover High School in 1980 and later attended the University of New Hampshire. He built a prominent career in the fencing industry, with his last role as the Manager of Eagle Fence Distributing, Tampa, Florida. Matt led the Tampa Clearwater operation with pride. He is remembered as an industry icon who served with integrity.

In today’s competitive labor market, much of the conversation in almost every industry – including fencing and related business sectors – centers around recruiting. Contractors are constantly looking for ways to attract installers, salespeople and production staff in an environment where skilled labor is increasingly difficult to find.
But while recruiting often gets the spotlight, many successful companies are discovering that the real key to building a strong team isn’t simply bringing in new people. It’s keeping the great employees they already have.
Retention may not be as flashy as recruiting campaigns or signing bonuses, but it is one of the most effective strategies a company can invest in. Every experienced installer or crew leader who stays with your company represents years of knowledge, productivity and customer service that cannot be easily replaced. When those employees leave, the cost goes far beyond the time it takes to hire someone new. There is lost efficiency, training time, potential mistakes on jobsites and often a temporary slowdown in production.
In contrast, companies that focus on retention build stability. Crews work more efficiently together, communication improves and customers benefit from experienced teams that know how to deliver quality work. Over time, that consistency becomes a competitive advantage.
Retention begins with leadership. Employees who feel respected, valued and supported are far more likely to stay with a company. That means maintaining open communication, recognizing good work and creating an environment where employees feel they are part of the company’s success. Something as simple as acknowledging a crew that completed a challenging job on schedule can go a long way toward building loyalty.
Compensation and benefits are also important, but retention often comes down to opportunity. Employees want to see a path forward. Training programs, leadership opportunities and clear expectations for advancement show team members that they are not just filling a position. They are building a career.
Investing in training can be especially powerful. Teaching installers new techniques, safety practices or equipment skills not only improves job performance but also demonstrates a commitment to employee development. Workers who feel they are growing professionally are far more likely to stay.
Company culture plays a major role as well. Businesses that promote teamwork, safety and pride in craftsmanship tend to attract employees who share those values. Over time, that culture becomes self-reinforcing as experienced employees help train and mentor the next generation of installers.
Recruiting will always be necessary in a growing business. But the strongest companies recognize that the best recruiting strategy often begins with retention. When employees enjoy where they work, feel respected and see opportunities for growth, they become ambassadors for the company. Word spreads and suddenly recruiting becomes easier because people want to be part of the team.
